Coffee Shops in the West Village | Eater NY

"Steer away from the too-weak drip toward the espresso beverages at this comfy spot on West 4th. It offers pastries and sandwiches with a Sicilian bent, including a plain mortadella sandwich and a roll with a hot dog inside. The chocolate croissant is just a plain croissant with chocolate sprinkled on the outside and a small vein of chocolate inside." - Robert Sietsema

The Coppola Cafe is a delightful escape from the city’s chaos. With its vintage decor, soft jazz music, and cozy seating, it feels like stepping into a European café. The cappuccino was creamy and rich, and the pistachio croissant was flaky and indulgent. The staff are warm and attentive, making you feel like a regular even on your first visit. It’s an ideal spot for slow mornings, casual catch-ups, or simply enjoying a good book with a better coffee. Everything from the ambiance to the service feels thoughtfully curated. Truly a hidden gem worth returning to.

Google
Great neighborhood cafe vibe. This has quickly evolved into my favorite cafe in NYC. They do a really great job of foaming their espresso drinks, and I really like the croissant selection. I feel like I teleported to Europe when I'm here! Super underrated spot in NYC.

Google
What a lovely place! The ambiance is amazing! Indoor and outdoor seating area is great! Service is amazingly friendly and nice! And the food is delicious! Cakes and coffees are all worth tasting here! Definitely recommend this place to everyone!

Google
I loved this place. The flatbread was really good and the staff were so nice. The man behind the counter forgot my coffee and apologized, it wasn't a big deal but I appreciated how quick he got my coffee to me. Space is a little small and it can get kind of crowded and loud, honestly it didn't bother me personally but I know for some people it might be a lot.

Google
I liked this place! The iced coffee was good!

Google
One of my favorite cafes / coffee shops in the neighborhood. My wifi went out when working from home one day so I popped in here to finish the day. The staff was so friendly and the cold brew was delicious. I love the vibe inside and there’s plenty of places to sit. I later came to find out that they have the best paninis. My go to is the Mario. Highly recommend this spot!

Google
Lovely place for a short coffee stop with your friends or family. Quick service, caring staff, large choice of pastries. Tea and hot chocolate (vegan option) available too. Support this small, woman-owned business, it really deserves it!

Jeff Hannon

Google
Best cafe in our neighborhood. The owners and staff are super friendly and best place to grab authentic Sicilian pastries or an espresso or cappuccino. And their outside patio tables are prime people watching spot right in W 4th and they also have ample seating inside for getting work done or for reading a book. So much better than Starbucks and it’s always nice to support local.

Yelp
I've come to think of the Coppola Cafe as "my place". Right across the street, always cozy, often some beautiful Italian to be heard spoken by the family that runs the place, as well as some Italian popular music to which I've been delighted to be introduced. Out the front windows, I see tree-lined Jones Street and my apartment building, and people always strolling by. There's a regular group of folks that can often be found at the lone communal table, chatting happily away. The remodeling they did a while back eliminated some of the window-seating, and I'm still a bit sad about that, but it hasn't really hurt my ability to find a seat most of the time. I love coming here, either to get a bit of work done or just to chill and enjoy the atmosphere. This is such a special little gem, and my favorite coffee shop over all others in the Village.

Yelp
had a pretty filling turkey and cheese croissant from this cafe! had no idea there was an egg inside, which was a fun surprise. at $9.50, it did seem to be a bit pricey and I'm not sure how fresh they are. the water was offered to me by the owners, which was nice of them! the cafe is pretty small, but they do have wifi and outdoor seating.
google avatar

Yelp
No outlets but there is wifi. Outdoor seating is nice. Matcha was not good. $8 for an iced almond milk matcha, and it barely looked green and I could not taste any matcha flavor- just almond milk. I would definitely avoid the matcha, but some of the pastries looked good.

Yelp
I just received a moldy sandwich. There was also a pink splotch which I noticed too late. Hope I don't get sick :(

Yelp
The establishment pleased us with its cozy atmosphere, pleasant service and delicious pastries. Unfortunately, the experience was spoiled by the not very tasty coffee. Maybe it's worth working on the quality of the drink.

Yelp
Cute vibes, coffee is decent. There are people working on laptops, reading, or casually chatting with friends. Came here with a friend and ordered: Barista: 5/5 Friendly staff Hazelnut Latte with oat milk. 3.5/5 Coffee was decent but it tasted nothing like hazelnut. Just a latte with oat milk. Iced hazelnut cold brew with oat milk. 5/5

Yelp
I used to work a couple stores down and I came in here every morning for a americano and specifically their pistachio or almond croissant. I came to leave a review because as that was over 2 years ago I can't find anything just as good and am craving one badly. I'm definitely going to stop in and hopefully they'll still be there. As long as they have them I'll be a customer! Not to mention the couple that runs the cafe are the kindest people

Yelp
Visited this spot last weekend because I like supporting small businesses, but was not pleased by the unprofessional, misbehaved, and blatantly rude staff. I checked Google reviews and was appalled to find the owner mocks patrons in person and online! Anyhow, here's the tea yal... It was one of those hot NYC summer days so of course I was tired when I walked in. I took a long time to decide what to order and when I finally did, the person behind the counter responded to my request rudely. I then asked if they had a bathroom and the man literally scoffs like he had never heard of someone who asked that question. He said the bathroom wasn't allowed for customers like me, which also came off as racist? I understand if you have a bathroom policy, but there's no need to be nasty when you tell the customer. I got my pastry and quickly left to get a real lunch at a nearby establishment (Down the Hatch)--highly recommend over this spot! I work remote and have visited cafes all over Manhattan, but never have I come across a cafe staff so rude. I don't recommend coming to this cafe due to the attitude of the owner and their employees. There's at least 5 other better cafes within a 10 minute walk :)

Yelp
Came in for a place to get some work done - they've got a few tables outside, but Wi-Fi connection isn't strong out there. A few high tops inside - but did not find any outlets. Got an iced chai latte - that was pretty good. Maybe not the best long term working spot!

Yelp
5 stars service Italian coffee The croissant is fresh and crunchy and especially I like the egg within. Super yummy. Most important is I love their service.

Yelp
love this place!! the matcha was so good and croissant was also good! the ambience is nice and a great place for studying, working, or chatting with friends! i recommend this cafe alot! the service was great, and the staff were nice.

Yelp
Cute cafe, but I hated my latte unfortunately. As soon as I took my first sip, I regretted it. It was a tiny portion (maybe 3-4 ounces), and it tasted flat and bitter. I know this is the Italian style, but it tasted sterile and average. I was surprised, because they have a fancy espresso machine, but it was like something I could've made myself with cheap illy beans.

Yelp
I wholeheartedly love this little cafe. Sometimes, a cafe in NYC can have it all - a restroom for customers, strong wifi, and ample seating. The interior and exterior is dotted with little tables to accommodate a decent number of customers. The staff is so incredibly friendly and attentive. Usually in cafes, the most staff interaction begins and ends at the counter. Here, they warmly tell you to sit, they check if you need refills, and they're happy to let you stay as long as you need. Their iced espresso was nutty and strong. And their croissant was absolutely delicious - dusted with powdered sugar, flaky and crispy from top to bottom, and with a layer of custard on the inside. I inhaled mine immediately. My only issue was the number of flies inside the cafe. They buzzed around over the tables and were overall bothersome while I was trying to sit peacefully inside. Although with all things considered, maybe the staff was merely trying to accommodate these pesky little guests as well.

Yelp
Got the Parma ham panini and it was pretty good, as were the lattes they served. Place is also quiet with stable wifi so it's a good place to get some work done.

Yelp
I love this place. It is like how most cafés in NYC used to be before all of Manhattan became a swamp of illiterate tech-finance-startup drones. You won't deal with QR codes or other such bullshit here. They serve good panini, good coffee, and they treat customers like adults. Edit: I just read a couple negative reviews from earlier this year and now I like the Coppola staff even more. Entitled idiots should always be treated as such.

Yelp
Best coffee in the whole west village!!! They have the best coffee machine, so the coffee taste so good it's not bitter! I always get an iced latte, it's hard for a latte to taste so good when you need a non dairy milk. Here I have it with oat, and It's so good I don't even need to add sugar!!! Real Italian coffee!!!

Yelp
So happy to stumble upon this adorable coffee shop this morning! We walked around in the area to grab some iced coffee - glad we went here instead of across the street and were able to support a woman owned business!!

Yelp
This place is the best!! An absolute GEM-- small, adorable, free wifi, a bathroom, great coffee + eats, and the guys behind the counter are the friendliest people ever! I come here almost daily to catch up on work. the coffee is always great in the morning & the breakfast croissant is delicious! despite its size, there are plenty of places to sit but beware if you need to charge something-- the only plugs are near the window table by the gelato, or around the corner across from the register but can be reached from the long table with stools set up at the far wall. they also have a 20% discount for nyu students. what i love about this cafe is that it's the kind of place where people come to really enjoy coffee and company! you'll almost always see tables of older italians talking animatedly over espresso-- a wonderful change of pace from places like Think coffee where everyone is silently plugged into their own devices. Also, people regularly stop by with their pups for a treat! I can't say enough great things about Nico, the barista!!! He alone can turn your day around! But the coffee is great too, and he has amazing recommendations. If you enjoy chai lattes or golden lattes, try what i'm calling the "nico latte". It's a dirty chai with turmeric, a recommendation from nico which was such a perfect combination of my two favorite drinks. must show proof of vaccination to dine in!

Yelp
Super cute cafe with seating outside! I tried the Flat white, hot coffee and biscotti, which were all great. Spent a pleasant hour here people-watching. Would definitely return to try one of the paninis.

Yelp
Great spot to hang out or do work. Sunny outdoor seating, many tables inside, and large windows with bar seating. The coffee is fantastic. They also have sandwiches, pastries, and soup. There is wifi (that is strong!) so you are able to do laptop work here. Situated on a quaint, mellow street in West Village, has a neighborhood feel. They serve their iced coffee is mason jars- major win. The barista was super friendly. Highly recommend.

Kara V.

Yelp
Great ambiance and great coffee in the west village. They have a lot of seating to come sit, sip coffee, read a book, and relax. Quick service.

Yelp
Coppola is my staple.. I even went as far as to throw away my sh!tty watered down Starbucks the other day to realize Coppola is my true love. They are so welcoming and kind (even in the bushy mornings when I have to jet to work) Live jazz every Friday at 6pm. The owner is always around ensuring his customers are happy. I can tell because he's there often - And I really like that. Great energy.
google avatar

Yelp
This dog friendly cafe was a convenient spot to grab a weekend morning coffee with the added bonus of running into some good doggos. That aside, the actual drip coffee was on the dark and bitter side, and the mocha was milk and chocolate forward with not a whole lot of espresso detected. The staff were friendly, the ambiance was cute, and our drinks were served up expeditiously.

Yelp
I hate writing negative reviews, but Coppola Cafe really disappointed. When we walked in, we had high hopes. The atmosphere was very charming, and I felt like I was in a small Italian cafe. Unfortunately, that is the only positive thing I can say about this place. We were hoping for a quick breakfast and coffee, but it could not have taken longer. Despite there being less than a dozen people in the cafe, our two basic breakfast sandwiches took 40 minutes on the dot to come out. I'm sympathetic to restaurants being understaffed, but we didn't receive an apology or anything for having to wait nearly an hour for a simple egg and cheese breakfast sandwich. The food itself was decent and the only reason I'm giving the cafe 2 stars, but was it worth spending triple what I could have spent at a bodega which would've had the food ready in 5 minutes? No freaking way. If I'm waiting 40 minutes for a breakfast sandwich, it better be epic, and Cafe Coppola's breakfast sandwich is not. To end the mediocre meal, the manager rudely accused of not paying the bill on our way out in front of everyone in the cafe. I don't blame the guy for forgetting about us paying considering we paid about an hour earlier. Still, it really was the cherry on top of such a disappointing meal.

Kate J.

Yelp
Been a barista for years and this place exceeds all expectations. Gorgeous coffee, beautiful decor, excellent service. Will be my weekend fav
google avatar

Yelp
This place rules. Their black coffee is solid, and according to some friends, their lattes, etc are good too. Tables filled up quick on a brisk rainy day. And what will keep me coming back is the knowledgeable engaging staff. Very welcoming and I enjoyed my chat while he deftly prepared our drinks.
google avatar

Eunice C.

Yelp
Nice strong drip coffee with buttery croissant. Came here Saturday early afternoon and thought it was going to be packed but found the perfect table for my meetup. The doors were open for airflow during this fall weather season.
google avatar

Melissa B.

Yelp
Delicious! Had a cappuccino, iced oat milk latte, chocolate croissant and an apricot croissant (particularly delicious). Enjoyed it at a table outside on a nice morning. Coming from someone who has lived in Italy, this place is 10/10 delicious and tastes like it does in the old country! Friendly & fast service. We'll be back.
google avatar

Julie T.

Yelp
near nyu and serves as a pretty good study cafe if you're not working on anything too intensive. a bit off background noise and the seats/tables are quite nice. i got a cream filled donut and a latte and thought they were both pretty good. what stood out to me though was how nice the service was! the barista was very sweet and the way she interacted with customers was giving homey, wholesome local cafe vibes. i look forward to coming back sometime!
google avatar

Yelp
This place is somewhere you go where you want a little piece of Italy. The espresso is amazing the croissants are magnificent and the staff is just overall pleasurable. I stopped by to do some work and I ended up staying all day because everyone was just so lovely, 10 out of 10 would definitely go back and recommend
google avatar

Nivi R.

Yelp
It's a cute little addition to the area. I have only ever tried the coffee, which is great, but would love to come back someday and try their fab looking croissants. Also the staff (owners I am guessing), are so pleasant and nice.
google avatar

Shridhar G.

Yelp
Extremely rude and condescending people. Wanted to get some work done, I entered and asked if I could use the restroom before sitting down. Was flatly told "no, it's only for customers". Ok fine, so when I offered to pay for something before sitting was told "we don't sell items to use the restroom". Seriously a rude and weird experience. Go across the street to Amano, they are much nicer there, or Joe's 2 blocks away which kindly let me use their restroom BEFORE ordering and sitting down.

Devesh K.

Yelp
Racist and discriminatory service. Asked the male barista for coffee in a cup to sit down on one of the empty tables. Barista said they don't serve cups on weekends while half of the cafe was drinking from cups and there were empty cups available to serve in. Unsurprisingly, all the people sitting were white while as a brown guy I got indirectly asked to Ieave after paying for the coffee. Too many cafes in the neighbourhood to bother with this 19th century shit.
google avatar

Steve G.

Yelp
Just opened. Friendly, fun, hip place w Sicilian artisanal items and gelato. Great addition to an already awesome neighborhood! Owners really are Italian and according to the barista 'really friendly people';) Will come back and check out the gelato. Assume that if the pistachios are from Sicily it'd be especially delicious. Also, finally a place that serves Chinotto!
google avatar

Ariel S.

Yelp
Honestly first impression was ok not great since I wasn't allowed to use the bathroom as I wasn't a sit-down customer. I didn't have time to sit down because I was on the way to a doctors appointment but craved something sweet. The cream donut was delicious but after being denied about using the bathroom my hopes of coming back and enjoying it with my family isn't worth it. I'd rather go to a place that values all types of customers especially being that it was my first time there. :(

Benny H.

Yelp
Best sandwiches ever. Honestly, walk a mile in the rain good. And great coffee. Best lil cafe in the village. Gabriel the owner is super chill.

Laura D.

Yelp
Has wifi and the ambience is nice. However the manager/owner is extremely rude. We were also told that we'd only be able to stay for 45 min if we had laptops and if we wanted to stay longer we'd have to order again. The other staff were very friendly but I would not come back.
google avatar

Ann T.

Yelp
Horrible management, got thrown out after we asked to take our latte togo after using their restroom. And failed to check vaccination cards for indoor dining.

Yelp
Got lost in the neighborhood on the morning Christmas Eve and found this cafe open around 930A. It was super cute, cozy and weather was ok to sit outside and enjoy the blue skies. While I sat outside with my delicious iced americano, I noticed locals that came to sit outside also...you can tell they've been going to this cafe for years as they all knew eachother and the staff seemed to know their order. There was nothing pretentious and all kind of customers came by. I then met Ahmed, who came around to straighten the chairs outside and clean up any garbage that blew by. He started to chat, and I enjoyed chatting with him about everything...total New Yorker who was born & raised there and was so kind. I was quickly treated like family and saw the food come out to other patrons. I gave in and ordered a prosciutto and cheese croissant. Ahmed made it with such love and it was delicious! I can't wait to come back to the Coppola Cafe as I can can't out all day here! Nice to meet you Ahmed & Gabriel.

Yelp
Absolutely fantastic spot in the Village run by Sicilian expat Gabriel. This cute little cafe tucked on the corner of Jones and West 4th has only been around for a year or two, but is a prime oasis in an otherwise busy street dominated by pubs and bars. With Gabriel in charge, you know the coffee is going to be excellent! While the standard cappuccinos, macchiatos, and caffés are the highlights of Coppola, don't shy away from grabbing a bite here either. Got the porchetta panini which was delightful -- fantastic bread, yummy porchetta, and razor-thin slices of lemon that combined for fantastic bites that just got better and better until there was no more!

Ashlyn H.

Yelp
Had a mental breakdown and cried over the phone whilst drinking a double macchiato here. The guy working helped me find a wall plug to charge my phone as well - super cool and nice staff. Really good atmosphere for a cry and a coffee

Yelp
My daughter moved into NYU campus so I had to stop by the cafe before we flew back to California, let me share my excitement, my marocchino was the highlight of my trip. An Italian staple that tasted like it was made in Sicily found in NY. Oh yeah, the employees were very, very kind and professional! A+++++ 10/10

Yelp
I dont in NYC much...and I was in need of a good coffee and bite to eat..WOW didnt ever believe a smiling face and great service was to be found, until I walked in your door...I grabbed a hot coffee and Germano sandwich..finished with a lovely gelato!! Thank you again Rezi for your suggestions and lovely smile!! will be back often!!

Yelp
It was as though the biscotti were straight from my Nonna's kitchen in Italy! This adorable cafe is the PERFECT date spot- grab (an actual authentic) gelato! Or real hot chocolate and homemade biscotti, mmm. Great place to have a quaint lunch in the village, or grab something on the go- you know they're definitely putting a lot of good ole' Italian love and attention into making their panini's and pizza. I highly recommend this for visitors too - you'll feel like a local taking in this neighborhood gem.

Yelp
A little cafe right off 6th ave. You'd miss it if you weren't looking. I've been here twice and had a great experience. The place is not big but also it's enough to find a seat if you want. Their croissants are really good, I recommend pistachio. It's rare to find a pistachio croissant. The barista is first class and makes a good strong coffee and latte. They also have the rare Marrocachino which is now my favorite drink it's like a Mocha late but with cappuccino foam texture and more chocolates like a got chocolate! The prices are fair for manhattan especially the village and you get a good size cup as you can see from the photos. The only suggestions I have are to maybe put a chalk board outside the shop to advertise more and stick out and also to upgrade the smaller things like the napkins, decorations, make it so you can't miss it, like I almost did !
