I came here for brunch after a long and hot hike at Torrey Pines with friends. We were sat inside, as soon as you walk in-- we sat in the far left back corner since that was available for 3 seats (6 person table). There was not as much air flow in this corner, compared to the other side that was soo cool (near the bathrooms!) The interior and exterior design of The Cottage Del Mar was very clean, chic, and bright. The only notable things that were strange were the cushions for the booths-- they shift around really easily. And the tables, which looked kind of cheap with a faux stone decal on top of a wooden table. The tables were distanced far from the booth.
The waitress/waiter were both kind. We had the dark haired lady, I think her name is Olivia, but I'm not 100% since it was hard to hear. She brought over a container of water for us since it was quite hot. And double checked that she heard correctly after ordering to ensure we got the correct meal. As it was busy, she did forget to bring some sharing plates. So after we got our food, we asked another waitress (the blond one with maybe cherry earrings). She had a uninterested and unhappy look on her face which made me feel bad for asking haha. In the end if you smile at her ~ she will smile back. So maybe she's not used to that aspect of the job yet.
I ordered the ($19) Stuffed French Toast: brioche, strawberry compote, and mascarpone-- it said it was a "Guest Favorite." To be honest I'm not sure why it is a guest favorite. When I tasted it-- automatically it tasted like salted butter and caramelized onions. And when I opened up the stuffed French toast... it was hardly even stuffed. The strawberry compote did not look as though it was cooked slowly together with a bit of sugar. It looked like it was macerated. The mascarpone was a melted oily puddle in the middle of the folded brioche which didn't add much to the flavor of the stuffed French toast. Overall, it sounded like it would be good but it failed on the execution. The portion size for this was massive, you can share between 3-6 people in my opinion. It is served with softened butter on the side and not warmed maple syrup. I definitely would not order this again. While eating this I was reminded of the stuffed French toast I had at the Fig Tree Cafe-- years ago... it was more tasty.
My friend ordered the ($18.75) MORNING GLORY SANDWICH: fried egg, bacon, smoked gouda, heirloom tomato, arugula, thinly sliced red onion, lemon aioli on sourdough. We got it with their cottage potatoes. This too was noted as "Guest Favorite." She enjoyed it because of the arugula which is her favorite. She noted that the bread slice was kind of thin so the part by the egg got soggy fast. I had a piece and thought it was good, but not fulfilling because the bacon was thin and there was no deli meat. But it was a fresh and vibrant change of taste.
My other friend ordered another Guest Favorite off the menu and this time it was the (~$21) MILANESE CHICKEN SANDWICH-- a crispy fried chicken cutlet, bacon, lettuce, tomato, onion, lemon chipotle aioli, on bolillo bread. She got this with an order of French fries. The waitress from before (dark hair) gave us some house made hot sauce! My friend mixed the hot sauce and ketchup and said it was really tasty together with the fries. I had a portion of the sandwich and it was pretty tasty! The crunch and the coating on the exterior of the chicken was flavorful. The heirloom tomato was delicious since it wasn't super seedy. The lemon aioli was soo good I wish they put it on both sides of the bun! Next time I'd ask for extra on the side, I think the French fries would taste amazing with it. I would order this again!
Overall, they enjoyed eating here at The Cottage and would come again! 3-4 stars. The menu for breakfast and lunch is very big so we will be getting something different to try next time. The coffee menu was long and they seemed to have great latte options that I'll surely try another day. The prices are on par for what you'd expect in Del Mar Plaza and near the beach. Come by and see if you enjoy your morning/afternoon here!
