The Best Restaurants to Try in Del Mar, California | Eater San Diego

"Anchoring the Del Mar Plaza, Cottage Del Mar is a brightly lit restaurant with Victorian decor that overlooks Highway 101, making it an ideal spot for people-watching over breakfast or lunch. Over 30 years ago, the Cottage got its start in La Jolla and it added its third location in Del Mar. On the menu is the popular house granola, a vegan, gluten-free mix that is shipped all over the country. Coffees are roasted at the Encinitas store and shipped directly to the Del Mar restaurant. Stuffed French toast, chilaquiles, and morning glory sandwiches, made with fried eggs, bacon, and smoked Gouda on sourdough, are also popular items. Don’t skip the cold-pressed juices, such as tangerine or watermelon." - Helen I. Hwang

Absolutely delicious brunch! Came for the wife's birthday, and they did not disappoint, with each item being great. As an addition, they are dog friendly, which helped as we had our fur baby joining us and our kids to celebrate. I highly recommend checking outthis place. Minimal wait when arriving aground 10:45 on a Saturday.

We visited The Cottage in Del Mar for brunch, and it was an exceptional experience. The food was fresh, flavorful, and beautifully presented, truly hitting the mark for a perfect brunch spot. The staff were friendly and attentive, making us feel welcome and well taken care of throughout our meal. The ambiance added a cozy, relaxed vibe that complemented the delicious food. If you're in Del Mar, I highly recommend stopping by The Cottage it’s definitely worth a visit!

Google
Chef Kyle was so kind and his food is incredible. Fresh scones are baked throughout the whole day, and come with many of the delicious breakfast plates . The complimentary HOMEMADE fruit seasonal jam on the side is incredible !! Get the Spanish omelette ! Best omelette in town ! You can always expect to be served by a really friendly staff~ they always make you feel super welcome ! This has been my go to brunch spot all year… Thank you!

Google
Come enjoy the weekend morning, the del mar location is decorated similar to la jolla with outdoor seating and more indoors. Must get coffee

Google
The food here wasn’t too bad, but the service really took away from the experience. Our waitress seemed rushed from the start—quick to take the order, quick to bring the bill, and overall not very welcoming. It didn’t feel like the kind of place where you could relax and enjoy your meal. For the price point, there are plenty of other breakfast spots that offer better service and a more pleasant atmosphere. The only positive experience was the bubbly here.

Google
Food was delicious and seasoned perfectly. Service was great. We were seated quickly. Parking in the garage was not the best however as it charges by the hour and there is no validation. Seems at least the first two hours should be free to support the shops and businesses in the Plaza.

Google
The food at La Cottage is great, but the service is disappointing. I asked for coffee at 1:45 PM, and they refused, even though they close at 3pm. Our server, was more focused on everything except her tables—on 2 different separate visits—another server had to step in. The other server wasn’t friendly but at least did her job. Great food can’t make up for such poor service.

Google
This is a cheerful spot for breakfast. The food is artfully crafted and the service is kind. The brioche French toast was perfectly cooked with buttery crisp edges and a light custard middle, add mixed berries on top!

Yelp
What a beautiful, bigger than it looks, small restaurant that we just happened upon on our way down to San Diego thanks to YELP! We wanted to find a scenic place, close to the beach with good food and we TOTALLY found that! There's paid parking, free for the first hour then three dollars every thirty mins. The restaurant does not validate but it's a not a big deal. We were seated right away by a lovely woman who was smiling and couldn't have been more friendly! We sat outside and checked out the small menu, The food came out quickly but was just delicious! I highly recommend this place, I'm so happy I found it! The neighborhood was quaint and walkable. There's a constant stream of people walking by and a ton of bikes and not too many cars! This place is a not so hidden gem, please try it!!

Yelp
We eat here often. It seems kind of "tourist driven" (which is good) and the people who work here are wonderful. The food is clean and simple. We often get the Pork Belly Benedict. We also have had their salads and are tried their signature French Toast today (it is amazing). The people who work here are warm and friendly. Service is always excellent! Definitely worth the work to find a parking spot!

Yelp
This was my first time trying this restaurant and I was pleasantly surprised. From the moment I walked up to the restaurant, I was greeted immediately and seated right away with no reservation on a Saturday morning. The staff were SO sweet and accommodating. The restaurant itself is very cute, but small with both indoor and outdoor seating. The food was very yummy! Parking is available in the lot, they do not validate just FYI. Food review: Morning glory sandwich: (5/5) This was sooo yummy! The flavors blended well together. The bread was toasted perfectly and it was super filling! I'd definitely order again. Brisket hash: (4/5) Super tasty, meat was tender and flavorful. It was a great portion as well. The scone and jam were soooo delicious!

Yelp
Thankfully, this location is much cleaner than the other one I've been to. Although they do leave the butter and jam out for who knows how long and there was dust or some kind of fuzzy in mine, which wasn't very appetizing. I wasn't very hungry, so all I got was the Ruby Roots juice, which I thought was pretty tasty and they give you a decent amount, and Blueberry Millet muffin, they did not skimp on the blueberries and they millet wasn't drying. Overall, I was extremely happy with the simple things I got. I did get to try some of my coworkers meals as well, which is what brought my rating of this place down. Their Lemon Ricotta Pancakes did not have a strong lemon flavor to them and were on the sweeter side. The Joe's Special gave a decent amount of food for the price. Overall, the flavor was okay. Good but nothing special.

Yelp
I was shocked how quickly we were able to get a table on a Sunday morning at 11am. They had cute outdoor seating and overall fast and good service. I got the Morning Glory sandwich which was good but nothing amazing. I would try something else next time. They do have a parking garage right there which I believe is $3/30 minutes

Yelp
Great service even on Mother's Day. Had a wonderful breakfast, their french toast is amazing. A whole order would feed 3 people so a half it was. Served with maple syrup and butter. The omelet was good too. Filled with cheese and veggies. I like that it comes with a scone too and I think homemade jam. Taste like homemade ketchup too. Love the La Jolla one and now it's awesome t have here in Del Mar.

Yelp
The food is good here at the cottage Del mar. It's only been here for six months. I think it opened in October 2024. The service is amazing. The ambience is so bright and beautiful. The walls in the back are painted a bright yellow.

Yelp
We were in the area and decided to check it out. They had a wait, but was able to get a table b4 given estimate. The staff were kind and helpful with ordering suggestions. I had the chilaquiles, and was extremely disappointed by them. I've never had chilaquiles that had zero flavor or spice before! I asked for hot sauce thinking it could help... but they make it "homemade" which also lacked flavor and kick as well. My friend order looked really good and their scone was pretty tasty. We did find it really odd that they allowed someone with 2 German Shepards sit in the little patio area, which then blocked people/staff from being able to walk by. I get in California " everyone" loves to bring their pets but if you have 2 huge dogs that take up a lot of space....maybe sometimes it's ok to leave them at home. Overall, I may come back again, but definitely will avoid the chilaquiles.

Yelp
Enjoyed my breakfast the scones are delicious and the staff were a vibe and friendly. Can't remember my drinks name but it was delicious.

Yelp
I visited on a Thursday afternoon when it wasn't too crowded. There's both indoor and outdoor seating available. I was greeted right away after sitting down. I ordered the Jumpstart coffee -- it was delicious, though a bit on the sweeter side. For lunch, I had the shrimp and crab salad, which was phenomenal -- the artichokes were a great touch. My friend had the salmon pasta, which was also excellent. Overall, it's a quiet and relaxing place to enjoy a delicious breakfast. The servers were incredibly friendly and attentive.

Yelp
Great location, solid menu. Staff is very welcoming and accomodating. The bar menu is creative, it's not actual spirits, but they do well with the soju based cocktails. The food is good, prices are a bit spendy but it's to be expected at a venue like this, almost seaside. Seating is a bit tight but it works.

Yelp
Sat at the counter the other day, ordered the oatmeal. It came out barely warm. I sent it back, they made me another one, same story. I didn't eat it. After my lady finished her breakfast, I paid the bill. No one on their staff said a word to me or asked if I wanted something else. Doubt I'll be back

Yelp
I loved this place. Amazing location right by the coast in the Del Mar village. Parking was easy and cheap in the structure behind the building. All the employees were incredibly friendly. The atmosphere in this place is great. Food was awesome. They took great care of our dog with a chicken and rice bowl. Can't wait to go back.

Yelp
Found this place for lunch on Yelp/ good ratings and close to where we were. Trendy, chic, clean with great selections. We each got something different and they were all eye appealing as well as tummy satisfying. After our meal we walked a few steps more and came across a dessert shop. Beware the parking structure is a bit confusing if you walk down the stairs but later decide to catch an elevator up. Hubs walked up the way we came down. Doc and I walked towards the middle of the ground level for an elevator. We pressed the button for the floor we parked at. Checked a few floors. Nope. Doc told me to wait. Hubs texted where are you folks. No cell reception , I didn't receive his text. I texted him we are lost but it couldn't send- no WiFi.., twilight zone! I needed a lúa pronto. Oh my!!! Finally my two companions drove towards me to my rescue... Thank heavens

Yelp
Came here for brunch and had such a lovely experience. We ordered the Joe's Special, braised beef hash, and the Antojito Benedict. Everything was fresh and flavorful--the eggs in the special were perfectly cooked, and I appreciated that all the dishes were less salty than your typical brunch spot, which really let the quality of the ingredients shine. The scones that came with the meals were amazing, and the coffee was solid, but the espresso drinks were especially standout. Service was warm and kind--they even gave us a free cinnamon roll because they had warmed up an extra by mistake. Such a thoughtful touch! We arrived right at 8am when it was still a bit chilly, and they let our dogs sit inside with us--huge bonus points for that. On a clear day, you can even catch a bit of the ocean from your table. Prices felt very fair for the quality and experience. Definitely a great breakfast/brunch spot in Del Mar--can't wait to come back!

Yelp
The food here is always great, I always love avocado toast, and they had a Mediterranean flare to the one that they make and it was absolutely yummy I would give the coffee, a four out of five, I think that they need to make lattes a little warmer The service was good and there's a parking garage

Yelp
Loved this new location!! Got the morning glory sandwich and it was absolutely delicious! Perfectly toasted bread. Egg was made to perfection. Flavors tied in nicely. Served with bite-size potatoes. Server was so sweet! She made sure we were always doing okay and made conversations with us that made us smile. She said the fries here are her favorite (and I agree, crispy outside, chewy inside, nicely seasoned) !! Place was stunning! Gorgeous interior that had outside and inside seating. I love the aesthetic. Highly recommend this perfect brunch spot in Del Mar!

Yelp
Horrible. Been dining in DelMar for over 15 years. This restaurant was the wirst. I ordered a 23 shrimp bowl. It had 5 dry small shrimp with minimal rice and veggies. A small piece of avocado. Service was bad. Asked the busboy to reclean the table and he used a filthy rag and than proceeded to tell his coworkers what we did and stated my son down. Miserable experience. I usually only write good reviews but don't see this restaurant lasting very long. The food was so bad I still have a stomach ache. Waste of money feel cheated.

Yelp
We always drive by this cute breakfast spot and it's always packed. Today we were in the area and finally got a chance to try it. It's a cute spot across the street from the water. It was a beautiful and such a peaceful tranquil spot to dine at. We started with a Match Latte and a Mexican Mocha. Both were delicious. We decided to share the Braised Beef Hash and the Lemon Ricotta Pancakes and we loved everything! Will definitely be coming back to try the other items on the menu and friendly staff made us feel welcome!

Yelp
Food was so good I was surprised that I had such a good experience. If you want to impress someone take them here. Service so so friendly and I learned a lot about what is good . Ambience is beyond elegant. Wow I loved it.
google avatar

Yelp
I personally like this location better than the original La Jolla location. Great food and ambience.

Yelp
The Cottage gives off charming, small town vibes with the literal white picket fence and cutesy decorations. The staff was knowledgeable about allergens and although not listen on the menu there was gluten free bread available to substitute for many dishes along with a variety of other vegetarian and GF options. The chilaquiles has a surprisingly nice spice kick and the pork belly eggs Benedict were hearty. The pastries in the case looked spectacular. Overall we really enjoyed this new addition to the Del Mar Plaza and can't wait to brunch again soon!

Hungry M.

Yelp
So, $6.26 for a cup of black coffee to go. No cream. Not a cappuccino, flat white or latte. Black coffee. Come on. Won't happen again.
google avatar

Denise K.

Yelp
Great way to start the day with breakfast at The Cottage! Our server was super attentive and funny. Hubby had the french toast which were generous and yummy...I had a scramble and it was delish and more than I could eat...and a sour cream scone that i absolutely did finish!! Definitely recommend!

Yelp
I came here for brunch after a long and hot hike at Torrey Pines with friends. We were sat inside, as soon as you walk in-- we sat in the far left back corner since that was available for 3 seats (6 person table). There was not as much air flow in this corner, compared to the other side that was soo cool (near the bathrooms!) The interior and exterior design of The Cottage Del Mar was very clean, chic, and bright. The only notable things that were strange were the cushions for the booths-- they shift around really easily. And the tables, which looked kind of cheap with a faux stone decal on top of a wooden table. The tables were distanced far from the booth. The waitress/waiter were both kind. We had the dark haired lady, I think her name is Olivia, but I'm not 100% since it was hard to hear. She brought over a container of water for us since it was quite hot. And double checked that she heard correctly after ordering to ensure we got the correct meal. As it was busy, she did forget to bring some sharing plates. So after we got our food, we asked another waitress (the blond one with maybe cherry earrings). She had a uninterested and unhappy look on her face which made me feel bad for asking haha. In the end if you smile at her ~ she will smile back. So maybe she's not used to that aspect of the job yet. I ordered the ($19) Stuffed French Toast: brioche, strawberry compote, and mascarpone-- it said it was a "Guest Favorite." To be honest I'm not sure why it is a guest favorite. When I tasted it-- automatically it tasted like salted butter and caramelized onions. And when I opened up the stuffed French toast... it was hardly even stuffed. The strawberry compote did not look as though it was cooked slowly together with a bit of sugar. It looked like it was macerated. The mascarpone was a melted oily puddle in the middle of the folded brioche which didn't add much to the flavor of the stuffed French toast. Overall, it sounded like it would be good but it failed on the execution. The portion size for this was massive, you can share between 3-6 people in my opinion. It is served with softened butter on the side and not warmed maple syrup. I definitely would not order this again. While eating this I was reminded of the stuffed French toast I had at the Fig Tree Cafe-- years ago... it was more tasty. My friend ordered the ($18.75) MORNING GLORY SANDWICH: fried egg, bacon, smoked gouda, heirloom tomato, arugula, thinly sliced red onion, lemon aioli on sourdough. We got it with their cottage potatoes. This too was noted as "Guest Favorite." She enjoyed it because of the arugula which is her favorite. She noted that the bread slice was kind of thin so the part by the egg got soggy fast. I had a piece and thought it was good, but not fulfilling because the bacon was thin and there was no deli meat. But it was a fresh and vibrant change of taste. My other friend ordered another Guest Favorite off the menu and this time it was the (~$21) MILANESE CHICKEN SANDWICH-- a crispy fried chicken cutlet, bacon, lettuce, tomato, onion, lemon chipotle aioli, on bolillo bread. She got this with an order of French fries. The waitress from before (dark hair) gave us some house made hot sauce! My friend mixed the hot sauce and ketchup and said it was really tasty together with the fries. I had a portion of the sandwich and it was pretty tasty! The crunch and the coating on the exterior of the chicken was flavorful. The heirloom tomato was delicious since it wasn't super seedy. The lemon aioli was soo good I wish they put it on both sides of the bun! Next time I'd ask for extra on the side, I think the French fries would taste amazing with it. I would order this again! Overall, they enjoyed eating here at The Cottage and would come again! 3-4 stars. The menu for breakfast and lunch is very big so we will be getting something different to try next time. The coffee menu was long and they seemed to have great latte options that I'll surely try another day. The prices are on par for what you'd expect in Del Mar Plaza and near the beach. Come by and see if you enjoy your morning/afternoon here!

Sydney M.

Yelp
Honestly not impressed with this restaurant. Wasn't greeted by our server, simply walked up and said "can I get you a drink" with the most uninterested tone. She was short and not super friendly for most of our experience. After asking for medium well done eggs, we had to send our food back because the eggs were super underdone and got dirty looks from multiple staff members. Food was okay, not bad but not great! Will not be returning anytime soon.

Laura Y.

Yelp
Food was delicious! I ordered an alcoholic beverage and when they checked my id & seen that it was my birthday, they brought me dessert that was to die for. Staff were super sweet as well.
google avatar

Becky S.

Yelp
Busy place - especially on a Saturday morning!! It was so loud inside the restaurant my head was spinning & my ears were ringing. We sat outside after being sat inside so we could at least visit. I would recommend the owner installing sound barriers on the inside ceiling. The service was great & the food was good. I had the Eggs Benedict & the eggs were poached perfectly!
google avatar

Alice Y.

Yelp
Wanted to check out the new location for one of San Diego's most popular brunch spots! The design is more updated/slightly more modern than the original La Jolla location, and they have both indoor and outdoor patio seating. We ordered the La Jolla benedict, avocado smash, and a side of lemon ricotta pancakes. Our food tasted similar (maybe slightly lower) quality to that of the La Jolla location. The lemon ricotta pancakes were slightly more spongy and dry, but the rest was good. I will say I felt like the service was a bit lacking with attitude and quality, but maybe they are still training. Overall it's worth checking out, though I would probably still default to the La Jolla location.
google avatar

Brianna L.

Yelp
this place is located on the first floor of the del mar plaza. it has an outdoor area and indoor seating and is dog friendly. the staff is very attentive and helpful. we got a pastrami sandwich and a chicken sandwich. the pastrami sandwich was good with a nice and buttery bread. the fries are really crispy on the outside and soft on the inside. the chicken sandwich was more like a chicken katsu instead of a fried chicken patty. the food is very similar to the cottage location in la jolla. overall a good experience and good food.

Yelp
We visited The Cottage in Del Mar and had an unfortunate experience, mostly relating to customer service. The good: The food was actually really good as well as the amazing view from the top of the plaza. Coffee was tasty. We also had the Joes scramble as well as the stuffed French Toast. If there was no other issue, we would definitely come back again. But... The bad: We had a very bad time with our server, first initial "D". I've worked in customer service for many years and very rarely have had such bad experiences with servers at restaurants. You just need to know the basics of being friendly, attentive, know the menu, etc. From the start "D" seemed annoyed to assist us and took a while to get our order. No smile at all. At first we thought that it was ok, maybe it would improve but it only got worse. As we were leaving my wife mentioned that we had a gift card (we had one of those $25 for $50 gift cards) and the server seemed condescending as when we mentioned it. I don't know why anyone would care if we used one or not. She stated she didn't know how to process the certificate and basically acting like we were inconveniencing her. She kept tapping some employee card on our table, looking ticked off. I suggested maybe getting someone to help with the possible issue and she never answered me or looked at my direction. Finally we were finished and had a talk with the manager. Apparently we weren't the only one with an issue with this server. Many people that day brought up issues about her. As we were leaving ANOTHER customer came up to voice concerns to the manager about the same server. This needs to be addressed as it WILL impact other customers in the future. We might visit the other locations but I'm afraid we will no longer visit the one in Del Mar.

Yelp
wonderful so nice to have a little La Jolla up in North County! Good food Great location!

Yelp
So happy this place opened up today! What a great spot for people/dog/car watching with great food and drinks. We had the lavender champagne- what a delight! We also ate off the lunch menu- club sandwich and tuna melt- both amazing. Very excited to have this spot open and thanks to the team for the hard work!

Yelp
We recently ate here in and everyone in my party got extremely sick - violently vomiting and diarrhea for 5 days straight and sought urgent medical attention. We shared all plates. We filed a health complaint with the City of San Diego. The inspector went out and inspected the restaurant and found a major violation along with minor violations (April 2025). The inspector later called me and said the major violation is directly related to one of the plates we ordered. The violations are listed on the city's website and is public information.

Yelp
Recently picked up lunch catering for an office event and all the food was excellent! Everyone loved it, huge hit! :)

Yelp
My family told me about this cafe and so two of us ventured there during the weekend. The experience was A+. The staff were so friendly, helpful and attentive; the menu offerings numerous; and the ambience very pleasant. We ordered scrambled eggs w/house potatoes, scones, crisp bacon, scrambled egg whites with vegetables, several types of salsa, field salad, Greek yogurt, and coffee (served with WARM milk). Everything was perfect, absolutely delicious -, but the staff made the visit extra-special. What a lovely place!

Antonio R.

Yelp
Came in last weekend for the first time and the food was delicious! Everything that we ordered was good! Did not leave disappointed at all and left is wanting to come back! Great service from the min we checked in to our server. Great ambiance over all. Waitron maybe 20 min and killed sometimes looking at some of the shops near by. Can't wait to be back!

Yelp
Came for Sunday brunch, it was pretty busy. But worth the wait! Food was delicious and service was great!

Yelp
Good food and good service But we like the cottage in La Jolla better. Don't know why, it might be the ambiance, there is a very romantic yard
google avatar

Yelp
Been to the location in LA Jolla many times and love it. Del Mar location food not nearly as good unfortunately.
google avatar

Yianni A.

Yelp
Had a good time at this new location! Great spot but challenging for parking. Breakfast is always good here. I tried the shaken espresso however didn't expect it to look like a shaken espresso martini- if you like strong coffee with a twist this is where to go!!!!! Scones were fantastic! Place is pricey, toast can get you at $3
google avatar

Yelp
We stopped by early last Sunday for breakfast, and it was a fantastic experience from start to finish! One of the first things we noticed (and appreciated) was how incredibly dog-friendly this place is--our pup was welcomed with open arms and even got some water right away. As for the food, it did not disappoint. I went with the Eggs Benedict, and it was absolutely delicious--perfectly poached eggs with just the right amount of hollandaise sauce. To pair with it, I had a Mexican mocha, which was rich, flavorful, and a perfect balance of sweet and spice. The relaxed vibe, friendly staff, and beautiful coastal setting really made the morning special. Whether you're a dog owner or just looking for a great brunch spot, The Cottage in Del Mar is definitely worth a visit.
google avatar

Yelp
The food was mouthwatering & our server was adorable. We had the tuna melt & the crab cake sandwich. We both raved about are food. The ambience does feel like you are in a cottage, it's very well done. This place gets very busy, but it's worth the wait! We can't wait to go back.
google avatar

Yelp
The servers and waitress was amazing. Love that there is options FINALLY for amazing brunch spot in Del Mar with vegetarian delicious options. We put our name down and waited only 15 minutes on a beautiful Sunday morning love for more vegan options though...

Yelp
Beautiful space, everything was bright and open. We sat in 1 of the 2 two-top tables inside with no windows but still very pleasant. The service was welcoming and helpful - server checked on food items regarding my allergies, much appreciated. However, I ran out of coffee and asked twice before it was replenished, not a big deal. I had the cinnamon roll and shrimp & lump crab salad and my friend had the Joe's Special. The roll was very dry, but the salad was refreshing and filling. My friend enjoyed his breakfast. The people working there are friendly. Beautiful bathrooms (always appreciated). Easy street parking. It's gorgeous on a sunny SoCal summer day.

Oliver V.

Yelp
This place just opened and it was delicious! I got the pork belly Benedict and their hollandaise sauce was super good - and add some of their homemade hot sauce to the potatoes and it was delish. My wife got the crab and prosciutto Benedict and really liked it. Service was really good too. They let us pick where we wanted to sit and they were very attentive. Right by the beach, so great location.

Yelp
We've been to the cottage in La Jolla. I believe that these are related to each other, but I'm not 100% sure what I will say is the cottage at Delmar has amazing sandwiches. I got a fried chicken sandwich with salad on the side and everything tasted so fresh and homemade the salad dressing on the side salad was really great and different. My husband got a side of fries with his sandwich and the fries were awesome. Go back and try out their breakfast items.
google avatar

Molly V.

Yelp
We were in the area and wanted to try the cottages for a while! Finally! The wait was 35 mins, but worth it since you can go up stairs and hang out at the bar. Customer service was awesome and food was great! Yes, we will be returning!

Yelp
Been a fan of their La Jolla location for years. When I heard about this new location, so excited as it's close to me. Went there for Sat breakfast. Staff are super nice! I asked a few questions due to my dietary restrictions, and she was very patient with us. Took her recommendations and ended up ordering coffee, shaken espresso, frittata, cinnamon roll and LJ Benedict. There were all outstanding! Even got a bag of their granola to go as it's that good! Jason is awesome as we chatted w him quite a bit. We have to bring our team back for lunch sometime. I always dig a good spot for team lunch! And the open floor plan- can't get any more perfect than that! Will definitely return as regular. Highly recommend! I will next try their lunch menu
