"The Cotton Room in Uptown was once a space for farmers to store and dry their cotton before bringing it downstairs, where vendors set up stalls along the street in a makeshift market. The pubs that line the street now bring a different, boisterous, and pleasure-seeking crowd, which is why the Cotton Room — whose entrance can be easily missed in the chaos — is such a welcome respite; it has a quiet, speakeasy vibe, without requiring a password, reservation or secret handshake. Much of the Cotton Room’s interior is as it was during Charlotte’s textile heyday — the floors, and exposed brick walls are all original — but the diverse crowd it draws is very much modern. The drink menu features tried and true classic cocktails (Bee’s Knees, anyone?), often with modern twists: the Campfire Old Fashioned, a delight for the social media crowd, is a standard Old Fashioned that switches out Angostura for mole bitters and features an Insta-worthy marshmallow set aflame." - Timothy DePeugh, Nikki Miller-Ka

"Tucked into a historic, century-old building that was once an open-air cotton market, the aptly named Cotton Room is a beautiful, speakeasy-style bar with a European vibe and an intimate feel. The wood-paneled, high-ceilinged space oozes history, from the pre-WWII skylight to the original flooring that’s still slightly crooked. The most popular drink here is the house Old Fashioned, made with rye whiskey, orange bitters, and dark brown sugar, then topped with a flamed orange peel." - Lauren Levine

Google
What a great place! My thanks to Thomas for telling me about The Cotton Room. And Brad for sharing his knowledge of Rye whiskey. At one point, I thought I was keeping those young men from closing up and going home. They explained that as the night goes on, the crowd files in. It did. Many young people enjoying craft cocktails. Those bartenders know how to mix. And the bar is well stocked. Great Irish whiskeys. Good rye. Quality mixers and a plethora of bitters! A shake of walnut bitters can enhance a whiskey or rye. And they have the big ice cube so your drink is chilled without getting watered down. Cotton Room is the place. Try it your next night meandering through Uptown Charlotte. It's upstairs from Belfast on Brevard Alley.

Google
Climbing up the stairs and opening the door to find this cozy place made it feel a bit like a speakeasy. The bartenders were friendly and very knowledgeable, and our drinks were impeccably made. The atmosphere while we were there was very relaxed, which was a stark contrast from the boisterous bar down below. With a menu filled with great choices (including several mocktails, which was the reason we chose to come), awesome bartenders, and a chill vibe, this place is worth a visit.

Google
A bartender at a different bar down the street recommended The Cotton Room to me and he was 100% on point because it gave me the industry dive bar feel that I was looking for. The spirit selection was incredible and the space is definitely intimate but perfect. Shanice is an amazing bartender and super hospitable!

Amanda D.

Google
The Cotton Room was a pleasant surprise, especially for a first-time visit! We stumbled upon it while exploring The Alley and decided to check it out. I’m sober, so I didn’t try the Guinness, though I’ve heard it’s highly recommended. Instead, I ordered a mocktail, and it was surprisingly delicious. The venue is a bit small, but it has a cozy, intimate vibe. As a party of three, we were able to find seats without an issue. Overall, it was a great experience, and I’d recommend it for a casual and unique night out!

Google
If you're looking for cozy location to have a nice stiff drink, look no further. Located in the alleyway - second floor - The Cotton Room is nice location is great location to catch-up with a small group of friends or just have drink at the bar. The bartenders are amazing! I made a special request regarding one of my drinks - although out of the norm for them - they had no problem with my request.

Google
Great place for a proper pour of Guinness. Tucked away upstairs to the former Latta Arcade, you will be transformed into a European pub feel. Great selection of spirits. It's very small and I would avoid this place if there is a soccer game. Unless that's your thing, you will probably enjoy the vibe. Cheers!

Justin Lane

Google
Maybe the most underrated cocktail bar in Charlotte. I've never had a bad drink here whether on or off the menu.

Mike Nencetti

Google
Friendly place. Excellent Guinness pours. We went to an after party on a Tuesday night and it was busy.

Pooja V.

Yelp
Service was EXCELLENT. The drinks are amazing. Well made. Great recipes. We loved the "what the craic" and smoked old fashioned. Very intimate spot, used to be a speakeasy I think. Ambiance is perfect for a cocktail bar

Ida M.

Yelp
Stopped by the Cotton Room for a private event. This is a tiny speakeasy that features a broad selection of brand name to boutique whiskeys along with a wide variety of signature cocktails.

Devin O.

Yelp
If you like cozy nook-like bars then this is a great place for you. This bar is located above the Belfast Mill and has a bit of a hidden entrance. The open doorway from the Latta Arcade alley reveals only a dark staircase. There is a fold out sign outside of the entrance with the bar's name but it almost blends in with the other signage in the alley. The bar space is sublime with a stain glass window peak in the ceiling. The staff were great, service was quick. I was a little disappointed because they were out of Guinness and Mountaina Dew (which was for a Wild Turkey and Mountain Dew shooter) but I was able to try some local beers and Red Breast 12 for the first time. Highly recommend visiting this joint on a weekday to avoid crowds.

Erica Y.

Yelp
Right above the Belfast Bar, hard to spot, and has a speakeasy sort of ambience. With darkly lit room, comfortable couches, and a nice small bar. We loved it! It's a nice bar that was quiet enough to chat, and had a sort of small town vibe to. The drinks were great! My husband got a drink that the bartender put some fire trick with it, which was really cool! And the old fashioned was tasty.

Yelp
In Charlotte this week and found a great place in the Uptown neighborhood called the Colton Room. It's a southern inspired speakeasy with cocktails that incorporate local flavors. @thecottonroomclt It's a really comfortable space with exceptional bartenders that know how to make their patrons feel welcome regardless if that's a complex cocktail or shot and a beer. The vibe is warm and fun because the space is intimate. It feels like you're hanging in a friend's funky upstairs loft apartment in the city. The menu is solid with a modern and classics section. It is easy to find something you like, but they're more than willing to make anything off menu. Featured in the pics are Wild Thyme and a Black Manhattan. I'll be featuring Black Manhattan soon. Wild Thyme is a crisp recipe with: 2 oz Vodka muddled raspberries 1 oz lime juice 1/2 oz simple syrup thyme peach bitters If you are in Charlotte go check out the Cotton Room. It is worth the effort!!!

James P.

Yelp
This hole in the wall, prohibition-esque bar has the best mixologists in Charlotte. Never a disappointment with service or flavor. Profiles off the charts. If you're in Charlotte and want a tasty cocktail or neat pour of some delicious bourbon, hit this place up. Will be a regular for years to come.

Melitta S.

Yelp
Speakeasy vibes! I love it! Service was good but busy. Our drinks were phenomenal! I got the Paloma.... They were out of watermelon... wanted the watermelon suga Oh well. Cohort got a cucumber egg white gin drink. Can't remember the name. He loved it. It was good (for me)

Veronica C.

Yelp
My favorite bar in Charlotte. A small speakeasy vibe with amazing drinks. The service is always on, and I love how creative the bartenders are.

Layne R.

Yelp
Pricy, Fun Little Speakeasy I took my future BIL to 5 bars on his Bachelor Weekend's first night. This was one of our favorites. The classy drinks make you feel like you have stepped back into the 1930's. The Marshmallow Old Fashioned was perfect, and the bartender was mesmerizing to watch. You cannot go wrong at The Cotton Room.

Rob B.

Yelp
I was looking for a different bar when I saw a nondescript sign that said "Cotton Room upstairs". It looked like a dark bar with a speakeasy vibe. I wasn't wrong. The bar seats about 7, there are some couches, and a couple of bar stools against the wall. The drinks are very well prepared. They did have some inventory issues as a couple of cocktails required substitutions. But altogether, it's a fun place with great tasting drinks. I'll come back.

Rick D.

Yelp
Okay, Just happened across this place when we finished the ballgame and we were, hot as Hades due to that baseball field being like it is, beautiful but hot. So where can we sit, cool off and have a libation. Yelp Genie take me somewhere awesome, BAM! The Cotton Room, took us a moment to find it, down the alley to the left and up the stairs, we walked in and what personality this place has, and master mixologist Steven was working and hooked us up. I ordered the Caparina and the wife had the Wild Thyme and man thet were just what the hot body needed, Light, refreshing, and delicious. The place was sort of empty as the game had not ended but it filled up and a lot of happy friendly people came in, and relaxed. It is small, so if you come on Friday or Saturday night, it will be challenging, so get here early and really absorb the feel of this wonderful little nugget in the CLT.

Alec B.

Yelp
Really cool atmosphere, friendly staff, drinks were good but pretty pricey. Upon entry we were greeted by the friendly bar keep, who asked if we needed help and directed us to drink menus. We got two mixed drinks and a beer. Both mixed drinks were enjoyed and my beer was good. The building and room is really cool. You feel like you're taking a step back in time to a speakeasy. (Minus of course the copious bottles on the wall!) Very cool place and would return if given the opportunity. Only reason it doesn't get a 5/5 is because of the prices, which aren't insane but also $13-15 for a mixed cocktail is a bit steep in my opinion.

Shaun M.

Yelp
Hidden gem in the heart of Uptown! Cocktails go down too easily here. I appreciate how creative the mixologist/bartenders can be. This is exactly what Charlotte needs more of. I haven't explored any food here, but the drinks and ambiance are hard to beat if you're looking for speakeasy meets Magners on draft vibes.

Jessica C.

Yelp
We come here all the time, not my first time here so I'm not sure why I'm just now doing a review. Hence my two pictures of drinks are from us celebrating in March 2020 right before covid. That drink with the gold speckles on it was amazing, I still remember it! Although I wasn't able to drink this time, I was made a sweet lil mocktail this time. I believe she said it was the wild berry with no alcohol. The guy who is always here is my FAVE bartender fr. The vibes are always right, music is always a mix from r&b, hip hop, pop, it varies which is great! Cotton room has the BEST old fashioned in the city & I will put that against anyone. Get here early because it's small and fills up quick. This time I'm glad I got a seat on a couch!!

David C.

Yelp
Always have a blast with the staff. No food but it's encouraged to pick from the numerous restaurants in the area and enjoy over a cocktail. Ambiance - check it out yourself.

Carolyn K.

Yelp
The Cotton Room is a great little tucked away treat. Squared away upstairs on the little "French Quarter" street in Charlotte, The Cotton Room was just what this 30-something wanted in comparison to some of the other louder and more club-like scenes around the Uptown area. They sported hand crafted cocktails that ranged from savory to sweet, but all packed a punch so you were definitely not left wanting. The ambiance is small and cozy, great for a small group gathering or a couple. Music was low key and matched the atmosphere.

Ryan T.

Yelp
Cool, but very small & quaint place - at least on Monday night. They had movie playing that they apparently do every couple weeks. They switched over to some light music before closing. Lower energy, but if chilled and relaxed was what you were looking for then a good place. Nice bourbon selection and prices were reasonable. Would not suggest for big or louder groups I don't think

Stephanie K.

Yelp
It wasn't very speakeasy-ish. The music was pumping making conversation difficult. Drinks were okay. Small space, good decor. Just was hoping for an intimate spot for a low key drink and conversation.

John L.

Yelp
I knew it was going to be good when we went down an alley and had to ask some locals how to find the place. They said "every night, so many people asking about that place!" So my advice might be a bigger sign :) Anyway this is a bar above a bar. No food, just great spirits. Fantastic vibe. Fun bar tenders. Sports on tv. Lots of casual seating. We liked it so much we went back a second night after dinner. It has a bit of a speakeasy feel, with even a little window in the door like the movies. GO HERE FOR MANHATTAN's

Greg W.

Yelp
I'm a regular. Recently I had a $27 bill (shes a rebel $14, shes a saint $13). I left a $5 tip. You ran my card for $27 and then $50. Its a pain in the neck to deal with this. Please make it right and I'll update this review.

Courtney T.

Yelp
This is a cute spot to grab a drink and have cozy conversation. It is a small bar with about two couches and a couple other seating options, including bar seating. The drinks are strong and the atmosphere is inviting. We came to have a drink to cap off a date night which was a perfect place. There isn't much room so if you go hopefully there is space to sit so you can stay, because there isn't standing room. The bartender was nice as well.

Diana D.

Yelp
First time checking out this place and it definitely lived up to my expectations. Think dotdotdot & cellar at DW ~vibes~ but a way more intimate setting. You walk in and the room is maybe 30'x 20' wide. Probably can't fit more than 30 people in there. Great strong cocktails and superb service! Adding this to my list of regular cocktail places to hit up. No food served at this place btw. When: Friday evening at 6:30pm; a few seats left. First come first serve seating, order at the bar Drinks: 4.8/5 - Boy was my drink strong! BUT it tasted GREAT! Now that takes skill... a strong drink without making me want to yak. I ordered the Sanderson spell and my friend ordered the orange spiced mule. We both loved our drinks! I typically go for the more creamier cocktails with milk, cream, or egg white in them so i wish there was one or two more of those options on the menu. But the menu was vast and had a lot of options to surely fit the palette of anyone in your group. Service: 5/5 - it was just 1-2 bartenders running the whole place so they were very personable with everyone having conversations and joking around. Service was quick too which was a plus. They will also help you decide on a drink if you need help. Attentive and just great all around! Vibes: 5/5 - if you're looking for a speakeasy vibe with delicious cocktails then this is your place. If you love cellar at duckworths or dotdotdot then this is right up your alley. Other: located in the French quarter. Walk into the alley, and you will see a sign for the cotton room. Walk up the steps and the door is on your left. It's uptown so parking in the area is just street parking or garage parking. Remember, uptown parking free after 6pm

Brandy D.

Yelp
Never again. The website advertises these beautiful FULL drinks but what you really get is a Dixie cup sized serving like you would at the dentist to rinse your mouth out. The service is sub par. We were ignored for a while (it was not busy) and our drinks were served in a tiny plastic cup. They were $12 for approximately 2oz of drink. MIXED drinks at that. Don't waste your time or money. Attached is what I got compared to what they advertise.

Chels T.

Yelp
Smaller intimate type vibe. Bartender wasn't overly friendly but he served us the drinks in a timely fashion. Drinks were decent to good. Would not recommend for a group of people but 2 or 3 if you just want something low key.

Lisa G.

Yelp
Really great atmosphere. Steven was an awesome bartender. Will definitely come back again!

Erika P.

Yelp
Amazing ambiance! This place was super cute and off a little ally way we dubbed diagon ally for the weekend. We didn't eat any food, but I'm not sure there was any, but the drinks were excellent! Service was also very prompt.

D A.

Yelp
3rd time here. Great every time. Large cocktail menu and all cocktails on point. But better is chatting w/ the bartenders and having them experiment w/ off menu drinks, true bartenders that know their craft. The interior vibe is great too, small and w/ character.

Zekeyahi S.

Yelp
If you're looking for cozy location to have a nice stiff drink, look no further. Located in the alleyway - second floor - The Cotton Room is nice location is great location to catch-up with a small group of friends or just have drink at the bar. The bartenders are amazing! Britanny T.

Yelp
I went with a couple friends for a drink, Honestly the decor is really nice and for A couple of selfies and a pretty drink I'd say it's worth the price but if you are more of a quality person, not just for "the gram" I'm not entirely promising you'll be satisfied. The staff seemed unbothered, just without reason uninspired to be anything but "doing there job". The drink prices were on the higher end as well. Not very much variety on a menu either.

Na'Shota L.

Yelp
1st time here. Was invited to a Whisky Weekly session with Wild Turkey. There were a few members there and some visitors like myself. I tried a rum drink off the menu. The ice watered it down fast and lost flavor. The spirit rep was lost at times with people talking over her. It almost seemed at times she had given on on trying to go through the tasting and speaking over rude people. The place upstairs is small, so voices can drown you out if multiple people are speaking. But alas, she pushed through it. The only feedback I shared was that it was hard to taste the spirits randomly proof wise. I would have liked to start at the lowest proof and go higher. Drinking a great spirit at almost 117 proof (which was my favorite), then going to a 95 proof, my taste buds were kinda closed to receiving lower proof tasting notes. If you enjoy a nice cocktail, please come try this place out. I know I will. I saw a lot of drinks on their menu I really want to try!

John T.

Yelp
Lowkey spot that had a speakeasy like feel when trying to find it in the alleyway it was located in. We didn't come in with super high expectations, but the vibe inside was really nice--great place to watch Bucs vs Saints game. My group ordered the caramel apple mule, bourbon pumpkin spice, and the whiskey marmalade. The flavors were incredibly paired together. Definitely among some of the best drinks I've tasted (rivaling the Aviary's whiskey drinks as well). Will definitely be paying this place a visit whenever I decide to visit in the future.

Derek N.

Yelp
Unique hidden bar with craft cocktails. Service was good and personalized as well. We will return!!

Jacquelene H.

Yelp
Love this hidden gem! The place is small and doesn't have much seating so come early or with a small group. The atmosphere is great and love the drink options. Only problem is when the place gets busy it takes forever to get your drink.

Shannon P.

Yelp
Short and simple: hidden small speakeasy-style bar with a romantic OR fun setting, delicious drinks, affordable prices, good bartenders, and always a good time

Roman P.

Yelp
This little speakeasy style bar is a perfect spot to catch up with a friend or take someone for a nice drink. With cocktails, beers, and wine, you can't miss with what you order. I recommend the campfire old fashioned as it comes with a marshmallow. During my stay, there was a tasting party coming through. Steven shared his expertise by showing us step by step instructions on how to create a Classic Old Fashioned. Great environment, good music, strong drinks, and great service from The Cotton Room!

Taja G.

Yelp
Really cool spot for a couple of drinks. Steven the bartender is cool and very knowledgeable. Try out the Bella Ciao or the old fashion.

Tanya C.

Yelp
This bar is a hidden gem in Charlotte. It's nooked away on an alleyway on the 2nd floor. It has such a cool cozy vibe. The bartender was so laid back and made this amazing drink. If you're looking to just relax after 5pm on a Friday night this is the spot.

Robert G. R.

Yelp
I've been here a lot... I mean A LOT, a lot. Bar staff... 5 Atmosphere... 5 Matt's propensity for calling me "Chad/Brad/Chet" or whatever name he comes up with because he forgot my name a few times... 2... but we'll round up to 5 because he's a great guy. This is a great bar. Nestled in the last bastion of old Charlotte still in existence from my younger youth, Cotton Room is an upper floor whiskey room located above Belfast pub in Latta Arcade. Any of the drinks on the menu, or off, are excellent. Each bartender is well versed in technique and their creations are impeccable and well balanced. I usually go for the French 75 on easy days, or the Vesper Martini if I'm feeling particularly pissed from my day job. The photo is of the "Soul Resonance". A great cocktail that bridges the gap between great day and a vesper martini created by Will. Somehow, he combines Rum, bourbon, various bitters, and syrups to create an excellent, Smokey sweet beverage. Come hang out and if you see me, say hello!

Jordan B.

Yelp
Drinks are so great here! The bartenders are super knowledge about drinks and can make any drink you want. They provide great suggestions on blends and mixes. Some of your new purchases will be found here! Located in Latta Arcade/Brevard Court. Street parking or garage paid parking available. Great on game days. Smaller upstairs area with some seating but not a ton. Some bar tables and two lounge areas with leather club chairs/couch seating. But don't let that deter you from stopping in! The exposed brick walls are great and give it tons of character. Never had a bad experience here! Definitely try the Cotton Room!

Stephanie C.

Yelp
Tiny bar up a set of stairs. They have a great set of craft cocktails. Bartenders attentive and good at their job. Awesome place!

Chris D.

Yelp
Great drinks, and the bartender was pleasant. It is a hidden gem down an alley of bars on the 2nd level. Reasonably priced for the quality of drinks you get. When I'm back in Charlotte, I would visit again.

Catherine B.

Yelp
Don't go here during a game night or busy downtown festivals - they didn't have the full menu available and just a handful of drinks to choose from. They came in plastic cups with no ice. I'm sure the service would have been better on a non game night, but the drinks were not so great either. I had the bee's knees and it was like straight up lemon juice. The Manhattan was okayish. The upstairs place is nice but really really small, not a lot of room, although they have 2 restrooms.

Leila R.

Yelp
Fantastic bar find with a definite "speakeasy" feel! They have an incredible whiskey selection and a very knowledgeable bartender who you can tell loves his craft cocktails and whiskey/scotch. Very good experience here from the customer service to sitting at the bar chatting with the regulars to everything we tried. The Campfire Old Fashioned was amazing and just watching it being was like a free-show with an incredible drink! I never thought I'd enjoy a cocktail involving a smoked marshmallow so much! Will definitely be back!

Neema B.

Yelp
What a cute (can I say that about a bar?) little spot! Been in Brevard Court a million times but this is my first visit to The Cotton Room. It's a sexy bar! They have some amazing cocktails, I love the creative combinations and the number of them! There are so many I want to try but I'll save them for another visit. I tried The Come-Up this time. I wasn't sure about the scotch because I am not typically a scotch drinker, but I figured it had enough buffers between the simple syrup, butters and ginger beer. I was right. Couldn't taste the scotch at all... those are the kind of drinks that sneak up on you though. I'll definitely be back to try The Mamba. They have a well stocked bar which is a great thing. It's a cool intimate spot, great for a date night or just hanging out. Good music too.. Q-Tip on repeat. Like a typical bar, there's guy talk. So if you're easily offended, hard pass.

Holly M.

Yelp
I really love this place, such a hidden gem! If you're not careful you'll miss it tucked away in the French Quarter. It's casual and doesn't fit many people but that's part of what makes it great. They change their menu every so often and I love trying the seasonal drinks. Cocktails are great no matter what you get. And if you can't decide on what you want, you can tell the bartender what you're looking for and they'll whip up something unique for you. Definitely one of my favorite spots uptown!

Raymond O.

Yelp
Loved this spot, perfect place for the burbon enthusiast. Order the Campfire Oldfashion. Its a quaint loft maybe 30ppl max. Must go to and chill for cozy vibes.

Frida K.

Yelp
Went with friends two nights in a row. First night great bartender great drinks. Some of the best cocktails we've ever had. Second night. Ehhh. Waited forever for drinks (we were the only non-affiliated people in the place). Drinks were ok. The feeling that our presence was bothersome and interrupting the conversation between the bartender and the employees from the bar downstairs was impossible to ignore. Won't be back. I hope too to one day have so much money that I do not have to give a @&$! about doing my job - but when I'm that rich I think I'll quit my job because I'll be filled with joy and won't be interested in sucking the life out of patrons of a bar looking to have an enjoyable time socializing. Left after two rounds went to Valhalla and had a great time and great drinks with a friendly and hilarious staff. Hospitality.

Toni B.

Yelp
Nice little hidden treasure hold in the wall. The vibe and atmosphere was awesome! The playlist was banging. The bar tenders were fantastic. Get a little crowed quick, but easy place to quickly grab a drink hang out and dip.

Stephany M.

Yelp
Low key great drink spot ! Specialty drinks and great vibes. If you want any type of drink they got it

Jason B.

Yelp
Had a great time in here before Garth Brooks concert. Stevie behind bay was great along with other bay staff.... Including the big guy with big vocabulary words
