On the Grid : The Civil Service

"Go to the Civil Service to get a taste of the diverse community of Bed-Stuy. Friendly to freelancers and families alike, this coffee shop is great for a pick-me-up coffee or light snack. While you're at it, check out the art on the walls featuring local artists." - Ramona Todoca

2 Civil Service Cafe Patrons Seriously Injured Following Car Crash Into Bed-Stuy Storefront - Eater NY

"Two patrons of Bed-Stuy’s the Civil Service Cafe were seriously injured Thursday morning when a car jumped the curb and smashed through the shop’s plate-glass window, according to firefighters and witnesses of the crash. The driver was headed south on Nostrand Avenue just before 8:40 a.m. when he apparently lost control and plowed his silver Dodge Challenger into the cafe, located at 279 Nostrand Ave, at the corner of Clifton Place, police said. Civil Service, which opened in 2013 according to its Instagram, is a popular gathering spot in the neighborhood, frequently bustling with locals working on laptops and chatting on benches outside. It is known for its latte art and features high-tech coffee-brewing apparatuses, along with a rotating menu of salads and all-day breakfast fare." - Noah Hurowitz

A One

Google
Upon waiting for my hair appointment I stumbled across this place looking for a bite to eat. Good space, good employee service. I ordered an iced coffee with the veggie bowl and added salmon. With the wait you’d expect everything would be made to order or very fresh but The rice was hard and the salmon was just okay. I was very underwhelmed.

Google
Consistently the best eggs sandwich ever. They always try new brands of coffee and keep it fresh supporting local roasters. Great coffee shops my fav in bk hands down.

Google
11/10!! Found it through google maps and it didn’t disappoint. The Latte was perfect and the “works” sandwich was the best egg sandwich I’ve ever had in my life. The Barista and Chef and incredible. Definitely stop in if you’re in the Brooklyn area for breakfast/lunch

Google
Great spot with amazing food. The egg sandwich and breakfast salad we ordered were delicious! Coffee was fresh, and the service was amazing as well. The staff was courteous and overall we had an great experience. We will definitely be back soon.

Google
$3 for a grocery store bagel and almost no cream cheese. The guy behind the counter was too cool to say good morning or anything while we ordered. Only spoke to let me know that my punch card was for coffee drinks only, not bagels. Sucks because their coffee just isn't that good. Avoid, go to Greenbergs which is slightly better 🤷‍♂️

Google
Stopped by for a coffee, and it was lukewarm, not much flavor, and powder floating in it. I wound up dumping it out immediately, revealing coffee grounds in the cup. Very underwhelming:/

Google
Very good breakfast sandwich (the sauce is great!), but coffee can be bad depending on the barista. The person working that day took like 10 minutes to make 2 cappuccinos and forgot what pastries we ordered. And talking about pastries, they could definitely be better. I had a croissant, and it tasted like it had been seating there for a while, plus it was not flaky. I would try again if they work on the pastries!

This isn’t a poached egg dog. Please don’t put a benny on the menu if you don’t know how to make it

Yelp
Amazing location in the middle of bedstuy, right by HVK park. This is a cute little coffee/lunch spot with lots of food options. On a sweltering hot day, I ordered the steak and eggs bowl at only $14 and a sparkling soda. The bowl had more sweet potato and salad than steak than I was expecting, but was still a delicious lunch option. Service moves pretty quick. I just wish they had ac bc the fans were not doing it

Yelp
Fire addition to the neighborhood. Meant to post this review nearly two years ago but my recent trip to Chef/Owner's 2nd Nostrand Ave Eatery Dept. Of Culture brought me back! Great coffee, chill atmosphere- indoor and outdoor. Very close to the G train. I really love the breakfast salad b/c it's not a typical thing you may think of as your first meal of the day. But its so delicious and filling that you'll find yourself craving it again! Also love the Naira bread that they serve. It's a Nigerian bread thats baked right here in NYC.

Yelp
Came in for pastries and they did not disappoint. Very good carrot cake and delicious almond croissants. Didn't get a chance to the try the coffee but it's a very cute atmosphere to work or to read up on a book.

Yelp
A fun cozy coffee shop in Bed Stuy. It's located close to the B38 bus and G train. The service is friendly and there seemed to be enough seating even on a Saturday afternoon. I had a delicious cappuccino and shared a slice of lemon pound cake with my date. The lemon cake was hearty and thick and big enough to share a slice. I also like all the ficus plants and snake plants. And they do have decaf espresso. The barista was super chill and friendly.

Yelp
One of THE BEST cafe experiences I've ever had in Brooklyn. I would put 10 starts if I could. They are so sweet and super friendly inside, the oat milk latte was perfect, and the atmosphere is really lovely. I can't say enough good things about this business - totally skip Starbucks or any other large coffee chain and take your money here. 10/10 recommend.

Yelp
More than the drinks, the ambiance and working space is great here. While living on Nostrand, the Council Cafe is great to get some work done and enjoy a drink. Their hot masala chai, although made with a mix, was pretty good!

Yelp
Absolutely delicious! The coffee was amazing and the chef did an excellent job with the food. I highly recommend the chicken sandwich.

Yelp
Coffee tasted great, possibly best chocolate-almond croissant I've had. Egg sandwich was also super tasty. Service was kind and space was chill and quiet. Can't wait to go again!

Yelp
I have walked by a few times and never entered. I am so glad, on this rainy day to discover this friendly spot. The barista Daniel was so kind and very personable. The Council café is a spot to relax in.

Yelp
Such a great spot in the neighborhood. The owner and staff are always incredibly nice and the pastries and coffee are great. I got a baguette here last week as well and it was really delicious! Highly recommend :)

Yelp
Excellent coffee and great food! Grab the breakfast sandwich! Glad this corner has a cafe again!

Yelp
Their Breakfast Salad is my favorite in the city! We also tried the Creamy Polenta and Obe Sauce today and it was delicious. Gotta give it a try.

Yelp
Love the food! If you are looking for well seasoned tasty comforty food, look NO FURTHER! The Council Cafe has got you covered. I live in Greenpoint and have been six times since discovering this place. It is conveniently located on the corner of Clinton and Nostrand and is a short one block walk from G Nostrand stop. The portions are large and delicious. My favorites are the chicken sandwich and the mac and cheese. They do NOT skimp on cheese as you can see in my picture. Now run, dont walk and check them out!

Yelp
Love their food. The grilled veggie rice bowl is extremely filling with or without salmon or chicken. Love their grilled cheese too

Yelp
So happy this corner has a cafe back! Great coffee and amazing food. Try the breakfast sandwich, one of the best I've ever had. Also at night they have a supper bowl that is amazing.

Yelp
How is it that The Council Cafe can make vegan rice bowl surprisingly delicious? What about that Gulf Shrimp Salad that was discontinued with the pandemic, I assume b/c of sourcing issues--my god! It was so, so delicious! I regret not taking pictures of either. I was so caught up in the taste I lost my normal senses, which often require me--still-- to catalogue delicious meals.

Yelp
Oh my God, The Council Cafe was truly epic. The location is unbeatable. Team is really courteous and definitely will help you with anything. Everything we bought was awesome and the menu itself was to die for. Certainly will be back.

Yelp
This place recently opened, and I've been grateful for it! I only get their latte, but it's great. New favorite in the area. Rich espresso flavor from Good Day roasting (LIC-based small batch roaster) and well-foamed milk with great balance. Ambience is charming.
