Meet Kiki, an Exciting New Gay Bar Replacing a Pair of Shuttered Shaw Dives - Eater DC

"Dirty Goose co-founder Justin Parker says he’s 'happy' for his outgoing general manager and agrees the city could use more LGBTQ-friendly bars. 'It’s always good to have competition — especially when you’re on the same block,' says Parker, who expanded his 5-year-old bar’s rooftop during the pandemic." - Tierney Plumb

U Street Bar Seeks More Rooftop Drinking Space - Eater DC

"Nearly 2-year-old gay bar Dirty Goose (913 U Street NW) is working on making year-round drinking a thing on its growing rooftop. “Our goal is to double the size of our current rooftop by occupying the roof of the commercial building next door,” co-owner Justin Parker tells Eater of a plan to take over an adjoining rooftop (911 U Street NW). The expansion would increase seating upstairs from 28 to 43, and total occupancy from 48 to 99, according to an ABRA application first spotted by Popville. In addition to providing more space, Parker says a quarter of the new addition would be enclosed so that rooftop drinking can occur all year — “and not just during warmer weather.” Of course, all of that is dependent on permitting issues and final approval by local officials. “We should have a much better idea about the timeline in the first week of August,” Parker says." - Tierney Plumb

Great drinks, great vibes, and absolutely incredible customer service. As it sometimes happens, my friend had a few too many doubles, but the manager and security guard helped everyone return home safely. They helped me get my friend down two flights of stairs, advised me with timing the booking of the Uber, and even assisted us in finding the correct car on a crowded street. The folks here genuinely cared about my friend’s safety, health, and did everything to help the night go as smoothly as possible. Seriously such great people! I will be coming here again, but advising everyone to take it slower next time! 😅 The staff here made everyone feel extremely cared for, in addition to the excellent music and really lovely clientele. Definitely felt like a less judgmental and more positive atmosphere than some other gb locations in DC. Thanks to everyone who lended a hand tonight! Y’all are the backbone of society lol. Side note: because the manager asked for the link to the emesis bags I brought with me, here’s an essential for anyone who has the occasional messy night out, or any establishment that serves alcohol: https://a.co/d/em8bTmb

Amazing happy hour, good drinks, and great bartenders. A little quiet early but bartenders and patriots are nice. Planned to have one drink but had 4! Go for happy hour and make friends!

Love this place!! Really fun vibes up on the rooftop. Love the artwork. Highly recommend!

A friend and I were in DC for one night and randomly walked in; Jimmy made us some good cocktails and gave us a gin tasting! We sat and chatted with him and some regulars for a while; it was a great experience on a quiet Sunday night 🙂

I felt discriminated at this place. I was hanging out and consuming here for aproximately 2 hours. I ask for an Uber and it was raining outside. I went out and since it was raining, I wanted to get back in. The woman at the entrance wouldnt let me in even though I had my ID and she was letting in other white people. I am a latina and I felt discriminated. I encourage people to not support this place. That woman (who didnt gave me her name bc I wanted to make a complaint about this)was rude and even violent with me. This kind of place should be shut downa nd I think the management should care about this kind of behavior from their employees. Ill never come back again.

I have been coming to Dirty Goose for a few years now. As a queer black woman, The Goose has been a safe haven for me. I feel super comfortable being in in this establishment. From the security to bartenders, I always feel so welcomed. For example, Dashon (sp) is always smiling and making sure I’m good. You can’t find that anywhere else in DC. Love him and love The Dirty Goose!!

Google
Excellent new queer bar that is actually making genuine efforts to be a safe space for all (unlike one particular nearby establishment). I hear queer people talking about how comfortable and safe it is every time I go. Classy decor, an awesome mix of new and iconic music, refreshing rooftop, and an attentive and fun staff. This is definitely my new favorite queer bar in DC. I haven't been to the brunch yet, but I am excited to try it!

Google
First things first, I gave it 2 stars because they sell cookies and the cookies are delicious! That would have earned them 5 stars alone but the following experience warranted a loss of a few stars and I feel I'm being generous by even giving them 2. CREDIT CARD WAS CHARGED DOUBLE A DAY AFTER WE VISITED. We were there in a group of 4. We moved tables a few times due to the weather. Each time, we asked if we should close out our bill but the bartender said no that we could just move it with us. When we went to leave, we asked for the bill. We paid it and signed the receipt and left. The next day we had 2 charges on our CC. One charge was for the bill we paid and signed for. The other charge was for double the original charge. We tried to call to get an explanation but all phone numbers listed for the bar online do not work. We emailed the bar and the next day we received a response from the owner/bartender. His explanation was that when we went to close out, he didn't want us to have to wait while he went upstairs to see what our bill from the other bartender was so he just charged us an amount. Then later that evening he figured up what he thought we owed and charged us a second time for the full bill (the half we already paid plus the other half). He then said that IF we wanted to be refunded, we could call the next day. He left no number. We emailed back and said we needed a number to call and that of course we wanted a refund as we had been overcharged. We received no response for 2 days and had to email a second time. As of today, 6 days after we visited the bar, we still have not received a refund for the extra money we paid. Though the cookies are good and the drinks weren't bad, we won't be back.

Yelp
Vibes were vibing. Drinks were strong and the music was on point. We're from out of town and met some nice folks out there.

Yelp
The Dirty Goose is a more understated gay bar than what one would expect. It has 3 floors and a bar on every floor. I didn't hang around the first floor much at all, but the second floor has a darker, lounge vibe, though it's quite narrow. The top floor is an open rooftop that just had a deck expansion that makes the space even bigger! I wouldn't necessarily call Dirty Goose a gay bar, as much as a bar that services primarily queer people. The people and the atmosphere are understated, though it works to make a more lax bar environment than what you may expect at a gay bar. There was also a healthy mix of representation from the female -demographic, which may be refreshing. My main negative for why this review is only a 3 is because their drinks are so expensive! I ordered a grapefruit slushi out of recommendation and made it a double, and it was $20! The drink wasn't strong at all, and after I finished the actual drink, there was still half a cup of shaved ice. I'd recommend Dirty Goose if you want a non-competitive night out at a gay bar. I'd just recommend NOT ordering the slushies.

Yelp
I've been a fan of Dirty Goose since they first opened their doors on U street. It's an upscale place to hang with friends and have a nice drink in a welcoming and warm environment. Dirty Goose brings it to the runway with their cocktails. They have excellent drinks. I love all of their frozen cocktails. Every single time, they are delicious but don't skimp on the alcohol. I also love their margaritas. Any flavor you choose will be delicious. I also recommend some shots. The bartenders can handle it all. During the pandemic, TDG has been so creative to offer pandemic friendly good times. Their to go window has been a blessing to us all. You can get all the good cocktails you love and head back to your own place to enjoy them. They also do drink packages to go and delivery. This was nice for a NYE treat! I am also obsessed with their rooftop. It's huge and so so so nice to hang out on when it's nice out. Overall, Dirty Goose is a blast and you'll love it every time!

Yelp
Keeping in mind that you have to make reservations to go to a bar in DC right now, this place was very accommodating. It's easy to make reservations on the website and get times confirmed. We checked in inside and sat out at the fire pits on the street. Our waiter, who I think was either the manager or owner was very nice and accommodating. He was always making sure we were okay and had enough to drink. Overall it was a great experience to just relax outside near the fire with some drinks. The neighborhood is gentrifying and the gay bars are disappearing unfortunately. Please enjoy it while you can.

Yelp
One of my favorite places until today. We usually come and the security guards are always nice. They ask for your id, scan it and let you in. Today was different some weird wanna be "drill sergeant" was so too much told my wife about having her shoes off, searched everybody's bags, just was giving Nellie's vibes so even though the weird security guard was a black woman I will not be back. I'm really sad because this place is generally welcome of everyone, however, based on today I'm so good...

Yelp
Great spot in DC! One of the better gay bars anywhere. It's small and quite with friendly staff, great drinks, and good company. Always a joy to visit!

Yelp
Rude staff. Horrible service. Do not recommend. Staff was reminiscent of people of Walmart.

Yelp
Fun Rupaul drag race nights with Tatiana! Recommend this to come with friends! Music is iffy but atmosphere is fun!

Yelp
I came here to celebrate a friends birthday and the service was horrible. The bartender refused to share his name, they locked the door before all of the patrons were out of the establishment and when we tried to use the restroom on the first level they told us to go back upstairs because they decided to clean the floors early before they closed. On top of all that, they are highly priced and not worth what they charge.

Yelp
Bar experience: We went here only because I parked in front of it. It seemed like the right thing to do. Ok, it was the happy hour til 8 sign but had I not parked in front I would've missed this place. When we walked in there was a "greeter" checking IDs which seemed a little weird but if its a bar only then that makes sense. I thought it was a small restaurant but we only wanted the bar experience (happy hour drinks) so we proceeded to the bar. The bartender was waiting for us when we got to the bar and greeted us with a smile that I thought was fake however, he was genuinely happy and pretty attentive. We chatted about different types of liquors and the drinks he made were pretty good. My drink was smoother than I expected and smoother than I would've like but I found out later that they didn't have the proper cream for my drink so he changed the ingredients a bit which didn't turn out bad. I will definitely go back to try some more drinks and maybe a bite. I'm not sure if it was just bar food but the samples/tapas/appetizers had nice presentations.

Yelp
//+1 for improved drinks and customer service. Note: I had a pleasant experience with both the customer service and drink quality. I believe in giving second chances.

Yelp
Came here on a whim and it makes me sad that I never came here before. And this is where I wholeheartedly believe in the whole "better late than never" because I need to come back ALL the time! The bartender said half off scurrying for happy hour! What?!? Oops maybe I shouldn't give it away but this is amazing and he was so nice. Just had one drink-coke and rum. Can't wait to be back!
google avatar

Yelp
Great spot! Friendly bartenders, good drinks! Something for everyone here on 3 different floors (depending on which day of the week, some are not always open).

Yelp
Saturday night fever - Went to The Dirty Goose last night and boy was it a blast! Only the first and second floor was accessible, but I spent all my time on the second floor. The bar tenders are super nice, the DJ (Lexis Lane) played a great mix that got the floor full (and singing!), and overall a welcoming crowd. A mix as far as ages, but leaning more on the 20-somethings side. The bathroom isn't quite finished, but that wasn't too much of an issue (soap was freely available, floors were clean, so I was happy). Overall, will DEFINITELY be coming back!

Yelp
This is a good after-hours spot for cocktails. It seems like you end up here if Nelly's or other popular places are crowded. The ambiance is nice and clean and drinks are strong. There isn't really a dance vibe here, it is more for grabbing drinks with friends than shaking that groove thang. The few times I have been here it has served as a nice respite from the hustle of the surrounding places as you decide what's next.

Braxton M.

Yelp
One of the best LGBTQ+ bars in DC. Friendly bartenders, great music, and beautiful roofdeck!

Antonio F.

Yelp
I've been coming to this place for a while and I was very poorly treated by the front door guy. Very aggressive and unfriendly. As they closed he pushed my friends and myself out physically and shoved me off the patio and told us to get the heck out. As a queer person I would never expect this kind of approach from a staff of a queer place. It doesn't feel like a safe space when we're physically and verbally harassed by the security staff. Its not becoming not an isolated incident but a common feature of this establishment. Do we not deserve better treatment?

Trey M.

Yelp
Wow, what a time! Great customer service, especially from Robby and Synkami some of the awesome bartenders!

Yelp
Gregory is amazing. Very eclectic bar and lots of fun! Highly recommend! Mixology at its finest.

Yelp
Very disappointed tonight. Generally have had a great time here, but tonight they f*d us over on the charges. They said we had more drinks than we had and by a lot. Maybe they confused us with another table? Been consistently coming here spending a few hundred dollars a week even in Covid times but that is done. Will not come back after the gross over charge tonight. If you come here you better keep count of your drinks. Better to go to Trade or Number 9. They seem care about their regulars. So disappointed. I know it's tough times but this is not the way.
google avatar

Yelp
This is strictly a bar with assorted seating arrangements for your choosing depending on your group. I really enjoyed my first visit and will continue coming back. I enjoyed my Friday night happy hour with friends sitting around a table sharing our week and trying out each other's drinks. It's a change of pace where you don't have to talk into people's ears or yell across the table in order to have a decent conversation. Yes they do have music playing in the background but it wasn't overpowering my drink order at the bar. While they do not have a food menu, they are kind enough to let you order in or bring food food from any other vendor nearby.

CJ W.

Yelp
Dirty Goose is my favorite bar in DC! Great drinks (shout out to Will) and great bouncers (shoutout to Derrick)
google avatar

Yelp
We went pretty soon after this place opened and had a fantastic time. My friends and I all got all you can eat / drink and hung out for a while. The food is tapas style which was fun, we got to try a lot of different things and really liked several of them. The mimosas and BMs were fantastic. A lot of places around give you such weak drinks that there is not reason to even bother; this place did a good job and even garnished the BMs nicely. After we finished brunch we went to the roof for more, stronger drinks, before heading out for Sunday. Everything was really nice, staff was friendly and attentive.
google avatar

Teodymel C.

Yelp
Great service but watchout for your receipt. Close the tab every round of drinks in this time of the pandemic. They charged more than what you ordered since it is a table service. Never close at the end. Count your drinks or whatever lee Clownery in the receipt. Got charged 600 bucks for 2 hours. 9/13/2020. 7-9pm.
google avatar

Kyle O.

Yelp
Always a good time here. 3 stories including a rooftop which I see there are permits to expand it! They have happy hour 5-9 M-F and events with BaNaka like trivia!
google avatar

Marie H.

Yelp
This is a solid place. Granted when I first walked in I didn't know I was walking into a "gay bar". Yelp said it not me. But it's clear that I cannot see. I missed the rainbow flags. All I saw was 1/2 priced drinks lol. And at that point do you really care? Not me. Parking was a breeze on a Friday night around 7pm. Lucked up I guess. U street parking is always crazy. They use fresh ingredients and great quality liquor and our bartender was nice. I say this because usually when entering an establishment for HH I expect rail drinks. But not here. There entire cocktail list was 1/2 off. Steal alert! Good thing I'm not a lush. I only had one drink under $5. Say no more!
google avatar

Yelp
First time... I came early so that I can get home. Not really into the rowdy crowds. Nice ambience and not overly crowded. I received service as soon as I walked up to the bar which is a plus. Seems like a mature crowd. I would come back for another eventful night.

Scott K.

Yelp
Before covid, I used to like this place a lot. They had a decent rose, a decent crowd, and decent service. After tonight, I'm never coming back. 1) the decent enough rose before covid turned into cupcake . 2) the bartender waited on every coked out twink who'd come up after me before she'd bothered to make eye contact with me. Maybe it was the fake designer sunglasses they were wearing at 11:00 at night that grabbed her attention on the rooftop? Idk, I don't have time for that. 3) this bar used to be nice and chill and low key. Idk... whatever happened here isn't working. Bless y'all.

Yelp
Okay, it's time I write a rave review for the Dirty Goose. In my humble opinion, this is one of the few bars on U Street that is giving me something that other bars don't -- gay, straight, or otherwise. And I think it can give it to you, too. The Dirty Goose says it's a gay bar, but I think more appropriately it is purely queer. I have made 2 new Lesbian friends here that said "we wanted to go out and stumbled here because we didn't know where to go." We've met friends sitting in the front window seat. We've met friends on the roof. Heck, we've reconnected with friends almost everywhere in this building. How? I think it's because it is loosey goosey, and their drink specials vary, their themed nights are thrown together, and heck, it can be an all-around dive. I ABSOLUTELY LOVE THAT! I want a space that can transform and have "good nights" and "bad nights" and "the best nights." I want a bar to be different. I want to waitstaff to take risks, give you drinks that are made up that don't have fancy names, and if it sucks will give you another. Whoever is running this joint is fostering that, intentionally or unintentionally, I can't get enough of the space you're creating. Thanks for brining back something lacking on U Street, Dirty Goose. I'll be back again and again.
google avatar

Yelp
the worst immature place I have ever been. They told us they were at capacity. They had 3 people and denied us. They were beyond rude. Never get our business again
google avatar

Yazan H.

Yelp
Allowed my friends to get verbally and physically assaulted. Staff and managers did nothing about it when we complained. They were both incompetent and did not care about the well-being of my friends nor us complaining trying to get something done. Even worse, the management seemed offended and bothered by our complaints. Clearly they don't care about their customers and are willing to throw us aside to make money. Never returning!
google avatar

Michael T.

Yelp
The Dirty Goose is my favorite lgbt bar in the area. Very friendly staff, great happy hour deals, and amazing free vodka hours on Saturday. Their roof top is amazing as well. Definitely recommend this place!
google avatar

Michael B.

Yelp
I enjoy every single time I visit this establishment. They have superb staff and I hope they get to keep them running this fine gay pub. Alfredo is the best. He's very friendly and a good chap to have around. The roof top bar is a gem in this neighborhood.
google avatar

Yelp
This Place is all about money not the well fair of the people that come here , I witnessed a young man so drunk could barely stand get served then later that night the same young man was past out on the first floor bathroom and all the workers did was tell his friends to get him out the club didn't offer water or anything just made his friends drag him out when I asked to speak to a manger the doorman was rude and said I could not return in that is the worst display of humanity I have ever seen. Shame on you #Down with the Goose.
google avatar

John T.

Yelp
The guy at the door was a complete asshole. We came from out of town and he was a total dick.

Wilber P.

Yelp
Tony the bartender had the nastiest attitude I've ever seen on someone. Even when we were ordering drinks as soon as we came in he had a nasty petty attitude. Soon after our drinks were served we decided to leave. I won't be returning, this was my first and final time at the dirty goose.
google avatar

Billy C.

Yelp
Good-The Dirty Goose has a roof deck bar which is nice if you want some fresh air and the bartender outside was friendly and pured a nice drink. Bad- Decor is odd, rundown and the walls need some serious paint. The bartenders inside struggle to be nice. The roof deck planters were all full of totally dead plants.... It seems to be caught in between trying to being fancy and a total dive bar... It feels like a place that the owner stopped caring about and it just opened.
google avatar

Patrick T.

Yelp
I'll admit, my first experiences at The Dirty Goose were not fantastic, however they have stepped up their game. Following the grand reopening this weekend Dirty Goose will definitely be added into my rotating roster of gay bars in DC. The first floor bar is gorgeous. It looks like something out of nice hotel. The second floor seems to be more of the restaurant space and is nice but impersonal. The rooftop though, is magnificent. It's not large but the fact that it has a bar is nice and it's a little more intimate than say Uproar or Nellies. Strong drinks and a fun atmosphere always make for a good time. There a couple kinks the bartenders need to work on, however I will keep coming back. Disclaimer: I have not tried the food, but will make it a priority to come back and update the review.
google avatar

Will D.

Yelp
Most of the bartenders are nice. However, if you're not a six-pack guy, don't wait for Kotcher to serve you. You're much more likely to be served by literally any other bartender here.

Issac K.

Yelp
Best gay bar in DC. Most diverse group of customers as well as bartenders. If you want to feel comfortable and have a good time, come here. Whether you are alone or with friends, you will meet some pretty great people. As long as you are not an entitled as* the bartenders are welcoming and super inclusive. The owners have a huge heart for the gay community in DC, and will do everything in their power to accommodate you.Plus they have a heavyyyy pour, so the prices are not bad at all for the amount of alcohol you are actually getting.
google avatar

Giselle R.

Yelp
Never have I felt so unheard and frankly disrespected in an establishment. I went out with friends to celebrate on the night of pride when one of my friends (female) was verbally and physically attacked. We immediately sought the help of the bouncers and management. Both times we were dismissed. Even after clearly pointing out the person responsible, management failed to even SPEAK to them. A joyous night was immediately turned sour by this random attacker and the management who couldn't seem to care less about how were were treated and how we felt. I was appalled by the management's behavior, if this is how they treat serious issues I would hate to see how smaller problems are dealt with. If you actually want to have a good night AND feel safe in your surroundings go to Nellie's or Pitchers.
google avatar

Raymond A.

Yelp
If you call it gay in DC they will just show up? I am puzzled as to the point of this place. The food is okay. The drinks are okay. The service has always been excellent, but I'm pretty and that might make a difference. I don't hate this bar, but I don't love it either. Meh.
google avatar

Dennis R.

Yelp
I've been here for a brunch and for a few nights out. On my nights out I had a great time. Drinks were stiff and well made and the bartenders were very nice. One bartender ran downstairs to get a cucumber garnish for my Hendricks Martini. The brunch was a little odd. The food was good and they served nice drinks but I'm not sure they are quite up to the unlimited small plates format, which...I can't even imagine how challenging that must be to actually execute. My friends that got a single plate got very good food and were very happy with it. It wasn't that the small plates were bad they were just a little strange and gimmicky (I keep remembering the tiny cast iron pan they served one dish in). I'm not an expert but I can't help but think they might be better off getting back to basics on the food. So I'd say 5 stars for the night out....3 stars for brunch.
google avatar

Daniel K.

Yelp
Went here since were were able to get a last minute reservation for five for brunch. Overall was great. Greg our waiter was very friendly and made sure to proactively refill our champagne and orange juice for the bottomless mimosas. Much nicer than having to constantly ask for refills. Also, no pressure to move on as we lingered for the full two hours allowed with the bottomless mimosas. The food was pretty good and came out quickly. Overall, will definitely return here for brunch.

Yelp
Fabulously gay! One of my favorite go-to bars on U Street. Yes there may not be a dance floor, but this unpretentious local three-level bar is filled with great drink specials, nice bartenders, good music and is CLEAN. Theres a new recent addition to the bar which consists of opening the entryway's floor to ceiling windows and with a blue/gold theme couch and table area-super cute and trendy. I have no idea what the hours are for happy hour but it seems every time I come here (on sunday funday) theres a deal and drinks are about $4-6. I love the rooftop as well and for those who are afraid of sunburn there are plenty of umbrellas!

We checked out the Dirty Goose for weekend brunch. Certain things were done up to standard but other issues need some work. The space itself is quaint but very bright and airy and the staff was pretty attentive. The food and the menu itself was a bit odd though. For instance, the menu has two sections, prix fixe and a-la-carte but unfortunately none of the prix fixe menu items were available a-la-carte which is a bit unusual in my experience. I didn't want to get the prix fixe menu (it was nice that Dirty Goose didn't require everyone at the table to order prix fixe like some places do) and so the menu items were limited. I ordered a "summer vegetable omelette" which just had peppers and onions (I don't even think there was any cheese). I wasn't expecting greatness because it's just an omelette but if you are going to advertise it as "summer vegetable" maybe include squash, zucchini, corn, etc. Anyway it came with an enormous side of fruit (summer fruit thank goodness) and potatoes which I guess made up for it. I tried a few of the prix fixe menu items and some of them were pretty good but they all kind of look the same -- some variation of brown, bread and meat. There are only 2 salads on the whole menu and they're a-la-carte only. So yeah. I think a re-tooling of the menu is in order. If you are a place on U Street advertising a $40 brunch experience then you really need to have your stuff together because competition is fierce.
