I've been following The Douglas' instagram for the past month, watching with excitement as they prepared to open. I generally try to give new businesses some time to find their stride, but by chance, I had a meeting in Savannah that lined up with their very first week open and decided to give it a try — everything felt seamless.
I travel a lot for work and pleasure, and real hospitality is rare these days. The Douglas got it right. The building is beautiful and full of character, but it’s the people who make it special. Every employee I met was warm, welcoming, and seemed genuinely happy to be there. It felt lived in, thoroughly thought out, attentive, but private.
Breakfast was incredible — fresh, diverse, and far beyond what you’d expect from a hotel. I even had the chance to meet their Culinary Director, Jacques Larson, who was down from Charleston that week. He couldn’t have been kinder, and it was clear his influence is behind the amazing food. The best part was that it's all included in the rate! It felt non-transactional.
My room was stylish and comfortable, with nice touches like a Marshall speaker that made it feel personal and not at all cookie-cutter. It really felt like staying at a friend’s historic home — if that friend had impeccable taste and great cocktails.
I don't generally write reviews, but when things are better than good, it's worth the effort. Can’t wait to come back and see the next part of their hotel and restaurant take life.
