London’s Oldest Pubs, Ranked By Dubious Historical Claims

"Ye Olde Factor: The fireplace, the moody dark ceilings, the painting of a distinguished gent who probably gives History teachers the tingles. That being said, this Hampstead charmer has undergone something of a Vinterior-esque facelift so is less decaying boozer, more stylish hangout perfect for cooling your sizzling interior design envy with pints of Blue Moon. Alleged Notable Regulars: Legendary actors Peter O’Toole, Oliver Reed, and Elizabeth Taylor’s second favourite husband, Richard Burton." - jake missing, heidi lauth beasley, sinead cranna

The Duke Of Hamilton - Review - Hampstead - London - The Infatuation

"In many ways, The Duke Of Hamilton is living the successful Londoner dream. It has a working fireplace, a big, beautiful back garden, flourishing house plants, and the confidence to paint a ceiling a dark moody blue. Despite being around since the 18th century, this boozer has undergone something of a Vinterior-esque facelift and is now the kind of stylish hangout that pairs pints of Blue Moon with serious interior design envy. Its location on the kind of picture-perfect Hampstead street that tourists probably think about every time someone mentions ‘scones’, also makes it an excellent place to escape London, without actually having to leave London. Order a pint and eavesdrop on sensational conversations about a victorious denial of the neighbour’s loft conversion planning permission. We’re sure previous patron, Richard Burton, would approve. photo credit: Koray Firat photo credit: Koray Firat photo credit: Koray Firat" - Heidi Lauth Beasley

The Duke of Hamilton, nestled in the heart of London, offers a charming, quintessentially British pub experience with a few quirks. One of its standout features is the lovely small beer garden, which provides a cozy and intimate atmosphere for patrons to enjoy their drinks al fresco nestled at the back between other buildings. The service at The Duke of Hamilton is notably friendly, with the staff consistently going out of their way to make customers feel welcome. However, it's worth mentioning that the bar was staffed by only one bartender during my visit on a Saturday, which struck me as a bit odd given the weekend crowd. This led to longer wait times for drinks and a somewhat slower pace of service, which could be improved with additional staff during peak hours. The poor bloke legged it downstairs to change the keg! As for the food, the fish and chips came highly recommended on Instagram, but I found them to be slightly overrated. While the dish was certainly enjoyable, it didn't quite live up to the social media hype. The fish was well-cooked and the batter crispy, but there was nothing particularly exceptional about it that set it apart from other pub offerings in the area. For £19 it might be worth trying something else on the menu. Despite these minor drawbacks, The Duke of Hamilton remains a lovely spot for a casual drink or meal. Its warm, inviting atmosphere and charming beer garden make it worth a visit, especially if you're in the mood for a relaxed and friendly pub experience. With a bit of adjustment to their staffing on busy days, this pub has the potential to elevate the overall experience for its patrons.

Food is really amazing. However there was a confusing on the order and couldn’t get my order for a bit long time so my beer got warm and my chips got cold. Besides they did not ask for any allergy or anything. Atmosphere was nice. Overall I did not have a quite good experience as service but food and atmosphere are great.

Yesterday I visited The Duke of Hamilton for a meal and entertainment, and I must say, the experience was delightful overall. The food, although well presented, fell a bit short in terms of seasoning. We tried the schnitzel and baked feta salad, both of which were just okay. However, the atmosphere of the place more than made up for it. The staff were incredibly welcoming and friendly, making us feel right at home. The cozy ambiance added to the charm of the evening. To top it off, I enjoyed a glass of natural Italian wine that was a true delight. The cherry on the cake was the live jazz gig, which provided the perfect soundtrack to our evening. Overall, I would rate my experience a solid 9 out of 10. While the food could use a bit more flavor, everything else about The Duke of Hamilton made it a memorable evening. Highly recommended for a relaxed night out with good music and great company.

Had heard the Korean chicken was incredible - but was pretty underwhelmed. It was good but not great, felt like it had been heated up in the oven and drizzled with a bit of sauce. Lentil curry main was similar, just okay. Apple strudel dessert was very nice 👌🏼 For £70 I won’t be hurrying back.

Very nice pub - we felt very welcoming. The food is good but its on the pricey side. Mussel in cream sauce £18 - it is very good but it is sold out very quickly so get your hands on it if you are thinking about ordering it. The mussels are fat and the quantity is just about right. I'd add more salt but everything is perfect. They even give you lemon water to wash away the fishy smell on your fingers. Chicken schnitzel £24 - large portion with plenty of capers. Personally not a big fan of capers but I quite like it with the anchovies they put on top. Very warm inside of the restaurant even on a freezing day! We had a good time!

This is a charming pub with good selection of beers however it doesn’t compare to some of its neighbouring pubs in terms of food and atmosphere. The Sunday roast wasn’t great despite the price. I couldn’t chew nor cut the beef with normal knife let alone eat it. Toilets were clean and staff were friendly.

Yelp
Quiet pub located on a side street from the busy Heath St. Pub was very spacious, clean, and tables nicely distanced. The front porch is covered, so very nice for a summer day. Food was good and big sized portions - we had the pork should roast and mussels. The sauce for the mussels was rich and delicious with the bits of pancetta bacon. The pork shoulder roast was tender, swimming in gravy, and accompanied by crispy potatoes and nicely cooke cabbage and carrots.

Yelp
We had dinner here on the way to Hampstead Heath and the food was fresh and solid. Nothing fancy but clean and homey. A overall friendly restaurant.

Yelp
Reopened and refurbished just this month. Great little local pub and now with a full kitchen and Sunday roast.

Yelp
Cosy interior, good range of ales, friendly service at the bar and a cool cat taking up space on the bench we sat on all added up to a good afternoon pint experience. Factor in that prices are keener than some of the other pubs close by and you're on to a winner.

Yelp
Lovely pub in Hampstead, half way up the hill in a road on the right. Ignore the Stella Artois umbrella outside, they may serve the cleaning fluid on tap but the rest of their drinks are interesting and at least the ones I had tasted very good. Aside from a good choice of ales they have brands of lager, white beer and stout on regular taps that I have never seen before. In fact, they have so many good drinks that for once I am going to resist taking a star away for them serving the ghastly Belgian swill. The cricket memorabilia around the walls is very interesting. Apparently this is a cricket pub, well they even have their own team. There is 1 television for sports but it's not intrusive, so you can easily ignore it if it's not your thing. Very friendly landlord too, who is clearly doing a good job. I almost feel bad for saying this because it's not how I rate venues and is not why I gave this place so many stars, but I simply wouldn't feel right if I didn't give the pub an honourable mention for having the most attractive barmaids that I have seen.

Yelp
The Duke is a true Hampstead locals pub. The crowd, the decor, the beer selection, everything. Many of the pubs in Hampstead have turned into more upscale gastropubs, but the Duke stays true to the English tradition. But bring your cash, as the Duke doesn't accept solo. The outside seating is lovely in the summertime. The pub also is tucked away from the High Street, so it does not get too crowded and you can always find a place to sit in the sun and to enjoy a pint or glass of wine to unwind.

Yelp
A good old style pub. Okay for a couple of beers but they do have a big screen TV which I don't like. But when there isn't a big game on it is usually off. Cozy. UPDATE 2012: The pub has had a bit of refurb. It's still very comfy inside but outside they have fitted a lovely beer garden in the back. The front tables still remain. Can definitely see the new beer garden being used quite a bit in the summer. New management has saved this local from becoming houses. If in Hampstead, definitely a pub to visit.

Yelp
What a great pub! Been there before for a drink after a stroll around the Heath - only to be positively surprised by a bunch of Morris dancers coming to perform in their beer garden! Apparently, it's their bi-annual custom to visit certain Hampstead pubs every time the clocks change. I also went there a week ago to see the Old Jewish Jokes - a stand-up comedy gig in their cellar. Would definitely recommend it for both of the above :)

Yelp
Small pub serving very good beers, no music, no food, but excellent place to watch rugby in particular and sport in general.
