The Duke of Hamilton is located on a quiet side street in Hampstead, northwest London. The nearest Tube is Hampstead.
This pub dates back to 1721 and takes its name from the 4th Duke of Hamilton. The pub was once a favourite watering hole of Hollywood legends Richard Burton, Peter O’Toole, and Oliver Reed.
The pub was refurbished and reopened in 2019 and is now operated by independent pubco @locipubs, which runs four local pubs across north and west London.
This is a traditionally decorated, one-bar pub with a wonderful old-world charm to it. The servery has a unique character and is centrally located, with the bar area forming a ‘U’ shape around it, offering plenty of seating to the left and a snug area to the right.
The decor consists of boarded floors, sage green walls, fireplaces at either side, and a collection of photos and prints, along with a portrait of the Duke himself. There is also a jazz club in the basement, and to the rear and front of the pub are plenty of benches and seating for the warmer months.
The beer selection is solid, offering a mix of familiar favourites, local brews, and cask ale. I opted for a Pravha; my pint hit the spot, price point was above average. Food-wise, it’s seasonal, pub classics, beer-battered haddock and chips costs £19.50. Roasts are available on Sundays.
I arrived just before 3pm on a mild Friday afternoon in November. The pub was calm and relaxed, with a few locals chatting and a small group enjoying a late lunch. Service was first-class — warm, friendly, and welcoming.
The pub hosts The Hampstead Jazz Club, with intimate live performances from an eclectic mix of established musicians, as well as exciting emerging talent, every weekend.
I thoroughly enjoyed my visit to this 300-year-old boozer, especially the traditional surroundings and fantastic hospitality. The range of beers will please most, the food is popular with locals, and the Jazz Club is a great addition to the pub’s offering. I loved it here — get it on your to-visit list.
