12 Best Taco Stops in Durham, North Carolina | Eater Carolinas

"Located in East Durham, the Durham Green Flea Market has been a vital social and economic hub for the city’s Latino community for more than a decade. Shoppers can find all kinds of goods, from boots to jewelry to clothing to furniture, along with plenty of food. At any given time there are six or more different food vendors offering all manner of tacos, tortas, sopas, and more, making La Pulga (the Flea) the perfect spot for a taco crawl followed by some shopping. Look for al pastor, carnitas, birria, and a myriad of other taco options at any of the rotating or permanent vendors." - Matt Lardie

Picked up some cool items, variety of vendors. Food was excellent. It's a flea market, so if you're bougie this is not your place. Had a great time and will come back next time I visit. Transactions are easier if you speak Spanish, but you'll get along adequately if you don't.

If you're planning to be a vendor, don't get discouraged early. Customers arrive mostly around 11:00 am. They have tables for you to setup your merchandise. Friendly and nice people to do business with.

Love coming here every weekend that I can. The food and drinks are great! Such a good vibe. Really cultural. I would highly recommend you to come visit this place sometime and try out the chamoyadas and the tacos.

Great place to have a great time with family and friends food is delicious 😋 also don’t forget to get any accessories for your mobile 📱⌚️devices and 🚗 car 🚘

There's a $2 parking fee if you park on the lot and not the street. They only take cash, so be aware! Also pretty much all the vendors inside, whether food or other goods, seem to take cash only. There's an ATM inside the indoor structure, so that was definitely helpful. The food and aguas frescas were great too. 😊

It was a great flea market, clean, many options inside and out!

Good tiny flea market. Parking can be a huge mess but lots of food selections

Yelp
they let a old mexican lady try to take my table that i paid for when i asked her nicely once before and she took it down. just to put it back up when i started to pack my stuff up because of the wind. After we walked to talk to someone in charge as i expected she left with all her stuff by the time we got back there was nothing to say and she didn't pay. they're unprofessional and need to work on their flea market to make sure stuff like this doesn't happen. i don't recommend this busines.

Yelp
This place seems like a well-kept secret for locals and basically a Little Mexico in a random location. The taco food trucks are authentic, cheap and amazing quality - similar to what I had in LA and Mexico City. The churros were a bit disappointing - over-fried and dry and they only had the caramel-filled ones as a option when I went. Typically they also have other filling options and there's also plenty of stalls selling veggies, elotes, and random stuff you would expect at a flea market. Most people speak only Spanish there, so either brush up on your Spanish or find someone to translate if you can :)

Yelp
"Great flea market: A taste (in both senses) of community in Durham" I saw a posting about this place on Carpe Durham (focused just on the food) and decided to check it out. In a word, "Wow." It's a big market, with many indoor "shops" and many outdoor stands- takes a bit of walking to see it all... much bigger in size than the downtown Durham Farmer's Market, for example. There's a bit of everything there- small electronics (especially car adaptors), cell phones and accessories, household items (ranging from mattress pads to fly swatters), toys, BB guns, cosmetics, incense, and other miscellaneous items. Most of it is stuff you'll pass right by, but still neat to window-shop. LOTS of FOOD, too... tons of vegetables and fruit from multiple vendors, candy/ chocolate, etc. Best of all, it's all very cheap! In addition, it's a great place to go just eat! Many vendors sell burgers/ dogs, but also tacos, pupusas, sliced up fruit (like mango-on-a-stick), fresh-made ice cream, cooked nuts, smoothies, and other interesting drinks (coconut milk, tamarind drink, etc). I had a loroco (vine flower bud from Central America) pupusa, and it was delightful- came with a spicy pickled slaw. Also thoroughly enjoyed the coconut milk as well as some of the chocolates from a vendor inside. Best of all, it was just generally "friendly." I felt like a part of a real community walking around there, as the vendors and shoppers were so nice. My son used some of his allowance to buy a box of "snappers" from one vendor, and the vendor went ahead and gave him a second box for free. Many food vendors gave samples, and didn't then look at you funny if you didn't buy anything, but instead, wished you a nice day. Other shoppers were working-class and very friendly, helping each other out. Too often, we spend our days not noticing others around us as we swiftly sweep through sterile shops. This was a welcome change.

Yelp
The website the vendors "should" get there to set up around 7:00am, and the public is allowed to enter around 8:00am. I arrived around 9:00am and nothing was set-up, most of the stalls were completely empty, there were boxes of food from the food stalls all over and it was chaos. The inside is TINY and fully of junk. It reminded me more of a hoarder's house than a flea market. Skip this one, and head to the Raleigh Fairgrounds Flea Market.

Yelp
Fantastic, unique Mexican food. Filled churros for a buck. I will definitely be back, no matter where it's located. Don't care about non food vendors at all - but they weren't great.

Yelp
I love tacos who doesn't right, well if you want to try something really authentic this is the place that you need to go, i love food and i like to try different type/styles/techniques when comes to food so I will try anything at least once, (if you are picky then this is not a place for you) I think this place is one of the best places where you can have good tacos, i live in Raleigh and when it come to tacos I drive all the way to Durham for tacos, in my personal opinion there are not really good tacos in Raleigh or around Raleigh other then this place, don't get me wrong i eat tacos in Raleigh once in a while if I can't come here but they are not good like this ones. So if you want to have some good tacos, churros, crepés, chicharrones you need to visit this place. For tacos i go to Taqueria Allende , for crepés Mike's Ice Cream, chicharrones I don't know the name but you will see them in the entrance, for churros. If you decide to go let me know what you think.

Yelp
This gem full of Mexican vendors and others is a great place to get Mexican food and Mexican goods. This site along with many others in Durham and across the triangle are facing gentrification. People are moving into Durham because of the diversity And the lower prices, but they don't realize they are driving the diversity out. Support local vendors, the Black flea market, and the Mexican community to help bite the gentrification occurring at a very rapid pace. Please do your part when you buy a flipped home. Was a black or Mexican or other family displaced when you bought that flipped home in Durham, the answer is absolutely yes. At least don't be a NIMBY and support the housing efforts to home the people you are displacing and support the local businesses you are driving out. The amount of time it takes to get housing built in the city is not housing all the people that are being displaced at an alarming pace.

Sheree R.

Yelp
It's nice but small and some of the products sold here are sold at retail value. We had lunch which was good but there isn't a wide variety of things being sold.

Patrick C.

Yelp
Giving this a review mainly to offset the couple kinda racist reviews on here. Yes, if you're coming for a flea market, you'll be disappointed. It's not a good flea market. If you're coming here for some outstanding Mexican food though, you've hit the jackpot! The churros are always hot and fresh, the cold fruit cups topped with lime and chile (don't know the name) are literally the best thing in the world on a hot NC day, and tacos and tortas are all really solid. To clarify a few things said in previous reviews: * I speak very little Spanish and have never, in all the times I've gone, had an issue. Most all the folks who take orders speak English just fine. Could speaking a little Spanish help? Sure! But you can definitely get by without a hitch. Also, everyone is super friendly. * I have no idea where the reviewed found a $12 watermelon, but the produce stands here are top notch and all very inexpensive. Oh yea, there's also a couple produce stands here. I usually go here for lunch and not for groceries, but have gotten produce here before and always been very happy with the quality and price. * If you feel comfortable, health-wise, ordering something from a food truck, you should have no issues here. I've never gotten anything that didn't seem fresh and well prepared.

MR F.

Yelp
Despite all the racist reviews:c I really think this place is amazing even though it has its faults but what doesn't. Heads up If your looking for stuff being sold this is not the right place this place is more for delicious Hispanic food and snacks.

Frank V.

Yelp
If you like flea markets with lots and lots of used household merchandise you're gonna be in for a HUGE disappointment!! We went today and there was about 5 vendors selling used stuff (all crap!). The rest is food and knock off poor quality new merchandise. Very raunchy and unworthy of the $2 parking fee they charge. To boot, it's located in a very sketchy area of Durham. I think I'll stick with the Raleigh State Fairgrounds Flea Market!

Dave L.

Yelp
This is a review for one of the taco trucks at the Green Flea Market in Durham. There are several taco trucks here, but the best taco truck has a huge grill outside with various types of meats. Each taco costs $1.50 and is loaded with a generous amount of whatever meat you choose. The tacos here are so legit! They are as delicious, if not more delicious, than tacos in California. Verdict: the best tacos in North Carolina, hands down!

Yelp
Love this place! I discovered this quite by accident over a year ago when I had a house listed for sale near there. This was before it was discovered by everyone and it wasn't so busy. Now there are security people directing traffic, though I've always found a place to park. I go way out of my way to go here since I drive over from Chapel Hill. I come for the produce, a gordita, fresh squeezed orange juice, and fruit slices with lime juice and chili powder. Plus the atmosphere. The flea market is typical cheap flea market stuff, as far as I can tell. But the food and the friendliness is something else. I have my favorite vendors. Last week I bought a case of oranges for $18 and a flat of avocados for $23, and thought the prices were good. (We fight over avocados in my house.) Sometimes, when I spend a lot, the vendor checking me out will slip in another veg or piece of fruit. You won't see that very many places. The pineapples are better and cheaper than elsewhere. If you are looking for organic, this is not the place to go. As I drive up, I start salivating for the gordita or sopes that are made by hand. The mother of one of the owners stands there making them; I watch mesmerized. They already know that I want the bean only, no meat. Then I load it up with all the condiments out on a table: 3 different salsas, sliced cukes, radishes, cilantro, pico de gallo, and more. It is a community gathering place, you'll hear mostly Spanish, you will definitely feel welcome and want to come back. PS From here, go to Le Ming's to buy Asian food, then you are stocked up for the week.

Yelp
At the green food truck in the back, nearest where they sometimes do a car wash - that burrito is one of the best burritos I have ever had, anywhere, and is consistently amazing. I love the chorizo one especially - and all the fresh toppings you can add, like lime, salsa fresca, onions, cilantro, etc. Well worth the drive! :) As for the market itself - agreed the merch is junk, fruits/veg are sometimes great deals, sometimes pricey. Spices and limes tend to be the best deals, also the car detailing. And I love the big bags of duros, too. :)

Yelp
Taste explosions abound. This flea market is one of my favorite places to go for the unbelievable food. Visit the Green Flea for some amazing, authentico food options (chili mango slices, papusas, pig snout (if you're into that sort of thing), and more). And while you're at it, you can get a cell phone case, some socks, and new shoes on your whip (really!). They probably don't have Gator boots or pimped out Gucci suits, though. From what I've heard of the Mebane flea market, the Green Flea is like a miniature version of that, with more produce, electronics, etc., than old vinyl treasures and such. Still a great time, and great people-watching time can be had, too.

Yelp
I have a blast every time i go. great authentic mexican food. great prices on produce. i can always get grapes and tomatoes at a great price. AND I LOVE THE FRIED PEANUTS. Unbelievable!!! The guys say they are from Virginia and they fry them in peanut oil. They are better than planters to me! I enjoy my time there. I love to support local business and entrepreneurs. They charge a $1 for parking now but i have no problem with that. The parking attendant told me that they are trying to pave the gravel parking lot, so i guess i am ok with that. But there is free parking across the street but it fills up quick. I guess a $1 is not that bad. Great place...i don't have to travel to burlington or raleigh to visit a flea market now.

Yelp
Only giving it one star to review it. This place is disgusting. This is more of a garage sale than a flea market. The bathrooms are nasty. I wouldn't even eat anything there. Looked too sketchy. Do yourself a favor and go to the Raleigh flea market at the fairgrounds.

Yelp
Simply a gem to pass away some time. The flea market is a ting small but it has great finds. Ranging from home goods, clothing, seafood, lots of produces and food booths. We were simply blown away from the cheap produce, churros, real fruit shaved ice and snacks here. I think it's based on a Hispanic community but they are very friendly forks who are more willingly to explain and help.

Valerie H.

Yelp
This place is a must for all people who love authentic Mexican street foods, there is more food stands then merchandise stands, everything is really good, my favorites are the churros and Jalisco style carnitas stand and the tacos de canasta stand, for the tacos de canasta you must get there early b/c he runs out fast and there is always a big line, he is there only on Sundays.

Yelp
DO NOT BUY A PUPPY FROM HERE! Your risking paying good money for a puppy that may look fine and cuddly but within days could be at deaths door with Parvovirus! If your lucky it will only be infested with fleas or multiple intestinal parasites. Go to a rescue organization or shelter they have tons of HEALTHY puppies looking for homes that won't cost you thousands in hospital care.

Tiffany T.

Yelp
If you are looking for only Mexican, overpriced food and a horrible garage sale this is your face. I felt like I was on the strip in Cancun all over again. 10% only speaks English and is hounding you to buy knock off items from the 80s for 4 x the price. I was quoted $12 for a watermelon LOL. Nooo way. It is wayyyy too cluttered and reminded me of a hoarders home. Not worth the time

Yelp
This is one of Durham's best kept secrets for sure. It's close to NCCU and is a bit tucked away so it might be hard to find. This flea market has everything and that is no understatement. If you need something from a phone charger to new shoes, there's bound to be someone that's selling it here. I've even seen puppies and birds being sold. But the best feature of this flea market is the FOOD. It's essentially a Mexican/Salvadoran taco rodeo where multiple stands are selling gorditas, tacos, pupusas, etc etc. There's even a stand that has 5 different meats sizzling on a hot grill in which you can pick and choose the filling of your tacos. It's fantastic. Other things to be on the lookout for are the churros that come with different fillings, fresh sliced mango that's showered with chili powder, and refreshing drinks. Another great feature of this market is the fresh produce that's on sale. It's VERY cheap and I'll definitely be coming during the summer to get a box of 14 champagne mangos for only $5. Yes you read that right. Go go!
