On the Grid : The Durham Hotel

"The Durham Hotel is a mid-century modern hotel with a coffee shop, raw bar and roof deck combo, and lobby-adjacent restaurant. Most come here for the rooftop deck to enjoy the lovely view of the city when it is bustling most weekend nights. Arrive earlier in the evening, or call for a reservation if you want to sit and enjoy some oysters with your bubbly. Though many come for the the roof deck, the lobby-level restaurant boasts delicious eats from James Beard award-winning chef Andrea Reusing. Pro-tip: stop in for a coffee; they have one of the best coffee bars in town. If you’re looking to enjoy the Durham without indulging in food or drink, check out their website to see when the next roof deck yoga class is happening." - WillowTree Durham

Best Rooftop Bars in the Triangle | Eater Carolinas

"The drinks flow at this downtown Durham rooftop, but so do the vinyasas on Saturday and Sunday mornings during weekly yoga sessions. On Sundays, stick around for the “build your own” spritz station and fresh oysters. The nachos piled high with local chorizo are a nice counterbalance to the sun salutations." - Elliott Harrell

This hotel has a lot of positive attributes. Cleanliness is most important for us, and we weren’t disappointed! The hotel promotes local products. The snacks for purchase in the room are from Durham companies. They deliver fresh ground local coffee or tea to your room in the mornings. They also offer more coffee downstairs for those who need an additional cup. The hotel’s location is very walkable to shops and restaurants. It does not have on-site parking, but there is a public parking garage very close by. All of the staff we met were very courteous and professional. We would definitely stay here again!!

The rooms at the Durham Hotel are modern and sleek. The bathrobes are so comfy, and having room service and a fantastic breakfast each morning for a week was a huge bonus. I tried something new on the breakfast menu each day! I highly recommend this property for anyone visiting Durham, NC. It's centrally located and walkable to some of the best restaurants, including its rooftop with amazing city views.

Critiques: there was a pizza box in the fridge when we checked in. Our view was of a sky light (legit couldn’t see the sky unless you looked up with your face against the window). Rags from house keeping were left in our room. Glows: Try every and all F&B options. Drinks on roof are super reasonable and obviously a great view. Coffee and brunch in the lobby was amazing, both food and drinks. The coffee for the room schtick was fine. Location was perfect! If it’s your jam try the yoga on the roof, was a nice little add on to end the stay.

Very comfortable stay with excellent staff. The location is ideal if you want to explore the delights of Downtown Durham. And parking is amply available at nearby garages. Breakfast was delicious and had good local baked goods.

Love the retro vibe here. Clean rooms with good amount of in room amenities. Roof top bar and restaurant has amazing views of the sunset. Food options are plenty. We have hosted 2 happy hours here. Easy to work with staff to design the menu you want.

The main room was very roomy and modern. The bathroom was spa-like, complete with robes. Lots of opportunities to get together for entertainment and great food. For instance, there was a wonderful jazz band whose music was loud, yet awesome.

My wife and I love this hotel! The staff is amazingggg. The food and drinks are delicious ! The rooms are spacious and comfortable. This is our top choice when staying in Durham!

Excellent roof top bar to watch the sunset. Interesting to see the ever changing skyline of Durham due to all the elite investors building sky rises and gentrifying the neighborhoods. But the drinks were good and the bartender quick to serve.

Yelp
My recent stay at the Durham was a pleasant one! Located in the heart of Durham, this hotel sets you back in the 60s era. The storefront with high pillars connects to the small lobby, which opens up to a full service restaurant. The rooftop is a great sweeping view of the small town skyline and a perfect setting for a beautiful sunset. Libations crafted in this hotel are all made from local ingredients and vendors. The sleeping quarters offer spacious resting serenity equipped with comfortable beds, crisp linens, and technology for daily use. Wifi is available, and there are no USB connections on the hardware in the rooms. The staff I encountered during my stay were fabulous, from the team at the rooftop restaurant and bar to the in-house hospitality service (fresh towels and clean linens daily, room service is tidy) and daily interaction with the front desk and concierge, their welcoming was warm. Valet is no longer available, but a parking garage is located offsite and only a few steps away. Weekend parking is free, and the street parking is also an option, although limited around the vicinity. Stop by the first-floor coffee bar for your morning locally sourced brew and breakfast pastry! I did knock off a star specifically for the space in the 1st floor restaurant. While the era and vibe are appreciated, I hope Management will visit the condition of the furniture and work on replacement and upkeep. The seats are weathered leather and dated, it needs to be cleaned and conditioned. The stains are immensely off-putting. I enjoyed my stay and will definitely keep The Durham as an option when in the area, especially if alternative AirBnBs are limited.

Yelp
Pretty good service on an incredibly busy and high traffic afternoon for brunch. Wait staff was attentive and checked on us often even with kitchen and bar delays due to the business of the restaurant. Management was helpful and supported staff. Food was very good with generous portions and had a nice presentation. Pretty good experience overall and would most definitely return though likely at a different time of day while other activities are not ongoing so we don't experience such significant delays.

Yelp
This review is strictly for their lobby restaurant. First off the space is beautiful and I find it to be so impressive everytime I see it. I'm a sucker for MCM architecture and design and the Durham Hotel does not disappoint. I think their restaurant is a great spot to grab a tasty dinner before a DPAC show (since they aren't crazy crowded and the service is fast) or grab a coffee if you are looking for a spot to work for a few during the day. I recently went in for an early dinner and the service was great. I tried their farm salad, their trout, and chicken. The trout was more like a salmon, it must have been the type of trout it was. It was really tasty and presented beautifully. The chicken was also spot on. I usually don't order chicken while I'm at restaurants but theirs was super flavorful and delicious. The salad was just okay to me, idk it didn't taste as lovely as the description sounded. Their wine and cocktail list was great and overall it was a lovely spot to spend some time at!

Yelp
Top notch customer service, Ely went out of his way to help me print notes for my presentation and scored a "sweet treat" for me when everything was closed in the area. The front desk attendant was super kind to me and my colleagues while they were transitioning to a new computer system. The coffee was spot on and thank goodness it was FREE! And the freshly ground coffee at your door each morning - PRICELESS! Definitely a hidden jewel and sets standards for what hotel stays should be!

Yelp
My company has a corporate account with The Durham. I had to book a last minute trip to Durham, and when I called to book a room, all of the rooms were reserved. Rather than turning me away, Elijah gave me a double upgrade to a deluxe suite without additional charges. What great customer service! Upon my arrival, I was warmly greeted and within a matter of minutes got the keys to my room. The room was spacious and very nice. Outside of my room window, I could see downtown Durham and the Duke Clinical Research Institute. The hotel room is conveniently located within walking distance to many fine restaurants. My office was also only 4 minutes away by foot. On the 6th floor is the rooftop bar. Definitely check this out if you're in the area! The staff at this hotel were all very friendly and professional. I enjoyed my stay and look forward to a future visit.

Yelp
Talk about a rip off! My wife and I went on to the rooftop bar for drinks and live music. The drinks are way overpriced and we were charged twice on our open tab. Better watch your receipt! Service was stupid slow. Never again! There's way too many other great places in Durham. Not sure how they stay in business.

Yelp
A truly terrible hospitality experience. I valet parked my vehicle at the Durham on Saturday night. 2 hours into my stay, they interrupted an event I was hosting to inform me that an unknown person side-swiped my vehicle and knocked off my sideview mirror. I was told that there are no cameras in their valet area and that they have no idea who was responsible for the damage. Accidents happen, but the response has been remarkably inhospitable. I Ubered home that evening and requested that my vehicle not be moved while the mirror was still hanging from its wires. I did not want any further damage to my car. There was no attempt to pay for the Uber ride, and when I arrived the next day, I was informed that they had moved my car to another parking deck. When asked why they moved it, the General Manager blamed their evening manager for not having relayed the information. Today, I spoke with a member of their management company. The woman on the phone was unprofessional, combative and had no desire to listen to anything I had to say. It is unsurprising that issues like this occur with such poor upper management. 1. Do something about your valet parking situation. When guests pay you to park a vehicle, it should be parked AWAY from the general public. And if you can't manage that, you need cameras. 2. Train your management team better. Their flippant attitudes and willingness to shirk responsibility by blaming other team members are embarrassing and unprofessional. Accidents happen. It's how you respond that makes great businesses. There are far too many great hotels in this area for an establishment like The Durham to conduct itself this way. Do not recommend it. I've been a fan since it opened, but I will not be returning until the property is under new ownership.

Yelp
Great check in process provided by super front desk staff. Excellent amenities in a thoroughly enjoyable, renovated & reimagined nicely updated hotel. Comfortable, quiet, and most importantly clean room with good bedding and cozy bed. Valet filled up fast on a sat night with a bustling roof top restaurant but we were well taken care of. Excellent coffee shop in the lobby and great fresh grounds delivered to the door for in room brewing. Prompt courteous valet.

Yelp
If it's a baseball game, you can see fireworks from ur room as the rooftop! This hotel is so cute and the staff is just amazing! Seriously, everyone I came in contact with was extremely helpful! The rooms are retro and the windows make it so open and bright. However there are room darkening curtains so if you want to sleep late or mid afternoon nap... it's possible. The restaurant has some pretty cool entrees. The veggie rice...yum!! I am a cream brûlée kind of sore and the only reason I gave this review 4.5 stars instead of five is because they don't have regular yellow mustard & the maple crème brûlée with bacon was way too sweet. Like diabetes, running through my veins, sweet.lol! however, they more than make up for it with the chocolate chip cookie with a crested sea salt on the top. Oh my goodness.!! This boutique hotel is great! Oh, I almost forgot the rooftop is a gem!! Don't miss a moment here!!

Yelp
This from the perspective of a hotel guest. I've stayed @ the Durham Hotel twice and it's been a great experience. It's boutique hotel, never a long wait to check in or out. The staff is always friendly and helpful. I didn't bring a car, but valet is available and there is a parking structure around the corner if you want to park a car and don't want to valet. The goods: -Clean rooms -New hotel, new furniture and new decor -Everything local. From coffee served in the room, toiletries, and complimentary gift. Once I got Burt's Bees chapstick and the second time it was hand lotion. Who knew Burt's Bees was from Durham. All snacks for purchase are local too! -coffee is fresh every morning. Find your order sheet in your room. Place it on your door by the cut off. Wake up to a tray of coffee and your milk, or tea ready for you the next morning. My only gripe is that if you forget to order coffee, you won't have any available in your room. Just a coffee pot. You can get coffee that's available in the lobby every morning or order from the restaurant downstairs. -Durham restaurant is legit. The food is very fresh and delicious. My room came with a voucher for breakfast and a drink of my choice. No limit in cost. I ordered something new everyday and a cappuccino. Such a nice convenience to walk downstairs and have breakfast each morning. -Location in downtown Durham. Walking distance to the bodega (small market where you can buy water, drinks, snacks and food) along with local restaurants and small businesses. You could walk to the DPAC too if you wanted. -Rooftop bar is beautiful with beautiful views. In the wintertime they put down the covers to enclose it a little bit. Not a lot of food, just snacks on their menu and all drinks. Events are often hosted here, so depending on the day there could be a private event in a big section of the rooftop. Not so goods: -Located next door to King Fisher and Queenys bars. Depending what room you are in, possibly if you're on the second floor you could hear music from their venue until late at night. -There is only 1 elevator for the hotel and when the rooftop bar is popping it can take a while to catch the elevator to your room. Comfortable stay overall.

Yelp
We had my sister's birthday brunch there this morning and it was wonderful! Peacock met us outside and helped my sister in [she is in a wheelchair]. The hostess was welcoming, and our server, Mars, was a true delight. The Bellinis were yummy and all of the food was delicious! The portions were large and the plating was beautiful and the taste was on pointe for everything. We ordered bananas foster pancakes, stuff French toast, and breakfast fried rice. Thank you, Durham Hotel Restaurant!

Yelp
I decided on a staycation at The Durham Hotel to start out Memorial Day Weekend. I arrived and decided to leave my car out front at the valet area because no one came out after 5 minutes, but the front desk took my keys at check in and handled it perfectly. Bree greeted me with so much energy, I couldn't help but be excited. The check in was great and Bree was amazing!! My suite was great!! Very spacious, very clean and so comfortable!! I had a corner suite and there were ceiling to floor windows along the entire wall. Flat screen TVs in the living room and bedroom The bathroom was perfect, I absolutely loved the large shower and the amenities in the bathroom. No one ever provides a full bottle of lotion, let alone good lotion!! It's a big deal. The bedroom was very spacious. And comfortable. The staff was amazing, every time I called the front desk or stopped by. I went to the rooftop to enjoy drinks and the ambiance. The bar tenders were great and were able to make what I liked. I can't wait to go back again!! Great hospitality!

Yelp
This review is for the rooftop bar only. Or, in this case, for the rooftop bar that is the posterchild for how not to design a rooftop bar. As a San Diegan, I have been to A LOT of rooftop bars. Back home they're about as hard to find as a drive-thru taco shop ending in -bertos. The number one priority with a rooftop bar is to make the most of the view. After all, what's the point of us being up there to begin with? It was a cold November night in Durham, so there really was no other reason to be on top of a building, but instead of highlighting the mid-rise downtown vista, The Durham hides it with low tables and low seating surrounded by fake hedges obscuring the view, no outwards-facing rails to belly up to nor sit at, and only a few standing tables in a side area that seemed to provide the only real view point but was glossly underutilized. What's the point of having a view and then hiding it from the world? Major design and concept flaw. Adding to the disappointment was the food and drink. We ordered the signature The Durham drink, which was just simply not good. My friend's Fools Gold was about the same. Our guacamole was fine, but the chips were oddly thick, and our mezze board was underwhelming. On top of it all, ordering at the bar was not easy, as you can tell that many people were having to wait an awfully long time to get a drink order in. The only upside to the place was the scene, which really was quite sceney and made for some damn good people watching. I guess if that's your main priority, then The Durham might be your kind of spot, but I think it best to get your food and drink elsewhere.

Yelp
Went for an early dinner to avoid the night time hassle. The "dining area" is essentially the hotel lobby, which feels extremely intrusive and odd. The staff was friendly, but not overly attentive. My wife quite liked "The Durham" cocktail. The cheese board was something a high schooler would put together for a first date. Nothing sweet to balance against the cheese, which all seemed to be a variation of the same medium hard cow's cheese. This all wouldn't be a problem if the prices weren't in line with fine dining establishments. Steak prices for a hamburger experience.

Yelp
This was a nice hotel to stay at and is in a central location in downtown Durham. The front desk was friendly and helpful though they closed early which I'm not used to seeing at hotels. They had free coffee in a cart in the lobby during the mornings. The room was pretty spacious though I didn't exactly have a proper window or view. In the room, instead of having coffee you can request freshly ground coffee delivered to your room in the morning. I thought it was a nice idea though they didn't have pens in the room to fill out the order form which was an oversight. I stayed here for 2 nights and there was no turndown service either night.

Yelp
How have I not stayed in this hotel before now? Oh my WOW, my stay here has got to be THE best hotel stay I've ever had. Not kidding. And I spend a lot of nights traveling for work in all kinds of hotels and lodgings across the country. First of all, the local color and flavor of Durham is in every fiber of this place. Literally. The cover on the bed is made from NC-made denim! A nod to the area's textile past; the personalized coffee service in the morning from freshly ground Counter Culture Coffee?! WHAT?! I thought places that have a pillow menu were great, but that has nothing on this place; there was even a tin of Burt's Bees hand salve on the bedside table! I slept like a newborn baby in that bed. Where I lad my head is exactly how I found myself the next morning. Whatever the secret to that bed is, I want it in my house. When I arrived, I valeted my car (which was a breeze), check-in was simple and every staff member was over-the-top courteous and genuinely seemed glad to see me. I know the fake hospitality face and smile very well and I saw it, but they took such care of me, I did not care one bit. I did not eat at the restaurant and I was not able to visit the rooftop bar due to a private event to which I was not invited (how dare they!) but I'm looking forward to coming back again.

Elena A.

Yelp
Breakfast just ok. We did not stay at the hotel, but came in for breakfast after reading great Ggle reviews. $50 for 3 ppl. The coffee was not good. The mug it was served in was all scratched up.. to the point it should have been removed from service. The food was presented nicely but was just ok - it did not live up to the hype of other reviews imo. Overall, it's probably hit or miss.

Yelp
Sunday brunch at the Durham Hotel Restaurant was full of different combinations and robust flavors! The Bellini's were amazing and the biscuits with the fruit jam was delightful! Their lamb link sausage was so good and seasoned perfectly! I was so happy I went with a group because we all got something different and allowed each other to sample dishes. I will be returning as there are a few things I have yet to try! There was a couple of hiccups, but I would still return. The service got slow at times, but I'm sure it was because they were short staffed as that is a common problem in restaurants now. Also they forgot my meal. Everyone had their meal and I was still waiting. Once it was brought to their attention, they took a while and brought it out. Everything was fresh and hot! They also compensated for the mistake. Prices: Prices are $10-20 but you get nice portions. It becomes pricey when you add additional items like side of bacon or grits.. Parking: There is a parking deck across from the restaurant and it's free on the weekend. There is also parking along the street if you're lucky enough to snag one. Environment: I went for Sunday brunch and it was nice, clean and beautifully decorated for the holiday. A casual dress and family friendly atmosphere is what I observed at this particular time of day. Staff: All staff was attentive and friendly.

Yelp
This is a really nice hotel in downtown Durham. It is walking distance to everything, which is super convenient. They also have a beautiful rooftop with a great view. They have fresh complimentary coffee downstairs in the morning. One complaint is that they didn't clean our room in the morning. We didn't have any "do not disturb" sign, so we don't know why they missed cleaning up our space. We had to ask the front desk for more clean towels. Additionally, our hotel room on the second floor was through a weird little doorway where is almost felt like we were shoved off to the side in a closet. Everything else was fine. The front desk staff is so kind and helpful! I was shocked by the high cost put on my credit card at check in, but it turns out they do a $100 per night additional hold on your card in case of damages, so you end up getting that money back. I recommend skipping the valet and parking in the public lot across the street to save some money.

Yelp
We've dined here several times over the years and had both good and so-so experiences (the so-so one when they were offering an extremely limited menu). Founding Chef Andrea Reusing and the restaurant parted ways amicably, so I'm not sure who the executive chef is now. We recently came for Sunday dinner before a show at DPAC. At first we were only one of 2-3 parties there but the dining room filled up as the evening went on. All I can say is we really enjoyed everything, from the seared scallops appetizer to our entrees (red snapper and tune) to our desserts (pumpkin creme brule and red wine sorbet). My wife absolutely loved the prosecco she ordered and even took a photo of the bottle to remember it. Luckily, I recently won a gift certificate, so we will be back -- maybe to try brunch.

Yelp
Good drinks and occasional live music. Rooftop views are a vibe. Best views in Durham

Yelp
It's a local favorite. Rooftop bar. First floor restaurant. Gym. Supports local artists. Valet parking. Great location. Rooms are ALWAYS clean.

Yelp
I decided to do brunch for New Year's Day at the Durham Hotel. In the past I have been to this restaurant and had outstanding dinners. This brunch was a dreadful disappointment! The pastry tray had obviously been baked the day before or was store bought. Our entrees were quite underwhelming and did not seem freshly prepared. It took forever to get coffee. Service was just okay. A sad way to start the new year.

Samuel L.

Yelp
Drinks are pricey but good. Rooftop is one of the best views and vibes in Durham. When they have live jazz, the Durham Hotel simply can't be beat.

Yelp
Writing this review for the rooftop bar, which is one of my most favorite spots in Durham! If you're a rooftop bar kinda person then this is THE place to get your needs met in the Bull City! The views of downtown are stunning and the bar offers an extensive beer, wine, cocktail, and appetizer menu perfect to compliment the stunning views! The ONLY reason I'm not giving this a 5 star is due to the consistent long wait times that I have experienced whenever coming here. The bar space is rather small not allowing for enough bartenders for the venue, in my opinion, and so expect to wait quite a while to be able to order your beverages! However, once you have that beverage in hand and looking at that view, you'll be just fine!

Yelp
Beautiful location that seems to be poorly managed or not managed at all. Overall seems extremely short staffed. Before we even got there, we were contacted a week before stating that the hotel restaurant would be closed the day of our reservation/check in, no explanation given. Ok figured there was maybe a staff shortage or private party. Once we checked in that night I saw a ton of staff milling around by the coffee bar (one of whom rudely asked me what I was looking for as I walked into the restaurant space that was empty). There was no party but seemed to have plenty of staff to sit around the bar area and talk. Checking in and the guy was very odd. Second floor carpet was filthy and stained and there was a bunch of random furniture stacked everywhere as if they were using the hall for storage. Room was sparse with exactly one picture on the wall, one towel per person. Folks on the patio were very loud at night. Elevator extremely slow. Checking out: we waited 20 mins for the only bellhop to come back from getting someone a coffee. Not that we were trying to get to the airport or anything...the girl at the front desk was extremely nice and apologetic and explained that he was the only one on duty. She was lovely and checked on us multiple times and the bellhop was also extremely apologetic. Management needs to staff this place much better and clean the carpet. I was so excited to stay here but unfortunately we will not be back. When we first arrived I even planned on purchasing the Miir travel tumbler from the room, but I ultimately did not since I do not want to remember my stay.

Yelp
For what they charge, this should be better. Rooms are very plain. Our phone didn't work and was never repaired. They talk about complimentary coffee being brought to your room in the morning, but its just the ground coffee, you need to prepare it yourself. Also, there is only one elevator--this is not just for hotel guests but also for patrons of the very busy rooftop bar. Staff was nice and the hotel is clean, they just need to work on some things.

Kaylee M.

Yelp
Extremely disappointed. Had a mediocre brunch and then was just charged for the brunch TWO MONTHS after I had visited causing issues with my card. No warning was given that their system wasn't working or that I would randomly see an $80 charge for brunch several weeks later. Cannot be more irritated

Yelp
The food was overpriced and slightly weird. Go for the view and maybe a drink. Enjoy the ambiance...a nice nod to the vintage building and quaint Durham vibe.

Yelp
**The rooftop only*** About 5 of us got there and we were told to grab ANY table, that it was first come first serve so we did. We ordered food and drinks and half way through the middle of our delightful evening, the hostess told us that our table was reserved and we had to clear out. I was like WHAT? After arguing with her and explaining that we were told it was was first come first serve she vanished and Matron Mama Martin came in with her Orange is the new black attitude telling us we had to clear out no matter what we were told. I am NEVER setting foot in this swampy, nasty place, where they treat clients like this. Only uneducated, inexperienced management would allow this.

Yelp
3.5/5 Strengths - The experience and service were incredible! Our servers struck a perfect balance between attentiveness and non-intrusiveness. Our waiter was also very knowledgeable about the menu. Opportunities - The food is a little expensive for what we were receiving, but I guess we're paying for the experience. Each dish was almost breathtaking, but a few elements in each were underwhelming and took away from the final effect. Appetizers - * Pork belly was good, but could have added a little more spice. * Scallops were a little overcooked and on the bland side - I wish they were able to soak in more flavor. The sauce had a lot of promise, but the sweetness was overwhelming. I think it needed to be salted more during the cooking process, and needed some more brightness from a citrus. Main dishes - * Red drum was the highlight! Perfect cook and tenderness. However, the shrimp in the dish was nothing to write home about. It tasted almost of frozen shrimp, salted a little bit, and just sauteed; it tasted like a separate dish entirely, rather than a garnish. For a protein that could soak up the flavor surrounding it so easily, I wish it had more resemblance of the sauce. * Quail - Glaze was delicious; the wild rice pilaf was delightful; but the quail had some catching up to do. Quail is definitely an ambitious and unforgiving protein. The dark meat was tender and juicy, but the white meat was dry and almost rubbery. Half a small chicken or a whole cornish hen might be better suited and more forgiving, offered as a dish to split between two diners. Dessert - * Peach pie - I loved the lightness of the ricotta and bourbon ice cream, and the restaurant would do well to offer a palate cleanser beforehand. Overall, the menu is very appealing and the restaurant is deserving of its 3.5 stars on Yelp. A few tweaks here and there could push it to the 4+ star range.

Yelp
Our stay at this relatively new, downtown boutique hotel was most interesting, mostly good, but a bump or two. The hotel, which has 53 rooms, opened a couple of years ago in a renovated bank building dating to the 1950's. It is near the heart of the almost completely revitalized center of downtown Durham, and its multitude of amazing restaurants. And we chose it because it was boutique (people like saying boutique almost as much as they like saying salsa), and because it was within walking distance of our chosen dinner spot, Mateo, the subject of a separate review! If you are using the valet parking (and I'll highly recommend you spend the $14), you simply pull up in front of the hotel, and they'll take it from there. TIP: if the spots in front of the hotel are full, there are several parking slots on the other side of the street, and some are usually open, and the hotel staff will make it work. We were quickly checked in, and escorted to our room on the 6th floor, the only room on the 6th floor, #601. The rest of the 6th floor is devoted to the Rooftop, a bar and a music venue, supposedly a late night hot spot - wasn't sure how that was gonna work out - we're seasoned citizens but we still hear out of one ear a bit! The room was very attractive, a plethora of large windows providing a river of sunlight, there was a small balcony, and a beautiful bathroom, with a shower head made to conduct business! The furnishings in the living area was designed by an extreme minimalist, who was short, I'd guess. There was no ice bucket, no ice machine on the floor - there was a small coffee machine, but no coffee, rather awkward on both accounts! After returning from our evening meal, we settled in for the night. Went to the Rooftop and ask for a glass of ice, which they happily supplied. A bit of noise bled over from the Rooftop but only occasionally, and even them not loudly, and we spent the night comfortably. There is a complimentary continental breakfast, but the items we had were dry and not very tasty. The wifi here is the quickest we've seen in a hotel, and that was certainly nice. The staff here was excellent, friendly and very efficient. We'll almost certainly stay here again because we really want to try Mother and Sons Trattoria, which is within easy walking distance.

Yelp
This review is for the hotel services. I booked a room here for a weekend to visit friends. I used to live in Durham and coming home and experiencing the new and improved Durham at the Durham Hotel was fitting! I had a late check in (1 am) and staff were very prepared for my arrival. My key card and paperwork had been prepared in advance. My room was clean and had many inviting touches including: - local chocolates on my pillow - Burt's bees chapstick - Fiji water - snacks for $ that weren't just junk food They even give you the option of freshly ground coffee delivered to your door at the morning hour of your choice. Breakfast is included too, two bfast item choices that were actually quite tasty. Not to mention you can't beat the location. I walked all through downtown Durham discovering all the new eateries, gift stores, etc. The housekeeping also does a great job and cleaning up my mess and replenishing the toiletries. Highly recommend this hotel for when you're coming from out of town!

Yelp
I'm pretty much just coming here for the coffee sodas at their coffee bar. I haven't stayed at the Durham hotel being a local, but their coffee soda available at the coffee bar downstairs or upstairs at the bar is choice. It's truly one of my favorite things in downtown to order and then walking around the city while sipping on. It's a perfect combination of soda and coffee. You get a mix of the sweet and bitter and that perfect small crushed ice to round things out. It's truly a perfect beverage. My only complaint is i'd love to order a larger size, but there's only one size. It's kind of the best all around mix of coffee and soda. Trust me, this is worth stopping in and ordering if you're close by. I tell everyone to order it and they all come away loving it.

Yelp
Just went back here and was more impressed! It is still a little bit like a restaurant in a hotel lobby -- and ironically the building originally was neither of those things. But the food was a lot better and more as described. Good cocktail. Salads and soup were nice. And the entrée pork chop was quite lovely! Although it could have been trimmed a little better, it was nicely charred and still tender and nice to eat. The waiter warned me it is served sort-of à-la-carte and I'm glad he did, because I got some of the charred broccoli (apparently again after my last time there) and another of us got the Bussel(s) Sprouts. Man oh man, those were the stars! The charred broccoli is wonderful. Not burned, but lovely a little bit crispy at the ends with a charred flavor. And the sprouts were mostly the trappings around a sprout, but the saucing on it was really rich and reminiscent of something I still can't put my finger on, but I enjoyed it too. The menu is short but I think shows off a good kitchen.

Yelp
I really enjoyed my brunch here! Despite the fact that we were here at 1pm on a Sunday, prime brunch time, and The Durham is very hip and popular right now, it was very quiet. I loved it! The carpet and cozy booths make it comfortable and quiet- easy to enjoy the company of your dining companion. We parked in one of the many public lots that are around- lucky for us it was Sunday, so we didn't have to pay. The service is always friendly at The Durham, whether you're popping in to look at the view from the rooftop, or settling in for a meal. Our server was friendly, helpful, and quick. I got a coffee soda (the best thing ever!!!) to enjoy at the table. My husband got one at the end of the meal, to-go, and that was handled smoothly, as well. We split the banana bread to start, which was delicious and decadent and just the right size. For my main, I got the "Todo Bien," which was bakes eggs with chilies, beans, and the most delicious sauce ever (tasted like enchilada sauce and cream, maybe?). It was served with corn tortillas, thoughtfully wrapped in a cloth to keep them warm. It was a day with a little chill in the air, so I thoroughly enjoyed the cozy, hearty breakfast. I might order something lighter in the summer, but for cooler days it was perfect! My husband got the "Hangtown Fry", which is fried NC oysters, soft-scrambled eggs, bacon, hot sauce butter and toast. While it was tasty, the portion was a bit smaller than we'd hoped- we probably wouldn't order this in the future- there were literally only 3 oysters on the whole thing, and no strips of bacon, just bits of bacon. The server brought over an extra order of scrambled eggs. We were grateful, because my husband was still sort of hungry after his tiny meal, but we were also confused. Was this just to be nice? Or was it made by accident, and they were nearing the end of the brunch window and didn't want food to go to waste? Or was something missing from my husband's meal originally and this was attempting to make up for it? Definitely not complaining about extra eggs, but a little baffled. In general, I think everyone would enjoy brunch here. Folks who prefer a quiet and comfortable ambiance would love it, folks who want a hip and trendy meal would enjoy it, and people who love food would be pleased. Lots of alcohol options for brunch, too! I couldn't help but compare this meal to The Lakewood's brunch, as both are relatively new places with similar price points. I left The Lakewood feeling ripped off and still hungry, disappointed in the service and noisy ambiance. I left The Durham feeling satisfied, comfortable and happy- I kind of wanted to hang out all day, to be honest. I will definitely be back!

Yelp
We decided to have a drink and a snack ....after a show recently... while in Durham. The Durham Hotel Rooftop had been mentioned to us as a nice place to stop .... consequently, we thought we would give it a go. As I entered the building via the main lobby, I could not help but think that this might be an interesting and in certain respects somewhat edgy / chic place to stay next-time while visiting North Carolina. Very nice decor, glassy and comfortably modern. The open, restaurant / bar area on the top of the roof (of the Durham Hotel) was very tranquil. Good views, spacious and a variety of conversation pits and table seating options were available. Service was just OK. Not remarkable and (actually) a little slow for no more patrons than they had at the time of our visit. Their wine selection was adequate and we found suitable whites and reds that met our needs / desires. The snacks were very yummy. We ordered oysters on the half shell and picnic eggs with smoked fish / trout roe. Tasty and just enough, not too much. We had a super time just picking at the food, drinking the wine and enjoying the view. A place you may want to check out for business or pleasure (or maybe, both).

Yelp
Since moving to the area I kept hearing how I needed to try this rooftop bar out. Sooo, I ventured out on a nice Saturday when the weather was gorgeous thinking it would be great. Eh...not quite. I was pretty underwhelmed by the whole experience. Although I know the rooftop is supposed to be THE best feature, I still expected the lobby/main level to be attractive. It was decorated ok but I still was expecting more. The hotel itself is pretty old which was indicative in the long elevator wait and ride upstairs. I felt like I entered the Bates Motel during the rickety ride. I just knew the lights were going to flicker and that would be it for us. When we finally reached the top floor, it was pretty crowded which was a good sign to me - people wanted to be there. However, I was quickly confused by the varied demographics. Now I love everyone but I thought this place would have more of an identity which it seemed to lack. Then again, that's been my experience at a few places here soooo, I digress. The view was lovely but there weren't any "outside" seats available so we sat at the bar. The pisco sour inspired drink I had was good but waaaaay overpriced. I get that it's a hotel bar, downtown, AND on a rooftop but I didn't think it was worth it. Unless something major is happening here or someone I love is hosting an event, I won't be in a rush to return.

Yelp
We stayed here last month, but did not get a chance to try the restaurant for dinner. This week we stayed at 21c (also amazing accommodations) because The Durham was booked, but we had dinner in the downstairs restaurant one night. LET ME TELL YOU- nothing disappoints! We had tix to a Bulls game so just order apps and drinks. I'll break it down: The Green Room: I have recently enjoyed gin drinks that are made well, and this was one of them! Tart without being too sweet and very refreshing! Tomato Soup: this was a chilled gazpacho style soup featuring chopped fresh tomatoes, hard boiled egg, and fresh dill. So perfect on a hot afternoon after our 2 flights- but would be equally as delicious on a fall day! Picnic eggs: perfect yolk mouse and extremely tasty! They were garnished with some smoked fish and caviar that my husband LOVED. Beef Tartare: preparation was BEAUTIFUL! It's grass fed beef- so it's BEEFY and you get that full flavor. I was worried about the raw onions being overpowering, but it all worked beautifully together. I added a little extra black pepper and it was fantastic. Durham Oysters: I did not try these are they were a little large and I prefer them smaller (it's the season, I'm not complaining) but my husband said they were delicious! Briny and garnished with creme fraiche and caviar. Ciabatta with black butter: DON'T. MISS. THIS. The bread is perfectly chewy and crusty and WOW that butter! It's charcoal infused so be prepared to brush your teeth- but you don't want to pass this up! The cheese balls: I forgot the name on the menu, but YOU WANT THESE!!! And you want to take some to go when you are watching TV in your hotel later that night! The cheese is a NC made and similar to a Gruyere and then fried in the lightest dough ball (about the size of a hush puppy) and garnished with grated Parmesan or pecorino.

Yelp
*This review is for the rooftop bar only* I had a lot of fun hanging out at this bar after dinner on a Saturday night. It's definitely more of a chill vibe than a pseudo-club vibe like some other rooftop bars. They have plenty of comfy seating (both covered and open-air), and there are also dining tables so you can order food up there if you want. There are lots of creative cocktails so we had drinks and apps and everything was really good. I loved the view and even though a light rain started, we stayed along with plenty of other people because the majority of the area is covered and they also have an indoor rooftoop bar as well. I will definitely return to this bar next time I have dinner in downtown Durham!

Yelp
This review is purely for brunch. I've never been here for dinner but BRUNCH. The cinnamon bun is amazing. I know, how good can a cinnamon bun at a restaurant but it's great. Truly. They change the menu quite a bit but always have fun twists on classics. I recall the biscuits and gravy, breakfast fried rice, and shrimp and grits all being delicious. I've especially been here a lot during Covid because it's spacious and tables are spread out and it's typically not packed. The service is sometimes slower and they give you these tiny glasses for water - but if you're not a water fiend like me, you'll prob be fine ;)

Yelp
Such a nice escape. I visited the roof at the Durham hotel during a Sunday afternoon and it was so breezy and full of good vibes. I ordered the Durham and Hitman - both drinks full of flavor and liquor! The guac was delicious and the house made chips were good too; slightly salty and missing a dip..ranch maybe? The DJ was playing some 90s pop but then switched upon request and added some 90s r&b as well, and the atmosphere was even better. The service was ok, nothing noteworthy, but that's all right because I have no complaints. Worth a visit if you're looking for a casual rooftop experience.

Yelp
This review is for the restaurant at the Durham hotel, and I could not find a separate listing for it. It's a nice restaurant, a perfect place for a date night. We went and didn't really want a huge meal, we decided just to order the burger. A lot of times when I order a burger at a fancy restaurant it's an amazing burger, that wasn't the case here. In fact the burger was very disappointing! It had very little flavor, I assume they use a low-fat brown beef which is a mistake for making a tasty burger! They also put no sauce at all on it, not even any mayo! We had to ask for Mayo and they brought out a garlic flavored mayonnaise which gave the burger some flavor. The fries were really good at least. I looked at some of the other meals people were getting and they looked stunning, so I hate to rank this place poorly just based off of our experience. I would definitely like to go back and try one of their other dishes.

Yelp
This place was superb! The waiter was literally the best waiter I have had in many many years. Best in Raleigh by far. I had the baked oysters, and my man had the the NC trout. We also had a side of beef fat fries and corn on the cob. Everything was fantastic! Really well done. Worth the price. Our order looked so good, the people around us asked about our dishes. Dessert was an expresso for him and a pot o chocolate to share. Dessert was ok, a little boring. This place was amazing. I would highly recommend this to all my friends. I had a Gertwurtaminer blend which I loved. If I could give more stars I would!

Yelp
The restaurant's food is inconsistent and leaves much to be desired. The service friendly but not good at all. I know, how does that even happen. Waited a long time for car because no one was sent to get it, then finally one of the front desk folks went to look for it. Hotel was nice but housekeeping was rude. It's sad because there's so much unrealized opportunity for greatness here. ‍

Yelp
I checked it out for restuarant week and really liked it! It was a little fancier than my usual lunch time spots, but the food and service were greasy. The prices outside restuarant week seemed very reasonable, so I plan to return sometime!
