15 Portland Biscuits That Would Make Any Southerner Proud | Eater Portland

"The Egg Carton stands out in the popular Carts on Foster food cart pod due to its bright turquoise exterior and stellar biscuits. You can substitute biscuits for bread in any one of their excellent breakfast sandwiches, or, opt for its popular biscuits and gravy plate (which is only available during the weekend — just be sure to get there early before it sells out)." - Michelle Lopez

I'm so excited these guys are back. Incredible food and wonderful people. My go to is the eggs benedict and my second choice is the biscuits and gravy. Hands down the best biscuits!

Kyle Hanson

Google
Ridiculously good food. Love the sandwiches and home-made dessert treats. Can't wait to try out the biscuits and gravy. EDIT: Tried the biscuits and gravy and it's fantastic.

David Hobbs

Google
Rarely can I not find deficiency with restaurants. This place is top notch. The biscuit is perfect and I am from the south where they know biscuits. The jelly is amazing. Like they know what they are doing. Had a pop tart today. OMG was it good If you haven’t tried this place. You are missing out

Wesley

Google
Absolutely delicious combination of sweet and savory! The house made jam is set beautifully, the biscuit was fluffy and crunchy in all the right places, and the sausage was well seasoned. Egg Carton is one of, if not my Absolute favorite cart in town, and I'm so thrilled they're back in action!!

Google
This place is incredible on all fronts. The foods amazing the folks who run the cart are kind and incredible. It’s a convenient location.

Jacqueline Dickson

Google
Hands down the best breakfast sandwich in town served by incredibly nice people.

Ashley Lopez

Google
Really awesome food cart. Homemade biscuits and homemade veg sausage

Luca Legate

Google
They have gluten-free bread, and they checked in with me about my allergy, . They made the effort to use a separate pan to reduce the chance of cross contamination. Theyre service was awesome 👌 the food was even better.

Yelp
Great breakfast sandwichs with super friendly husband/wife run business. So glad to have them back in the neighborhood!

Yelp
Menu photo The food here is SO GOOD! Little family owned and operated cart and everything is incredible. I actually called them after we got home to thank them Because the food was so amazing. Absolutely recommend grabbing food here to go on your way to (or from) anywhere. I recommend the one with the jam on the sandwich!

Yelp
Found this gem via an Eater article. Located in the Foster-Powell neighborhood What We Had: - 2 egg sandwiches on biscuits (Belmont and Bourbon Blues) Pros: - A menu that has a lot of options without being overwhelming - The cart owner came out to give us our food and napkins individually - Amazing biscuits. Possibly better than Pine State. - Located in a food pod with many other food options Cons: - Open only Friday to Sunday but I can live with that :) Overall: 100% will be back again even though it's a little farther away for us in NE. Solid food. Solid service. Thank you!

Yelp
This place is the best - we come here on weekends when they are open and the folks are just the nicest. Food is great and we can come with our dog, plenty of places to hang outside, appreciate the level of customer service and have never had a bad meal. We will keep coming back!

Yelp
I still absolutely adore this food cart. Their breakfast sandwiches and potatoes are superior to any you'll find anywhere in Portland. My husband and I have been going her for probably 4 years now and always come back for more. We get the Hot Mama sausage on the Ronald sandwiches and it is delectable. Try it, you won't regret it. On top of amazing food, they are great people, so you get good food and support a very sweet local business. Can't get better than that.

Yelp
This place is phenomenal! I saw it driving by and I'm so glad I decided to stop. Delicious, unique Portland food without the premium Portland pricing! Seriously, for the food, the prices are great. I ordered 2 breakfast sandwiches and a Raspberry Lemonade. The lemonade is so tart and refreshing! It's not too sweet to be a morning drink. I personally ate the Bourbon Blues with bacon (up-charge for bacon totally worth it for me) & I opted to have it on a homemade biscuit for an extra $1 (also super worth it). Quite possibly the best breakfast sandwich I've ever had. Sweet, salty, savory, it truly hit all the marks. They did not overdue it with the syrup which I appreciate. The blueberry vanilla basil jam adds such a nice, fresh twist, all together I get a blueberry pancake vibe. The sausage was good (not as seasoned as I would like), but as a bacon gal, that addition took my sandwich over the top. Overall, I had such a hard time choosing food that I will DEFINITELY be back to work my way through the menu. Hit the spot for a great start to the weekend!

Yelp
This is why I love PDX. The food truck culture offers so much to owner and customer. We get maximum eclectic choice because the entry bar is lower for those who are driven to be their own boss. So people appear who want to shine doing a handful of dishes well. Now there are plenty of bad food trucks out there. But I like the FOSTER street pod. The vibe of the area as a whole is really cool. The sitting area outside of Bocci salon, for example, is sweetly real and unpretentious. It's also cool as beans. Anyway, the Egg Carton. The chef/owner/cook is very straightforward and cooks with care. I was sticking around, and so got my dish played it up. As you can see in the photo, that's a lot of care for food truck cuisine. I love that. All the components tasted good, the price was fair, the portion was fair. Coffee was from a French press, I don't remember the name of the local roaster, but it was enjoyable and respectable. I'm not in the Foster Street area as much as I was when I first moved to town, but when I am and it's mealtime, the Foster Street pod is a solid go to, and the egg carton will do you right by breakfast.

Yelp
We live super close to Foster Food Cart pod and I finally got around to trying The Egg Carton after hearing good things about it. Quality ingredients and the flavors of the hash with the red pepper aioli, pork belly, spinach, tomato and egg tasted really good together. The downfall was that the sweet potatoes in the hash were unfortunately quite mushy and not crispy like I prefer my hashes to be. I haven't tried any of their sandwiches but I'm not sure that I would spend my money on their hash again.
google avatar

Lauren L.

Yelp
Tastes even better than it looks. This is the Belmont on their biscuit. Quality ingredients and consistent.

Yelp
We have driven by Egg Carton one trillion times but we rarely got a chance to eat there before the pandemic. I had forgotten how impressive it is. They know how to take orders in a safe manner and they are still plenty fast given the circumstances. I ordered the Popeye Hash meal because they were running out of the biscuits and gravy breakfast. Holy smokes this dish was incredible. Every bite was absurdly flavorful. It was even glorious to look upon (see exhibit A). At first I thought the amount of food in the dish wasn't quite worth the cost but I was so wrong. The proprietor was pleasant, efficient, and safe. Bravo!

Yelp
Was walking the area and stumbled upon this little corner with all the street food and this one looked and smelled the best so we ordered two sandwiches with no meat and sat down In the nice covered outdoor area. There was maybe a person in front of us before a big rush came, but we sat for a seemingly long time for a sandwich with only an egg to fry. When we did get them, they were cold. Not sure if that's how they're supposed to be served but it wasn't our cup of tea and we paid $8-9 a peice for something the size of my palm, that got wrapped in brown paper, and had one 50 cent egg in it/no "expensive" protein. Over-priced for what we got. Waited too long. (I think they prioritized phone orders, also their cooks bring out the food instead of calling names. Convenient, yes, but seems inefficient) An expected warm morning breakfast food was served cold. Wanted this one to be good but it wasn't for us. We might try again, but there's a lot of choices in Portland and this one didnt impress.

Yelp
This place is addictingly delicious, it can be hard to wait for the weekend to come around for when they open! My favorite breakfast sandwich is the Belmont. The biscuits and gravy are also very good, and the eggs Benedict. Love that the takeout containers are compostable too!
google avatar

Alex P.

Yelp
The weekend biscuits are wonderful. My favorite sandwich is the bourbon blues. The prep time is usually very quick and the staff is always friendly. The ingredients are high quality and the menu has some very unique items. The only issue I have ever had was cold eggs, but that has only happened twice in the fifteen to twenty times I have ordered from them.
google avatar

Dani D.

Yelp
Perfect eggs every time. I love the biscuits, too. I'm always happy after breakfast here, and my favorite dish is the Bourbon Blues.

Yelp
Yum. Yuuuum. Oh my god. Yum! My new DP and I went here this morning for breakfast on our way to do a million and one ERRANDS. And after a few. This place is the shizel for breakfast sandwiches... Which I and my new dining partner love. A lot. So they have a lot of choices but I say... spring for the extra buck and get the delicious biscuit! The DP had a Canadian Bacon thing leaking egg yolk in a fantastic way on an English muffin... I had a Jack-n-the-bean on a muffin with house pickled jalapeños that give my own a run for the money... Smart-ass breakfast at it's finest! And the basket of hot sauces.

Yelp
This is my boyfriend and my first time in Portland and we wanted to try local some local food! Pros: This place stayed open until 2pm even on Easter! The folks were really nice and even brought the food from the cart and to the seating area. The Eggs Benedict was ok, but I like that there was more than just the classic Benedict. Cons: For the price of the food, it wasn't as filling as we would hope. I try to get the Eggs Benedict for each new brunch place that I go to and their plate had no sides to go with the meal (you would have to pay extra for sides). For two: a classic Benedict + classic Benedict with avocado and tomatoes, a coffee and a bottled water with tip came to a total of $25, which wouldn't be bad if we were at least somewhat full afterwards. The coffee also was pretty sour for some reason but it could've been the effect of the hollandaise sauce. Because this is a local though, I would try it again for different plate if I'm ever in the area!
google avatar

Kal C.

Yelp
These peeps are sweet. There isn't a bad thing on the menu, and everything sounds good at all times. Why? Because it is. One of the greatest food items ever made was the breakfast sandwich, which is limitless in its offerings. Skip McDonalds or wherever you were going for a "breakfast sandwich" and eat what real men (like me) eat: Egg Carton goodies.
google avatar

Andrea S.

Yelp
The great thing about this place is that there's no huge line or wait for brunch... which in Portland, is hard to find. The people who work the cart are friendly and helpful. We ordered the arugulove and the hash with avocado. They said if we wanted to, we could sit in an inside area around the corner and they could bring us the food. Great! We found the spot and it was quiet and kept us warm. The woman brought us our food, and I must say, I throughly enjoyed it. The sandwich was definitely the winner where as the hash was mediocre. I was disappointed by their avocado. It was a strange blended mixture, not sliced (see in photos). The food was really good overall. I really liked the sandwich and would come back for that specific item again. Tip: definitely get it on the homemade biscuit.
google avatar

Katie W.

Yelp
Adorable food cart located on a little lot among a ton of other food carts. I came here super hungover this morning, ordered the hash and ate every frickin bite it was so good. Will definitely be coming back! Oh awesome friendly staff too, who answered all my bougie ass questions

Yelp
You have to go! Owner was on the TV show "chopped" so when we came to Portland I had to try it. Took my dad & husband for Father's day. We all got something different and we all LOVED our food! My husband even got 2 breakfasts! I highly recommend the Mama's eggs Benedict. Spicy patty sausage instead of Canadian bacon, mmmm!! If you want a fabulous tasty breakfast and don't mind picnic table/outside dining, you have to go
google avatar

Kristina N.

Yelp
We happened to stop by this food card pod, The Egg Carton stood out- it was the cute logo- on our way to run errands... it was so great we are going back tomorrow with our kids! Delicious, fresh, beautiful sandwiches (I was too hungry to snap a pic before I devoured it!) Highly recommend the Smokin' Helen, add avocado, it was very good!
google avatar

Yelp
The best biscuits and gravy you'll ever find. Get there early because they sell out fast.

Yelp
Love love love love!! This cart was more than what I was expecting. The food was so good! It was something I'd expect from a great breakfast restaurant. Time I walked up I smelled the amazing aroma that is bacon!!! Wonderful scents of biscuits, eggs and ham filled my nostrils. It took me a minute to figure out what I wanted because everything on their menu sounded amazing. I settled on what I believe is the FoPo Cristo. Listen; French toast with jelly, Dijon mustard, bacon, cheese and an over easy egg with powdered sugar sprinkled on top! Yassss, lawd, yassss! The combination sounded a little weird at first but from others reviews and pictures, I had to get it! The French toast was delicious, just a tad bit soggy on the inside from the jelly but that also could of been due to the fact that I had to chase my toddler before I could eat. I loved the crispy bacon and ham. I don't like over easy eggs and forgot to ask them to fry it but it actually wasn't super runny so I still ended up eating most of it. I will for sure be back. The staff members were super sweet! My daughter kept waving and saying hi! There are some benches in front of the carts and I can imagine they fill up quickly but we went early so it wasn't a large crowd. Can't wait to try another item!!
google avatar

Yelp
Ate here for the first time today and got the popeye hash. It was very tasty overall but I felt like it could have used a bit more acidity. The potatoes were soft and pillowy which was great but they could have used a little crunch. I did see pieces of rosemary on them but couldn't taste it. My only other criticism is that the dish was way too greasy. Aside from those things I enjoyed it and will be back to try other Egg Carton offerings. The cart chef was very friendly.
google avatar

Lily G.

Yelp
Our food did take a while and it didn't look too busy but the food was absolutely AMAZING. We got the sweet potato hash and the Arugalove on gluten-free bread and will definitely be back. A 25 minute wait was well worth it and the employees here seem super sweet. Thanks for a killer experience!
google avatar

Garrett S.

Yelp
This place is way good! It's a bit pricey, but delicious and high quality. I got a bacon and egg sandwich, with jam and cheddar, and a superb monte Cristo sandwich. With a 15% tip it came to over $17. A side of hashbrowns with one of these sandwiches (without increasing the price) could be a great way to give more value to the overall meal. Overall, a great place :)
google avatar

Catherine R.

Yelp
This was by far the BEST breakfast in Portland. It was so good we went back for breakfast the next day. If we stayed longer in Portland, we would have gone every single day. If you go there on the weekend, get the homemade biscuit with the hot mama gravy. Any of the egg sandwiches are great but the eggs Benedict was my favorite. Their hollandaise sauce is out of this world. The blueberry vanilla basil jam on a homemade biscuit is a must get. 10/10 recommend. If I ever go back to Portland, the first place I'm going is the egg carton.
google avatar

Yelp
Had the biscuits and gravy, was one of the best have ever had. Fast service and friendly people

Yelp
Super excited to try out this breakfast food cart but my expectations were a little higher then the food we ate unfortunately. I ordered the Popeye with no bacon and avocado instead. So I was so excited upon ordering that I forgot to ask for a biscuit instead of an English muffin ... SAD! But they should have asked right? Up sell that shit, GIRL! Anyways, when I got my food I was pretty bummed out! And it looked really sloppy.. no love at all. Boo! I wanted to get coffee but they were out? But recommended a coffee shop across the street. Steamboat I believe was the name of the coffee place. (Friendly staff!) My friend got the eggs Benedict and presentation wise hers looked better but she also wasn't impressed. It was kinda pricey too. I don't remember the cost but yeah when I saw the total I was like uhhh wait what did I even order ??? Haha I got some biscuits to go but those were mediocre too! :( bummed.

Steven S.

Yelp
An absolutely delicious breakfast that was put together well (equally distributed ingredients on sandwich & not falling apart). The flavors were fantastic. Simple dishes made spectacular with sauces, herbs, etc. Will be coming back soon.
google avatar

Dun G.

Yelp
This is the best breakfast place ever hands down. But I barely get to be here because they are always closed at random or the hours are off and they are terrible social media. Worth the hassle if you get in but I usually only get to eat here once every six months. Sad.
google avatar

Becky S.

Yelp
I saw the owner on Chopped, so I had to check this place out for myself! Absolutely AMAZING food! I had the eggs benedict with avocado, berry lemonade, and house made biscuit with house made marionberry jam. Everything was perfect. The hollandaise was perfectly lemony without being sour or vinegary. The English muffin was toasted just right, and the avocado was spread over the toasted muffin. The ham they use had an incredible smoked flavor that didn't taste artificial whatsoever. And the poached egg was cooked just right. The biscuits are HUGE and seriously on another level of deliciousness. They are flaky but dense, absolutely incredible with butter and house made jam on them. The jam was so good that I bought a jar of it to take home! Also, there was no line or long wait on a Friday at 1:00 in the afternoon, but I imagine it's a longer wait on a weekend morning. There is a nice seating area with shade for hot days and cover for rainy days. I can't wait to go back and try the hash and the famous FoPo Cristo sandwich. This will definitely not be my last visit to The Egg Carton!
google avatar

Jody T.

Yelp
2May18 @ 11:45. Food truck at foster carts. Lots of food carts here. Picnic tables scattered around and an indoor space too. Many of the carts don't open until noon. We had the Popeye egg sandwich and the special of the day egg sandwich. Not too expensive at $7 each. The Popeye was considerably larger than the special. Both sandwiches were tasty with lots of flavors melding into a nice juicy goodness. The eggs were cooked with runny yolks, which we like, but a good part of the yolk ended up on the paper wrapper. The bottom biscuit of the special was very wet from oils, etc and broke apart quickly. The biscuit on the Popeye held up.
google avatar

Jenn S.

Yelp
My friend came up from Pendleton last weekend and wanted to try The Egg Carton specifically from all the rave reviews online. Well, we weren't disappointed! I enjoyed the Spicy Mama eggs benedict and shared a side of sweet potato home fries with rosemary. (She got the classic eggs benny.) They referred us across the street to Speedboat coffee for my Iced Latte needs and when we returned our meal was ready! Will definitely be going back!

Shannon K.

Yelp
I got the Ronald on a biscuit. One of the top 3 breakfast sandwiches of my life! Thank you!

Yelp
"Mmm...speed-eating dessert-y pancakes..." On June 23, I returned to The Egg Carton, basically because Sarah and Tim are masters at luring me to eat a gluttonous breakfast. Granted, I'd do it anyway, but when you basically make a near-3-pound "dessert" for a breakfast item, I had to somehow turn it into an unofficial food challenge. At this rate, I'll be amazed if the panda doesn't get diabetes in the next five years. I mean, serving Devil's Food chocolate pancakes is one thing, but then to offer a "Devil's Tower" of five pancakes just makes any sweet tooth succumb to the sheer food porn that awaits. As a note, the "Devil's Tower" was not on the menu, but basically was $12. The more normal-sized portion of that week's special (just two pancakes) was $7. Oh, and for your sugary pleasure, let's add macerated strawberries and tons of chocolate syrup between each pancake, top it with a cloud of whipped cream, more chocolate syrup, and chocolate chips. I figure if I wish hard enough, I can convince myself it's fat free and sugar free. Hey, let's add a side of bacon! Only two strips, but still enough meat crack to make everything better. It weighed slightly less than three pounds, not really much of a quantity challenge. While I could have upped the stakes and asked for more food, I figured Oregon could use more speed challenges. I massacred everything -- pancakes and bacon -- in about four minutes. Think you can eat this meal faster? I'm sure there are a bunch who can, especially if they are professional eaters. Of course, I videotaped my food destruction. (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=RLqXyWpRDPE) Sorry ladies, this doesn't look pretty. Tim watched on the side, just out of the camera's view. Even as I blitzed through the copious amounts of starch, fruit, chocolate, and whipped cream, I still enjoyed every bite. The pancakes were extremely light, going down the hatch very easily because it soaked up all that chocolate and the saucy strawberries. The dish was not as sweet as I thought it would be, leaving me pleasantly surprised. Perhaps that's another reason why I could motor so quickly through everything. Overly sweet = immediate panda coma. Not here. OK, so I fought the food coma on the way home, but hey, it took a while to kick in. Before I turned into a pancake savage, I also drank some coffee here. Sarah offers Cellar Door Coffee, probably a light to medium roast here. It works for people that need that invigorating caffeinated punch in the morning. Personally, I'd rather get jolted with a bold, dark-roasted, full-bodied cup o' Joe. One of my friends enjoyed the FoPo Cristo, the very item I raved about on my first visit. I'm glad the cristo stayed on the menu. This Devil's Tower won't be on the menu all the time, mainly because strawberries are a seasonal fruit. But I would love it if pancakes remained on the menu, rotating pancake flavors and seasonal fruit items. Another food challenge idea: simply increase the number of pancakes and strips of bacon. Seemingly endless possibilities! I'd definitely like to try the Eggs Benedict and the French Toast, two main menu items that have eluded my mighty panda jaw so far. If you're a breakfast fan like me, head to this food cart!
google avatar

Amy L.

Yelp
Love this cart made me the best pancakes I've ever tasted in Portland. So fluffy and eggy. When I went she had the blueberry pancake with maple cinnamon syrup. It was so delicious and tasty. The owner informed me that she had brunch on Sundays and also rotating seasonal pancake flavors depending on what fresh local produce is in season. Can't wait to go back for brunch and try some of her other yummy options. They also have French press coffee!!
google avatar

Thao N.

Yelp
Very good Sunday breakfast/brunch. There was no wait ordering, but there was a little wait for the food. Granted that there was 5 groups ahead of us, and the workers checked up on us and apologized for the long wait. There was plenty of sitting and there was a couple of games that kept us entertained while we waited. The wait was definitely worth it! We got the FoPo Cristo and Eggs Benedict with a side of bacon, also got their raspberry lemonade to drink. The lemonade was refreshing and had a nice tart flavor, which I loved. The food was just fabulous, we loved every bite and cleaned our plates. Definitely planning on going back and trying different items on the list. It was also very nice to have our food delivered and on real plates and silverware!
google avatar

George P.

Yelp
Get the biscuits and jam here. They're amazing! Flaky, buttery; and light for the biscuits and the jam is homemade by the owners. My go-to breakfast spot. I always get the biscuits and Jam with a side of bacon and coffee. The only downside is they're not open Tuesday and Wednesday.
google avatar

Dan A.

Yelp
Soooo good. I wish I lived closer to this cart. It's worth the drive, if you're at all in the neighborhood. Lots of creative menu options...so many ways to make egg sandwiches. I must try them all! And yes- they have a gluten free bread option.
google avatar

Doug B.

Yelp
I go here frequently and everything I have ever ordered has been beyond great! They have the best biscuits in town hands down
google avatar

Martin M.

Yelp
Awesome little food truck with great service and high quality food. I recommend the Popeye Egg Sandwich on a handmade biscuit. The breakfast hash was also very good and the eggs were perfectly poached. Strongly recommend this place.
google avatar

Carolina N.

Yelp
I'll keep this simple: The Egg Carton has amazing breakfast, just try it. My favorite menu items include The Ronald & The Belmont on their homemade biscuit and the french toast. So so so good!
google avatar

Kayla C.

Yelp
We came here at about 10am on a Sunday and there wasn't much of a line yet. I got the smokin helen, which had Gouda, arugula, bacon, egg, jalapeño and marionberry jam. It was excellent. Next time I might get it on an English muffin because the biscuit tends to fall apart. Great place!
google avatar

Jacob W.

Yelp
Disclaimer: I do not like going out for breakfast so this wasn't my first choice but it was the only cart open at the time and it's what my group wanted. I got the potatoes and a breakfast sandwich. The rosemary potatoes were delicious but the sandwich wasn't memorable. The BAT Benedict was pricey and not filling according to a group member. And even with an extra couple pieces of French toast and potatoes it was nowhere near enough for one of the other members. I don't see the hype, maybe we just ordered the wrong items.
google avatar

Zak W.

Yelp
Really, really good food here. It's like restaurant quality and the service is great. My favorite thing to get here is The Bourbon. It's made with their own sausage, homemade jam, bourbon syrup, an egg, and their delicious homemade biscuits. They serve everything from eggs benedict to many different variation of egg + biscuits sandwiches. and biscuits and gravy. Everything I've tried so far has been great and the folks working the cart are always really friendly and fast with service. Love this place and I definitely recommend.
google avatar

Monica R.

Yelp
HOLY CRAP! Deliciously mind blowing!!! I came here 2 mornings in a row during my 3 day stay in Portland and I couldn't ask for an even perfect breakfast! The Fopo and Frenchie is what I had. Two AMAZING breakfast sandwiches that I haven't found before and can not wait to come back to Portland and try again! The women and man working at the cart were so kind and brought our food to our table. Service that I don't normally get from a food truck lot. THANK YOU BOTH! :)
google avatar

Jen P.

Yelp
I originally came for the Jurassic cart but since they were closed I stopped here instead and I'm glad I did. I had the Popeye hash, it was delicious, the red pepper aioli is awesome. I will definitely be back!
google avatar

Beatriz D.

Yelp
The best biscuit sandwich in the city. Any of them...my personal favorite is the Belmont: ham, egg, goat cheese, arugula & habanero raspberry jam. Their home made habanero raspberry jam brightens up any dish. It's just spicy enough to get your brow sweating on a hot Sunday morning. The biscuits are salty, buttery, crunchy goodness, made fresh every day. Thick enough to hold a sloppy sandwich together but soft enough not to tear up your mouth in the process. The daily specials don't disappoint either. Consistent friendly service as well! Grab a coffee from The Sugar Shack and grab a seat in the shade.
