Amador City Guide: Here Are the Best Restaurants and Bars to Try | Eater SF

"Inspired by experience working in a New York City wine bar that specialized in organic, biodynamic and sustainable wines, winemaker Chris Walsh returned to Amador to open one of the county’s only natural wineries; the super-chill tasting room offers a remarkably affordable $5 five-wine tasting that might include a carbonically macerated zinfandel or a skin-fermented blend of pinot gris and pinot grigio, and if you’re in luck they’ll be grilling burgers on the back patio where you can kick back and listen to the creek running by." - Lauren Saria

End of Nowhere: How the Sierra Foothills’ Rich Wine History Drives Amador County’s Only Natural Winery | Eater SF

"Operating from a 20-acre vineyard on the property he grew up on in Pioneer, End of Nowhere is Walsh’s natural-wine project that brought low-intervention winemaking back to Amador County; he sourced organic grapes while his own vines matured, made his first 2015 vintage in a 600-square-foot garage, and shifted production in 2020 into a former auto shop on the family property. I produce a range that showcases what the foothills can do—traditional, lower-alcohol zinfandels inspired by 1970s styles, a zinfandel rosé and a carbonic zinfandel to highlight the grape, plus two styles of pinot gris (red and white), mourvèdre, and barbera—using no-till and dry farming on volcanic, high-elevation sites and avoiding designer yeasts so the fruit and place speak. I opened a small tasting room in Amador City in November 2018 that functions more like a laid-back wine bar—hosting live music, guest chefs selling burgers or pizza, and showing local artists—and while I don’t want to be called a “pioneer,” I’m generally regarded as the first based-in-Amador producer working in a fully natural style." - Dianne de Guzman

The “End of Nowhere", what a cool name. It's the name of a local Amador City wine label. Their wine tasting room is right in historic Amador City. I'm personally not a wine drinker, I dropped into their tasting room for the food. They were grilling burgers on the grill on the front patio. The smell of those burgers just hit me hard. I had to try one out. So glad I did, it's one of the best burgers I've eaten. Onto the food... ohhh that burger was outstanding. It's not any ordinary burger. Heck no. The 6.5 oz patty meat blend is a thing of lamb, bison, and Wagyu. I have never had that blend before. I can't stop thinking about it. Plus the chef caramelized the onions, spread a housemade mustard aioli, used quality white American cheese, and an artisan burger bun. Bam... delicious! $14. We also ordered a simple salad $5. Nice serving size. It was gorgeous looking and fresh tasting. The wine tasting room is modern, bright, and comfy. The staff is super welcoming. Wine tasting is $10. The End Of Nowhere wines was founded by Chris Walsh. His philosophy is sustainable farmed grapes, 100% native yeast fermentation, no filtration, minimal sulfur, neutral all aging.... gets you some delicious wine! In 2014, he came back to his childhood stomping grounds after many years working as a sommelier in New York City to plant a 10 acre vineyard in Pioneer, CA. Now the wine label uses those grapes and other local grown organic grapes. The shop also has a front and back patio area which the creek runs alongside. The back patio has a deck and lower plaza. The particular day I visited, there was no event or live performance so it was quite beautiful and serene back there. They do host a ton of events. Large shade trees and the creek running alongside (which right now is running at a low stream) sounding like well... a babbling creek. Check out their website endofnowhere.wine for their calendar of events. And they have a bunch of events lined up. Here a a few .... Art n burgers, wine tasting n chef sampling, oyster fest, and wine and local reknown chef dinners. Quality fine wine and dining taste with a small town welcoming vibe.

Had an amazing time at this winery serving natural wines! Chris the owner and winemaker was so great, knowledgeable, and fun to chat with. The tasting flight is only $5!! That's so crazy. What a deal. Chris even threw in some off menu tastings for us, and all were delicious! We had burgers, and of course Chris made them himself as well on his grill. Lots of seating outside, but AC inside was perfect for us. We bought a few bottles as well. Will definitely come back and recommend!

Google
One of our absolute favorite spots to go. Chris and Laura are amazing, make killer burgers and fried chicken sandos (among other guest features) and serve up some awesome natural wines. Current favorites are their Nero d'Avolo and their funky but delicious Something Else. If you're in Amador County over a weekend, this is a must stop.

Google
Probably the best barbecue ever. The porterhouse was perfect. On a normal day, superb burgers off of the grill, and excellent service. And a really relaxing spot with a beautiful view of the creek.

Google
Wonderful spot to relax and have good conversation. I did the wine tasting and learned some new fun facts and we enjoyed some great burgers that were cooked just right. Worth a visit!

Yelp
A cute little town with a fun, funky winery tasting room. Stopped in to experience some local fair and grab some dinner. This was a perfect spot! Staff were friendly from the get go, knowledgeable, and service was quick. The burger was tasty, a combo ground of 3 different meats, and hit the spot. Highly recommend if you're out and about in Amador.

Yelp
Gem of a place! Didn't eat there but the burgers looked so tasty. Friendly vibe, knowledgeable and fun team, been there twice and highly recommend. We were so in it that I only got this one pic (but sums it up quite nicely).

Yelp
What a gem. We stopped in for wine tasting and discovered that they serve burgers. The wines are unique, very natural and unfiltered. They were like summer in a glass. My burger was excellent. I loved the chips. Our server was knowledgeable, nice and fun.

Yelp
Incredible wines and burgers in a gorgeous spot with fantastic and knowledgeable service. This may be the best burger you'll ever eat! Thick, juicy, perfectly blended from waygu, lamb, and bison and grilled over mesquite, there's nothing lacking here. The spicy aioli is so flavorful. The warm, toasted, bun is super soft but doesn't fall apart. The wines are excellent with some unique flavor profiles you may not see elsewhere.

Yelp
Best hamburgers in Amador county! Local lamb and beef. Great organic wine, art and people! Beautiful patio by the creek. Interesting art exhibits. Their sparkling Rose is superb!

Yelp
I can't believe I haven't reviewed this place yet. One of our best experiences ever! We stopped in here on our way home from Amador for the weekend. We specifically chose it because they had decently priced burgers and it was on our way back to Nevada. When we got to the town initially - it was a little dead on Sunday morning. We ended up stopping in to get a coffee as we waited for the End of Nowhere to open. We were able to make a reservation online and found this place through a wine tourism website. What's unique about this place is that the wine is more natural than other wines meaning less sugar and less sulfites with a shorter shelf life. It really reminded me of the wines and ciders I've had in Spain. The burger was delicious and the perfect combination before our long drive home. The woman doing our wine tasting with us was fun, energetic, and knowledgeable and made the whole experience!

Mary W.

Yelp
We heard about the restaurant from friends who said it's the best hamburger in the County. They were right. BBQ burgers at their best. Service was excellent and friendly. The ambiance is perfect with a little whimsical and arty. We each had a glass of his wine and will return for more.

Yelp
This is a lovely little stopover when visiting quaint little Amador City. Not only do they serve up fantastic wines and are considered "Amador County's only local natural winery" by the Vintners Association, but we discovered they have started seving up incredible meat pies and pastries on Sundays. We ordered chicken and pulled pork meat pies while walking through town, took them home and reheated them in the oven and thoroughly enjoyed. Everything was super tasty, from the hot meaty filling to the rich and delectable pastry crust. We got a mandarin pastry as well that was the biggest hit with my son, who loved the pairing of fruit and custard. This use to be the home of Uphill Winery, another great winery, now located in Sutter Creek. They have a sign out front, but in case you miss them they are in the ground floor of the old Amador Hotel building on the end by the creek. Check them out!

Yelp
Beautiful outdoor patio. Amazing food (don't underestimate the spicy burger!). Fantastic wines (unfined, unfiltered, vegan, all natural, low sulfites, low alcohol). Really friendly people! Can't wait to go back!

Yelp
Why is there only one Yelp review of this lovely place? Go there now! While searching for a snack, a sign that said "burgers" lured us. We popped into this super cute establishment and ordered a delicious Swiss mushroom burger which was served to us on the very peaceful and spacious back patio. The burger was juicy, perfectly done, and complemented by a creamy, slightly spicy sauce. Mmm. Since it was early afternoon and we were driving, we didn't want to drink alcohol. Still, there was a wine menu and I have doubt that it was perfectly curated to go with the burgers. The proprietors were extremely warm and friendly. They mentioned that various guest chef events will be taking place. Next time we're in town, we'll check it out.

Randy C.

Yelp
The food and the service was excellent. The burgers we had were just outstanding if you happen to be ever up in Amador city this is the place to stop at. Chris is the guy who makes the burgers and he is a rockstar on the grill.

Yelp
Unfiltered wines with amazing character presented by knowledgeable and friendly winemaker and staff. No imagination is required to pick up the notes of the unique approaches to varietals offered. Don't let the coziness of the tasting room mislead you into underestimating this absolute gem. End of Nowhere is somewhere everyone should experience when visiting the area. I cannot more highly recommend a weekend getaway lunch location for avid or curious wine drinkers. For the price conscious consumer, I am happy to report that End of Nowhere is one of the most reasonably priced both in retail and wine club I have experienced and the value for price is astounding.

Yelp
Amazing little tasting room with great burgers and great ambiance. A bit like finding your favorite neighborhood wine bar transported to a teacup-sized gold country town not quite at the end of nowhere, that's another thirty or so miles up in the hills, but close enough to feel like you've gotten away from the hectic day-to-day and into somewhere a little more blissful. The wines are natural and beautifully composed, the conversation is friendly and thoughtful, the vibe is very much where-you-want-to-be. Definitely worth the trip.

Yelp
We really enjoyed the wine and food here. The zin rose, was very unique. We split a chicken sandwich and salad, and both were very good. We'll be back!

Karissa T.

Yelp
loved the tasting and the pizzas are amazing. The lady doing the tastings for us was sooo nice. I want to go back already!! the place was so cute. loved my time there.

Laura B.

Yelp
I love this place! In the midst of quaint "gold country" vibes, this place is modern and the wines are kick-ass! If you're lucky, you'll actually be served by the winemaker. In addition to delicious wines, you can't beat the burger! Love this place, and they're open til 8, dog friendly, and kid-friendly. Can't beat it.
