"Never has a name been more suited to a business. Epicurean Trader is exactly what you’d expect: a trader of small-batch, artisanal food goods, and then some. Every item within this gem box store is hand-selected and conjures images of wicker baskets stuffed with cheese and bread. If you’re planning a picnic, buy everything, right down to the salt (it’s Jacobsen’s), here. We especially love the gourmet kits, which here are curated by personality. (Who wouldn’t want to receive a sustainably packed box filled with olive oil, spices, sea salt, locally roasted coffee beans, and small-batch honey?) While many of the products are available online, visiting the stores—there are three of them—is an experience. The wildflower bouquets are exquisite, the interior is beautifully merchandized, and the bakery counter is a sweet dream. Store images courtesy of Leslie Santarina."

Epicurean Traders is such a gem! I love browsing through their curated selection of gourmet groceries — there’s always something new and interesting to discover. Their pastries are from various local bakeries and absolutely delicious, and the café au lait is so good I keep coming back for more. The staff are always kind and welcoming, which adds to the warm atmosphere. And I have to mention the beautiful flower displays by the window — they’re such a mood booster every time I walk by. Highly recommend this place whether you're grabbing a coffee, picking up something special, or just looking for a little everyday joy.

Google
Clean friendly establishment that packs a carefully curated selection of top quality products in small space. What a find thanks to a local resident’s recommendation! Excellent bread and pastries from Tartine and Craftsman & Wolves but without the wait at those places. Amazing coffee selection - Verve, Ritual, High Wire and more. Superb spirits and great cheese selection. Prices are reasonable especially considering it eliminates having to drive all over to the individual purveyors. Did not try the coffee (Equator) but devoured 2 excellent pastries in record time. Great location in sunny part of SF with many nice restaurants and shops reminiscent of Europe. Will go back for sure.

Google
great selection of gourmet foods and drinks - perfect for taking to the Hayes Valley Park next door and enjoying. A little on the pricey side, almost the same as from a cafe or restaurant... has a small to go "coffee shop" coffee/tea/pastry area in front that is served and can be enjoyed at the parklet or next door park.

Google
Love getting coffee and sandwiches at Epicurian Hayes Valley. Jose is the best proprietor, knowledgable and friendly. He helps make the place sparkle. You can count on this store for good sandwiches, pastry and libations, with friendly staff playing good music.

A fine selection of artisanal goodies from around the world! From cocktail bitters to granola and Italian pastas, curated food that is inspiring and delicious. Support local that supports local!

Google
I really love your store, but I wanted to share a concern. One of your employees was overheard complaining about the store, her job, and making coffee for customers. She expressed frustration about having to make coffee at 4 o’clock and even mentioned disliking customers and coworkers for it. She seemed quite upset, and I don’t think this reflects well on your business. I happened to see her at the store during my visit, and while she didn’t explicitly mention the store’s name, it was clear she was referring to yours.

Google
We love this store. It's like an artisan grocery store with many rare and hard to find items. It has everything from produce, alcohol, chocolate, seasoning and specialized ingredients then you won't find anywhere else. Also they make their shopping experience unique by their upbeat music throughout the day.

Yelp
Selection is excellent. Various items displayed attractively. Huge number of cheeses. Wines, olive oils, breads, you name it. Employees are knowledgeable and helpful. Love the scents or smells when entering. Reminds one of something in Europe. Only downer is that some of the prices are a bit high. So, be transported away, and enjoy. Check it out. -- workingman's gourmand

Yelp
Love the place. Love the food. Nice big selection. I had a long, tiring performance at Davies Hall and have to be picky about what I eat beforehand. I thought I could just get some bread and cheese and sit backstage and scarf. I bought an epee (bread that looks like rolls that are stuck together), a hunk of smoked Gouda, a packaged salad and some capicolo. The packaged salad I bought was old and slimy. The cheese was moldy. Ow.

Yelp
I wish I had visited The Epicurean earlier in my SF trip. I wanted to try Rebel Cheese and was excited to find it, but had just eaten and was leaving the city soon. Great selection of snacks and booze. Very cute shop.

Yelp
One of my favorite go to shops in Hayes Valley. The coffee bar inside of the market that has great quality drinks. My personal favorite is the sea salt honey latte! They also have pastries from Tartine and Craftsman and Wolves which are fresh (highly recommend coming here instead and skipping the lines). I've been going here for coffee and pastries for the past 2 years and always had great service and experiences as well!

Yelp
This is still my favorite Epicurean in the city since I used to live near by and would always stock up here during the pandemic or when I needed to buy fancy stuff that would impress friends for house parties. Their alcohol selection is incredible, their fresh food/coffee was always perfect to grab for breakfast, and the staff has always been extremely helpful. Shoutout to the cashier who helped me choose what cheese to buy since he could very clearly see I had no clue what I was doing. Even though this was back in 2021, I still remember how good the cheeses were that he selected.

Yelp
This is a really nice little shop in a great area. I stopped here after a nice dinner with friends and I was surprised by the great selection and quality of goods. They had an excellent offering of cheese and wines, some of which I haven't seen at other locations. They also carry my son's favorite ice cream and had some delicious little drinks for me to try. Some items are a bit pricey but for the location and what you get, I think it's reasonable. Also, I saw some negative reviews about the staff and customer service here, however, I don't want to be approached by employees while I'm browsing and I appreciated that no one bothered me until I specifically asked for help. I think good service is definitely subjective. I will be sure to make this a regular stop when I'm in the area.

Yelp
Getting craftsman and wolves baked goods without fighting for a parking spot in mission is the best thing that happened! The macaron dotted kouigh amann is amazing. A good selection of fancy alcohol, condiment, spice and local produce. Cool place to find new things

Yelp
Very cute, albeit pricey, market with artisan goods. Coffee bar at the front of the store serves high quality coffee with fun seasonal flavors as well. Great service.

Yelp
I loved this shop! If I were a local, I'd pop in for all my needs. They have some produce in the back, along with fresh cheese, wines, chocolates, and small home goods. Such a lovely place with friendly service.

Yelp
I love stopping by this shop and browsing through the selection of local SF goods. Yes it's very expensive and you should probably not make it a habit to shop here, but it's a great option for gifts or just a fun snack to brighten up your day. In the mornings, they also offer pastries from local bakeries (Craftsmen and Wolves, Tartine) alongside other breakfast items. My main issue with their cafe is that their offerings are unreliable - every time I've come here, their baguettes are not available since they haven't been delivered yet, and often times there's some other things on their menu that also aren't available. From their cafe, I've tried the grilled chicken club and the Cortlandia - neither one I particularly liked, although to be fair I'm not really a big panini person to begin with (not a fan of cheese, and crusty bread). On the other hand, their breakfast sandwich was actually quite good. Have also tried their matcha latte which I would skip next time, the matcha powder wasn't mixed in super well.

Yelp
Love epicurean trader! Great store with unique goods and ingredients. Also so dependable for last minute presents and flowers on Valentine's day!

Yelp
A spot you gotta check out! So go. ;). But seriously, they have a coffee and pastry bar that also serves a divine truffle grilled cheese. Get that with a latte and thank me later. And while you're at it, shop for a present at the attached shop. Wanna make a gift basket? This is the spot. Recommendation for owners-- gift baskets to purchase that you can fill with purchases, decorate with ribbons, create something artistic with all the options here. There are gift bags available but a gift basket making station would be epic. Great gift spot!

Yelp
Super cute store, chocolate croissant was bomb. But it's the cashier that stole our hearts!

Yelp
Epicurean Trader is a true sanctuary nestled in the heart of Hayes Valley. Their salted honey latte is not just a drink--it's a revelation. As a self-proclaimed coffee connoisseur who has roamed the streets of San Francisco in search of the perfect brew, I can confidently say that Epicurean Trader takes the crown. The staff here are like old friends, always ready with a warm smile and a genuine willingness to make your day brighter. If you find yourself in Hayes Valley, do yourself a favor and make a pit stop at Epicurean Trader. It has by far the best coffee in the neighborhood, and probably even the city! Trust me, you won't regret it.

Yelp
Always a great spot to grab a quick morning coffee. They have a great salted honey latte. There new flavor is lavender too. They sell a few other drinks like a pea-flower latte and matcha latte. The workers are super kind and always make me and my partner feel welcomed. You can also get some pastries and loads of bread here supplied from great shops in SF, Tartine, Crafstman and Wolves, and others. The inside of the store is cute and clean with a bunch of unique items for drinks, cheeses, gifts, ready to make meals, and a small produce section. Definitely check this spot out.

Great food best service and great staff they make the best pastries and the owners are really nice!

Yelp
Wonder where you can get treats from Tartine and Craftsman & Wolves without trekking to the Mission / Sunset? The Epicurean Trader is your answer :) I discovered Epicurean Trader walking by in Hayes Valley and what caught my attention was actually the midnite bagel (popular SF local sourdough bagel pop up). Then, I discovered my love - the cortlandia panini. Humboldt fog goat cheese (the BEST), fig spread, and prosciutto on Tartine country bread - does that not sound delicious, are you not drooling already? Say no more - do yourself a favor and get a panini. I suggest the cortlandia but the truffle grilled cheese (gruyere, fontina, tomato, and truffle oil) sounds pretty fantastic as well. You can also help yourself to a lovely Tartine croissant, chocolate chunk cookie, morning bun (another love of mine), rebel within savory muffin, or a pack of brownies maybe?

Yelp
I stumbled upon this place by accident while wandering around Hayes Valley, but the smell of their coffee drew me in from the sidewalk like a mosquito to a lamp. The barista who has been there every time I visit is the most kind and genuine guy who makes every single customer smile when they enter and leave. While I wait for my coffee, I like to wander around the store and explore their wide variety of speciality wines, liquors, oils, spices, and nifty kitchen gadgets. They even have a butcher/deli section with some tasty meats and cheeses available for purchase too. After getting a bagel and cold brew (my usual), I love walking just a few steps over to Patricia's Green and enjoying my breakfast on the lawn. Honestly one of the best ways to start my day! Yelp
Updating this review to comment on the nice service. I appreciate the care and thoughtfulness of the staff here. Recently had a nice sandwich right outside at their lovely parklet.

Yelp
===TL;DR=== - Just step foot in here and explore ===TMI=== Honestly, randomly walked past this place with a glimpse of my peripheral, and then back tracked back into the store. And then what do you know.. that day, they had a whiskey sampling at the door! Who could say no to that? Sold. Friendly lady with a warm welcome behind this coffee bar, literally offered some whiskey tasting. Had an honor to try some Australian whiskies: double grain, single malt in red wine barrels. They were actually quite nice, distinctive differences between the 3. As the lady mentioned, they're also a beautiful bottle just in time for the holiday season and I couldn't agree more. Took a gander at the rest of the store, very neat and cute. They have a range of liquors, pairings, food, sauces, produce... you name it. Great place to explore on a whim.

Yelp
Popped into the Epicurean Trader for a drink & food and was underwhelmed. Came on a Friday morning and service was slow & they ran out of several items on the menu. Ordered a blue spirulina matcha and didn't love it - was missing the matcha flavor and just tasted like milk. Ended up enjoying my empanada but had to get my 3rd choice because they were out of stock on a lot of their options. Overall, felt like it was too pricy and would suggest going to another cafe in the area. If I was just rating the cafe, would give a 3/5...HOWEVER, the store itself is super cute and offers a wide range of unique alcohol, snacks, and food related gifts. The TLDR is come for the store not the cafe.

Yelp
Service here SUCKS. I was interested in purchasing a bottle of soju, and when it was rang up, it was $5 more than the listed price on the shelf. When asked if they could do a price adjustment because it was misadvertised, the checker agreed, but then kept going on about how the item was misplaced and "that's just how it is". OK, MOVE ON ALREADY. In the end, there was no price adjustment cuz some other checker said, "we don't adjust on alcohol". OK, why didn't the other checker know that before she agreed to it?? Oh, and then there was that pesky little tip option on the screen when I was rung up. ZERO TIPS FOR THOSE AWFUL CHECKERS. Probably the worst Epicurean Trader in the city.

Yelp
This place is fun to walk through but I would say the coffee shop closes a bit too early for my liking. Good place to pick up picnic snacks or dinner ingredients like artisanal pasta or a gift for a foodie- wide selection of chocolate. They have lots of yummy condiments like yuzu mayo. Can't stop in without grabbing a bag of Truffle chips lol
google avatar

Kyra T.

Yelp
A cute spot to grab coffee and some nice kitchen specialties too! I loved that they had macadamia nut as an alternative milk option!

Yelp
My wife and I love this place! It's also handy that it's across one of our favorite restaurants in SF (A Mano)! The selection of wines is fantastic and very reasonable. We also enjoy all the different types of olive oils, crackers, coffee, and cheeses. The staff is helpful and knowledgeable. The store is well laid out and has a very relaxed vibe. Sometimes, we make a special trip from San Mateo to shop at this store. AAA+!

Shawn C.

Yelp
Stopped by yesterday for a quick scone and a seat outside and as usual the service was helpful and friendly, the options aplenty and delicious and my seat and table spotless and comfortable. Such a nice shop ! Thanks, again ! Shawn

Yelp
A lovely little neighborhood spot to get your favorite treats. Great selection and variety
google avatar

Misha T.

Yelp
The food/coffee counter at the front is pretty neat. You can get a midnite bagel (interestingly sour) along with some very solid coffee. Probably a bit too pricy to do too often (as is everything else in het store) but if you're really hoping to start off the morning nicely, this is a great place to do it.
google avatar

Jaclyn B.

Yelp
This is the perfect spot to shop for a gift, bottle of wine, coffee or tea, or a hostess gift! Service is always friendly and attentive if you have any questions about the items, and the place is always clean and it's easy to find your way around!

Yelp
The Epicurean Trader looks fantastic as a grocery store but perhaps could be forgotten as a lunch destination. Part of the store was for grab and go items and they had a massive selection that looked amazing. There was a variety of cheeses, cured meats, drinks, and more. There was an option to order food and take it to go. Then there was an option to dine in. My friend and I were famished so we opted to dine in selecting an empty table and ordering through the QR code. I ordered a grilled cheese while my friend ordered a ham and cheese croissant. Very quickly after ordering we received our food with a person quickly coming over and putting it down and then leaving. That's fine - it's a deli style restaurant not necessarily a full service operation. It works. My friend was surprised to find that her ham and cheese croissant was served cold. She wasn't thrilled with that. Mine was very warm but it wasn't exceptional. It was filling, delicious, but something someone could easily relocate at home with a panini maker. It wasn't bad but it wasn't something I am going to rave about to other people. I think in the future I would recommend the grab and go option of the cheeses and what not and leave the sandwiches behind.

Dave N.

Yelp
Love this place! Outstanding selection of foods, condiments, and deli items. Very well curated, with the cozy feel of a European fine foods corner shop. Really wish we had a place like this in our neighborhood.

Yelp
Everything about our visit was phenomenal. One of the local bars did not sell food and as a last minute scramble we came to this market to create a charcuterie "board" for 75 people. The merchant working was incredibly thoughtful and provided best-in-class service by extending help beyond what was required of them. The produce purchased was fresh and consumed completely!! We were impressed with the products and had a variety of options in the price range that we could afford. Please support local!
google avatar

Monica M.

Yelp
Cute & special store. Definitely a place for cocktail mixing & artisanal special things! The cafe is great & there are so many things to look at in the store. I could easily get lost in looking through the shelves. Most definitely would want to hit this place up for future cocktail party ingredients! Not much more to say except - come for the cafe aspect because the food is good cafe food & come if you want to browse & possibly buy special stuff I'd consider fun!
google avatar

Sarah L.

Yelp
Shout out to the person who made this panini! Came here for the first time and the worker there was very patient with explaining the menu to me. She was fast and nice enough to split the panini in half upon request. The ingredient tasted fresh and the panini was toasted perfectly and nicely wrapped.

Yelp
I love being in Hayes Valley, so I can check out other vibrant places to go to. And I might do it after I finish work; just like when I went to Salt & Straw in Hayes St close to Laguna st. The Epicurean Trader of Hayes Valley was the kind that would never disappoint. Fine wines, chocolate bars, fresh veggies, and the rest of the groceries are what makes Epicurean Trader a one-stop shop. What I like to go for on my first check-in was free wine tasting. Still not a fan of both wine and beer, I could go for other purchase instead. Matcha latte with macadamia milk, on of the best drink at its mini café, except I hardly believe if it's ceremonial grade nor which prefecture it's originated in. The macadamia milk was excellent whether it's gluten free or made of unroasted raw macadamia nuts. I will definitely come back if I feel like buying good quality purchases. The people who work here will treat you like a good neighbor every time they noticed you.

A B.

Yelp
This place is awesome. They have to remain cold and indifferent because you have to be well off to shop here often. Rich people will ask for "a special service for me this one time" and ask for "special privileges" (be it a discount or a substitution) bc a truly rich person (and even fake rich people) are cheap and they will bug you to death with their asinine needs--if you are subservient to them even for a minute. I like that they dont hound me when i go there.

Yelp
I purchased the wrong cheap mezcal from Epicurean Trader, so I tried to exchange it five minutes later for the better one, which I've been purchasing from them for years, but they, supposedly an upscale market of artisan etc., refused, behaving as if it was some grave offense to ask for an exchange five minutes after purchasing the wrong cheap mezcal -- unopened, of course -- and so I drove to Healthy Spirits on 300 Valencia and purchased another, better mezcal -- pictured below -- which they handsold me splendidly. So long, Not Epicurean anything.

Su J.

Yelp
This little gem in the Hayes Valley neighborhood supplies all needs your household require. They offer all beverages (spirits & non) including 4-barrels coffee (my favorite!) both brewed from cafe & bagged (whole bean) in several flavor choices. One stop shopping (including fresh produce, baked goods, dairy, & deli). The staff is super friendly & knowledgeable. Gave (5) stars b/c of great customer service experience !!!

Yelp
This store has a wide selection of unique alcohol, snacks, chocolate, and so much more. Things are a little more on the pricier side, but it's a great place to find nice gifts. My 2 star rating is related to the staff. While Epicurean trader is great in terms of what they offer, I've found that most, if not all of my encounters with the people working at the register, have been unpleasant. The staff have been downright rude, impersonal and unhelpful. I went in to buy a nice bottle of alcohol with my husband, and upon my husband paying, the guy behind the register looked at me and said, "you don't have YOUR ID?" I've never been to any store where they have asked both me AND my husband for IDs, and it just seemed off. The way he asked (he could have said, "may I see your ID too"), his tone, and his overall demeanor. I tried to make a joke about it by saying that it was a complement that he asked me in the first place, but instead of being nice about it, he didn't say anything while proceeding to look at my ID. I wouldn't have minded it so much, but I clearly witnessed the transaction he had with the couple in front of me, and he did not ask BOTH of them for their ID when they purchased a bottle of alcohol. Furthermore, when I asked him whether they had gift bags for purchase, he pointed to a top shelf in the store. I walked toward it, looked up, and realized I was kidding myself by thinking I could reach it. I asked if he could grab me one and he very RUDELY responded by saying that there are some behind the register (as if I was supposed to know the landscape of the store and the fact that there were ones behind the register). Let's be real, he couldn't say that before he saw me walking toward it? I'm not one to care about writing reviews (my mom always told me that if I don't have anything nice to say, don't say anything at all), but I've had one too many encounters in here with rude staff, and this most recent encounter was the tipping point. My hope is that management fixes this or has some sort of training for their staff on basic etiquette. I love Hayes Valley and this is not the tone that should be set. For those wanting to avoid this negativity, please make your way to the Market on Market (10th and Market), where you'll find a similar and even wider selection of the same goods offered at Epicurean.

Yelp
I guess we haven't been to Hayes for a bit. This is the first time visiting this place. They sell a bunch of interesting finds and a great place to purchase a gift for someone who likes to eat or cook. The front has a small little area where you can purchase sandwiches which is made to order and there are also some beautiful flowers in the front for purchase as well. I picked up some fun unique candies for a nice gift for a friend. My husband purchases jamon from Spain. Funny thing, we went before lunch and I purchased the candies and planned on returning so we can purchase the jamon before we drove home. When we returned all the candies were gone! I am so glad I decided to purchase it during our first visit. I hope this place stands the test of time and also covid. Would love to return.

Yelp
Hayes Valley is a kinda ghosted still. I visited a few weeks back and decided to browse today. You know SF flaneur style on a covid descent(wearing a mask). Hayes Valley is standing up to the distress and so I decided to get a snack at The Epicurean Trader. The selection by the owners is really specific. They have an alcohol selection and not too many non-alcoholic drinks. I did get a non-alcoholic bellini and it was neat and a yogurt with coconut and puree. It was $6-7 for this snack and treat. They have various items in this sort of assortment and selection that is pretentious and not too intimidating. They do have a bagel and drink for $6 and a daily sandwich pick at $10. The alcohol is rare and you could stare at $50(49.99) and so here's to Hayes Valley. This opened last June.

Yelp
After an "interesting" customer service experience at the Ferry Building location, I decided to walk to this store after talking to Tyler on the phone about gift box availability. I was in the store for all of 5 minutes when he came up to me to see if I needed help. As soon as I said gift box he not only remembered my name, but helped me put together a spectacular gift. Thank you for renewing my faith in this company. Interesting point of note: the gift boxes, in store, are $30-ish more. I had a far better experience for my money with Tyler selecting my own gift bag and gifts for much cheaper.

Yelp
Nice, authentic, and cozy convenience store that serves unique breads, alcohol and everything else. I stopped into the shop while walking on Hayes Street to grab a coffee with something to eat and work. You can find parking along both sides of the road although some sections have been closed off and outdoor patios are installed for different restaurants in the area. They have a couple of tables outside so you can enjoy a quick bite or coffee while walking in the area. I ordered the espresso macchiato with a salami panini and my partner got the cold brew. The espresso macchiato was okay but the panini was enjoyable. The cold brew was rich and good as well. Overall experience: cool convenience store/coffee shop with unique products!

Yelp
This might be the most impressive of the three Epicurean Trader locations in San Francisco. Albeit new, it feels like it's been a part of the Hayes Valley neighborhood for quite some time. Well, since gentrification anyway :) It's a brilliant collection of spirits, breads, cheeses, produce, etc. Seriously, everything in this place is so well curated it makes my head spin. The best part...Tartine bread. Yep, they have it! Oh, and the spirit selection is insane! It might just be the best liquor store in all of San Francisco. Awesome sandwiches, great coffee, stellar pastries...this place is great all hours of the day. Check it out, it's impressive.

Yelp
The Hayes Valley store - Service, service, service, and very friendly and personable. The champagne selection is incredible and all the great wines they carry. They have a wide selection of unique alcohol, snacks, and chocolates to take on picnics or as gifts. The Hayes Valley Team is hands down are Gold Star! Billy

Yelp
New favorite artisanal cafe with delightful gourmet food items to gift yourself (or friends) to enjoy! Both Tartine, Craftsman and Wolves pastries are delectable! I like the "top shelf" quality selection of Epicurean treats, savory and sweet! Multiple SF locations, Union Street has a nice variety to satisfy your yummy cravings!

Fred B.

Yelp
You can absolutely feel the love right as soon as you walk in. A big smile before, during and after the transaction. Awesome products for great prices especially for Hayes Valley. Extremely knowledgeable on product details. *Must tries* *La Maridona (empanada) * The prosciutto panini *Pre made deli sandwiches (refrigerator next to the front door) All heated or unheated. Shout out to Arturo and crew! Please keep up the much needed positive energy!

Yelp
An awesome spot in the Hayes Valley to shop local! I just so happened to stumble inside this urban shop while I was walking my dog and I loved it! I saw someone else with their dog inside and so that immediately drew me into the store. I was immediately amazed when I saw the wall of alcohol and then turned around and saw a bunch of products made locally! They also have a bunch of vegan friendly items and dog biscuits up front! My kind of store!
