How Food Deserts Are Inextricably Linked to Racism in America | Eater

"A bustling Saturday farmers market where rows of white tents offer locally grown and freshly harvested goods — from bright, misshapen tomatoes and plump blueberries to brochures advertising grass-fed cows and pasture-raised chickens — and vendors sell a wide range of homemade desserts, including hand-sized sweet-potato pies and doughnuts the size of a head." - Randi Pink

So glad the farmer’s market is opening up during the week. I’m never able to make it on Saturdays, but today (Tuesday) my family and I had an awesome time. Vendors were really nice and took time explaining their products. Can’t wait to visit again!

Google
This was my first summer trip to pepper place ... Wow !!! I was impressed. I wished I had came earlier in the day. The vendors were awesome . Mostly a great selection of fruit and vegetables... I was impressed greatly... I will be back next week at 7a.m. LOL !!! It's was great but hot !! Going to bring friends next time...,!!! Again AWESOME !!

Google
Produce is from local growers who live within an hour of the market. The vibe is ❤️ 😍, "real chill". Just remember like many markets of this sort it is VERY VERY busy and crowded (think concert but for food:). Speaking of which, there's now live music! Too, normally if you're not there by 7 am when it opens, maybe 7:30, you will be driving and circling around to find a parking spot.

Google
Pepper Place has been a mainstay of our spring and summer for about 20 years now. Before we moved downtown, we would drive from Hoover to the farmers market multiple times each year. Now starting our 8th spring living downtown, we make the 5 minute drive to Pepper Place pretty much every Saturday that we are in town. From fresh strawberries, to tasty boiled peanuts, to the delicious mushrooms, we buy wonderful produce from our favorite farmers every week. It’s one of the reasons we moved downtown, and still one of our favorite outings.

Google
Pepper Place is one of our favorite things to go to on a beautiful Saturday morning. Fantastic variety of vendors! We always leave with sourdough bread, chocolate croissants and chicken salad. This is a must!

Google
Freakin' outstanding! Produce was BEAUTIFUL! Breakfast choices were 'a plenty! (Nice to find a Bloody Mary!) Prices seemed fair enough... I wish we were more local so we could have taken advantage of the delicious looking fruits & veggies! As an aside - this place is 1000% better than an airport terminal for people watching. LOL! When baseball brings us back to the area, we'll return to the market!

Google
I’m so happy I drove to Birmingham for the day to check out this fantastic Farmers Market! They have two streets of vendors selling everything from produce, flowers, decor, jewelry, and delicious food. You can also enjoy live music and a cooking demo!

Yelp
Love visiting this farmers market when I'm in town. They have fresh produce, flowers, veggies and fruit. We always stop by Homewood Gourmet for the chicken salad and pecans. I really enjoy seeing all the vendors. Highly recommend if you are in the area.

Yelp
The one thing that should be on everyone's summer bucket list- Visit the Farmer's Market at Pepper Place!! Great for people watching, watching the live demos, grabbing flowers or whatever fruit/veggies that are in season! All of the vendors are nice & it's true the early bird gets the worm because if you get their too late, some things might be sold out! Also go early to avoid the crowds.

Yelp
OMG I have missed coming out to the Farmers Market! When I arrived around 10am, it was SO packed. I looked around a bit and enjoyed the sights and sounds. I was only here to grab some local honey to help combat against my undefeated allergies! Mission accomplished. I plan to not say away so long and I'm looking forward to returning soon.

Yelp
There are too many people who come here just to post their iced coffee on Instagram that they ruin it for everyone. Everyone who comes out is unaware and privileged. They walk as slow as possible and block the walkways. They bring their dogs and let the leash slack out 20 feet so the dog can bother everyone and get their nose in all the food. A homeless guy is always soliciting playing bad music and now he is falsely claiming to run an animal shelter, keeping all profits for himself. There is never live music anymore and there is no seating to stop and rest. Over crowded and overrun. Whoever manages this refuses to expand the space or place vendors more efficiently to decrease congestion. This place is truly hell on earth.

Yelp
I was told this is the premiere Farmers Market in Birmingham, here was my experience AMBIANCE: Parking | Street parking and plaza parking for stores that are closed on the weekend. I didn't have any issues. Vibes | It's not in Downtown Birmingham, which is nice, so it's not too crowded. Pepper Place is a nice local plaza of restaurants and arts. On Farmers Market days, I've heard there are over 50 vendors. On this rainy day, I got about 30. There's live music playing to keep you company. CUSTOMER SERVICE Great! Friendly people and passionate about their craft from the arts, produce, and food. OVERALL: 4 Stars. I enjoyed my slow Saturday morning here. Great vendors, nice people, and a pleasant experience. If you're looking for a local consistent Saturday gem. Be sure to check this out. Advice: * It could be slower, and they can have fewer vendors on slower days

Yelp
I absolutely love farmers markets. And this one is the cream of the crop! What's not to love here? They have fresh, Alabama grown fruits and veggies, farm raised meats, dairy products, hand cut flowers, baked goods, cooked goods, handmade goods- It's all good! They host a local chef weekly that demonstrates their specialty and there's live music to go along with your shopping pleasure. Warning- Have a budget in mind before you go. It's easy to overspend here when you see the many choices of all the wonderful products that these small business offer.

Yelp
MADE IN ALABAMA! The Farmers Market at Pepper Place is a wondrous watering hole for Alabamians both big and small! It occurs every Saturday right in the middle of Pepper Place! There is a lot of samples, farmers and many art displays too. My biggest suggestion would be to get there as early as possible as parking can be a NIGHTMARE if you are not prepared. We started the morning off at Red Cat Coffee then walked around. Courtney got a Hot Dog from Pops and I got a delicious mason jar of raspberry jam that I am excited to spread onto croissants/toast! One thing that I absolutely love about Alabamians is that we prefer to support small businesses rather than the generic brands. So even if we might need to spend the extra couple dollars on something, it is well worth it at the end of the day! A little goes a long way!

Madelyn W.

Yelp
Great vendor selection, lovely people, family and pet friendly. Beautiful way to spend your Saturday morning. Plenty of parking nearby.

Hannah G.

Yelp
Loved the atmosphere! Im a sucker for a good market. Tons of vendors! My favorite was the bakery and the farms that were selling fresh vegetables! Just amazing and wished we had something like this closer to home.

Yelp
I love pepper place. There's always so many wonderful vendors and it's such a great place to see all the cute pups! My favorite is to get there early and grab breakfast while I browse

Clementine A.

Yelp
A super fun Saturday brunch option! I love getting fresh pastries and coffee for brunch at the Pepper Place Market and browsing the various vendors. This weekend (like most weekends) I happily got a butter croissant from the Hinkel's Bakery stand, and grabbed a coffee to drink along with it. Hinkel's has, hands down, the best croissants in Birmingham. They are crispy on the outside and soft on the inside, and fairly large for only $4. Also, their staff are always kind and efficient--even despite the cold, drizzly weather we experienced this weekend. If you are looking for somewhere fun to eat, hang out with friends, and/or shop on a Saturday morning, I highly recommend going to the market and trying out Hinkel's!

Yelp
It's always a fun outing. Lots of good food, veggies and dessert delights! Did I mention that people bring their four legged shoppers? They make the experience even more fun! Plus the shops of Pepper Place and nearby restaurants make for a day out that you will definitely enjoy. Take the whole family and enjoy!

Yelp
We still try to make it by there weekly. We miss sometimes. I like the peaches and this time I could only find one vendor that had them. My wife likes the pecans from our normal stop. I got their chicken salad today. We made another stop and got giant cinnamon rolls. She got a ice brewed coffee from Red Cat sat out in the common area. Red Cat has a brick and mortar right by the market. Every shop has pleasant personnel working at each station. I do like the atmosphere of shopping in the outdoor area. Also they do have regulars but they do have some that may be there for a one time visit.
google avatar

James F.

Yelp
This is a relatively small market, but there are a number of independent farmers who come to sell their produce. It's a great place to come and meet with a small town feel.

Yelp
Saturday Morning at Pepper Place Farmer's Market Rating: I finally made it to Pepper Place Farmer's Market. My primary goal was to find some green plums-Mission:Accomplished! Upon arriving at the market, I was immediately captivated by the lively atmosphere. The bustling crowd, vibrant colors, and delightful aromas created an invigorating ambiance. The market was abuzz with local vendors showcasing their finest produce, and it was evident that the community spirit thrived here. Beyond the green plums (), the Pepper Place Farmer's Market had so much more to offer. I couldn't resist exploring the other stalls, which showcased a wide variety of locally grown produce, artisanal goods, and homemade treats. From fresh vegetables and aromatic herbs to artisan cheeses and baked goods, the market was a treasure trove of culinary delights. What impressed me the most was the strong sense of community fostered at Pepper Place Farmer's Market. Engaging with vendors and fellow market-goers created a warm and welcoming environment. I even met a vendor from Winterboro, Alabama! My visit to Pepper Place Farmer's Market on a Saturday morning to secure the bag (of green plums) was an absolute delight. Maybe the guys will forgive me for waking them up at 7AM to make it to the market!

Yelp
If you are looking for locally grown and crafted fruits, veggies and prepared foods, this is the market for you. Gets very busy, so go early to find a parking spot! Lots of people walking from all over with their dogs and I even saw one person walking their cat on a leash! So many wonderful vendors here! We bought locally grown lettuce, chef's mix mushrooms, asparagus, salsa, baguettes, coffee, croissants and danish. All of this made a fine meal when we got home to go with our steaks! This place is a feast for the eyes and one of the first places I'll visit again on my next trip!

Yelp
What a great way to spend a Saturday afternoon. A lively, bustling market loaded down with so many good things you'll end up needing to take stuff to the car and come back for more. Jams, honey, sausages, fruits and veggies and a variety of other things unique to the Birmingham area. Local farmers bringing the freshest of foods to one spot so that you can drink, shop, sample and listen to a band playing in the background. Great stuff, fair prices, friendly people and happiness all around. Definitely a must visit.

Amber H.

Yelp
One of the best farmers markets! Highly recommend to take your family and enjoy a great Saturday morning!

Yelp
Have been here almost 4 weekends in a row! Absolutely love the neighborhoods such as Crestwood, coming into this place. There is always an array of items varying from mushrooms to candles and Thai food and seafood. Love the stall that sells the pink oyster mushrooms, the sausage wrapped in bacon, and the fresh organic veg. Haven't tried the artisan bakery one yet as the line is ridiculously long. If you don't think you are the farmers market type of person, this place will prove you wrong. Pepper market makes me want to move to Crestwood so badly and make the 1 hour commute to work.

Yelp
A trip to Pepper Place is something one should definitely do while visiting Birmingham along with a trip to Vulcan Park, The Civil Right's Institute, Botanical Gardens, The Galleria, Oak Mt. State Park, Railroad Park and of course visiting a few bbq and local food joints. It's called Pepper place because it's located near or at the old Dr. Pepper factory. Each Saturday pending good weather it's open from 7am-12pm. Park where you can find a spot and get there before 10 am if possible. Uber is also a good option. By 10 am this place gets super crowded and kinda hot. On a good day you can expect, a bunch of veggies, fruits, flowers, live music, awesome food trucks, donuts and hotdogs, free samples of cheese, salsa, jellies and friendly local vendors. Support local venders and buy from them if you can. They work super hard. People come here with their pets, friends and family. It can get a bit crowded and frustrating when you can't get to the vendors you want to purchase from so come early before all the UAB students wake up parading around with their flannel, sunflowers and Piper & Leaf masons full of tea for the perfect Insta pics.
google avatar

Rick T.

Yelp
Arrive early for the best parking spots and shorter coffee lines in the shops close by the market. Bring a cooler as a few vendors offer cheeses and meats to take home. Really good granola spot called Market 46 Craft Bakery as you enter the market two bags were about twenty bucks. Tried a nice house made boudin sausage with creole mustard on fresh bread as we listened to live music as we sip lavender lemon kombucha on the steps as all the tables were filled. Wish the market was little more opened up as it got super crowded but all in all a great spot to visit.
google avatar

Alex R.

Yelp
I like coming here when I have time. There are so many great stalls selling all kinds of provisions. I like to get a chocolate croissant on fresh made sausage biscuit as I walk around. By the time I'm done eating I've made it to the Steel City pops cart where I get a chocolate ice cream. I love to get the fresh fruit strawberries, blueberries, peaches and interesting vegetables. All grown on Alabama farms in Shelby Co. They also have art and craft booths. I say go visit and find what you like about this place. There are lots of things to choose from.
google avatar

Nicki N.

Yelp
Came out with a group of friends to enjoy Breakin' Bread on a Sunday afternoon. We go every year and this venue for it wasn't the best... it doesn't take away from the Saturday market... it's always great selection and lots to see. But for this event it seemed way too cramped to give the best food experience from the participating restaurants... hard to move through the crowd so I missed the space of Sloss Furnace and Railroad Park. The food was good but as far as having room to enjoy it, not the best.... seems like you had to spring for VIP for that. I hope they don't use this spot for it anymore because we will probably pass at the price. But for what its normally used for--the farmer's market-- it's still super cool.
google avatar

Samantha G.

Yelp
So perfect and cute. Lots of dogs walking around. Plenty of local options to choose from!

Yelp
My humans took me to Pupper Place on Saturday morning. It's a great place to dog watch. I recommend getting there early, it gets nose-to-tail crowded by 9:00. And really hot in the summer months. The highlight of my day was the strawberry ice cream from the Fetch food truck. It was terrific! Many vendors had balls on display that were just out of reach. That was driving me crazy. The flower vendor (by the meow storefront) had a water bowl that was filled with a block of ice. I licked it.. I love Pupper Place. Drag your owners out of bed next Saturday and meet me there. Signed, Macey the Golden Pup
google avatar

Jody T.

Yelp
This place can get a bit crowded with the dogs and people and strollers but it's a great place to be on Saturday mornings. Tons of vendors and variety. The prices are steeper than smaller markets but what you get is a more diverse offering. Jewelry, household wares, ready to eat treats, drinks, plus farm fresh meats, eggs, and veggies. They have clean restrooms and plenty to see and do with the kids.
google avatar

Cassie B.

Yelp
Bang for your buck: 9/10 Quality: 10/10 Service: 10/10 Ambiance/Location: 10/10 Overall: 9/10 Great selection and vibes! We bought some of the best peaches I've ever had! Definitely busy, but no more crowded than a typical large-scale Farmers market. We're a little disappointed that some of the vendors we'd seen on their Instagram page were either not in attendance or we just simply couldn't locate them. But still, they had a great selection of artisan goods and farm fresh produce!
google avatar

Judy A.

Yelp
A great farmer's market! The bread and pastries were delicious. I had to try both places here. The vegetables look great. A variety of local honey available
google avatar

Katie J.

Yelp
Pepper Place Farmers Market is AWESOME! I've been going for years and love to take my family. My kids love petting all the dogs people bring, dancing to bluegrass music, and getting a special treat from Steel City Pops or the Donut truck! I enjoy buying locally grown, gorgeous produce, meats, cheeses, and canned items like jellies and pickles. You can sample items from most vendors or fill up with a great breakfast from Homewood Gourmet or Continental Bakery. The only complaint I have are the CROWDS! However, if you go early you miss most of them!

Yelp
This was my first visit to Pepper Place Farmers Market. So first of all , something that isn't easy to do, they live up to the hype. This is easily the largest farmer's market I have been to. Very well organized with tons of options. Fresh fruit and veggies can be found at every turn. Some places have their specialties (Peaches and tomatoes stand out) while others have a large selection. Prices range from very reasonable to good. Especially when you factor in the freshness it's hard to beat. Not wanting to have to carry your stuff around, Shipt, offers an amazing service! Bring your things to the Veggie Valet service they offer and they will store it for you. Don't worry they will tag your stuff and give you something indicating what is yours. When you are all wrapped up, go grab your car and drive up to the Veggie Valet. Give them your tag and they will load your car up for you. Did I forget to mention this awesome service is free? In addition to all the fresh fruits and vegetables they have several made local items for sale. From custom woodworking and art to salsa and jams/jellies you can find all sorts of things to spend your money on. If you get hungry they have a handful of food booths/trucks serving breakfast/brunch/lunch foods to cater to what you are in the mood for. Also, there are plenty of restaurants in the area if you want to go sit and relax for a few minutes. Overall, this place is really well organized and populated with so many friendly people it's hard to beat.

Yelp
Have been coming here for 2 years now and finally i have seen enough to review :) this place keeps getting bigger and bigger. One of the main reasons we come is it is very dog friendly and all the produce is very fresh. You can find anything from home made soaps to jewelry to fresh corn on the cob.. the one thing you wont find is cowboy candy... (pickled jalapeños)we have been on the look out for this elusive product to no avail. Folks have heard of this awesome product, but no one knows where or who makes it locally. So if you are looking for fresh produce this is your place, also if you like large crowds with parking a mile away this is your place too lol. And expect to see many dog breeds :) my favorite part.
google avatar

Michael H.

Yelp
What's more local then Pepper Place Market? Not much. This place offers a range of products from fresh veggies and soups to skin care and clothing accessories all made from local small business. If you have not been yet it's a must to kick off a great Saturday Morning in Birmingham.
google avatar

Simon M.

Yelp
The farmers market is a great community initiative which occurs at Pepper Place from the spring to the fall in Saturday mornings. This is a place where you get authentic farm to table and support our local Alabama farmers. This is where to go to get the freshest in season produce. In addition to the farmers there are local craft, merchants of all sorts from jewellery, crafts, clothing and many others. There are cooking demonstrations which are very fun and entertaining. You are bound to find something you love amongst the stalls. There is plenty of ready to eat vendors if you want a snack. Pet friendly for furry friends and a few speciality pet vendors. It's popular so prepare to have to park and walk unless you get lucky with a spot nearby. It is also crowded so those whom don't deal well will want to come earlier which is when the best items are still available. Till next time

Yelp
One of my favorite Saturday morning traditions... This market has everything from the best salsa ever- After Midnight Salsa to the freshest veggies/herbs - Jones Valley Teaching Farm!! The perfect place to go pick up some grocery essentials and share good times when friends over Red Cat Coffee with live music, amazing fresh breakfast burritos while supporting our local communicates! Did I mention TOYOTA is there with vehicles on display too?!! So awesome!!! #aftermidnight #jonesvalleyteachingfarm #redcatcoffee #toyota #asianbama
google avatar

Boris S.

Yelp
Local farmers market on Saturday in Lakeview Birmingham and so much more. We try to go every Saturday and enjoy iced coffee from Red Diamond Cafe booth while grabbing some fresh vegetables and fruits. This is one of the most popular farmers markets in Birmingham especially during the warm months. You can enjoy a lot of local shops, crafts, pastries and if you bike there Redemptive Cycles offers free bike storage/parking.
google avatar

Chelsea L.

Yelp
As out of towners we were little out of place here, but it doesn't change the fact it was a very well put together local market. The place with the breakfast burritos was not serving them that day, and we were starving. Definitely think they could benefit from more food trucks and places to sit. It was also very crowded, lots of dogs which was great.
google avatar

Kimberly K.

Yelp
If you haven't made it to the Pepper place markets on a Saturday morning then you are totally missing out! You can get everything from fresh produce, homemade soap, kombucha, jewelry from local designers , live music, live cooking demonstrations and more. It's one of my favorite things to do in Birmingham. Dog friendly! Misting machines on those hot Alabama days Kid and family friendly Bike racks available
google avatar

Chad S.

Yelp
Can say enough good about this place!! Now an entertainment district too!! So great food, good drinks, relaxed atmosphere all close by convenient. I visit hear often from hop city to ovenbird or I cantina, the red cat everything here in this location is great if you haven't been?? Why not??
google avatar

Tracie P.

Yelp
Pepper Place Farmer's Market is the must-stop farmer's market in the Birmingham area. The market features a wide array of vendors from all across Alabama. It's a one stop shop for apparel, pastries, vegetables, meats, honey, and even dog treats. The market does get crowded quickly, so it's best to go early. Masks are required for vendors and patrons.
google avatar

Camdyn C.

Yelp
I love love love Pepper Place!! It's my favorite thing to do on Saturday mornings in the spring and summer. This farmers market literally has something for everyone. From fresh veggies and fruits to handmade goods, they've got it covered. Food trucks and tents are always serving up the best food & there's always live music playing. Homemade pies, dips and salsas are always a good take home! They have it all. Popsicle stands & balloon twisters will keep the kiddos entertained :) if you live in Birmingham, you have to put Pepper Place down on your list of things to do. Just be prepared to walk! A farmers market in the middle of the city doesn't have a whole lot of parking! Pets are welcome, just make sure you bring them on a leash!!
google avatar

Dawn V.

Yelp
What a great way to spend a Saturday!!!! ( and a whole lot of money too!) It's not at all cheap, but I love an outdoor market with plenty of food artisans and live music. It was a hot summer day so we settled on a giant mason jar of cold tea and a seat to watch the Johnny Cash-sound-alike... Fun morning! We tried donuts from Hero and a pop-tart from another stand... All unique and tasty. The Pepper tea jars are tempting on a hot day but we spent $25 total on iced tea, which is silly really. The full mason jars are $10 each and $5 for refills. But I guess we now have souvenir glasses to take back to Detroit.
google avatar

Marissa W.

Yelp
Going to the market at pepper place is such a wonderful way to spend a Saturday morning. My partner and I have been going for years. It is a great way to support local businesses and farms. My favorite part though less often with Covid, is trying free samples. We always come home with a good mix of veggies, sauces, and sweet treats
google avatar

Cheryl M.

Yelp
Love Pepper Place! So many wonderful stands. So much to buy! I actually left today without being able to carry another thing. I bought strawberries, peaches, tomatoes, pies, cheesecake, and a bow knife! Also got a great tie dye dress for the 11 year old. So many fruit and vegetable stands but also hand made goods, baked goods, dog treats, etc. We stopped for breakfast on the way but there was someone selling breakfast at Pepper Place plus the Heavenly Donuts truck was there as well so we could have eaten there. This could be a regular Saturday morning thing for me. Brought my dog and he loved all the sights, smells, and other dogs. Prices are reasonable. Well worth a trip. You won't be disappointed! See you there, next Saturday!
google avatar

Ryan M.

Yelp
A great place to spend a southern Saturday morning. Come before it gets too hot and all the good stuff gets taken home! There are always food trucks, plenty of farmer vendors with fresh produce, creative artworks, live music, food samples and so much more. I make it a point to stop by heavenly doughnuts food truck for an apple fritter. YUM. You can get coffee at The Red Cat as well. There are different vendors every week so you can go back and find something new every time!
google avatar

Nicole S.

Yelp
Love coming here every Saturday! They have the best produce! There is always live music and great vendors. I always stop at Hero Doughnuts to pick up a chocolate donut! Such a great place for local vendors to showcase their products!
google avatar

Linda R.

Yelp
This is a fun place on a Saturday morning. There are all sorts of jams, jellies, fresh breads, fruits and vegetables for sale. You can also buy jewelry, clothing and plants. There is also live music as well as a DJ.
google avatar

Jake M.

Yelp
I go here every Saturday. There are the different markets and vendors and my favorite food. Def a stop to make in bham
google avatar

Jennifer L.

Yelp
This is my favorite Saturday tradition, and a must-see if you are in the Birmingham area. Parking can be a bit tricky, but the key is to get there early to get a good spot, beat the crowds, and beat the heat. There are public restrooms to use. My favorite stops: Hinkel's for pastries and fresh-baked bread, After Midnight Salsa Company, and Susan Gordon Pottery. Produce is great and seasonal. We usually do a walkthrough first before we make our produce purchases to make sure we get the best pick.
google avatar

Mark B.

Yelp
As a local Iowan, we take our farmers markets seriously. This is an absolute must for locals and visitors alike. Located on the site of an old Dr. Pepper Factory, they had a wide variety of fruits, vegetables, teas, and other treasures to buy. The market itself was laid out well, and there were air-conditioned shops and public spaces opened with bathroom facilities. Parking was a little hairy, which is to be expected at such a popular event. Building and tents provided a nice amount of shade for this sunburn-friendly individual. If I lived in B'Ham, I would make this a weekly ritual.
