Where to Celebrate St. Patrick’s Season all Month Long in San Diego | Eater

"The Field is an authentic, turn-of-the-century Irish pub — in 1998, the owners say they shipped it from Ireland piece-by-piece and set up shop in the Gaslamp Quarter. Rustic wood details and a cozy stone fireplace create a relaxing ambiance, while traditional Irish fare warms you from the inside out. Standouts include Whiskey Chicken Boxty, a potato pancake that’s cooked on the griddle, then topped with Irish cheddar, mushrooms, and Jameson cream sauce. The bar also serves up six kinds of Jameson along with The Field’s housemade Jameson peppermint infusion; it’s the perfect place to find a new favorite." - Mary Beth Abate

Ambiance was cozy, a little loud but you are still able to have conversations. Server was friendly and so was the waiter. It was our first time in an irish place so We tried the sampler plate for my boyfriend and I. The beef shepherds pie was exquisite, hearty and savory. Could easily get it again and again. Corned beef not my fave, meat got too dry too fast and the cabbage was just ok. Now the chiken item in the sampler was a little more simple but good as well, creamy. The beef stew was more on the super savory almost salty side, it came with champ which is like mashed potatoes. Super yummy. Overall great experience. Would come here again for all of it!

Google
This was our 2nd time, and the food was just as wonderful as last time. Make sure you come hungry! So many great things to try. My favorite is the Irish sampler, a little bit of everything. The fish was light & perfectly cooked (the tartar sauce with the kick of dill is how I make it at home & amazing), the bangers & mash were spot on. We completely over ate to try dessert & it was also wonderfully delicious.

Google
I absolutely loved the ambience of this pub - very cozy and rustic. My friends and I shared several plates. I enjoyed the Irish Sampler plate which let's you try four different entrees. From that I thought the Chicken Boxty was most tasty. And I couldn't go to a pub without ordering fish and chips which were very good. I was not disappointed.

Google
Best Irish pub I've been to in the US. Great food, beer, playlist, and atmosphere. Has the Kilkenny by Smithwick's on draught, and even total wine doesn't carry it. Food was tasty and had a great selection of it, not just standard American fare with a couple obligatory offerings. I had the Guinness beef stew (pictured), and it was wonderful. The other in my party got the lamb shepherds pie, which was also quite good. Only 2 complaints: Draught beers were suuuper expensive ($9). I can understand this for the odd imports, but for a Guinness? Also, too few mashed potatoes for my stew, although the bread on the side was fantastic, so I won't whine too much.

Google
Came here on a Thursday and got a nicely poured Guinness. It was solid but nothing beat the creaminess of a Guinness from Europe. The bartender was chill though. Came here a 2nd time and we had a full dinner. We ordered the Chicken Boxty and the Shepard’s Pie. Really nice food! Also our server was an absolute workhorse!

Google
We were in town for a cruise and wanted some Guinness Pints. Found this place and it was packed inside, but we found a spot outside and we enjoyed the evening just hanging out and people watching!! Will for sure visit again when I travel to SD!

Heather S.

Google
I absolutely loved it here! I'd just returned from a trip to Dublin two weeks prior, and I felt like I was back in Eire. My Bailey's coffee was a generous pour, I walked out just a bit unbalanced. (Then again I'm a lightweight.) Service is fast and friendly, and sitting outside people watching was a great way to pass the afternoon. The interior is just as it should be, cozy and a little bit dark. I'd be a regular did I live in the area. Absolutely recommended!

Google
All day Irish Full Breakfast is where it’s at. Probably a little lacking flavour in terms of the bacon and the eggs but other people I was with had a good experience with the burgers and chicken meals. That said the black pudding was not bad for the US… of which I had extra. Fair prices as well. Love the wood filled interior and booths… gives that old pub feel.

Yelp
The Field Irish Pub never misses! I ordered an Irish coffee and it was sooo good. The mix was perfect -- the whiskey and hot coffee at the bottom with the cold Irish cream on top made every sip amazing. That warm-and-cold contrast was next level. It was so smooth you could hardly taste the alcohol, just pure, balanced flavor. Plus, the place was super decorated for December -- super festive and cozy, which made the whole experience even better. One of the best Irish coffees I've ever had!

Yelp
So much fun the 1st weekend we had to go back again the next weekend we were in Downtown. The staff is truly special and so awesome. Food is great (I highly recommend the Irish chicken boxty with Jameson cream sauce) and the caramel apple bread pudding is indulgent and simply amazing. Drinks of course are great as well. My favorite is the Irish Old Fashioned (has a splash of Guinness) not too sweet and hits the spot. I love they have built in pour spout for the Jameson too. There is seating downstairs, an upstairs (where on occasion a live band plays and is awesome) and some seating outside. I haven't been to Ireland yet but when I walk into the Field it is exactly what I would imagine walking into a pub in Ireland would feel like. The staff makes you feel welcome and like you are at home form the moment you step in, to the moment you step out. Always a great time!!!

Yelp
Not very assuming entrance but the inside was nicely decorated and had seating for various group sizes and a bar. My party came here for drinks and bread pudding. Waitress was nice and friendly and bread pudding was a little too dense but it was warm and came with whipped cream and caramel. Their menu looks good so I would like to come back for corned beef or shepherd's pie.

Yelp
THE FIELD IRISH PUB @ DOWNTOWN 5th AVE Parking is available for street, but I'd definitely recommend ubering for a night out to avoid traffic and finding tight spots for parking. I came to this Irish bar on Saturday night at around 10:30 PM. It was pretty crowded, but we ended up finding a spot in the place. We ordered their Guinness beer, as it was very good quality. I'm not really a beer person, but everyone at my table ended up getting it and my boyfriend really loves this spot because of how high-quality of the beer they have. each beer is about $10 and they have it in a really nice glass. I also love the decor that they had like these curtains and plates that said like bread it was very like you were literally in Ireland. The service was also really great. We ended up getting a lot of beers from the bars, so it was really nice to the servers! overall, I would definitely come back to this spot, I really liked the vibe of this place as well as how high-quality of the beer they have.

Yelp
Fun Irish pub with everything you would expect. Good Irish food and drink and a lively crowd with attentive waitstaff. Had a Guinness and the Shepherds Pie. Hard to screw up a Guinness and the pie was very good.
google avatar

Yelp
Incredible pub atmosphere at The Field - eat, drink, and be merry! Holiday decorations abound as well. Service was great as were the cocktails - we tried the Irish old fashioned, pixie spritz, snowflake martini, and whiskey spiked eggnog. All were excellent and sure to get you feeling warm in no time. Will be back to try the various Irish food offerings (shepherds pie with beef or lamb, Guinness beef stew, etc) and more cocktails in the future!

Yelp
I'm a big fan of Irish bars and this place feels like a typical bar you would find in Dublin. Great vibes and service. The bartender made us feel like regulars.
google avatar

Renee I.

Yelp
We stopped in for a quick dinner and sat at the window in upstairs so we could look out on the street. It was great. Our server, Leigh, was very friendly and helpful despite us being the only people she had come upstairs to wait on. I got the Tito's touchdown drink and it was delicious. Our scotch egg was large and yummy. Fish and chips were also delicious but my bacon blue cheese burger was just okay. The meat tasted gamey to me.
google avatar

Lauren J.

Yelp
Enjoyed the fish and chips for dinner and really liked sitting inside. It was cozy and had a nice pub vibe with a cool bar and Irish music playing. They had large TVs with the baseball game on too. The service was friendly and attentive, and the food came out quickly so didn't wait long at all. The food was hot and obviously freshly made. The tartar sauce was lemony and unique. Would recommend if you want some pub food or drinks!

Yelp
If you're looking for a classic Irish pub, this is the spot! My husband and I just happen to be passing by when we heard classic Irish music coming from the doors and open windows. We decided to give it a try and sat at the bar for a beer. We absolutely loved the ambience and coziness this place had to offer. Wanting to try their food, we came back the next evening for dinner and sat upstairs in front of the large open window that looked onto the street. Our waitress is very friendly and suggested a few things for us to try. The food was amazing! We got the Irish sampler and classic fish and chips to share. My favorite was the beef stew from the sampler. With the music playing, and the coziness of the upstairs room, we felt like we were dining in a different country. What a gem of a pub. We can't wait to come back.

Yelp
AHH omg what a cute little pub I loved coming in here today, definitely started getting into the St. Pattys day spirit and I love it!! I wish I lived in San Diego I would definitely be frequenting often! Brendan our server was so kind and had great conversation which I always appreciate so much from a bar, I know it gets super busy and it can be a lot so even the smallest gestures means the most! I'm obsessed with the potato skins, I immediately looked up a recipe to try when I get home to try and recreate these. I'm so sad I was already almost full when these arrived because I could've easily ate the whole thing if we had come to the Field first!! My only wish is that they would have some sort of game set up for customers like pool or foosball!!! Otherwise so so fun and service was excellent! Will definitely come back when I visit SD again!
google avatar

Rina H.

Yelp
I'm giving this place four stars because it's a really cute atmosphere and vibe inside. Pros are that they have a really good potato leek soup! It was really comforting like a hug in a bowl. Unfortunately, I was not a fan of the shepherds pie and you would hope that this would be a great dish it's an Irish pub and this was one of the popular items. Service was good and the waitress was friendly.
google avatar

Rachel T.

Yelp
Amazing chicken pot pie and fish and chips. We also had purple Guinness which was sweet and wonderful. People there were amazing!

Yelp
We sat at the top bar for drinks. The ambience is casual. Attentive and friendly staff. Have to comeback for the taste of bread pudding .
google avatar

Wendy S.

Yelp
I love a good old fashion Irish pub. Search them out while traveling and any place I am. Love the vibe inside!! Unfortunately we chose to sit outside and missed the true ambiance of what an Irish pub should be. The Irish stew was a favorite amongst our group. The chicken boxty was really good also. Felt some of the other things we tried needed a bit more flavor. Wasn't omg amazing, but wasn't terrible! I would say definitely sit inside to get the whole feel of it.
google avatar

Mark C.

Yelp
Nice place I don't drink but the Brussel Sprouts are good. The staff very attentive and the decor is what I would expect in Ireland.
google avatar

Yelp
This was one of our go to places when our lived in San Diego but we have not been here for probably over 10 years! In town for a work trip and not willing to eat the sushi that had been standing - a group of us headed here and it was a great pick! Still has the same charm with the cute Irish interior whiz is really fun and inviting! Great service throughout the night and some good British favorites! Had the fish n chips with a side of curry sauce and it was so good ! Everyone loved the food and a great time was had by all! Still the salad great place I remember
google avatar

Leilani M.

Yelp
The curb appeal is what drew us in. Totally loved the tavern look, like Robin Hood, Robert snow or Hagrid was going to walk-in and shake off some snow at any second. Wooden tables and stone fireplace with dimly lit interior was a warm spot to enjoy some drinks. We decided to share some chicken tenders for an after taco snack along with our drinks. Great choices! Food was nice & fresh. Crispy exterior and juicy chicken. Would definitely recommend stopping by when visiting the Gaslamp district.

Yelp
My first visit to this establishment was on December 31, 2024. I went around lunchtime, and was pleasantly surprised to learn that they had an Irish New Year's celebration early in the day, followed by a more traditional one later. Staff was very accommodating, place was very busy. It's very interesting Decor; the wood was taken from an Irish pub, transported across the sea, and reassembled. So it's truly authentic. I had the Irish sampler which is four small samples. They include corned beef and cabbage, shepherds pie, boxty , and beef stew. They were all delicious. Service was fast, prices are very reasonable. I cannot comment on parking because I walked here. Sorry, folks, I had trouble getting lighting for my photographs.

Yelp
The Field Irish Pub located in the San Diego Gaslamp area was chosen by a friend as a spot to enjoy a couple of pints and a meal while catching up, and having been there several years before, I welcomed the idea. Upon arrival we were met by a young lady at the entrance and she promptly allowed us to enter when we chose to sit at the bar counter. "End of pleasant experience!". Once seated the bartender was reluctant to assist us, somewhat brash, and unfriendly. We ordered pints, and were rushed to select our meals. I selected the Cornbeef Sandwich, and my friend chose the Fish 'N Chips which I passed on because I had previously had fish a few days prior. The food arrived and the french fries were raw, and tasteless, and I was reluctant to return them due to the bartender's mood. In addition, I could not wrap my head around how you could toast one side of one half of the sandwich and the other three sides be raw and soggy. Terrible sandwich. My friend enjoyed the fish but did not consume the fries. I should have given my sandwich to the basset hound sitting in the lap of the gentleman next to me because the dog was very interested. Took some photos, and we departed. Will NEVER return

Yelp
We recently had reservations for a large group of us here. We were purposely dressed up to the nines in 20-40's theme. This was a fun Irish night out with my Dapper Club friends. They serve Irish cuisine and play authentic Irish music. My friends who are well cultured even sang along to many of the songs. Cheers for the extra entertainment. The neighboring table guests were happily intrigued as well. The staffers were quite accommodating and the service was great. They embodied much kindness and patience with us. I personally had their fish n chips. Pretty much a staple dish that I try at most places that serve it. It was perfectly breaded and was generous with the cod pieces as well. I enjoyed the fresh & plump chips. I love places that already have malt on the table. That's usually an indicator for me that their fish n chips are a main hit there! Their cocktails had fun names. I had Lux Of The Irish. It was very smooth and not too over the top with the flavoring. A delicious compliment to my dinner & experience. I'd definitely recommend coming here if you are interested in the Irish heritage. For an American place it felt like I traveled to another place entirely.

Yelp
Parents went to Ireland and since I couldn't go they treated me to a lovely dinner at the field. Leigh was our server and was helpful in food choices. There were three of us and we got happy hour chips n curry as well as sausage roll. For dinner we got the sampler and fish n chips. Twisted our arm for the Apple Carmel bread pudding. Place looked like what you see in the movies of Irish pubs and apparently according to people who actually were in Ireland it was a decent sized pub.

Yelp
We tried this spot with friends and family on Friday night and we were satisfied. My wife ordered the steak frites and I got the fish and chips. Both were great especially along with a guiness and margarita. Our friends got the shepard pie and bangers and they thought it was awesome. Overall, a great vibe with great service.

Yelp
We made the trek down to The Field on Saturday morning for brunch. On walking in, the downstairs is very loud and filled with smoke from a gentleman chain smoking right next to the door. The sweet server recommended that we go upstairs where it was much quieter and not smoky at all. It was very cozy and has a great Irish pub atmosphere. We ordered the sausage rolls, Shepherd's Pie, Full Irish Breakfast, and chicken wings. The sausage rolls were tasty and the sweet pepper sauce that comes with it is really unique and delicious. The chicken wings were really dry and overcooked. The full Irish breakfast, which I had high expectations for... was not great. All of it was very dry and cold - even the beans were cold and pasty. The eggs were cooked well, but the rest of it was really bland and the temperature issues made it unappealing. The shepherd's pie was excellent and came out piping hot and fresh. It was a hearty portion.

Yelp
this place is great! we came on St. Patrick's Day so had to pay a $5 cover but it was worth it. got seated upstairs, and the service was impeccable even tho they were busy! Nina, our server, was super sweet and attentive and even gave me a free dessert since it was my birthday :) the food and drinks are great too and it legit feels like a pub in Ireland. highly recommended and i'll be back to try more for sure!
google avatar

Yelp
The experience you will have at the Field is amazing, the ambiance, service, food, and drink are excellent, the atmosphere is wonderful with the live music and performances of real Irish dancing. The pub is cozy and the food is delicious, from the Boxty (traditional Irish potato pancake) to the Shepherds Pie and the Beef and Barley Stew and homemade Soda Bread, to the Guinness served up right, this traditional Irish pub will have you wanting more. If you want a wonderful experience and a delicious meal accompanied by the sounds of Ireland, then run don't walk down to The Field and enjoy.
google avatar

Josh M.

Yelp
The food is a bit pricy but fantastic, this is definitely my go to pub in San Diego. The ambiance and decor is great, the staff is always so nice.

Linda H.

Yelp
Just drove 2 hours to get here. This is the second spot and the ambiance is cool, the drinks are delicious (fyi the drinks we got are sweet), Brent provided excellent customer service. He's nice, fun and social with us. About to try the chicken tenders. Must try the trio peppermint, Oreo and peanut butter whiskey shots and the frozen Irish coffee.
google avatar

Lysa D.

Yelp
Cool spot in Gaslamp area. It's def a dive bar and they have Jameson on tap! We sat at the bar easily and ordered a few drinks that were basically and good. No idea how the food is but if you want a dive bar experience in the heart of Gaslamp, this is a good one!

Esmeralda

Yelp
Carisa is a gem. She was super friendly, and a great bartender! She knows what she's doing, and I'll definitely be back because of her. Loved the experience.
google avatar

Jessica Y.

Yelp
The field is such a solid spot. Honestly, the best Irish pub food that I have ever had. The place is dog friendly, and features outdoor seating, indoor seating, and upstairs seating near a window that is open to the outside. You can order a variety of cocktails and imported beers, sadly no pimm's cup however. I am always so surprised by the quality of the food that I get from the field, it is actually high quality even if you didn't consider that it's a pub. If you're looking for a star of the show menu item, I would say that they have the most surprisingly soft and moist bread pudding in all of San Diego.
google avatar

Heather D.

Yelp
Went 1st as part of a walking food tour. Returned after for the drink Irish mule was amazing. Would order again and again Got a thimble of shepherd pie. The mashed potatoes were dry. Staff were aloof but ok for both visits. Lots of places to drink in Gaslamp and multiple Irish pubs. Would only come back for the Irish mule.

Taylor M.

Yelp
so amazing. we love the food, the service, the vibe,!it's just all great! we especially love eating upstairs
google avatar

Carina A.

Yelp
We went for New Year's Eve. We ordered the sampler and it came out in less than 5 minutes we were shocked by the speed and the taste. We would 100 percent come by this spot again!! They had live music and a cute little bar inside.
google avatar

RJ O.

Yelp
This is a wonderful, well executed and authentic looking Irish pub in the heart of the Gaslamp District in San Diego. I'm Irish, have been to my share of Irish pubs in Ireland and this place is about as close to the real deal as you can get in the states. They pour a "proper pint" as the Irish say, of Guiness that is, as doing so properly is an art form of sorts. They have a proper selection of pub grub, excellent Irish breakfast and the usual Irish fare. They also have an extensive list of fine whiskeys. If you're ever down here, it's worth a go. Word of caution however, watch out for their 4% surcharge on the bill for "uncontrollable costs", whatever that is. These absurd surcharges are going to start impacting the tips left for the servers, as well as the patronage of the establishment eventually, which is unfortunate and in bad form.
google avatar

Linda S.

Yelp
We came In excited to enjoy happy hour. The bartender was sooooo rude. So yea we're out. Thanks for having us move on to a more welcoming bar.
google avatar

Paul L.

Yelp
TLDR: Friday evenings are busy and loud, as expected in this party district. I remember I had multiple shots at this bar, including one where we befriended an Irish guy with a thick accent. I can't recall his name and face anymore. The atmosphere was great, and we stayed up until the bar closed. I remember having IRISH COFFEE (Irish Whiskey, Brown Sugar, Cream, and Hot Coffee) - The cream had a thick layer coated with chocolate shamrock dust, and the whiskey of choice was Jameson. This drink helped me to stay up in the evening. It's a great alcohol and caffeine injection for those eventful nights.
google avatar

Cathy N.

Yelp
The service was a little slow but not too slow. I got the lamb shepherds pie, and it was mediocre. I think I could've cooked something better at home. The serving was also smaller than I expected, so I felt unsatisfied after finishing the pie. The decor was good with the typical pub look, but they played country music which felt very out of place. I wanted Irish music or at least some rock music, not country. There is the option for upstairs seating for a bit more quiet.
google avatar

Michele S.

Yelp
I visited this place for the first time over Comic Con wknd. I ordered a couple beers and a shot. I tipped the bartender $3 on a $30 tab. I guess the bartender felt he deserved more because he changed the tip on my tab to $7. Now while $4 isn't gonna break me, I don't really appreciate being stolen from or having my tip adjusted. If this place is doing this to me its probably doing it to a lot of its customers. Just an fyi if you wanna grab some drinks at this place, keep your receipts! I will be notifyng mgmt and contacting my credit card company.
google avatar

Crystal M.

Yelp
Saw that they serve bottomless mimosas for $25. They pretty much just give you OJ with a splash of Champagne. By our 4th cup, we actually laughed at the refill; it didn't even taste bubbly. The ladies who served us were nice though. My only complaint was the juicing down the mimosa that badly...
google avatar

Rose Lyn C.

Yelp
My friends and I were looking for a spot to eat after comic con, so we asked one of the workers at the convention center for a recommendation (specifically somewhere that wouldn't be too crowded and could accommodate our group of 5). This spot did not disappoint. It looked pretty packed inside, but they were still able to accommodate us. I just wanted to give props to their servers/team because our service was great and speedy without it feeling rushed. One friend ordered the fish & chips (she enjoyed it). Another enjoyed the bangers & mash. I got potato skins (yum - ate before I could get a photo, but would come back for those) and chicken tenders (Comic Con put me in a nostalgic mood). The chicken tenders tasted as you would expect them to taste. One friend got to bread pudding (loved - not too sweet). All in all we had a great time and my friend was glad he could get a dark beer (the bar at the Marriott did not have dark beer).

Yelp
I can Not say enough good things about the Field. You feel like you're sitting at a quaint Irish Pub outside temple bar. The service was impeccable - our waiter was not only nice and remembered everything, but he was so nice and easy to talk to! The food, omfg! The fish and chips were sooooo good, the tartar sauce had a bit of a kick to it. And the potato leek soup - just stawp it. Idk what kind of voodoo they put in that, but I've never tasted anything better. We will be back every time we visit SD
google avatar

Bryan And G.

Yelp
I had been here before a number of times but never had had the desert bread pudding, which was wonderful. We came for the Taste of the Gaslamp 2023, to this place, which is an authentic Irish Pub; taken brick by brick from Ireland. It's beautiful inside and out. We thoroughly enjoyed ourselves, food and service were excellent!!!
google avatar

Yelp
Great job folks at the field, food drinks and mood is capital , never fails to deliver
google avatar

Corinne D.

Yelp
I did not order any food at this location, we were here for drinks but the food that other customers ordered looked and smelled amazing! Everyone is super friendly here, real Irish music is playing throughout the establishment. I ordered a frozen Irish coffee, was perfect for the afternoon of yappin' with friends :) if I lived in SD, I would be a regular here.
google avatar

Andrea L.

Yelp
Ambiance-- very unique, feels like I'm in a Disneyland attraction! Very woody inside, on theme with the Irish pub, and love the Xmas decor! Also recommend sitting upstairs for a nice view of Gaslamp or view of the pub, and if you want a quieter ambiance. Food-- good! Shepherd's pie was comforting and had thick layer of potato. Would prefer if it was less soupy and more gravy like. Fish & chips was hot and crispy. The tartar sauce had good flavor. Wish there was more coleslaw amount. On the pricier side but understandable for the Gaslamp location. Service-- great! They let us choose where to sit. Additionally, they were quick & always checked up on us.

Yelp
What a great atmosphere!! I just got off a flight and wanted a beer while I caught up on emails before checking into my hotel. This place is a definite comeback to for me. Love the details of the Irish pub. They look to have the ability to turn the end of bar and stairs into a stage, so I'm sure this place is great on a night with music. Food that came out of the kitchen all looked good. Guinness was delicious and a proper pour!

Carol W.

Yelp
In town from Cleveland for the week and have been here twice already and the food is phenomenal!! My husband and I went the other day for dinner and got the sampler and oh my gosh what a great way to try some Irish classics and they were all amazing. However, the beef stew, which I would normally never order was off the charts - the flavor was just so good and the meat melted in your mouth, it was perfection. I went back today for lunch and had the potato and leek soup and it blew me away, it was puréed in true Irish fashion and the flavor was so comforting. I also had the arugula and beet salad which was just as good and so refreshing. And one of my favorite things, other than the food and service, is the constant stream of Irish music. When I go to an Irish bar that is exactly what I want!

Yelp
Hella good Irish peanut butter cocktail. Good Irish vibes. What more could you ask for?
