Where to Celebrate St. Patrick’s Season all Month Long in San Diego | Eater

"The Field is an authentic, turn-of-the-century Irish pub — in 1998, the owners say they shipped it from Ireland piece-by-piece and set up shop in the Gaslamp Quarter. Rustic wood details and a cozy stone fireplace create a relaxing ambiance, while traditional Irish fare warms you from the inside out. Standouts include Whiskey Chicken Boxty, a potato pancake that’s cooked on the griddle, then topped with Irish cheddar, mushrooms, and Jameson cream sauce. The bar also serves up six kinds of Jameson along with The Field’s housemade Jameson peppermint infusion; it’s the perfect place to find a new favorite." - Mary Beth Abate

I absolutely loved it here! I'd just returned from a trip to Dublin two weeks prior, and I felt like I was back in Eire. My Bailey's coffee was a generous pour, I walked out just a bit unbalanced. (Then again I'm a lightweight.) Service is fast and friendly, and sitting outside people watching was a great way to pass the afternoon. The interior is just as it should be, cozy and a little bit dark. I'd be a regular did I live in the area. Absolutely recommended!

Google
All day Irish Full Breakfast is where it’s at. Probably a little lacking flavour in terms of the bacon and the eggs but other people I was with had a good experience with the burgers and chicken meals. That said the black pudding was not bad for the US… of which I had extra. Fair prices as well. Love the wood filled interior and booths… gives that old pub feel.

Google
this place is great! we came on St. Patrick’s Day so had to pay a $5 cover but it was worth it. got seated upstairs, and the service was impeccable even tho they were busy! Nina, our server, was super sweet and attentive and even gave me a free dessert since it was my birthday :) the food and drinks are great too and it legit feels like a pub in Ireland. highly recommended and i’ll be back to try more for sure!

Google
Mar 2025. Feeling Irish in San Diego? Light Irish music in the background. The potato soup and Shepard pie were the traditional items I ordered today along with a pint of beer. Servers were friendly and the bar had a nice visual vibe. Felt like a bar should feel and look.

Google
This Irish Pub nestled in the busy streets of Gaslamp is a perfect place to have a Guinness. Not to mention, the fish & chips are excellent, best in the city. The atmosphere is exactly what is expected for an Irish tavern

Google
The food was great. Fries and gravy were excellent. The service was great. A good place to meet up with friends for a drink.

Google
A classic Irish pub with everything you’d expect. Great whiskey selection, great food. The corned beef is spot on! Wait staff is fun and always nearby. Sláinte!

Google
This place is great! I got the Irish sampler: beef stew, chicken boxty, shepard's pie, and corned beef and cabbage. All were lovely. Atmosphere was loud and raucous post Padres game. The staff were amazing even slammed as they were.

Yelp
I did not order any food at this location, we were here for drinks but the food that other customers ordered looked and smelled amazing! Everyone is super friendly here, real Irish music is playing throughout the establishment. I ordered a frozen Irish coffee, was perfect for the afternoon of yappin' with friends :) if I lived in SD, I would be a regular here.

Yelp
I'm giving this place four stars because it's a really cute atmosphere and vibe inside. Pros are that they have a really good potato leek soup! It was really comforting like a hug in a bowl. Unfortunately, I was not a fan of the shepherds pie and you would hope that this would be a great dish it's an Irish pub and this was one of the popular items. Service was good and the waitress was friendly.

Yelp
AHH omg what a cute little pub I loved coming in here today, definitely started getting into the St. Pattys day spirit and I love it!! I wish I lived in San Diego I would definitely be frequenting often! Brendan our server was so kind and had great conversation which I always appreciate so much from a bar, I know it gets super busy and it can be a lot so even the smallest gestures means the most! I'm obsessed with the potato skins, I immediately looked up a recipe to try when I get home to try and recreate these. I'm so sad I was already almost full when these arrived because I could've easily ate the whole thing if we had come to the Field first!! My only wish is that they would have some sort of game set up for customers like pool or foosball!!! Otherwise so so fun and service was excellent! Will definitely come back when I visit SD again!

Yelp
Shepherds pie was terrible. Mashed potatoes over Campbells Chunky Beef soup! Such a terrible way to rip off customers. They charged $21.00 for this slop AND charged an additional $4.00 surcharge for the "rising" cost of food! A total sham.

Yelp
In town from Cleveland for the week and have been here twice already and the food is phenomenal!! My husband and I went the other day for dinner and got the sampler and oh my gosh what a great way to try some Irish classics and they were all amazing. However, the beef stew, which I would normally never order was off the charts - the flavor was just so good and the meat melted in your mouth, it was perfection. I went back today for lunch and had the potato and leek soup and it blew me away, it was puréed in true Irish fashion and the flavor was so comforting. I also had the arugula and beet salad which was just as good and so refreshing. And one of my favorite things, other than the food and service, is the constant stream of Irish music. When I go to an Irish bar that is exactly what I want!

Yelp
This was one of our go to places when our lived in San Diego but we have not been here for probably over 10 years! In town for a work trip and not willing to eat the sushi that had been standing - a group of us headed here and it was a great pick! Still has the same charm with the cute Irish interior whiz is really fun and inviting! Great service throughout the night and some good British favorites! Had the fish n chips with a side of curry sauce and it was so good ! Everyone loved the food and a great time was had by all! Still the salad great place I remember

Yelp
I flipping love this place. Good food. Staff is always nice. Prices are good. Nothing negative to say.

Yelp
The curb appeal is what drew us in. Totally loved the tavern look, like Robin Hood, Robert snow or Hagrid was going to walk-in and shake off some snow at any second. Wooden tables and stone fireplace with dimly lit interior was a warm spot to enjoy some drinks. We decided to share some chicken tenders for an after taco snack along with our drinks. Great choices! Food was nice & fresh. Crispy exterior and juicy chicken. Would definitely recommend stopping by when visiting the Gaslamp district.

Yelp
I can Not say enough good things about the Field. You feel like you're sitting at a quaint Irish Pub outside temple bar. The service was impeccable - our waiter was not only nice and remembered everything, but he was so nice and easy to talk to! The food, omfg! The fish and chips were sooooo good, the tartar sauce had a bit of a kick to it. And the potato leek soup - just stawp it. Idk what kind of voodoo they put in that, but I've never tasted anything better. We will be back every time we visit SD

Yelp
My first visit to this establishment was on December 31, 2024. I went around lunchtime, and was pleasantly surprised to learn that they had an Irish New Year's celebration early in the day, followed by a more traditional one later. Staff was very accommodating, place was very busy. It's very interesting Decor; the wood was taken from an Irish pub, transported across the sea, and reassembled. So it's truly authentic. I had the Irish sampler which is four small samples. They include corned beef and cabbage, shepherds pie, boxty , and beef stew. They were all delicious. Service was fast, prices are very reasonable. I cannot comment on parking because I walked here. Sorry, folks, I had trouble getting lighting for my photographs.

Yelp
I love a good old fashion Irish pub. Search them out while traveling and any place I am. Love the vibe inside!! Unfortunately we chose to sit outside and missed the true ambiance of what an Irish pub should be. The Irish stew was a favorite amongst our group. The chicken boxty was really good also. Felt some of the other things we tried needed a bit more flavor. Wasn't omg amazing, but wasn't terrible! I would say definitely sit inside to get the whole feel of it.

Yelp
We made the trek down to The Field on Saturday morning for brunch. On walking in, the downstairs is very loud and filled with smoke from a gentleman chain smoking right next to the door. The sweet server recommended that we go upstairs where it was much quieter and not smoky at all. It was very cozy and has a great Irish pub atmosphere. We ordered the sausage rolls, Shepherd's Pie, Full Irish Breakfast, and chicken wings. The sausage rolls were tasty and the sweet pepper sauce that comes with it is really unique and delicious. The chicken wings were really dry and overcooked. The full Irish breakfast, which I had high expectations for... was not great. All of it was very dry and cold - even the beans were cold and pasty. The eggs were cooked well, but the rest of it was really bland and the temperature issues made it unappealing. The shepherd's pie was excellent and came out piping hot and fresh. It was a hearty portion.

Yelp
The Field Irish Pub located in the San Diego Gaslamp area was chosen by a friend as a spot to enjoy a couple of pints and a meal while catching up, and having been there several years before, I welcomed the idea. Upon arrival we were met by a young lady at the entrance and she promptly allowed us to enter when we chose to sit at the bar counter. "End of pleasant experience!". Once seated the bartender was reluctant to assist us, somewhat brash, and unfriendly. We ordered pints, and were rushed to select our meals. I selected the Cornbeef Sandwich, and my friend chose the Fish 'N Chips which I passed on because I had previously had fish a few days prior. The food arrived and the french fries were raw, and tasteless, and I was reluctant to return them due to the bartender's mood. In addition, I could not wrap my head around how you could toast one side of one half of the sandwich and the other three sides be raw and soggy. Terrible sandwich. My friend enjoyed the fish but did not consume the fries. I should have given my sandwich to the basset hound sitting in the lap of the gentleman next to me because the dog was very interested. Took some photos, and we departed. Will NEVER return

Yelp
We recently had reservations for a large group of us here. We were purposely dressed up to the nines in 20-40's theme. This was a fun Irish night out with my Dapper Club friends. They serve Irish cuisine and play authentic Irish music. My friends who are well cultured even sang along to many of the songs. Cheers for the extra entertainment. The neighboring table guests were happily intrigued as well. The staffers were quite accommodating and the service was great. They embodied much kindness and patience with us. I personally had their fish n chips. Pretty much a staple dish that I try at most places that serve it. It was perfectly breaded and was generous with the cod pieces as well. I enjoyed the fresh & plump chips. I love places that already have malt on the table. That's usually an indicator for me that their fish n chips are a main hit there! Their cocktails had fun names. I had Lux Of The Irish. It was very smooth and not too over the top with the flavoring. A delicious compliment to my dinner & experience. I'd definitely recommend coming here if you are interested in the Irish heritage. For an American place it felt like I traveled to another place entirely.

Yelp
The experience you will have at the Field is amazing, the ambiance, service, food, and drink are excellent, the atmosphere is wonderful with the live music and performances of real Irish dancing. The pub is cozy and the food is delicious, from the Boxty (traditional Irish potato pancake) to the Shepherds Pie and the Beef and Barley Stew and homemade Soda Bread, to the Guinness served up right, this traditional Irish pub will have you wanting more. If you want a wonderful experience and a delicious meal accompanied by the sounds of Ireland, then run don't walk down to The Field and enjoy.

Yelp
We came In excited to enjoy happy hour. The bartender was sooooo rude. So yea we're out. Thanks for having us move on to a more welcoming bar.

Yelp
Delicious authentic food, quick service and ambiance was clean with great music. Quiet during the day but the evenings had it happening with live music.

Yelp
Cool spot in Gaslamp area. It's def a dive bar and they have Jameson on tap! We sat at the bar easily and ordered a few drinks that were basically and good. No idea how the food is but if you want a dive bar experience in the heart of Gaslamp, this is a good one!
google avatar

Linda Q.

Yelp
Love this place. Drinks are on point and the food is great. It's a nice quaint place to go before the Padres game. I would love to go when there's live music.
google avatar

Dominic R.

Yelp
Unfriendly/impersonal staff probably due to rude tourists. I'm not a tourist and don't enjoy being disrespected. Smile! Be friendly! Try not to look at me as a dollar sign. Like most places in the gaslamp, overpriced and underwhelming. Shepherds pie was pretty good.
google avatar

Yelp
WTH happened here?? The place has always been dirty, bathroom huge stench of urine, & poop. The food has always been horrible frozen Costco garbage.. but what happened now, is the bartenders don't give AF & just are rude, Daniel I know you're getting up there, I know ur other place was closed due to vermin, & lack of maintenance.. but really these wanna be Dubliners?? Oy, Daniel you & your daughter are FAILURES

Yelp
The field is such a solid spot. Honestly, the best Irish pub food that I have ever had. The place is dog friendly, and features outdoor seating, indoor seating, and upstairs seating near a window that is open to the outside. You can order a variety of cocktails and imported beers, sadly no pimm's cup however. I am always so surprised by the quality of the food that I get from the field, it is actually high quality even if you didn't consider that it's a pub. If you're looking for a star of the show menu item, I would say that they have the most surprisingly soft and moist bread pudding in all of San Diego.
google avatar

Heather D.

Yelp
Went 1st as part of a walking food tour. Returned after for the drink Irish mule was amazing. Would order again and again Got a thimble of shepherd pie. The mashed potatoes were dry. Staff were aloof but ok for both visits. Lots of places to drink in Gaslamp and multiple Irish pubs. Would only come back for the Irish mule.

Yelp
This is a wonderful, well executed and authentic looking Irish pub in the heart of the Gaslamp District in San Diego. I'm Irish, have been to my share of Irish pubs in Ireland and this place is about as close to the real deal as you can get in the states. They pour a "proper pint" as the Irish say, of Guiness that is, as doing so properly is an art form of sorts. They have a proper selection of pub grub, excellent Irish breakfast and the usual Irish fare. They also have an extensive list of fine whiskeys. If you're ever down here, it's worth a go. Word of caution however, watch out for their 4% surcharge on the bill for "uncontrollable costs", whatever that is. These absurd surcharges are going to start impacting the tips left for the servers, as well as the patronage of the establishment eventually, which is unfortunate and in bad form.
google avatar

Carina A.

Yelp
We went for New Year's Eve. We ordered the sampler and it came out in less than 5 minutes we were shocked by the speed and the taste. We would 100 percent come by this spot again!! They had live music and a cute little bar inside.

Gail B.

Yelp
Great corned beef sandwiches. The item to order. Friendly staff. Nice outdoor experience.
google avatar

Crystal M.

Yelp
Saw that they serve bottomless mimosas for $25. They pretty much just give you OJ with a splash of Champagne. By our 4th cup, we actually laughed at the refill; it didn't even taste bubbly. The ladies who served us were nice though. My only complaint was the juicing down the mimosa that badly...
google avatar

Andrea L.

Yelp
Ambiance-- very unique, feels like I'm in a Disneyland attraction! Very woody inside, on theme with the Irish pub, and love the Xmas decor! Also recommend sitting upstairs for a nice view of Gaslamp or view of the pub, and if you want a quieter ambiance. Food-- good! Shepherd's pie was comforting and had thick layer of potato. Would prefer if it was less soupy and more gravy like. Fish & chips was hot and crispy. The tartar sauce had good flavor. Wish there was more coleslaw amount. On the pricier side but understandable for the Gaslamp location. Service-- great! They let us choose where to sit. Additionally, they were quick & always checked up on us.

Yelp
I've been to this place a couple of times and I really like the atmosphere and service, very warm and friendly as an Irish pub should be. The happy hour deals are pretty good, and I love their curry fries! I haven't tried the food but there's definitely a lot of authentic Irish options if that's something you're craving. Not very crowded on a weeknight happy hour, but this place can definitely get busy during game days or when there's a convention.
google avatar

Paul L.

Yelp
TLDR: Friday evenings are busy and loud, as expected in this party district. I remember I had multiple shots at this bar, including one where we befriended an Irish guy with a thick accent. I can't recall his name and face anymore. The atmosphere was great, and we stayed up until the bar closed. I remember having IRISH COFFEE (Irish Whiskey, Brown Sugar, Cream, and Hot Coffee) - The cream had a thick layer coated with chocolate shamrock dust, and the whiskey of choice was Jameson. This drink helped me to stay up in the evening. It's a great alcohol and caffeine injection for those eventful nights.
google avatar

Giovanni O.

Yelp
Hella good Irish peanut butter cocktail. Good Irish vibes. What more could you ask for?
google avatar

Shannon P.

Yelp
Wow this place is packed after a Padres game! But we walked straight back to the bar and were able to order drinks and shots very quickly. Only sit at the tables if you're up for having someone come get your drink order and possibly food, otherwise there's tons of places to sit and stand to just order drinks from the bar. Cozy atmosphere but also really loud the music sounds Irish but you can't hear anything they're saying bc it's so loud ha. But also it's got a great laid back vibe that makes me feel like I'd be welcome in a hoodie and jeans. I'll def come back next time I'm in San Diego!
google avatar

Yelp
Been going to this place for years. Super solid Irish pub. Good food, good Irish coffee, and excellent ambiance.
google avatar

Yelp
The best ambiance. Brett was killer on the bar and the crowd was perfect. Didn't try the food, but they are sheppards pie

Lynn E.

Yelp
I love the "fish and chip" for lunch at The Field. Absolutely fresh and delicious! They are served piping hot right out the kitchen and arrive so quickly to your table. Truly the fries are addictive plus they are served with the right amount of salt and seasoning. The Field is my lunch hide-out when I'm working downtown.
google avatar

Bryan And G.

Yelp
I had been here before a number of times but never had had the desert bread pudding, which was wonderful. We came for the Taste of the Gaslamp 2023, to this place, which is an authentic Irish Pub; taken brick by brick from Ireland. It's beautiful inside and out. We thoroughly enjoyed ourselves, food and service were excellent!!!
google avatar

Yelp
My friends and I were looking for a spot to eat after comic con, so we asked one of the workers at the convention center for a recommendation (specifically somewhere that wouldn't be too crowded and could accommodate our group of 5). This spot did not disappoint. It looked pretty packed inside, but they were still able to accommodate us. I just wanted to give props to their servers/team because our service was great and speedy without it feeling rushed. One friend ordered the fish & chips (she enjoyed it). Another enjoyed the bangers & mash. I got potato skins (yum - ate before I could get a photo, but would come back for those) and chicken tenders (Comic Con put me in a nostalgic mood). The chicken tenders tasted as you would expect them to taste. One friend got to bread pudding (loved - not too sweet). All in all we had a great time and my friend was glad he could get a dark beer (the bar at the Marriott did not have dark beer).

Melissa B.

Yelp
My mom and I went here for one of our "New Year, New Restaurants" resolution, we try a new restaurant every Friday. I loved this place! The atmosphere was great! Not to loud. Our waiter was perfect and so was the food! Drinks were great and I didn't realize I liked bread pudding! We will definitely be back!
google avatar

Greg F.

Yelp
What a great atmosphere!! I just got off a flight and wanted a beer while I caught up on emails before checking into my hotel. This place is a definite comeback to for me. Love the details of the Irish pub. They look to have the ability to turn the end of bar and stairs into a stage, so I'm sure this place is great on a night with music. Food that came out of the kitchen all looked good. Guinness was delicious and a proper pour!

Yelp
We went here Saturday night Nov. 16th 2024 for my sisters birthday. My sister was excited to go to an Irish bar with great Irish music. I was surprised when we walked in that it was so empty. When we walked in we noticed that there wasn't any Irish music playing, instead they were playing regular music. I asked the person at the front if they were going to play any Irish music and she said, "No we're (the employees) are tired of the Irish music and so we're not doing that." I asked if they could change the music to Irish tonight since it's an Irish bar and we were there for the Irish music, and she said "I don't think so but you can ask your server." So I asked the server and she said the same thing, "the employees are so tired of Irish music that we don't want to play it." When I asked her to please change it to Irish Music, she dropped her head and put her hand on her face and then said, "we are so tired of that music!" I understand that the employees are tired of it, but it's for the customers. If they don't like the music anymore, then move to a different job. I have no idea why management/owners would take the music away from the paying customers, because the employees are tired of it; the music isn't for the employees, it's for the guests that expect Irish music in an Irish bar. I asked for the manager, and the waitress left irritated. It's no wonder they were empty. They were no different than any other bar in the area. What made them special was that it was an Irish bar with an Irish feel and great Irish music. But they changed that to please the employees. How stupid. The waitress came back and said that manager is on break and wouldn't talk to us until she was ready. So we decided to leave. We found a great Irish bar just a few doors down called "Blarney Stone Pub". We asked them to play Irish music and they said "Absolutely!" Eight of us spent hours there drinking and we all had a great time. How stupid that The Field Irish Pub management/owners think it's more important to make sure the employees are happy with the music instead of the customers. And worse, they let hundreds of dollars of income walk out the door. They use to have live music and dancers, and I thought they might have that on a Saturday night, and so I asked them about it, but they said "...because of covid we're not doing that anymore." I thought, Covid! That's over and things are back to normal now...what are you talking about!!! The Field Irish Pub used to be packed on the entertainment nights, and so I have no idea why they wouldn't bring that back?! Later that night, we walked by The Field Irish Pub and it was still empty with just a few people inside. And this was a Saturday night when they should have been full like the many bars around them. But their foolishness seems to be chasing customers away. I know we won't ever go back.

Meghan J.

Yelp
We had such a great time at Field Irish Pub! We ended up here after dinner across the street with a group of friends and enjoyed it so much! The service was great from the bartenders and Kayla really made our night. It had a great vibe inside, and lots of different seating options. We will be returning next time we are in town!
google avatar

Liz L.

Yelp
Hands down the best and authentic Irish pub in San Diego. The food was great, service was great, thanks Finn. They have the largest selection of real Irish whiskey!!! I enjoyed my Teeling Whiskey old fashioned and a shot of Powers. We will definitely be back. Cozy ambiance upstairs.

Cathy N.

Yelp
The service was a little slow but not too slow. I got the lamb shepherds pie, and it was mediocre. I think I could've cooked something better at home. The serving was also smaller than I expected, so I felt unsatisfied after finishing the pie. The decor was good with the typical pub look, but they played country music which felt very out of place. I wanted Irish music or at least some rock music, not country. There is the option for upstairs seating for a bit more quiet.
google avatar

Diane E.

Yelp
Staying close by for a conference and wanted a cozy place with good food for dinner. Great ambiance. Lovely staff. Terrific Shepherds Pie.

Danny S.

Yelp
The food was good. The service was ok and the inside has a unique old style look to it. I like the place but it definitely is a little more pricey than it should be.
google avatar

Steve E.

Yelp
Old school Ireland bar in SD. The drinks are very Irish. The Guinness is top notch. The food is great. And the service is fast with a smile.
google avatar

Emma B.

Yelp
Very much so the typical Irish pub vibe - really enjoyed the drinks and had great servers the whole night! Never waited long for another drink. If you're a whisky fan - recommend the Irish mule!
google avatar

Yelp
Outstanding food and drinks. We both had the fish and chips and I must say, it was some of the best I've ever had. Will be definitely back on our next vacation to the Gaslamp area!
