The 24 Best Restaurants & Hotels In Vancouver - Vancouver - The Infatuation

"If you’re a person who likes to know what type of plankton your oysters ate prior to arriving in front of you, you’re definitely going to have a good time at The Fish Counter. The owners are incredibly passionate about local seafood and you can come in just to talk to them about sustainable fish—though there’s no way you leave without getting some of the best oyster po'boys and fish and chips in the city. It’s a tiny spot with approximately one bench in the whole place, but you can stand at the counter while you eat or get everything to go. On your way out, grab some caesar mix, Canada’s clam juice version of a Blood Mary that tastes 100% better than it sounds." - Amber Gibson, Team Infatuation

The 38 Best Restaurants in Vancouver | Eater

"In their pre-Fish Counter days, co-owners Rob Clark and Mike McDermid were, respectively, a two-time Gold Medal Plates-winning chef and a marine biologist. They teamed up to create the Ocean Wise program, which now spans Canada, to help consumers find sustainable seafood. They sell seasonal, locally sourced fish from a literal fish counter at Fish Counter, but the shop also boasts a takeout counter where a fryer produces superb fish and chips (try the lingcod), oyster po’ boys, and crispy fish tacos. There are also soups, including a B.C.-tomato-based, saffron-spiked bouillabaisse swimming with seafood, and a dairy-free clam chowder." - Nikki Bayley

We had the 2 piece cod and chips, added a piece of snapper. Fish was fried well, fresh and juicy. Fries could be improved on, the pieces are tiny end cuts, and not our preferred style for fries. Fish was a little oily, and when they put the fish on top of the plastic container, the hot oil melted the container. Service could be improved, we asked to ‘add’ on a piece of snapper, but they charged us a meal. They resolved the mix up for us but this could have been prevented.

Went back after 9 years since our first date. The batter on the fish was pretty good, but the fish itself had no flavor. Compared to before, there’s now more seating available. The restaurant is very casual and laid-back, and you pretty much help yourself with everything.

Excellent fish and chips! The service is quick and the fish is fresh. I would definitely recommend this place for a good lunch or dinner option on Main St. As someone with Celiac's I always like to visit here when I'm in the neighborhood since I know they take allergy accommodation seriously (they even have a separate fryer for gluten free options). I have tried their gluten free battered salmon and halibut and they were both very good.

My fiancé and I got the cod n chips, wow it was so fresh and crispy. Such generous tartar sauce was enough for the both us! Next time, would like to try more food on their menu 😊 Highly recommend for anyone who is craving for fish n chips.

Always love myself a great fish and chip as I rarely eat it. So when I do, I want quality that will make me happy and come back again. Nothing worst the. Soggy batter and fries. They make it trash and crunchy as it should be.

Ordered the 2-piece halibut meal for me and my partner. In a pleasant surprise however, they served us two separate 1-piece halibut meals, both with fries and coleslaw. The extra sides were much appreciated. The halibut meat was amazingly fresh and cooked perfectly in a golden crisp. I appreciated the minimal seasoning used on the fish, so I could really enjoy the sweet, buttery flavours infused in the halibut. The meat was also nice and lean, while not being too dense. The fries were golden brown, and addicting as well. Finishing off with the coleslaw to cleanse the palette. I also ordered some fried oysters which did not disappoint. The staff were joking amongst themselves which was nice to see. Made the place feel more human, and lively. I do have one negative point. Upon payment, the tip options yielded; 10%, 20%, 25%, and other. I think removing the 15%, or 18% intermediate options dissuaded me to give a generous tip. I ended up picking “other” and tipping 15%. Especially in a self-serve restaurant where you find your own seats, and walk to the counter for your own utensils and water. I couldn’t justify tipping anything more than 15%. I definitely recommend trying the fish and chips here. As for serving size, the 1 piece meal satiated my hunger perfectly. Visited this restaurant for the first time 10 years ago, and came back again recently. And boy am I glad to be back.

Google
The Fish Counter in Vancouver is generally praised for its fresh, sustainably sourced seafood and high-quality fish and chips. Many reviewers highlight the light, crispy batter, perfectly cooked fish, and delicious house-made tartar sauce. There are also positive comments about the friendly service, especially for those with dietary restrictions, such as gluten-free options. A shop with a fish market and kitchen. God bless this place. What a great concept and addition to main street eats. Highly recommend this place to anyone. Chowders are lovely and comforting. Today I got the po boy sandwich. It is so gooooood, and messy lol. To my surprise I found out that there was kimchi in it! What a great twist/ combination. Sandwich also came with some pickled cabbage. They take your order at the till, then when your food is ready they call your name. This place doesn't have much chairs or tables so just be aware. It's pretty much street food style, order and eat by the windows or outside. They always have fresh seafood coming in daily. They also prep sauces and soups as well to bring home to enjoy!
