The Fish House

On my recent trip to the UK with my fiancé, we dined at The Fish House by Deep Blue Restaurants and had an amazing experience with their fish and chips. The atmosphere was cozy and welcoming, setting the stage for a delightful meal. The fish was fresh and perfectly cooked with a crispy, light batter, while the chips were thick-cut, crispy outside, and fluffy inside. The tartar sauce and mushy peas complemented the dish wonderfully. The portions were generous, and the service was friendly and attentive. Overall, The Fish House offered some of the best fish and chips I've ever tasted and is a must-visit for anyone in the UK.

This was our first meal after arriving in London from LA in June 2024. We ordered the cod and haddock with chips and the portions were pretty large. The batter was light and crispy and the fish nice and moist. The chips were good. Our waiter, Philip, couldn't really explain what the difference between the cod and haddock was, but he did try, and was interested in our opinion after we tasted both. We liked the haddock a little better--it was a bit tastier. We enjoyed our meal and the service and would come back again when we are back in London.

We visited twice on our trip to London, and really liked it. The staff were lovely and the food was great. Will definitely come back! 😊

Upon entering the restaurant, it’s nice place with a nice atmosphere. However, the same can’t be said about the food. We ordered fish and chips. The fish was excellent but the chips were way too hard and didn’t taste fresh at all. Seeing how it’s a fish and chips restaurant, I expected more. The workers aren’t necessarily rude but they weren’t welcoming either. It seemed like they were only their to do their job. Which of course is what they’re supposed to do but it would be nice if they had a nicer attitude.

Amazing food, we choose the Regular fish and chips and Antlantic beer Pale Ale to follow the dish and we loved, and one thing that make our experience too much beter was Philipe service, he was amazing, helpful and efficient, we totally recommend this place for a really good fish and tips experience in London, Nothing Hill.

This restaurant serves the best fish and chips in the world! I've been here in 2016 (because of a recommendation) and can honestly say that I've never had better fish and chips ever (again now in 2024). When I'm in London, I will visit again. Thanks Rathikha for your professional service!

Sorry to say this was not what I expected. Service was slow. No one really seemed like they wanted to be there. We ordered some basics to try. This was our one and only “fish and chips” in London and it made us rethink trying it again. It’s frozen fish, not very tasty at all. The chips where dry and bland. The calamari was odd looking but tasted the best of the meal. We ordered bread at like 2 bucks a wack and we got what seemed like day old hamburger buns they use for their sandwiches. As you can see. The fish had many bones. You don’t go to a fish and chip place and expect bones sorry. Won’t go again and didn’t want to try again as we had a bad taste for it at this point.

Great customer service and very friendly. Was definitely worth the walk. Fish was fresh, chips were just perfect and I was suggested the curry sauce on the side which I was reluctant to do being old fashioned but it was delicious. The pudding with warm custard was moth watering to finish my meal off. I would definitely recommend this fish and chips shop.

Even at this late a stage in our trip, some things that are culturally different surprise me. Take, for example, Deep Blue a.k.a. The Fish House of Notting Hill. It seems they offer seating with basically no service whatsoever; scan a QR code, place your order, scan another QR code, leave a tip. That's fine, your restaurant, your rules. Good thing the fish and chips made it worth it. I have made this style of chips myself, an oven-fried, dipped in cornstarch affair that leaves a super-crispy exterior and piping hot, steaming interior. Happily, when you have a deep fryer (and, I suspect, a bit of lard) it tastes *way* better. The exterior of the haddock (haddock being the WiFi password, so as to help you order more consistently) was perfectly battered and fried to a crisp, while the fish stayed flaky and moist. Also, it was ginormous. I dipped some of it in the curry sauce (and the slightly sweet tartar sauce) but honestly it stood on its own. I tried my wife's cod but tbh the haddock was better. As far as I can tell, a quality plate of fish and chips.

this was a huge disappointment. the food was mediocre, and the service was horrible. the person who took our order rang up the wrong thing and ordered way more food than what we ordered. we were confused by the charge and she just said it was standard. communicating with her was difficult. wouldn't recommend this place

This restaurant came highly recommended via reviews and was well worth the walk. Really enjoyed the food and the very friendly staff. Ordered the large cod wondering if it would be filling enough and, lol, gigantically filling Cooked to order and very flavorful - also the chips and calamari were very delicious as well.

Just came today and the fish ( we got haddock) and chips were very bland. We also got a steak and Alr pie which was a little better. Beth disappointing after reading such positive reviews

Great fish and chips place near notting hill. Upstairs seating available. Dining in prices a little hefty for fish and chips...add 2-3 £ to takeaway prices. My husband got the cod and I had the lemon sole, both were huge filets, fresh and tender. (Written by husband)

Like several other reviewers, I have more than my share of foggy memories about late nights in England when me and my mates had more than a few pints and hunger struck. On those nights, memories of the fish and chips we scored, wrapped in cones of newspaper, are actually quite clear: salvation, defined. For ages, fish and chips have occupied a very specific British demographic: the young, carefree, intoxicated masses. This Fish House offers an altogether elevated experience, something resembling dining, rather than scarfing. You can order to-go on the bottom floor, but the top floor offers nice tables and service, in a bright atmosphere. I did note a language barrier, just a tad, wherein, for instance, our server had to repeat beverage orders and was averse to serving tap water (which is actually a London thing, everywhere), but overall I liked the personnel. You'll choose from several whitefish options, and there's a solid menu of additional plates, if fish isn't really your thang. A terrific late lunch.

The place for fish & chips in Notting Hill/Kensington/Brunswick Gardens, worth a trip even if you are further! The staff are such wonderful and welcoming folks, couldn't thank them enough for their warm service. And the food - perfection!!!

The Fish House of Notting Hill was a definite winner on our first dinner in London. Walking right inside before we got seated upstairs and I could already smell fresh fish in their kitchen and I knew right then we were in for something really good. After a ten hour flight I was in the mood for something filling. So I ordered the "British Beef 6 oz. Gourmet Burger with bacon & cheese" (10.50 GBP). Since the beef patty is 6 oz. it truly was a tasty burger. The layer of bacon gave it a little salted taste and the bread roll bun was soft. I did like the melted cheese in between. It was a well rounded burger that included fresh cut chips. For Fish & Chips we ordered it in the "Cod" option. In regular size (14.50 GBP). Once it was served I could already see its batter and it looked mighty good. On my first bite it does have a flaky texture, and it didn't taste fishy at all, so it wasn't too crazy. It was melt in your mouth goodness, that I could definitely get into. The tartar sauce tasted simple and gave it a good mayonnaise flavor. The malted vinegar as condiments was of course the icing on the cake. Prior to the visit I don't eat seafood of any kind and to have their Fish & Chips experience it was exceptional. I went with the traditional "Meantime London Pale Ale" (3.95 GBP). This beer tasted mildly citrusy with a little bitter at the end. Overall, it paired with our meals quite well. We got friendly service here. The simple easy to read menus was great, and dining in was comfortable making the experience well worth it to enjoy Fish House's delicious Fish & Chips.

Fast and good service. It's mostly a fish place but you can get Burgers which I wouldn't recommend the cheese it's Kraft singles. The salt and pepper calamari is Amazing

When in the UK, get fish and chips... right? This was a solid choice (although arguably I had better in SF. Codmother's is one of my favorite just saying.) Located in Notting Hill, near the Portobello Road Market. The location was very convenient and it had a fair share of people even when it was late. There's an option of dine in and dine out. I wish that we knew that there was a difference. We just went in, there were limited seats (and all occupied), and we were told we had to take it out (which was fine.) The tartar sauce was alright. The fish was crunchy, and also had the skin in it. I don't like fish skin sooo I prefer it didn't have that. There were multiple options for fish and I believe we got the cod (most basic.) The servings was also huuuge, so we didn't finish it. Best part of it was it was very fresh, and made to order! If you're here and you wanna try fish and chips, this isn't a bad choice.

Take away is much cheaper. The waiter who welcomed us kind, but the one who served us seemed to rush a lot and didn't seem very pleased to serve us. The small cod and chips came with a surprisingly decent portion of fish. The tartare sauce was pretty good. The chips were eh. Pass, I've had better chips. I really liked how the outside of the fish was so crispy, and stayed crispy. Unfortunately, the fish itself was flavorless, which is due to the fish itself likely. But I didn't think this meal was too enjoyable for my taste.

If you want hand-breaded fish and chips, go here. No frozen, breaded pieces to be found. Take away counter staff was friendly and funny and took pride in the food quality. Breading is not too thick. It's a good ratio to the filet. Batter is made up by them throughout the day so it's fresh. A large comes with a huge amount of chips and the filet is plenty big for two people. Our new favorite place!

Was wanting to get a bite of authentic fish and chips in, and found this spot nearby. Among a sea of other spots claiming to be "the best" this one simply is. Clean, big portions and as yummy as I thought it'd be with each piece staying stable until it melted into my mouth.

Waiter was nice and attentive. Food was served fast. Seating area is very tight & also limited. Food was great though. Fish cakes came out of a box so we didn't order that. Would recommend. We only came because of the reviews and the fact it's on Notting Hill but we really enjoyed it.

Truly 5 star fish and chips of the Gods. Flaky, fresh, crunchy fish, piping hot chips, plus the restaurant was clean and beautiful. Great view from 2nd floor dining room, excellent service. Would love to return again.

This is a great takeaway shop with delicious fish and chips. They subscribe to the "do one thing well" philosophy, which I appreciate. This is very near the Notting Hill tube station and a good spot for grab and go. Everything is cooked to order, so service takes a few minutes, but it was well worth it. The fish is light and flakey, the chips are crisp and salty. Portions are very generous. All in all, a great neighborhood spot!

Those ordering a takeaway pay significantly less than those eating in. I won't deny that a summer picnic in Hyde Park seems the ideal situation in which to enjoy the British staple of fish & chips, however, an evening winter meal calls for enjoying The Fish House's upstairs dining area, its stark white walls modestly decorated with framed photographs, the space so crowded that our waiter barely has room to move between tables. It's warm & inviting up there & the large windows facing Pembridge Road offer a very London view of double decker busses driving past. We shared an order of Crispy Fried Prawns (9 for £10.90) & the large portion of Cod & Chips (£14.50), which was more than enough for two hungry diners. Douse every flakey bite in malt vinegar & if you are so inclined, try the sharply-flavored onion condiment on the table. We were pleased with these condiments, but wished the tarter sauce tasted of more than just mayo. A heads up for those who care: skin is left on on one side of the fish, which was easy for me to avoid. Delicious, crispy chips, probably the best I had on this trip!

What a lovely way to start our trip to London! Two American tourist, doing two very touristy things. Day 1- of course we need Fish & Chips. The gentleman working at the Fish House tonight were great. They were welcoming and accommodating, and made sure we were comfortable in the seating area. I had ordered the Small Cod, and the gentleman cooking tonight gave me some extra cod bites - telling me a small simply wasn't enough and he felt I needed a few extra pieces. He was right! The small was a good size, but the fish was too good and I did enjoy the bites. The fish was fried perfectly and the chips were well cooked - obviously the food is fried but not even the slightest bit of grease! The restaurant is a sweet little location, clean, and modern. We would definitely come back!

I loved the Fish House of Notting Hill. Order the Fish & Chips with pickled onion & gherkin on the side. They go perfectly together. The chips are thick & crispy on the outside and soft in the middle. I seen a lot of people complaining about them being bland. I disagree. Very tasty to me. You can always add a little salt. Get the pudding of the day. It's simple, yet so delicious. I highly enjoyed that. Mine was chocolate and the middle was all melty & oozing chocolate, like a molten lava cake. I was in heaven. I seen a lot of reviews saying they charge extra to sit in. ALLLL places in England charge extra to sit in. It's a service charge. Basically, their TIP. We Americans tip anyways, so that's nothing that is so upsetting to us. You're supposed to tip. Service was very friendly. I knocked one star off for being a little pricey. I ordered the regular which was £14.50 which converts to 19 US , but again .. that's regular for England.

I'd been craving good old fashioned Northern grub for so long and was half debating dropping everything and hot footing it north and then.... Der der deeeeer.. I found this little him of a chippy in Notting Hill!! Yippeeee! I went for a small chips which were put in a lovely cone to make it easy for eating and also to let the salt and vinegar trickle down!!! Yes they know! The finishing touch was that they were wrapped in newspaper..: Awww cuteness! The chips were fat and juicy, exactly how good chips should be! The servers are really friendly and not afraid to have a bit of banter! Woop! Seriously, if you're in Notting Hill, you gotta check this place!

We had takeout downstairs. This is the best fish and chips of our UK trip! Super friendly service. The chicken pot pie and the battered sausage also tastes great!

This was the 2nd best fish and chips I had in the UK So I rate my fish and chips on several things, Flavor of breading, freshness, texture of chips, and price. This place got everything right they were just a bit pricier than another place I tried in Lincolnshire. I really liked this place. I ate here 3 times before heading back to the US. I had a lots of fish and chips while in the UK and (like most British food) the fish breading is usually pretty bland so to find a place where you don't have to add salt is worth another try and a good review. Defiantly would recommend. The staff is also very nice. A couple of Italian or French guys who know their fish.

A no frills small spaced joint. They offer three sizes for their fish and chips: small, medium, and large. A medium is plenty to share between 2 people. Had their cod. Came out to us piping hot as hell. Crispy af

This chip shop seems to come out of nowhere but it was the perfect place for my sister, cousin, and I to take a break from perusing on Portobello road. I had the shrimp scampi and it tasted fresh and delicious! We were there on a Saturday afternoon in late May and we were seated straight away with a view of the street below.

If you're done wandering around Notting Hill or have endured the madness of Portobello Road for too many hours and want a delicious fish n chips meal, you have found one of the best! As an American who's dealt with mediocre fried fish for most of my life, I was really happy to have found the Fish House. We split a large haddock and chips (£14.5) and that was definitely enough food for two people. The fish was probably a foot long. We also had the salt and pepper calamari, but it was very chewy and a tiny portion, so I'd skip that. Service here is very brusque, but I like that since there is often a line for lunchtime and mainly people want to eat and leave. The Fish House was my favorite fish n chips in all of London. Recommended!

In comparison to many other fish and chippys, this has by far the best prepared and cooked fish. It Is always cooked to order and therefore takes a short while to appear. The chips are less so, a bit soggy, unless you ask them for well done. Young enthusiastic service. Good value relative to other offerings in the vicinity.

This place is the real deal!!! So delicious and amazing! I ordered the haddock and chips and it was so flavorful and delicious. I also ordered the meat pie to go and that was a smash. This is the place I started dreaming about! Can't wait to visit again!

The best i've tried so far~ After a a long walk from the Westborne park area down Portobello Market my friend and I were starving.. He was visiting from Germany and wanted to eat Fish & Chips.. i was not familiar with the area so i hit up google...and this place was on the top 5 places for Fish & Chips and we were right in front of it. So decided not to venture far...and ever since then i've been a total fan and this is where i take all my friends. It's not cheap...but the quality of food is great in my opinion. What i like: 1. FOOD FOOD FOOD-the batter is crispy and the fish is flaky & fresh 2. Ambiance- very cute & clean cottage on the beach feel. 3. Staff is SUPER friendly and cool. And very helpful for suggestions.

My history with fish and chips dates back to my days abroad in England, marked mostly by drunk late night cravings at sketchy takeaway spots, or default meals at dark pubs. Therefore, it's refreshing to see The Fish House offer an alternative for the non-degenerate crowd - a chippy that's kitchen-tiled, clean, white-and-teal, and nautical-themed. Not to mention, they were bumpin' upbeat reggae and island beats, which just seems like pretty important info in general. The Fish House offers the same general fare as its down and dirtier brethren, though here they celebrate their responsibly sourced seafood. I got my standard order of Haddock and Chips, with a side of Mushy Peas (plus a Meantime London Lager) - and the fish was excellent. The batter was light without being puffy, crispy without being crusty - that solid-coated combo that only a well-trained, English deep-fryer can miraculously manage. So, how did we get here? After a stroll down Portobello Road, nearing the Notting Hill Gate tube stop, we weren't exactly looking for fish and chips, but man, were we glad we found it. It's not entirely surprising us tourists got sucked in here, given what it lacks in authentic digs, it manages to make up with inviting charm. The downstairs is a spick-and-span takeaway counter, while the upstairs brings you to a casual dining room overlooking some lovely London backyards. And in lieu of traditional male and female stick figures on the toilet doors, you have images of Hugh Grant and Julia Roberts, in case you forgot the neighborhood you were in and/or a certain 1999 rom-com of the same name. I forwent my typical fish and chips research prior to my recent trip to London, rightfully assuming we'd stumble in the right direction at some point. While I expected this to come in the form of greasier fare in styrofoam trays, the quality upgrade was a delicious diversion and worthy of a recommendation for those headed into town. Despite its softer appearance, The Fish House makes a mean fish and chips.

I came across this place while walking to the underground hungry. It looked nice and they have an emphasis on sustainable fishing - which is great. We ordered the chicken pie and small cod. The pie was clearly made, not bought and was almost perfect. The pastry wasn't overwhelming and the pie had a nice mushroom and chicken taste. My only comment would be that there needs to be more chicken bits. The cod was nice and was cooked just right rather than too long. The small size is quite generous so many might find it suitable for a lunch rather than being tempted to order a larger one. The chips, are perhaps the best thing about this place. Perfectly cooked so they are crispy but not greasy. They tasted great!! Wish I could eat chips like this more often.

The Fish and Chips are really good I recommend the Take out and eat at the Counter Can't justify paying almost twice as much to have sit down Also they recommended the Cod which was really good They are close to my Hotel so every time I come back it will be trip to this place I used to go downtown but not worth the extra time to get there

Excellent breading on the fish, sausage and chicken bites. Crisp, light and delicious!!! The steak pie is undesirably savory.....highly recommend, even though the toilette is 3 floors down, it is worth it!!!!

Great little place in Notting Hill. The first stop on a London stop. I had read several great reviews. I can say without doubt the best fish and chips Ive had and that includes Codfathers in SF and CodMothers in Charleston.Had take away the service was fast and Friendly. The staff was working hard as they were very busy. Don't miss!

Our first fish & chips while staying in London. Delicious! Lightly battered, crispy & tasty. I ordered the haddock while my husband ordered the cod - both were well fried and didn't disappoint. You have the option of dining upstairs in their actual dining room, or you could grab a couple of the window seats by the front of the store. Portions are relatively large, so be forewarned! Oh, and they don't take Amex. Enjoy!

Yummy, crispy and fresh. Weekend this is always busy so I recommend you go weekdays, very attentive staffs might entertain you.

Solid place. Good service and quick food, and the food is fresh and not overly fried. It is somewhat of a tourist clientele, possibly given the location and fact that it's fish and chips. But definitely not a tourist trap, since the service and food here delivers in a way that will satisfy you.
