Where To Get Food From The African Diaspora In Philly

"With island art on the wall, hanging chandeliers, and mannequins decked out in Trini carnival costumes, you would think Flambo is putting on a production you might find across the street at The Met. But unlike the opera house, you won’t have to keep reloading the Ticketmaster page to get your hands on an order of blackened shrimp sauteed in a buttery peppery sauce and stewed chicken drenched in a tomato sauce—they’re pretty open when it comes to reservations. When you stop by, go for the curry chicken dhalpuri. The takari dish wraps strips of chicken, chickpeas, and onions in a warm flatbread. " - candis mclean

The Best Center City SIPS Restaurants In Philly

"On summer Wednesdays at Dilworth Park, it’s perfectly acceptable to get intoxicated on the front lawn of the City Hall. But once you've seen that unhinged scene, you’re just going want a place to escape to. While Flambo isn't City Hall, their blackened shrimp should be a Philly institution. Head here for a plate of them, along with lightly fried wings and curry mussels. " - candis mclean

The 17 Best Caribbean Restaurants In Philly

"With island art on the wall, colorful chandeliers, and mannequins decked out in Trini carnival costumes, you would think Flambo is putting on a production you might find across the street at The Met. Luckily, you won’t have to keep reloading the Ticketmaster page to get your hands on an order of blackened shrimp sauteed in a buttery, peppery sauce and stewed chicken drenched in a tomato sauce—the Center City spot is pretty open when it comes to reservations. Google
I ordered about 5 platters and this was the worse food I've ever tasted at any restaurant. I was given two drumsticks for each platter (was told by a woman that answered the phone all they had were drumsticks ).I ordered curry(watered down no taste, fried chicken (old oil),jerk chicken,oh the macaroni salad saturated with vinegar? The only thing edible were the greens.Keep your money!Don't eat hear there were many disappointed people in my house !

Dee Marie

Google
Immediately no! The salmon is dry as a camels rear end! The shrimp were overcooked. The rice wasn’t my favorite, the cabbage I’ll give a 5. The yams were good because I don’t like them sweet. Never will go back

Gloria Delgado

Google
Food nasty no flavor yams dry barely any meat on the oxtails just all fat. Mac n cheese dry no flavor barely anything in the container. Just horrible horrible horrible I wouldn’t feed this to a stray animal!

Mark

Google
How can I seriously consider getting expensive Jamaican food if my entire $30 meal has no sauce. The driest food I have ever ate in my entire life. The yams were dry and bland. The rice was dry as the desert and the Mac was dry and hard. I feel like I got scammed out of my money.

Google
We loved the mac n cheese, it was delicious and hands down the best carrot cake we've had in a while. The rice and beans and collard greens were solid. The stewed chicken could have had more gravy (just got a spoonful besides what was on the chicken) so couldn't use on rice or greens. The portion sizes were large and appropriated. Pretty good overall!

Yesterday I ordered A platter of your fish, macaroni and cheese, rice, and beans The owner took my call. I just wanted to verify that my order went through because it was my first time ordering through delivery. It was very rude. They messed up my order. That’s why I was calling to verify they gave me dry rice and beans, the macaroni and cheese, taste like a box flavorless platter. I thought I was be safe by just ordering what I usually order. I don’t try the macaroni and cheese once in a blue because is. Always taste horrible I asked for oxtail gravy they give me dry rice and beans. The fish was the only thing that was good so I paid $40 for three pieces of fried fish. This place is so rude and they act like their food did not take a plunge through the years, I remember when they first opened their Chef was amazing. They only have certain things on their menu. That is good the fried fish, dry rice and beans with oxtail gravy when they use and their jerk, wings and pepper steak that the quality has gone down the drain they give you what they want to give you. It looks like when you do delivery I have ordered so many times and they have forgotten my , extra container of gravy and I pay for it when family members order online you don’t get what you pay for

Google
Received my order from door dash and my oxtails had not an ounce of gravy. Then I called and the lady going to tell me there is gravy and then when I told her no there is not gravy at all and acted like she didn't hear me

Choc Lit

Google

Yelp
The BEST Jamaican takeout only spot in the Logan community!!! The food is just amazing. So flavorful. The jerk chicken has a small mild kick to it but soo good and full of spice. For people who can't handle any spice, I would recommend the fried chicken, crispy on the outside and juicy on the inside. Just smelling the platters as they come out is enough to make my mouth water. Make sure to ask for extra jerk sauce/gravy to be pour over your chicken and rice. It's a small take out spot with not much room to stand or wait. My recommendation is to call ahead to place a order and come back after they give you an estimated time. There's always a line so expect to wait close to 30-60 minutes (maybe a bit longer when peak hours like lunch and dinner).

Yelp
The food is really good. The flavors are amazing and the plantains are everything just not 5 stars because the portion sizes are not consistent. The second time I ordered the amount of chicken was small and mainly bones

Briana H.

Yelp
the service was very slow despite the fact that I was the only person in there, the cashier was very distracted and asked my order multiple times (1 platter). once I got my food and got back to work I was 2 forkfuls in before noticing a long black hair in my chicken. I was very disappointed so I called and emailed with no response.

Yelp
For $16 ‍ you get what you pay for I guess. The rice was mushy, brown gravy bland, candied yams needed a lot of love. The fish wasn't crispy. The whole meal needed a lot of love and care lol. 5 outta 10

Yelp
I moved to philly in 2019 from queens and have been looking for Caribbean food that was as good or better than what I had been used to. After plenty of fails I have finally found somewhere that has the food, service and spice that I like. I had the brown stew chicken, rice and peas and cabbage and it was to die for! The serving size for the prices was great as well. So happy this place is within walking distance because I will be a regular!

Yelp
I know it's Covid and all but the food I just received was not at all up to par. I am so dissatisfied. The way the explanation of how this fried chicken would be, made my mouth water. I was so excited. The picture attached is exactly how it came. Scraps of chicken that seemed like it was microwaved the next day. Damn, I was hungry too. I guess I should of known better not to order soul food from a Caribbean establishment. Their forte is Caribbean. 25 dollars gone. Cabbage was good, rice and gravy was Ok. I'm so sad.

Yelp
Good food we travel from jersey to pa just to get some flavor spot 10/10 def would recommend I tried the jerk pork for the first time it was a bit spicy but nice.

Yelp
The name says it all! Great customer service, fresh, and beyond flavorful. If you're calling in your order, you may have to call a few times sometimes as it gets very busy, but it's definitely worth the wait! The oxtails, rice and peas, cabbage and plantain platter is the best. It's a large portion (two meals in one), so you will definitely have left overs if you order the large. The gravy is on point! The location is small so look out for the sign, busy area but there is usually free street parking available. Best Jamaican cuisine in town, enjoy!

Myha C.

Yelp
A couple of years ago this place was my goto. The guy chef used to be on the grill but now that he isn't there the jerk is baked. I can do that myself and it doesn't taste the same. Food portion has gotten smaller too

Yelp
Enjoying some curry chicken, stew chicken and oxtail platters with the family. First time trying this spot. Abundance of food.

Yelp
If I could get this place zero stars I would. Now I have my fair shar Jamaican food and I could tell you that this was one of the worst disgusting pieces of food I ever taste. I wasted $23 on a oxtail platter Their food is gross

Yelp
Wow. This food is sooooo good! I'm writing this from the car as I devour my whiting platter with rice and beans and cabbage. My gf got the curried shrimp and everything is amazing! Definitely the best food we had in a while. We drove from west philly. You won't be disappointed!
google avatar

Neechy R.

Yelp
Food was horrible,! Jerk chicken was dried baked chicken , with no sauce. Rice and peas no flavor ,bland and dry. We ordered three large platters , and all three platters were awful, don't be deceived by the pictures like I was! First and last time patronizing this place. I spent 41.00 for garbage . Never again....
google avatar

Natasha S.

Yelp
Ordered my food and it came hot and on time. Two platters were ordered, ox tails and curry shrimp. Sides were peas and rice, cabbage, sweet plantains and sweet fried dumplings. Everything was delicious and definitely worth the price although I originally wanted the escovitch fried whiting, but was told they were out. I was very happy with my alternative choice and will be going back to get the fish. Great food!!

Yelp
The only bright spot in our quarantine routine is our Friday Night Food Delivery and tonight was especially dazzling. I had the Ova De Top Chicken and it was wholly worthy of the name! The hubs felt the same about his shrimp curry. We rounded it out with rice and beans, plantains, and sweet potatoes. Fabulous dinner in a week with few bright spots. Thanks!

Yelp
I've been eating here since 2014. The food is delicious & flavorable. I can appreciate a business who delivers consistency. Everytime I order from Flavor Spot, the food is just as good and/or better than the time before. The service is excellent and I highly recommend the entire menu.

Yelp
You guys I'm so sorry I forgot to take a picture of my food however I got the curry chicken rice and beans and okra are usually get the cabbage which is still ultimately my absolute favorite vegetable here your grill was good but not better than the cabbage they have a lunch special during the week which I believe is from 11 to 3 and I think it's five dollars I miss the special this day however I was still happy pay my $12 they didn't have plantains at the time so I was a little bit disappointed however my food was still magnificent I have eaten here I can't tell you how many times and I will continue to eat here also a fun fact about the believers that is it was featured on the Food Network for one of those shoes where they go around and try great food yes their food is good make sure you try them

Yelp
Soooooo good! I ordered the Granny Style Stew Chicken with rice and beans and greens. It was amazing. Maybe the best brown stew chicken I've ever had. Very flavorful. A tad bit spicy but I like it like that! My favorite part of the meal. I asked for extra gravy on the rice and it was also amazing. The greens were good too but not the best I've had. I would def order again.

Yelp
What could I possibly say about this place? It's a little corner spot... that unless you really paid attention you would miss. But it's an amazing place to get great food. To say that their curry chicken gives the perfect match of fire an smoothness would be an understatement. Their cabbage is like .... man there are no words. I could literally survive off of the cabbage and rice for the rest of my life and never be disappointed.... if your ever oh Philly on Broad... check them out... you won't be disappointed

Yelp
It is a small local spot where I live. When the store is open before everything happened causing only take out orders, the food is normally delicious and portions are generous and food is fresh and delicious. Since there have been only take out orders, the service and quality of food is horrible! I called in a large oxtail platter, with rice with oxtail gravy and cabbage. I was told 35 minutes. I waited 45 minutes and went to the door to see if my order was ready. There was a young girl working and I told her my name and my order. The regular employees were not there. They are normally friendly and they care about their customers. She said oh well there are other orders before you so wait. I went back to my car to wait, and returned 10 minutes later. When I finally got my order, there were only 5 oxtails and they were rubbery and small. The rice was old and the cabbage was tough. The food was warm not hot. I went back to tell the woman I was unhappy and I wanted to get another platter. Nothing was eaten from the first platter given to me. She said no refunds. So I wasted my time and my money and had to go somewhere else to get dinner!!! Horrible experience!

Yelp
Let me start off by saying I looove Jamaican food! First time coming to this location and let me tell you I'm hooked, it tastes like somebody's Caribbean grandma made it, you can taste the ancestors way of seasoning lol Very authentic Dare I say the food is better than my beloved Jamaican Ds, Very pleasantly surprised !

Ashley j.

Yelp
I ordered jerk chicken, rice and beans and greens I asked for extra spicy and they nailed it food was amazing I definitely will be coming back thankyou

Johnny S.

Yelp
Unfortunately, it's been my experience that Jamaican restaurants tend to over cook their meats. Maybe it's cultural. However, I ordered a fish platter and I was told it would be 25 minutes because fish is made to order. I precisely told the girl over the phone not to fry my fish hard. When I picked up my order, the fish (head was still on--maybe that's cultural too), was fried so hard, it was inedible. That was a total waste of money. My friend ordered the jerk chicken. It too was overcooked and dry. Every Jamaican restaurant I've ever been to cook their meat the same way. Until I find one that can cook meat, I'll never go to another one.

Yelp
Jerk Chicken Is Very Dry, The Potato Salad Is So Bland It's Disgusting and the Oxtails Are Tuff
google avatar

Tenneisha B.

Yelp
I like that the prices aren't too high and you get s lot for what you pay for. I usually get the fry chicken which is always good. My only issue is when you ask for extra gravy they soak the rice in gravy to the point you can't it anymore. Overall I like this place.

Yoseefa G.

Yelp
10s 10s 10s . I get delivery. On doordash. Great food! I'v tried so far the granny style stew chicken, fried chicken, curry chicken, rice and peas, cabbage, greens, Mac and cheese, plantains, coco bread and sweet potatoes. All so good. Unique and flavorful for sure. ( I did try the baked chicken. I think it tastes more like sweet bbq and is not my fav to be fair) but that's it. It's all good.

Tassari R.

Yelp
First off the customer service is above all Jamaican restaurant in Philly. The food is great, especially prices are affordable. I always get fish cooked to order never disappoint and my friends that eat meat has never had a problem. There are two locations check them out.

Susan T.

Yelp
If you are used to eating real Jamaican food you would know this is the best tasting Jamaican food around, very tasty, I only eat at the flavor spot
