I can't stop thinking about Fox and Hounds, even though it is a grimy, ugly bar. How did I live in DC for 3+ years without knowing of this magical place where you get a glass full of booze for $6.40? It amounts to two drinks for the price of one -- perfect for a cheapass like me. The booze is accompanied by a mixer of your choice, which comes in one of those adorable mini-bottles. It's a bit difficult to mix your drink, as the glass is already overflowing with booze, so you just have to add a little bit at a time and sip accordingly. I had two gin & tonics which lulled me into such a devil-may-care state that I deigned to buy some Golden Grahams at 11:15pm afterward.
The service is really mean, or as my friend Anna says, "there's an S&M vibe." When I asked for another tonic even though I wasn't done with mine yet (I was trying to be prepared for future consumption), our waitress glared at me and asked, "Are you sure you want it now, or do you want it later?" with her tone implying that the latter choice was the only correct answer. Anyway, I didn't even mind because I was so into the $6.40 deal.
We also had a plate of really good nachos, which had a mix of yellow and, surprisingly, blue corn tortilla chips.
There is plentiful seating outside, such that on a unseasonably warm Friday night, we had no trouble finding a table for three people. I don't know that I would ever go to Fox & Hounds if I had to sit inside, since as I mentioned, it is grimy and ugly. However, I think it is perfect for al fresco chillaxing during warm spring and summer nights.
