The Most Lovable Dive Bars Around D.C. | Eater DC

"Heat lamps keep the patio at this inexpensive 17th Street bar bustling all winter long. Inside, bartenders pour generous drinks in a cozy bar room lined with vinyl booths. Happy hour lands weeknights starting at 3 p.m. with discounts on fresh oysters, sliders, and nachos, plus plenty of drink specials until 7 p.m. Friday nights call for rotating beer flights and burgers." - Tierney Plumb

Too hot today. Cold beer for the win. Good vibe here. Super chill. Gt seating outside.

I could not believe there was no air conditioning in this place. We sat outside. The grounds were not real clean but decent. Only one waitress and she was not attentive. We needed a table to sit six and she told me to set up my own table. A wide variety of music that I did appreciate. I declined to order food because it was way to hot inside to even consider asking someone to break a sweat over my food. Drinks were reasonably priced.

Google
Okay so Fox and Hounds is my favorite bar of all time and Nadia has changed my life without even knowing it. If you think about going anywhere else, change your mind. Loge you all!!

Google
It's long overdue that I give a well earned and deserved 5-Star review to the neighborhood's anchor. Simon, and all the staff here make you feel at home, the relaxed atmosphere, and stellar service truly makes the Fox and Hound "the bar" of this part of town.

Google
Outdoor patio has helpful plexiglass barrier with sidewalk. On a street with car-calming approach. Everyone liked their food except for the meatballs. Good music. Old school interior design. Bathrooms need some renovation. Budweiser Zero available, though they ran out. Too many TVs, though that's common these days.

Google
Friendly bar with access to the menu of a neighboring establishment. We only had drinks, which were inexpensive, so can't comment on the food.

Google
Meat lovers pizza was great. Drinks too. Nice staff!

Google
Absolutely love this place! Such a cozy environment. The outdoor patio is lovely. Amazing happy hour deals. The drinks were good. Our server was amazing - super sweet and great service! Will definitely return.

Yelp
I live in the neighborhood and have been meaning to come by since this spot seems like the cozy neighborhood bar and I was exactly right. The bartender was friendly and phenomenal. Great happy hour deals and huge bonus it lasts till 7. I felt very welcomed and all the staff encouraged me to come back, which I definitely will. I had the disco fries and they were very good! I'm very midwestern so was expecting skyline chili style and it's a little different but I like their twist. Great dish for the cold weather! I'll definitely come back for other food items It all looked very good. All the staff and the other patrons were very friendly which is exactly what you hope for in a neighborhood spot! All and all a great experience.

Yelp
Do not go here! At least, not tonight.... Sat down at the bar and the bartender was on his phone texting the whole time I was there. No acknowledgment I was there - nothing. I just got up and left - too many fun places in this area to waste time at this place.

Yelp
This is a small place inside but they do have outdoor seating. They have happy hour specials on the food and drinks. The cocktails were nothing special. Also definitely smelled in there but at least it was quiet enough to hear conversations. I would not go out of my way to go here since there are plenty of other bars around.

Yelp
My experience at Fox and Hounds was nothing short of fantastic, and a significant part of that can be credited to the outstanding service provided by Steve, the bartender. From the moment I took a seat at the bar, Steve's friendly and welcoming demeanor set the tone for a great evening. What truly stood out was Steve's genuine passion for mixology. His recommendations were spot-on, and the drinks he crafted were not only delicious but also a testament to his skill and creativity. It's evident that Steve takes pride in his craft, and it translates into an elevated experience for patrons. What I appreciated most, however, was Steve's ability to make each customer feel valued. Despite a busy night, he took the time to engage in friendly conversation, creating a sense of community within the bar. It's not just about the drinks at Fox and Hounds; it's about the people, and Steve embodies that spirit perfectly. In a world where customer service can sometimes be lacking, Steve's professionalism and genuine care for his patrons make him a standout bartender. If you find yourself at Fox and Hounds, seeking out Steve is a must for a memorable and enjoyable time. Cheers to Steve for making my night at Fox and Hounds one to remember!!!

Yelp
I came here with my coworkers for hangout, and it did not disappoint. Great vibes, love the patio, and the service was great. The happy hour specials were phenomenal, and you can get quite a bit of food + drinks for a very reasonable price (considering the location). Lastly, the bathroom was very clean (always a plus!) I wouldn't hesitate to come here again for happy hour!

Yelp
The perfect, unpretentious, cozy neighborhood bar. The staff is friendly (Simon is a sweetheart), the drinks are ~extremely~ strong, there's a nice mix of regulars + newcomers, just good vibes all around. My favorite place to stop in, have a beer, and maybe meet some characters.

Apaar J.

Yelp
I've only lived in DC for 3 days and I've spent 2 nights here and met only awesome people. Interesting crowd and amazing service. Ali and Simon are absolute beauties - attentive as all hell. Attached to a restaurant as well so the food hits.
google avatar

Alissa T.

Yelp
Stopped in here for a drink while we were waiting to get seated at Astoria DC down the block and had a great experience! Plenty of seating options - there's a bar area as well as a dining area and plenty of TVs if you're looking to catch something on the screen. The service was also awesome and everyone super friendly! Our server was so attentive and kind, he enough was a reason for us to rate this place 5 stars. If we lived closer, I think this place would be a regular stop for us - a great neighborhood sports bar joint. We didn't try the food, but the menu looked pretty expansive and drinks were affordable!

Yelp
I've been to this spot with my Pokemon Go buddy enough to give it a full rundown. It's located at the heart of the hustle and bustle of 17th, and has plenty of indoor and outdoor seating! They've got happy hour, they've got regulars who are super friendly and know each other, they've got friendly bartenders, they've got it all! There are always good tunes playing and there are plenty TVs, so you are more than likely to find something to watch if you don't have friends keeping you occupied! I really wish there was a place right around the corner I could go to that felt like this one. I think it's time for me to do some local exploring!

Yelp
I don't really venture out to sports bars that much but we went here since astoria was closed. It's definitely an outdoor kind of spot since the inside seating was relatively sparse. The drinks were super strong and pretty reasonable cost. I don't know if that's your cup of tea but if it is this is the place. The music was not bad but not very good -- it's just loud. The service was fast and I would maybe come back again.

Marc W.

Yelp
A blast simon and tony are awesome great tunes always . great mussels garlic bread is amazing .

Yelp
If you're looking for a laid-back spot to grab a drink with friends, look no further than Fox and Hound. This dive bar has a cozy and welcoming atmosphere, with dim lighting and an eclectic mix of decorations that give it a unique and charming vibe. But what really sets Fox and Hound apart from other bars is its outstanding bartenders. TJ, Erick, and Simon are truly the best you could ask for. Not only are they incredibly friendly and attentive, but they also know their drinks inside and out. Whether you're in the mood for a classic cocktail or something a little more offbeat, they'll be able to whip up something that hits the spot. But it's not just their mixology skills that make these guys stand out. They're also great conversationalists, always ready with a joke or a story to share. And when the bar gets busy, they're total pros at keeping things moving smoothly. Overall, if you're looking for a great night out in DC, Fox and Hound is definitely worth a visit. And if you're lucky enough to have TJ, Erick, or Simon behind the bar, you're in for an extra special treat. Cheers to them and the entire Fox and Hound team for running such a fantastic spot!

Samuel B.

Yelp
What a great neighborhood bar , my friend and I stopped in on a cloudy day and this place definitely brightened me up . Great drinks and I can't forget Rebecca's warm service and smile. Will be back ! Thanks !!!

Tom P.

Yelp
Hey hey what really sets Fox and Hound apart is the atmosphere. It's the kind of place where you can come with a group of friends and feel like you're hanging out in someone's living room. The decor is cozy and inviting, with plenty of comfortable seating and dim lighting that sets the mood for a relaxed evening. And with a great selection of beer, wine, and spirits, there's something for everyone. Whether you're looking for a spot to grab a drink after work or a place to spend a lazy weekend afternoon, Fox and Hound is the perfect choice. With its friendly staff, amazing bartenders like Erick, TJ, and Simon, and laid-back atmosphere, it's a bar that you'll want to visit time and time again.

Yelp
Fox & Hounds isn't what it used to be. It used to be the quintessential dive bar in Dupont. I previously wrote about how they were known for their cheap drinks. If you'd order a vodka soda, you'd get a glass full of vodka, and a bottle of club soda on the side. The food was your standard greasy bar food. Great? No, but you knew exactly what you were expecting when you ordered it. Fox & Hounds was a great spot to go with friends if you were looking to have a low key chill night out without breaking the bank. I spent several years holding court on the patio here during Pride. Apparently at some point they were bought by new owners who are evidently trying to class up the joint. Gone are the cheap glasses full of vodka. Instead they have a signature craft cocktail menu. Gone are the $8 chicken fingers. Instead they have a $26 pork chop. None of this necessarily bad. But Fox & Hounds is just another bar now, nothing special about the place. Well, the patio is still pretty nice. But this isn't Fox & Hounds anymore.

Yelp
Fox and hounds is a great sports bar to just chill. If you want somewhere for you and your friends to just hang out without stuffy waiters come here. The owners are super chill and if Nadia's there she's always the sweetest. If you're coming here looking for a 5 star restaurant you're at the wrong place. You come here for a nice dive bar with cozy vibes and tvs all over.

Andrew C.

Yelp
Brian our server make this place! Awesome service - great bar food- drinks are good and strong! The ambiance was good! Typical bar - but A+ all around!
google avatar

Yolanda B.

Yelp
Does this place smell a bit weird? Yes! Was Simon an amazing bartender? Also yes! Great spot to sit and think about all your childhood trauma whilst drinking a great cocktail and thinking about all the wrong you have done. Though I didn't bring my kids here, it was a great place to drink away my worries at noon. Will be back, and also front! Xoxo

Amanda S.

Yelp
Simon was AMAZING on a Saturday afternoon. Espresso martinis were A+. Service was friendly. Will be coming back next time I'm in DC.

Yelp
This restaurant is a great neighborhood place for excellent happy hour deals, and great service! One of the highlights was Nadia, a server that not only was attentive, but also invested in my experience being the best possible. I mention some allergies I had, and she went out of her way to make sure that what I ordered was not only right for me, but right for everybody at the table. I could not be happier with my experience, and if you ever come here, please look for Nadia.
google avatar

Ed L.

Yelp
Not particularly good. Would skip if you can. Really not a sports bar just a small place with a few tvs.
google avatar

Terrell R.

Yelp
This was a pretty chill bar in northwest DC. There's a small bar area when you walk in with more tables and seating in the room adjacent to it. They also have a pretty large patio area that extends for most of the block it's on. I stopped in for happy hour on a Wednesday, wasn't too crowded mostly "regulars" at the bar as the rest of the customers were in the patio area. Service was pretty good the bartender seemed to be managing both the bar and the outside tables fairly well. Happy hour there runs from 4-7pm with $2 off all beers, $5 wine, half off rail and signature cocktails, and even half off on the bar food. They offer your typical bar items nachos, wings, burgers, mozzarella sticks, in addition to other items like oysters, mussels, and crab cakes. I tried out the bbq wings and had a few whiskey cocktails. I didn't really have high hopes for the food but I was pleasantly surprised by the flavor and quality of the wings, and the drinks were solid as well. Overall a really nice, quiet neighborhood bar to pop into and grab a stiff drink and a few bites to eat without breaking the bank.

Yelp
The wait staff is fabulous....Simon, Eric, Natasha all are 1st rate. For drinks, my favorite place.

Tammy Feicht F.

Yelp
Stop in and see Simon. He is one of the hardest working individuals my husband and I have ever encountered. One of those teammates you would like to have....no need to ask the job gets done (we witnessed it). He didn't stand around when there were 2,3 or 4 customers he was cleaning bar mats, windows, stocking, cutting garnish for drinks. I wish we as business folks had more Simons!
google avatar

Derek L.

Yelp
Edit: Owner did not want to own up to this and never replied, and even filed for a complaint. However, in my opinion, there is a very hostile sever that seemed particularly racist. My friends were of color, and the server did not want to serve us anything even though we sat down that night. Said server was also drunk and he was drinking beer on the job... I absolutely do not think that his actions are professional at all. It speaks even MORE VOLUME of how they decided to complain about my review when I was stating that if this establishment is hiring someone to serve who is unable to be professional and provide equal service to all, it speaks a lot about how much they value the community. Apart from feeling sidelined, this server is one of the rudest I've ever met. Never visit this bar!
google avatar

Yelp
This is a neighborhood spot. Many locals and many regulars. I've been coming for years. Nadia is an absolute sweetheart. They have a great outdoor patio. Perfect for happy hours or late night. COVID has been tough on everyone. So many dive bars are closed. Nice to come to a friendly spot where they treat you like family. Food is decent with entrees like salmon and steak as well as tasty pasta and meatballs, burgers, fish and chips, wings, nachos and other bar fare. Cool jukebox, music loving crowd. Simon always pours a good drink.
google avatar

Susan E.

Yelp
Eric the bartender is attentive and bring great vibes. The Ambience is a good place to chat and chill outside and inside of the restaurant. This is a place that's highly recommended. The food is good as well!

Yelp
This one star review is for my experience last night alone. I've been to Fox & Hound many times but last nights experience was something. There was a female bartender (who was later rumored to be the daughter of the owner?) who had a serious attitude problem. She yelled at the other staff and yelled at the customers. It was a busy night due to the high heeled race. But her attitude and temper tantrums were uncalled for. She was demoralizing to her fellow staff and down right rude to customers. As a bartender myself, she shouldn't be allowed near any sort of hospitality establishment. I feel bad for your staff that had to work with her last night because she was an absolute monster. People left the bar because of her so a lot of business was lost. My advice, keep her far away from any bar and if you need help on busy nights get someone with a sense of decency & humanity,

Susan G.

Yelp
I've been coming here for over 40 years and this place has gone downhill in the last few weeks! Running out of basic things like Miller Light, certain food, opening late for lack of staff. No attention to details. Patio not kept clean like others in the hood. No management on premises. Sad. Such a great venue.

Susan G.

Yelp
A great neighborhood sports bar. Good drinks, food and service. Most all sports on TV. Good patio, great for people watching. Parking very limited on entire street. Walking in is best choice.

Rob Y.

Yelp
Nadia might be the worst waitress in the history of the galaxy. She rolled her eyes when I asked for the drink menu, took 20 minutes to bring our drinks, spilled the drinks on our friend without acknowledging it, walked away when we were about to order, and was an extremely rude individual. The world would be a better place without her in the world of serving tables.
google avatar

Chenée T.

Yelp
Probably the worst service I have ever gotten at a bar/ restaurant. Upon sitting down and orderIng food, our waitress got upset with us because we were sticking with water for the time being and tried to pressure us into oRdering drinKs saying "this is a bar. Not a restaurant, so you should order a drink." I immediately got up and left and told her I was never returning. She was so rude and presumptuous and should be fired for the way she treats customers. Also begs the question of why this places clearly serves dinner food if they are going to have waitresses that reprimand you for ordering dinner food. Do yourself a favor and do not come here. Heed the other one star reviews and stay away.
google avatar

Sam C.

Yelp
I went here hoping to watch football and enjoy some bar food and beer. Unfortunately, they took about 30 minutes to bring out nachos and wings - considering the restaurant was pretty much empty that seems absurd. The waiter never checked on us or offered refills on the waters (although he made sure to keep asking if we wanted more beer). When we asked to see the menu for more food he brought out the wrong menu (breakfast) and seemed upset when we pointed it out. He was quite rude and this might have been the worst service I've received. I should have listened to the other reviews on here.

Elena A.

Yelp
Eric!!! Super chill helpful dude /bartender Amazing service I felt safe here only because of him, Eric cares about you getting home safe Thank you ERiC
google avatar

Michael W.

Yelp
Got a pitcher of beer to enjoy outside with friends. Solid neighborhood spot. Also one of these few places that is open late (outdoor till midnight and indoors till 2am)
google avatar

Darius B.

Yelp
One of the best neighborhood bars around. Hopefully Nadia is working when you arrive, she is the best!! And Simon is a wonderful Bartender! The Staff is GREAT AND FRIENDLY!!! So glad the bar is back up and running. Welcome BACK !!!!!!
google avatar

Isabel D.

Yelp
Great happy hour deals!! The inside smelled a bit like urine the first time I went so I always make sure to sit outside but the drinks are good and the food is always good too. Service could be a bit faster but overall, great place to go for a beer!
google avatar

Nate D.

Yelp
Without a doubt the worst service I've ever had in DC. We had to practically beg the waitresses to take our orders in between their constant cigarette breaks in the alleyway.
google avatar

Alan I.

Yelp
Dope little bar with very friendly staff. Nadia took great care of my friends and I by checking in on us constantly. Drinks were awesome and very affordable. Great place to wind down late night. I definitely recommend this place.
google avatar

Billie K.

Yelp
I'm an actor and originally came to this bar after a show one night. This place has quickly become home for me. Even performing now in Virginia I still try to come as often as possible after shows. This bar has the kindest, most welcoming staff I've experienced. They are always so attentive and create an environment that makes you want to stay all the way until closing. There are three bartenders in rotation that will never leave you hanging. Moncef, Nadia and Simon always take care of me. One night after getting out of the show late Nadia went out of her way to make sure I could still get food. Moncef always makes sure we can place our food orders and is ALWAYS on top of the music and Simon never leaves us without anything. If you're looking for a good experience and want to end your evening happy and feeling care for THIS. IS. THE. PLACE.
google avatar

Jennifer S.

Yelp
came here to watch a ravens game and had a blast. the staff is very friendly and attentive. Plus the outdoor seating is perfect and spaced out, which I haven't been seeing a lot of places do. Even the other customers were nice, maybe this places just brings awesome people to it haha. Anyways I'd def comeback for another ravens game.
google avatar

Dave L.

Yelp
It was a Saturday night, so it was crowded as-expected but they still managed to have ample seating - our party (13 people, to grow to 15 by the end) managed to be seated quickly. Their interior reminded me of a diner. They have several spacious outdoor patios, and we sat on the one along 17th, talking and people-watching. We had an unfriendly waitress and suffered through sloth-like service since we were too lazy to go elsewhere. I ordered an Oreo milkshake which wasn't bad and did a kamikaze shot which wasn't too strong, but otherwise okay. Can't really recommend the place, but if you get slow service, don't say I didn't warn you.

Julianna S.

Yelp
Izzy was amazing! He was prompt and attentive. Simon was awesome, too! I never looked for a refill or wondered where my order was. Friendly and fast. I wish we lived closer. Burgers were perfection. You can really tell the difference between grilled burger and a CHARGRILLED burger. If I lived in DC, I would be a regular here. Wonderful service. Awesome food. MUST visit!

Yelp
I can't stop thinking about Fox and Hounds, even though it is a grimy, ugly bar. How did I live in DC for 3+ years without knowing of this magical place where you get a glass full of booze for $6.40? It amounts to two drinks for the price of one -- perfect for a cheapass like me. The booze is accompanied by a mixer of your choice, which comes in one of those adorable mini-bottles. It's a bit difficult to mix your drink, as the glass is already overflowing with booze, so you just have to add a little bit at a time and sip accordingly. I had two gin & tonics which lulled me into such a devil-may-care state that I deigned to buy some Golden Grahams at 11:15pm afterward. The service is really mean, or as my friend Anna says, "there's an S&M vibe." When I asked for another tonic even though I wasn't done with mine yet (I was trying to be prepared for future consumption), our waitress glared at me and asked, "Are you sure you want it now, or do you want it later?" with her tone implying that the latter choice was the only correct answer. Anyway, I didn't even mind because I was so into the $6.40 deal. We also had a plate of really good nachos, which had a mix of yellow and, surprisingly, blue corn tortilla chips. There is plentiful seating outside, such that on a unseasonably warm Friday night, we had no trouble finding a table for three people. I don't know that I would ever go to Fox & Hounds if I had to sit inside, since as I mentioned, it is grimy and ugly. However, I think it is perfect for al fresco chillaxing during warm spring and summer nights.

Emilio R.

Yelp
This used to be a neighborhood staple. Used to be cheap and heavy pours. Old school. They haven't changed shit. Haven't invested shit back into their place. BUT! Now apparently we've gone from $3 for rail to EIGHT dollars for rail. But same shitty wait staff. Same MASSIVE attitude. But now I'm paying double for it. Avoid. DC gone wrong. This place sucks.

Myles C.

Yelp
I had high hopes for this seemingly neighborhoodly sports bar. The service was horrible, with a 45 minute delay before our nachos were delivered. Despite sitting at a table in this half full lounge, the server came by only to ask us if we wanted more drinks once and never refilled our waters. They gave us the incorrect menu, and aggressively took it away without asking if we wanted anything else. No thank you or niceties were there when we paid the check either. The atmosphere was also very unpleasant, with one loud and rough group basically taking over numerous tables for a literary discussion in this sports bar. Also, many people came in and out of the restaurant for 5-10 minutes just to catch a glimpse of the football game without ordering anything. I will never come here again, and strongly discourage all from trying it.
google avatar

Deborah D.

Yelp
A local bar with a friendly bartender. Listened to good music and good conversation. I will be back next time I'm here in DC
google avatar

Tina S.

Yelp
I've been coming to Fox and Hounds for the past year or two and absolutely love it as a go-to relaxed bar experience. It's not the best for quick service but great if you're not in a rush and looking to relax. The beer selection is pretty good and the place tends to have a great atmosphere (the main drive for the 5 stars), food is average. Great for happy hour or a nice day to sit outside.
google avatar

M C.

Yelp
Food was great. Service, absolutely terrible! Long story short; food 5* and service tonight 1* which equals 3*.
google avatar

Dani G.

Yelp
We received the worst service at this establishment. We walked in and asked if they could change one of the tvs to tennis and the bartender said yes. We had to ask another three times and wait about ten minutes before she changed it. We then had to wait another 5 minutes before she took our drink order. There was only one bartender and one server and the bartender was doing her best, but the server never came to us and never waited on us. We decided to leave since they didn't seem to want our business.
