"Originally constructed in 1886, the building for this elegant five-room boutique inn went through a few different iterations asa private home and a small hospital before earning its National Historic status in the 1970s. But about 50 years ago when the hospital shut down, it fell into disrepair. Enter new owners Dina and Richard Dwyer. World travelers themselves, the Dwyers brought their expertise in design and construction and spent about four years renovating the building, which they opened in fall 2018. The property has an onsite pool, an outdoor fire pit, and is a short walk to shops and restaurants in downtown Calistoga. Guest rooms are elegant, with plenty of natural light, and bathrooms feature high-tech Toto toilets—all wonderful to return to after a day exploring Napa Valley . Breakfasts are a delight, too: ingredients are fresh (you might even get some herbs from their garden!) and Dina takes pride in highlighting local and regional purveyors. The beautifully appointed living and dining room—as well as Richard and Dina’s welcoming hospitality—will make travelers feel right at home."

An unforgettable stay! The Francis House is truly one of the most special and beautifully restored places we've ever stayed. From the moment we arrived, we were treated with such warmth and attention to detail—it felt more like visiting an elegant private home than a hotel. The historic building is stunning, inside and out. Every space has been thoughtfully designed, combining modern luxury with historic charm. Our room was spotless and incredibly comfortable. We especially loved the peaceful pool area and the delicious, homemade breakfast each morning. The location is perfect—just a short walk to downtown Calistoga, yet tucked away enough to feel private and serene. The staff clearly take pride in creating a one-of-a-kind experience. Their passion shows in every little detail. We left feeling pampered, relaxed, and already dreaming of our next visit. Highly, highly recommend!

I am delayed in writing this but my need to still write it, two months later, shows how utterly impressed we were by Robert and the staff at The Francis House. From before we arrived and then throughout our stay, Robert and his staff, went above and beyond to make sure we were comfortable and had the best stay possible. Robert emailed us suggestions in the Napa Valley (which we used and appreciated!) and he made reservations for us at a couple of wineries and, being guests at The Francis House, we were treated like VIPs. The property is stunning, the rooms beautiful and comfortable, the food delicious and the amenities were excellent. I got sick on the last day and needed to stay on property and the care and concern I received meant a great deal. My husband and I highly recommend this property!

This secluded, but centrally located property offered an amazing breakfast, beautiful accommodations and an overall wonderful experience. The pool was relaxing. The staff cheerfully greeted us every morning with local coffee and fresh, gourmet meals. The beds were exquisite and we slept very well after busy days running around the valley for tastings. We would definitely recommend this property and hope to stay here again in the future!

One of the most unique and charming gems of the wine country. Exquisite decor, private setting, delicious artisan breakfasts, and an attentive staff that goes above and beyond to make one's stay in Calistoga truly exceptional. Robert booked reservations for us at outstanding restaurants in Napa and St. Helena, and Ehler Winery for a VIP tasting. At each place, we were warmly greeted and experienced first-class service. We treasured our time here, whether it was sleeping in the comfortable beds or lounging by the pristine poolside, and we look forward to our return soon.

The antidote to stress/anxiety? The Francis House!!||Beautiful room, beautiful grounds. Lovely delicious breakfast. They had a recommended list of restaurants. We went to the two favorites of Robert’s, our host. Both excellent. Calistoga a sweet buzzy village. ||It was a special weekend. The Francis House is the quintessential spot for making memories.

We had an amazing stay at The Francis House! All of the staff are so welcoming and accommodating, and genuinely seem to love where they work. They went above and beyond to make us feel at home. The house and grounds are beautiful, and the location is perfect for walking to dinner or drinks in downtown Calistoga. We would absolutely stay again, thank you for a wonderful trip!

Wonderful stay. Literally a few blocks away from downtown Calistoga. We thoroughly enjoyed being able to walk to everything. Shopping, restaurants, bars, etc.. Staff was gracious and attentive. Robert, the onsite manager, went over and above. Room was outstanding with super comfortable bed. Amazing breakfast every morning. Will definitely return. A very unique and historical property.

2 star review averaged from 1 star for pre-trip stress and 3 stars for stay. Pre-trip experience: I have a confirmed stay booked for early March for my honeymoon. I booked the hotel due to its consistent 5 star reviews. However, I am already disappointed in the customer service. I have been trying to contact the house to confirm our stay and book a couples massage for over 3 months. The phone number on the website is disconnected and my multiple emails and Instagram message have gone unanswered. I see from other reviews that they are still in business and have had an ownership change, but I am dreading my stay and wish I had booked elsewhere, especially for the price and such an important milestone trip. Post-trip update: We completed our stay in early March 2025. I can confirm that the property is operational, still in business, and is being maintained. A few days after my first review, the Francis House updated the phone number on google maps & instagram. A few days before our stay, we were put in contact with a property manager who welcomed us onsite with a brief tour. Beyond the welcome tour, contact with an onsite manager was minimal and it wasn't clear if/when someone was available. My e-mails and messages were still never answered. It felt very much like we were on our own. For the pros: the rooms were nice, the location was exactly what we wanted, and the freshly prepared breakfast by a hired chef was delicious. Overall thoughts: After our 3-night stay at Francis House, we stayed at another small B&B in the area which was the same price for 4 nights, on-site concierge, and a full on-site spa. I would explore all options when booking a Napa/Sonoma trip. Overall, I would classify Francis House as acceptable and a tad overpriced.

Yelp
Wow - what a beautiful experience! A hidden gem that feels like you're staying at a private estate. Luxury accommodations, amenities and service - and all conveniently located to the beautiful wineries of the northern Napa valley. Dina & Richard are consummate hosts, making sure you have everything you need - we felt so welcome from the moment we arrived! We enjoyed the sparkling pool and the beautiful breakfast on the tree-covered side terrace every morning. But most of all, we appreciated Dina's impeccable suggestions for wine tasting and dining. This is what truly made our trip over the top amazing. THANK YOU Dina & Richard for such a special, memorable trip. We can't wait to return.

Yelp
I can't believe there aren't more ratings of this place. I found a deal on TripAdvisor and decided to take them up on the December special. Little did I know it was the catalyst for a fantastic trip. Richard, Dina, and Chelsea were wonderful hosts. We could talk to them for hours. I showed up early so I could get oriented with the facilities, since my gf was driving separately and arriving late. It turns out we had the entire home to ourselves the first couple of nights. All of the decor, fixtures, etc are expertly curated and make for a stunning retro-modern take on this 1886 structure. We've traveled to Europe and all over California and this is truly a gem that I must've passed by hundreds of times without realizing. The rooms are gorgeous and clean both literally and in style. The bidets have ruined us because I already bought two for our own home. The common areas are beautiful and cozy. Since it's so cold now and most shops in town close at 5pm, it's a perfect place to spend time. Normally, when we vacation, we like to be out as much as possible, but we were very content enjoying the house. It's tucked away 2 block from the main drag, but it's very easy to walk into town, but just secluded enough for a nice, quiet, respite. We weren't prepared for the quality of breakfast served each morning, either. Normally, from a B&B, you expect a generic continental type, but here, it's really more personally crafted to your diet. There's no menu, but it's definitely restaurant quality in how it's served. It was too cold to take advantage of the pool and sauna, but I could see how we could enjoy coming back during warmer weather. You can tell Richard and Dina put everything into the renovation. There is no bad angle nor detail overlooked in the presentation. If you truly want a unique experience in the heart of wine country, check out The Francis House. What they've done to transform the property is incredible.

Yelp
This is not your father's B&B and five stars simply aren't enough. From the warm and friendly greeting to the gorgeous but unstuffy decor, and from the thoughtfully designed rooms to the insanely great breakfasts, look no further. Seriously. There are other very high-end hotels in the area, but they simply don't compare to Francis House. Richard and Dina go out of their way to make every aspect of your stay perfect. The stunning 19th-century building -- with a fascinating history, by the way -- is just a couple of blocks from the main drag. An easy stroll to Calistoga's restaurants, wine-tasting rooms, and vineyards. We're locals and wanted a mid-week stay-cation. We know the area well and have plenty of options. Take our advice, Francis House is your best bet. Honestly, if you're looking for a home base for a Napa getaway, stop looking right now and book your stay with Richard and Dina. You'll be glad you did!

Yelp
During our latest visit to Napa Valley, we stumbled upon The Francis House after our original Airbnb left us disappointed. What an incredible discovery! Tucked away in a quiet, secluded neighborhood in Calistoga, what lies behind the tall shrubbery and iron gates is truly a magical place with an amazing history and equally amazing curators, Richard and Dina Dwyer. Richard, a seasoned real-estate developer with a strong background in construction, and Dina, an incredible interior designer, combined their innate talents to not only restore The Francis House to its former glory, but created a space that is a feast for all your senses, and one which takes your breath away. The Francis House is truly a special place - Richard and Dina are impeccable and gracious hosts that go above and beyond to ensure your stay is perfect in every way. The architecture, design, and restoration of the residence and the property are bar none. The experience is elegant, yet relaxed, and the amenities and cuisine are delightful. Some say the best things in life are unexpected; The Francis House is truly an unexpected gem that we highly recommend!

Yelp
The Francis House was AMAZING! Richard and Dena are the epitome of perfect hosts! This is MORE than a B&B...even MORE than a luxury B&B! You are asked about dietary restrictions before you arrive...you are told about the interesting history of the home when you arrive...the aroma as soon as you enter is divine...fresh flowers every day in your room...you make friends at breakfast in the morning...every single detail has been shown love and attention down to the grate in the shower. I can not recommend this place to enough people! Thank you! We will be back!

Yelp
If I could give The Francis House more than 5 stars I would!! This stunningly beautiful B&B is unlike any place we've ever stayed and is absolutely magical from the moment you drive through the gates! Richard and Dina are the most gracious and kind hosts, you feel like you've made new friends by the time your stay is over. They have done such an amazing job restoring and renovating this property that you can't help but feel like you're at a luxurious French chateau. The attention to detail and design in every room of this property is a 10 out of 10!! They truly take care of everything, every last detail of our stay was perfection. They provide a delicious gourmet breakfast daily that was served in their peaceful outdoor dining area and even checked with us before we arrived to ask if we had any dietary restrictions. The grounds are so pretty as well, and we enjoyed their beautiful pool after a fun day of wine tasting and shopping as well as the cozy fire pit. I can't recommend this place enough and we were so sad to leave! Thank you Richard and Dina for your hospitality, The Francis House is a true gem!!

Yelp
If you are looking for a one of a kind experience look no further. My husband and I visited the Francis House this past weekend as a quick getaway before we have our baby. The Francis House is a Luxury Bed and Breakfast experience. Dina & Richard, the owners of the Francis House were amazing. Everything in and around the house was so carefully thought out and planned. You basically escape into a Parisian experience. The grounds are pristine as is the house itself. The details put into planning are amazing. The pool is heated, not too deep, and was perfect to enjoy on a hot day. Coffee, tea, and water were available 24/7. Breakfast was provided and was DELICIOUS every single day! Dina and Richard go above and beyond to accommodate their guests. From providing recommendations to ensuring everyone is doing well to making some of the best afternoon iced coffee I have had. We also made a few friends on the trip, which was soo awesome! I cannot say enough wonderful things about our experience at the Francis House. But if you are looking for a kid-free, relaxing, luxury getaway-look no further! You will be blown away by the amazing rooms, grounds, service, food, and attention to details just as I was!

Yelp
This place is a flawless gem. An utterly perfectly done restoration, enhanced by the meticulous hospitality of the owners, Dina and Richard. If you think you are jaded now, wait until you stay here. It is the pinnacle.

Yelp
My husband planned a weekend to Calistoga, and our accommodations for the weekend was The Francis House. Our stay has to be one of our top most memorable and favorite experiences we have had. The personal touches from Dina and Richard were truly unparalleled. From a personal greeting, to a fresh cooked breakfast in the morning. Everything about Francis House is deliberate and beautiful. We played tennis, enjoyed the sauna, the fire pit and the grounds. Now we can't wait to come back in summer and enjoy the pool and book a massage. Well worth the money, for a luxurious and unique experience.

Yelp
Dina & Rich have truly created such a special oasis. It was a cold rainy evening this past week when we arrived, and Rich walked out to greet us. As soon as you enter The Francis House you know that you have found something special. We were in awe of the pictures lining the front entry of how the "home" looked prior to Rich and Dina purchasing the property. The property has such a rich history and even more incredible that it's now shining in full glory again as it was abandoned for over 50 years. And shine it does. Not one expense has been spared. Dina has designed the space with such a comfortable elegance. We had a queen room facing the front fountain. We left the window cracked open at night to listen to the fountain, it was the perfect way to fall asleep. Not one detail hasn't been thought about. The bed. Amazing. The sheets. Perfection. The towels smelled like heaven. The bath products. Loved! The Dyson hair dryer. OMG. Now my husband wants one...thanks Rich & Dina. ;) The toilet. The best! We peeked into a few other rooms and you cannot go wrong. All of the rooms have the same stunning look and feel. Our morning started around 7:30 with my husband heading down for coffee for us. Rich made us the most amazing lattes from his beautiful Miele. Also, there is a self-serve station for tea/Nespresso off the dining room. It was so nice to come back in the later afternoon and have a cup of tea before a nap. Such a nice touch. After our morning coffee we would anticipate the 9 am breakfast extravaganza. Dina is the most amazing chef. I cannot believe she has not been formally trained. Breakfast was our favorite meals the entire trip. Breakfast risotto, popovers with homemade strawberry jam, slow cooked eggs, waffles. Check out The Francis House Instagram. There are pictures galore of each beautiful breakfast. I didn't even bring a phone to breakfast each morning...I just wanted to savor every single bite uninterrupted and present. I'll list the standouts that really made our stay so incredible. BREAKFAST. I really hope Dina one day will do cooking classes. :) Sitting and chatting with both Rich and Dina. They truly love what they do. It shows in every single detail, and they're just so darn cool to talk to. The town of Calistoga. It's so sweet. There is something so special about waking up and looking outside to see the hills full of mist and fog. Thank you, Rich & Dina. Have a wonderful trip and we will see you soon! Gregg & Denise
