A crappy day calls for delicious sweets, right? That's what I told myself as I made my way to The French Gourmet, a French bakery and restaurant near the beach in San Diego.
I didn't have the muster to dine in (crappy day, remember?), so I just got a few things to go. Those things included a Caprese sandwich, a mini bottle of Chardonnay, and a slice of lemon buttercream cake.
The Caprese sandwich was very tasty, and was made with ciabatta, arugula, fresh mozzarella and slices of tomato. I had forgotten how tough ciabatta can be to chew, so I had to dissect my sandwich and eat it layer by layer: forkfuls of arugula, followed by pinches of tomato and cheese, and bites of bread. All together, it was very tasty, but I think it would have tasted better eaten as a whole entity, as opposed to the way I ate it.
My lemon buttercream cake was delicious and came with a candied lemon gummy on top. I love lemon desserts, but the thing with lemon desserts is that a little bit goes a long way. I remembered that as I was eating my amazingly tender and perfectly sweetened lemon cake. I wish I could have shared my slice with someone, and they could have shared their slice of a different flavored cake with me, and we could have been sublimely happy.
There are lots of different kinds of cake slices here, as well as croissants (including almond croissants and chocolate croissants, and something called twice-baked croissants), tarts, quiche, cheesecake, macarons, cookies, breads and lots more. The to-go counter was full and bursting with beautiful baked goods when I visited on a weekend late afternoon.
