I met with some friends for dinner last night. It was a trip down memory lane close to where we had gone to university together several decades ago
It’s a sign of the Gate’s longevity that we used to come here in our university days. Since then, the chain has had quite a journey - expanding into a multi-restaurant outfit at one point before now pulling back to its one original place
Easy to miss if you walk past casually, it shares its entrance from the street with a local church. Walking up the stairs to the first floor restaurant, it’s not changed much with its bright casual dining area
Best of its, its inventive vegetarian food is still super delicious. Their motto is, we don’t make delicious vegetarian food, we make good food. And I think that’s the secret of their success. They don’t take meat dishes and try to substitute something for the meat. They just make a completely original vegetarian dish. I’m one of the world’s definite carnivores but the fact I’ve come to the Gate recurrently over the years speaks for itself
