The Best Restaurants in Boulder

"It’s literally a hole in the wall, but this pan-Asian take-out operation on the Hill goes big as the sibling to Natascha Hess’ Bib Gourmand-winning namesake in Denver. Bánh mì-inspired rice bowls and bento boxes alike come with a choice of such stuff as barbecued pork, Japanese-style fried chicken, or Sichuan spicy eggplant; Filipino egg rolls and Korean cornflake dogs star among the snacks and sides; and sweet teeth best not sleep on the Hong Kong-style cornflake-crusted French toast." - Ruth Tobias

Five Places Worth Trying This Weekend | Eater Denver

"Natascha Hess lived and studied in Asia, which is the inspiration behind the street food she makes at The Ginger Pig. It doesn’t hurt that Top Chef contestant Carrie Baird was Hess’s cooking mentor, encouraging her to create mouthwatering dishes like the Bangkok Balls, Sesame Ginger Tofu Banh Mi Bowl, and Chinese BBQ Char Siu. The truck is parked at Boulder’s Rayback Collective all day this Sunday." - Rebecca Treon

Walked by and decided to try it out because of these 2 signs. Kimchi hot dog was maybe a little better than a hot dog at a stadium concession stand? Hot dog bun was out of a bag and it tore apart after 1 bite from the kimchi and condiments. I ended up just eating everything unconstructed. Cucumber salad was basic and underwhelming. Although, it was the tastiest item I ordered. Veggie egg rolls, about the same quality as a panda express. I guess I expected more for the hype.

I’ve been wanting to try this place since I first heard about their food truck years ago, but I never got the chance! I was back in Boulder for the day so I got lunch here after finding out about the new location. The bento box was delicious and I think a solid deal for the price. The gochujang chicken was a great spice level where it gave ya a lil kick in the pants, but wasn’t overpowering other flavors. Drink was so good too. The staff is very friendly as well.

Google
Pleasantly surprised by this one—great taste, generous portions, and solid value for $12. Just taking off one star because the lumpia didn’t have the Filipino flavor (though I appreciated the effort!) but the karaage was crispy, juicy, and perfectly seasoned. I’d go back anytime to try the other offerings!

Ginger Pig is definitely a must if you’re in the Boulder Denver area Not only is the food phenomenal. The staff is just great between Tasha Alexander Ward Grahm Luis and the rest of the staff are just all around great people very accommodating, generous, and most importantly very Sincere I’ve grown to know the staff and altogether they are the realist crew on The Hilll , genuine ,personable, and always glad to see you..

I laughed a little bit after opening my container of food because for $14 not including tip I got only a couple lumps of tofu… Absolutely 100% a waste of my money. No rice, no side, just a couple lumps. It was more than two dollars a lump. I assumed when I first ordered that with $14 I would at least have some leftovers but boy was I wrong.

Wish I didn't have to leave a review to get a response but here we are. I placed an order for delivery, it never arrived. Called Boulder location, phone not picked up vm full. Called Denver location, phone not picked up, vm full. Emailed, bounce back and undeliverable. Messsaged on facebook, left on read. Sent the same order again, delivered but order wrong. Hope they had an off night and will respond to this so we can resolve and remove. Love their food, I hope they can show their customer service exists in some capacity.

Google
My partner and I were very excited to try this place after all the hype, but were pretty disappointed with what we received. The dumplings were OK but nothing spectacular, honestly you could get the same results if not better from heating up frozen store bought dumplings. The meat of the chicken was dry while the breading was wet and seemed to lack flavor. I thought the fries were okay, but my partner insisted there was a bad aftertaste and a very "reheated" quality to them. With that said, my Kra Pao Burger (thai basil beef) was flavorful and I would consider ordering this again if I just wanted a quick bite. It was only after our experience that we read that this place has lost its reputation for quality since changing its menu and other shifts in design. I hope they find their way back.

Google
The Ginger Pig used to be one of my go-to spots on the hill with their authentic dishes, great flavors, and a sense that everything was made fresh with care. Unfortunately, that’s no longer the case. Ever since the new menu rollout, the quality has really taken a hit. The food now tastes like it’s been pre-cooked, frozen, and reheated rather than made to order. The seasoning is either way over seasoned and inedible or it’s just bland, and the although the prices are lower it doesn’t justify the decline in quality. It feels like they expanded their menu and overhead beyond what they can support, which has sacrificed quality in the process. I really wanted to love it again, but this 2nd experience with their new menu was a huge letdown. The Ginger Pig went from being a standout favorite on the hill, to just another overhyped spot cutting corners.

Yelp
I ordered takeout on the corner space at the Ginger Pig on a busy Saturday night during parents weekend at CU. I had the crispy char sui pork bowl. I loved it, but the Maggi on the rice was not my favorite as it is overpowering. The pork was plentiful and crispy. I look forward to trying more dishes.

Yelp
We had heard that Ginger Pig had expanded from its days as a starter kitchen at Rosetta Hall when it opened in 2019. We had tried it here and liked the time we ate, but our favorite kitchen at Rosetta eventually left and we have not returned to Boulder's first food hall. We have a newer one we greatly enjoy. But I was intrigued when I heard that Ginger Pig had a restaurant in Denver and had opened a takeout window kitchen on the Hill, a location very near us, even walkable. So today, sunny and warm for the season, we ordered online and walked down for our food. There is no inside option, all, order and pickup, done on the sidewalk through a window of a former handcrafted jewelry shop that had closed a long time ago. There is also no real outside seating for Ginger Pig, though there is a picnic table near the sidewalk, but at lunch time, was full of CU students. We were not sure whose food they were eating but supposedly this table belongs to Ginger Pig, I learned later. we took out food home to eat. The Char Siu Pork Rice Bowl was as good as I remembered from that first time at Rosetta Hall. Crispy, sweet, spicy, juicy and tender, an ample portion for the two of us. It was supposed to come with a side of rice and a Chinese Smashed Cucumber Salad. The rice was well cooked but it took us hours to remember that the reason the meal seemed so off balance was that they had forgotten the cucumber salad though we had not noticed when we took the bag, as it was closed. We also ordered some vegetable egg rolls, and they were crispy with tender veggies. Those came with a chili sweet sauce and a mustard. I did call Ginger Pig later in the day and told them about the missing salad and they apologized and said they would remind the packers to check orders more carefully. I appreciate that but next time I will also check myself. It is too far to walk all the way back for a small item. Anyone who knows the Hill in Boulder, knows that there is hardly any parking and the best access is by foot, bike, or bus. Next time we will try some more items. The menu here is much smaller than the one in Denver but I hope they will grow here and acquire more seating for summer. I don't believe the existing space has any option for indoor seating. Have a plan for where to eat your food when you come for a meal! If they turn out to be super successful this summer, maybe they can rent a bigger space with indoor seating for next winter.

Yelp
Had difficulty ordering on line, so I called and spoke with an unhelpful, disrespectful and rude individual who refused to give his name and hung up on me. Food was okay, but order was incomplete. There is no ambiance. Save your money and spend it wisely.

Yelp
I'm obsessed with Ginger Pig in Denver so I was thrilled to see another location in Boulder! The food is just as great but I took off a star because this location is counter service with outdoor seating/to-go orders only. One of the best parts of the Denver location is the incredible staff and great vibes, including events, but this location is really just for the food. They offer a totally different menu, designed for to-go, so I would still encourage a visit just know what to expect!

Yelp
Such a great little place to grab food really quick! I got the char siu pork and it was delicious with a really good portion. Really nice to see a place like this open on the hill, I only wish it was open later!

Yelp
This is my new go to spot on the hill! The food is super yummy and hearty- I would definitely order ahead if you can because we just ended up walking around the hill while waiting for our food to be ready. Can't wait to go back!

Yelp
The Ginger Pig eggplant had a subtle smoky undertone - very tasty! Their cucumber salad was unusual with a surprising tang to it - Definitely worth a take-out - there is no dining in at the Boulder location. Much better than the usual fare.

Yelp
The food is outstanding. Great gluten free options. We are frequently repeat customers.

Yelp
This place sucks. the Banh Mi cause I was in a rush and this was close. Came out to $18. That's crazy. I will never understand why the asian food is so expensive in Boulder. Bánh mì was bad too. Why is there nasty wet american ham? Asked for my name and didn't bother calling it when my food was done so I just waited for 10 minutes.

Meera B.

Yelp
Overall decent but nothing special. Got the char siu with noodles and the gochujang friend chicken with rice. Wanted banh mi but they were out. Char siu was actually quite good but the noodles were cold which we didn't realize. Chicken was not good at all; it was soggy and was definitely cooked from frozen. Tasted like Trader Joe's frozen orange chicken but less good :/ Would potentially come back to try to char siu banh mi but doubt it's worth the $17. Portions for the rice and noodles were huge which was a plus. Also didn't realize there is no seating.

Caitlin M.

Yelp
This place is quickly becoming our favorite weeknight takeout spot! Note- there is only outdoor picnic tables for seating and it's counter serve so plan ahead if it's cold out. But the food is fun and delicious, great quality and the portion size is generous, which makes the price worth it! The char siu is otherworldly- I recommend it in one of the bahn mi preps, as the pickled vegetables help cut how rich it is. My husband has also tried the Korean fried chicken and really enjoyed it. It's definitely more on the fusion side. But we're super happy to have a new, actually good, restaurant on the hill!

Yelp
Super yummy!!!!! Most of what I ordered was a little too spicy for me, thankfully I added their lemon aioli sorta sauce, it was delicious. My husband thought it was perfect. Spice aside, the flavors are amazing. Super fresh food.
