The Good Egg at Eat 17 - Review - Walthamstow - London - The Infatuation

"The Good Egg is a reliable Middle Eastern brunch spot with a few locations, and this Walthamstow one is tucked inside Eat 17. It's part food shop and part aspirational Walthamstow Village hangout, stocked with produce that makes Waitrose look pedestrian—mushrooms that could double as sculptural artworks, ‘vegan facon jam’, and, in summer, an Ice Cream Union hatch. The Good Egg is hidden down one side of the bakery, with two pleasant outdoor areas and a diner-like space inside, populated by young families. Dodge scooters trussed up with dinosaur balloons and parents expertly diverting a last-piece-of-pita tantrum, and nab a comfy booth. Our go-to order is the comforting za’atar fried chicken—crispy buttermilk chicken coated in za’atar and stuffed into a pita with pickles—but the chicken tahini caesar is a solid choice, too. photo credit: Sinéad Cranna photo credit: Karolina Wiercigroch Food Rundown Chicken Tahini Caesar A huge, overflowing bowl of salad with shards of pita so big and crispy they look like the remnants of a broken window. This is a decent salad, but do get the fudgy egg and the salty bacon to make it a bit more interesting. PlayMute video credit: the salad at The Good Egg ZFC The pita pocket can barely contain the amount of crunchy, juicy chicken that this sandwich comes with. The amba mayo is especially nice, and the pickled slaw does a nice job of balancing all that delicious fat—we’d like more of both, though. photo credit: Sinéad Cranna" - Sinéad Cranna

The Good Egg Walthamstow - Review - Walthamstow - London - The Infatuation

"The Good Egg is a Middle Eastern-inspired brunch spot with easygoing restaurants in Margate and Stoke Newington. This Walthamstow location is tucked inside Eat 17. So you can pop to the deli and butcher after your slice of babka and za’atar fried chicken pita. We haven’t been here yet, but want you to know this spot exists." - Sinéad Cranna

Side-eye for being loud isn't a thing at family-friendly Eat 17 - Review - London - The Infatuation

"Eat 17 is a food shop, cafe, and aspirational Walthamstow Village hangout. Its shelves are stocked with the sort of hyper-seasonal and local produce that makes Waitrose look pedestrian—mushrooms that could double as sculptural artworks, ‘vegan facon jam’, multiple brands of chilli oil, and, in the summer, an Ice Cream Union hatch. The walk-in-only cafe, tucked to the side of the bakery counter, is a diner-like space populated by young families. Dodge scooters trussed up with dinosaur balloons, pushchairs, and discarded toast crusts in order to get a comfy booth. The brunch dishes are decent—nicely seasoned avocado on toast, a good full English—and at lunch, the pizzas get the job done. It’s best for families who want an easy setting to dump their bags for an hour or so, and not be judged if a last-slice-of-pizza tantrum occurs. Food Rundown Eat 17 Breakfast This is a pleasant full English breakfast. The best bit is the sausage—meaty, a bit peppery, and cooked perfectly so that every side is nicely crisp. The bland black pudding is a miss, though. photo credit: Sinéad Cranna Avo Toast There’s a welcome citrussy blast of lemon, lots of chilli oil, the poached eggs are runny, and the avocado is creamy but still has some structure to it. It’s a very good avocado on toast. photo credit: Sinéad Cranna" - Sinéad Cranna

What a hidden gem! Famous for their deli, bagels and pizza but you MUST try their dinner deal in the small restaurant inside. £25 a head for an amazing Middle Eastern mezze starter spread, and a main each. Honestly such a bargain for the price and the quality of the food is incredible. We were served by the lovely Gerardo and couldn’t fault our experience. A new regular for us!

I stopped at The Good Egg in Walthamstow Village for brunch and had the sabih / sabich pita with smoky aubergine and egg, a brilliant choice. The coffee was smooth, and the garden patio is a lovely spot to relax. Interiors don’t quite suit the cuisine, but the Middle Eastern flavours make it worth visiting.

Used to love it here but after changing management and menu the best truffle pizza is gone 🥲 it was the best one, now there is nothing classic in the menu we could choose. We hope truffle pizza will be back one day. They also used to turn on outside heaters so it was still bearable to have a coffee outside in colder season. Unfortunately, not anymore so we switched to Gail’s although E17 has better coffee and banana bread but at the moment it’s too cold to have it outside. Great staff though.

We were disappointed with our experience here. Our server was rather cold/unfriendly overall and didn’t give us a check back. We were seated at a tiny 2 seater table despite there being 3 of us, right next to what was essentially the public toilet, as it was in constant use by non-patrons. Literally every minute the door was opened and a strong smell of urine wafted over us, which made for a very unpleasant dining environment. The food had potential to be delicious but just wasn’t executed well. I ordered the falafel pitta and the filling was so unevenly distributed that it was literally half filled with cherry tomatoes, so I left a lot of my portion. I ordered some fried aubergine as an add on and was charged £3 for two slices which felt ridiculous. We ordered 2 portions of ‘fries’ but only one arrived. In hindsight we were pleased as they weren’t fries at all, but cubed potatoes. On the plus side the kids plate was lovely with a nice little selection of child friendly options (although I do think it was overpriced considering what it consisted of). The pizzas I saw at a neighbouring table looked lovely and there were really great soft drinks options.

Really lovely little spot within a great grocery store. The food selection is perfect for lunch and it was one of those menus where I couldn’t decide because it all looked so good! We had the pittas and also a lovely light IPA. The fries were a bit of a curve ball as they’re not actually fries they’re lightly spice crispy potato’s with a curry mayo. They were really good! The main highlight for us was that the kids offering; a nice selection of pitta, hummus, apple and blueberries and they also had a little mini fruit platter of watermelon, kiwi and orange slices. This was really nice to see as a lot of kids offerings are just chicken and chips, so was good to have something different.

Very disappointed by The Good Egg. A completely different experience to the former excellent Eat 17 restaurant that occupied this site, about which most of the reviews on here are written. I waited at the "wait here to be seated" sign for a couple of minutes and nobody came so I fetched someone from the shop counter to seat me and give me a menu. I later had to fetch my own water from the server's station as there was still no-one about to serve and this remained the case throughout my meal. The coffee was mediocre, the fish hash was very pretty to look at but the multiple strong flavours didn't work together and overwhelmed the smoked haddock. The biggest kicker was the bill. There were still no staff present in the restaurant area when I finished so I had to go back into the shop and fetch someone from behind the counter again. He presented me not with a bill but with a card machine with a total on it. It was higher than I expected so I asked to see an itemised bill. This was eventually achieved after much faffing with the card machine and it showed a 13.5% service charge had been added! I'd have found this hidden (yet optional) figure cheeky even if there had been decent service but it felt particularly irksome given I've had better service in McDonalds!

Delish food!! Excellent service by Chloe. . Sabih sandwich was divine. Speed date smoothie was wonderful! Would recommend 100% and I love that it’s inside a welcoming neighborhood market!

Excellent quality and taste. We ordered the sweet potato curry and the halloumi salad - and we were not disappointed! The restaurant's location is also great, the staff was very helpful - overall a great experience. The only reason for the rating of 4 and not of a 5, is because of its limited choices for vegans and vegetarians - other than these 2 options there is nothing. Having said that, these 2 dished are definitely recommended and definitely worth the visit.
