Yelp
Nice hotel. Here for work and since I'm not paying for it, my view of what it is might not be as critical as if it were my own money. But I will still let Yelpers know what to expect.
First off, let me say that when I book a hotel I go for the following (in this order): 1. Location, 2. Price, 3. Loyalty rewards, 4. In-house amenities (bars, spa, fitness center, etc). When reviewing a hotel, I look at all of the aforementioned, plus (most importantly) service.
So, here are my ratings / reasons:
1. Service (5 stars). The people here - front desk, concierge, waitstaff, etc. - are incredible. Even while they are busy they take time to say hello or thank you for being here. While I don't need people kissing my butt, a friendly face and a warm welcome is always nice.
2. Location (3.5 stars). This really is relative to what you want for a view and what you plan on doing. If you want a quick walk to a casino and night life, this might be a 5 star choice. Personally, I find that the Hilton Auckland has the best location for local hotels. I stayed there last year and was blown away by where it was (and paid a hefty price for it). At the Grand you are not close to the water, but if you get a hotel room on one of the upper floors you will see a view of the water in the distance. To get to the high-end shops and the harbor front you will be walking 1-2 miles (depends where you want to go). The Grand's location isn't bad, but it wouldn't be my first choice while in Auckland.
3. Price (not rating - staying for work). But, if I were to appropriately price this hotel (what I'd be willing to spend for what you get), I would be ok with $150 (USD) a night for off season / $175 during peak season. While this hotel is good, as you will read in my comments - it doesn't warrant a price tag much higher than that.
4. Loyalty Rewards (1 star; won't include in overall rating). While this does not matter much to most people, for frequent travelers this can make or break a hotel stay. I have become brand loyal just for this reason. This hotel doesn't subscribe to any point / loyalty system (per the front desk when I checked in). Again, since this was a work trip and I stayed where they booked (and paid), I had little choice in this regard. But, on the flip-side, I (my office) was able to support a local run hotel and experience a hotel I might not have.
5. In house amenities (4 stars). I'm currently writing this review while on one of the gym machines, so this place does have a gym. Being a frequent traveler - this is a huge plus for me. While this gym isn't big and has limited equipment (2 treadmills, 3 elliptical hybrids, 2 bikes, 1 rower, and some cable machines/dumbbells) it is clean and is open 24hrs. But, I am spoiled - I just spent 12 days at the Grand Hyatt Melbourne and the gym was bigger than most stand alone gyms. So, my opinion might be biased at this moment. The hotel has a nice indoor lap pool and sauna. I didn't use it, but it is attached to the gym and it really looks nice. The hotel also has a bar (good), in-house breakfast (good, but a bit pricey), a sushi restaurant attached (didn't try), and a steakhouse (expensive but wonderful). Essentially you don't have to leave your hotel if you don't want to (although I can't imagine why one wouldn't...this IS New Zealand). I would like to see a sundries store and (again, spoiled from last stay) a hair salon (I know, not needed - but awesome if you want a blow out before a meeting and are pressed for time).
Overall, I wouldn't discourage anyone from this hotel, but I would tell anyone wanting a gorgeous view of the water to head over to the Hilton.
