"At Rang Mahal, chef Milind Sovani presents traditional Indian flavours in a new light with his five-course dinner menu priced at $118++. Sovani’s creations are colourful and creative, but still uphold the integrity of the quality produce he uses and traditional North Indian flavours. For example, the Masala Rice Sushi looks like a Japanese maki but is made with Ambemohar, a sticky rice from Maharashtra in western India prized for its mango blossom scent, cooked with Madras curry powder and rolled with crispy vegetables. Masala Rice Sushi (Pic: Rang Mahal) For another dish, premium Irish duck breast is rubbed with a mix of fragrant spices including cinnamon, cloves, cardamoms and sankeshwari chilli, and roasted in the tandoor till the skin is crisp and golden-brown. Served with a creamy Trichur curry and broccoli garlic pesto, the Spiced Roast Duck (pictured in banner) is a shining example of contemporary Indian cuisine." - Rachel Tan

The hotel’s vibrant decor and retro charm made for a unique and enjoyable experience. The staff were incredibly friendly and attentive. The location is also excellent, with plenty of dining options and attractions nearby. I highly recommend this hotel for anyone visiting the area!

Kitty and I decided to treat ourselves to a staycation at The Great Madras by Hotel Calmo, booking a one-night stay through Agoda. We were initially drawn to the advertisement for a hotel room with a king-size bed, priced at $137. However, upon arrival, we discovered that our booking was actually for a hostel, not a hotel room. While the Agoda listing stated "hotel room," the service staff explained that we should have read the room details more carefully. While the initial disappointment was real, I'm choosing to rate our stay based on the hostel experience itself, comparing it to other hostels I've encountered. The hostel itself was located on the first floor and was incredibly small. Our room had a sliding door and very limited space to move around. The TV was defective, and we had to share common toilets located outside the hostel rooms. There was no electronic key for the sliding door, only a physical key. To make matters worse, the bathroom lacked basic amenities like body shampoo and lotion. The air conditioning was also problematic. The temperature couldn't be adjusted, and the fan speed seemed to be fixed. The thin walls meant that conversations from the corridor and other rooms were easily audible, making it difficult to relax. The hotel also required a $100 deposit upon check-in, which was refundable upon check-out. While the service staff, Edward, was friendly and helpful, explaining the hotel bookings and providing advice on the best time to book, these shortcomings led us to give The Great Madras by Hotel Calmo a 3-star rating. Important Note for Potential Guests: If you're booking The Great Madras by Hotel Calmo through Agoda, be sure to read the room details carefully before making a reservation. The price can vary significantly depending on the season, with low peak season prices as low as $60-$70. I hope this review is helpful for others considering this hotel.

Donkey and I indulged in a staycation at The Great Madras by Hotel Calmo, reserving a one-night stay through Agoda. Initially enticed by the advertisement for a hotel room with a king-size bed priced at $137, we were disappointed to discover upon arrival that our booking was for a hostel, not a hotel room. Despite the misleading information on Agoda, the service staff informed us that we should have been more attentive to the room details. While the initial letdown was palpable, I have chosen to assess our stay based on the hostel experience itself, drawing comparisons to other hostels I have visited. The hostel, located on the first floor, was notably compact. Our room, with a sliding door and limited space for movement, had a faulty TV and musty bedsheets. Instead of an electronic key, a physical key was provided for the sliding door. The shared toilets outside the hostel rooms were audible from inside our room, making it challenging to relax. Furthermore, the bathroom lacked basic amenities like body wash and lotion. The air conditioning presented challenges as well, with an unadjustable temperature and fixed fan speed. The thin walls allowed conversations from the corridor and neighboring rooms to be easily heard, disrupting our peace. Upon check-in, a $100 deposit was required by the hotel, refundable upon check-out. Despite the friendly and helpful service from Edward, who clarified the hotel bookings and provided advice on optimal booking times, these issues led us to give The Great Madras by Hotel Calmo a 3-star rating. A crucial reminder for prospective guests: When booking The Great Madras by Hotel Calmo through Agoda, carefully review the room details before confirming your reservation. Prices may vary significantly depending on the season, with low peak season rates as low as $60-$70. I believe this review will offer valuable insights to those considering a stay at this establishment.

Absolutely Disgusting – Avoid at All Costs!!! I don’t normally post reviews but this time I have to. This hotel is DIRTY!!! They didn’t even change the bed linen after the previous guests. Just look at the pictures – it’s disgusting! There were bins right in front of the lobby. Unfortunately, we were stuck there for one night as we arrived late, and they refused to give me a refund for the upcoming nights. Don’t trust any positive reviews – they offer 30 SGD to people for writing them.

Absolutely filthy, so rundown and loud - my window didn't close and you could hear every noise from the street. It is basically like staying in a hostel which would be ok if the prices weren't so expensive. Do yourself a favour and spend the same amount of money to stay somewhere nicer or stay in a place that is 1/3 of the price but the same level of cleanliness and unwelcome environment. I have to assume that most if not all of the good reviews are from people trying to claim the free $30 they say they will give you in posters in the lobby, elevator and every room if you leave a good review.

You get what you pay for!!!! Our room has had a problem since we checked in the light in the room always cutting off and turning back on again and again all the time (have a video but can not post it)after we informed the staff all they could say was “sorry” and didn't do anything about it. The room we got is not clean it has dust all over and behind the TV. After all it great location but if you have more budget should upgrade to a better place .

We stayed in the great Madras hotel in Little India from May 24th thru May 28th. We paid S$ 150 per night in advance thru our credit card and we expected reasonable value for our money in service and amenities in the hotel. We are in hospitality Industry running franchised hotel since 1994.In my personal opinion, I will never stay in this hotel again or recommend this property to anyone. For not to recommend this property, I have taken into consideration the following. Building: Although front appearance has done with cosmetic works, they do not have front desk staff. It could be because of their limited number of rooms. The front desk staff ( if you can find one) is very unfriendly. The room size is very minimal. Property amenities include only Free (WIFI), a Coffee maker and a flatscreen TV. The bed sheets, blanket and bath towels are very shabby. The toilet/bathroom is very small and there was no bath gel or shampoo in their dispenser. They did not provide a final invoice at check out which was promised by e-mail but never came. If someone wants value for their money then this is not the property I will recommend to my friends or relatives.

It's bit secluded though there are crowds. No soundproof at all. Literally hearing alot vehicles around, people laughing talking all sorts of noises. The window was slightly cracked. Even hearing music below I think there's a Club downstairs. Requested for a room change but to no avail. What I like about is the smart tv. Well i stay for a day so I Don't think I will stay there again. Overall the room was quite comfy except the noise outside are intolerable.
