"While this bar, which first opened its doors all the way back in 1654, tends to attract the younger residents of the city, it's hard to pass up a pint at the bar that was frequented by John Hancock and Paul Revere. Legend has it that Revere overheard British invasion plans at this bar, sparking his famous ride." - Erika Adams, Katie Chudy

My cousin recommended The Green Dragon to me, and I’m glad he did. This old-school bar in Boston has a unique charm, blending its Irish roots with a nod to the military. The atmosphere is always lively, especially at night when the place draws a great crowd. The beer selection is fantastic, with a variety of options to suit any taste. Whether you’re looking for a place to unwind or enjoy a vibrant night out, The Green Dragon is a top choice.

Stopped in for a much needed toast to liberty and freedom! We definitely need more liberty and freedom. Maybe we should have another little meeting to discuss this... What say you my fellow patriots?

Came here on Sunday for the first time while walking the Freedom Trail. I did not order any food (my mistake) as I had already eaten, but enjoyed hanging out at the bar. A sign outside states showing hospitality for the weary travelers, and that's exactly what we received. The bartender was very nice and friendly, as well as a couple of locals that made my friend and I feel like family and apart of the community. Ordered a shirt along with our drinks, non-alcoholic for me, so we can represent this great establishment. Next time I'm in Boston, I'll definitely come back and order food this time.

Google
Excellent food and they were very busy but our server was very good she took great care of us .I wish I could remember her name she was new, it was her second day and she was a jewel . I had the steak tips and my husband had the Reuben and we both enjoyed it very much . The history and atmosphere were amazing .will be back The history was what brought us in ...the food is what will bring us back

Apparently this place is one of the 10 Oldest Bars in the world! Founded in 1657. It is truly a must see while visiting Boston. Great pour of Guinness and friendly staff. Must try are the super nachos with buffalo chicken, shepherds pie and patriot’s burger.

Dylan Burkett

Google
Food is amazing and their local craft lager is delicious, has a subtle sweet flavor to it (think like a wachusset blueberry ale). Honestly I could have drank one after another. However drinks are obscenely expensive and the food portions are quite small.

Google
The history AND the food are off the charts! I had wanted to visit for the history alone, but the Dragon won me over! I try the clam chowder everywhere I go. The Dragon's is near the top of the list. It's somewhat sweet with juicy chunks of clams. Nice consistency, too. My main was the shepherd's pie. The gravy had a good meaty taste that pulled the dish together. The potatoes, meat, and vegetables were all excellently cooked. I finished with the Boston cream pie. Coated in chocolate and drizzled with chocolate sauce... awesome! I can't wait to go back!

Google
This has been one of my husband's bucketlist spots for years and we went on St. Patricks day weekend. Had giant pretzel and was tasty. Male server was a bit confused but the rest of the staff was great. Bucket list, check.

Yelp
Ever wish you could flit back in time to the early days of our nation, drink a pint of bitter alongside people you'd only read about in your history books, and lose yourself in time? Well...you can't. But the nearest thing I've found has got to be The Green Dragon Tavern, in downtown Boston. I'm a West Coast guy, and this was literally my first visit to Boston (to meet up with a business associate / friend for lunch). And despite the fact it was crazy busy due to a local street market that day, it was the perfect place. Sitting in the Green Dragon, I imagined what it must have looked and felt like back in the late 1600s, with snow falling outside the windows, a fire burning somewhere in the common room, and a hot plate of stew with bread and beer on the table in front of me. What I ACTUALLY had was a plate of fish and chips that wasn't bad at all, and a couple of local porters that went down smooth and silky. But knowing it was the launching point for Paul Revere's famous ride, and that other founders of our amazing nation had been there as well...well, that's worth the visit all on its own.

Yelp
Amazing Clam Chowder!!! The absolute best we found in Boston!! Came in for dinner with our in-laws. Traditional Irish Pub type spot. Lots of cool american history regarding this bar -- but I was a little disappointed the server didn't elaborate or talk about it at all! When I tried asking her about it a bit, she seemed almost annoyed so I dropped it. So instead we googled it's history while waiting for our food. It was my first time visiting Boston, so I was trying the clam chowder everywhere we went and I absolutely loved theirs! It was creamy and more on the chunky side (I'm not a thin chowder kind of girl). Definitely will return one day just for that...but also the fish and chips were great too. Service was slow and a bit lacking..restaurant was about half full but perhaps they were short on staff... Took a long while for drink refills and food to come out. Server was not conversational/friendly at all...otherwise, we really enjoyed the food!

Yelp
Great find off the main streets of Boston. Near other popular places like Bell in Hand and Hennesy's. Close proximity to TD Garden and Phaniel Hall / Long Wharf. We tried the Irish Curry Cheese Fries which were excellent! The Irish Curry was semi sweet yet carried a small kick of heat that had you diving back in for more. The Green Dragon Brew, a light lager, was crisp and enjoyable. We then split the Blackberry Bacon Grilled Cheese: the cheese wasn't as melted as we would have liked, and the blackberry flavor was missing. However, the crispy bacon and jalapeños were more up my alley. With the windows open, we took the opportunity to sit "streetside," but the constant traffic of walking tours made it a bit uneasy to enjoy one's meal. Would come back again to try more of their fare.

Meagan P.

Yelp
The house porter is a must try for porter lovers. I try Shepherds pie everywhere I go and this one is by far one of the best. Very cool historic feel and Chris the bartender was incredibly welcoming. Definitely a must when venturing down Bostons oldest street.

Shanelle S.

Yelp
Historic pub with bar classics. Came here for an early dinner and we were able to get a table for four without waiting, though the place was buzzing. History took place here, as it was the meeting place of many revolutionary figures. The atmosphere is dimly lit but convivial. I had the Cobb salad without blue cheese for my entree, which was a solid mixture of veggies and bacon. The clam chowder was very thick and creamy; a New England classic for a reason. My friends got the fish and chips and seafood platter respectively. The serving sizes were generous and hearty. Credit cards accepted. Extremely limited parking available so I'd recommend taking public transport instead.

Yelp
Came in here on a wet day looking for a cool old pub and found what we were looking for. Neat space, nice and warm on the inside and plenty of seating. The patches from the peace officers and firefighters from around the county was really cool to see and recognize a few. Our daughter really enjoyed the large space for dancing. Grabbed a couple of pints, a lobster roll and some fried pickles to split between us. My wife also got a hot toddy which looked and smelled great. Lobster roll was okay, good size, and tasted fresh. The fried pickles were great, hard to go wrong with on a cold wet day. Staff was friendly and patient with our 3 year old and us. Cool spot to check out with decent food and a good drink selection.

Travis S.

Yelp
This is a really cool bar next to the oldest tavern and restaurant in the US. This place is actually way more fun than bell in hand. Lots of locals call this their watering hole. Great place to stop and drink before going to the Garden to watch a game.

Dawn C.

Yelp
Take a step into history! This small bar and restaurant is a must-stop on your Boston tour. According to their website, the bar was established in 1654; The Green Dragon was a favorite haunt of Paul Revere and John Hancock. Daniel Webster, the famous historian, ratified that it was indeed in the Green Dragon that the plans for the invasion of Lexington and Concord were overheard, thus starting the famous ride of Paul Revere. The food is basic pub fare. It does have fun, revolutionary war-named dishes. They do have gluten-free buns and can make things dairy-free. Since Massachusetts has a good allergy law, it is easy to navigate allergy-friendly options. I had the delicious Ruben. The fries are basic but crispy. They have a hard cider on tap, too. It's a fun spot for a quick lunch while you're downtown.

Loretta C.

Yelp
Ambiance is a cute Boston historical hangout with a full bar and a few tables right near two open air windows. Decent menu.

Ted G.

Yelp
Another significant piece of Boston's history! The Green Dragon Tavern was a public house used as a tavern and meeting place, the basement tavern was used by several secret groups and became known by historians as the "Headquarters of the Revolution". The Sons of Liberty, Boston Committee of Correspondence and the Boston Caucus each met there. The Boston Tea Party was said to have been planned there. The staff are great, after all they have had plenty of practice, and great drinks. Cheers!

Mike W.

Yelp
So cool sitting in a building that is this old. Beer was great. Had the biggest pretzel I have ever seen.

Cindy Z.

Yelp
After having some drinks at Union Oyster House only to realize they close at 9pm, we stumbled over to The Green Dragon Tavern since they open until 2am. We kept the night going with drinks here. It's a classic pub, which was pretty quiet on a Sunday night. Nice, chill spot to hang out. I didn't realize what a historic spot this is until afterwards, so bonus points for that.

Whitney M.

Yelp
We just stopped in for drinks & atmosphere. The drinks were great! The service was friendly & the restaurant has a fun, historic vibe.

Carly B.

Yelp
My bestie and I had popped in after a disappointing experience at another establishment and were delighted to order two espresso martinis from Tina, who was a breath of fresh air in Boston :) we love you Tina

Linda R.

Yelp
Yes, touristy place but they do serve a very good Guinness. Classic Irish pub atmosphere with dark well worn furniture, very comfortable place to have a pint. Service was very good and very attentive. Our server was from Ireland so it was fun to chat about Irish places in Boston and Ireland. Tavern has great history for US and Boston. You will pay dearly for your pint but worth it.

Keri W.

Yelp
Not sure why the reviews aren't good. The bar was great. The bartender was super friendly and the drinks were yummy. It is a very old establishment just like the bar across the road Bell in Hand. This bar has kept the look of its past which we really liked. My husband had beers and I had ciders. He also prefers a Blanton's and the price was so reasonable! It was twice as much at another place. I also ordered the fried pickles and mozzarella sticks- good bar food. I was not disappointed with either. I would recommend stopping in and grabbing a drink and a bite.

Kevin B.

Yelp
This is still one of our favorite places to visit when in town. It's a great pub and is a solid choice for dinner even if you have a big group (we had 6 with us). Our service was good on our most recent visit and we really enjoyed our drinks (I had a nice local brew). My wife really enjoyed her clam chowder and I loved my fish and chips. It's a great place overall and one that I will continue to frequent every time I visit Boston!

Laken M.

Yelp
We visited the Green Dragon Tavern expecting a piece of history and some good service, but we were extremely disappointed. As out-of-towners, we were met with rude and dismissive bartenders who seemed to go out of their way to make us feel unwelcome. At one point, they even turned a group away, saying, "if you see nowhere to sit, then go." When we chose not to tip due to the poor service, the bartender/ast manager bluntly told us not to ask for anything else. The actual manager was not there. We explained that the lack of tip was because of the attitude we were receiving, which only got us more of the same. For a historic spot, you'd expect better hospitality - it's no wonder the place was almost empty. Avoid if you're looking for a friendly, welcoming experience.

Melissa V.

Yelp
If I could give zero stars i would. Found this place when we were looking at the History of the bars in the area. This place came up. Excited to check it out we stopped by. From the minute we walked in everyone we encountered was so rude. The bartender was the worst. How can you expect someone to spend money if you're that rude. This could have been a nice experience but we took our business to surrounding bars. Wouldn't recommend, wouldn't suggest anyone to waste their time. Don't bother the place is terrible.

Michael D.

Yelp
Green Gragon is still amazing. Great food and drink. It's fun and the history of this place is cool. The staff are very nice with good service. Fish sandwich, Reuben and Shepherds Pie were delicious.

Lori C.

Yelp
Party of 4 tried to have drinks on NYE. We sat down and 2 in our party went up to the bar to order drinks. A waitress walked up to our table to take our order, and we told her our friends went up to the bar to order and I asked if it was okay. She stormed off without saying a word. Then our friends came back to the table and said we can't order from the bar. Ummm okay, fine by us but it would have been nice if the cranky waitress told us that. Sorry she had a hair across her ass. We left.

Colby B.

Yelp
My visit to The Green Dragon Tavern was nothing short of amazing! The cozy atmosphere paired perfectly with delicious food and drinks. I loved the classic pub fare, but what really made the experience special was knowing I was having a pint in a place with such deep historical roots. The Green Dragon is known as the 'Headquarters of the Revolution' where patriots gathered, and you can really feel the sense of history here. If you're a history buff or just want great food and a drink in a legendary spot, this tavern is a must-visit in Boston!

B B.

Yelp
The guru is here in Boston sampling some of their more historic taverns and I had to stop by this one. Unlike the other touristy establishments in the area this one keeps it very simple. This is simply a bar that servers food. And the food they do serve is very basic no frills items. They got burgers and sandwiches and a few Irish items like shepherds pie. I opted for their fish and chips and they were very nice. Their fish sandwich was nice too. So if you're in the area and need a quiet place to rest and refresh from a long day of touring historic sites this is a nice little spot to be.

Erin H.

Yelp
Wandering around, trying to figure out where to go and what to do next, I stopped in at the Green Dragon. The bartender provided some great stories about the original Green Dragon Tavern - it was Paul Revere's favorite pub, John Hancock stopped by a lot, as did many other revolutionaries. Unfortunately the original was torn down, but this location was built in the 1990s, so at least there's AC. Lots of dark wood inside, but plenty of seating both at tables and the bar. At the bartender's recommendation, I tried the Green Tavern Ale - the first brown ale that I really, really enjoy. Refreshingly good, you should give it a try. Unfortunately I ended up not having time to sample anything from their menu, though many classic pub dishes passed me on the way to their tables and looked really good.

Patti O.

Yelp
Cool place with lots of history. We ordered the pretzel appetizer and it was good. Attentive bartenders.

Kelsey P.

Yelp
One of the oldest bars in the area, where John Hancock and Paul Revere were known to frequent. This was really cool to see! The inside is small, and somehow we got 3 seats at the bar within 5-10 minutes of arriving. We only had drinks, but they were good. My husband had the Green Dragon Ale and enjoyed it. I got a whiskey sour with Bulleit and it was nice and strong. The bartender was so friendly, and he was a busy guy! I definitely recommend coming here, even if it's for a drink, or to pop in to see such a historical tavern.

Kayla J.

Yelp
Loved this place. As a Boston resident I had such a fun time playing into the historical gimmick. The bar was decked out in historical trinkets, there's a random musket hanging on the wall -- it's fantastic. I of course got the Boston Tea Party because it's SERVED IN A TEAPOT. I was so tickled. It's a light and refreshing without being too boozy. You get like 5 glasses out of it for $25. And the joy of pouring myself a drink from a teapot in a bar was priceless. I tried to finish it by myself but ended up leaving a glass so it's definitely enough to serve two as advertised. The fish sandwich was delicious with super fresh tomatoes. My partner said it wasn't filling enough for him -- he ended up also getting the clam chowder. The chowder was pretty standard for Boston (I actually liked it better than The Oyster House down the road as it's less gritty in my opinion). The BlackBerry Bacon grilled cheese was served on a bun which I found surprising. It was still really good and had a kick from the jalapeños. The fries were nice and thick. They weren't soggy at all and went nicely with the meal. Service was quick and it was a super casual place. You seat yourself which is fun as it played into the vibes that it's for "the weary traveler" looking for food and a place to stay in the olden times. I had fun reading the place mat and imagining all those who also came in for a pot of tea (lol) before me. They also played fantastic music (my 60 year old mother would be rocking out). And looked like they were setting up for live music later in the night. Will be bringing visitors here for sure to get the old American vibe with good food and fun drinks. (Of note to owners- having prices on the drink menu would be nice)

Brooke H.

Yelp
We stopped in around 4pm for an early dinner after sightseeing. There was a brief wait for a table to be cleaned before being seated. Our server was friendly and checked on us frequently, and our food was great. I had the fish and chips, while others in my group had a burger and wings. The location, ambience, and history of the place made it a really fun stop while we explored Boston.

Randy T.

Yelp
Came here because I love going to historical restaurants. Though once we sat down I looked up the history of it and the original one burned down in the 1800s. Nevertheless the vibe inside was great, very historical themed, with old muskets hanging on the wall. I got the bangers and mash and my wife got the clam chowder and we were both very satisfied with our meals. The house lager was meh, it tasted off and I'd probably go with something else. Solid place though

Janelle L.

Yelp
We popped in here for a rest and a snack. The vibe is so old colonial town which is what we came for. The waitress was so sweet and had the most amazing Irish accent it really made our night.

A J.

Yelp
Popped in for an Irish Coffee and to check out a tavern. Good amount of whiskey in the coffee and we left feeling a little warmer! Fun place to stop and cute Christmas decor. Enjoy

Rhea A.

Yelp
The Apple cider drink and curry fries were really good. I've never had Irish curry before, but it was excellent. They had a comedy night going on, wasn't my type of humor but it was nice to see people having fun. The only problem was that the 2 employees weren't on the same page. The one out front informed us the kitchen was closed and we couldn't order food. I was hungry and planned to leave, but the rest of the group wanted to go in. When we were sat, we were told the kitchen WAS open. I would've left if I listened to the man out front. Otherwise, our server was nice. So the service isn't bad.

Jessica S.

Yelp
I was excited to take myself and my boys to this historic spot. It was a tiny place, kind of hard to navigate when busy but it's old! No fault for that. I feel like I expected a little more decor or something. The food was good. I had come in wanting the curry fries but at this point in our trip I wasn't feeling anything fried and opted for the Irish curry over rice. It was really good! Their chowder was also very good. My son got cheese sticks as well but I wouldn't ever have much to say about cheese sticks. Haha I didn't find anything too special about here, I was expecting it to be a little different and I could have just had an off night but I'm glad we could cross it off our historical places list.

Eric O.

Yelp
First of all don't be mistaken into believing this is the original Green Dragon Tavern. The original one was built in 1654 & was a gathering spot for the Sons of Liberty as well as the Freemasons but burned down in 1832 & was rebuilt in 1840 down the street. Although it's not the original it's still 183 years old so we figured we had to stop in at least for a beer or two. We sat at the bar & placed our order of a few Beers & the Spicy Steak Ranch Salad which was outstanding & chatted with the Bartender about the history of the place. He's probably been asked those kinds of questions a thousand times but he did a good job of filling us in on a few stories from years gone by. All in all it's definitely worth stopping in for a drink or lunch just due to the age of the place but don't expect too much because they haven't done a good job of keeping the place look the way it did back in the 1800s.

Brandi K.

Yelp
We stopped in here on Halloween weekend. My birthday is Halloween but it was a Tuesday this year and we wanted to party so visited on a Saturday. Also, I love old historic bars. This place is super cute inside. There are plenty of seats for such a small space and the bar was hoppin! Lots of people in costume, but most were young, probably college age. I was super pumped that the playlist was songs from the early 2000's so the millennials in the bar were singing along and we had a grand time. The bar staff did a great job of pumping out great drinks while they were so busy so kudos to you! There were, of course, bar shenanigans... barbie kept falling off her chair and little bo peep lost her sheep. We had a fun time people watching everyone getting safely tipsy.

Jim L.

Yelp
Best little hidden gem in Boston. Does t look like much but on a Saturday night it's rocking.

Rex S.

Yelp
We looked up and went here in the evening for dinner + a quick drink while visiting Boston, it's not an actual site but the tavern itself was opened in 1657, since I'm a history geek, I had to visit here. The tavern itself was not as big and they have some stuff on the wall but nothing overly exciting, the staffs were super friendly and helpful, I ordered patriot's favorite burger and dragon brew, the beer was quite amazing since I like light beers, hamburger was really good too the price is pretty good for what you're paying for, my partner wanted to have a steak but they only had a steak with spice on top but other than that, everything was good

Nick S.

Yelp
Great place with better history. The service was great and the ambiance was great. The green dragon tavern ale is a must.

Vanessa C.

Yelp
While doing some solo exploring I popped into the Green Dragon for a drink and to check the place out due to the history of the Green Dragon. It had a really relaxing vibe and everyone was enjoying themselves. The bartender was very attentive and poured a great Guinness! While this isn't the original Green Dragon, I'm happy I was able to pop in!

Yvette H.

Yelp
Terrible and racist bar, don't come here if you have any sort of tan or anything other then blue eyes and if your cousin isn't your spouse. Hella rude, I'm sorry that it's a painfully difficult pour a shot and over charge but to ad insult to injury you want also act like it's an inconvenience?! Ok well no wonder there is no one in here and I hope no one else comes in here. If you come here and are treated well, you may want to self reflect on why. For profit businesses should really consider treating their paying customers like maybe their business is what's paying their rent?! Just a thought !?

Rick K.

Yelp
When you can sit here and plot to overthrow the government, you're in the right place. Divey yet historical. From one oppressive government to another.

Jordan W.

Yelp
The Green Dragon is a fun little spot for a quick drink in the heart of Boston's tourist district. Located on a cute, winding street and in an area rich with colonial history, we stopped in for a quick drink on a weekday afternoon. We enjoyed a Bloody Mary while learning about the Green Dragon's storied past as a meeting spot for the Founding Fathers. Very Boston and very cool.

Jim M.

Yelp
Wife and I (visiting from CA) decided to stumble in to this Tavern Sunday evening once we heard live music from the Street. The band was fantastic, and the bartender was solid. Will definitely come visit again before we head home. Thank you!

Amy B.

Yelp
We came here only because it was close to the hotel. The atmosphere was loud but expected that since it was a pub. We found a table quickly and glad we came when we did since people piled in after us. My mom and I shared a salad and burger. They have gluten free buns (however they are Udi's so not great). The toppings on our burger were incorrect and when they remade the burger, it was charred to a crisp. Probably just threw different toppings on the same patty and put it back on the grill to melt the cheese. Food was edible but there are better places to eat.

J M.

Yelp
Great service, great history. I can't believe I didn't already know about this place.

Alex T.

Yelp
There's so much history in this area of Boston, it's insane. This is supposedly where Paul Revere started his famous ride. Although it has undoubtedly been updated since then, it was still cool to be in a pub with so much history. Definitely a good spot to stop for a pint when visiting as a tourist.

Becci S.

Yelp
Just stopped for drinks at this cute historic tavern that was originally down the street until it burned down. This place was renamed for the original in 1840. The bartender was very friendly and happy to answer any questions the people down the bar had. Ordered a glass of Cabernet (1924 is the brand they serve) and it was pretty good. Hubby ordered the shipping up to Boston because they didn't serve Sam Adams even though he was one of the members that met in the original tavern to plan the revolution. He said it wasn't bad

John M.

Yelp
Really unbelievable service. Idk it it's where I'm from or what but we sat down, ordered, waited 30 mins while everyone else around us got their food/drinks and we were still sitting there. Really pathetic.

Jackie N.

Yelp
Found this sharp and hard plastic in my drink. This could be dangerous or severe if ingested. Don't think I'll be coming back here. Old dish washer machine leaving sharp plastic around
