The Griswold Inn – Essex, Connecticut - Gastro Obscura

"The Griswold Inn opened its doors way back in 1776, when the town of Essex, Connecticut, was still known as the Potapoug Quarter of Saybrook. At the time, the original owners could scarcely imagine that, two and a half centuries later, their tavern would rank among the oldest continuously-operated inns in the United States. Nor could they foresee two approaching historical events: the British occupation of the Griswold and, later, the onset of Prohibition. Business was booming at the “the Gris” in the late 18th century. Potapoug had become a shipbuilding hub and the inn housed, fed, and sold spirits to the many shipyard workers, tradesmen, and politicians who came to town. Then came the War of 1812, a conflict between the United States and the United Kingdom, which, despite the name, actually lasted until 1815. In 1814, around 130 British marines and sailors arrived in Potapoug, intent on destroying the newly built privateers docked in the harbor. Overwhelmed and outgunned, the locals soon surrendered. The attackers, in typically British fashion, installed themselves in the local tavern. They occupied the Griswold Inn, burned more than two dozen ships in the harbor, and took hold of the town’s entire supply of rum. During their time at the Griswold, the soldiers also engaged in another very British tradition: a massive breakfast every Sunday, which, as any Brit will tell you, is a fine cure for a weekend hangover. To this day, the Griswold still serves a hearty breakfast every Sunday, a convention carried over from its former occupiers. Things returned to relative normalcy at the end of the war. The local economy was buoyed by regular steamboat services, which began on the Connecticut River in 1824. Potapoug (it would soon be renamed Essex, in 1852) was an important stop on the river, and the Griswold Inn was always full of travelers arriving by both land and water. The next major test of the Griswold’s mettle was the arrival of Prohibition in 1920. If anything, however, the inn’s steadfast defiance of the alcohol ban made it even more popular. Being in a port town, the Gris was kept well-stocked by “rum runners” on the river. The feds raided the inn on numerous occasions, often slapping down hefty fines, but the tavern remained undaunted, serving a steady supply of spirits to its thirsty clientele. The Griswold Inn weathered the Great Depression and, despite changing hands a number of times in the following decades, remained open through it all. Sailors and tradesmen continued to arrive in the local harbor, and the inn was often their second port of call. And with the establishment of yacht clubs in Essex, the Gris continued to thrive. Today, the 22-room colonial structure remains as popular as ever. Despite a few major additions, including an award-winning taproom located in an adjacent building (itself a historic structure, built as a schoolhouse in 1735), the owners of the Gris have gone to great lengths to keep its historic integrity intact. Architecturally, the inn has changed very little. The walls, meanwhile, are covered in paintings, sketches, old maps and artifacts from the Griswold’s nearly 250-year history, creating not only a warm environment but also a historical record of both the tavern and the local area. For decades, the Gris has also hosted a popular sea shanty singalong that attracts bonafide seafarers as well as landlubbers. With more than 100 pieces on display, the Gris is home to one of the largest collections of art and ephemera from the history of steamboating in the region. Look around at the many historic paintings and photographs that hang on the walls and you’ll see some true classics: drawings of steamboats by Samuel Ward Stanton, a historian and artist who died on the Titanic; Antonio Jacobsen’s painting, “The Steamboat Connecticut”; and Norman Rockwell’s “Steamboat Race on the Connecticut River,” which hangs in the wine bar. Know Before You Go As well as its historic dining rooms, the Griswold Inn also has an excellent taproom, a wine bar and a total of 34 guest rooms with antique furnishings." - ghostfilm, Tony Dunnell

We just stayed for two nights this week and had a wonderful experience. The staff at The Gris are friendly, and go out of their way to ensure you are satisfied. We were there during extreme heat and our room was not cooling down for some reason. We told the young lady at the front desk and she immediately jumped into action. She helped us move to another room without skipping a beat and made sure we were comfortable. We loved our experience and wouldn’t hesitate to come back in the future! If you love history be sure to book your stay!

Google
Loved our visit to The Griswold Inn! The place is packed with history and charm—it feels like stepping back in time in the best way. The food was hearty and delicious, and the service made us feel right at home. Live music in the tap room was a fun bonus. Just an all-around great experience. Definitely a spot we’ll be coming back to!

I loved the Griswold Inn! Extremely atmospheric and cool to experience the oldest continuously running Inn in America. We brought my Dad for Father’s Day and he loved it too. The food is also excellent, shout out to the house made waffle chips.

Google
This was a very charming and beautiful inn. However, they had a rock/pop band playing in the restaurant/bar area that was incredibly inappropriately loud. They played from 7:00 to 11:00pm. Our hotel room felt like it was in a fraternity house. The pictures were literally shaking on the wall!!! On top of that the walls are paper then so you can hear every noise that is uttered in outside your door. This was incredibly odd to have this music playing so loudly in a historic inn. They don’t even put televisions in the rooms as a nod towards de-stressing. On a side note, we also ate dinner at the restaurant and while the ambiance was very cool the food was below mediocre. Disappointing experience all the way around.

Google
A great historic spot in Essex. I’ve been twice now, the first time a few years ago and recently visited again. The food, drinks, and service are always exceptional. The mood & atmosphere is unique, striking a valence between historic & comfortable. Location is unmatched being in the middle of downtown Essex by the museum and waterfront.

Google
Went here for Holy Saturday dinner with my family. We sat way in back by the fireplace where it was dimly lit and no windows. It took approximately 15 minutes to receive the one beer that I requested, and the restaurant wasn't very busy. Meals were decent, but mine didn't come to me the way I requested. I'm not a complainer so I kept quiet. Will I return, nope.

Google
Got dinner at the restaurant here. The NY steak and the chicken pot pie were both large and delicious. The vibe is awesome too, with old maritime maps and posters covering the wood-paneled walls, a massive fireplace, and a live piano player. The service was very friendly but the food came out a bit slow

Google
We spent 4 nights at the Gris and throughly enjoyed our time! The staff was very friendly, the rooms were well appointed, the bed and pillows were very comfortable. Breakfast was continental, but good. We also went to the wine bar for a tasting and glass and food. Wonderful experience and the food was very good. The highlight for our stay was the live music Thursday and Friday nights. The bands were great, a lot of locals hanging out that were fun to watch! Great selection of drinks and Adam the bartender was great! Love his demeanor and smile. Just a really nice young man. Anyway, we will definitely find a way to go back, we enjoyed it that much!! Cheers!

Yelp
Charming, historic inn and restaurant! Had a delightful lunch with my mom at The Griswold Inn. The daily specials for 01/18/25 were scrumptious! The new Executive Chef Ian has brought another level of deliciousness to The Griswold Inn. And the carrot cake with candied walnuts and caramel were otherworldly. Highly recommend The Griswold Inn in the lovely town of Essex, CT.

Yelp
After hearing such great things about Griswold inn . I finally had the chance to visit. And I must say going around Christmas time is the best time! they even had carol singers come around each table, and the whole place was beautifully decorated . The food was amazing everything we ordered was delicious, we got an order of the duck with beans, carrots and beets the flavours came together beautifully and duck was cooked to perfection. The butternut squash ravioli with chicken was a delicious winter meal, and finally the pot pie ( which I am not a huge fan of... was my favourite dish of the night !). The best part is the menu changes with the seasons and use fresh ingredients. For dessert we ordered one of every thing, but my favourite was the chocolate mousse cake . Can't wait to be back and try the new menu !

Yelp
This place is filled all kinds of paintings, artifacts, historical documents and writings , newspaper articles and advertisements of when Essex was in its glory. Truly fascinating. We had been wanting to try this historic and well known establishment for some time, and made a reservation for their New Year's day Brunch 2025 to ring in the new year. We called to make reservations. We arrived to find the parking lot in the back completely full, but were able to find a spot on the street relatively close. There are multiple dining rooms and we were seated in the one closest to the bar/wine room area which was closed off. We had to maneuver through several of the adjacent dining areas to get to the buffet...awkward and maze like. The buffet was $55 plus tax and tip and included coffee or tea. Drinks and cocktails could be ordered for an additional fee. The buffet was not large and there were limited choices. The carving station consisted only of steak which was not the best cut, quality or taste. There were several salads and we cared for none of them. The dressings tasted oily and lacked freshness and flavor. There were a several breakfast style casseroles, fried chicken, sausage, bacon, fish, one mixed veggies dish, fruit salad, mac and cheese, and cornbread and biscuits. The Mac and cheese was delicious. The fried chicken was also really good although when I went back for a second piece, all looked burnt and not appealing. Sausage and bacon were both good. Dessert was meh. While the ladies restroom was clean and lovely, it is awkwardly situated right behind the buffet line, and just seems weird to have the buffet right there. Service was ok but could find no one to ask about some condiments (only butter at buffet station). This buffet was in no way worth the $55 plus tax and tip. The quality was just not there. There are some shops and stores and quaint houses within walking distance, and it's a short walk to view to view the CT river. We are glad we got to visit but don't foresee returning or recommending.

Yelp
We dined here on a Friday evening and also had a brief history lesson and a tour. As soon as you step in, you're teleported to the old days with the old-fashioned decor and ambiance. Although this place is massive, I highly recommend having a reservation, as they were busy the whole time we were there. We chose to dine on the outdoor patio. The service and food were exceptional, with fresh ingredients and served in a timely manner. However, the food was overpriced and portions were small that you would not get full. The menu offered numerous options, including gluten-free, soy-free, and dairy-free. We would come back again and would recommend checking out this place if you're in Essex, CT.

Yelp
The menu reflects classic dishes that have been served there for years; however, the quality of the entrees is awful. At this price point, patrons can find outstanding food elsewhere.

Yelp
We had a luncheon here for my husband today and the service was amazing but the food was beyond amazing. Wow. The fried shrimp at lunch time was perfectly cooked. The French dip sandwich's flavor was off the chart. Topped off our after afternoon with a few amazing desserts along with happy birthday wishes for my husband. A Perfect celebration! Chef Matheson is great!

Yelp
Celebrated our 30th anniversary here in November 2024. The inn was beautiful, Essex was glorious. Live music was a plus!! Loved everything about it.

Yelp
Loved this place. Came here for a birthday dinner and it was a hit. The place is on this quaint street in Essex and is also an inn. It was quite busy and glad I made reservations. The gnocchi was not the best, if I'm being honest. Just didn't hit the mark with us. The pork chop was great and the salmon was also good. The winner was definitely the desert. Service was a bit slow in general. The server was quite slow at checking in, refilling water, etc, but she was nice. We also came here for a birthday but there wasn't any recognition or anything which was odd, but maybe they don't do anything for special occasions. They did acknowledge the birthday when we checked in and even when we left which was nice. It seemed to take quite a while for the food to come back out. Server came over a few times and said she was checking on the food but we never saw her walk into the kitchen, so who knows. All in all, it's a 4+ for me, but giving the full 5 here anyway as it was an enjoyable time.

Yelp
Just dropping this note to say thank-you for all that you did to make my wife's Birthday party a wonderful time had by all of our family and friends. It was elegant from the room to the table setting and the food was delicious. Everyone was impressed and we will definitely keep you in mind for any future events.Claudia Odekerken , Events Manager went above and beyond to make this a special day. John & Mary Ellen Skorzewski

Yelp
As soon as we parked behind the building we were met with this beautiful view. The rooms kinda small (junior sweet) but it felt pretty cozy. The muffin was BUSSIN. And the staff was very nice. The only reason it's not 5 stars is because they were playing music directly below our room which was kind of soothing but also kept me awake

Yelp
Loved this place! The Griswold Inn has 2 fabulous spaces: The Wine Bar (right front entrance - there's also signage) and the Tavern (left front entrance). I walked into the Wine Bar when I was hoping to check out The Tavern. I ended up exploring both which is great bc they have 2 distinct decor & vibes. Loved them both!

Yelp
Had a romantic date-night dinner with my wife at the historic Griswold Inn. Was not overly busy which was good for us. The "Gris", as it is known, definitely had a lovely historic charm to it. The decor stays true to its era. As for the food, we ordered the potato pancakes as an appetizer. Solid app, crispy pancakes, not overly fried and true to the dish, very plain but not in a bad way. Delicious with applesauce and sour cream sides. Onto the main course, I ordered fried chicken breast w/ hot honey oil dinner with sautéed garlic kale, curry roasted cauliflower and mashed potato. Chicken was perfectly cooked and juicy. Kale and mashed were good but really enjoyed the curry roasted cauliflower especially when mixed with hot honey oil. Wife got the Reuben w/ no sides. I ended up eating half. I found it a bit dry but will say it had nice flavor with a touch of spice which I think came from the sauerkraut. My wife really liked it but I was slightly underwhelmed. For dessert we ordered the toffee pudding which was very good. Service was good, our server Melissa was great. However, took a long time for our food to come. In a busy setting I would understand but it was not and our orders were very straight forward. All in all we had an enjoyable dinner and I get why The Griswold Inn is a CT icon. I would eat here again but to be honest, I am not certain it meets the hype.

Yelp
The Griswold Inn is an institution in Essex CT! A bar and restaurant full of history and life. We enjoyed a few drinks and the potato chips in the bar area this visit, but they have a wonderful dining area and wine bar as well to check out! Buttered rum cocktail is perfect to enjoy by the fire place. It's cozy and rustic. Bonus points if you go on a Monday night and see the sea shanty's! (It's a total blast)

Yelp
We stopped in from a trip home from Foxwood's. We ordered the corn beef hash omelette and pancakes with bacon. We were served hot cornbread with maple butter to start. It was perfect! My pancakes were fluffy and delicious and the bacon was extra crispy as I like it. The corn beef hash omelette was amazing! It was served with a fresh fruit cup and hashbrowns. I am so glad we stopped in! It's quaint an adorable just as I remember. Service was fantastic.

Yelp
Location perfect, steps from water. Staff and accommodations amazing. Food great, bed/pillows super, hot shower felt wonderfully massaging. ONLY downfall is darkness in bathroom. Both switches on, still quite dark. Difficult for women to apply makeup and men to groom.

Yelp
The Griswold Inn is a historic inn and restaurant that opened in Essex, Connecticut in 1776. It was founded by Sala Griswold. It was originally known as the Bushnell Tavern and offered "first class accommodations" to travelers. The inn saw action from opposing British forces both during the Revolutionary War and the War of 1812. It is one of the oldest continuously-operated inns in Connecticut as well as the United States. It was renamed the Griswold House, or "The Gris", in the mid-19th century and later the Griswold Inn. The Paul Family have been the proud owners of the Gris since 1995. There have been multiple additions and renovations over the years. Today the inn features 33 charming rooms and multiple historic dining rooms. My wife and I stayed at the Griswold Inn last weekend for our fifth wedding anniversary. The room that we stayed in was a Standard Room with a Queen bed, which was just what we needed. None of the rooms at the Gris have a TV. This is to encourage guests to mingle with each other. We liked this concept and enjoyed mingling with other guests and staff members alike. Throughout our whole stay, we constantly saw an elderly couple always sitting at the same table in the Tap Room. We later learned that they have been married for 50 years and come back to the Gris every year. My wife and I hope we will be as lucky as them some day. Over the course of our stay, we had all of our meals at the inn. We ate each meal in a different room with a different menu: lunch in the Tap Room, dinner at the Wine Bar, Sunday hunt brunch in the Covered Bridge Room and dinner in the Library Room. Every meal was very different but they were all excellent. Our favorite was when we had dinner in the Library Room. Aside from the inn itself, the surrounding area of Essex Village was also quite lovely and relaxing. There were lots of cute shops, eateries, and the Connecticut River Museum. There were even a few events going on during the weekend, including a Scarecrow FestiFALL and a Doggy Halloween Parade. My wife and I enjoyed the Continental Breakfast in the Library Room on our last morning before we checked out. Our stay at the Griswold Inn was one for the books and we hope to return again and again!

Yelp
Nice, historic building. Very cool old art. Clean considering how old it is. No bathroom fan, heat was way too high, smelled a little like cigarettes actually. The band was a little annoying below as you try sleep but it didn't go super late. No tv kinda sucks considering the cost. $225 for a Thursday night should have a tv and a better breakfast. Breakfast was disappointing. People there were extremely nice tho. I'm glad I gave it a try but wouldn't again unless more amenities were offered or price was lower. Oh, and it's not haunted.

Yelp
I was so excited to go to the Wine Bar which was named one of the best. It was empty! Not a place to go if you are hungry as the "Starters" menu had a handful of options. The Food portions are so small as they tell you to order 2 servings. We ordered a cheese board to start with and it lacked and came with mushy grapes & 2 bite size samples of cheese to share which unfortunately ended it for me. The service was friendly. As the Inn had another restaurant with more options, We decided to go to a different shoreline restaurant to eat dinner.

Yelp
Thanksgiving dinner at the iconic Griswold Inn. What could be more comforting? Turns out, just about anything. The best one word answer..Mess! Spaced two -hour -seatings didn't prevent a scrum of 100 people waiting a half hour for a reserved table. Random luck of the draw determined your table in the atmospheric grill room near the buffet or the too brightly lit new addition -a 3 room walk from the food. Shown to our table, the staff walked away and left us to fend for ourselves. It took 20 minutes just to flag down staff to fill water glasses and take drink orders. They could not have been more unhelpful. Since nobody approached us to welcome us or explain the buffet, we asked a frantic service person how it all worked and she said 'just go in the other room to get your food' The food. It's what the term 'meh' was meant to define. average to below average, and I think I'm being kind. All in all, a very disappointing evening. Very. To anyone like me, who thinks Thanksgiving at 'The Gris' would evoke New England Pilgrim charm, it's a real turkey.

Yelp
We loved this quaint, historical hotel. It was very comfortable and full of hidden treasures. We also ate in the dinning room and were overjoyed with our meal and drinks. The food was so good, craft cocktails were fabulous and dessert was to die for. I would highly recommend staying here and dinning here if you're in the area. I'll definitely be back

Yelp
We had a delightful dinner- steak & salmon at the Inn on Saturday evening. The noise was louder than in the past, but the service was quick, friendly and the meal very well prepared. It's a wonderful historic Inn and well worth the time. I

Yelp
Had our wedding here and are glad we chose this location: all of the planning and walk throughs were easy, as was all communications regarding all aspects of the event. We had a small (14) number of people and they had the perfect ceremony and reception spots for us. Our guests had an good experience and everyone raved about the food. All of the staff was helpful and attentive and helped make our day stress-free abs special.

Yelp
Delish Fish and Chips with perfect Cole slaw and Blackened fish tacos with Griswold Inn Chips and a Revolution Ale. Great Ales on tap. We had beautiful weather to eat outside. Friendly staff.

Yelp
Beautiful old building. Nice staff. Fun scene when there's a band playing in the tavern. Food is unremarkable bordering on poor, both in the tavern and the wine bar.

Yelp
The ambiance alone is worth the visit! The food and drink is the frosting on the cake... stop in for a treat... and become a part of history!

Bob D.

Yelp
Food pretty good. Atmosphere nice, historic charm. Forgot our warm bread - a minus. Poor experience with room at inn contributing to rating.

Yelp
Cute place for drinks. Food was average. Service was great! Quiet ambiance- nice date night spot.

Yelp
I don't need to return. We were there for an 86th birthday celebration. Nice setting. Mediocre service with no real attention given to the birthday boy. Mediocre, at best food as the fish and chips tasted frozen, not fresh; filet medallions lacked flavor; short ribs were just ok; bar tender makes a poor Manhattan. Way too expensive for what you get. I do not recommend.
google avatar

Yelp
This is for the inn, not the restaurant which is very good or the bar which is also very good. This isn't really for the entire inn, either. It's for the room we had on our last visit which was on the first floor all the way to the right facing the front of the hotel. Don't let them put you there! 1) It's small, tiny and cramped with a small tiny bed, a toilet under stairs that you have to back into, a chest you can open if you move the chair they leave in front of it (but then where do you put the chair?) a closet that might be 12" wide at most and no desk or place to work. 2) It's loud, so loud. Seriously you can hear the people upstairs going to the bathroom. If they turn on the faucet (shower or sink) your pipes scream like the space shuttle is taking off. There's a bench literally outside your window where people sit and talk after leaving the bar or anytime they feel like it. 3) It has nothing but a bed and a couple chairs and a small dresser. No TV (I don't know if many rooms have TV), no fridge, no desk, no shelf near the sink (there is one above the toilet). There's nothing good I can say about this room. The hotel, however is very nice and the people are excellent. The best ever! Decent breakfast, very clean, restaurant and bar amenities on site is a huge plus. We'll definitely return but we will never stay in that room again!

Yelp
Our waitress deserved 5 stars The restaurant gets negative 4 so that's how we arrive at one star. Beware of the fare it's not good. It's a cool place to sit in and have a drink and think about all the people that have been there - but avoid the food. Especially the soup. It's a joke.

Yelp
Visited the Griswold Inn for the first time in over 20 years. Had dinner with my wife, daughter and son in law for their 10th anniversary. The food from appetizer to dessert was delicious. Service was timely but not rushed. Atmosphere is the best Will be returning soon

Yelp
This classic New England Inn (est 1776) exceeded our expectations with regard to ambiance, staff & cuisine. This was a very busy evening at the Gris, but you could still engage in conversation without struggle. The dining started with Garden Salads for my companions and the Chowder for me...& we were each pleased with our choices. We followed this up with three 12oz Prime Ribs & a Faroe Island Salmon which were all outstanding. Given the generous servings, dessert wasn't an option...but we'll be back!

Yelp
This review is for the restaurant. I ordered a bean corn soup. What a ridiculous size bowl. There were literally 6 tablespoons of soup in the bowl. The flavor wasn't even good. It was really bad. My husband got fish and fries. The fries tasted frozen. I was still starving after my 6 tablespoons of soup so I ate some of his fish. It was blah blah blah. McDonald's has way better fries (and I don't like McDonald's very much) my mother in law got the fried shrimp. I think that was a little better so she said. My advise would to be don't go here. I was here about 7 years ago and it was good that is why we went there. Seriously don't eat here. Maybe a beer if you are desperate. The server was very nice though.

Deb H.

Yelp
I have been going to the Griswold Inn since I was little. I have very fond memories of the music, the history and the food, all being fun and quality. I had dinner recently, after 30 years, and it was awful. I am so disappointed. It's like seeing your favorite band you remember in high school and then seeing them in your adult life and they have lost their voices. This is a location steeped in history and a tremendous opportunity to bring in a chef with fresh ideas and a belief in farm fresh food. Heritage food to a historic site. Bring in a bar menu that appreciates creativity in mixology. For now, just go for the music, the history, the photo opportunity but skip the rest, your wallet will appreciate it. What a lost opportunity, I hope they find themselves again.

Cathy B.

Yelp
Whip the vibe of the restaurant is fun, the food was less than acceptable for the price. The sausage sampler sold with braised cabbage was four bites of meat and a dollop of cabbage under mustard. My Cobb Salad came with Bacon Bits instead of bacon. We laughed it was so pathetic. Our waitress was very sweet. Go for a beer or f you want to check it out. Don't order the food.

Perry F.

Yelp
This was the first time as we were there with friends for lunch. As you walk into the Inn you go back in time. The staff and our server Allie were Superb! The attention to detail in the service matched the outstanding tasty gourmet food. I can't wait to bring our military family there.

Yelp
This is a fun, cool place! We stayed here after a funeral in Ct. We were having problems with the toilet in our bath but the Innkeeper immediately took care of it and upgraded our stay! The restaurant is filled with beautiful artwork and sea memorabilia. Dinner was a Reuben sandwich, and the fish and chips. Everything was good, hot and the hospitality was comforting and much appreciated. Put this on your bucket list of Inns to see and do!

Yelp
En route to visiting friends in Old Lyme, we stopped in the quaint village of Essex to walk around a bit and grab lunch. My friend had recommended The Griswold Inn. We were seated in a lovely courtyard across from the Inn. Very interesting adult beverages, great service and excellent food. The Liberty Lemonade was a combination of rum and assorted berries. Very refreshing! We both enjoyed the New England Clam Chowder. It was homemade - you could tell by the way the potatoes were cut - and delicious. My husband had the Empanadas which he really enjoyed (a little too spicy for me). My sliced steak was cooked perfectly rare as requested, and was accompanied by arugula and delicious fries. We had multiple servers, most notably Adam who did a fine job. I highly recommend The Griswold Inn for lunch.

Jill T.

Yelp
Had dinner here and was surprised at the lower ratings we had seen! It was a super fun atmosphere and the food was above average. Service was great too. Really enjoyed it!

Yelp
My mother and I came here for lunch and were shocked at how well preserved the building was. It's truly historical and there is something to look at around every corner. It's very relaxing and cozy. The food was alright but the drinks are even better. The customer service was above 5 stars. I will be coming back it was a great experience and time

Yelp
The music is what makes this place in my opinion. The food has gotten so much worse and the manager gets very defensive when questioned about food quality. He has poor customer service skills. Prob best to eat elsewhere and then go hear the bands.

Yelp
Nice menu and ambiance. Entrees are on the pricey side. Had clam chowder- a little spicy, unique flavor. Corned beef Rueben was excellent. The maritime decor gives it a New England feel. Reservations are suggested, it gets busy.

Yelp
Worth stopping it purely for the history and paintings! Good food, to be honest, not worth the price they charge, but solid. Service is very good, just not what you'd expect for fine dining. Come on Monday night and enjoy some sea chanties after your meal!

Yelp
I've been coming here for 20 years with my husband's family who have been coming here for 45+ years. We took our kids on the steam train and then stopped in for lunch. My youngest and I ordered fish and chips as nothing else on the limited menu looked very appealing. We were served frozen, unseasoned, Panko breaded, dry tasteless fish with what we could not distinguish from McDonald's frozen fries for $24 a plate. Server never asked how our meal was. When bringing the check I asked him to check with the kitchen and ask if our food was frozen. They confirmed both fish and fries were indeed frozen. Nothing was compensated. I can't believe a restaurant with a long reputation such as theirs would risk servicing such garbage. It makes me totally distrust the management and staff. We will not be Returning.

Yelp
One of the oldest continuously operated inns in the country (opened for business in 1776), with a dining room that is decorated in an old fashion way. Every Sunday the place has a buffet that they call "Hunt Breakfast". In December the menu includes seasonal game selections, the waitstaff is costumed, and the Royal Court Singers perform seasonal classics table-side I came for lunch and got the clam chowder and chicken tacos. Both were delicious. Complimentary bread and butter was tasty as well Service was fast and waitress was friendly 9

Yelp
The Griswold Inn had been on our list of places to try for so long, and our visit exceeded our expectations. We sat outside and had our delicious appetizers, but after a long, hot day at the beach, we asked to move inside. The staff was very accommodating and re-assuring that it was no trouble at all, because we did feel bad making this request. We were seated in the library section of the restaurant where we met our amazing server, Daniel. He was very attentive and welcoming. All of our entrees were fantastic, and I have to say I was blown away by the white cheddar and potato purée that came with the buttermilk fried chicken. Their desserts were all incredible too, and we left feeling we had found one of our new favorite restaurants. We can't wait to make many more visits here!

Yelp
My partner and I were celebrating a milestone event, and chose the Griswold Inn for the setting. And for the first 90 minutes, it was an enjoyable evening. The food was properly prepared, and the service was gracious and capable. But then, 97 minutes after being seated, were were confronted at our table by the hostess, who coldly told us there was another reservation waiting for our table. The message was clear: finish up and get out. Never mind that we weren't told we only had 90 minutes in which we were expected/required to dine in an enjoyable fashion. Never mind that the hostess's visit was the ultimate mood-killer. Never mind that we spent $265 for the meal, and that my wine glass was half full when she told us to leave. Never mind that we never got to order dessert or coffee. I tossed down my remaining wine in disgust, called for the check, and walked to the hostess's station. I told her I'd never been treated so badly, and that her handling of the situation was completely unacceptable. Maybe they should price their menu differently, and make every item read: "$3 a minute, and keep an eye on your watch." We left bitterly disappointed, and we will never darken the inn's doorway again. We're headed for Paris later this year, where, in comparable restaurants, you have your table for the entire evening, and enjoy long, romantic intervals between courses, because fine dining begins and ends with quiet relaxation, digestion, and the opportunity to savor the entire menu. The Griswold Inn should put a huge, yellow "M" outside, and advertise the most expensive fast food in Connecticut -- with an emphasis on fast.

Yelp
This place is pretty amazing and does an excellent job of capturing the 1776 spirit. The rooms are beautiful and they have the best showers in the world. One minor glitch was that our room A/C was not up to par. Hannah, the restaurant manager, jumped right in and solved our problem. We got a bigger and cooler room. Big shout out to Hannah; she understands hotel management perfectly. I had wanted to stay here since I lived and worked in nearby New London, CT back in 1982. It took 40 years and we left happy.

Yelp
It's been a decade since I've been back to the Gris. But ack indeed I went last week. Was I astonished by a new menu ... no. Was the offering the same as before... pretty much. The Gris is an experience. I love the atmosphere. As usual , I was not overwhelmed with the menu and the selections . It was just basic good stuff.. In the past, I've brought clients to the Gris, and especially on a chatty night , it can be a fun time. So if you're looking for a cultural experience , fine. If your looking for a big culinary experience, keep looking.
