The Guinep Tree Jamaican Cuisine - Review - Gardena - Los Angeles - The Infatuation

"It’s a good day when we hear about a new Caribbean option in town. This family-owned Jamaican spot in Gardena has a short menu of seven dishes and is takeout only. You’ll find the classics, like braised oxtail, brown stew chicken, and jerk chicken, which you can order with sides of plantains, steamed cabbage, and rice and peas. We haven’t been here yet, but want you to know this spot exists." - Sylvio Martins

Got the curry chicken! You can feel the tingle of the spices on your taste buds, so good. The plantains are perfectly cooked & sweet. The peas & rice have a nice suttle coconut flavor. Cabbage & Carrots have a great pepper flavor. Got my order togo, the box is great extra star for the non-leaking container!⭐️⭐️ I was to full to try my pastries so I will try them in the morning. Flavors are all balanced and worth a try. I personally will be back 💖

Google
I got the Oxtail and curry Goat the potion was generous more than other places I've been. The food was delicious it also came with fried ripe plantains, dumplings and salad. The owner was very pleasant and easy to deal with unlike most of the Jamaican places where they give you an attitude as if you were begging for free food lol. I highly recommend this place.

Google
As a child of Jamaican parents, I would give this plate a 8.5 out of 10! Honestly his curry chicken tasted exactly like my dad's and that was the plates show stopper! The way the meat was juicy and tender! I didn't know you could get chicken to be that way. The festival bread was good, but I didn't expect it to be more of a sour dough flavor rather than sweet, however my husband really liked it. The rice was just okay although I added some curry gravy to it and it was much better. Will I return, absolutely! I have to bring my Jamaican mama and I'm looking forward to trying the oxtail next!

Google
WARNING!!!! On this rainy day I was looking for some good ole comfort food. I decided to try this place. I called in my order, which was A large oxtail plate , 1 beef pattie , and a large callo. So the man that took my order (Tony) said give me about 20 to 25 mins because he had to make the callo. I got there in about 30mins or so. When I appoached the counter he ask me can he help me, I said yes I placed an order over the phone. I told him what I order then he says oh!, oh,!. After given him 30vmins to get it together. My plate was not ready and he seemed so confused then he said what did you order again. So, I told him again, then he said he forgot to make the callo. So He comes to the counter with this little tray, I said I order a large he says ok I charge you for the small. Then he began to say over and over. I'll make it up to I'll take care of ypu I'll hook you up next time It sound so crackish to me just like a CRACK HEAD!!! BEWARE!!!! Of this place. The reviews are lying 4.8 is a lie 17 reviews Please!!!! The food that is given dosen't come close to the food that is advertise.. Also, the food is lacking the real Jamacian Spices and flavor.

Google
This place is great the food is the bomb 💣 Straight fire🔥 🔥🔥🔥🔥 I promise you, I will tell you no lie. My first time here was a great experience. The food is very flavorful and authentic in taste. I will definitely be back. They will definitely be getting more of my money for sure.

Google
I went to Jamaica last summer and ever since I've been dying to go back because of the amazing cuisine. Now I only have to drive a few minutes up the road. This is quite possibly the best food I've ever had. This gentleman is from Jamaica so I know it's the real deal and this food puts anywhere I went in Jamaica to shame. The restaurant was clean and well maintained. Take out only for now but seating coming soon. Let me tell you, once there's seats in there, I'm in serious trouble. I will order 3/4 plates. Personally, I had the jerk chicken, oxtails, plantains, rice, veggies, bread, and cake. Best $$$ you're going to spend anywhere in LA.

Google
I ordered Brown stew chicken from this place today on GrubHub. I specifically called and told him to put extra gravy on my rice and peas up on delivery. They are as dry as the Mojave desert. The brown stewed chicken was not fresh. It was old. The best thing on the order was fried plantains. And how can you mess up a planting you can’t. I cannot give them a good rating. I give credit What credits do. But this was the worst Jamaican food I’ve ever had. They do not follow instructions, even after calling, giving them specific instructions on how you would like your food. Very disappointed wish I can get my money back.!!!

Food was DELICIOUS. Good portion size. Specials are 1pm until 4pm I think & affordably priced. Will be back

Yelp
I called to make sure the restaurant was open on a Saturday. The owner answered and they were open. He took my order over the phone and They were packing up my order when I arrived. The food smelled amazing. Fortunately for me I ordered for the whole family and we love to share. I was able to try many different things on the menu. Jerk chicken, curry chicken, brown stew chicken, oxtails l, ackee and salt fish and curry goat. Don't judge me, in most cases it was just a taste. My son loves Oxtails and did not give up much Hahaha... everything was delicious, even the sides. The vegetables, plantains, the rice and peas, the festival (fried dough with vanilla, ginger and other spices and a bit of sugar) were all great! Be sure to give this place a try for some good Jamaican food!

Yelp
- Jerk Chicken Monday Special: Flavorful and spicy, the plate came with rice and beans, cooked cabbage, chicken, and the little fried thing. The white meat was BEYOND overcooked but, surprisingly, I didn't mind it. It was still very flavorful. Everything was wet, is jerk chicken supposed to be grilled? Missed the char I get at other places. -Stewed Chicken: I've never had this dish, it was tastier than I thought it'd be. I'm not really a stew type of person. It also came with rice and beans, cabbage, and a little fried thing. -Beef Patty: Nothing too exciting. I'm not sure I would come back. Good flavors but crazy overcooked, that's a hard one for me.

Yelp
I ordered food through an app and had an awful experience with the staff at this place. The man I dealt with blatantly lied to my face, giving excuse after excuse not to give me the food I had already paid for. He said things like, "We don't get paid, the app gets paid," and made nonsensical claims about "wiping and double tapping twice." Then he went on a rant about how "other people come in here and blah blah blah." It was clear he was trying to avoid doing his job. Despite presenting him with proof of my purchase and informing him that I had been charged, he showed zero care or concern. Instead, he refused to provide the food I paid for and kept making up reasons not to serve me. This level of laziness and deceit is unacceptable in any business. I wouldn't recommend anyone visit this place, as they treat paying customers with outright disrespect and malicious intent. I have my full invoice as proof and still faced blatant refusal of service. This experience was not only frustrating but felt deliberately cruel. Avoid this place at all costs--what a terrible business. This behavior felt deliberately malicious, and it was clear he had no intention of resolving the issue. Such blatant disregard for customers is unacceptable. I strongly recommend reporting this business and considering other options to avoid similar frustration.

Yelp
Excellent food and customer service. Decently priced for amount of food you get. I got the curry goat plate and ox tail plate and both were really good and flavorful. Will return soon!

Yelp
Been here twice due to finding them in too good to go app. They're definitely using that as cheap marketing vs actually selling leftovers. When I was at the climbing gym nearby I found them and decided to go. The person in front of me picked up the last order and 3 of us behind all got turned away. I will say the portion that day looked huge and it was ox tail. Though, they completely oversold and was like you can try again tomorrow. Months later I happen to be in the area and tried it out again. Received a jerk chicken meal. Rice mixed with beans, cabbage, corn bread on the side. Seemed to be about worth the price I paid. Jerk spices had a big kick and I was definitely getting nasal drip even though I eat pretty spicy. My friend couldn't continue eating so we went to pick up something else. The place has a dining area painted in bright green, empty when I went. I'd be curious to try their ox tail but otherwise probably wouldn't go back.

Yelp
picked up a bag from the Too Good to Go app from this place, I thought it looked promotional due to the reviews on Yelp and the TGTG app. It was $8.81 total, and I got brown stew chicken with boiled cabbage, rice and beans, plantains, and a bread piece. honestly I don't think it was worth it. for one thing, the actual restaurant has their prices much higher than any other Jamaican restaurant in LA. but from using the TGTG app, it's usually supposed to be excess foodstuffs so you'd expect multiple proteins instead of just one. they also gave a bit too much rice compared to the chicken. the chicken itself had good flavor, BUT there were way too many super small bone pieces (and fat pieces) that I had to pick through with my hands to the point where it gave me anxiety. after picking through there's not really much meat. I appreciate that they're using the app, but this seemed more like a "meal" to me, when I use the TGTG app for excess foods, proteins, etc. I'd just recommend a different Jamaican restaurant, ultimately.

Yelp
I like this establishment. My Jerk Chivken did not disappoint it was fire literally spicy and I loved it. Very flavorful I will definitely be going back again very soon.

Yelp
Lawd have mercy! Had to try this place after I saw it on Yelp. It is located on Strawberry Square and towards the middle of the shopping plaza. Area is a little sketchy but the food is bussin!!!! I was greeted by somebody's uncle or grandpa. The smells coming out of the kitchen felt like home, and i already knew the food was going to be IT. I tried the Brown Stew Chicken special. It came with Rice and Peas, Cabbage , Festival and A Plantain. The meat was soooo tender and fall off the bone. The rice was perfect, not sticky or anything. Cabbage tender and flavorful, , nice plantain. Now the festival deserves its own description because I usually don't eat the festival- others are hard and flavorless but THIS FESTIVAL WAS SO SOFT AND EDIBLE. It was so good.. I had to dip it in that brown stew gravy a few times oh my God. I can't wait to come back tomorrow to try their oxtail because This place is legit. It reminds me of the small shacks in Negril. Glad it is open!

Yelp
This review is based on an order through Too Good To Go. Was in the area and saw them on the app and knew I had to try! The spot is a cute little place, when you walk in it seems small but there is a whole room off to the side to enjoy your meal. As this was through TGTG I'm not certain what I received but based on other reviews it seemed to be the brown stew chicken. The chicken itself was absolutely delicious and fall off the bone tender but it was a really small portion once you removed all the bones and fat. The rice and beans were absolutely delicious but better when mixed with the leftover juice from the chicken, the cabbage was fine, not bad but nothing to write home about. The bread was dry and I could have done without it and the plantains were disappointing and dry. For the $8 through TGTG this place is well worth it, for the $19+ you'd pay regularly I would pass.

Yelp
My experience wasn't great. (Ordered via doordash). They were out of oxtails, which was the main thing I wanted and we didn't find out until the dasher called so it was too late to cancel or change the order. Since they only offer five dishes, I wasn't thrilled that they were out of 20% of the menu. The plantains were BAD: Papery dry and no flavor. The Stew Chicken was stewed so soft that you could practically bite through the bones. Good flavor overall but the gravy had an incredibly off-putting gelatinous texture. The Curry Goat was good: Very tender meats I was so excited about a Jamaican joint in Gardena but I think they're too new and need to figure themselves out. I'd give them another chance if they ever find their footing, but I wouldn't risk it anytime soon.

Yelp
I'm almost hesitant to write this since I wanted to gatekeep this place but the food was so bomb. Literally didn't even have time to take a pic before I devoured the whole thing. Ordered through the too good to go app and I got a "surprise" combo meal that included fried plantains, rice and beans, brown stew chicken and spicy cabbage. Will definitely be back to try some of the other amazing sounding entrees.

Yelp
Found this from the "Too good to go" App. Got a good size plate and good to know the food is fresh because they use the app.. I think it was the brown stew chicken. Great recipe and meat fell off the bone. The cabbage was over done but sauce was so tasty I ate it up. The rice, plantains and fried bread all made it a great combo. I shared a little but couldve ate it all. Came back cause I love oxtail and it was a winner! Seasoning much by itself but with rice and cabbage, it all works well. Also got the jerk Chicken. Its a big coat of spices where its a slow heat. I turned the chicken over to get mostly meat and that helped. Meat fell off the bone too. Got the grapefruit drink called Tink. Was sad when the small bottle was empry. I'd drink a litter of this! I think the person working is the chef because he has that type of coat on. Not over freindly but if you cook this good, don't mind it. I want to try other food but will come back for oxtail, brown stew, Extra side of plaintains and that Tink soda!

Yelp
Amazing food, we drove from OC to this spot, didn't fail. We appreciate the good food, nourishment and space. The meat was well cooked, not dry. The rice and peas was simple and so homemade. The PATTIES! Wow, so much meat, very flavorful. Thank you for this wonderful meal. The workers are helpful.
google avatar

Yelp
Fast, friendly, delicious. Curry chicken was very fall-off-the-bone tender. Festival bread was amazingly cornmeal-y. Wish you could order that as a side. Plantains were a little hard but still tasty. Large parking lot.

Edward A.

Yelp
Food on point! Can't get any better than this in LA! I recommend this to anyone looking for great Jamaican cuisine

Sam T.

Yelp
The food here is good but the service is not. I seemed to upset the gentleman working just because I was there to pick up my food. He immediately said he ran out of vegetables and was making more and it would take about 10 minutes. I said okay I guess that's fine. He said "that's fine?" in an annoyed tone. I said "I don't really have a choice...?" Once it was ready I wanted to add a patty and he seemed annoyed by that too and didn't say a word while he got the patty and rang me up. I'm not sure if he was having a bad day or what but I'm hesitant to go back. I've only ordered delivery previously so never interacted with them directly, but this wasn't even just quiet. He seemed genuinely irritated that I walked in the door. Also, to the Too Good to Go customers, you're not getting a $24 value for your $8. As a regular customer, I got the same meal for $12 that they are claiming is worth $24. You're saving a bit but the portion seems smaller so maybe not. Definitely a marketing tactic and not an actual proper use of the app which is disappointing.

Yelp
Today was my first day coming to Guinep Tree. I live in Inglewood but I wanted to try something new. I used the To Good To Go application on my phone and ordered in advance. The amount of food was great. I received the brown stew chicken, plantains, cabbage, peas and rice, and decided to also get a small fresh fruit bowl to go. The food is delicious. I'm not from the islands but I have a good friend from Belize and we used to ALWAYS look for Jamaican or Belizean style food to satisfy her cravings. I'm impressed with the freshness, texture, and seasoning of all of the food. Just right! I'm not a big fan of peas and rice because it tends to be dry, but Guinep's is seasoned so well it didn't bother me as much. It's not the fanciest place but it WAS clean. Also, it looks like they're having a Grand Opening of the dining room that they opened up right next door. I got my food to go, but I will be coming back for more and possibly to dine in once that dining area is truly ready for guests. Tony was very friendly and professional during my visit, and kind enough to explain the To Good to Go process. Good customer service goes a long way with me and it was refreshing to receive it here. I with I had taken pictures of my meal, ooops. Enjoy

Yelp
So we just happened on this place in the Gardena area. It's newly opened Jamaican spot named The Guinep Tree Jamaican Cuisine. Ok so we tried the oxtails , we tried the Jerk chicken literally a lil spicy for me, but I'm a lightweight. THE JERK SALMON had hubby and son hooked. All the meals come with cabbgae, peas and rice and plantains. We even tried the meat pies.. All delicious!!! Thank you to Chef Tony for the fabulous meal. Thank you to Anthony for the excellent customer service. We will definitely make a return visit next time we are in the area....

Yelp
This is the best Jamaican food that I ever had! Highly recommended. I ordered on Yelp and I picked up right after the estimated time

Yelp
Food is well seasoned and tasty. We got brown stew chicken with cabbage, rice, festival bread and plantains. The clerk was very nice. We will definitely be back.

Yelp
I was introduced to this spot through "Too Good to Go!" Upon arrival , I was greeted by heavenly scents of goodness! I collected my order, curry chicken and a juice! I had to taste it as soon as I got to the car!! Oh snap...,, let's just say I went back in to stock up for the next day! Added the oxtail and jerk combo plate! Delicious!!! I actually shared the plates and still had plenty! Great good and great value!! My only complaint... the plantains were more chip-like than savory! They are new and still settling but great start from my viewpoint!!

Alexa C.

Yelp
All my good wishes go to this new establishment, to thrive and grow! First of all, the place smells amazing when you walk in. That kitchen hits you with a scent like you're coming into someone's home-- in the best way possible. The food was so full of flavor, I could not stop eating even after I was full (and believe me, portions were hefty and fair). The chicken was falling off the bone, the festival bread was a warm memory that came rushing back to me, the spices were all in order -- just amazing. Happy to have this delicious, friendly neighborhood spot for Jamaican food!

Yelp
Guinep Tree just opened and I'm glad their here. The first time I went in I had the oxtails. They didn't disappoint. it was late so I told myself I'm just going to eat some of them and eat the rest tomorrow. Next thing I knew them oxtails were gone! The second time I went there I had the curry chicken. I made no promises on eating some of them and saving the rest. I just started eating! The food here is very good and fresh but the service and the kindness of the owners is off the charts. I highly recommend Guinep Tree!

Yelp
Everything was delicious will be ordering from the place from here on out delivery service also on time

Lia E.

Yelp
Food was so good I'm so full! They really give you good portion. Can't forget the pineapple soda. Staff so nice and good full of flavor. Food so good make me want to speak Patios. I can't wait to try more items. I had the stew chicken, rice and peas, plantain and cabbage. Soooooo good! I used to go to Ocho Rios on Landale but The Guinep Tree will be my new go to !!!! I can't wait until they get more seating in the other room.

Virginia G.

Yelp
It's a family owned restaurant with some tables but more of a take out place. Food was excellent! We ordered the oxtail and chicken curry. Meat falling off bone, flavorful. The Jamaican rice and peas, plantains, and cabbage were very good. The counter person was very helpful and friendly in explaining the menu. Can't wait to go back and try other items on the menu. They also have daily specials from 11-4p.

Dan C.

Yelp
The sign out front says coming soon but it's open now. The person inside said due to city permits they can't put up the new sign. I only came here using the TooGoodTooGo app, so I didn't get to actually order the food. The chicken was good maybe a little too salty but with the rice it was good. I also don't like veggies but I could eat these no problem! My mom would be happy!
google avatar

Yelp
Amazing experience ! Great customer services and food was delicious. Well plan to go there again ! Thank you !

Sandy A.

Yelp
The food was very well seasoned! Take out only for now but management assured seating would be coming soon! I'm definitely going back! Good portions as well!

Yelp
I offer this review with complete kindness being that this place is new and still finding their footing. Let's start with what I like best. Their festival bread which is standard In Jamaican food was the best I ever had and I know all the good Jamaican spots . I ordered through grub hub which then delivered my food to somebody else so that sucked. I don't know what happened there. As a result they ran out of curry goat. The owner said not many people ask for it yet so they don't make much. That also sucked. I then ordered the oxtails and jerk chicken. The jerk chicken was good though I have had better but I would order it again. The rice and peas were standard and the cabbage was good but the portion was surprisingly small. Most Jamaican spots give you lots of cabbage. The oxtails were super tender but with no Jamaican seasoning, don't get me wrong they were good but I was looking for the Jamaican spices. The plantains left a lot to be desired. They were dry and tasteless. They could have used some butter and brown sugar or whatever the other spots use. Also the overall portion was small compared to the other places I go. The only reason I ended up here was because my favorite spot had a power outage and was closed . I want to show them so grace because they are new and still figuring things out. It is worth a visit for sure . I wish them luck and will revisit another time. Sincerly Netra your fellow citizen

Kid4 T.

Yelp
Great food and great customer service. They haven't been open long so come check it out when u can.

Lakisha W.

Yelp
Food was old and reheated almost broke my tooth on the plantains, the rice was dry and the brown stew chicken tastes like boiled water.

David K.

Yelp
Food was excellent. Chicken tender with a lot of flavor. Will be coming back for more.

Yelp
Nice new Jamaican restaurant in the local Gardena area. The restaurant was clean, the service was very friendly, and the food was really good. We had curry chicken and oxtails, with the plantains, rice and beans, and festival bread. It was all very delicious. The meat was tender and flavorful and the sides were great complements to the flavorful proteins. The Jamaican Ginger Beer must also be mentioned - it was perfect! Will be ordering from this restaurant again and again!
