"Now well into its second decade, The Gunton Arms is still an absolute joy to visit. There is an unerring simplicity to the place and an honesty to the hearty, gimmick-free and immensely flavourful cooking. Prime local meats – including from the 1,000-acre Gunton Estate deer park – form the backbone of the menu, cooked over fire in the flag-floored Elk Room, where you really feel like you're in on the action. While these cuts catch the eye, there's brilliant value to be found elsewhere on the menu, especially among offal and nose-to-tail dishes." - Michelin Inspector

We received a gift voucher for the Gunton Arms and were initially hesitant to visit after reading some negative reviews. However, after our experience, we were pleasantly surprised by many of those comments. Booking was straightforward, and the venue is easy to locate near the village of Thorpe Market. Nestled within a private deer park, the pub/restaurant offers a charming atmosphere where you can enjoy watching the deer roam while savouring a drink or meal, whether indoors or outdoors.||The service we experienced was exceptional—friendly, welcoming, and efficient throughout our visit. The food was outstanding; we started with deer liver, followed by a roast beef Sunday lunch and a pork Sunday lunch. Both meals came with generous sides of chantenay carrots and hispi cabbage. The roast beef was served as a thick, half-inch slice, cooked to your preference—well done, medium, medium rare, or rare. The pork lunch featured three substantial pieces of pork. Each meal included ample roast potatoes and a large Yorkshire pudding with the beef lunch. Whilst we didn't have wine the wine list is very impressive. We are already looking forward to our next visit!

We came here for lunch after a wonderful weekend in Norfolk. This was our final stop before London and what a find! The most wonderful setting in a secluded "park" with roaming deer. The pub is luxurious, with roaring fires and sumptuous furniture. The paintings that adorn the walls are breathtaking! I can't wait for my next visit

You park in a very large car park and enter the grounds of Gunton House via a steel gate. About 100m ahead is the Gunton Arms. As we approached the pub we could see a herd of deer, some with large set of antlers. Not your everyday pub this. Warm greeting and taken through to our table. This is a dog friendly place and we had taken our cocker spaniel with us to enjoy our anniversary meal. The food was very tasty. We were in a back area where there is less light. At times it was a little dark for us, we are in our late 60s, the table candle not quite bright enough. Very romantic as it was. We had said it was our anniversary and they left a card for us wishing us all the best for our happy event. They even placed a chocolate message on our dessert which was so sweet of them. My wife had already taken some of the letters off without realizing it was a message. 😂. This chocolate torte with superb cherries was unbelievable. Highly recommended on all counts, venue, service and food.

We didn’t stay at the hotel, just went for food. Incredible setting …not that easy to find! You have to go through the gates into the park - loads of deer running free. It was a Sunday night - restaurant fully booked ( and we had our dog) so had some bar snacks. Very friendly bar staff, nice bar, lots of character. Pool table. Food was good. Thank you

We used to visit here many years ago and decided to return. The place quite literally hasn’t changed meaning it feels tired and in need of a decent lick of paint and thorough deep clean. ||Fortunately the food was excellent ( although I would not recommend the desserts) so this redeemed it for us.

The Gunton Arms is a truly unique and unforgettable destination. From the moment you arrive, you’re transported to a world of exceptional food, stunning art, and incredible atmosphere. The setting in the middle of a sprawling deer park is simply magical. Beyond the fantastic food, the pub itself is a work of art, with a roaring fire, quirky decor, and a collection of stunning pieces on the walls. The service is always friendly and welcoming. It's the perfect place for a special occasion or a cozy country escape.

We celebrated our golden wedding anniversary there on 26th July 2025.|Beautiful grounds, gorgeous venue but disappointing meal. |Steaks chewy at £48 a go. £116 for beef brisket, not cooked evenly. Roast potatoes dry and tasteless. Small portions for veg extras overpriced and not cooked properly. |Didn’t pay for one steak as really inedible. |Not impressed. Overpriced and smug. |Still had a great evening due to my family dynamics and the surroundings of art and atmosphere. |Won’t be going back!

Considering all the hype, we thought we'd give this pub a go, and booked for Sunday lunch. What a disappointment. The staff were surly and could not be bothered. We were told we could not have coffee as it was too late. The food is mediocre...nothing special. The kids' meals were simple roasts with a pile of cheap carrots on the plate...I could have done a better roast for them. As for the artwork..it is obscene and vulgar...not even interesting. This is not some trendy London gallery, it is a Norfolk gastropub....we don't want to view pornography (check out the games room) whilst having our lunch! Don't care whether it's by someone famous...it's terrible. The whole event was a big (expensive) disappointment and despite being local, we will not be going back.

Yelp
From the drive in through an impressive entrance, to the beauty of the building, its decor and its art collection, this place is an absolute treat from start to finish. Great food from the kitchen - baked herbed scallops and brioche crab cakes were superb - to a very pleasant front of house team, this is a destination venue, so do yourself a favour, book a room and stay a while. The installation art nestled in the many acres of deer park will give you the opportunity to explore and burn off a few calories! And if it's chilly outside, open fires and a pool table offer the perfect setting to while away the hours, or simply muse over their magnificent art collection. Bravo The Gunton Arms

Yelp
Popped in for a cocktail and was impressed by the ultra cool decor. Kind of Downton Abbey meets Beetlejuice. It was around six p.m. and half of the dining tables were full. The bar was packed so I asked a waiter if we could down our cocktails at a table. His response: "We're fully booked tonight. The bar is as big as it is. We can't fit any more tables." Absolutely aghast, I finished my cocktail and went back to the car thinking how sad it was that I wouldn't be trying their menu. I would expect a snotty attitude from a thick glasses wearing hipster in New York, but I was surprised to find it in Norwich. Not recommended.

Yelp
Really nice pub in an amazing location. Considering it was reasonably busy for a Thursday lunch would definitely recommend booking in advance.

Yelp
This is a great pub / restaurant / bed & breakfast. Located just off the main road and inside a vast deer park, it's totally dog friendly, has a great atmosphere and, above all, does fantastic food. We had venison saugages w/mash & gravy and venison liver with cream & mustard sauce plus new potatoes. All perfect - and partially cooked on the open fire in the main room right in front of us. Plus a glass of super wine and some soft drinks = £40.50. Only hitch was somewhat shambolic service (it took 3 reminders to get the mineral water). Defo go there again.

Yelp
The smell walking up to this beautiful little inn is so enticing. You feel like you are entering a time past. Food is amazing and the fire pit in the dining room where they do the cooking is a lovely feature. Art is pretty exciting so keep your eyes pealed. Make a reservation if you want to eat there as it's usually booked up.
