13 Best Restaurants in Gold Country’s Nevada City and Grass Valley | Eater SF

"The Ham Stand specializes in European-style salumi, and specialties include coppa, salami, and pastrami, with a focus on local heritage meats. Located a few blocks away from Nevada City’s main street, the Stand is a great place to grab a sandwich. Options include a juicy Reuben and the Ham Standard, a cornucopia of cold cuts with olive salsa. The rotating daily specials are also worth paying attention to." - Flora Tsapovsky

How to Spend 24 Food-Filled Hours in Nevada City Like a Local | Eater SF

"A family-run butchery and salumeria that takes sandwiches to another level; the most popular sandwich is the Reuben, made with thick slices of hot pastrami, melted Gruyere, locally made sauerkraut, and Thousand Island dressing on rye, and the Ham Standard—made with house-cured Italian cold cuts (currently capicola, mortadella, and salami cotto)—also shouldn’t be missed, since all of the meats, sauces, and accouterments are made in-house; be sure to save some room for dessert." - Marisa Churchill

Google
Awesome sandos! Good value for high quality food. All the staff/leads are sincerely friendly, especially Kevin. Get the special of the day. You can't go wrong with that. Nice off the beaten path location. Totally enjoyable food!

Google
BEST SANDWICH EVER!!!! The meat and bread was TOP NOTCH! I got the ham standard and it did not disappoint. I also got a snack stick and the flavor was delightful. I will go again

Google
I finally went here..june 2nd..see receipt. I wanted to give it 5 stars but the roast beef sandwich for over 19 bucks was way too expensive for the product. It does not come with chips or soda. No inside dining but there is some picnic chairs to sit on outside. There was alot of hype..unfortunately it did not wow me. One side of the sandwich was thick and the other half was about half as much meat. I do like that they have some really nice cheeses and salamis. I did buy some chorizo sausages..hope they turn out good! No beer or wine is available. Friendly employees. I hope they do well in Nevada City....

Google
Way Overpriced. My wife and I picked up a couple sandwiches for a hike. We figured that for $20 apiece they would be loaded. They were smaller than Subway's 6" subs. Had I paid $6 - $8 for the sandwiches, they would have been ok. They weren't even loaded up with meat. We were disappointed and wouldn't go back. SPD's sandwiches are 1/3 the price and 3X as good.

Google
Stopped in for lunch and had the special for the day, the fried chicken sandwich. And easily one of my top five favorites. Not only do they have lunch but cured meats, sauces, tallow, sausage. A must try if in Nevada City!

Onica S.

Google
Went for lunch and heard they had the best Ruben in town… nope it was not. There was close to no meat in the sandwich. It was ALL fat. I ended up throwing it away. The bread was burnt. Not worth the $20+ per sandwich Not a good experience. Won’t be going back unfortunately

Google
We got sandwiches for 7 people and no one thought they were good or sizable enough to be $20 each (prices not available online). If this were a $12 grocery store sandwich it would’ve been fine but in this context it was disappointing. We also had a pescatarian member of our party, staff was difficult to deal with trying to find something suitable stating they have no vegetables on the premises until we just asked if they could do a grilled cheese. Pickle spear was sad and pitiful. Guy at the register had a sick mustache tho.

Google
Great little sandwich shop with good selection of charcuterie (cured meats and cheese). My favorite sandwiches are the roast beast and the gobbler (each $15)! The daily specials are amazing too! They also have meat from local farms, local wine and beer, bacon they cure in-house, and house-made sausages that are delicious! Check this place out if you get a chance!

Yelp
Everything was wonderful. My dad, Michael, picked us up dinner last night from there. The Rueben was incredible, as was everything else. There are no deli's around like this one. Kevin was so nice and generous. We will definitely be back. You need to check this place out!!

Yelp
I wanted to give it 5 stars but i paid 19.50 (including tax) for a roast beef sandwich. went june 2...see receipt. Sandwich does not come with chips or a drink. My boyfriends half of Sandwich was plentiful but mine somehow got lost with half as much of meat. It was good but not anything special. There is no seating inside but they do have some picnic tables with shade. We also got the chorizo sausages to go for 18.50..hope those turn out good! They do have some good cheese and salami. I lived in Nevada City for years and it has a cool vibe..unfortunately the price is too steep for the product.

Kerri A.

Yelp
I ordered the roast beef, thinking that at $20 it would be piled high with meat. It was smaller than an average sandwich unfortunately. The flavour was there though.
google avatar

David P.

Yelp
Cute little sandwich shop. Seems like they do all meats in house. They also have a few specialty cuts of steaks and cheeses. Got a roast beef sandwich, meat quality was great. But for meat, bread, mayo and some arugula. $18 is quite steep. $22 for the combo. At least they had a neat selection of drinks. Probably would never come back, my wife has made a far better sandwich.

Jack C.

Yelp
Giant piles of homemade smoke meats piled high, slathered in delicious sauces, encapsulated in delicious rolls. Cmon, people, get into the Ham Stand and buy some sandwiches!
google avatar

Andres D.

Yelp
No frills, just great meats and sandwiches. Does come out pretty pricey but quality is top notch so you do get what you pay for. Pair with a smoothie from fudenjuce across the lot!
google avatar

Yelp
The rye was really good and the pastrami was good. I've always ordered Ruben sandwiches at any deli I see. I would say it's a step above average but for 20.00 for a sandwich and no sides I expect at least a 9. Nowhere near sorry I'd skip

Jamie A.

Yelp
Amazing soups, I am excited to go back. Great service and a passionate chef! His onion soup was amazing. I am so glad I found this little treasure.
google avatar

James L.

Yelp
Wow! They have great sandwiches and IMHO they really care about the items they make. The Ruben is one of the bests I've ever had.
google avatar

Yelp
Hands down the best Ruben I have ever had in my life!! Granted I have only had Ruben a handful of times but still it was pretty damn delicious! It's a cute little shack off the road that we accidentally ran across Ans so glad to make a stop because this place turned out to be a hidden gem! Will definitely be back when in the area. Prices:$15 a sandwich (expensive for the area but they are so tasty!!) Peking: street parking up the street - parking out front too- pretty easy Wait time: wait times can vary, we waited about 30 mins for our two sandwiches- they did it would be 20 mins but I guess they were busy. So plan accordingly! Ruben: it was my favorite, absolutely delicious and full of flavor! Maybe I jsut love brisket, but ir was good! The beast: didn't really care for jt, wasn't anything special. Customer service: pretty good! Cleanliness: the place was okay, it's a shack, so you don't expect much; they don't wear their masks inside, and they had some flies- again it's slack. 2.5-3 stars so I cut a star from the overall rating! Overall, I rate this a 4 because of their Ruben was delicious!

Yelp
The hype is real. I discovered this place this week and have been back 3 times. Every sandwich has been epic. Loved the Reuben, loved the banh mi special, and the Sunday special which was Crab and Egg rolls. Looking forward to try the beast next. The reuben and banh mi have been my favorite so far. Edit: tried the gobbler and the ham standard and you can add those to my fav list.

Yelp
Stuff their meats in your mouth. Repeat! Fabulous, mouth watering, seductive slices of buttery meats await your endless swoons. I ordered a shark cootchie (ok, a Box o Meat) a week beforehand, for pick up on the Wednesday before Thanksgiving. Rolled up late morning, and was greeted by their sweet, knowledgeable, and definitely customer-focused crew. Managed to snag a tube of their delicious cultured butter too. If I didn't live 11 hours away, I'd cruise by there weekly to pick up some of their house made sausages. Git yourself over there, you will be very pleased.

Yelp
Holy sweet Jesus, Mary, Paul & Joseph...is what I uttered upon my first bite of the namesake Ham Standard ($18). Similar to a Mufaletta, this pork fiesta comes on delicious olive bread with artisan cured meats, olive salsa & provolone. I will also make the proclamation that this is the best chocolate cookie anywhere to be found in Gold Country. Owners are a real cock of the walk too! Plenty of outdoor seating, so saddle up with a remarkable sandwich & side...it's the cure for what ails ya!

Yelp
Stopped here on my way to the mountains. It was pretty darn good. I had Thursday special, fried chicken sandwich. It was pretty good. Not something that I would go out of my way to get, but if I was passing through again I would stop and get another sandwich!
google avatar

Yelp
Been looking forward for some time to stop in. I got The Gobbler on a sourdough roll. Very good. The combination of Swiss cheese, arugula, herb mayo, delightful sliced turkey on a crisp sourdough roll hit the spot even on a scorching day. Next I'll be brave and try it on the recommend seeded rye. Hubs got the Reuben and thought there was no sauerkraut. I looked up the menu and they put red cabbage kraut on it. It had camouflaged with the pastrami. That gave us a chuckle. He said that his sandwich was also very good. No skimping on the pastrami. We ate out on the patio by the huge fan. Lots of shade. Beautiful flowers. Well behaved dogs allowed. Next time we'll bring an ice chest to take some goodies home. Sandwiches made and served with a happy greeting and a smile.

Yelp
Over 100 5-star reviews by almost everyone who's eaten here...? Could this really be true...? The answer is YES! My sweetie and I ate here today and I had the oddest and most delicious grilled hot pastrami sandwich I've ever tasted!

William J.

Yelp
My roast beef sandwich was fantastic - the spread was bright and full of flavor that totally complimented the beef. Would definitely recommend and plan to go back before I leave the area.

L.A. S.

Yelp
There seems to have been a steep nose dive in quality in the last 8 months or so. All the same components are there, but it's now sub-par, sloppy, and lacking. I'm bummed to have lost one of the only good food joints in the county.
google avatar

James E.

Yelp
This was a great place to get some quality meats and sandwiches when Jason owned it but now that Rose and Kevin are owners it has gone up a notch or two. They really put some love into the food and it shows. If you are in the area stop in and get some amazing food if your not in the area drive there and get a great reward for your efforts. Don't forget to get a cookie while you are there!

Yelp
Was searching for a lunch spot while visiting Nevada City. I had ten tabs open but somehow kept coming back to The Ham Stand. So glad we checked this place out as we liked it even more than our fancy dinner at Holbrooke that same night. Its located off from the downtown area in a little nook next to a juice shop. Its small and unassuming from the outside but there was a steady line of people the entire time we were there. I was really looking forward to their Lobster Roll but they said they did not serve that anymore although it is still on the menu. They said the price of Lobster is too high at the moment. Why do I keep capitalizing the word Lobster? Anyways, I panicked on what to get after and just got their special banh mi and we also got their rueben which is their top seller. Don't come here thinking you will get a cheap meal, it ended up being ~$50 for two sandwiches, water, and a cup of soup. They were out of their other sides but hyped their potato sausage soup and it was indeed very rich and filing. One is enough to share. The sandwiches take a while to come out as they make them fresh. They're huge and and the person working said we ordered the richest menu items and it definitely tasted as such. They also had yummy local hot sauce. We couldn't finish everything so we wrapped it up and fought over the leftovers the next day.

Justin G.

Yelp
This place is pretty good. The rueben really is as good as everyone says it is. The prices are borderline outrageous, 45$ for two sandwiches if I remember correctly, but for a once in awhile thing, you could argue it's worth it. Not much different if you were to go out and dine for a night. And it's not like it's a subway, it's a gourmet sandwich shop that's putting worthwhile ingredients in your sandwich. You pay for what you get I guess, which I can appreciate. I'd recommend this place, but you'll be broke if you eat here more than occasionally lol.

Yelp
Unique find in a small town. Artisan food made with attention to detail and passion for the creative. Had a great experience and would eat here weekly if I lived local. It is a take out only place with a few outdoor tables so keep that in mind.

Bill P.

Yelp
So I was told great things about The Ham Stand and it did not disappoint. The Pastrami was tender, and so very tasty. The only problem I have is I'm from NY, and when I have a Pastrami sandwich I want at least twice the meat that was on this sandwich, and since the sandwich was already over 20 dollars that would mean a 40 plus dollar sandwich. The owner is very helpful and friendly and the place has a great vibe to it. They could work on the tables outside a bit, even though most of their business it seems it take out.
google avatar

Megan K.

Yelp
Best sandwich in the Nevada city/grass valley area! We tried two sandwiches- I had the ham standard with cold cuts, provolone and olive spread. It was amazing from the bread texture to the cold cuts, you can really taste the quality of the meat as it wasn't overly salty and you could really taste the natural flavor of the meat. Side note- this deli only uses pasture raised meat with no antibiotics My partner had the Reuben, delicious rye and a very mild red cabbage kraut with perfectly melty cheese. Their sandwiches are perfectly portioned and I would recommend packing for a river trip or hike- you'll be happy you packed it. Can't wait to come back for the lobster roll!
google avatar

Jennifer B.

Yelp
Really friendly folks. I had the smoked turkey sandwich and wanted to love it. I just didn't. The bread was dry and jeez, the sandwiches are expensive! I'm happy the business is doing well and people love it, but I won't be going back.
google avatar

Misti F.

Yelp
Excellent Ruben sandwich - you must try this place! When you walk in, the smell of smoked meat fills the Shoo. If we lived up here, I would make it my mission to try everything on their menu.

Sophia B.

Yelp
Best Reuben I've had in my entire life. 10/10 experience and 10/10 service. We purchased pork chops for dinner which were also excellent. I will be back!
google avatar

Holiday H.

Yelp
I love the sandwiches! I come here often for their Thursday and Saturday specials, which are the fried chicken sandwich and the Cubano. ONE OF THE BEST CUBANO EVER. They have fun assorted beer and other beverages. Since it's a butcher shop, I also buy other goods for dinner to make at home. Everything's really fresh and great quality. The outdoor area is cute and very dog friendly. Parking may get a little busy but it's manageable. Staffs are super friendly as well!

Yelp
We can't compliment The Ham Stand highly enough. We were so fortunate to have The Ham Stand provide catering for our wedding this past weekend, and it was absolutely perfect. All of our guests went out of their way to tell us they were blown away by the food. We requested the BBQ menu, and the corn fritters, mac and cheese, and brisket were highlights for me. But more importantly, Rose and her team made us feel very informed and taken care of throughout the entire process through professionalism, responsiveness, and clear communication. Rose was regularly responsive to questions within 24 hours- a huge feat with how busy she is with everything she does for her business. She also communicated directly with our venue to clarify questions and passed information back to us to ensure the food would be best prepared for the event and that we were all on the same page. Rose was able to provide a separate special meal for a vegetarian guest. She also prepped an appetizer plate just for my husband and I to have while our guests were at cocktail hour. That detail alone was so thoughtful and made us feel so taken care of. Food service was seamless, staff was so friendly, and they packed all of our leftovers in to-go boxes before leaving for the night. We highly recommend The Ham Stand for any catering needs, or just for a delicious lunch from their deli.

Dennis H.

Yelp
Ordered two Reuben sandwiches. They were greasy and the corn beef tasted like it was mixed with roast beef. Over all taste was a little bland. Two Reubens that tasted average and cost 39.00 was expensive.
google avatar

farrah j.

Yelp
I drive up from yuba to get a Ruben here as often as possible. It's literally THE BEST sandwich I've ever had in my life!

Katharine M B.

Yelp
What a great little place! My husband and I drove here for a day date so excited to have the lobster rolls but to our disappointment they aren't selling them right now. NOT TO WORRY! The sandwiches we ended up with were SO delicious!! I got the Reuben after reading the reviews, it was divine. One of the best if not the best I've ever had in my life. The meat was so juicy and tender, great dark rye bread, tangy purple kraut. I wasn't sad about the lobster roll anymore. My husband got the special of the day the Pork Belly Bahn Mi which was also amazing! The roll it comes on is perfectly crunchy and soft. (My husband is a bread FREAK and he loved it!) The pork belly was a huge portion and cooked just right so it wasn't overly fatty (yes ironic since it is just fat lol) crispy, tender, and succulent. We had the best lunch on their little patio. Thanks so much we will be back and send all our friends you way :)

Debra B.

Yelp
Extremely overpriced for flavorless, slowly made sandwiches. The Ruben had what some would call boiled corned beef instead of pastrami... The Gobbler was a dinky sub. $18 for just a sandwich.... Let alone, it took them 25mins to bring us 3 sandwiches.
google avatar

Jere M.

Yelp
I just had maybe the best Reubens sandwich on the west coast! As a kid we had a little mom and pop place in Bakersfield, that had fantastic pastrami sandwiches with the meat juice and savory flavors oozing out. As an adult I've been missing that experience for 45 years. The rye bread was toasted perfectly, the slice of pastrami was thick, juicy and had a nice crispy thin bark, the red Kraut was not vinegary with the perfect amount of dressing. I'll be back!

Ronald T.

Yelp
Good food! A little speedy tho. $50- for lunch for two people. That's two sandwiches, chips and drinks But, hey, EVERYTHING is getting ridiculously expensive. I don't know how much longer we're gonna survive this economy. Or how small businesses are going to make it. Sad.
google avatar

Karolyn M.

Yelp
The very best deli in Nevada City. Soups, Pasta Sauces, Charcuterie and platters. Holiday meals! Delicious sandwiches, salads with Brisket! Delicious food!
google avatar

Sally W.

Yelp
Delicious food, sometimes pricey but in todays time what do we expect. I want them all to stay in business.
google avatar

David B.

Yelp
Tastes great, but almost double the price for what your getting. If the price ever realistically adjusts to match the value, they'll be getting so much more of my business!
google avatar

Carlita B.

Yelp
Man, what happened to this place?!? I've spent a LOT of money here on meat and sandwiches over the last couple of years. But the customer service and quality of product is slipping. Last time I bought bacon, cut from the slab by owner, got it home and it was gray and dried out. Last sandwich I got, I was waiting while the owner finished his cigarette, came inside and started making the sandwich without washing his hands. That's some basic food service 101 and nasty as hell! Just stopped in this afternoon (should have known better!), two unmasked young guys were behind the counter on their phones, didn't even look up to make any kind of eye contact to answer my question just kept pecking away on their little glowing screens. I left without spending any money. Super disappointed that they stopped wearing masks in such a small space. I won't be back.
google avatar

Bob H.

Yelp
Yummy sandwiches + nice folks = a great stop for lunch! The sausages are delicious too so I usually take a couple home with me for dinner.

Ava C.

Yelp
The Reuben sandwich is the best we've ever had. The space out front is nice to sit under the shade of the trees and relax.

Noah C.

Yelp
Probably the best sandwich's I've ever had In my life!! The Ruben is crazy delicious can't say enough good things about this place and the food. Do it! Lol

Judy W.

Yelp
We ordered two overpriced pastrami sandwiches. The meat was served in chunks rather than slices, and there was no attempt to even begin to cover the bread. Furthermore, the meat, which we were hoping would be true pastrami flavor, was dry and bland. There was only a small variety of drinks, which included no diet drinks. There was only outside seating, and we were beset by a constant swarm of yellow jackets which were obviously more intrigued by the meal than we were. Not a pleasant experience!
google avatar

Blythe A.

Yelp
So glad I pulled a U turn as I was headed out of town to finally try the Ham Stand. Rose & Kristen served me up the PERFECTLY rare Beast sandwich on fantastic sourdough bread. I can't tell you how yummy this was. I typically buy sandwiches then don't finish them. I ate the whole thing. Yum.
google avatar

Jonah J.

Yelp
Got the roast beast. There was a white sauce that was not mentioned in the description. Lots of arugula, limited meat, and good bread. If your are going to charge $15 for a meat sandwich.....put mostly meat on it. Employees were wearing masks, didn't enforce mask wearing in cafe.
google avatar

Mary R.

Yelp
We've heard nothing but fabulous reviews of The Ham Stand so decided to buy a bone in ham to feed 6 for our Christmas dinner. What a mistake :-( First the price was almost triple what you could get from our local grocer, and the ham was loaded with fat. It was horrible! It was very dry and the flavor was just definitely off. We try to support our local businesses, but from now on our ham purchase will be from our go to local meat grocer SPD.
google avatar

Duane S.

Yelp
Great, tasty, unique menu items. A regular go-to lunch spot for our staff. Some of the best sandwich & dog choices in the area, not to mention their jumbo cookies.

Maritessa A.

Yelp
Stopped by today for a late lunch after a morning of hiking and WOW this place is a gem!!! Thanks to other Yelp reviewers who raved about the Reuben sandwich, we knew we had to try it. This is THE BEST Reuben sandwich I've ever had!!! THE BEST!!! Every ingredient was terrific on its own - from the toasted bread, to the perfectly seasoned juicy meat, the melty cheese, the picked veg - and all together it is basically happiness and comfort in a sandwich!! The meat is just too good!! I can't wait to come back!!!
google avatar

Jacqueline B.

Yelp
This place is meat HEAVEN. Just the smell walking in is an indicator of the delicious foods they have in store. We ordered a scotch egg, reuben and some breakfast sausage for tomorrow morning. This was my first scotch egg so I have nothing to compare it to, but its like a compact breakfast - hardboiled egg, wrapped in sausage, breaded then fried. Paired with dijon to cut the fat, it's a flavor bomb. I'm pretty confident EVERYTHING was homemade at this place from the rye bread, thick generous chunks of smoked meat, bright purple kraut all toasty and melted. The rueben was absolutely drool worthy. I sort of wish we had skipped breakfast because we would have ordered more food. We will be back!
