Best Bars and Restaurants in South Lake Tahoe | Eater SF

"The Hangar is a place to hang out for a while, sip a beer underneath the trees, and celebrate a great day spent outdoors with friends, family, and, often, live music. After the sun sets, patio lights buzz through the trees. The Hangar curates a draft list of 30 craft beers, with many sourced from indie breweries across Northern California and Northern Nevada. Local food trucks parked onsite provide the grub." - Julie Brown Davis

We love the Hangar. They have a great new music series this place is really cool! Drum outdoor vibes, food trucks and tasty beverages.

Curt Walz

Google
Exceptionally friendly staff, incredibly varied and robust selection of beers. We got there 20 minutes before closing on Memorial Day Monday, and while we were expecting to get turned away, but he poured us a beer and chatted while cleaning up! Great experience.

Alexis

Google
This is a perfect venue! All the staff were super friendly and helpful. Very clean space. Came for a concert and the vibe was amazing. Can’t wait to come back again!

Chris Zaiko

Google
Best place to hang out in the basin (north, south, east, west and truckee included). Excellent beers on tap that are always changing so it doesn’t get old. Great food trucks. Huge outdoor area with artificial grass that is great for sprawling out, large groups, and families. Super friendly crew. They have a concert series in the summer for us growd-ups only which has become a new date night favorite.

Google
Everything about this place rocks if you're into craft beer! They had an awesome amount of taps to choose from ranging from DIPAs to sours to German lagers, and the beertender was very nice in letting me try a handful before deciding. The atmosphere is supreme. Seriously, even the bathrooms are ridiculously well decorated! I loved all the lighting and the artwork. And, even if you're not into that kind of thing, it makes a difference to visit a place where there is clearly pride taken in the business. Plus, who DOESN'T love to drink in a warm igloo in the snow?! I'm sure the sprawling outdoor space is amazing in warmer months, but there was plenty of seating between the inside area and the three outdoor igloos for the January visit we had. And we will definitely be back before we leave town!

As complete tourists, we stopped by here after seeing a recommendation online. Drinks were great! I’m not into beer but the woman who served us let me try a couple before we ordered and my husband had a couple of different drinks that he really enjoyed. The ‘Mexican’ food truck was open and we ordered loaded fries (can’t remember what they were called). They were good, we asked for them extra crispy and they could’ve been more crunchy but were super tasty nonetheless. The one thing that let this place down was the kids running riot. You walk in and see a big board saying ‘this is not a playground etc….’ but there were kids running round everywhere, climbing the fences and jumping off of tables. Whilst this is not the bars responsibility, it felt more like the outside of a Wacky Warehouse rather than a drinking establishment. It’s a tricky one, as parents should watch their own kids but we felt because it was outside, people just didn’t care. If you’re going to put up bold signs, the behaviour needs to be monitored. If we were to go again, we’d go later when there are likely to be fewer children. It’s a great spot with games and tons of outdoor seating, definitely worth stopping in if you’re in South Lake Tahoe! Drinks and food were reasonably priced too!

Google
Good beer and pizza. Outdoor seating is really cute, I just wish they had doors or blankets or heaters that warmed our lower body. The heaters they have are great for your upper body.

Google
This is a great spot to visit in South Lake Tahoe. There is a great beer selection on tap. They have bottles as well. They have a lot of craft breweries from CA. There’s a nice variety of beers, from sours to IPAs, ciders to Hard Kombucha. There is plenty of room in the nice outdoor Biergarten. There’s a 21+ game area with corn hole and bocce ball. Food trucks are there permanently. The have wood fired pizza and hot dogs. Both are great. Try out the Chicago style hot dog, you won’t be disappointed! There a lot of parking for free in the lot in front. Highly recommended. Probably one of the best places to grab a beer in the area! It’s also kid friendly with plenty of room for them to run around. There is a dog friendly area as well in the front of the tap room.

Yelp
The Hangar is our go-to spot every time we visit South Lake Tahoe, and for good reason. Tucked beneath tall pines, this outdoor beer garden serves up serious vibes, relaxed, dog-friendly, and effortlessly cool with great service. Their craft beer flights are a must-try! The atmosphere is super inviting: picnic tables, music, plenty of open space, and that mountain air you can't get enough of. Bonus points for the igloo-like domes and how dog-friendly the whole place is. Highly recommend if you're looking for great beer, relaxing vibes, and a little sunshine.

Yelp
We came here with some friends and our toddlers. Beer selection is ok, only one import choice, a Weihenstephaner which was good, no cider or wine options though. One Mexican food truck was open this day, and the food was below average to borderline gross. Very cool to see the big yard they have, about an acre of turf under the trees, but the sign to the entrance of the yard is fairly offputing. It says something like "Not a playground, dont leave your kids unattended, no running, screaming, climbing, or having fun(ok i made up that last one but it felt true.) I guess these people have never met toddlers having fun. Sure I'm not gonna leave my kid unattended, but I am gonna let her run and have fun. Pretty lame though that they have this awesome large grass area, but no play structure, toys, no toys allowed or really anything to keep our kids occupied. Great place if you don't have kids, but since I do have kids and still enjoy beer and enjoying the outdoors with my family, I wont be coming back.

Yelp
Absolute favorite spot to grab beer in SLT. They have an incredible selection on tap and a variety of food trucks to choose from if you are hungry. Our favorite is the pizza truck. Check The Hangar's website for each trucks schedule. Select areas (off of the turf) are dog friendly and there are plenty of spots to park your bike. During the Summer months it can get crowded and the parking lot can fill up.
google avatar

Miguel L.

Yelp
They have wifi but it's only for 60 MB which means that you can't come here to do some work and enjoy a couple of beers because 60 MB is sort of useless. I am willing to pay a fee to get more Internet access so that I can stay longer, but there is no option to pay for more Internet. As a consequence, my stay was on the 15 minutes. I'm heading to the next taproom down the road.

Yelp
Cool vibes, open concert is the perfect setting for Tahoe. Big enough capacity that it doesn't feel packed.
google avatar

Nicole S.

Yelp
All beer no wine or cider. They had a good pizza food truck outside. The vibe is cute, definitely a good spot to check out. We were given a recommendation for a good wine spot from the guy working there.
google avatar

Camden H.

Yelp
The food trucks are fun, although it is not really family friendly, I get that it is hard to be a bar that allows toddlers to have fun, but why in the world do yall only allow 21 year olds to play corn hole? There are people who can drive but not play corn hole. And the sign, yall would honestly be a 4.7 if yall just put it somewhere a bit less imposing, the beer is pretty good though.

Teri F.

Yelp
Beautiful outdoor space to enjoy an amazing selection of craft beers! More awesome styles and local California and Pacific Northwest breweries than anywhere!

Lauren K.

Yelp
This place is awesome! The drinks are great and there's always something new to try. The food trucks rotate schedules so there's different options daily. Everything we tried was very tasty! The outdoor seating area is huge and was a great place for our little nephew to run around and burn off some energy. We were only in Tahoe for a week but ended up coming here 3 different times. We will absolutely be back on our next visit!
google avatar

Charon R.

Yelp
Edit: Back the next night for two pints and a pizza. Great service and everything delicious! Absolutely delicious IPAs, quick service, and a fun outdoor space. There were two food trucks on site although we were headed to dinner later so we didn't eat here. Loads of seating outdoors under the pines and in the shade. When we were there part of the outside was set up for a wedding reception. Nicely done and still plenty of space for walk-ins like us.

Christopher Z.

Yelp
The hangar is cool little spot in South Lake Tahoe for craft beer enthusiasts! It got a small little serving area inside with some couches and tall table for those who like it indoors and outside there are lots of picnic tables and areas for groups- including see through igloo-like domes with picnic tables and space heaters inside for the real outdoor beer drinking enthusiasts! Also located onsite are several food trucks. The staff are helpful and kind (great service) and the crowd is great!
google avatar

Winston H.

Yelp
The food was good, the music was good, but the pot smoke drove us out. It was overwhelming and super rude. I would think the venue could lose their license allowing this. It was the group leaning on the fence last night.

Yelp
Hold up! The Hangar has been here for 6 years and we have never stopped by?!?! Crazy! Fun spot, loved the fire pits, and the service was perfect and attentive! The outdoor area was full of fun too! Food trucks were there but we didnt have any, but thats not why we were there! We will be BACK! The beer selection was pretty awesome too, something for everyone!

Yelp
Hello, unfortunately I cannot leave a good review or high rating at this establishment. My very legal friend (who is 23) was denied service and accused of having a fake ID, even though her ID was very real. Instead of actually trying to be productive and find a solution, they instead shot down every avenue to verify her age, including calling the authorities and using her passport. We weren't going to publicly comment or leave any bad reviews, but once the staff decided to publicly make fun of my friend in front of other customers, we cannot let this go. My friend left a very honest review of her experience and the response from Nate, the business owner, was extremely rude and lacking in any type of accountability or customer service. Although my friend cannot respond to Nate's comment, I want to add her response here: Hi again! No one was under 21. I'm glad none of you know what a real ID looks like. Super professional! If you thought it was a fake ID you should have taken it! I offered to call the cops and you said no. I offered to show my passport, and guess what? You said no. I really love being told to go somewhere else. Once again my favorite part was being made fun of in the bathroom line while the bartenders were taking shots.

Yelp
Since my last review all the area is updated. This place continues to be one of our favorite pit stops during our bike rides--it's like dangling a carrot before the horse! They consistently offer an impressive array of brews, ciders, and kombucha, catering to all tastes. Today we had 2 selections from Portland, OR's Great Notion brewery. 1. Electric Headband - A sour inspired by snow cones. My wife enjoyed it, but as someone not particularly fond of sours, it wasn't for me. 2. Single Stack - A stout infused with coffee and maple syrup. It was delicious. Be sure to visit their website for information on special events. And if, like me, you find picnic benches uncomfortable after a while, feel free to bring your own chairs. Cheers!

Annika S.

Yelp
Hello everyone. If you decide to come here, be aware of a brunette bar tender with tattoos. She's about 40 years old and will deny you if you are 23 and have a valid ID. After she already denied you, she will also approach you outside of the bar, cuss at you, and accuse you of drinking a beer. In addition, if you go inside to use the restroom she will be taking shots. Do not fear, on top of everything else, she will point at you and laugh with her fellow bartenders. - From a gal just trying to have a nice evening (with a valid ID)

Tiffany S.

Yelp
Awesome place to drink and hang out! Everything was delicious. Will definitely be back!

Yelp
What an awesome place for a pit stop while taking a drive around the lake! Huge selection of beers and some ciders, both draft and in cans. They also have food trucks although I did not partake. The staff were very nice as well. Lots of dogs and plenty of room to enjoy a drink under the trees. I would definitely come back here!

Yelp
The Hangar is always a must stop spot whenever we're in Tahoe. The beer is amazing, they sometimes have live music and food trucks, but the place itself is amazing. they couldn't have chosen a better location. You can sit back and enjoy a beer while feeling like you're on vacation. It's really so great. It's also kid friendly. But be warned, only well behaved children allowed. Which really is to be expected. My parent pro tip for you is to bring games, coloring books or tablets with movies on them. It will be an enjoyable experience for everyone. It's essentially a restaurant, not a playground so your kids shouldn't be running around like wild animals. I say this as a parent of 2 children that are 6 and 9 and I have been going here every year for the last 4 years. So if I can do it, you can too! ;). If you're in the area, I highly recommend.

Yelp
digged the beer the ambiance was adorable food truck was okay. there is a grass area but no dogs were allowed so alot of the dogs were coralled up in a smaller section by the entrance. it was okay

Cailin L.

Yelp
Awful time! it was my first time coming here and I was so excited. The bartender would not serve my legal best friend and we had the worst time. They claimed that my legal best friend had a fake ID. Her ID is 100% real. Then they gave us attitude and stank eye. 0 star rating.

Colby T.

Yelp
Owner had no respect for the guests, was extremely pushy and disrespectful. There are plenty of quality places in South Lake, choose literally anywhere else.

Torrie H.

Yelp
We are in Tahoe for the weekend and we just tried to go the Hangar for dinner and they were having a ticket only event and you could not just go in and have beers and food from the food trucks without paying $35 per person. What the heck. Very very disappointed. We had a group of 14 and would have spent hundreds of dollars on food and drink but now we have to find another option for dinner. I would not recommend this business if there's a possibility you might be turned away unless you want to pay an exorbitant cover charge for some random concert.
google avatar

Jenn M.

Yelp
Beer was good; hot dog food truck was yummy and the place feels clean! No dogs on the grass area and a sign reminds parents it's not a playground. Was nice to not have kids and dogs overrunning the place (and I have kids and dogs). Thank you!
google avatar

Yelp
Without a doubt the best brewery in South Lake Tahoe! Such a great selection of beers. Staff is great and the outdoor are is so spacious and split into different sections for people with pups. I love coming by here when camping nearby. Too many great beers on this visit to recommend any specific. I simply recommend getting a flight and going with your favorite. On this occasion they had two food trucks parked up in the grassy area which offered hot dogs and pizza. I opted for a slice of cheese pizza which was a little pricey but pretty good. Do yourself a favor and come by The Hagar, you won't be disappointed!
google avatar

Sara C.

Yelp
Fun spot to stop when in south lake! Good selection of tasty beers! They had a pizza and gourmet dogs food trucks while we were there. We opted for the hotdogs and they were really good. Dog friendly which is great! However, just to note dogs are only allowed in the front patio area not on the nice grass turf area which was a little bit of a bummer. But overall, fun place to enjoy a drink and the outdoors!
google avatar

Heather J.

Yelp
Friendly faces with an apparently bottomless well of passion and knowledge about the beers they serve - that's what we encounter the moment we step in this charming, neighborhood yard-style setup. And a fab selection of beer, both on tap and in the cooler. Only one food truck was open, but we liked the place so much we bought food from the other truck (meh, tbh), a hat, and a four-pack of an orange-marshmallow beer. Fun!!
google avatar

Brittany B.

Yelp
We stopped by after a long day of tubing and glad we came here! They have an awesome selection of beers to choose from, as well as small indoor seating. Since we came during winter, we sat in one of their warm "igloos" that came with a propane heater and a large circle table. The service was quick and friendly, and we loved the pizza food truck that was on-site that day. Definitely recommend!
google avatar

Katherine S.

Yelp
We go here every time we are in town. Dog friendly, although they have areas that are off-limits to dogs, too. (It is spacious, and the division makes complete sense.) Dogs must be on leashes: common sense. Great selection of beers. You order at the counter; the bartenders are knowledgeable and personable.
google avatar

Scott P.

Yelp
I love the atmosphere at this location. They have a large outdoor area to hang out and several food trucks. The beer selection is top notch. I plan on coming back multiple times while I am in town.

Yelp
Welcome to South Lake Tahoe. Fall is kicking in and there is no better place to sit outside and enjoy the Hangars hand curated beer menu. Dozens of beers on tap and a hand selected cooler of beers from around the area. It's a place you can get something special. I've been here a couple of times and the outdoor environment is second to none. You wait in line, it usually goes pretty quick, and pickup your beer. There are picnic tables, cahirs and a big artificial grass lawn to enjoy yourself on. A stage for live music and a corn hole area round out the fun. Families are around and there is plenty of room for kids to stretch their legs but they do ask that you keep your more rambunctious kids at bay. It's a great spot on the west side of town and worth the visit.
google avatar

F H.

Yelp
Great beer at a decent price. Very nice area to hang out and enjoy a beer and a picnic. Trees for shade all over as well as some domes for people looking to get out of the chilly air. We definitely appreciated that this bar was adult friendly, i.e., disruptive children and dogs were not allowed. There are adult only areas too.
google avatar

Caitlin R.

Yelp
Solid spot in Tahoe. There were 2 food trucks that were available when we were there on a Friday (Mexican and Pizza). Both trucks had delicious food. There are a lot of beer options to choose from and great outdoor space. Would go back.
google avatar

Ewa U.

Yelp
South lake needs more of these types of local x visitor - craft beer- pizza oven - live music --- social scenes. Great place to bring your best buds or fam and jig to some live tunes and dancing. Enjoy the outdoor oven for some fresh pizza created by the team. Great beer on tap-- Pliny too for those that like it! Only disclaimer - no dogs allowed inside the "grassy" turf area whose live music happens. It's a shame really - but you can snuggle w your pup outside of that area as it does have tables and ample space. Hoping fire season ends soon so that you guys can come back to your full glory of food and fun! Cheers

Macy P.

Yelp
Absolutely loved this place! Great vibes, great beer, great food trucks, and love that it's dog friendly!
google avatar

Yelp
Got a Chicago dog and the blonde 16oz. big grounds. Had a pizza and Mexican truck today. Game are is blocked off for 21+. Should def do a little shaded section for the kids to play in. Would encourage bringing the families over and generate more $. Fun property though. Right next to put put golf place.

Yelp
This place was coincidentally enough recommended to me by someone who works at KC Kombucha in Oak Park. I had brought my best friend to Reno for the weekend for his birthday and we decided to spend Saturday up at South Shore. My sisters boyfriend is from there so he planned our whole day. I was really excited when he mentioned that The Hangar would be included in our itinerary. We arrived about 1:30 and it was already pretty filled. Parking can be difficult to find but we got lucky enough to snag a spot. You order inside where they have little seating. The menu is above the taps but they also have QR codes you can scan. The menu has a nice selection and the staff is really friendly. There are many places to sit outside and staring May they even have MORE seating all closed off. It looks like a picnic area. They always have food trucks too which is really cool. For this visit they had pizza and hot dogs. I love the vibe here and wish it was closer. I would be spending all my weekends here. They have gender neutral restrooms, apple pay and Color Chug nights, HOW FUN!!

T F.

Yelp
This place is awesome. They have a wide variety of beers to please everyone. They alternate selections which makes it fun if you are a regular. The staff-totally chill. The picnic area is huge so no matter how crowded it gets in the summer, you have plenty of space to be comfortable. They do a great job here. Anytime we need a gathering place, this is where we go and everyone is always happy. See you there!

Julie C.

Yelp
Great place to hangout and have a beer. They have a lot of really great community events.

Yelp
Absolutely a must when visiting Tahoe!! My boyfriend and I came to Tahoe for our anniversary, and The Hangar was the perfect spot for a midday brew/snack. Staff were all incredibly friendly. Dogs are allowed/welcomed! Great local beer selection and lovely set up - with indoor seating, outdoor picnic tables, and igloos with heaters. Food truck around the side as well. Definitely would recommend to visit!!
google avatar

Radhika S.

Yelp
The coziest place to just hang out over some beers :) my fiancé and I were on the hunt for a brewery/taproom that really exemplified the Tahoe vibe while also serving up some quality brews. We found both at The Hangar and had the most genuine time together! We ordered a flight based on our individual tastes. Neither of us are huge fans of IPAs, but they still had plenty of beers to choose from! The staff were very helpful with our choices and explained the exact flavor profiles of the beers we were interested in. I chose a couple of sour/wheaty beers while my fiancé chose more unique flavors. We finished our flight off with a beer that tasted just like a campfire s'more! Since it was cold outside and the heaters weren't working that evening, we were able to snag a spot in one of the few igloos. We paired our yummy flight with a couple of delicious hot dogs and a pizza from the on-site food trucks. If you're looking for something casual to do with friends or loved ones in Tahoe, this is it!! Highly recommend :)

Lynn D.

Yelp
Love this place! Tons of great beers on tap and a huge outdoor beer garden/ game area. Friendly beertenders.
google avatar

Ozzie T.

Yelp
The Hangar is a must stop every time we visit Tahoe, great environment, good food, great variety of craft beer, love that they carry Alvarado & Humble sea beers. The kids love the large area to run around.
google avatar

Erica E.

Yelp
Cute little brewery with friendly staff. We really liked their sour beers. Highly recommend this spot if you are in the area.
google avatar

Brittany L.

Yelp
I got a flight with a beer with kombucha, a seltzer, two sours, and a cider. They are all excellent. The bartender was very friendly and helpful with picking out what to get as I am not a big beer drinker. The facility is clean and well maintained. I will definitely be back!
google avatar

Briana V.

Yelp
Wanted to stop by and see what beers they had on tap . This was my first time going into Hangar and the lady with longer hair and glasses that was working was a little rude , not very welcoming or helpful . Also noticing the eye rolls that we were getting were super unpleasant. Let alone ask me if I wanted a sample or recommendations . I also wished they had more sours on tap Burning barrel makes amazing sours so I was surprised that they were not on tap . Glad I went but won't be returning .
google avatar

Kelly H.

Yelp
Great outdoor patio surrounded by big trees and filled with patio tables (nicely spaced out so it didn't feel overly packed). Beer flight and a hot dog from the food trailer ended our day of hiking perfectly. Also they have a great big space for kiddos to run.
google avatar

Ried S.

Yelp
Friends wanted to come here to try a particular beer that is sold only here in Tahoe. Loved the great outdoor vibe, even in middle of February - well, it happened to be around 60 degrees. Very fun to sit back and enjoy a few beers. People were friendly and easy to strike up a conversation with. Some even brought their dogs. The parking lot was a bit of mess, but shows how great the place is - just packed.
