So, unfortunately, when my husband makes hotel arrangements, I've learned to be a bit skeptical. However, I was pleasantly surprised by his selection of La Quinta Inn & Suites.
Our main goal for this New York trip was to see Phish for two nights at Madison Square Garden. This hotel is a very easy less than 10 minute walk from The Garden, so if you're int he city for the sole purpose of seeing a show (or game), this is a great choice. Not only is it a short walk, there's one direction "Just turn right, and you'll hit it!" (True.)
I have stayed at another nearby hotel (Hotel Pennsylvania) and was disgusted...not so here. La Quinta Inn & Suites was clean and comfortable, but yes-- the rooms are tiny. Then again, this is NYC -- you shouldn't be spending too much time in your room! It hit all the marks I cared about:
-Check in was easy, and the person helping us, Tom, was delightful and extra-friendly. Shout out to him.
-The lobby is small but cozy. It was winter and they had the fire roaring and free hot chocolate. There is free wifi that was very reliable and fast and there are also computers in the lobby you can use. All of the passwords you need are provided at check-in.
-Elevators were nice enough, but it is quicker to take the stairs
-Breakfast is just eh- it's good for a bite to hold you over (some cereal, waffles, donuts, bagels) before you head out for the day. If you're like me and wake up super early, it's a good hold-over snack until the rest of your crew is ready for real breakfast!
-The room was small and the most notable flaw was no refrigerator. That made it tricky when we returned from dinner with leftovers and realized we didn't have one....so we just ate it again. Perhaps if we had asked at the desk, they would have stored them in the fridge for us. The bed was memory foam and quite heavenly. The TV was large and swiveled towards the bed. The shower was clean (I'm quite picky!) and had plentiful hot water and good pressure. There was a closet with safe, iron, hairdryer, etc, the basis (minus fridge)
-The cool part of the location is that even though it's so close to everything touristy (Herald Square, etc), it is located in Koreatown. If you haven't explored it, you should. There are lots of cool little Korean beauty shops and interesting food galore!
-There is a rooftop bar that is supposed to have a nice view of the Empire State Building but unfortunately it was closed when we went up to it.
Housekeeping was respectful and left us alone (we left the do not disturb on the door the whole time.) It was really cute, one time I came out and saw one of the cleaning women and she was so concerned that we didn't have enough towels and gave us more (We were fine, but it was still nice.) When we checked out, they immediately called us to let us know we had left a sweater.
Overall, this place is not big and glamorous, but it is clean, friendly, efficient, and convenient. If you are on a budget and need to stay near midtown, I recommend it!
