11 Big-Deal Banh Mi in Portland - Eater Portland

"If picking up, it’s hard to ignore the unmistakable scent of freshly baked bread while approaching this Montavilla shop. Those loaves are the foundation for The House of Bánh Mì’s substantial Vietnamese sandwiches, generously filled with sliced barbecue pork or even egg whites, with a healthy dose of what the restaurant refers to as “egg butter,” a creamy house-made condiment. Takeout and delivery is available." - Krista Garcia

Love to get my banh mi fix here if I'm on this side of town.

The House of Banh Mi is hands down one of the best spots for authentic Vietnamese sandwiches in town. I always go for the #3 thịt nướng (grilled pork)—it’s my go-to every time, and I highly recommend it. The pork is perfectly grilled, flavorful, and pairs so well with their fresh, crispy baguette. They don’t skimp on the fillings either—plenty of pickled veggies, fresh cilantro, and just the right amount of sauce to tie everything together. Beyond the food, the service is what really sets this place apart. The staff is always friendly and welcoming, making you feel like a valued customer. Chris, in particular, goes above and beyond—if you're a regular, he greets you by name, which adds a nice personal touch that you don’t get at a lot of places. Whether you're a first-timer or a regular, The HOB delivers consistent quality, great portions, and a warm atmosphere. If you love bánh mì, this spot should be at the top of your list!

Google
The bread was delicious and I think they've got the rest of the sandwich game down packed here. Solid light meal for a very good price. There's not much in the way of seating though, and the dining area is pretty spartan. Probably best to order to go if you want to eat in a more comfortable spot. That's not to disparage the restaurant though, the food is excellent. Just expect some rudimentary tables and chairs. It's a sandwich shop.

Pros: • Food, hot and sandwich was very hearty • Friendly service, guy was very nice and polite • Prices are very affordable compared to many other Cons: • Parking (out of their control but be aware) • Atmosphere, kind of dingy for some people, but I was okay with it

Google
---drinks --- Vietnamese iced coffee ⭐⭐⭐⭐⭐ - Portland ca phe beans - not overly sweet --- food --- Sliced BBQ pork with pate ⭐⭐⭐✨ - not the one I meant to order. - would get the not sliced one next time, the grilled one Meatball ⭐⭐⭐⭐ - my partners rating was 4/5, I didn't want to taste it though because it was sort of a mushy looking meatball - looked super flavorful though!

We have been coming here for years. Food is always fresh and delicious. Service is great. Highly recommend the house special, and some spring rolls. Thanks!

Google
Great sandwiches! Not sure what more to add. Two gripes though: 1) too small of a straw for the avocado smoothie I struggled to drink due to 1) and 2) not allowing someone to choose their tip amount after tapping their card. Number two is a major issue just cuz not everyone is able to tip the same amounts and if another amount is chosen by y'all it could be devastating. I trust y'all but still kind of sketch. Overall great banh mi. I wonder if they could be made with thinner buns tho or would that defeat the purpose?

Google
My husband and I were visiting Portland for the weekend and stopped by to pick up a couple sandwiches - grilled chicken & pork. The staff was super friendly, sandwiches were made promptly and were delicious. They had great social distancing in place, even asking us to wait outside until our order was ready. The sandwiches were so good we’ll be happy to stop here again next time we’re in Portland.

Google
Great place! Atmosphere was lacking BUT what it lacks it makes up for in hospitality and flavor! We stopped here on our way through town and we really enjoyed our bahn mi. It was fresh and flavorful! We’d definitely eat here again if we lived nearby.

Yelp
I came here a while ago and had amazing service and kindness from the people who worked here, so I wanted to write a short update on my review! I came to pick up a small catering order for a Vietnamese Student Association at my school, and the staff was so friendly and also gave us some eggrolls on the house! All of the banh mi was so delicious and we got raving reviews from the students who ordered them. The sandwiches are big, meat portions are generous, the veggies are fresh, and the bread is both crispy on the outside and soft on the inside. Definitely one of my favorite banh mi spots in Portland, and I highly recommend.

Yelp
Good enough banh mi at a decent price. At our last visit we went for the thit nuong (grilled pork) and the cha lua (pork roll). Adequate amount of meat and pickled vegetables. Good bread. OK service and ambiance. Three-and-a-half stars rounded up to four.
google avatar

Venie N.

Yelp
Sooo good! This is the best place to get banh mi. It was made perfectly. I had the onion tofu banh mi and I loved it. I love that they cater to vegetarians. The place is small inside with just a few tables. The people working there are very friendly and helpful.

Yelp
This place is getting a 4/5 stars due to service. The guy that takes your order seems like he was either having a bad or doesn't want to be there. Also he was a little rude to his employees with an attitude. All I can say is cheer up please. I ordered a grilled pork banh mi. It was well marinated and delicious with lots of flavor in it. The bread was really crunchy and definitely filled me up for lunch. It's a small little shop almost in the corner. Make sure to park on the street for parking. There's a couple seats inside to sit but I took mine to go.

Yelp
bombdotcom bánh mi!! Grilled pork is well marinated and deliciousssssss, like the best grilled pork banh mi i've ever had. Every bite exploded with flavor and the sauce was amazing, not dried or overcooked and came out hot hot! Satay spicy beef banh mi also very tasty, cooked with the spicy satay sauce. It's like shredded beef with the sauce loaded. it can bring on some heat however it's so delicious if you're into spicy and savory foods! Their baguette is so crunchy and just perfect size! Avocado shake was fresh and they also serve ice water if you didn't want to order drinks on the side A bit more pricey than other local Portland banh mi places however quality is legit worth it.

Yelp
76th has the absolute best one two punch of HOB and Bui Tofu right across the street (which is where I believe HOB gets their rolls as well as their tofu). Incredibly affordable, flavorful, and filling sandwiches, absolutely perfect for a quick takeaway lunch. The women behind the counter are lovely and gave me recommendations for my first visit. Oh and definitely don't sleep on their savory pastries! Can't wait to go back.

Yelp
Earlier in May 2024, my wife and I were hankering for something new to try since we are still new to the city, and stopped over at House of Bánh mì. For us it became one of those places where you can't stop thinking about how good the food was and you want to go back again. So, today we stopped back and took some sandwiches to go and basically I can confirm best Bánh mì ever! Bread is super fresh, good crunch, and a buttery crust. Fresh ingredients so you get everything that you are looking for, plus a bit of a kick with spice on some of the peppers and/or the sauce. Today, I got their onion tofu and paid the extra buck to add egg and I'm really happy that I did as you get a lot of egg too! Staff inside are super nice. When we were there a few weeks ago we mentioned it was our first visit and we were gifted some complimentary salad rolls which they totally didn't have to do, but was appreciated. The space itself is small, only a few tables, but very clean and comfortable. The only downside is that now when I've tried a Bánh mì from a restaurant closer to where I live, it just doesn't compare to the quality of this place, but that's minor compared to how good this place is. Definitely recommend coming here.

Yelp
I'm on the search for the best bánh mì in the Portland area and I think I'm coming real close to it. First of all, there's plenty of parking outside The House of Banh Mì. The person helping us was very kind and patient as we perused our options. We ended up ordering 3 dac biet sandwiches for takeout. I loved that they loaded up on the fillings. There are tons of veggies packed in, as well as meat. I wish there were more of the Vietnamese mayo as it was a bit dry. He did add in spring rolls, though, and that boosts this rating because the chả giò was exactly how my grandma makes them! Loved the filling and crispiness.

Yelp
A small cafe serving reasonably priced Bahn Mi with options for vegetarians. Great food for lunch and perfect for our small family of three on our way back to Salem from an out-of-state trip. The person who helped us at the register was very kind and went out of his way to be nice to our 5 year old who was very close to having a hangry meltdown after the long, hot drive. We had not heard of this place before but we felt very lucky to have found here it based on the Yelp posting. Sometimes the food options in Portland can be overwhelming but we are adding this place now to our go-to list for the next time we are in town!! Also, as a side note: they were out of the sesame balls but the person who served us said they would probably have some next door at the Bui Natural Tofu shop. They did have that and bunch of other Vietnamese snack foods. Another great place go! We will be back to both places soon. Highly recommend!

Yelp
I definitely think I found one of my favorite banh mi places in PDX. Everything was so good, filling, fresh, and flavorful. It definitely is a hole in a wall type of place. So whether you're sitting down real quick to chow it down or getting to go, this place was great. Service is quick and straightforward. I got the house special and I easily could have eaten two of them. Iced coffee is alright, but does the job if you're craving some!
google avatar

Maro S.

Yelp
Our favorite for fresh banh mi and pastries, plus the tastiest Vietnamese iced coffee! We haven't gone wrong with a sandwich yet, so I'm pretty sure they're all delicious.
google avatar

Helena L.

Yelp
Perfect sandwich shop. Exceptionally delicious. Prompt customer service. Definitely make it a to go order.
google avatar

Yelp
I have never been disappointed with the banh mi sandwiches here! My partner had a house special (variety of meats) and really liked it.
google avatar

Haeun J.

Yelp
If you're craving a banh mi, this is the spot to be. They offer a variety of meat options, as well as a few vegetarian options. I got the house special and my partner got the grilled pork. You can't go wrong with the house special that is full of fatty and lean textures, and sharp and earthy flavors. I personally found the grilled pork a little too salty - it almost tasted bitter because of how salty it was. The HOB is very generous with their pickled vegetables, and if you're not going to have the banh mi right away, I would suggest asking the veggies on the side!
google avatar

Ben P.

Yelp
Went here for the first time yesterday! It was great! Got a pork sandwich and it was yummy Spicy and the bread was fresh! My partner also loved her chicken sandwich! We are totally coming back! Friendly staff too!
google avatar

Yelp
Very good Bahn mi and good options! Mom and son place, must visit. Will be coming back
google avatar

Marianne V.

Yelp
Banh mi here was just ok. The service was on the other hand great and friendly. Price was mid. I was a little disappointed mainly because walking in you think it's one of those for sure 5/5 because the Banh mi was made in the same room by a little Vietnamese lady. But .... It was just ok. I might be a little biased and spoiled because I do live in an area where Asian food is abundance and very competitive. Parking is on the opposite side of the business.
google avatar

Vu N.

Yelp
Best Banh Mi in town. I've tried others like best baguette or even my other favorite lee's but nothing can compare. If you want a good Vietnamese Sandwich (Bánh Mi) come here and support this local spot.
google avatar

Joanne T.

Yelp
Fantastic banh mi and the bread is baked perfectly. The pork belly and dac biet were my favorite sandwiches. Service was friendly. More of a takeout place, but there are a few tables if you want to eat there.
google avatar

Dameon S.

Yelp
This place is great! So many delicious options to choose from and the kindness and attention to detail is superb. They packed my meal to go, but we planned to eat in the small establishment. When they recognized their mistake, they brought some complimentary egg rolls (which were delicious!) and apologized for the confusion. No problem at all! I'll be back, for sure!!
google avatar

Marvello V.

Yelp
This foodie joint is becoming one of my faves. Their House banh mi is legit and I recently tried their pork belly banh mi. What the?! Hecka good!!
google avatar

Yelp
We were driving through Portland on a road trip during lunch and felt like a Bahn Mi. Glad we stumbled upon this place! One of the best Bahn Mi's we've ever had! Service was great, the kid gave us some recommendations which were great! We had the grilled pork and the spicy beef Bahn Mi's. The spot is a little unsuspecting, kind of a hole in the wall. But definitely not disappointed, I'd definitely be back!

Adam C.

Yelp
Delicious Bahn mi! Definitely my go to spot for a Banh Mi sandwich. First place I tried in Portland after moving from New York and I highly reccomend!
google avatar

Richard F.

Yelp
Always on the hunt for a good banh mi and after at least half a dozen places, I think we found our spot! What we had: - 2 cokes - 2 grilled pork banh mi Pros: - limited menu which = few things done well! - that crunchy bread you expect - the right amount of spice and mayo - cold drinks - happy and attentive staff Cons: - Would like to see some outdoor seating - indoor seating looks like a hodgepodge of tables that don't belong together + a drill on the table Overall: Sometimes you just don't need to over complicate it. Do well what you're known for and that's it. Kudos!

Min Yi S.

Yelp
Today's House Special was terrible. I've been here a handful of times before and loved it. I used to love it so much, I'd tell everyone coming to Portland to get a sandwich here. I am now regretting that and would feel embarrassed if any of my friends do come. The meat was like dry turkey, the vegetables were barely marinated. My husband and I agree it was the worst Bahn Mi we've eaten in a decade or more.
google avatar

Roze N.

Yelp
Glad I finally had a chance to stop by here while making my tofu run nearby. Order up Banh Mi Dac Biet aka sammy w all the fixings. Sandwich was delish w good ratios of toppings. Although I love me a toasted baguette a minor thing would be bread was a bit too hard for me. My mouth rooftop might be more sensitive that way :P Anyhoots...it didn't stop me from polishing it off though. While waiting for food to be made, I noticed some burlap coffee beans bags on nearby tables...will have to def try some brew next time along w other banh mi flavors. Alsoooo...I was visually pleased at food presentation. Made it seem a bit more special and handled w care. Kudos.
google avatar

Mai G.

Yelp
Yummy. Tasty. Crispy. Perfect banh mi. Will definitely come back. Indoor seating is available. Service is fairly quick. It's a little hole in the wall. Nothing fancy.

T H.

Yelp
What happened? Is there a different owner now? I got 4 sandwiches this wknd and couldn't even swallow my 1st bite. The bread was so dry. It looked like a 5 yr old made them. Super disappointed!!
google avatar

Leelay L.

Yelp
The customer service was very excellent! But the sandwich was ok the pickle wasn't great wasnt sweet salty to sour just bland and the banh mi was ok no flavor much no Mayo so it was dry I guess I'm from Cali we have better food and way better banh mi but it was a good experience
google avatar

Randi J.

Yelp
YES YES YES!! So simple and so freakin good!! I've had the house, chicken, pork and pork belly banh mi and they are all delicious. The veggies are cold and crisp, the bread is perfect and warm and the protein is always delicious. They usually have yummy little buns and cookies sometimes too! A favorite spot for sure

Noah B.

Yelp
Delicious food and awesome service!! The server recommended the popular grilled pork banh mi and I loved it. Will definitely return to try the bbq pork :-)

Yelp
I rarely leave reviews, but this place left an impression on me; during my second visit today, I am still impressed with the consistency. I now KNOW this will be a regular stop while I call Oregon my home. A friend and I literally stumbled across this gem while house-hunting around Portland, Oregon back in June 2020. The building and the menu are similar: simple and small, with a "let-the-food-speak-for-itself" kinda vibe. Prices are fantastic compared to what you would normally pay in a restaurant and HOT DAMN THEY LOAD THESE THINGS WITH THE PICKLED, FLAVORFUL GARNISHES that most(if not all) places are usually stingy with. Ugh-SO GOOD! My wife and I ordered 3 different báhn mì because I told her, "I promise this place is off the chain. You will NOT REGRET spending your money here". Glad they didn't make me look like a fool lol Service is quick, friendly, and knowledgeable(if you're new they got all the recommendations). Bread is crisp, crunchy, fresh. Cilantro, pickled daikon and carrots galore! TASTY vegan options, too! We got the teriyaki tofu with spicy mayo...number 6, I believe. Another thing to note: they are a family-owned business and use their growing fame to help other local business/products get some exposure. We got these adorable Pokémon macaroons(hella delicious and usually I don't praise macaroons to the stars but gosh am I gonna order these again) from Buttersweet by M.T. There were some other things in there, like coffee and this aromatic Saigon's Organic Satay that my wife and I cannot wait to try! See you folks again soon!
google avatar

Yelp
Incredible! Best Bahn Mi I've ever had!!! I go here pretty often now, even though its nowhere near my house :) The food and the Thai iced tea is all soooooo good. I've ordered catering from them a couple times for my office as well and it's always a big hit.
google avatar

Monique F.

Yelp
Applause all around for the BEST Banh Mi spot in PDX!! 11/10 will always recommend this place! The bread + fillings are always fresh & it's a great value meal! If I have a bad day the teriyaki tofu + teriyaki chicken + an over-easy egg Banh Mi & a Taro Boba Tea get me through it & if I have a great day I celebrate with my favorite Banh Mi & Taro Boba Tea! The owners + workers are very friendly & kind, I love this spot with all of my heart!
google avatar

Min Yi S.

Yelp
Best banh mi I've had in a long time. What sets it apart is the fresh baked baguettes. Crispy, light, and warm. I wasn't hungry but I ended up eating the whole thing anyway.
google avatar

Analise S.

Yelp
By far the best Banh Mi we have had in Portland! Great and quick service. You have to try the #3 Pork Banh Mi, it is so delicious!!
google avatar

Colin D.

Yelp
I ordered a wonderful banh mi and several other specialty sides. The service was friendly and the food was delicious. Thanks

Yelp
I don't know what's going on with them, they have the best banh mi's ever but the last 3 times I've been here (during their business hours) they've been closed.

Yelp
Omg the worse baby mini ever had in my Life I feel driving back and get my money back . I know my banh minand what is should taste like it. I ordered the belly pork banh mi and inside it was. Super bad . The slice of meat were thick and hard to bite, I asked for no butter but there weren't any soy sauce or maybe it was just a sprinkle of it, the late speed was very tiny spot of not even spread thru the bread . Over. Bad experience. It was my first and last time there. Don't go there unless I want a nasty unflavored banh mi...blaahhhhhh

Robb C.

Yelp
Enjoyable little hole in the wall. Quality of food and service was very good and prices were cheap! I especially loved that crispy outside of the bread with a chewy inside. It's a key piece of a good Banh Mi. Nice job!
google avatar

Rossalyn O.

Yelp
One of my favorite places in Portland to get Banh Mi, and it's across the street from Bui's Tofu. Whenever I'm in the area, it's a 2 for 1 - getting two things I really enjoy! The House of Banh Mi is a cute shop with super friendly staff, and they work quick. You can easily get your order in a couple of minute and go. Due to COVID-19, they are only limiting 3 customers in the shop at a time. Phone Orders are recommended! I called in for an order, and my order was ready to go in 10 minutes with everything still warm and fresh. I ordered the #1 - House Special, and IT'S SO GOOD. Everything about the sandwich is perfect. The bread is light, yet being crispy and fluffy. The MAYO definitely ties the sandwich together, it's a bit salty with the right amount of creaminess and it isn't too heavy. The meats in the sandwich is so flavorful and tender, and you get a bunch of it in your sandwich. They ain't slacking with their meats. The pickled daikon and carrots adds sweetness and crunch. It wasn't over pickled either! The cucumber is a BIG THICK SLICE, and the cilantro and jalapeno didn't overpower the sandwich, but helped compliment the flavors! The PATE in this sandwich brought out the flavors of the sandwich, and honestly, I wish there was a little bit more smeared on my bread. The Cafe Sua Da (Vietnamese Iced Coffee) - Definitely pretty standard, and good. It wasn't as sweet as I would want it, but it is definitely strong. Another plus... Everything here is super affordable and isn't too expensive compared to other places! The menu is super easy to read, and you can easily choose something (compared to other places, where there is too many options)
google avatar

Bong J.

Yelp
Good banh mi. One of the spots that I would go to but there are other places to grab better banh mi, in my opinion.

Brooklyn W.

Yelp
i love house of bang mi!!! this place is a must try with sweet people and a dannnnnng good tofu banh mi - eat here!!!! I love the #5
google avatar

Devin H.

Yelp
This place is alright. I decided to try it since it's right down the street from the hospital. The Banh Mis were okay, but not the best I've ever had. I bought 2 thinking that they were $4.25 as described on their Yelp menu, but they were actually $7 each. The Thai tea was overly sweet to the point where I didn't even drink 1/4 of it. Also, the man at the register was very kind over the phone and in person however, after I paid, I was asked how much I wanted to tip (instead of IF I would like to tip), since the Square payment unit was behind a plastic barrier and in front of the cashier. I did not dine in, but I tipped anyways because I felt forced to. Overall, I don't think I will be back since I am not local to the area, but new customers should not be discouraged to try this place.
google avatar

Jason C.

Yelp
I've been wanting to try this place for a while. I got the House Special, and it was pretty good. Everything tasted very fresh and was perfectly composed into the banh mi. It was actually quite sizable. If I had something I would change, I would have liked just a smidge more of the pickles and jalapeños and a slightly crisper crust to the bread. Overall, it was super tasty and clearly high quality.
google avatar

Avalynda B.

Yelp
The bahn mi is so good here! I also got a Thai tea that was absolutely amazing. Highly recommend!

Yelp
I'm glad I gave this place another try. Apparently, there are new owners since I last tried it and it was change for the better! Service is quick and friendly. Every banh mi I've tried has been good. My favorite banh mi is banh mi xiu mai (meatball) and this place delivers. The meatballs are moist and flavorful. I snuck bites from my mom's banh mi dac biet (special) and sister's banh mi bo nuong (spicy beef). All were delicious AND they do not skimp on the meat. Every sandwich is FILLED with meat. Their pickled veggies are heavy on the carrots, I prefer more radish in the mix. They're crispy and add a sour bite, so it does it's job. The bread is crispy on the outside and soft/fluffy on the inside. No issues with the bread cutting the heck out of your gums. Their pandan waffle is inconsistent, but when it's good, it's really good. There are times where there is coconut in it which is bueno, when there is no coconut I'm sad. Sometimes it's over cooked and burnt. You never know what you're gonna get, but I still get it.. living life on the edge.

Chee K.

Yelp
This is really good banh mi. My litmus test is the banh mi from An Xuyen which is quite a drive from my house. The bread is larger and they are more generous with their filling with their meats. Where they kind of fall short is their veggies, not as pickled or tasty. They get more points for awesome friendly service and telling you about how long your sandwich will take. There were several other offering beside many types of delicious banh mis. There are some spring rolls which were quite tasty. The sauce is a bit peanut buttery for me. This place is a definite repeat. Grab a tasty sandwich. The service is friendly and the place is clean and bright!

Yelp
We had the fried onion tofu bahn-mi and the teriyaki tofu bahn-mi, both which were excellent. This off the beaten path shop is well-priced, fast, and delicious. The staff was also very friendly. There is no seating inside or outside, but otherwise everything is great!
