"The Hummingbird is quirky. This casual Peruvian-Japanese ceviche bar along Alvarado has corkboard ceilings and love notes scribbled on its pink-lit subway tile walls. A piano and mic in the back are put to use by random diners. But just when you think you’ve got this scrappy art-house operation pegged, the most beautiful yellowtail sashimi you've ever seen lands in front of you. Created by the chef behind splashy restaurants like Rosaline and Causita, the Nikkei-influenced dishes here look and taste like fine dining without the upcharge (most dishes are under $20). "This scrappy cevichería looks like a fun art project titled “restaurant.” It also serves fine dining-level seafood. When we plopped down on a rickety neon stool and a beautiful plate of ceviche landed in front of us. A couple of handrolls, yellowtail tostada, salmon tiradito, and shrimp ceviche dumplings. Order the ribeye with fried flatbread to share. Finish with the picarones. "Announced by chef Ricardo Zarate, I learned that The Hummingbird will be a new Peruvian ceviche restaurant located at the corner of Berkeley and Glendale Boulevard in Echo Park; details remain thin, but local food writer Pat Saperstein photographed the exterior, and Zarate’s previous project, Causita in Silver Lake, had been open for 10 months before closing in February 2023." - Matthew Kang
