"Located on the road to the ever-popular Whiteface Ski Resort, the Hungry Trout Resort sits on the banks of the trout-filled Ausable River and features two dining options. Hungry Trout Restaurant stays true to its name — trout is always on the menu, in the form of a smoked trout with horseradish aioli appetizer or one of five trout entree options (trout with lemon-caper butter, Campfire Trout with house smoked bacon, and Trout Grand Marnier are all options on the current summer menu). For the fish-averse diner, the menu also includes burgers, steaks, and pasta. Fans of game meat will look to the venison-and-boar stuffed mushrooms or the free range venison rib chops. A more casual meal of sandwiches, burgers, and pub fare can be had at the R. F. McDougall’s Pub, named one of “America’s Top 10 Fishing Bars” by Outdoor Life magazine." - Matthew Lardie

Where should I start... the entire place is dated, like it's falling apart, however this is not an excuse for the the incredible lack of cleanliness, mess both outside and in the room, sticky chairs and table, broken window blinds, very dirty windows and full of crushed insects, a lot of mold in the bathroom, thick dust everywhere on the lamps or sconces. There were plenty of spider webs between the beds and the bedside table... I don't even want to think if the sheets have been changed or not. I stayed for a few days and although the pool was functional, it was always closed. About the the wifi and the parking, you have to figure it out by yourself... self check in and self check out. I can't understand why there are so many good reviews when the whole place is a disaster, very expensive for what it offers. The restaurant is closed Monday and Tuesday, so I have no idea how it is, however from the outside it kept the same looks as the motel. To add something good about it, the location was good and the views in the area magnificent. I will definitely avoid that place in the future and I don't recommend it.

Not an easy property to review. I want to be fair to management, but also to potential travelers and this is such a mixed bag. |As to the hotel room itself, it is very tired but also very clean. The floor and bed both creak with seemingly with any movement, and everything in the room shouts that the property is dated and past its prime. However, cleanliness is definitely a big deal for many of us, and the resort scores well on that front. Additionally, the rooms back up to beautiful mountain views, and a stream also runs along the back of the property.|There is a recently-renamed tavern on property, but we were told just before our arrival date that, during our stay, it would not be open, due to staff shortages. |The more formal dining area, however, was open for business. We did not eat there. However, the one thing we will always remember about this resort is the unbelievable bar area adjacent to the formal dining room. I’m absolutely serious when I say that it is one of the coziest, most quintessential North Woods/Adirondack venues you will ever see. With a big stone fireplace, big leather chairs, and the obligatory trout fishing memorabilia, it is out of a movie. Service was quick and friendly too.|In short, the rooms are tired and there are staff shortages, but that amazing bar and overall cleanliness merit a solid score.

Google
DO NOT RECOMMEND!! The bathroom was filled with mold and all the electronics look like they were bought at a garage sale for 5$. There were alot of spiderwebs all over the place and huge amounts of dust everywhere. This place is also cramped up. The wallpaper on the walls look like they haven’t been changed since the 1990’s.

Just stayed here with my teens, and had a great time! An older motel with a cabin-like feel, right along the river, and close to attractions. I really enjoyed the personal touch in the older motel style rooms: tan sheets, cool platform beds, games in the office, lights outside. Comfy safe setting, very nice people on the property. Thank you!

My wife and I stayed here several yrs ago for a weekend. I was going to do some fishing and she was happy to sit by the pool. This place could be spectacular with the location on the river. The meal we had was disappointing. But the biggest problem was the terrible mold smell in the room. It was unbearable. I would never stay at this place again even for free. It's a shame. This place could be a gold mine.

My dad "found" Hungry Trout abt 20y ago when he took my older boys fishing. We had stayed there many times. Now we're back! The property is so pretty and peaceful! The restaurants are delicious and so convenient to be on the property. Can't wait to go back!

My sister and I were on a vacation in the Adirondack region and met Kasey, the Hungry Trout bartender/server at another restaurant in Plattsburgh, New York. I asked her what she did and she told me and my sister about the Hungry Trout Restaurant in Wilmington,NY. Kasey talked so highly about the place she worked and the amazing new owners and she really loved it there. So we decided to go see her when they opened on Friday night . When we arrived we went to the Tavern/Pub which is located downstairs of the restaurant. It was kinda hard to find the door for the lower area, we Witnesses Kasey running outside the doors to wrangle the patrons into the correct location. This happened 3X while we were there. She is an absolute joy and a great conversationalist, has great knowledge of the food and beverages served at the restaurants. The pub food that we selected was absolutely delicious. I give Hu get Trout 5 stars and if I could give Kasey a 10 STAR rating I would. She is the reason I went there and I will be sure to return when we come back to the area.

Went in for dinner with my family. I had trout, and red wine for my meal, and the appetizer with shrimp and lobster. Food was amazing. Service was somewhat fast. The location of this place is in the middle of nowhere, so 2 stars on location.

Yelp
Skiing Whiteface and Gore at the end of the season this was as convenient as it gets being 3 minutes down the street, room was very nice and cozy I slept like a rock after skiing for the day My only minor complaint was the check in process I had driven 6 1/2 hours and skied another 7 hours and I was EXHAUSTED! I walked into to the front desk building and was so tired that I didn't see that TV above the customer service desk with the self check in instructions, and I stood there for solid 15 minutes waiting for a employee to comeback and check me in and eventually noticed the TV instructions oops....... Oh well

Yelp
My wife and I celebrated our 5th anniversary high peak hiking. We loved this spot. Great food. And bonfire with wine after. Beautiful! Will do it again.

Yelp
Excellent postcard-type views from the outdoor deck and the Campfire Trout was very tasty!

Yelp
Six stars if that were possible! A nicely updated motel, very comfortable, situated right on a branch of the Ausable River. Sometimes these older motels, quaint as they are, are a little outdated, but to us it seems like the rooms were updated "just enough" to be comfortable by modern standards, yet evoke a bygone time. You can sleep with the windows open on the river side, weather permitting, for a soothing river sound to lull you to sleep. Friend staff, what more could you ask?

Yelp
This place is a dump. Have not seen one person/employee. Nothing works well. Examples include: beds made with flat sheets that come apart when you pull back the covers, shower with water pressure that could best be described as dripping, window shades with broken/bent slats and adjusting rods laying on the floor, power outlets on the bedside table that don't work, etc. I feel sad just staying here. Poorly managed. Skip it!

Yelp
Loved our dinner here. It was my best meal in the lake placid area. We sat outside looking at the gorgeous fall foliage and the river. Couldn't have been prettier. Great food and friendly service

Yelp
We reserved a wrong date. Mr. Matthew offered us to stay at his Air Bnb with same premium we paid. His newly renovated house with larger rooms and privately furnished was even betterto stay with my boy.. It was his mercy and warm hearts for us at chilly cold early fall 2022. We stayed warmer and charmingly at his private house. Thank you so much Matthew! Without your help, we could be stay outside for a night with baby boy. I highly recommend his Air Bnb and his Hungry Trout Resort to anyone traveling near by. Again, thank you Matthew!!

Yelp
I booked a reservation for this resort after both the Book Now via the resort website as well as Expedia reflected a rate of $197 per night for my travel dates while it was clear on expedia that a deposit was required and it seems as though the Book Now resort function required full payment for the two bedroom kitchenette room. So I booked through expedia and the manager Matt called me a few hours later to state that they NEVER offered that rate which was in fact not true as the rate was listed at the time I booked my trip - however - the resort was smart and prior to making this phone to call they seemed to have changed their website to reflect a rate of $289 per night for the time period I had booked which also propagated to the expedia page for the same room. Pretty deceitful in my opinion. After attempting to reason with Matt that it is not my fault that THEIR website had the rate listed which they state is incorrect and I was able to book that rate, he stated that he would not honor that rate. He also tried to blame expedia for the incorrect rate which wasn't right as I had viewed the SAME rate on the Hungry Trout website AND expedia at the time I booked. He stated he had other rooms at a lower rate that he could switch me to, well that wasn't the room I booked now was it? I booked the kitchenette room for a reason. In what world can you just decide you are changing the rate AFTER a customer had already locked in a reservation? What kind of customer service is this? I requested for him to have the person above him call me before canceling. He canceled our reservation within a minute of our phone call and I still have yet to receive a call from his higher up. I find this extremely poor customer service.

Yelp
This restaurant is under new management so I can not say anything about it as I have not eaten there since the management change. With the prior management it was the best fancy and expensive restaurant in the area and great food and service. The venison adt trout dishes were great

Yelp
Very happy to have secured a room here last minute. Jerry and the front desk staff were super-friendly and accommodated us for a late-night arrival. Our room was very clean (with a 3-day rotation to make sure it was thoroughly aired-out...much appreciated as this was our first outing during the pandemic), comfortable bed, nice shower. And fabulous location right near Whiteface Mtn. Will recommend to our friends!

Yelp
Another one of my favorite spots for a "fish-cation". An excellent "base of operations" for every season - I've been here in Winter, Spring, Summer and Fall. Extremely comfortable and well appointed accommodations and, considering the area, at a fair and reasonable price. The owners and staff are beyond helpful. The property and facilities are very well maintained, as are the rooms, which are also immaculately clean. Stayed in a spacious King Deluxe in their middle wing which has been recently updated. Almost every room has a back picture window view of Whiteface Mountain. All the amenities one would expect of the larger chain hotels in the Lake Placid area, but 1) at a fraction of the cost, 2) from a family owned and operated establishment and 3) only 15 minutes from Lake Placid. A perfect year-round getaway I highly recommend.

Yelp
I lodged at the Hungry Trout on Friday, June 15, 2018. The room was clean and moderately priced and perfect for our hiking trip planned for the next day. In addition, they have an on premise restaurant and bar that is perfect for the hiker/fisherman/outdoor type. John the bartender was hysterical with his tales from the northern Adirondacks. If I need a place to stay in the Lake Placid/Wilmington area, this place will be high on the list.

Yelp
We stayed in a single king room, which was clean and everything functional. At check-in, we had to report to the restaurant next door, but that was no big deal. We came to fish and to enjoy the outdoors, and it was spectacular. The river is beautiful, it's right out the back door, and it's not crowded. The folks at the fly shop were very helpful and generous with their local knowledge and advice. The grounds were clean and well maintained. While we didn't use the pool, it looked clean and well maintained. If you're looking for a hotel room to hole-up for a day or two and not leave the room, you'll probably find these rooms a bit pedestrian. If you're coming here to enjoy the outdoors you'll be very happy. The restaurant next door was very nice. We enjoyed three consecutive dinners there, and it's only a stone's throw from the hotel. We'll be back.

Yelp
We got here around six and the office was closed so we had to check in at the restaurant. Sadly we decided to eat there.. (It was horrible see my review under the restaurant review) After eating we go to our room and it smelt like mold or mildew or something terrible and a power outage blew out the tv in our room so i had to get the bartender to come so he could help me search thru 5 or 6 rooms to find one that was clean and had a working tv. The room we ended up in didn't smell as bad as the first one but sadly was as small and out dated as the first one.. The beds were uncomfortable and paper thin and the sheets were the worst quality possible. It was cheap and the staff was nice so i guess that gets a star...

Yelp
Great Place.....Tricia the waitress was the GREATEST......food was the best. Perfect dining experience.
