The Best Ice Cream in Boston | Eater Boston

"This list is stacked with ice cream legends, but the elder statesman of the group is the nearly 50-year-old Ice Creamsmith in Dorchester’s Lower Mills. It’s easy to go all out here with a dizzying array of candies to mix into flavors like mocha and coconut almond swirl, and squiggles of hot fudge and caramel over top, but for first-timers, start with the ultimate classic: A simple sweet cream scoop that the shop has been perfecting for decades." - Tanya Edwards

Best Desserts in Dorchester | Eater Boston

"This Lower Mills ice cream parlor features house-made ice creams, frappes, cakes, and classic banana splits. The 10 regular flavors — from vanilla to frozen pudding with a rum base, raisins, and fruit — join seasonal offerings like the current peppermint stick, pumpkin, and egg nog. Or order up an ice cream pizza, which boasts a brownie “crust” topped with vanilla ice cream, candies, cookie bits, and chocolate syrup. The Ice Creamsmith is open for takeout and online orders from its website." - Nathan Tavares

The Ice Creamsmith - Review - Dorchester - Boston - The Infatuation

"We’re big fans of the old-school signage at this Lower Mills ice cream spot, as well as the absurdly large scoops they serve. The texture and consistency of the ice cream is some of the best in the city, which may or may not be related to the rapid speed of “production to scoop” that the shop advertises. There’s also ice cream pizza available, in case you’ve grown tired of margherita." - Joel Ang

Google
Best homemade ice cream ever. They are located near the chocolate factory on Dorchester Avenue. Absolutely love their vegan ice cream. They make a new flavor about every week and a half. Lots of dairy flavors with all the candy sides! It’s a very small establishment best for parties of two or three people. sometimes I take my ice cream and sit outside on the bench that they have there.

Google
Great ice cream shop. Good service, very fresh batches! They mix ins toppings for you so they don’t just sit on top. Their regular flavors, monthly flavors, and one batch Wednesday flavors are always so good!! Had to stock up on this one batch horchata flavor, it was amazing!

Google
Always a fun selection of flavors and family owned and operated! They give back to the local community throughout the year. We love teaming up with them for our summertime Cavity Free Club! 🦷 🍦 They’re like the Mike’s Pastry of Lower Mills! Open late in the summer perfect for a dessert after dinner!

When I first went to this place, the air and feeling of this place was nice. Its small but is still a great place to hangout with a friend or two for ice cream. Surprisingly, it was a bit crowded when I got there at around 8 pm. The staff working there was very fast and efficient at their job. They were also nice too. I got sweet cream with Reese's mix ins and it was SO good. You could chose any mix ins you want in the list as well which is pretty cool. The texture and taste of the ice cream was delicious and the Reese's added a great touch of flavor. It just left me wanting more even though I already had a good amount of ice cream. I really recommend coming here for some excellent ice cream with a fair price!

Google
Depends on what matters to you… Ice Cream. 4* …….if you’re willing to pay the high price. Customer Service. 0* …..one girl specifically. However some are nice, respectful, and polite. (I’m old school with no tolerance for very poor customer service.) Pricing 0*. Be wary Every time i have gone- over a dozen + this year ( a lot bc my husband likes this ice cream), we get the same order (2 large with mixings side cone (pricing is always diff between $1-$2). Tonight was $20 and change. Question to owner, if customer waits up to 30mins for an order- most of which invlove mixins, why ex are jimmies ‘not allowed’ to be mixed in- Absurd! Ive ordered and recvd them mixed in multiple times. And several times recently Ive been told it is not allowed Bottom Line. Customer service is more important than the ice cream here, because Brighams and Tillamook in your local grocery store are equally as good. Small business owner supporter- as long the service is appropriate. Ill spend my money elsewhere moving forward.

Google
Delicious treat to cap off a Sunday afternoon! The young person was made aware of one of my nieces nut allergy- went above and beyond with safety measures so she could enjoy her ice cream and gummy bears on the side. Service impeccable and on par with the amazing ice cream! Thank you for serving our community!

Google
I love places like this. The Ice Creamsmith has clearly been an institution for longer than I have been alive, with pictures and news clippings decorating the walls from long before I was born. Their ice cream is all made in house, which we sampled pure to check its quality before ordering. I am a big fan any time the staff gets to share their favorites, so I had to get one of those reccomendations. It just so happened that after picking Eric's reccomended vanilla malt milkshake that we found out Eric himself would be the one to make it for us. I can confidently say the milkshake was delicious, and that I only wished that I had had more to drink of it despite its large size (this is more of a testament to how good it was). I think this is the kind of locally owned place with high quality product and enthusiastic staff that is worth going out of your way to visit.

Google
Best ice cream in Boston! They have amazing seasonal flavors. I love the coconut pineapple. My kids love the pumpkin flavor that comes out in the fall. All locally made and great service. Check it out if you’re ever in Lower Mills during the Spring, Summer or Fall (They’re closed in Winter). Also, they take cash or cards now!

Yelp
The Ice Creamsmith is one of the local ice cream shops around. It is located on Dot Ave, in the Lower Mills area. I usually visit at least once every summer, after going to the gym or eating at one of the restaurants nearby. Strawberry ice cream is typically my go-to whenever I get ice cream & theirs does not disappoint. They serve pretty simple ice cream here, but tasty! I always get rainbow sprinkles with it (yes, I still get rainbow sprinkles lol) !! Staff is always kind and relatively quick service. They get you in and out. In the summer time, you can see people getting an ice cream and chat outside. Very chill. There's free street parking right outside, on both sides of the street. NOTE: the area does get busy & parking spots do get snatched up quick! Anyways, you must visit if you're in the area and craving ice cream ;)

Yelp
Absolutely loved the mocha and fudge brownie ice cream! Great selection of ice cream flavors, friendly service, and classic atmosphere with fun comics from the funny pages. A great treat in the Summer!

Yelp
Just the perfect little local ice cream shop with all the charm and delicious homemade ice cream. The lemon custard was just perfection - creamy, lemony, rich, and not overly sweet. The serving sizes were decent for the price you pay. Going inside feels like stepping back into a Time Machine (in a good The kids running the counter were friendly and helpful. There are two small tables inside and a bench outside for seating. I typically don't find street parking hard to come by but you can always go down and park by the CVS if needed.

Yelp
Wifey has been wanting to take me to this old school ice cream shop because they are supposed to have bomb strawberry ice cream. It was good, but I think I prefer haagen daz because it doesn't have chunks of strawberries. It was solid but wifey overhyped it. My bro in law got the birthday cake ice cream. It was filled with chunks of cake and the best way to describe it was he inhaled it. It was one of the best ice creams he's had in a while. I'll come again and go for the blueberry since that seems very popular. The small ice cream is plenty of ice cream unless you want to have ice cream as a meal.
google avatar

Monica L.

Yelp
really really loved this place!! everything about it was so good the front of the shop gives a classic old vibe and the inside is small but feels quaintly cute the people working there was also super friendly, funny, and conversational and enthusiastically gave flavor recommendations and samples and finally, the ice cream itself was also soo amazing, I would go back so often if it weren't so far away. I got blueberry, strawberry, and banana, and the flavors were so fresh and refreshing. you could taste that it was made with actual fruit!! and honestly didn't expect it but the banana was my favorite flavor (the employee recc'ed it so I had to trust) solid portion and reasonable price highly highly recommend!

Yelp
Fantastic ice cream. The oatmeal raisin cookie will now require a regular March pilgrimage as it's one of the special flavors that month. This ice cream is smooth and flavorful. Mix'ins are an option. The kidde cup is substantial. If you want a treat head over now
google avatar

Yelp
We had a nostalgic time at the Ice Creamsmith, perusing the newspaper clipping and pictures, while reminiscing about our many visits over the years with family and friends. Service was friendly and efficient. The homemade ice cream is still all made in-house. The delicious creamy Maple Walnut did not disappoint. I almost took away a star because the Coffee Frozen Yogurt had too many ice crystals but instead will recommend you stick with the ice cream rather than the froyo. Try the Fresh Cream ice cream; it's the best with or without mix-ins.
google avatar

Laura P.

Yelp
The ice cream here is so delicious! Although there may be a small selection, anything you choose will be amazing. I love coming every month and stocking up on their new specials. Helpful, patient and kind workers as well!

Yelp
This little ice cream shop offers handmade hard ice cream. It's been around for decades and I'm happy to report that it has really kept up with the times. Did I mention that this ice cream is produced right in house? By some folks I know down the street? Can't get much more local than this. Favorite up-to-date features: + credit cards accepted + To Go containers and utensils are compostable + Homemade ice cream pies, cakes, cookies + Snacks for your pup + Sugar cones and waffle cones + Monthly specials which can be ordered by the quart (you can even get on the month-by-month club where you pre order quarts of their three monthly specials for a fixed fee for pickup) + One day Wednesday specials where fun flavors go for a spin And I stand by the flavor. Vanilla is perfection. Lemon custard is soo good (but only available occasionally). You can follow for the latest news on Facebook.

Yelp
this shop is the best for ice cream near Milton , Chris the owner is very professional and helpful with anything you need, ask him flavors or toppings he is very accommodating, he donates a lot to the community whether it's farmers market, community socials, back to school or just movie nights he is willing to participate, we appreciate his community involvement , his staff is the best stop by and see for yourself.

Yelp
Exceptionally delicious ice cream. Long time family owned business. Favorite flavors: coffee and maple walnut. They still do "mix-ins" just like at Steve's in the 1980s. All our family members have cool Ice Cream Smith t-shirts and get lots of comments on them (even the one who lives in Brazil!) Support small! Shop local!

Yelp
Get the cake batter ice cream with marshmallow topping! It's sure to satisfy any sweet tooth! Best cake batter ice cream I've ever had.

Yelp
I first came here years ago when I was in middle school but only recently rediscovered this spot. It's antiquated and the decor doesn't scream contemporary. I'm sure nothing has changed since my first visit. I went for the sweet cream and s'mores flavors. I like to test an ice cream place by their simple flavor and sweet cream is the simplest one of all. The sweet cream is rich and has a nice amount of sugar that doesn't make it cloy. The balance of cream and sugar were right. The s'mores flavor is good, in that it wasn't overwhelmingly s'mores components but the graham cracker and chocolate wasn't sparse. I don't do a lot of mix-ins, so not having every imaginable mix-in conceived doesn't kill me. The price is a little higher but tolerable. Service was friendly and patient.

Yelp
As a woman of color and a lifetime resident of Dorchester, I have visited this establishment several times over the years and each and every time I've felt rushed and disregarded as a customer. I understand people have bad days, but each and every time I visited this establishment, I was met with blantant disregard and other people of non-color were welcomed and met with a smile, patience and niceties. Now after having read all of the reviews here, I see a few other people of color have experienced what I've gone thru, and I know its not in my head about the racism I've experienced. I'll keep my money and patronize an establishment that respects ALL of their customers. Bye, Ice Creamsmith! SMH

Yelp
My family have been customers of The Ice Creamsmith for almost 2 decades. We love that there is a new flavor every season and there is a good amount of milk fat in their ice cream. The portion sizes are generous. The small is an adult serving size. The Ice Creamsmith is the best value for your ice cream shop dollar in Dorchester. Speaking of dollars, be sure to bring cash. They are cash only.

Shane C.

Yelp
This ice cream place is terrible my throat hurts now and the guy got my order wrong 3 times and we told the guy to take off whip cream that we never asked for and he wash it off with water and right when we walked out it was leaking (terrible cups) and they have no options we asked for mint and cookie dough and there is none. There is only one worker and he was dropping everything multiple times on the floor. The owner has no personality and this place is extremely expensive. THIS PLACE SUCKS DO NOT GO HERE.

Jane R.

Yelp
Friendly staff, delicious flavors, and a perfect fun outing for the family. Stock up on peppermint stick before Thursday!!
google avatar

Herr K.

Yelp
We picked up a number of quarts, curbside pickup. Worked well and efficiently. Flavors were very good. I loved the strawberry; delicate and authentic. Chocolate was good. Chocolate chip, good. Banana was exceptional! My family raves about this place. Good to see homemade in a local setting. Support them!
google avatar

Sam D.

Yelp
The ice cream is homemade and pretty good. The prices have slowly gone up over the years. We got strawberry ice cream and it has actual strawberries. It's a small location with about 3 tables and an outside bench.
google avatar

David F.

Yelp
Great ice cream. The business was very timely even though there were so many customers. I was very impressed. There's hot fudge is so good.
google avatar

Vivian C.

Yelp
This is a small family run ice cream parlor decorated with framed ice cream themed Sunday comics on either side. They have 4 round tables set with 3 chairs apiece for dining in, and a nice bench right outside. Their ice cream is served in a cup or a cone in 3 sizes - junior (3 oz) $2.38, small (5 oz) $3.74 and large (8 oz) $5. Yep, this isn't one of those spots that give you these giant servings that you can share if you are so inclined - these are portioned more for the normal person's appetite. I was able to get my small cup in two flavors - peach and banana for me! Both were nice and smooth and fruit flavorful. Mmmmm. Add a cookie or brownie for 0.98 and I'm set! Cash only, but they definitely don't hide this fact, so don't say you weren't warned.
google avatar

Arnold H.

Yelp
Solid. Strawberry didn't taste great. Vanilla was decent. The baby size is plenty. Somewhere between a 3 and 4.
google avatar

Sharon V.

Yelp
Nothing is sweeter than old fashioned ice cream date. I came here with a special friend and he introduced me to this amazing lil ice cream shoppe. Located near the Lower Mills section of Milton and Dorchester I truly enjoyed this yummy ice cream experience. They have tons of flavors and frappes. They are cash only though. If you go at the right time you can find street parking. I just found my new summah guilty pleasure.
google avatar

Garrett Y.

Yelp
Good, decent homemade ice cream. I think the prices are a tad on the high side ($4.70 for a small, $2.90 for a junior). There always seems to be a line. There is only street parking available, but is easy to get to if you live in the neighborhood.
google avatar

Jen H.

Yelp
The Ice Creamsmith is a super cute old school ice cream shop. They make their own ice cream and it's perfect for a warm day! There's not a lot of seating so I would assume most people take their cool treats to go. Today, Wednesday, they were open until 10pm. That is something I will keep in mind as soon as it gets warm outside if the mood for ice cream strikes me. At $3.75 for a small cup (one good sized scoop) this place will be a special treat (since you can get a whole container of ice cream at the store for $2.50) but with flavors like Maple Walnut, and an outing with a friend... totally worth it. Oh, please note... CASH ONLY!
google avatar

Marlana Y.

Yelp
When you first step in, your back in the 70s with so many newspaper clippings and cartoon strips on the walls. Its nice to have a ice cream shop in the area that offers many homemade ice cream flavors and various toppings. The pricing is a bit steep but its expected since its a family business and homemade. I got the raspberry ice cream and it was soo red and yummy! I loved it. Would def be bad to try other flavors! CASH ONLY!!!!
google avatar

Jessie L.

Yelp
Friendly staff, family run, old school homemade ice cream. They have around 12 flavors and lots of mix ins. I got raspberry chip and maple walnut in cone but it seemed like a lot of people were getting sundaes. It's about $9ish for 2 small cones, I thought the portions were generous. I wouldn't come here expecting a bunch of different, funky flavors but I would come here with the expectation that you'll get a delicious taste of the classics. CASH ONLY!! Open March 1st to Thanksgiving!
google avatar

Kelley C.

Yelp
Portions are huge, but also priced that way. My significant other and I were able to share a decently tasty banana split for a little over $11. Ice cream is okay, good (I mean, it's ice cream) but not knock your socks off and not screaming homemade. The toppings, like the caramel, are fresh and amazingly tasty, though.
google avatar

Kim P.

Yelp
Perhaps I'm an ice cream purist, but I prefer sweet cream year 'round, and Peppermint Stick around the holidays. The Ice Cream Smith rocks for Sweet Cream--better than JP Licks, for sure. BUT, for the peppermint stick? I have the expectation that I'll actually see small chunks of peppermint, right? Wrong. The Ice Cream Smith's seasonal peppermint stick ice cream had nothing crunchy in it at all, and I was truly disappointed, particularly since I look forward to peppermint stick all year. The best, for me, is Brigham's Peppermint Stick. That's the standard. However, if you want some good ice cream, stick with the classic sweet cream--no add-ins needed. It's golden on its own.
google avatar

Michelle M.

Yelp
My favorite ice cream of all time. I have been going here since they opened, when I was 1, over 40 years ago. They are a family owned ice cream shop. The owner's are the prior owner's child. This is homemade ice cream. I have never had such smooth ice cream. I have moved throughout my life and still manage to visit for an ice cream. I currently live in Brockton and plan to go tonight. This is a must visit ice cream place. Only issue, street parking is scarce.
google avatar

LauRen B.

Yelp
Try the rotating monthly flavors. Peach is very good. March 2012~ mint chip delicious Go here as much as you can, amazing Only 3 stars because I think it's a bit pricey
google avatar

EM S.

Yelp
Every time I come to visit Boston we always stop at this ice cream shop. The cream is made from scratch and tastes great. I get the cookies and cream with chocolate jimmies and hot fudge! It's a cash only spot so if you miss the sign on the door they do have an ATM.
google avatar

Meg B.

Yelp
This is some of the best ice cream you'll ever have. It's fresh and creamy, and unless you simply must have 31 flavors and 100 mix in options, you're going to love it. Service is always reasonably friendly and efficient and the dining area is only sticky on the busiest of summer evenings. Some may consider it pricy, but it's effectively top shelf ice cream. Take all of my money, Ice Creamsmith. I don't care.
google avatar

Michael M.

Yelp
A taste of summer is what one will find at the Ice Cream Smith. Tonight I had the large hot fudge sundae with chocolate ice cream. The ice cream is always so fresh and delicous. Along with the whip cream. If we could only get them to add steam hot dogs.
google avatar

Molly S.

Yelp
Not only am I spoiled by Toscanini's and Christina's, but I'm demanding too. WHAT? You don't have SAFFRON flavored ice cream? Pass. I've never seen any flavors here that go above and beyond. And the second star is for the less than friendly staff. Maybe I caught someone on an off night... but there were about 3-4 people behind the counter, and not a single one of them made me feel welcome, or that my business was appreciated. And I didn't even rank on the flavor selection!
google avatar

Izzy M.

Yelp
The ice cream here is good. Not spectacular, not superb...just good. The 2 star service is for the service--these pople are frikkin rude. I have no clue what the guy's deal is. I've been there 3 times total in my whole life and each time he has been cold and snappy. You'd think this dude used to work for Lehman Brothers or something. Sheesh show some civilty...youre serving icecream afterall! Oh and another thing...they dont accept debit cards!! What is this?? the Ukraine??
google avatar

Sara D.

Yelp
I have to start by saying that I visited this place a few times. I always hear stories about how good the ice cream is. I thought the ice cream and the frozen yogurt were just "okay." Also, when I look at the menu and toppings, there never seem to be enough options. I paid about $7.00 for a banana split once, and it was more than the cost of a cheap lunch, and it was not even that good. Further, I agree with another reviewer, that the staff are never as friendly as they should be. Each time I walk in, there is no one else in there, and I get the feeling that I am interrupting something. The place is also very, very small. Personally, I prefer soft serve ice cream anyway, but this place did not live up to the hype. They will only benefit by being one of the few ice cream places in the area. The people I hear raving about this place are Dorchester or former Dorchester area residents. I do not recommend anyone go out of their way to try this place, but if you are in the area, I recommend you try the place once to form your own opinion about it. Keep in mind that parking is limited too.
google avatar

Cherie C.

Yelp
Good homemade ice cream. Banana ice cream, one of my favorites, is a regular flavor. I ordered a small, thinking maybe I should get more since it was a hot day and I really wanted ice cream. But the small was pretty darn big. It wasn't cheap ($4.50 with a waffle cone), but I got about 3x as much ice cream as I would have for the same price at Emack and Bolio's so I didn't feel gouged. It was more than enough ice cream for one person. The banana ice cream tasted like it was made with banana, not banana flavor or syrup (something I cannot tolerate). I'll admit is was not as fresh-banana-tasting as it's ridiculously priced competition, but it was still pretty good ice cream. Make sure you bring cash; it's cash-only.
google avatar

A M.

Yelp
I decided to save up for a rainy (or sunny?) day and head to this cute little ice cream shop with my favorite guy. What met us was creamy, vanilla-flavored disappointment. Not only were we unfamiliar with how to order, we didn't know exactly what we wanted. We were snapped at and then asked to repeat our order three times, which the person behind the counter still got wrong (we ate it anyway). We walked out pretty dejected that we were tossed around like we were until we realized that it was almost closing time and they were most likely rushing us (and the group behind us) out as quickly as they could. I will say the ice cream was great, but I doubt we'll return for it any time soon.
google avatar

Owen D.

Yelp
Best ice cream around. Local place in a great location. Grew up eating this ice cream. Classic flavors with mix-ins lead to hundreds of options. Seasonal flavors are always a hit. Try Dot Dirt during the summer, best flavor by far.
google avatar

Walker H.

Yelp
The ice cream's okay as long as you stick to standards. They had a "seasonal" peach when I went there last month, but I get the feeling they're not even trying. It tasted like it was made using a white ten-gallon bucket of peach "syrup". I've made homemade peach ice cream and that was not it. Also, for how pricey it is, it's not at all what I would expect for the dollar.
google avatar

Charmie C.

Yelp
I love the small-town charm of this place. The homemade ice cream is cheap and really good. Not a ton of toppings, but just enough to please my sweet tooth. Cash only though, so be prepared for that. The indoor space isn't too large, so it's best to take your treat to go.
google avatar

Chris C.

Yelp
Quality ice cream made on site, salt of the earth staff and no pretense at all!
google avatar

Kelly M.

Yelp
I really love the Ice Creamsmith. It was introduced to me this Summer and i was hooked. My absolute favorite is the banana ice cream with chocolate chip mix ins. Not flashy I know but it just tastes so fresh and delicious (it is all made there). There is almost always a line in the Summer but moves fairly quickly. The only reason I don't give it 5 stars is because they only take cash. Really, how to justify not taking debit/ credit cards in 2011? It just seems silly to me..... but I still love you Ice Creamsmith.
google avatar

Katherine I.

Yelp
I'm not rating the ice-cream because honestly, I don't remember it. What I am rating is the vintage-old memory of holding my dad's warm hand as we walked into this tiny, jem of sweetness, him picking me up to see the counter where they would fold multi-colored, bubblegum squares into my strawberry ice-cream, after our long day of frog hunting in Grandma's backyard. Mmmmmm nostalgia.
google avatar

Anna M.

Yelp
My family has been going to The Ice Creamsmith for as long as I can remember and I love it! A lot of people seem to have a problem with the lack of flavors. While there is definitely a limited flavor menu to choose from, there are also monthly specials, a number of mix-ins and toppings and everything is made right on location. My family's favorite flavor is mocha. I've tried mocha ice cream at a number of other ice cream places and have never found one that even comes close to being as good as the mocha at The Ice Creamsmith. For me, the servings are on the larger end so I usually opt for a junior scoop - or their version of a small. The location is small and gets crowded quickly but there are benches outside along the street that can be used to eat your ice cream if you so choose. They also don't accept credit/debit cards so make sure you have cash on hand if you're planning a visit there!
google avatar

Sarah M.

Yelp
Hate to say it, but I scream "averagey av av" about The Ice Creamsmith. It's too sweet (especially the Banana, which could be so good!) and just a little bit bland for my liking. In the ultra-competitive ice cream market of Boston, this just doesn't cut it for me. I do like that it's a quaint stop in the neighborhood-y Lower Mills section of Dorchester that seems like it's been around forever. Cash only! Maybe next time I'll try a frappe.
google avatar

Thomas A.

Yelp
if you want mom and pop this is the place. Like a time capsule from Mayberry USA 1962, you really feel like your a kid picking your toppings and flavors. ( for the salty sweet lovers they dont have peanuts). I ce Creme cakes should be special ordered in order to get your crunchy bits in them; other wise they are kinda , ehh. but they are pretty. I love the decor, like a place in a small town.
