The Crypt Behind the Hotel Door

"The Inn at the Roman Forum features its very own ancient ruins, including a crypt built before Christ. The hotel is located near major attractions in Rome such as the Roman Forum and the Colosseum. It has a classic decor with a canopy bed and shuttered windows in the rooms, a terrace with a city view, and a unique crypt open 24 hours a day. The hotel offers great service, including a complimentary breakfast and aperitifs. It's an iconic space in a charmed location." - Mitchell Friedman

The Inn at the Roman Forum

"A daringly renovated seventeenth-century building constructed over an ancient part of the city (on the ground floor is a fascinating vaulted passageway to Trajan’s Market), the Inn at the Roman Forum shows off a striking décor of walls covered in silk moiré, heavy bronze drapes, parquet floors, and sculptures and paintings of approving ancient aristocrats. There are still plenty of period touches, though, like the crumbling plaster walls in passageways, and the odd bust of a former Roman statesman perched on a table, to appropriately set the scene. The 12 rooms are outfitted with four-poster beds swathed in shimmering organza, fiery-orange satin pillows strewn on silk bedspreads, and oversized shaded lamps suspended from coffered wood ceilings. There’s a rooftop breakfast/cocktail terrace, and the fourth floor’s three intimate public rooms are the heart of the hotel. The only downside is that, as with many small, chic hotels, the entire staff seem to consist of the front desk person and a rarely-seen factotum."

We travelled to Rome with our (teenage) daughter and the staff here did everything they could to make our trip memorable. They were very welcoming and helpful. We love Rome, but it was extra special to stay at The Inn on the Forum. The room (more of an apartment really) was fantastic and we especially liked having our own terrace in the evenings. The breakfasts were lovely and we appreciated the wonderful view over the city in the mornings. It's also hard to imagine a better location. Highly recommended.

The inn at the Roman Forum is a hidden gem in Rome. We booked this hotel because of the many fantastic reviews and we were not disappointed at all. The staff are very helpful and friendly and happily booked our restaurants and taxi before we arrived. The room was lovely, with our own garden area. The bed was huge and very comfortable. The breakfasts were really lovely. Sitting on the roof terrace made this extra special. We would recommend a cocktail in the evening before heading out. We went to celebrate our 20th wedding anniversary and the hotel has made it truly memorable.

A hidden gem. If I walked by not knowing, I'd never guess this is a hotel and I mean that as a compliment. Up a small cobblestone dead end so be sure your driver is willing to drop you and your luggage all the way up to the door. We had no issues with this. The rooms are very spacious and comfortable - something I was pleasantly surprised to find. But the real gems here are the staff members. Everyone is so accommodating, welcoming and super helpful. Helped us get drivers when we needed and when the app wasn't helpful for a taxi, a staff member walked us all the way to the taxi stand so we wouldn't get lost. Highly recommend this hotel! We were a family of 4 and split between two rooms.

First of all I am a bed snob and this was the most comfortable bed my husband has EVER slept in. We rented 2 of the patio suites while traveling with 2 couples. The location is fantastic, you can do a 10 min walk to the Colosseum, DEFINITELY go walking at night The streets are shut down to cars and the sites of Caesars forum (5 min walk) and the Colosseum lit up are spectacular and many families are out and about. Uber is very popular and MUCH cheaper than taxi so if you go out further to explore. Venture off out of the hotel front door to the left & down the hill to a few small streets to some amazing Pizza & Gelato, it's a 5 min walk but up and down hills of cobblestone. The customer service is 10 STARS! The breakfast was great and you could eat at your leisure not at a specified time pre-selected like other places we stayed. Shukri was a very kind and patient man, he made us feel welcomed right away. Daniel, Giordano, Noel were all was so attentive with all our needs and any request. Every employee made you feel welcomed and appreciated. A few things to note, the hotel entrance is on a side cobbled street with no drive. DO not let a taxi drop you off at bottom of hill with luggage as we seen many people do it is almost impossible to do. Better yet arrange a ride with the hotel to pick you up at airport (its about a 35-40 min drive) it will be some of the best $ you will spend in Rome. All elevators in Italy are basically small coffins, so you will have to take a few trips to your room. Things to know about Italy, cats are everywhere including the patios of most Rome hotels, Uber over Taxi always, HIRE a tour guide, probably the best thing we did,we had the same guy for 3 days and without him we'd have been lost, waiting in lines and taken advantage of numerous times, toursbylocals is great we used Yevgen L guide #56326, pick pockets in Rome are plentiful, so keep your Backpack sipped & your eye on your belongs. Many restaurants in the tourist areas are just awful & will take advantage of you if you don't speak Italian, eat at the small places on side streets, food is great and they appreciate you so much more. The 3-4 hr Italian dinners are a myth, they will move at the pace you request. if you want good Gelato get out of the tourist zones. enjoy

We had a fantastic stay here. The hotel is very unique and the history is truly eternal!||The hotel sits just minutes walk from the Roman Forum, Colosseum, and Cerchi Park. However, it is quietly nestled in a beautiful little neighborhood. It is very quiet and quaint. ||Upon arrival we were greeted with the welcoming staff and escorted into the ruins beyond the lobby where we were brought a lovely tiramisu welcome treat to enjoy while taking in the ruins. ||The room is impressively large with a huge bathroom. We had a plush king sized bed with cozy down bedding. The thick beautiful curtains ensured that the room was perfectly dark for great sleep even if we wanted a mid day nap. There was a lovely little balcony with a view of the courtyard. With the curtains open the natural light is perfect. The bed was comfortable and we Sisto very nicely here.||The bathroom is very big with a walk in shower and bidet with all toiletries needed to have a comfortable stay. I will say I was a bit bummed that the tile warmer was not functional but the hotel was very kind offering anything to make sure that we were happy. This was not a problem and we stayed in this room as warming towels us a perk but not a requirement. I would also note that the building is quite old and the bathroom had a metallic smell perhaps from the pipes of older plumbing but it was fine as long as we kept the bathroom door closed. I think the hotel was really concerned that we were upset but we absolutely were not just keep in mind this building is antique and if you are coming from the US where everything is new and not used to a potential aroma of antiquity be prepared to experience a true European city and do not complain. ||All details are thought of here including mini bar, clothes steamer, hair dryer, toiletries and a welcome gift. The staff is so friendly and welcoming. They are always ensuring that we were comfortable and happy. ||We absolutely loved our stay here. The hotel is a special place and experience. The nostalgia of standing and staying where the Romans once stood 2000 years ago was definitely a treat! |The hotel has a rooftop terrace where we enjoyed breakfast in the mornings and wine in the evening. The lounge just inside of the terrace is cozy and comfortable to enjoy a glass of wine or cocktail in the evening and there’s a cozy fireplace to warm up, which we took full advantage of after a long wet rainy day in the colosseum and Roman forum. ||We had a great stay here and would highly recommend it to anyone looking for a special Roman experience. We will definitely be back!

Very nice hotel right in the middle of everything. Staff were more than accommodating. Rooms were clean. Needs were addressed right away. I would highly recommend the apartment on the other side of the Inn that provided more space than just a traditional room. There was a kitchen and seating area that made the stay more enjoyable.|The breakfast was more than enough with a great variety to choose from (there are only high back chairs at table designed for 2. The casual chairs seen in the photos near the fireplace just had tables in front for larger parties to eat so you were eating low to the ground. |This is NOT a hotel for anyone who has difficulty walking (walker, wheelchair, etc). There is a steep cobblestone hill to get up to the reception desk. While our driver from the airport brought us up the hill to reception, we had issues with several ubers refusing to go up the hill to drop us off after a day of touring which made it very difficult, especially for our family member who needed to use a wheelchair up the hill. We had to walk down the hill to get an uber (wheelchair is no good on cobblestone) to take us to the hop on hop off location. Only 2 people (without a walker/wheelchair can fit in the elevator).|We attempted to change hotels, but the booking company refused to accommodate.

The staff is so helpful and welcoming. Great location to all the historic sites but also a hidden gem away from the chaos of Rome. We enjoyed breakfast on the rooftop overlooking the city. The historic waiting area is incredible. Our room was amazing and so uniquely designed and decorated. We would stay here again and highly recommend to others.

Google
We have done extensive travel and never written a review, but felt compelled to write one about the Inn. It was a complete pleasure to stay here. The place is gorgeous and ideally located, with an excellent breakfast, comfortable bed, spacious rooms. But the outstanding help we got from warm and intelligent Francesca was extraordinary. She went out of her way to be helpful, including giving us suggestions about our Naples stay. Our days there were ideal. I would go back in a heartbeat! Highly recommend.

Yelp
First day here- just arrived a few hours ago and checked in. After a 10 hour flight and long delay at the airport - the cappuccino and views at this historical site are well worth the wait! Location is perfect to walk to all the big sites in Rome - Coliseum, forum, etc.. be sure to enjoy Breakfast on the 4th floor patio it is amazing! Both morning and evening Receptionists and all the staff was extremely gracious and helpful! They even set up a wonderful golf cart tour for us that was one of our trip highlights! Rooms are cozy and has a great shower and big soft towels- we stayed in 102 that had great elevator access for my 90yr old mom as well!

Yelp
This hotel was in my top 3 most fav hotels of our trip. The staff was great and the history of this hotel made it even more wonderful. If you come you have to walk the tunnels. We booked through a vacation package service and didn't realize we were getting the 2 bedroom family room. OMG. We had a full kitchen, washer, living room, private patio and the whole flat (if you will) to ourselves. It was really the icing on the cake of our trip.

Yelp
The Inn At The Roman Forum We had spectacular visit to Rome, staying at The Inn At The Roman Forum. The hotel (with part of The Forum onsite) and room was amazing, but it was the service that really stands out. Starting with check-in, we were helped by Sucharest (sp?) who was so kind and welcoming. He happily answered all our questions and helped us make transportation arrangements, and would not accept a tip. Our bellman also cheerfuly brought all our luggage up to our room and gave us a detailed tour of the facilities. I wish I had asked for his name, but we were exhausted from our journey. The staff at the bar/restaurant also went above and beyond. The restaurant terrace is beautiful, and has an amazing view of Rome, including an outdoor patio and a lookout perch. The first night, Ian (Ayan?) served our drinks and snacks and gave us some inside tips on where to to explore. The next day, the breakfast staff was amazing. Ayeth, Ernio, AJ and Mae took such wonderful care of us, we instantly felt like we were in a first-class resort. And the food was outstanding. This hotel was our oasis in Rome and we can't wait to go back!

Yelp
Excellent service by staff. Good choice as it's near tourist sites in close enough to see everything with a bit of walking. The streets has beautiful cobblestone, must have comfortable shoes if walking. rooms are very intermittent. The staff was very helpful, kind, awesome! The Inn was a very nice stay. The daily breakfast was good with a good selection.... We really enjoyed our stay at The Inn Roman Forum

Yelp
I think the right word here is boutique hotel. When you arrive there is just a seated desk where you will find the most friendly person 24/7. The welcome experience is the best of my life. Taking you in your have dessert while enjoying a 2000 year old property attached to the hotel is special. The rooms are one of a kind as we stayed in two separate due to an upgrade they had for us on our second night. Breakfast on the rooftop was made to order and a fantastic start to the day. Loved the quiet, fewer rooms means fewer people and it's walking distance to everything although in Rome you can walk lots.

Yelp
Horrible hotel. Old, run down and desk managers are terrible. Many things were broken, peeling wallpaper, bathroom door would not shut all the way. Yucky is the best way to describe it.

Michelle S.

Yelp
We booked (2) rooms. The condition of both rooms were horrendous and we requested a full refund immediately. One room had a mildew infested air conditioner & the 2nd room had ants all over the bathroom. Room #1was on ground floor (101) near the reception desk. It stunk of mildew/mold. And after investigation, the air conditioner was filled with Black mold/mildew. We had immediately complained to the female receptionist upon noticing the mold/mildew. The female receptionist explained a "manager" would come in early to help resolve the issue. While waiting the 2 hours for the manager, we ate dinner and returned. That's when we met the man, who said his name was Shukri , but claimed he was only a "receptionist"? He explained there was nothing he could do. He wanted to see room#1 air conditioner. He wiped the A/C with his finger & it turned black. He did not permit us to take a picture of his blackened finger. We were going to stay together in Room #2 on the 4th floor (# 401) out of concern for our health in ground floor room. We returned to the room on the 4th floor to find ants all over the bathroom /tub. We immediately called reception again to notify. Shakuri returned. We asked to speak to the manager, but was told the managers "were sleeping" at 9:15pm ("you want me to wake them up?"). This was right after he returned to us stating he just got off the phone with the managers? Less horrendous: Keep aware of your email reservation confirmation. It states, "walk in shower". They told us numerous times they were, "fully booked" . The only (2) rooms they had available for us did not have a shower, only jacuzzi tubs with tall sides. The female receptionist said I should've "told them" that I needed a shower. I did not think I had to tell them (I have a problem with my leg), because the email confirmation (and web site) clearly says "walk-in shower". Shakuri, as a representative of the Inn at the Roman Forum was still against refunding our money, so we could go somewhere safer and cleaner. Shakuri said, "accounting is closed". My daughter had asthma & a hole in her heart - so black mold is very much a dangerous concern. I worked and sacrificed the last 3 years ,,, working 3 jobs, (during Covid) 70-75 hours a week, for this vacation,,, to celebrate our 30th wedding anniversary . I choose this hotel based on TripAdvisor, Costco & Yelp reviews. This is a very disappointing , dangerous , and bug infested situation. I feel I let my family down. This is why, despite my own health issue, I was left with no choice but to limp around (roam) the streets of Rome at 11pm to try and find an available hotel. We requested an immediate refund several times verbally & via email within minutes, (as Shakuri instructed). Please pray they do the right-honorable thing. We left within 3 hours of finding the ant infested bathroom. Never even stayed (1) night. 24 hours later & they have yet to respond. This was not our 1st stay in Italy. It was our 3rd hotel and not a cheap hotel, costing $2,300+ US dollars for (4) nights. It is 2:45AM and I'm in severe physical pain from exhausting my leg and the added mental worry that the Inn took our money upfront (+ taxes). Happy Anniversary to me .

Yelp
We had stayed at their sister property at the Spanish Steps during the initial part of our trip to Italy, and we decided to stay at the Roman Forum location on our return. We decided to walk here from the train station after coming back from Venice (probably should have taken a taxi), and had a hard time initially finding the hotel entrance. It is amazing, however, to look outside and see all of the ancient ruins that happen to pop up in the neighborhood. We ended up staying in a junior suite, which was spacious and modern. Prior to going to our room, we also checked out the ruins on the bottom level, which was pretty cool to see. As with their other hotel, they serve a good breakfast each morning on the roof. The Inn at the Roman Forum was nicely located for exploring the Colosseum and other sights in this part of Rome.

Yelp
Unique rooms, great staff, great location! Historic old cobblestone streets hide this gem of a hotel. Really unique rooms and history and a friendly helpful staff. Walkable to most sites and near a Metro station. Our room even had a jacuzzi tub! The daily breakfast is good with a large variety and great coffee. Really enjoyed this place and its staff.

Yelp
My boyfriend and I had to book a reservation last minute and thankfully this hotel had a spot. This has been one of the best experiences We've ever had and we only stayed here for one night. When we entered, the staff immediately greeted us with a smile, water, wine, and dessert. They were so unbelievably kind. Something we haven't been used to since our stay in Italy. It seems like a lot of people don't like tourists. (Not taken personally) the apartment style room we stayed in was beautiful and so comfortable. They have room service which was nice, bathrobes which I love, and breakfast Included. It was just such a pleasure staying here. Thank you so much to the staff who were so kind to us.

Yelp
Such as great place to stay! I miss it already. We came before checkin time, which was fine as it gave us time to ask for recommendations (which were spot on), check out the amazing crypt and have a glass of wine... how many people can say they have done that! So fun! The room was so nice and cozy. The bed was comfy and so huge! The jacuzzi's in the bathtub was ideal after walking miles and miles. We had one of the rooms with the private garden and it was so nice, we tried to spend as much time in between sightseeing and eating there. The service was fantastic. We had a evening glass of wine on the terrace, where the view was really nice. I really enjoyed the whole experience of it.

Yelp
Set in the heart of the Monti district The Inn at the Roman Forum was a spectacular find. Checking into the hotel in a secret ancient underground lobby forum was certainly a surprise and a fun way to experience ancient Rome. The homemade tiramisu was one of the best I've ever had. Rooms are small (as most Italian hotels are) but it has all the basic amenities plus lots of charm. The rooftop breakfast is a highlight. Outdoor seating under a vined canopy overlooking the city rooftops and made-to-order eggs is a nice addition to the included and expansive breakfast buffet. The location is excellent being close to the cobblestone streets of Monti, a 20 min walk from the Trevi Fountain and 20 min from the Collosseum.

Yelp
I stayed here in a junior suite this past January. I was greeted with a drink and a treat, and waited in the section which is some ruins of the forum, which of course were pretty interesting. The staff was most gracious, including very thorough turndown service in the evening with goodies. My room was quite large, and the complimentary toiletries were high grade. My bathroom also had a jacuzzi tub, always a score. The location was great; I was able to walk to just about all of my touristy destinations. The complimentary breakfast buffet was delicious, with a very good selection variety, plus they would bring an extra sweet treat to each person. I didn't try the aperitivo buffet in the afternoon, but it did look pretty good. The terrace outside of the dining room would be a lovely place to enjoy in warmer weather. Overall, a nice small boutique hotel, and I would definitely recommend staying here when in Rome.

Yelp
What a beautiful, special, fun location. Every detail has been considered and everything is better than you could have imagined. I'd recommend to anyone looking for a special place to stay.

Yelp
This is a 5 star place. Room was great, the staff was amazing, they went over and above to make sure every second of our stay was as good as it could be. These people care about your stay and it shows. Great breakfast, drinks in the evening. I can't say enough about the staff. They really made our stay enjoyable.

Yelp
The Inn at The Roman Forum is located in the heart of most of the top tourist destinations. Your taxi will likely drop you off down a small cobblestone hill from the entrance. The historic hotel offers spacious rooms by Roman standards and an area with thousand-year-old walls, a crypt, where one may have a glass of wine. It is like stepping back into time--and sitting in a cave-like structure. There is a lovely rooftop breakfast area with views. It was our favorite part of our four-day stay at The Inn. The service was top-notch and by day two they knew us well enough to remember our previous day order. The fourth-floor breakfast area offers both inside dining, although one eats on a sofa and it's a tad tricky for dining; and outside, regular tables on two levels. Room service was quite adequate when required. The downsides are the rooms are somewhat dark (new lighting is needed) and the front desk could be less service friendly or available at times.
google avatar

Jim P.

Yelp
Maybe my favorite hotel I've ever stayed at, anywhere. The friendliest staff you'll ever find, well appointed rooms that are spacious by Roman standards, a cool crypt you can go into and enjoy prosecco before dinner, and a rooftop terrace and garden serving up a tasty breakfast every morning. Got great recommendations from the staff every time I asked about something to do, see, or eat. Can't recommend it highly enough.

Scott B.

Yelp
We recently stayed 3 nights here. Everything was great. The staff is really helpful. They even packed a boxed breakfast for us when we had to leave early one morning. The breakfast is really good with a large variety. The happy hour at rhe outside seating area is great. The room was nice and clean. It's the staff though is what makes this hotel shine. Highly recommended.

Yelp
Stayed for our honeymoon 4 years ago and cannot wait to return. Seeing as there is not a Four Seasons in Rome (hint, hint) and the St. Regis is in a decidely unfavorable area, this boutique option shines through. The rooms are spacious by Roman standards and you cannot beat the short stroll to the heart of ancient Rome. Enjoy breakfast on the lovely terrace if the weather permits. Ciao!

Yelp
Outstanding!!!!! Stayed here for 3 nights in June. A great little boutique hotel with gracious and hospitable service in the heart of Old Rome.

Ann Marie G.

Yelp
I'm shocked that there hasn't been a more recent review of this exceptional inn. Upon our arrival after a long transatlantic flight, we were greeted with refreshments and the sunniest of smiles and dispositions. While we sipped our drinks and toured the ruins which are connected via a passageway, our check in was completed. Our room was stunning. Luxurious. I've tried to upload pictures, but to no avail. You'll have to trust me. Stefano, Rosalba, Hilda and the entire staff attended to our every need. They helped with dinner reservations. They pointed us towards excellent gelato places. Il Gelatone is the place! And you have to go to Ai Tre Scalini! They even let me practice my limited Italian The breakfast offerings were vast and delicious. The cocktail reception in the evenings were a nice respite after touring all day. The inn is walking distance to the Colosseum and Palatin Hill. The Inn at the Roman Forum was my first introduction to Rome. To Italy. I will have such fond memories.

Joslyn C.

Yelp
We loved this hotel. Very close to everything, great food, friendly staff. My only complaint was the room a bit warm (my husband didn't mind).
