The 38 Essential Restaurants in Detroit

"Good things come in small packages, like Detroit’s best jerk chicken served up in a strip mall off Eight Mile. While the Jamaican Pot is exclusively carryout, expect to wait a bit while the humming kitchen carefully prepares each order of dishes like curry goat and pepper steak, which are served with earthy rice and peas, shredded cabbage and peppers stewed down with vinegar, and caramelized sweet plantains. The jerk chicken is seasoned with a blend of pungent spices that offer the ideal level of heat and then grilled over a live-fire until its exterior reaches the smoky, barky texture that traditional jerk is known for. To drink, cool down that heat with a bottle of Kola Champagne or keep the spice going with an effervescent ginger beer." - Serena Maria Daniels

Food was bomb! And service was good as well. Gotta love dealing with people who can make you laugh. I recommend the jerk chicken and oxtail combo plate

Chris Goodin

Google
The staff is exceptionally kind. Our first time we received free samples. The food was absolutely delicious. The spice was intense”The Jamaican Way” but full in rich flavor and cooked with love. I highly recommend any chicken lovers, a new vibe place, or just food efficianados to try The Jamaican Pot. You won’t be let down.

Google
This is the best Jamaican restaurant Thts in Mi I Dnt knw where to really start but the customer service is unmatched and the food quality is too . The owner treat everyone like they her family and always want you Satisfied, the The pepper steak is to die for the steak literally melts in your mouth and all the dessert and drinks are on point. I have been to other Jamaican and Caribbean restaurants and Ben let down and honestly the food was disgusting and the price was outrageous. It’s the total opposite that you’re making pie. I suggest you asked about the cocoa bread. OMG it is delicious and the sweet potato brownies I can go on and on, but all it would take you this one time to try it out and you will see. No I do not work there and this is not a pay advertisement. I am just openly telling you the truth you got to try it.

Google
We stopped by here because Rose (the owner) banks at where my fiance worked. I figured I knew what jerk seasoning was from what I had from the grocery store. Y'ALL! I did not know what good Jamaican food was. It was so good! We had the Oxtails and Jerk Chicken and my God was it eye-opening. Next time we got the Jerk Chicken with Oxtail gravy and again got a flavor blast! I love the cabbage as well. If I lived closer, I would easily eat there all the time.

Google
My sister friend and I ran across this place. It is very good😋the meat is tender and the flavors are on point. Been twice now and they have not disappointed. Thank you Jamaican Pot!!!!

Google
So I like jamaican pot been coming here for years placing orders online & noticed today that online prices through chow now are like $5 higher than the menu price for a pickup order..I think that is ridiculous considering the fact that they don't take call in orders..CLEARLY GETTING OVER Update..this is my $4 of jerk chicken that was 6 on chownow

Jerome Scott

Google
This was my first time trying jerk chicken. I didn't care for it. The servings we're very generous here however

Google
I was a little hesitant to try this but my daughter talked me into it. Got there and tried a sample, which was good. Now, I’m super hungry and ready for my food. Ordered 3 dinners. Got home and my rice and beans were dry, the cabbage tastes like trash, and the plantains were not a favorite of mine so I won’t comment about it. Bugs flying around everywhere! Needless to say, they won’t get my money again! I’ve had Jamaican food before and it was the bomb!!! This place did not live up to the hype…

Yelp
I finally made it back for a full meal after sampling the jerk and curry chicken meals. I ordered the small serving (not the sample sized) of curry chicken. My son requested the jerk chicken. When I say the food is on point, I wouldn't even hold you up on deception. My son was upset that I didn't order the size medium for him. He stands 6'5" and weighs 275 so of course he wanted more. Unfortunately, all takeout restaurants are pricy, but I say if you're going to dine out, make it worth every cent of your money. The Jamaican Pot is consistent with their recipes. The customer service could use some work. Not because of rudeness. Just to service the hungry customers faster. Do yourself a favor of ordering online ahead of time. This restaurant tends to have a 30 minute wait for pickup orders due to the high volume of orders. I will return next month to try the oxtails!

Yelp
This place is The Jamaican Pot I thought the food was tasty But the ambiance could be cleaner. The curry goat tasted like it had been on the warmer all day. But was still tasty. The jerk chicken was good. The cabbage was delicious and the " Ting " a grapefruit soda really delicious and refreshing. Let's not forget the plantain. The lady at the counter taking my order was super nice and patient with a smile. The only thing I will say is the place needs a cleaning and location might have you looking over your shoulder . But flavorful Jamaican food you must try.

Yelp
Some of the best Jamaican food I've ever had. I'm constantly craving the jerk chicken from here and I wish I lived closer so I could come here more often. The seasonings are always on point and the heat level is perfect. The medium portion of jerk chicken is enough to feed two people and still have leftovers afterwards! My only complaint is that the wait time is never accurate. We always show up 10-15 minutes after our order is supposed to be ready and usually end up having to wait longer for our order. The food is definitely worth the wait, I just hope they can improve their process.

Yelp
Food was too,Too Salty... Missing food items with order...food was too salty Meat pie was missing with order,Bad Experience...Waste of earned money....The cabbage is lacking,The Rice and peas is lacking. Authenticity of Jamaican culture is lacking...Disappointing People who eat there Haven't had a taste of real Jamaican food...

Yelp
I love Jamaican food and I appreciate how this place is conveniently located. However, I believe this is for people who don't eat authentic Jamaican food. It's missing some serious seasoning and spices m. The ambiance is there the service is ok. If you appreciate seasoning and spices this may not be the place for you. Iykyk.
google avatar

Opolla B.

Yelp
I bet they don't serve that food to their family. I won't ever go there again. The food was way too salty. It wasn't a whole lot that was edible but for some reason, they still have people coming. The goat was tough and chewy. Sorry, but I won't go there again. The service was fine. It's a carry out place so don't go there to sit.
google avatar

E.C B.

Yelp
Curry! Chicken??? However it's not chicken. Boneless chicken doesnt seem as authentic as suggested. Bring back the real chicken with bones, and you guys are solid! Authentic means authentic!!!!! The cabbage needs work. I'll comeback and try again. Hopefully some changes will be made to improve things. Real chicken juices mix well with the curry. This tastes like straight curry sauce no flavor of juices from the chicken whatsoever.

Yelp
Great service overall I would definitely recommend this restaurant extra hot food could use different sides ....

Maysun J.

Yelp
Jerk Chicken Really good and reasonably priced I always get the same things and it never disappoints the staff are nice as well.

Christine G.

Yelp
I visited The Jamaican Pot a couple weeks ago and I will NEVER go back there again! I ordered "Jerk wings" but received these wing dings that didn't have any jerk seasoning whatsoever! They tasted (and looked) more so like BBQ Tyson wings and it was just extremely disappointing. I couldn't even finish my food I was so ticked off. I believe these people know exactly what they're doing taking your money and not giving you the quality food you were expecting.
google avatar

Willie C.

Yelp
I ordered food from this restaurant and I told the woman at the counter if the food was good i would write a review. Let me say the food I ordered was exceptional to say the least. i had the Jerk Chicken and Ox Tails combination plate with peach cobbler and this was by far the best meal I had in Detroit in a long time. Keep up the good work and I will be visiting this restaurant again soon.
google avatar

Yelp
A MUST WHEN IN THE CITY! I will travel through knee high snow and terrible weather for this food! It's soooo good! I get the jerk salmon and it's gone immediately - I have to get 2 pieces next time, haha! The staff are nice and very conversational which is nice in the restaurant business - especially because there isn't any seating inside the location. You have to try this food! Amazing!
google avatar

Rhea C.

Yelp
Food is great! Staff is friendly and atmosphere always upbeat! I highly recommend the Jamaican pot!
google avatar

Rachele D.

Yelp
The food here is DELICIOUS!! This pic is from our first visit here when we ordered two combos- we were super impressed!! Everything was delicious, but the curried goat was definitely our favorite!! On our 2nd visit we ordered an extra large 2-meat combo and we're surprised and disappointed that it was equal to just one of these standard-sized styrofoam containers for nearly double the price (and not enough for two hearty appetites. So just make sure you order correctly and you're sure to be happy.

Yelp
So far I've only tried a few things because I have been mainly hooked on the jerk chicken (*mild) with the rice and peas, plantains also cabbage on the side. The beef patties are really good! The outside is light and flaky with a slight spicy kick from the meat inside. Lastly, the oxtails were pretty good also.
google avatar

Yelp
order by phone and plan for soon come time pick up. food is touristy taste; medium sized portions but priced for top tier. nope, I will go home and Bake chicken with brown sauce; because Jerk requires Pimento WOOD Smoking. not a jar sauce. when you order food you should be told what sides are available if it is considered a meal. instead of being charged ala carte for rice and a salad. dinners always include a side. they unfortunately are not on my list to support in my neighborhood. its a firm no from me

Dave A.

Yelp
Way too much sauce on my delivery. Lots of flavor, just not a great flavor. Just tried the same jerk chicken and ox tails at aunty joys in chicago, and this is trash in comparison.Jamaican JerkJerk ChickenJerk Oxtail. I will not buy again from here
google avatar

Vincent L.

Yelp
All the food website has this place listed as a top 5 Jamaican spot in Detroit so I try it out. I never had Jamaican food before but the chicken taste very good, chicken is marinated pretty well. The ratings are not wrong. Triple delight you can try 3 types of chicken in your plate. Price can be cheaper but I am still thinking about 2020 prices. Beef patties are great too, they are not greasy. Too bad they never have chicken patties every time I walk in. I don't have a problem with service or food portion so far ( I do tip like $1, $2 ) every time so maybe why .

Yelp
We ordered the Ox tail and Jerk Chicken and Ox Tail jerk dinners. Food was awesome delicious and scrumptious all at the same time! Pulled up to the spot and place was small, but don't let that deter you. Jerk Ox tail was better than regular-

Freeman J.

Yelp
My lady and I just had the Jerk Salmon. I used to make it here on the grill. I am now prohibited from doing so. I now must get Jerk Salmon from The Jamaican Pot. LOL. Awesome!

Justin K.

Yelp
Came here for the first time on the way home. This place was amazing. I never had Jamaican food, it was amazing for a great value. I was treated with awesome service, got my food very quickly and really liked the genuine feel that the restaurant had.
google avatar

Yelp
Shame to call it Jamaican food..tasteless curry chicken..got a mini meal..thank god..threw out all the rubbery stale chicken. Veges was only thin cabbage dumped on the side..the main reasoning got this was for the plantains..oh! But they didn't have any..send u home without letting u know ..cannot call them..very convenient for them..order online..is what it's at..island spice curry much tastier..was really sad to get this kinda food..totally unhappy
google avatar

Yelp
Great Jamaican food and the owner Ms. Rose is an absolute sweetheart. No inside seating but that is ok, all of the food is delicious
google avatar

Libby M.

Yelp
Updates after being told I was wrong about their Jerk Chicken & it's no good....listen, am from New York and i KNOW what jerk chicken is supposed to be.....with that being said, I LOVE their jerk chicken even though it's not your normal jerk chicken from a Jerk spot! I heard a few complaints about it from other customers so I had to come on here & explain myself lol.... It's more like stewed jerk chicken, the flavor can't be beat! The chicken is chopped up and very juicy, not made on a grill but in a pot, hence the name "Jamaican POT" so prepare yourself for something different but I promise you will love every bit of it! I'm actually on my way to get a plate of it now so maybe I'll add a pic of my dinner later on.
google avatar

Anthony B.

Yelp
I love the food very much, I came here for my birthday and the food was delicious. I'm sad that Rose was not there, I bought over one hundred dollars worth of stuff. I will be back soon for the food.

Charity B.

Yelp
Great food! I love the jerk chicken and their curry chicken. The portions are a great size and the staff are all cool

Charles S.

Yelp
This was my first time ordering from this restaurant. I ordered the chicken stew (nothing like the stew I expected) and oxtail dinner (It only had 3 oxtails. I purchaed the large size.) I put in the order online because they do not answer the phone. They did not email or text me that my order was ready so I went there to pick up the order. When I got home both dinners did not include plantains. The yellow cabbage was shredded and they saturated the rest of the containers with rice ( I requested brown but I'm sure it was white) There is nothing carribean about this food. Everything was TOO SALTY! I threw it in the garbage (and I gave a tip). The prices are too steep to be serving mediocre food. I was very disappointed! I will no longer be patronizing this restaurant.

Daja A.

Yelp
Just left and the lady who takes order is so rude. It's nothing worse then rude customer service. If I'm paying my hard earned money I at least deserve a kind welcome and not disgusting behavior. Food was good but probably won't go back

Yelp
It's a small carry out spot. A rather high counter top where you order and cash out. Makes for signing the credit card fun. Looks less than appealing on the outside and the inside too. My husband wanted to run for the hills upon getting a sight of the inside. We ordered the triple chicken: jerk, BBQ and curry chicken. It comes with side of rice and peas, plaintains and cabbage. I got an extra side of cabbage. It's not fast food and takes a bit of time, food is prepared fresh to order. Takes about 15-20 minutes. Better and more efficient to have an idea of what you want since it can get crowded in here and there's not a lot of room if the lines long at all. It's been 16 minutes, only order 11 is out. We are order 17. No pagers here, you just have to wait. 22 minutes, no more orders out yet. The woman that has order 14 has been here for almost 30 minutes now. 35 minutes later and order 14 and 15 are out. It's all out of order, it seems. A few minutes later and finally our order was called. We were never told how long our food order might take. Had no inclination it would take so long. My husband was very reluctant to order food from here at all, after seeing the inside store upon entry. He wanted to leave as soon as we crossed the threshold. He said he sensed the kitchen wasn't the cleanest and wasn't certain if he would be eating the food even. The curry chicken wasn't bad, the jerk chicken and the BBQ chicken are better. They don't give big portions of any of the 3 items. Mostly beans and rice on the bottom, below the meats. The jerk chicken has a bit of kick, it's not bad. It was the better of the three. The cabbage is really bland, regretting the added side of it now. Added Tabasco to give it a bit of flavor. The plaintains are sweet, as expected. The wait here was much longer than expected, even for a nice sit down restaurant, which, this clearly is not. The food overall wasn't bad, the jerk chicken was the best of the triple chicken. The cabbage wasn't worth the money. As long as you are prepared to wait at least an half hour or longer for your food, it's not half bad then.

Yelp
Friendly takeout restaurant serving fine Jamaican Cuisine in northwest Detroit! Jamaican Pot is located in a little strip mall at 8 Mile Rd & Hubbell. We ordered a Large Curry Chicken meal, and a Jerk Oxtail meal to go. Prices are very reasonable so tip accordingly given the quality, quantity of food and splendid service. My Curry chicken was amazingly tender served on a bed of rice with a few red beans. Fried ripened (sweet) plantain slices and a warm cabbage slaw were nice sides. My companion loved the jerk spices and heat they imparted with the ox-tail. Know that chicken is served in a variety of wonderfully creative ways here: jerk-style (spicy), curry style (yellow spice), brown sauce (melt in your mouth meat in a savory, saltier sauce) and sweeter barbecue style. Go to the website, and download the dining app for fast, seamless service. We tried a piece of walnut rum cake which was MAGIC! Can't wait to return!
google avatar

Taleila C.

Yelp
Great food!!! My go to spot! Friendly staff!!! Oxtails are amazing and rice and cabbage great amount of spice

Brittany D.

Yelp
Disgusting. Sugary "jerk" chicken. Taste like diabetes. Unseasoned cabbage. They gave me 2 plantains. Will not return.

W H.

Yelp
Beyond terrible. Cabbage not fully cooked. Salmon as small as a chicken wing. Do not!! And I repeat Do not waste ur money here. I use to always get my Jamaican food from Rono's and they were a disappointment. Then it was Caribbean Citchen. They are hit and miss. But both of them are better than this place. Never Again!!!!
google avatar

B D.

Yelp
Food is sometimes good but they never have plantains. The cabbage is a lot of times hard and not good and they will advertise plantains as a dish and only give you 3 slices or will say they don't have plantains (which they never do) And give double nasty cabbage. Don't even bother calling, they won't answer and have it set to go to an automated message!
google avatar

Erica G.

Yelp
I've been trying different Jamaican restaurants in the past year, and I have to say that The Jamaican Pot ranks one of the top to me so far! I was thinking to try this place last year. So the other day I was in the area, and decided to place an order: Small Jerk Chicken dinner. Everything was really good in my opinion, the chicken had just the right amount of spice, the cabbage was seasoned, and the plantains were also really good! I also let my friend try the chicken, and he enjoyed it as well. I will definitely order again from this place whenever back in the area.
google avatar

Jenny P.

Yelp
Ugh this place is so good!!! I still have lots to try but I always, ALWAYS get the beef patty. I want to try the chicken ones but they never have it when I walk in. Maybe if I order takeout ahead of time? Their oxtail is super delicious and I enjoy the rice that comes with it and the slaw and plantain. So delicious! Oxtail is super tender ugh. I think they usually have it done around 3 pm? I call in advance for a later pick up time just in case they run out. I wish I was closer to this place. I need to check when they have curry goat available. They haven't lately
google avatar

Nathavia S.

Yelp
I just order jerk ox tails and the rice was hard and only received 4 ox tails for 19.99. I have been several times and today they get a thumbs down.

Telvin A.

Yelp
Honestly the best jerk chicken and oxtail in Detroit!! Great service and great food! Definitely recommend
google avatar

Sunchez S.

Yelp
So I have not been a a long time, so I'm order of making sure that I keep my review up to date I am going to go in the next few weeks and grab some food so that I can give a thorough review. What I do remember is that I do like the Oxtails, but I wasn't so well pleased with the cabbage cause it was a little more crunchy than I enjoy. However I'll be back with an updated review and pics!

Donnetta B.

Yelp
My first time eating here but my family comes all the time. I'm not crazy about trying new foods but I'm glad I did. The pepper steak was so good and different I loved it. People please leave a tip for service this restaurant gives amazing food!
google avatar

Andrea E.

Yelp
Loved it! I got a small jerk chicken lunch special and had leftovers. It was perfectly spicy, the plantains were perfectly soft and sweet with some crispy bits and the cabbage was also amazing. Cabbage being amazing says a lot... and they have patties! There was a constant line but we didn't wait long. We sat in the car for maybe 10 minutes (the waiting area is small) then went back in to check and it was ready a few minutes later.
google avatar

Hyunji C.

Yelp
I would highly recommend this restaurant for Jamaican food! I ordered the triple chicken delight in a size medium and pepper steak in a size medium. In the triple chicken delight, I ordered the jerk chicken, brown stew chicken, and bbq chicken. The brown stew chicken was so tender it almost fell apart on my fork (in a good way)! I really liked the flavors of the bbq and jerk chicken but the jerk chicken was my favorite. All the chicken is boneless. The meat is served on top of a bed of rice and beans. It also comes w a side of veggies and plantains. Portion sizes were really large and could be shared by 3 people. Takeout was served hot and it was still warm by the time I got home 30 min later. I would recommend ordering 30min before you intend to pick it up if you order through their website. Plenty of parking in the parking lot to wait for pickup. It gets crowded even for takeout!
google avatar

Monique H.

Yelp
Omg, why am I just finding out about this place? Everything was delicious no complaints. Lady on the register was friendly, patient and very helpful when I was making my decision on what to get. I'm already planning on what to get when I go back next Friday.
google avatar

Rich G.

Yelp
One of the Detroit's westside finest Jamaica restaurant. From the jerk season to the beef patties this is the bomb.
google avatar

Sierra B.

Yelp
My food was pretty good. I really enjoyed all of it. The cabbage is a little crunch and has great flavor. I got curry and jerk chicken. The service was good as well. The wait was shorter than expected. I've had them several times before and the food is always good. This was my 1st time to their store front location.

Arielle W.

Yelp
I stopped by Jamaican Pot last night because I had been craving Jamaican food and I was finally in the area. I ordered the triple chicken with jerk, curry, and brown stew. The dinner automatically comes with rice and peas, cabbage, and plantains. I was very disappointed to open my box and see that there were no plantains. In confusion , I went and checked the menu again to make sure that I wasn't mistaken. Nope, plantains are supposed to come with it, and were just missing. Sucks because I was looking forward to the plantain. Instead they put extra rice and peas with some sauce. They also seemed to have given me bbq chicken instead of jerk chicken. I tried to call but could not get through. I live in Sterling Heights so driving all the way back to 8 mile and Hubbell wasn't happening. I'm so disappointed cause I hate when I crave something and it's messed up when I finally get it

Yelp
I heard good things about this place on TikTok. My first time I ordered online and picked up my order. I traveled 30 min-got all the way home and was missing about half of the order. I did get to enjoy the oxtails though they didnt quite fall off the bone like what I'm used to and I enjoyed the wrong version of the 3 pick chicken option Which was decent but a bit salty. I took pictures of my food and kept the receipt and went back a day later to retrieve my missing items. The lady at the register told me there was nothing she could do and that I hate to wait on the owner who went to the store. I waited and about 15 minutes later the owner came in and we spoke. She greatly apologized letting me know that day was very busy- which it was-and that staff was new. She accommodated me for my missing items plus my whole new order over again plus a complementary drink. This time the food was much better. Not as salty. My favorite was the jerk and curry chicken. Also they have beef Pattie's but they are not on the menu.

Brittany H.

Yelp
Food was excellent. Ordered the jerk chicken with oxtails, beef patty and coco bread. Plantains were sweet. One of my favorite places for Jamaican food.

Felicia C.

Yelp
Food is fire check them out and service is excellent beef pies are a must try and the jerk chicken slap.
