The Josie Hotel | Best ski hotels in North America

"Opened in winter 2018, the Josie is the region’s first boutique hotel, and the first ski-in, ski-out hotel to open in Canada in over a decade. Named after one of the town’s most notable mines, the Josie Mine, there’s nothing dark and dingy about this place – the guest rooms, studios and suites boast plush bedding, spacious bathrooms and heated floors. Floor-to-ceiling windows showcase stellar views of Red Mountain and the Rossland Range. Quebec-born chef Marc-Andre Choquette heads the restaurant, with a French-influenced seasonal menu. Guests get post-mountain recovery at the spa, with its panoramic slope-side cedar barrel saunas (complete with glass walls for people-watching). " - Nicola Iseard

Wonderful hotel with a modern mountain chalet design in an amazing location. The rooms are spacious, clean, quality bath amenities, very nice linen and nespresso machines for morning coffee. Nio at the Front Desk was very courteous and helpful and extended a very warm welcome. Heated, secure parkade is a plus. We had dinner at The Velvet, their on site restaurant and every dish we had was delicious. Overall a wonderful experience. Would definitely return and highly recommend.

My partner and I booked The Josie Hotel for 5N/6D, syncing up with Red Mountain Resort's opening day on December 13th, although this wss delayed many times due to conditions, which we understand is a possibility early in the season. We selected the hotel for its luxury amenities, comfort, and ski-in/ski-out features that Marriott Bonvoy would provide. Overall, the room was spacious, had a Nespresso machine, and the bed was very comfortable. However, the hotel needs more work. Since there was no skiing, we were actively looking for things to fill our time. It would benefit them to have a swimming pool, a billiards table, and/or a hot tub (especially given its proximity to Red Mountain Resort). We did get the opportunity to use the barrel sauna for 45 minutes, but it hardly got hot even after pouring a bucket of water. Halfway during our stay, there was a power outage, and eventually they requested we vacate after the power remained out for a second night. They were polite but it still meant we had to find a new place to stay. We adapted, found new accommodations, and continued on our Powder highway journey, but would we return? Only time will tell...

I arrived at The Josie, Autograph Collection on New Year’s Eve as a Titanium Elite Marriott Bonvoy member, expecting a baseline level of service. Upon arrival, the hotel restaurant was completely unavailable due to being “too full.” We were instructed by the restaurant to call room service and were given a menu. When we contacted room service, we were told it was unavailable because the hotel had run out of food. When I asked the front desk for alternative options, the only suggestion offered was to try DoorDash. There was a clear lack of communication and coordination between the restaurant, room service, and front desk. Unfortunately, food delivery services were not available in the area, leaving us with no food options whatsoever—at a remote mountain resort, on New Year’s Eve, after travel. The following morning reinforced that this was not an isolated issue. Breakfast service took approximately 45 minutes to receive a yogurt bowl and a single breakfast sandwich. At that point, it became evident that whoever is responsible for food & beverage operations—whether staffing, logistics, or overall management—has significant issues that need to be addressed. For a hotel of this caliber, especially given its remote location where guests are heavily dependent on on-site services, this is unacceptable. Running out of food, offering no contingency plan, and then providing extremely slow service the next morning reflects poor planning and inadequate guest care. Suggesting third-party delivery in an area where it does not operate is not a solution. The property itself is beautiful, but experiences like this significantly detract from what should have been a memorable stay. At minimum, guests should be able to rely on a hotel to provide basic access to food—particularly during peak holiday periods.

We stayed at this Autograph Collection hotel for three nights, and unfortunately, it fell far short of the standards we’ve come to expect from other Autograph properties in North America and Europe. This is neither a boutique hotel nor a true luxury property. It lacks the individuality and character that typically distinguish Autograph Collection hotels, instead feeling like a generic large ski-resort operation.|The hotel is owned by an American company based in Texas and was only recently added to the Autograph/Marriott portfolio. Prior to that, it functioned simply as a ski-resort hotel — and, in truth, that’s still exactly how it feels.|The on-site restaurant, Velvet, was disappointing for both breakfast and dinner, and we would not recommend dining there. On a positive note, the rooms were clean and the staff provided adequate service, though nothing beyond functional.

I think this is a newer facility. The room was well decorated and oh so clean. The bed super comfy and temperature perfect even though outside switched from hot to near freezing in October season. The desk workers are accomodating too. Lots of building development in that area so parking is a bit challenging. I had to park down in a gravel construction area. Not much of a walk, limited lighting. This hotel backs up to the ski slope and I bet in winter ski season they will be packed so early reservations are recommended.

Overall average experience, but with a negative overall impression. Front desk should be able to offer free parking when situations warrant, and have coffee available later than 7am. Have stayed there several times in the past, am a Marriott Bonvoy member. Suggestion1: When occupancy is low, generate goodwill with guests when snow is predicted and the garage is nearly empty. |Suggestion 2: Have coffee available later than 7am. |I understand you need to be profitable, but cutting these types of amenities at a luxury hotel is bad form. How much does it cost to offer complimentary parking in bad weather conditions and to have coffee available until mid morning?

Beautiful hotel. The service was wonderful. We were immediately upgraded to a suite upon arrival and told everything we needed to know about our stay. The tub was wonderful and much needed. The his and her sinks were a great addition. The nespresso maker was great. We hoped we would see some bears on the hill but no such luck. This is a great spot if you’re looking for somewhere classy to stay off of the beaten path. 5 minutes to town and we were thankful we chose to stay at the Josie instead of in town. My only tiny complaint would be they need to figure out a system for letting cars into the underground parking without having to call the front desk. I found that a bit annoying and felt bad for the person working the front desk each time I had to call haha. Perfect for a couples trip! We will be back! Thank you!

Google
Very nice hotel, winter wonderland! Clean, new, comfy, large rooms, nice decor ! No swimming pool, no hot tub though 😕 Underground parking is only for vip members or $15/night. Has restaurant, gym. Enjoyed our stay very much 😊

Yelp
Had the pleasure of staying at the Josie earlier this year on a family (no kiddos on this trip) ski vacation and we absolutely loved it! The staff, amenities and rooms were lovely and perfect for those wanting a true ski in/ski out experience. This was an all adult trip so I cannot speak to their programs for the kiddos but the ski school next door has several I am sure. They have snow shoes and other equipment free for hotel guests if you are interested, we only used their restaurant, room service and concierge services all of which were perfect and well priced. We are hoping to make it back this summer to enjoy this lovely in warmer weather and take advantage of their prime location for hike BC.

Yelp
BEWARE, NEVER STAYING HERE AGAIN! My wife and I had an absolutely horrible stay at the Josie over Valentine's Day. We were here for a ski trip and checked into a one bedroom suite for 4 nights. The bathtub did not work our first night so we called the front desk and they said they would have maintenance look at it. No one ever came, and it still did not work the 2nd day. We again called and the same thing. They said maintenance would come fix it but no one ever came. The 3rd day it still did not work and we again called maintenance. Surprise, no one ever came. We also did not receive housekeeping on our first night. The Saunas do not work so don't waste your time booking them. The stay was so bad we checked out early and moved to a different hotel. Worst of all, the Josie didnt even give a refund for the night we didnt use despite being in a broken room with broken amenities. Ruined our Valentine's Day.

Yelp
Wow! I haven't done a ski in/ski out hotel in a long time and this was totally worth it! The hotel was affordable and dog friendly. The staff was top notch! They were super helpful and accommodating. Everyone was super friendly and they even gave our dog a goodie bag. There were two saunas at the hotel and they give you $20 credits each day for food and drinks. Location, staff, cleanliness, amazing mountain= 10/10! Highly recommend!

Yelp
YELP!! nope. Nope. NOPE. Don't be tricked. I'll admit it...I was. And this folks, is why yelp was created. What you're going to want to do is check and see if Slalom units are available through Red Mountain Resort- those appear to each have individual hot tubs, fire places and oh, are in just as good of a location if not better than The Josie's. I can explain. We stayed 4 nights, thumbs waay down. Disappointing because my family and I were very excited about The Josie's location- the "slope side" room was booked a long time ago and I was confident we picked the nicest spot on the mountain... Then we discovered: -The walls are PAPER thin. Absolutely 0 sound barrier quality, Any activity above or beside you can be heard super easily. Someone who is probably just putting on a pair of boots or using their restroom above us sounds like the entire Toronto Maple Leafs team is practicing. And just wait until the snow plow at 0430 begins clearing the parking lot outside your window that is considered "slope side" lodging, you'll sleep like a colic baby. -The room smells like wet dog, because you know, wet dogs stay here (fair I guess) they're cute, and it's not their fault but the rooms are stuffy with some pretty nasty carpet. - The parking is a joke, I'm still not even sure if I parked where I should have and I don't believe anyone here knows where people should be parking. -Only a couple of rooms in the whole hotel have bathtubs, and those are the suites. -The barrel saunas are pitiful. -I complained to the staff about the noise, requested a higher floor room, or any different location each day I was here- through the phone, in person...they were straight unwilling to work with me on moving rooms. In summary, this is NOT a luxury stay. This is NOT a 4 star hotel. Were there good things? Sure. The restaurant was ok, and it's nice having the ski check in service available. But to be totally transparent- this place is just straight false advertising, it under delivers, over charges- and takes advantage of tourists like me who fell for the trap. But not you I hope!

Yelp
What a treat to stay at the Josie. There were so many personal touches - they knew us by our name after our first valet. Boot warmers for the skiers, quick service with amenities, and every single staff member I'd pass in the hallway greeted me warmly. The rooms are neat and spacious, and you can't beat the location, steps from the base of Red. I just wish there was a hot tub . Can't wait to visit again.

Yelp
Opened to early, came for a wedding and was hoping to sit in a hot tub, which is advertised (spa). The parking is a joke it's basically a gravel pit and if you want to park closer it's an extra charge. I feel bad for older ones. I've never stayed in a place where there isn't ANY kind of breakfast or coffee offered, no delivery places deliver to the location either, so your stuck eating at there restaurant which is whole other issue. It's priced like a five star steakhouse but is no better than your Neighborhood pub, and that's being generous. There is literally 5 options on the menu and the fish dish was not available, I was served a charred well done steak when I ordered a rare. I do not recommend staying here. That's just my opinion I realize they will probably fix most of the problems eventually, but I payed full price and I'm pissed.

Yelp
The Josie hotel was absolutely perfect! A comfortable place to stay while skiing all day. Easy to get a table at the Velvet restaurant, friendly and helpful staff, and nice amenities. You can check your skis, park in a valet garage, and easily reserve a private sauna. Ski in, ski out, amazing food. We will be back soon!

Yelp
I don't know where to start with this place. The service is impeccable--from the valet, concierge, ski valet, management etc. Every detail has been thought of in the design. The bonus for us is the ski valet. We literally walk down to the second floor and they have our boots in boot warmers and bring out our boards for us. Then we board down to the lift. After boarding, we put our boards onto the rack and they bring us our shoes, then we tKe the elevator up to our room. It is so convenient!!!! This is a gorgeous hotel in a beautiful setting. We couldn't have asked for a better place to spend our Christmas holidays. Although there are parts of the hotel that are still under construction, we will most definitely be back. In fact we've already spread the word to our extended family. So I hope you're ready for us!

Yelp
Excellent restaurant- you can walk directly from the base of the Red Mountain ski resort with world class snow and terrain directly into a beautiful high end restaurant with ski check to boot! The sangria was top notch as was the service. Lifts stop at 3:30 but they don't start serving dinner menu until 5:30. We arrived at 4:30 with a hungry 5 year old...they were kind enough to whip up some buttered noodles from the kids menu but our tired son wasn't going to last long enough for us to wait for us to have a grown up dinner and the cocktail hour food menu was pretty slim. We settled on charcuterie which was excellent but not exactly filling. The spa is now open and I can't say enough good things about my massage therapist. Looks like they will be adding an esthetician, mani/pedi services soon. When I was there the "spa" was situated at the end of a hotel hallway and lacked the calm comfy spa atmosphere I was craving but improvements were in the works.

Yelp
I know this place is new - so without question, the property is beautiful - however they have a handful of kinks to work out. 1) Website implies it is fully open - but in reality, the spa has not even been completed. When I booked our stay, I was under the impression there would be a spa to use. I feel somewhat misled and was never offered apology from management, or compensation for paying for a stay that didn't come with advertised amenities available. 2) Packages booked through their website seem to be unknown to the front desk staff. I purchased a 2day lift ticket through the hotel website; however once I checked into the hotel, I had to explain my situation to a staff member each day to get my lift ticket - and there was always questions regarding whether I actually paid for this in advance. I was asked to forward all my emails/proof of payment etc to the ski concierge - I am uncertain why they couldn't get this information from the front desk. 3) Housekeeping - while the staff was very friendly, the turnover was not consistent. 3 of 4 days the cups/glasses in the room were replaced with DIRTier cups/glasses - and often there were items missing. No sugar/sweetener replaced on day 3 and 4 for coffee; "new" coffee mug had crusted food remnants inside. 2/4 days our bar soap was taken; but not replaced. Required finding staff to get new soap for the room. 4) Telephone. My room did not have one - I notified staff from day 1. No response. Day 2 3 4 also notified. No explanation until day 4 - that the phone is room specific and out for repair. Fair amount of inconvenience as cell service is poor; and it made calling down for the car valet, as well as room service more difficult. The management never apologized, or compensated for the inconvenience. 5) Valet parking - service was very good; however I was not informed of the cost until checkout. There is no explanation of parking options or fees on the website; nor did the desk explain it to me. I truly thought this service was included; at checkout I saw the daily $25 fee. Another frustration. On a good note - the staff are all gracious, friendly and helpful. The food was very good. The ski concierge staff/service is excellent. The rooms are modern and comfortable with lots of space and a functional and beautiful layout. I was told a heated pool is in the works for next year.

T M.

Yelp
The adequately appointed rooms unfortunately do not carry water for the management & customer service areas which leave a significant amount to be desired. Imagine the absurdity of it being 10:30am when you're told you cannot order breakfast because the kitchen closes at 11.... Then imagine being reluctantly served after pointing out that 11am wasn't for another 30 minutes? It gets better... They do not hold any dinner reservations for hotel guests or give guests any kind of preferential treatment. "But our party has 12 people in 4 suites here..." "I'm sorry, but we can't accommodate you for dinner." With absolutely no other options to stay mountainside, perhaps the Josie hotel can get away with such disdain for the people who stand between it and financial oblivion.

Yelp
Very comfortable. I grew up in Rossland and never thought a hotel like this would ever be here. Very lovely rooms, quite, well decorated with all the things you need. The attention to the environment is noticeable throughout. Staff are friendly, attentive and accommodating. The pool and spa are not open yet, but the ski hill is right out the front door!. Looking forward to the rest of my stay!.

Yelp
Great room, friendly staff, delicious food, and amazing views! We had an all round wonderful stay. We will definitely be back.

Yelp
I loved my stay at the Josie. The room was extremely comfortable and the location was perfect. I loved that they have a hotel dog! However, your staff is overworked - please hire more people, especially in the Velvet restaurant which appeared chronically understaffed.
