The Best Restaurants in the Lake District, Cumbria - Eater London

"Take a food tour of the world while dining in Grasmere’s joyful and quirky Jumble Room, Andy and Chrissy Hill’s restaurant which they opened in 1996 in what was once a junk room. For mains they offer the likes of siomai dim sum parcels, filled with pork and Morecambe bay shrimps (with a touch of ginger); local lamb rump, rubbed in rose harissa and Persian spices; and Malayan seafood curry, with chunks of fresh fish and Madagascan black tiger prawns, coddled in the restaurant’s spiced Asian broth. Back to Britain for good old fish and chips, a big favourite.  Check out the large paintings downstairs, the jazz photographs upstairs and the album covers in the loos. And for luxury in the Lakes, try the couple’s B&B called Randy Pike (www.randypike.co.uk)." - Christian Dymond

We had a amazing dinner here, our host Emily was so warm and welcoming. There's vegan options on the menu but she also made me some off the menu dishes which were really good. It has a great atmosphere I highly recommend!

This resturant is a gem, where you are made to feel like part of the family the minute you walk through the door. Chrissy is a true artist. Her food and flavours are out of this world. I felt like I had died and gone to heaven. Emily was just as excited about our meals as we were. I absolutely LOVE the Jumble Room and we will be back. Such an awesome awesome treat. Good food, great people and a full dining experience in a setting that is eclectic. This little Gem of a resturant is a must!!!

1st time visit , quite possibly the best meal I’ve ever had . The tiger prawns starter was brilliant, but the Lebanese lamb was next level … my girlfriend’s was also outstanding.. the service was top notch from start to finish … highly recommended

Great restaurant. Best in Grasmere. The food was very different and very well prepared. Lots to try. Many places like this have tiny portions when the food is so well prepared, but not the jumble room. We were totally stuffed after 3 courses. Excellent cocktails to accompany dinner too. The staff who worked there were lovely and very knowledgeable, they all seemed like they loved their jobs. We will be back

The vibes? Immaculate. The food? Incredible. And the service? Impeccable. It’s like having dinner at a good friend‘s place but they happen to be a Michelin star chef. The prices are a shade higher than the surrounding pubs and hotels BUT their quality puts them in a different league. I ate at the top 3 rated places on Google maps and this place deserves the top spot.

We couldn't fault this place. The people and atmosphere make a place. Both are excellent. Jumble Room is quirky and unusual. Staff welcome you like friends and of course the food is beautiful. We visited twice and will definitely head back when we're in the area.

Incredible food, incredible service. I will always come back here as long as this restaurant is in business whenever I visit this area again. The food was exceptional! The specials menu changes regularly which makes it even more special to me to know they source local produce. The flavours in every dish we ordered, were prepared with so much understanding and love for food from all around the world. This place deserves a Michelin Bib recommendation. No fault to anything here. Service was incredible. Super friendly staff who I felt super warmth from (could be because they are family owned? - I’m unsure). Please visit here if you want to go out for dinner.

Yelp
Familiarity can often breed contempt, buyt I would never wish to be contemptuous of this wonderful, unique restaurant. Idiosyncratic, unique, slightly scatty, The Jumble room lives up to its name. Downstairs us all scatter cushions and throws and upstairs is more restrained. Some tables have benches which can be quite romantic depending on who you sit next to. The walls are adorned with rural artwork including several paintings of cows! The toilets are covered with old album covers which makes it hard to leave as you recall what that old David Bowie album actually looked like. The food is I suppose restrained British though with foreign nods. I had the mixed cured meats to start. It was lovely. A rump steak to follow was well hung and tasty. Desert was another great cheeseboard. A fantastic place which I look forward to returning to-but not too often.

Yelp
A gem of a restaurant in the charming and scenic town of Grasmere. Amazing flavors, whimsical and cozy decor and good service. Highly recommend. My wife had an Asian influenced roast chicken that was delicious and I had the lamb tagine that was exotic and tender as can be. For starters I had a delicious pork belly that was equally flavorful. For desert we had a Scottish whiskey cream and berries that was perfect. Combined with a bottle of fine Zinfandel we enjoyed a perfect meal. I hope more visitors discover this restaurant. Truly great food in a charming setting.

Yelp
What a treat!! It is a bit off the beaten path in Grassmere in that one needs to walk a few hundred feet down a largely residential street to find it -- after seeing one small sign pointing that direction, it is well worth it. And it would not take an hour to walk every road in Grassmere, during which wanderings one would certainly notice the tiny sign by the door. We did not have a booking, but receptionist told us at 6 that she could seat us but would need the table back by 8. Nice table settings in a pleasant upstairs room. Very pleasant service throughout. Detailed cocktails list includes "malt whiskeys," so I had to ask -- but was very pleased that they had Glen Morangie. We shared some artichoke hearts to start -- they were large and succulent. Paid 3 pounds for bread, which was well worth it. My wife ordered "Thriller from Manila," a noodle-based dish with chicken, broccoli and other veggies -- nicely done although she said it was pretty spicy. I had a chicken Tiboku (probably have that name wrong) that was wonderful, served on a bed of rice. Chicken breast was served whole but had been pre-sliced, which made it easy to eat. Portions seemed huge to us--we did not finish -- but we had to try a dessert. We chose a mousse that sounded lighter than other items but that was actually huge and elegant. We did finish that. Seating was mostly along a banquette along the wall, close to others. I do not generally like that and try to ignore other diners, but we wound up chatting with folks on both sides. With one couple we just chatted about the food and dessert. The foursome on the other side were here for a car show. The father is showing a Bristol, something new to me -- but really prefers the 10 Bentleys and Rolls Royces that he has at home (we pried this out of him -- he was not bragging). Son-in-law is showing another car that I did not recognize but drives a Tesla to work but is thinking about getting an electric BMW for that purpose. They were fund and interesting -- and we will definitely get to the car show.

Yelp
Okay, it has been about a year and a half since my husband and I ate dinner here, so I may have forgotten some of the details. But I'll tell you the things that really stood out. I had the lamb that was one of the specials that night. It was very good. The highlight of the evening and what has really stayed with me is the dessert we had. It was sticky toffee pudding with custard sauce. I can't begin to tell you how delicious this was. I wanted to go back the next night and just get this for dessert, but I doubted we could get reservations. If I ever find myself in the Lake District again this restaurant will be at the top of my list to eat at.
