Topgolf, a Massive Sports Bar and Golfer’s Paradise, Comes to Los Angeles | Eater LA

"The City of El Segundo hopes to transform its public municipal golf course, The Lakes, into a new Topgolf location sometime next year; Topgolf would manage the driving range while Billy Casper Golf rehabilitates the actual nine-hole course and adds lights to allow for evening golf. The project includes a reported $40 million investment by Topgolf into the publicly owned property and about $38 million in rent payments over the next 20 years." - Matthew Kang

SerpAPI
Super fun and fairly easy course perfect for a quick ten-hole round. The holes are wide open and pretty forgiving, though there are some sand traps and a couple lakes (obviously). You don't have to be very experienced at all to have a good time here - you can even borrow some Top Golf clubs for free. Don't come expecting a formal or stuffy atmosphere. There is a bumping playlist playing over the speakers and humorous signs posted throughout the course. It's a great time! The only downside is it's more expensive than municipal 9-hole courses.

Service at front desk and Bar needs help, training. The service once you get to your assigned "area" was awesome. Top Golf is super fun place to celebrate a birthday. Top Golf is NOT just for golfers and is a great way to learn to love the sport ..

SerpAPI
Awesome place to go and enjoy meals and Funtime with family, friends, and coworkers. Clean and workers are helpful and friendly. It's like bowling but you aim at target 50 to 200 yds away. Food and drinks are pricey but do it in special occasions. The clubs are available and new so no need to bring your own clubs.

The Lakes at El Segundo is a Top Golf experience. It is like a multilevel extreme sports bar. It feels like a mix of mini-golf and bowling. I had heard a lot of talk about Top Golf so that when my friend asked me to celebrate his 60th birthday party at The Lakes in El Segundo, I was one of the first guests to arrive. It's an over-the-top experience; The Lakes has the largest big screen monitor I had ever seen indoors. The best part is the opportunity to hit a micro-chipped golf ball from an elevated perspective; It's like hitting a golf ball off the roof of a high-rise building. It took a little while to figure out the scoring process. I enjoyed the experience. The staff is energetic and responsive. The food service was a little off, but the fun-filled atmosphere was a good experience overall. I recommend you to go at least once for the adventure.

SerpAPI
World-class practice facility complete with 10 hole golf course complete with TopTracer technology on the final hole. Food and drink were high quality and fairly priced. Service was next level. Apparel and golf accessories were fairly priced too. I look forward to going back soon.

SerpAPI
Probably one of the funnest courses I’ve done that wasn’t an 18 hole. Feels like an arcade, with top 10 music in the background. Feels like arcade golf. The course has a great flow, not too challenging and not too easy, it’s just right, and perfect transition to the range side. There’s an option for push carts and there’s a nice bar/restaurant too. Great part is a free putting and chipping practice area. Lots of spots for photo/selfies. It was three of us and it was great times, hit par a couple times and overall excellent experience! The last hole records your shot and it’s the best!

Had a wonderful experience at Top Golf here. Our flight didn’t leave till late so we burned off some energy by playing several rounds. Service was amazing. 10/10 would recommend. We’ll certainly be back.

Course conditions are just about perfect. Reg good greens and fun design. The lights are really good and light up the course nicely.

Yelp
Overpriced 10 hole par 3 that's part of Top Golf. It's $25 Monday through Thursday and $32 Friday-Sunday for not so great conditions. It was cool to play night golf but conditions were not that great---There was goose poop on over half of the greens and a few holes were not well lit at all. Also, there's divot marks over all the greens. I also didn't like that there were several holes that were only 50-70 yards long. You also tee off on range mats. If you want to practice your short game or you are a beginner I would consider other par 3 courses like Alondra, Maggie Hathaway, or Heartwell.

Yelp
I truly enjoyed myself playing a round of golf there. It has been years since I played here after moving to Hawaii. I actually learned to play golf here at their range, some thirty or more years ago. Top Golf has really made it nice. Definitely coming back when I'm in town. Only suggestion is to possibly hand out Divot Tools, and encourage the repairing of ball marks. I usually repair mine, and at least two others. Just a suggestion to keep the green in good shape.

Yelp
Been here a few times over the years. It's definitely changed since Top Golf came. It's well kept but it feels like the holes have gotten even more shorter. Still enjoyable. Shouldn't take you more than an hour to finish the 10 or 11 holes.

Yelp
We've been taking lessons from Sebastian for six weeks. We are complete beginners and have really enjoyed the lessons with Sebastian. He's very patient and explains everything clearly. He knows how to teach and makes the lesson fun. The facilities (Top Golf and The Lakes) are very nice. Overall, we've had a great experience with Sebastian and learning how to play.

Yelp
Highly recommend this place for amateur golfers. Nice way to practice on this small course before you head to a large course. Great layout. I will be going back again very soon.

Yelp
Love this place . I come here for practice at night time . Open late . Great putting practice area as well for pitching. There is a bar inside which is great. Course is really neat too. Small but challenging enough.
google avatar

Khoa D.

Yelp
This golf course offers 10 challenging holes, and they maintain it exceptionally well, resulting in a clean and fresh layout. The turf at the beginning of each hole is of good quality for your first shot. The regular price is $32, but you might find online deals around $25. They do not offer parts here so it's all walking golfers. The staff is friendly, and I highly recommend trying this place. It was my first time here, and I'll definitely be back for more rounds.

Yelp
My first time golfing. I had a blast and having an 8am reservation was great because I didn't feel rushed with groups behind us. It was a nice, bright day and I enjoyed that the holes were named. Glove he got me was too small unfortunately because misplaced in the mart and marked my hands. I used the same ball the entire time, which means I didn't lose one in the water!

Yelp
I have never golfed on a course before, so this was my very first experience. As a beginner in golf, I can say this course provides a great experience and a lot of fun without the pressure of feeling fraudulent LOL. If you've ever been to Top Golf, Imagine the same vibe but on a course. The lakes features a par 3 course ( 3 swings per course *if you have aim) and has 10 holes. The courses are beginner friendly and there features a lake that will take a few balls from you if you're learning LOL. They offer complementary carts for your golf bags and a complementary set of clubs if you do not have your own. They have a full bar in the front and you can order food from the Top Golf menu. The food is just ok, the appetizers vary from wings to flatbreads. I usually go for the Mac N Cheese Bites. You can take your liquor on the course with you and the dress code is relaxed. If you're looking to get the golf bug like me, check this place out. I already made reservations to return, brought myself a golf glove and some polos. They Got Me!

Yelp
I don't know why this is my least favorite par 3. It could be that it's next to top golf being obnoxiously huge, next to the busy street separated by huge, chain link fence that made it less aesthetically pleasing or maybe it's the lakes in it that I keep hitting my balls into. The night golfing, however, makes up for all that. Not to mention the huge number signs placed strategically on each hole so that you couldn't miss it unless you were blind.

Yelp
Great friendly course for all levels! It's well-maintained and they offer good deals. They are also flexible and I've been able to get tee times pretty easily! I've played here 5+ times now and I love it every time. Their fairways are wide for a par 3 so it's easy to find your golf balls as well. Highly recommend!!

Yelp
We've been coming out here since it re-opened as The Lakes at El Segundo by Top Golf and it's AMAZING! Incredible putting green and practice facilities and the course is super fun. We've been coming 2-3 times a week and built a great relationship with the staff. They are always beyond friendly, helpful and make each experience as fun and enjoyable as it can be. Can't recommend this place enough for any level of golfer!

Yelp
Nice course, it's well taken care of. Very nice folks work there, they care about their golf course and store.

Yelp
Had a awful experience with the manager today, last name Chang. I don't live close to the el segundo location, however take the time to travel out to this location for the nice weather and cool features of the course. Will not be returning!!! Accidentally left a club which I know is on me, however spent 4 hours yesterday calling the shop trying to see if the club was left behind. Today I drove out and got the club and asked to speak with the manager. Dude was incredibly unpleasant and just continued to repeat what do you want out of this. I simply said all I would like is an apology. I wasn't looking for compensation, just wanted a genuine apology for spending 4 hours on the phone trying to get into contact with the place. He gave me a dirty look and said sorry. I told him I felt the apology was very disingenuous. He then asked me again what do you want from this, and that there was nothing that he could do for me. I then repeated all I was looking for was a genuine apology. He then responded I just apologized. I explained to him I shouldn't have to ask for an apology in this situation. You are the general manager in a service industry. This is after I tried to ignore the fact that the last time I went to top golf there was human fecal matter on the floor!!! My brother made a post of this on the top golf Yelp. So unfortunate as they have great facilities but clearly they need a new manager that knows how to take care of loyal customers. I have played this course 20 times in last year. Tee times are 36 dollars for par 3 10 hole.... Absolutely shocked and disgusted!

Yelp
This par 3 course is just what I needed to help get me into golf. As a newbie on a budget, and not wanting to look like a fool, I think this space was what I needed to get me started. I love how the staff is super helpful and ready to answer any of my questions, and the course, let's talk about the course. This par 3 course is excellent for practicing your short game, I think it's nicely designed where there's enough forgiveness to save you from always hitting a bunker, but not enough to call you out. I love how two of the holes have lakes, again, it helps with that reality check. The pace here is not bad, but speaking for myself, I always feel like I'm being slow. Overall though, if you're getting into golf, this spot is welcoming and has music playing throughout the course, which for me is an added bonus. They have several holes to practice your putting, which can be the most stressful thing about coming. For this, I would try to see when they'll have events or things of that nature, to avoid being that evil adult who's now putting where kids want to putt. The chipping area is popular, so just be mindful of that. The practice bunker is huge, I feel like it's bigger than the actual bunkers on the course, which is pretty cool considering that I now always have the expectation for bunkers to be huge - better for me when they're not though. So whether you're looking to practice your short game and use those irons and wedges, or you're completely new and bought a set with a bunch of clubs that are useless on this course, this spot is solid.

Yelp
This place is a very nice place. For the price they charge, you are literally paying to play on feeces (shit) ... I get it there are geese here but every single hole is full of TONS of dropping on the greens and not just a little but a lot. I can Payless for 18 holes without the feeces. It's a shame that such a nice place, and they dont attempt to at least remove it from the greens. Don't see myself coming back here for that reason when I have other options for less and honestly cleaner
google avatar

Kane M.

Yelp
First of all the Southbay doesn't have any decent practice areas now that's changed! The 10 hole is perfect to work on the short game, there's a great putting greens and a chipping area with a sand trap. The best part is using TopGolf's range without the electronics as a driving range before 10am. Golfers ‍ enjoy our new course!

Stefani P.

Yelp
Had such a fun time at this course. It is ran by TOPGOLF. It is beginner friendly. Highly recommend this course for anyone wanting to learn. Also has a chipping and putting green. The grass is just okay but for the price you can't beat it.

Yelp
I thought this was going to be a family-oriented place but after being harassed by top golf staff who were playing the course, I realized otherwise. Our 4th had to bring his 10 year old kid who was putting along side our group to keep him busy. A 50ish overweight white guy with his coveted top golf polo, actually came up to the child and I, thinking I was his parent. He tried to lecture me on the kid being part of our group. Naturally, the child felt like he was in trouble and the rest of the day shutdown. This could have been handled better. No need to bully a kid. This isn't St. Andrews or Augusta. Additional negative stars for unavailable driving range to warm up and overpriced fees.

Yelp
This place was a classic. Great rates for mil! Appreciate what you guys did. The future cannot be held back!

Dawn H.

Yelp
I booked this online which charged me a $3 booking fee. The price listed on the internet was $25 which I thought was high but I still wanted to try this out. Then I drove 45 minutes. When I went to check in I was told the price was $32. Some sort of bait and switch scheme here. Since I had driven so far, I decided to suck it up. The employee told me the price in the internet was wrong but he should have honored it. Then he said they had "Top Tracer" . The course is nice as are the facilities but this is totally overpriced for a 10 hole Par 3 course. The $35 total is about the same as afternoon rates at City courses that are full courses. The Top Tracer is only on the last hole. It's cool but It would be hard for me to recommend this at this price.
google avatar

Mike B.

Yelp
Absolutely terrible. Staff was very unfriendly. After playing the 10 hole course twice(charged full price for a replay) we got a hitting bay, the (waitress) hovered over our table the entire time. About 5 min after we paid our bill we were asked to leave because our hitting bay had been booked even though there was about 20-30 empty bays. Very unwelcoming experience.

Jacob M.

Yelp
The quality of this course has plummeted since its opening. The mats are full of dust and have no traction. Surprisingly the course care at Alondra Park is better than this
google avatar

Juan F.

Yelp
My first time at a driving range and it was pretty fun. For $10 you get a large bucket of golf balls which lasts you a good hour. If you check in on Yelp you get a free small bucket too. The driving range is clean and well kept and people are pretty courteous. Good was to relieve some stress for sure.
google avatar

Rob A.

Yelp
Nice small 9 hole course, good for a work afternoon "offsite" meeting or group outing. Work the morning, have lunch, play a quick Nine and be home for an early dinner. Better yet, you better go exercise first because you probably didn't burn enough calories on the course. Located adjacent to the big Raytheon campus, this location is easy to get in and out of off Sepulveda. Lots of parking. We've had a few going away luncheons on the outside patio, fitting quite a few people comfortably. The food's not bad either. The driving range has a two level tee area with 58 hitting stalls. There's a large natural grass putting green and chipping pitching area. Not bad for a municipal course.

Yelp
For someone still working on his/her golf game, The Lakes is a great place to improve. It is a golf facility, with a driving range, pro shop, and a fun 9 hole, pitch n' putt golf course. 1) The driving range has about 50-60 stalls, fairly well maintained, with upper and lower levels. The range balls are mostly in good shape, and they also have flags established at various distances. The maximum driving range distance plays to about 250 yards, which is plenty far for me. NOTE: Use Yelp check-in and you will get a free small bucket with the purchase of a large bucket ($8). 2) The Par 3 Course at the Lakes is fun. You will get public course hackers, kids, and folks playing in larger groups. The greens were in good condition when I played, and there are two par 4 holes, and the remaining 7 holes are par 3, so par 29 for the course. You can bring your own beverages, so drink a beer, or otherwise, and have a good time.
google avatar

Yelp
Just played the Lakes and I realize with COVID going on..but the fact that we had to pay walking and dodging duck shit is ridiculous!!!! Sorry Lakes!

Matthew L.

Yelp
Fun course but the older guy working in the shop was a real bummer to deal with. Guy was real inconvenienced when we asked if we could use the restroom on our way out - 30 min before closing. He huffed and puffed at us, didn't say a word and walked off. Why work in a customer service role if you hate your customers.
google avatar

Yeret G.

Yelp
Pretty small golf course, but great for beginners, like me , make you take some waters and a hat ! Really nice place easy parking friendly staff, easy to get around make sure you rent a cart , they don't have golf carts so you will be carrying you golf set everywhere

Jerome S.

Yelp
Most fun we've ever had playing a par 3 course. My girlfriend is a relative beginner and we had the best time playing the par 3 course. The staff, especially Randall, Luke and Lisa, are 5 star. We'll definitely be back.
google avatar

Jenn C.

Yelp
I came here around 2pm or so on a Sunday with my boyfriend and his little 9yr old Addie. We paid around $10 for 100 balls (big bucket) and we borrowed 2x adult and 1x kids left handed club to use at the driving range. The staff member who served us was friendly and helpful and we were happy with the driving range / facilities. My only wish was that we were allowed to borrow drivers instead of the clubs in the rental bag. We will probably come back here if we are in the mood again :)

Yelp
I've passed this course many times over the years and finally stopped in. I thought it was so nice! I've been to many courses- Los Verdes, Rolling Hills CC, Trump, Alondra, Dominguez, and this is the PERFECT midline. I thought it was really nice without having to drive up the hill. The driving range has a top and bottom, in case you are trying to get out of the sun, and a big putting area. They have a pro shop (duh) and a restaurant. There's beautiful outdoor seating area with some nice big ponds and view of the last couple holes. You can also play (and pay yearly dues which aren't that bad!) to be part of the Men/Women's Club. I believe it's $10 for a Large Bucket. TIP: If you check-in on Yelp then and buy a Large you get a Free Small Bucket. Looking forward to coming more often!

Yelp
Well, just called to get some information about setting a tee time....I don't want to go into details....just an real a-hole with no customer service brain cells working there...

Yelp
This review is for the Lakes' golf pro Aubrey Shaw. We couldn't be happier with him. Knowledgeable, professional, fun. The lesson was for my 7 year old daughter. But we got there early enough and stayed after and saw his interaction with other golfers. He was very insightful and straight to the point. Highly recommend this guy for a novice just learning the game all the way to a seasoned player looking to tweak their swing.
google avatar

Steve W.

Yelp
This is a fun, easy-going non-intimidating 9-hole course for any skill level. It's got a few challenges (hitting over water), but nothing too demanding. The staff are nice, getting a reservation is easy, and they have a decent practice range and putting green. You can also eat at an above average restaurant, hang out on the patio, and watch the many geese fly around. The geese are really the only issue-- actually, the geese dung, which is prevalent throughout the course. So watch your step. The prices are affordable and if you're a resident of El Segundo, you get a discount. A great place to take friends or family; or to learn.
google avatar

Lynn W.

Yelp
Sorely under maintained. Used to play here every week. Ever since Top Golf was set to take over this course it is filthy. The city of El Segundo is not maintaining their course. Today every hole was filled with goose poop. Divots all over. The fairways filled with goose poop. Finished with shoes and cart wheels covered with excrement. The air hose is rarely on. I can no longer play here. Pretty sad.
google avatar

Nishad J.

Yelp
The driving range at this place is very nice. It's massive, multi floor, and well maintained. Great place to hit some balls on a Sunday evening. It is also very reasonably priced. For a similar range in northern California, I usually pay double the money for a lesser range. When sunset comes around the range looks especially beautiful.
google avatar

Joan S.

Yelp
Cute little public course with a short 9 holes. It's not boringly flat....there are knolls (I love knolls) and lots of water features, including geyser-type fountains. It's called The Lakes, duh.... There is a: - Pro Shop. It was open today, Sunday. - Putting green. - Sand trap next to the putting green, just for practice. - Driving range. - Lot with plenty 'o parking & beautiful landscaping everywhere on the grounds. - Cafe with outdoor seating next to a pond with a waterfall. They are now serving Sunday brunch in the restaurant from 9 till 2. Brunch is only 15 bucks, or get a package deal of golf & brunch for $25. That's cheap! I shoulda checked out the brunch. Expect nice coolish temps here because it's located close to the beach. This is a great little facility with much to offer and it was crowded today. I added 11 photos to the ones already posted to the listing. Now that the review is done, I feel a brief story coming on......haha.... : My parents were avid golfers when I was growing up. I was a golf orphan, haha. Actually, they dragged me with them much of the time. I learned a lot about golf, mostly that I hate it. But I do like hitting balls at driving ranges, go figure.
google avatar

Mike L.

Yelp
The course is really beat up all the way around. Divots all over greens with goose poop all over the place. Bunkers don't look like they've been raked in months. Tee boxes are beat to hell and uneven. Overall one of the worst course I've played in a while. Course needs TLC BADLY.
google avatar

Richie W.

Yelp
The lakes at El Segundo?... More like the pond at El Segundo. There are two small ponds on the whole course which come into play on about 3 holes. The course is a small 9 hole par 3 golf course with x2 260 yard par 4's. It is well maintained, a lot better than the average muni course. The course is nice, but not as good as the Marriott which is a couple of blocks down the street. Also at $18 it seems a little high for what you get. I also did not appreciate the ground staff cutting holes in the green when we were in the middle of playing the hole. One of my playing partners could not put as the hole and dirt was in his putting line.
google avatar

Emilio M.

Yelp
Ive never actually played all 18 holes here. Just come over to hit some balls on the practice field. The course looks great however and very inviting. Plus the staff is very friendly and professional. Ill be sure to follow up with a more thorough review next time. But if all you want to do is work on your swing or putting, stop by The Lakes at Gundo for some R&R.

Yelp
Another informational update - the driving range at El Segundo is currently closed for renovations. It's supposed to reopen within a week of this posting. I came here thinking I would get in some practice, since Westchester Golf driving range is closed. I struck out here also. The practice putting green is nice and large. There is also a practice sand trap that includes a small landing green and area to practice your flop shots. Parking is plentiful with nice large spots - this is not a common thing for most public courses. I've played here previously a few years ago when it first opened. I'm gonna have to give an update if and when I play it again. From what I remember, this course is not very challenging. The par 4 #1 and par 4 #9 can be played teeing off with a long iron. Keep that 460cc driver in the bag, and sharpen your iron play for the 9 holes - par 29 course.

Yelp
Ok I am not exactly a golf expert, matter of fact my whole golf experience comprises of one hour one night at this driving range and the next day playing best ball with teams of four with a shotgun start with my company. What I can say is that the course is located 1 mile South of LAX and it is a 9-hole course so I think it would be the perfect place for a business traveler that is staying near the airport and does not have the time to play a full course or for someone that has a very long lay-over can hop into a taxi and play a few holes on one of our bright sunny days (a nice way to break up a day of travel). The staff is very nice at the pro-shop. They allowed me to borrow several clubs (they seemed brand new) without a deposit or leaving my ID. I had a blast and I did not do too bad for a first timer. Update June 13, 07 Had my yearly company golf tournament yesterday and I sucked this year. www.golfthelakes.com

Yelp
The Lakes is a multi-use local golf facility... 1) Driving range w/ about 50-60 stalls, well maintained, with upper and lower levels. I've never gone here and not gotten a stall. Sometimes there are no rubber tees for hitting woods, but I carry one in my bag, so goody for me. The range balls are mostly in good shape, and aside from some noisy patrons on their phones it is a good place to work on your game. NOTE: If you are going to hit balls regularly, go inside and get a range card, because it is the best deal. You get "more money" on your card when you buy buckets in bulk. I usually get my whole month up front, and it saves time and money. 2) The Par 3 Course at the Lakes is interesting, if not somewhat enjoyable. You will get public course hackers, kids, folks playing in larger groups, and a few rude people here and there....but hey, its a public course...no one is a freakin' pro, so get over it. Any day on the golf course (even a lousy one) beats a day behind my desk, fighting traffic, or getting mauled by a bear. So suck it up, drink a beer, and laugh with your buddies...most likely you stink at golf too...because if you were THAT good, you'd be playing the Trump course with some big shot real estate mogul not the Lakes. 3) Golf is about having fun, being accessible to everyone, and constantly finding ways to improve your game. You can do all the above at the Lakes, so when you go to one of the expensive, posh courses around LA...you can shoot better and appreciate it. Swing away...!

Yelp
I love playing at this course. Yes it pretty damn short, but its still great. As for as executive short courses go, this one is among the best. THey keep this place in tip top shape, and even allow lots of birds/animals to chill there. I saw a fox kick it around the 9th hole the last time i played. Animals are cool. nice place to get a quick game with some friends on weekend or weekday. Pho Shizzle.

Yelp
I play this course almost everyday during the weekday and its a really good practice course to hone your short game. They have 2 par 4's and 1 long par 3 else everything else is under 100. During the weekdays we can finish 9 holes in about 1 1/2 hours. The best thing about playing here is that you can get a monthly unlimited golf for only $50 (m-f) ... but dont tell anyone this :)

Yelp
Their driving range doesn't have a lot of spots so sometimes you have to wait. Also, it isn't shaded. There are no golf ball machines on this range, but it only takes a minute to bring them over. Their range is nice and green. More importantly their executive course is beautiful. Their lakes and sandpits makes things more interesting. I love their lady's tee. Until I improve, I'm grateful for it!

Yelp
The Lakes is one of the best executive courses in Southern California. The course itself is not too small for an executive course. The size of the course also works out well for those who cannot complete a full-size course. The city maintains the course, equipment, and facilities very diligently. We have held yearly memorial tournaments here for the past six years. The Lakes gives us a great deal, and the staff is awesome. Great value and scenery!
