Why Unadulterated Date Palm Jaggery Is in Danger of Extinction | Eater

"A high-profile hotel kitchen where chefs have adapted nolen gur into both traditional and Western-style desserts; the culinary team features the seasonal sweetener in items such as nolen gur–flavored ice cream and in reinterpretations like caramel custard, tembleque, and pastries, showcasing its aromatic, smoky sweetness in upscale preparations." - Tania Banerjee

The hotel is great, the breakfast options and masala tea is also great. The staff are very friendly and the door greeters are also doing a good job. One issue to address is that, for a five star hotel, the rooms are not up to the standard. You could clearly see that the showers have dirt in the edges, the toilet seats are also old and started to wear off. Even in the breakfast area, you can see there's dirt built up on the edges of the wall. The hotel staff and food is good, but the rooms need better cleanliness and maintenance.

Stayed at the hotel mid-November for a family wedding. The quality of the rooms were poor as the room smelled of mould and the furniture also looked worn off. We asked them to do something about it (smell) and whilst they tired, it didn’t work. My wife is asthmatic and we requested to change our room. The new room was better, however, some mould smell still persisted. The hotel is situated in a historic and busy part of the city, hence, don’t expect to see great views from the rooms. Food quality was average. Although we just ate breakfast there. Service was good and all the staff were very courteous.

Terrible show on December 31st night, complete rip off, their managers had no idea of what's going on and were rude to the patrons. After spending so much of money it was just not worth it. Managers were engaging only when the GM was seen in the lobby. I understand that the managers were upset working that night but that's what they chose to do for a career. The tickets I bought was a complete misinformation. None of the staff knew what they were doing, it was a fiasco and chaos. I think managers and staff need detailed training especially hosting events. Not least to say, there was no welcome by the staff at the front desk either. BAD SHOW AND A COMPLETE WASTE OF TIME AND MONEY. I WILL NOT RECOMMEND THIS HOTEL, KOLKATA DEFINITELY HAS BETTER OPTIONS. DO NOT GO TO EVENTS AT LALIT, FALSE ADVERTISEMENT. THE GENERAL MANAGER SHOULD GET INVOLVED IN TRAINING MANAGERS, THEY HAVE A BAD ATTITUDE AND A TERRIBLE DEMEANOR. GIVE THEM SOME TRAINING CLASSES IF YOU WANT YOUR HOTEL PROPERTY TO BE SUCCESSFUL.

An absolutely outstanding stay at The Lalit Great Eastern. From the moment I arrived, the service was impeccable — warm, attentive, and genuinely thoughtful. I was pleasantly surprised with a complimentary upgrade, which truly elevated the entire experience. The staff went above and beyond at every touchpoint, always polite, accommodating, and eager to help with a smile. The food deserves a special mention — every meal was a delight, both in quality and presentation. It perfectly complemented the grandeur and heritage of the hotel. Overall, The Lalit Great Eastern delivers a seamless blend of luxury, comfort, and exceptional hospitality. I would highly recommend this hotel to anyone looking for a memorable and refined stay, and I wouldn’t hesitate to return.

My family and I recently stayed in the LaLit Great Eastern Hotel whilst visiting Kolkata holiday. The hotel itself is clean and well maintained. It is well serviced by a great dining room, pool and spa, and the rooms we stayed in are reasonably spacious. The hotel was well positioned for our sightseeing and was close to Mother Teresa's tomb, the Victoria Memorial and shopping at Park street. The staff at the hotel were excellent. Very professional and attentive. Special mention for Amjad and Rajib who both worked in the dining room for their warm and friendly approach and the relationship they developed with my grandkids. Overall a very pleasurable stay.

Systematic exploitation and mugging of the guests: I went there at the end of the Nov 2025 for a marriage where we had 22 rooms booked. There were 2 marriages at that venue and the staff had the list of all the guests arriving. Problems: They clearly knew about the number of people arriving for the marriages. Yet they quoted that rooms were booked for individuals with a malicious intention of adding charges for the extra guests in those rooms. Breakfast- it was supposed to be complementary for the rooms booked a day before. Again with malicious intent they charged us for the bf even though I clarified that maybe we’ve arrived today, but our bookings were from the last day. Yet they printed a bill which they would have used to stick on the bride and groom’s family receipt. All happened in coordination where restaurant managers were aligned with the hotel manager. It was after the moral lesson I provided, they had to nullify the bill. But, it is still unknown that how many people they’d still have charged like this where the people would have not nullified the bill and the bride/groom have to pay for it Rooms: 1. pretty basic. I stayed in 2 different rooms and both had terrible bathroom sinks. 2. One-of the rooms had smart TV which was not even HD. The other had a non smart outdated television model which did not even support wifi. It’s better you show up with your equipments if you are planning even a subtle party. 3. We asked for extra bed which they brought on some time. But, the way they adjusted was totally unprofessional. A night before I stayed in Nataraj Hotel in Tata Nagar and they same support in a super way Service: irresponsive most of the times. To get water or other chores we had to make multiple calls. Maybe they would say that they were dealing with huge number of guests, but i think it’s a basic requirement to get a decent unbothered service in a 5 star Pros: it’s LaLit at the end of the day. Beautiful interiors, extremely good materials used, aesthetic Expectations: There is a systematic exploitation going on there using human behavioural pattern. They use the awkwardness of people going in a 5 star to manipulate them. People going to marry there should be cautious. You won’t even know that when your already highly priced booking has become more Staffs seem to have been trained to mug people. I think they should be trained in an alternative way

It is rare that you stay in a hotel that manage to get everything right, but this one is pretty much bang on. The room was large, airy, and beautiful, we had both firm and soft pillows, the noise from outside stayed outside. Breakfast was amazing, not only in it's range, but the quality of the food and the generous attentive staff team. I really cannot think of any aspect of the hotel that can be improved, the domestic staff were delightful, everyone was friendly and attentive, yet professional. Well done!!
