"An ideally located restaurant for culture lovers, The Lavery sits on the first floor of a complex of art galleries inside some handsome South Kensington townhouses. Just a stone’s throw away, you’ll find the Victoria & Albert Museum, Science Museum and Natural History Museum. Once you’ve nourished mind and soul, nourish the body with the kitchen’s brand of Mediterranean cuisine fused with British ingredients. Expect the likes of ricotta-filled nettle tortelli with cultured butter and pine nuts, executed with an understated simplicity and no little skill." - Michelin Inspector

The Lavery - Review - Kensington - London - The Infatuation

"Dinner at The Lavery is a very civilised way to round off a day spent impressing out-of-towners with London’s cultural hot spots. And by hot spots, we obviously mean Hope, the blue whale skeleton at the Natural History Museum. The dining room at this South Kensington, European-leaning restaurant looks like somewhere a debutante would be introduced to high society—all stuccoed ceilings, marble fireplaces, and huge gold mirrors. And eating a plate of artichoke ratatouille here will make you feel as smug as your period drama alter ego with a full dance card. photo credit: Henry Bourne photo credit: Henry Bourne In this pristine, lofty room, seasonal plates of things like asparagus and parmesan fonduta are forked at by couples on dates. Small groups celebrate low-key special occasions with loquat and hazelnut tarts; we imagine Tottenham cakes are turned away at the door like poor relations. While the dishes don’t wow (the room handles that side of things), they're dependably tasty and elegant. Food Rundown Asparagus, Fonduta And Parmesan We like vegetables best when they’re sitting in a silky puddle of melted parmesan and rich egg yolks—The Lavery clearly does too. This asparagus—still with a bit of bite, slightly sweet—pairs well with the buttery sauce. photo credit: Sinéad Cranna Gnocchi Di Patate, Fresh Peas, Hen Of The Woods And Ricotta Salata Probably some of the lightest, airiest gnocchi we’ve ever had. Food being described as ‘melting in the mouth’ is eye roll-inducing, but warranted here. The fresh peas are lovely and sweet, but the mushrooms are a little bland and forgettable. photo credit: Sinéad Cranna Slow Cooked Lamb Neck, Swiss Chard, And Olives This dish is the sort of thing a very competent home cook, who’s read a lot of Delia Smith, would serve at a dinner party. The lamb neck is tender, and the sauce is thick and has some tang from the olives. But we prefer the pork and would order that over this. photo credit: Sinéad Cranna Hampshire Duroc Pork Chop, Endive, Dijon And Parsely The sauce that comes with this hefty, juicy pork chop joins that elite category of sauces that ‘completely make a dish’. The dijon adds a subtle wink of heat, there’s the merest suggestion of lemon to balance all the cream, and the texture is velvety smooth. photo credit: Sinéad Cranna Pomelo And Passion Fruit ‘Lavery Mess’ A dessert that’s good in the way that cream, sweet swirls of passion fruit, and slightly bitter pomelo will always be good. But it’s not very memorable. photo credit: Sinéad Cranna" - Sinéad Cranna

London’s New Restaurant Openings

"The grand, stuccoed room that was once Cromwell Place Café—a.k.a. our favourite place to feel like a minor royal in South Kensington—is now a Mediterranean restaurant with a hefty team of Rochelle Canteen, River Café, and Toklas alumni behind it. There’s a cafe on the ground floor coming later in the year." - team infatuation

Drawn in by its high rating, I visited out of curiosity; to be frank, this is not a restaurant that works with ordinary ingredients. While the flavours were acceptable, they were entirely unremarkable—very plain, approachable dishes with no distinctive character—yet both the coffee and the main course were served noticeably cold, despite the restaurant not being particularly busy. Out of concern, I touched the plate and found that it had not been warmed at all, which was deeply disappointing, as the dishes would undoubtedly have been far more enjoyable had they been served at the proper temperature. The staff’s service and politeness were neither excessive nor lacking—simply adequate—and I rather liked their crisp white uniforms. The restaurant itself has high ceilings and a French-style interior that I personally enjoy, which led me to expect much from the facilities; however, upon visiting the restroom, I was taken aback by how starkly it contrasted with the dining area—regrettably shabby, with frosted film on large windows that made me uncomfortably aware of my silhouette from outside, and with standards of cleanliness and upkeep that were distinctly poor. Perhaps it was the 4.9 rating that raised my expectations too high, but the overall sense of disappointment was considerable.

Some dishes are good. No bad dishes. Services are excellent. We like the chive soup and Guinea Fowl. My partner enjoyed the entire meal very much though.

Very fresh, tasty food. The squid and the sea bass crudo starters were delicious and for the mains, the lemon sole and the trout were really delicious. The photos show the lemon tart and the chocolate mousse half demolished. Service was very friendly and unpretentious in a spacious dining room full of character. We will come back. A great choice for a special occasion.

The Lavery received glowing reviews from a few credible sources shortly after opening. I live locally and thought it had to be checked out. It’s a nicely done up space and was busy but not full on the Saturday evening we visited. We were 2 adults and 2 young kids and between us ordered the focaccia, asparagus, melon & courgette and grilled squid to start, followed by the lobster linguine, monkfish and veal chop for mains. For dessert we tried the chocolate mousse and the almond tart. The food was very nice. Simple and wholesome but very flavourful too. The kids loved the linguine and shared a second portion of this. The asparagus came with a very nice sauce and the veal chop was perfectly cooked. On the negative side the focaccia was served cold and felt a bit stale, the melon starter divided opinions, and I felt the chocolate mousse would have been better without the olive oil (still very nice though). I also enjoyed a few picks from their wide selection of wines by the glass. Service was very friendly and our primary server did make an effort to engage with our kids which was appreciated. The meal moved along at a decent pace. That said, in London nowadays you either get a small table or a tiny table, and this was definitely the latter! Lots of plate juggling was required. I was also slightly peeved that my request for one of their 4 corner tables (with banquette seating) that was mentioned in my booking notes and then again upon arrival was not honoured, even though 2 of those tables remained unoccupied throughout our entire meal. The bill for our dinner came to £350 of which £65 was spent on drinks. In conclusion, very nice food in an elegant setting with friendly service, but there were a couple of niggles and it did feel a bit overpriced. The positives outweighed the negatives though and I would return.

I don't even know where to start... The restaurant is astonishing from all angles. Dining at The Lavery isn’t just a night out—it’s like coming home to a table set by dear friends who are also masters of their craft. I've known the team behind this gem for a while, and watching them pour their hearts into every detail of this restaurant has been nothing short of inspiring. But knowing them personally only enhances what is already a truly exceptional experience. From the moment we walked in, it felt like a warm embrace. Alcides greeted us with his usual sparkle—gracious, attentive, and effortlessly intuitive. Every team member has this incredible ability to make you feel like the most important guest in the room, and it’s not just because we’re friends; it’s who they are. The timing, the flow, the thoughtful pacing between courses—it’s all done with such care and ease, like a perfectly choreographed dance. The service is outstanding—thoughtful, seamless, and befitting a first-class culinary experience. The dishes were mouth-watering. We began with a burrata dish that immediately set the tone: luxuriously creamy, delicately seasoned, and paired simply with tender peas. This was followed by Prosciutto di Parma, elegantly layered over greens and balsamic glaze. Next came the asparagus with fonduta and parmesan—a standout in both texture and flavour. The asparagus retained just the right bite, while the rich fonduta and sharp parmesan added luxurious depth. My main course, Monkfish with Alubia beans, Marinda tomatoes, and mojo verde, was a masterpiece. The monkfish was perfectly cooked—firm and tender—with the creamy beans and sweet tomatoes creating a comforting, Mediterranean-inspired base. The mojo verde added just the right amount of punch and freshness. This dish was bold yet elegant. My friend had the equally impressive dish, the stuffed rabbit leg, filled with Tuscan sausage and served with Castelluccio lentils, broad beans, and sorrel. The sorrel’s tangy note cut through the richness beautifully. The pink fir potatoes on the side were a lovely, buttery complement. We ended with a playful, unforgettable dessert: the passionfruit “Lavery Mess.” Light, tart, sweet—it had everything you'd want in a finale. A superbly curated meal, rooted in quality ingredients and handled with precision and soul. The progression of dishes told a story of seasonality, comfort, and creativity They’ve created a space that radiates warmth, care, and culinary brilliance. Whether you’re coming for the food, the atmosphere, or the familiar faces, you’ll leave full in every sense of the word. Rating: 5/5 — A heartfelt masterpiece.

Stunning!!! Enjoyed lunch here sooooo much. The service was impeccable - attentive without the dreaded compulsive refilling of glasses that is so off-putting, an airy, light and considered decor and the food...wow!! A side salad that we were talking about on the way home, potatoes that tasted like they were dug up that morning and such subtle blends of flavours in each and every dish. Great wine & cocktails too. All in all a lovely place to enjoy some great food.

The most perfect meal ever ! It has ben a long time since I had a meal in which every single dish was outstanding ! From the Cod roe wit radish, to the pork tonnato, to the scallop, to the ravioli with ricotta pine nuts, courgettes and lots of butter, to the turbot, every single dish was perfect ! The ending was with the chocolate mousse and prunes ! Amazing ! The service was smooth, competent, smiley, courteous and prompt! I’m very very very impressed ! Will go back very soon !
