Little Chihuahua Opening Polk Street Location for More Burritos in SF - Eater SF

"The Little Chihuahua is getting a little bit bigger with a 5th location on Polk Street. The 12-year-old San Francisco mini-chain of upscale taquerias will open that next outpost, at 1431 Polk, after Labor Day weekend. There, it will serve more of the garlic shrimp and al pastor burritos that fans have come to expect. The space, formerly a Greek restaurant called Mykonos, seats 40, and features a new mural by the artist Serge Gay Jr." - Caleb Pershan

Google
Wonderful little Mexican casual bistro, spotlessly clean and airy, bright and cheerful. The best shrimp burrito I've ever had, so the menu definitely needs further exploration. Excellent for solo dining, takeout, or groups. Service is very quick, friendly, and efficient. A great find in this area.

Ordered garlic shrimp bowl and steak & shrimp al diablo burrito. The service was very quick and easy to navigate. The food was made fresh and delicious.

Incredible tacos with a range of spicy salsas and guac. Lovely friendly server even though we were the last people rocking in late and staying until close. Strong recommend!

Google
10/10 I had the Steak and Shrimp Al Diablo Tacos. It was freshly made and was really good. I paired it with a refreshing Watermelon Frescas and a side of Tortilla Chips. The lady who took my order was very friendly and accomodating. Amazing food and excellent customer service. Will definitely come back.

Google
Yummy garlic prawn and steak salad bowl and plantain burrito! We also have some delicious homemade juice with our meal. Friendly staff at the order counter and quiet spot for a relaxing meal.

Google
Their chorizo and veggies burrito is great and just what we needed. It was meaty a little smoky and paired well with the salsas at the bar. The salsa bar was tiny but the salsas tasted really fresh. I went with their green sauce and pico de Gano. Both added a nice but of freshness and acidity to the bonito. The atmosphere was great as well. The green mural on the walls balanced nicely with the modern athstetic. Overall a nice place with a tone of veggie options.

Came here on a recommendation from my barber when my brother was in town and was very pleasantly surprised. It’s good food, period. Actually also, it’s a lot of food which is also good. Sometimes you just want a huge burrito with a salsa bar with multiple options and TLC delivers.

Google
I ordered the Fried Plantain & Black Bean tacos with chicken. Along with a side of guac & chips. The food was delicious and the portion was plenty. After one taco I was full, I ate the rest a few hours after. I tried out the fresh watermelon juice. It was very refreshing. The cashier was pleasant as well.

Yelp
I'm going to update my review because I had a good experience here tonight. I'll state for the record that you are much better off ordering in the store than online. They are much more likely to get the order right and if you are dining in you can always get it fixed if it's wrong. That said, I went in tonight to order in person using the rewards discount on the rewards app. The lady working is a wonderful lady and after talking to her a bit about the menu and me spotting birria somewhere she offered me a chilaquiles birria burrito off the brunch menu even though it was 6 p.m. I took her up on it and BAM. It was freaking amazing. I have ordered food here many many times and I reconciled the fact tonight that the food is actually very good. It's more or less made from scratch, fresh and better than most places. I'd agree that the menu changes implemented a few years ago suck but the quality of the food is the same. If you have not tried the chilaquiles and / or birria is an outstanding option. Best in the City? Probably not but better than anything you'll find in the neighborhood.

Yelp
my boyfriend and I LOVE this spot, super super friendly service and absolutely solid burritos. the garlic shrimp smells AMAZING and has a very yummy garlic-y flavoe. we are also a big fan of the breakfast burrito. their sauce bar esp the green sauce is very delicious. restaurant is cute and clean. I do wish though that they had guac in their burritos instead of straight avocado. I would love to taste more guac.

Yelp
Excellent service, excellent food. Very nice and professional front of house staff, food is good and unique and their guacamole is special. Check them out!

Yelp
Tacos surprisingly large portions. Agua fresca could've used more watermelon flavor. Interior clean and relaxing. Salsas looked fresh and well chilled

Yelp

Yelp
My husband and I were looking for a good place for taco Tuesday. We came across this place and decided to give it a try. I ordered a chicken burrito with the works and OMG!!!! Was it delicious. So much better than Chipotle by far. It was huge I only managed to eat half. My husband got the steak and shrimp Diablo tacos with rice and beans. He really enjoyed them. It was filled with tons of steak and shrimp. We also got margaritas. And man were they strong. They also have a great salsa bar too. I will most definitely be coming back amd try something different.

Yelp
VERY simple order - two super burritos, chips & salsa, and chips & guacamole. 4 items on the order total. And they didn't even bother to put the chips & salsa in the bag. After we closely followed the DoorDash driver make his way to our house - a 20 minute drive- we were so excited for our food. We excitedly opened the bag and.... NO CHIPS & SALSA! The bag was unopened and stapled shut. TLC didn't bother to confirm the order was complete before they stapled the bag shut and give to the DoorDash driver. Not only did we want chips and salsa, but we really wanted the salsa to eat with our burritos! I called the restaurant and the guy that answered was like - yeaah, we forgot it, nothing we can do about it, call DoorDash. So, what, they take your money and just leave out the food and could give a sh*t. Getting a credit back from DoorDash for the missing item isn't good enough - we WANTED CHIPS and especially SALSA with our $70 burrito order! I love the Divis location, but never ordered from this one before... I won't order from here again! Crappy service all around. AND SO BASIC - it's not like I made any special weird requests or even like we had a huge order. Highly disappointing.

Yelp
A friend and I were walking to a concert on a Friday night and needed a quick bite to eat on the way. We stumbled across the Little Chihuahua on our way there and stopped in. There weren't many people inside when we walked in around 6:30pm on a Friday night, but by the time we left, it was packed! It was loud! It was fun! There was a guy reading alone at a table, some families, a large group that seemed like they were coworkers... The decor was light and airy, we loved the walls. Service was prompt and smiley. My friend ordered 2 al pastor tacos and I ordered an al pastor burrito and pineapple agua fresca. It wasn't as big as burritos you get in the Mission, but everything hit the spot and was fresh and filling. We liked the salsa bar. Will be back to try their plates, quesadillas, or rice bowls!

Yelp
The chicken Burritos, nachos, and green salsa are very good. The people working there are always nice and quick. You can order for pickup on their website which is nice (faster and cheaper than the apps). All of these are a rare combo, so I like this place.

Yelp
I have coworkers that recommend Lil Chihuahua and always have good things to say about this restaurant. I got to try them out today for the first time. A coworker treated me and another gal to lunch after a very long morning. She suggested stopping eating in at Lil Chihuahua. I was down! It's only a 5 minute or so walk from the office. The three of us arrived and was welcomed by staff and the delicious aroma of different dishes enjoyed by patrons dining in. There was no line (yes!!). But, we didn't know what to order. My coworker treating us both recommended different dishes and said that everything on the menu was good. She is a foodie like me...so, I trusted her judgment! I ordered the café Horchata, al pastor bowl, and the plantains (appetizer). The cafe Horchata was amazing! Coffee and Horchata is something I've never seen or had before, but, this was good. It was a nice balance of sweet and robust from the coffee! The Al pastor bowl was delicious! It was a nice sized serving for the price, I couldn't even finish it all! I added some habanero sauce on top and it really brought the flavors even more to life! The plantains, I ended up sharing! This was a very interesting and satisfying dish! I fell in love at first bite! It is a shareable appetizer. The restaurant was roomy and had colorful murals over the walls. The walls leading to the bathroom was a bright yellow! The salsa cart have various salsas with various degrees of heat, as well as plastic and metal silverware. Next to that cart, was a faucet and cups to pour yourself some water. I thoroughly enjoyed my time and lunch with my coworkers at Lil Chihuahua! The service was friendly and quick (forgot to mention our food was brought to our table!), and the food was off the hook! I'll be returning at some point to try some other items that caught my eye this visit.

Yelp
This is my favorite Mexican place in the area because they have AMAZING GF burritos. The staff is so friendly. Veronica was so lovely, I'd go back just for her.

Yelp
Cute lil contemporary place, w over sized burrito bowls (def a must try!!) and gigantic burritos. You won't be disappointed. My only qualm is that there was no ice in the margarita, so had to ask for it. Otherwise it tastes great. Cheers

Alec H.

Yelp
The prices are good and serving sizes are awesome. We ordered a small super nachos and it was huge plus delicious and the Al pastor burrito. The margaritas are in big glasses and very cheap. The staff is fast and friendly as well

Yelp
I was around the area and looking for a place for a quick bite and hankering for a burrito. The place was pretty empty but clean. I ordered a TLC super burrito with whole wheat tortilla. The regular pollo asado burrito was $11 with $2 extra to add guacamole and cheese. I was shocked to find out that I was charged $2 extra for the whole wheat tortilla. At most Mexican restaurants, they don't charge for a different wrapper. So okay, there most be something special, right? Nope. When I got the burrito, it was a bit loosely wrapped and mostly filled with rice and beans and the little amount of chicken was barely noticeable. Overall, the burrito tasted bland and the best thing were the salsas, which you self-serve at their salsa station. I understand food is expensive but paying over $17 for a bland burrito is ridiculous.

James N.

Yelp
Im pretty sure they know or at least have the will to make it better. Sadly their food is just terrible lacking in so many ways.

Holly M.

Yelp
5 stars but only for Veronica who is the cutest and sweetest cashier in the world. I frequent The Little Chihuahua because the food is consistent and yummy but the rest of the staff leaves a lot to be desired. Theyre unfriendly and often seem miserable. You'd think since I'm here weekly they'd be more welcoming or at least acknowledge seeing my face regularly but they never do. Veronica always greets me with a smile and knows what I order. As a bonus, I often see her making recommendations to people when they don't know what to order.

Yelp
Yes!! Great food and super fresh. Had the Al Pastore burrito and the salsa bar was really the highlight. Super nice people and great experience. Honestly honestly think it shoves Popalote under the table with its fresh ingredients, unique recipes and quality. Pineapple and a burrito is generally something I frown on, but it was banging.. check it out.

Yelp
Have been to this location thrice now because we trust this brand from the Divisadero location, but have been disappointed all the time with the flavor of the food. The spices and flavors are just not there in the food. The interiors are great at this location though, as compared to the one at Divisadero. Why the food isn't as great is a mystery! I still believe in TLC and their food, just not this location.

Angelic R.

Yelp
The best and delicious tacos, everything it's delicious, sauces and menu are the perfect combination, thank you so much Veronica for your wonderful service and your amazing hospitality, the guys in the kitchen are fire !! I will coming back soon!
google avatar

Yelp
Oh No, I'm Mexican and it's a big No. the only thin Mexican about this place is the name and the one cook in the back. I just spent $40 for watered down version of Mexican food. And I specifically said no sour cream and I got sour cream. UPDATE: Stale AF greasy chips. Half I'm just throwing out..
google avatar

Khoi H.

Yelp
Came here hungry and it was virtually empty, nothing wrong with that at all! I ordered the Carne Asada quesadilla which was around $14 I believe, it was alright but was dry, lacked flavor, and a bit cold. Customer service wasn't the best as well, not that I expected much but it would've been nice. They recently reopened indoor dining and there's a wide selection of Mexican dishes available, orders come out relatively quickly as well given there's no rush. Wouldn't come here again but it was nice to try!

Yelp
Great Al Pastor tacos in a clean spot in a convenient location. Also extremely fair price with prompt and friendly service. Great to have a new, good neighborhood spot like this!

Yelp
Food here is pretty good I can't complain, but the customer service is absolutely amazing! I felt very welcome right when I stepped into the restaurant, Veronica was very polite and pleasing. She helped with all my questions also with what I wanted to eat for lunch that evening. The restaurant itself was very clean and presentable I really enjoyed the last time I had late-lunch here. The one thing that I personally liked the most was the open salsa bar and variety of flavors.

Britt R.

Yelp
Pleasantly surprised how super clean, reasonably priced, friendly staff and delicious food! Veronica was very sweet and pleasant, even keeping her cool with a line almost out the door. Open kitchen, salsa bar, beautiful yet simple decor and delicious watermelon aquas fresca. Where else can you get a cup of homemade pizole or chicken tortilla soup for $5.00? I'll definitely go back and nice to know there's a few of them!

Swoopy G.

Yelp
I love this place ! I work down the street and this is a pretty good spot ! They have a delicious vegan burrito. The flavor is so tasty. They're really filling too. The service here is on point ! Great spot , great location ! Thank you for always being there friendly and welcoming ! Keep it up ! :)

Yelp
My coworker was raving about their fish taco on our way to get coffee this morning. After a particular hard day at work, and today being opening day from the pandemic, I decided it would be a good day to treat myself. The employee at the register greeted me and I told him it was my first time there. He told me to take as much time as I needed. The menu is only available at the register, and it's taped down. So I suggest looking up their menu ahead of time so you know what you want. I got the Ensenada fish taco and plantain/black bean taco, and made it a meal with rice and refried black beans. I also got a pineapple agua fresca, which was available today. I seated myself after placing the order, and I didn't have to wait long despite all the takeout orders I saw (and heard because there was so much pinging). I can see why my coworker was raving about the fish taco-it was so good! It was a perfectly battered fish, and definitely not the frozen filet kind. It was a good portion of fish-to-slaw ratio. And the slaw added freshness to it. It also wasn't oily. I definitely could've eaten another one. But I wanted to try the plantain taco, and that's what filled me up. The plantain taco came with black beans, chopped onions and cilantro, red bell pepper, and other toppings. I'm one of those that think cilantro tastes weird, but I didn't mind it with the onions. I was really full two bites in, and I had hardly touched the rice and refried beans. I only had an iced mocha and a protein bar to eat today, so I was starving when dinner time came around. But of course I finished my meal because I just power through the feeling of a full stomach. And the pineapple fresca was delicious! Perfect for a warm day like today. I'm not sure if they're still limiting how many people can eat inside, but it looks like all tables are open. And I like that the food is served in compostable dinnerware. I will definitely dine here again.

Yelp
I used to come here weekly, loved the tofu, 5 stars, but... ... It looks like they took the tofu off the menu. There are other taquerias with better soyrizo so no point in ordering that here and grilled vegetables or mushrooms on any menu tells me that they just wanted to check the "we have a vegetarian / vegan option" box without putting any effort into it. 2 stars because it was good previously, but until the tofu is back, I won't be.

Yelp
The other reviews for this place made us unsure about trying this place out, but we were standing right outside the restaurant. And our Mexican food craving could not be ignored. On entering the space, I really took to the ambiance. The restaurant interior is clean and spacious and invoked my trust in the kitchen. I noticed there were some choices for vegetarians on the menu, which was exciting. I ordered the Fried Plantain & Black Bean Burrito to-go. They double checked to make sure I was okay with dairy, and I appreciated that touch. They also offered free chips and two types of salsa for free. The burrito was absolutely delicious. I typically like extremely flavorful food, and I am typically prepared with salsas and sauces to eat with burritos that leave me unfulfilled --- but not once did I think of adding anything onto this burrito. The flavors played so well together. And it was very filling. I felt an equal tug between being upset the burrito was over and being sure I couldn't eat another bite on finishing it up, so thumbs up to that. The chips and salsa themselves were just okay. As I'm writing this review, I'm already looking forward to grabbing another meal from them soon!

Yelp
Little Chihuahua is a neighborhood favorite with a clean and comfortable ambiance and fast and friendly service. The food is fresh and the menu has several vegan and protein options. They offer plates, rice or salad bowls, tacos, burritos or quesadillas. They also serve a breakfast bowl or burrito. The varieties of salsa and the guacamole are full of flavor! Head on down for a tasty meal.

Joel M.

Yelp
My neighborhood tacqueria finally. Used to have to go to Divisidero or Noe Valley to get my fix. Definitely recommend, menu is outstanding :PPP My go-tos are the al diablo (shrimp & steak) burrito & the posole. Posole packs just enough heat to clear the sinuses, kill the chill & any hangover remnants. They have a fantastic complimentary salsa bar, includes pickled jalapeños. Service is great, food comes up quick & fresh. Place is spotless, which in this town counts for A LOT.
google avatar

Doug M.

Yelp
I absolutely love this place. I almost always have the black bean and plantain burrito, a lovely mix of flavors that really hits the spot. The service staff is nice, the food is reasonably priced, a great lunch spot.

Yelp
Great service, Great food, very friendly staff!!! Garlic shrimp tacos delicious with Tomatillo sauce!

Yelp
Came across The Little Chihuahua on a walk down Polk Street with a friend, and we thought we'd check it out. The service was great! I got a vegetarian enchilada and the person who rang me up was really helpful and suggested some other veggie options in case I was interested. He also offered to replace the sour cream with guac when I said I didn't want sour cream. Food was prepared quickly and was fresh. They also added in some free chips and salsa, which was a nice touch. Also the portion size was huge! The food tasted great. I'll definitely be back!
google avatar

Dana Z.

Yelp
A bit pricey, but the tacos are delicious. I will come back and try the burrito next time. I must say, I was pretty excited when I saw Little Chihuahua opening up on Polk Street - finally, great Mexican food a few steps away from my apartment! The menu is pretty simple and I love that because you're not overwhelmed by choices. There's also brunch on the weekends (the morning tacos sound pretty delicious), and you're welcomed to order a $6 sangria whenever, $3.75 horchata (my favorite!), $2.95 agua fresca (jamaica....), and so many more options. The tacos are $5-$6 each, they're pretty sizeable. 2 are enough for a meal for me, 3-4 is probably needed for someone slightly bigger :P. I really enjoyed the short rib + al pastor, and the shrimp looked pretty darn delicious too. The burritos come in two sizes with a $1 price delta. Why not get the big one and save half for lunch the next day? :) Restaurant set up is pretty casual. You order at the counter and they bring your food to your table if you're eating in. There are longer tables for bigger groups and smaller tables for pairs or fours. By all means - bring your friends, your date, your husband/wife, your kids, etc. You'll enjoy great food at decent SF prices.
google avatar

Cris B.

Yelp
Solid place. There are few Mexican restaurants in this neck of the woods, I've been to them all; the Little Chihuahua is a welcomed addition that serves fantastic food. I am in love with their tortilla chicken soup. I'm a soup gurl and was greatly surprised with my first bite how authentic and homemade the soup was and I am excited to know that when I'm on a hunt for excellent soup, the Little Chihuahua will be my go to place.
google avatar

Allyson L.

Yelp
Came in on a Friday night and almost all the seats were taken. We browsed the menu until we both decided to get the enchiladas. My boyfriend got it with the shrimp and I chose the Al pastor. I love al pastor. Anyways, they come out on blue plates and it's actually quite a lot of food. I split it into 2 meals for me. The beans were delicious and definitely get both sauces. The enchiladas were delicious and tasted good even the next day! I'm not sure people know, but they do have an area where you can clear your plates and dump your garbage, so I'd recommend you do that so people can sit at the table after you leave.

Chris P.

Yelp
Super fresh delicious chicken burrito. Fried plantain and black been bowl was great. Veronica took our order and she had a fantastic personality. She checked on all the tables and had a smile the entire time. Just great!

Emily L.

Yelp
I order from here frequently but found a hair in my shrimp tacos today which killed my appetite. Yuck. Outside of this though I've noticed the foods been very bland and under seasoned the last few times I've ordered. I thought it was a fluke but this is the 3rd time I've had to salt my own tacos. Lastly it's frustrating how when you order tacos they aren't delivered with lime and salsa. Occasionally if you ask they'll include a lime- but come on, no salsa?
google avatar

Brandon Z.

Yelp
Make sure you check your takeout order or you will arrive home disappointed. The food is 3/5, service is nonexistent.

J J.

Yelp
First impression, it is very clean inside and the service was great, staff very friendly. Had the steak and shrimp burrito, delicious and filling. The options on the salsa bar all fresh. Will definitely be back for more!
google avatar

Dean N.

Yelp
Nice local Burrito and Taco joint. Usually fresh ingredients and helpful service. Open through out quarantines and staff has a great attitude.
google avatar

Maya R.

Yelp
Delicious unique burritos! I'm a vegetarian and got the fried plantain black bean burrito which was excellent - had the perfect proportions of rice, beans, red bell peppers, and plantains. Plus some yummy cheese. My husband had a carnitas and he thought it was very well balanced too. We didn't get chips, but were able to try three salsas thanks to the kind guy at the counter and the best was the chipotle one. Nice consistency and spicy roasted flavor that went great with both our burritos. I would say that it is quite pricey though for $13-15 per burrito. We got a good deal on caviar that made it worth it though and I'll probably be back given the filling quality and quantity - mine was good for two meals!
google avatar

O. R.

Yelp
Bean and cheese burrito was 95% runny beans, 5% cheese. Also, coleslaw tasted sour/rotten. Liked the fire roasted salsa.
google avatar

Karla C.

Yelp
Rude and nasty non authentic Mexican food 0/10 don't recommend the pozole it was cold.
google avatar

Willow M.

Yelp
I agree 100% with Matt H. I came here weekly before and during the pandemic. I ordered directly from the website so they wouldn't have to pay "door dash" fees and always tipped 20% "Support Local" is my motto! During the pandemic and before the pandemic food was great, always got what we ordered, and the salsas were on point. That has changed, unfortunately. Move to the new menu ..... - why get rid of the super baby burrito ? Why change the salsas ? I agree to Just up the prices. It's understandable. Your committed customers would still return for quality food ordered. Also my experience since the menu change; every time I order my order is wrong. I've ordered the same burrito for years and my last 3 orders. Wrong tortilla with no guacamole or sour cream, then just rice and beans and nothing else and the last straw I got a tortilla with just rice and lettuce. And the irony is I wrote in the notes lite rice please :) I got a refund for the latter but it wasn't about a refund it's more about uhhh what's going on? I was told it's because of the new menu and changes, but I've ordered the same thing except now instead of a super baby it's just a super. So not sure how the new menu affects a simple burrito order I've been ordering for years, like 4 years(used to go to the mission shop back in the day, then committed to Polk when it opened) ...? Loved loved loved this place. My burrito go to no more, sadly. Sorry Lil C :( - I can't bring myself back for fear of what will be in my tortilla that I didn't order. I am on your email list so if things change it could bring me back. Wish you all the best.

Ricardo Raphael C.

Yelp
Worst chilaquiles I've had in my life. They put some sad sauce on chips and tried to pretend like it's chilaquiles. Couldn't finish them.
google avatar

Marky M.

Yelp
Guy behind the counter yesterday, 6/7 around 2pm was visibly sick. When I walked in he was hacking a loogey into the customer trash bin. Then he immediately blows his nose and walks up to the register, no mask anywhere in sight. I literally turned around and walked out yet after saying "dude, you're really sick you should be wearing a mask". Unacceptable and a blatant public health hazard
google avatar

Stephanie J.

Yelp
Yum! I order delivery mostly and love the burritos. Especially the plantain one. I've been at the restaurant once just to pick up. Much cleaner than the burrito places in the mission. I found the cashier girl to be nice and friendly. You can't go wrong here!
