"Opening after Labor Day weekend at 1431 Polk, I'll be able to visit the Little Chihuahua's fifth Polk Gulch location, which seats 40 and features a new mural by Serge Gay Jr.; there it will serve the garlic shrimp and al pastor burritos that fans have come to expect. The 12-year-old San Francisco mini-chain—started on Divisadero in 2007 by New Zealand native Andrew Johnstone and his partner Camila Fernandez from Chile—mixes taqueria classics with less typical proteins like chile verde tofu, fried plantains, and sautéed mushrooms, and emphasizes quality ingredients such as organic tortillas and grass-fed beef. Johnstone brought experience from big-time Bay Area chain Chevys, where he was R&D director, and the new Polk outpost will also offer brunch (French toast with agave syrup, breakfast tacos, and chilaquiles) as well as takeout and delivery; the chain already has locations in Noe Valley, at SFO, and on Valencia Street in the Mission." - Caleb Pershan
