The 38 Best Restaurants in Honolulu, Hawai‘i | Eater

"A butcher shop and bakery, the Local General Store is a one-stop shop for local meats and sweets. The all-local butcher case — the only one on O‘ahu — showcases cuts like venison, beef, and pork, as well as charcuterie including bacon, ‘ulu (breadfruit) scrapple, sausages, and even a house-made Spam. You’ll find a daily-changing sandwich of the day with local meat, and in the ever-changing bakery case, crossover between sweet and savory, like in Chinese almond cookies made with lard tucked into a croissant or char siu danish. But the pastries also shine with Hawai‘i’s local fruit, like the liliko‘i baklava danish. No matter what’s offered here, Jason Chow (the butcher and Eater Young Gun) and Harley Tunac Chow (the baker) emphasize local ingredients. Know before you go: Get here before noon for the best bakery selection." - Martha Cheng

The 16 Best Bakeries in O‘ahu | Eater

"Hawai‘i’s local fruits are an unfortunate rarity in Honolulu bakeries. Harley Tunac wants to change that. She and her fiance, Jason Chow, a butcher and Eater Young Gun, met at the now-shuttered Aina in San Francisco and returned home to Honolulu at the end of 2019 to start a butcher shop and bakery. The pandemic altered those plans, and now the two sell meat and pastries out of Kaimuki Superette on Sundays. Chow’s products find their way into Tunac’s savory treats, such as in a Kualoa Ranch ham and cheddar pastry and a house-made pork floss and scallion Danish. Check Instagram for the weekly menu, which might include Manoa Chocolate croissants, kumquat doughnut twists, or pirie mango buns." - Martha Cheng

Stumbled onto this place and had an amazing breakfast burrito then came back another day for some pastries. Holy crap, everything we ate was fantastic, using local ingredients and the sweetest people! Such a special place.

In search of the perfect kouign amann, I now pronounce my search ended. Not because I found it, but I found it's cousin instead. I found a perfectly crafted croissant with all the main attributes of its' lesser known relative; outer flaky layers that melt like butter as soon as they sense the warmth of your tongue, and inner layers with the perfect chewy mouth feel primordially programmed to elicit joy in humans. The French were really on to something, but this particular pastry was created in Kaimuki by a local girl that was going to go to med school. ( I was tipped off to Local General by a visiting professor from UCSF, in the city of Arsicault). Try it with a good cup of coffee ( and it needs to be Damn Good! to keep up) to get your mouth to sing. Nahenahe: If you're lucky enough to be able to do this on a beautiful Sunday morning in East Honolulu, with gentle trades wafting you in pure leaf scented air...then enjoy and let your heart sing🥰 Review note: I purchased the chocolate almond croissant at the LG stand at the Saturday KCC Farmers market, and re-toasted with steam infusion ( Wonder Oven) at home the next morning. This review is based on that experience. I plan to make regular visits to this store based on my experience.

Top 3 Reasons to visit TLGS: 1. Award winning croissants & pastries 2. Fresh local meat & butcher expertise 3. Local owners who invest in Hawai’i food systems Harley & Jason are incredible! It’s been amazing to watch them grow from a weekly pop-up, to a fan-favorite at multiple markets, and now their own place. Their products are exceptional because they only include the freshest ingredients and craft everything with precision and love. Some of my personal favorites: - carrot cake (yule logs especially 😍) - traditional croissant - chocolate banana muffin - croissant cinnamon roll - chorizo sausage - ulu scrapple Best to go early when the selection is largest and beat the line. And always buy more pastries than you think you need! ;)

Google
First off, very friendly crew there. Was recommended to me by a friend and it was great. Always searching for high quality beef and their Ribeye was amazing. Butcher prepared it right in front me. Their sandwich special was lunch today and it was perfect. High quality local island beef. Gonna be my go to!

Google
I hope my mother doesn’t see this review, because the carrot cake from here is seriously the best I’ve ever had, ever bite is like a dip in the ocean, refreshing and tantalizing! That crust!!! ONO! And that’s just the bakery, they also have a ton of farm to table fresh meats.

This bakery and butchery is a hidden gem! From the moment you walk in, the aroma of freshly baked goods and savory meats fills the air. The pastries are flaky perfection, and the selection of meats is top-notch. The friendly staff adds a warm touch to the experience. A must-visit for anyone craving the perfect blend of sweet and savory delights!

Google
FINALLY a local butcher shop in Kaimuki!!!! And all of their meats are 100% local Hawai'i-raised meats from local farms. And all of their pastries and baked goods are mouthwateringly delicious! Where else can you find a Cinnamon Roll Croissant, a Pastrami & Cheese Croissant, or a Lychee Pastry that's this delicious?? It's no wonder they sell out of their pastries EVERY. DAY. I love a good butcher shop because they can customize any cut of meat you want and give you recommendations based on what you're making or how many people you're feeding. None of the animal is wasted, and you know exactly what quality you're getting, which is literally the best quality! They make their own frozen beef stock and custom sausages, and even make their own spam! Everything is good, every time I go. You can't go wrong here. 10/10 recommend!

Yelp
The last time I was at this building, it was the Superette. But this new venture appears to be making some waves with its butcher and bakery sharing the same space. If I lived here, I would've bought something from the meat side. They have an interesting array of baked goods to choose from. I normally get a plain croissant to test their wares, but I just went for the twice baked almond croissant with guava jam filling. This was buttery and crispy and oh soooooo good! I also got a s'mores danish that I had the next day. Good test of a good bakery is how it will taste the next day, and this one did not disappoint! Had I had a toaster oven, I could've reheated, but the chocolate and marshmallow filling were soooo good! I wish I would've came here earlier in the week, so I could sample more. There are a few seats inside, but it doesn't feel like a place to sit and chat. The staff is really friendly! Even got smiles from some of the bakers. Definitely worth checking out! Mahalo Local General!

Yelp
On a recent trip to Hawaii, our friend brought us some amazing pastries from her friend's bakery shop and everything we had was a 5/5! My favorite was their chocolate and orange (local variety type) croissant...I could have eaten 10 of these. Absolutely delicious On my next trip I hope to visit their brick and mortar since it also has a well known butcher shop inside as well! Great job guys!

Yelp
Decided to make my way out of the west side to Waialae area to try these baked good and it was totally worth it. I came in the morning and was lucky enough to get street parking - that's really all you got. So big tip is to do that so you don't struggle with parking and don't have to wait too long. It's a small shop that sells baked goods and fresh meat. They get packed fast, so again, come in the mornings to not deal with too much crowds. I only ordered four different items which were the Breakfast Sandwich with their fresh deli meat, Char Sui Croissant, Chocolate Croissant, and Browned Butter Chocolate Chip Cookie. All their stuff is home made and they use local ingredients! The deli doesn't open until 11 so I wasn't able to get the meat in the showcase, but there are meat items in the fridge. Back to the baked goods. Everything was absolutely delicious and I highly recommend. The Croissants were so soft, crunchy and delicious. I highly recommend the Char Sui because it tasted like a peking duck. Absolutely phenomenal. The Breakfast Sandwich is a great balance of savory and tang. The tang is from the Mayoli sauce. The milk bread was very soft and soaked the flavors nicely, it was melt in your mouth. Just know, it takes about 8 minutes for them to prepare the sandwich - definitely worth the wait. The person who helped us was new and you could tell, but one of the bakers was helping her. She was so nice because they boxed up our goodies even though they originally said that they could only do it if we ordered more than three items. Service was great and it was fast. My only regret is that I didn't order more!

Yelp
I have passed this place many times and have always wanted to try it. There is a small parking lot in the back but if that's full street parking is the only option. Once inside, there is a rotating pastry display. Although I know everything is made fresh and many of the ingredients are locally sourced, the prices are very high. I tried almost every pastry they had that day and they were all good, but very expensive. The only thing I would definitely come back for is their famous charsiu croissant. It was warm and oh so flaky with a delicious sweet and salty filling. I need to come back to try their sandwiches as those sound good too.

Yelp
I've had a chance to try their hot and cold sandwiches as well as pastries. Small Kine Keiki Mushroom and Gruyere Cheese was fantastic...as was the recommendation. Chicken Salad Sandwich - exclusive to Mondays - is also awesome.

Yelp
GET ON THE BUS. GO TO LOCAL GENERAL STORE! This was exactly what I was looking for as I try to find smaller local businesses to support that prioritize quality versus big box stores. I wanted a local butcher that sold quality beef that we could take back to our spot to cook up and enjoy. The meat was freshly butchered and delicious. We got the RIBEYE steak. Better than any restaurant can serve up! Small shop with some bench seating. Helpful staff and counter order service. I wasn't expecting pastries and coffee here but the pastries..... OMG to die for. It's like ALOHA in every bite. I went back, on bus, from Waikiki (near international market) twice for the pastries. We tried: ** LILIKOI-ORANGE-GUAVA: LILIKOI BUTTER MOCHI, GUAVA JAM, AND ORANGE WHIPPED CREAM LILIKOI: GREEN MONSTER FARM (WAIALUA) GUAVA: REPPUN FARM (WAIAHOLE) This was a million stars out of ten lol. The pastry was well done - flakey, buttery, crispy and soft at the same time. The mochi? What a lovely surprise! The orange whipped cream - can I swim in a tub of this please? Everytime I took a bite of this I felt so grateful to be able to experience and enjoy this treat. ** Chocolate croissant: 10/10 just yum. Locally sourced chocolate, perfectly done dough. ** Chocolate chip cookie: More of the same. Give me 20 of these. Crispy, buttery, not too sweet, perfection. I saved some to crumble over my nightly Roselani Banana Mac ice cream bowl that I made myself. ** Breakfast Sandwich: 7/10 it was nearly perfect but the bread (maybe brioche) was too sweet. Maybe a sourdough would create a nice balance to round out the r flavors as the sauce itself was a bit on the sweeter side. That said, well done sandwich. Filling, heavy, meats cooked well. This locally owned spot is definitely going to be on my list as a regular, must visit. Thank you Local General :-).

Yelp
I'm really sad that all the baked good were mostly sold out. Go early in the morning at 800am when all the baked goods come out. The croissant and mushroom thing looked good and I'm going to try one. A little butcher/bakery shop all in one, you can't go wrong! They make sandwiches and salads too! Service was great and it did indeed look like a general store. Clean and cool! I'll be back to try more things!

Yelp
So I feel rather fortunate to be living in Long Beach, CA, where the bakery scene is almost unmatched (Gusto, Colossus, etc.). But coming across The Local General Store for some pastries while on a trip to Oahu was def a highlight. Came through on a Sunday morning around 8ish and the pastries were stocked. It was very difficult to choose as everything looked fantastic. We opted for the regular croissant, the black sesame mochi croissant, the char siu croissant, and the brown butter chocolate cookie and ginger turmeric cookie. They even threw in a free mini croissant with chocolate and sprinkles. I always base a bakery on their ability to make a solid regular butter croissant, and damn, was this one amazing. Up there with Arsicault in SF. It was crunchy on the outside, flakey and soft and buttery on the inside. Lamination was perfect. It was a pure joy to eat. The char siu croissant was incredibly magical as well. The meat is so well flavored and the combo of the meat and the flakey croissant is unmatched. The black sesame mochi is top tier. Black sesame is one of my favorite flavors so I might be biased, but this was the perfect slight hint of sweet, and the chewiness of the mochi added a great additional texture to the pastry. Tbh I honestly can't choose which croissant I liked best. They were all god tier pastries lol. We had the cookies later in the evening and the next day, and both were chewy and delicious. The free mini croissant was also very yummy. Prices are reasonable given the quality of the pastries. I know they also sell meat and other provisions here. Hoping on my next trip we can try more of what they have to offer. But yes, there will be a next visit once I'm back!

Yelp
Today on 3/6/25 my daughter said let's take a walk near our job and find some baked goods. We found The Local General Store. We were amazed by how many baked goods they had. It was hard to choose, but we shared the croissant honey butter toast. It was amazing and delicious. I'm going to buy 2 next time . I ordered the breakfast burrito . I loved every bite of it. My daughter ordered the breakfast sandwich. That was good too. We tried each other's food. Customer service was excellent. The cashier was very friendly. It's cute inside of the store . You have the baked goods counter on the left and fresh butcher items on the right . They had very fresh looking sausages , steak, bacon, etc... They also sell cute reusable shopping bags as well. I highly recommend this place. It's located in Kaimuki across from brick tavern. I would recommend that you bring your own carry out bag when you order.

Yelp
I love this butcher shop generally. Knowledgeable staff and nice cuts of meat. And most importantly: you have to grab a sandwich while you're there. It changes regularly and there is only one type, so far as I can tell. And you NEEEED it. I dream about these sandwiches, and I'm not particularly a sandwich person. Tourists: come support a local business and have the daily sandwich, grab a locally made food souvenir. Small selection, but you can't go wrong with anything in their upscale, curated collection.

Yelp
Yes it's that good and meeting the hype. All this at reasonable prices that won't break the bank. Their brownies are the best that I've ever had. Really good chocolate notes without being overwhelmed by sugar. Soft and chewy. This doesn't always appear on the menu so get em while you can. Locally made meats. Never had a sandwich that disappointed. The prime rib is ok a little gamey and tough but expected. Shhh... It's a local secret go to place. If it's featured by Diners Drive Ins and Drives and the big crowds will show which is good for their business so go here while you can.

Yelp
Okay, personal bias I love this place. But it's not just because I'm related to one of the owners (shoutout to my cousin Jason the butcher). It's because the food is phenomenal, and the people behind it are even better. Let's start with the food. The pastries? Bang on. The beef jerky? So ono my family goes through massive mason jars like it's candy. Harley's Olena cookies? The pastry queen strikes again. We inhaled them haha. The cinnamon rolls? Phenomenal icing, gooey perfection. And don't even get me started on the quiche. We literally devoured it before we got back home to Waianae. The mushroom gruyère croissant and everything else? May or may not be part of the reason I gained 10 pounds before flying back Most of the good stuff sells out fast, so go early if you want the full spread. I love that they switch things up and always have something creative and inventive on the menu. There's no one I know other than our grandma who's more passionate about food and cooking with love than Jason. I remember telling him years ago to open a shop or food truck, and I'm so glad he's been able to make his food dreams a reality. Watching that happen through this store has been really special. The staff are super friendly, knowledgeable, and upbeat, even with the nonstop stream of customers pouring in. Sure, prices might feel high to some, but this is Hawai'i and if you want quality, this is where you go. Local ingredients, passionate owners, and food made with ALOHA. I promise I'll try more from the butchery side next time, Jase lol. I'm beyond proud of everything you and Harley have built. Your hard work shows in every bite and every smiling face that walks out the door, dogs included. Please take a vacation once in a while. You all deserve it Support this spot. You'll taste the love.

Yelp
I've been wanting to try the Local General Store for a bit. I came at closing, so they did not have many pastries, which I really wanted to try. We ended up purchasing a steak. My husband thought it looked gross since it wasn't the normal color of meat you would see in the grocery store. We also bought some chicken stock and a salt/pepper/garlic grinder. The staff were very friendly and helpful. There is not a whole lot of space inside, so it is a grab and go. Looking forward to coming back again for lunch. Parking is street parking.

Yelp
Love the char siu croissant how flaky and unexpected! I was addicted... I've tried lemon poppy love the intense lemon flavor. Friendly service, and a cute little shop that also does butchery ! What a unique combo. Nice find.

Yelp
No notes for this unassuming bakery/butcher shop. I came on a Saturday morning with some friends and we shared the almond croissant, char siu pork croissant, and the black sesame mochi croissant. The best bite unanimously was the black sesame croissant - such a unique pastry excellently made. Every element is good, including the whipped cream on top and the mochi interior. I loved the sweet glaze on the char siu croissant as well. Can't wait to come back.

Yelp
sandwich =beef salami excellent butcher shop= sliced roast beef and local half chicken Value - price for 1 lb cold cuts, 1/2 chicken and one deli pre made sandwich was over $50 (pre tip see below) so not the best deal but for a treat, c ant afford to do my weekly shopping here or I would for quality Bakery looked good Service was good, knowledgable , but they ask for tips for counterman (what other meat counter do you tip) I tipped $5 and got feeling counterman didnt think it was enough. ps remember this is to buy meat from butcher shop for same day or next day at latest

Yelp
So glad I finally got to samps! Everything was super delicious and I'm already looking forward to future visits to try other pastries like their lemon crunch cake or ulu samosa croissant. The quiche was bomb, super thick slice with a very creamy smooth filling akin to the texture of soft tofu, with a properly crunchy crust. The chocolate orange braid was really well balanced with the flavors, with neither one overpowering the other, and it wasn't too sweet. The daily sandwich was the killer one for me- the best roast beef I've ever had, with a super tasty green Thai eggplant filling too. The staff are very courteous and I'd be interested to try one of their curated butcher boxes too! :)

Yelp
Wowowoowwow. The seasonal mango mochi lilkoi with mango was amaazing. The pistachio chocolate had a dark chocolate flavor (good!) but a little too sweet. Breakfast sandwich today was made with corned beef and it was flaky and crunchy and delicious. Honey croissant toast was.... Exactly what it sounds like. Sweet, a bit chewy, on the plain side - Wouldn't get it again. Strawberry cheese danish... Also as you'd expect but tasty.

Yelp
I always wanted to try this place and I finally got the chance to! ***What I tried ~ **Breakfast Sandwich (10/10) ~ This was SOOOO good. I loved that they made it fresh and use whichever deli meat they had, but the croissant is so CRISPY. It does get a little messy because it's so flakey too. But I highly recommend if you go! **Strawberry Guava BBQ Sauce (4/10) ~ When I hear these flavors I think of sweet, savory, and tangy. However, this was so overwhelming sweet. I personally thought it was more of a jam than a sauce. I was not a fan of this :( **Dill Pickles (5/10) ~ I thought that this was going to have more spices, but it was just an ordinary pickle. Side note: So I did something weird and dipped the pickle in the sweet BBQ sauce and honestly it wasn't bad!! Overall, I'd come back to try more of the baked goods!

Yelp
Thank you to my YELP friends who insisted I experience the goodness served here at the Local General Store. Especially appreciate Glen A and Randy S as they not only hilited this place as their favorite for croissants and other pastries but helped to guide me to their favorites to try. Did I listen to them? Sort of tho have to confess... I was blinded by all the goodness inside of these doors. I bought more. Lol. And Rod U may just roll his eyes to hear that I bought a bag of that crispy beef jerky here. ;-D Everything that I purchased was most memorably delicious! Purchased and ate before I even drove off... the breakfast sandwich which appeared to be the smaller cousin to the lunch meatloaf sandwich also available. Wow, it was like a piñata party going off in my mouth! Love loved the combination of the in-house made meatloaf with stir-fried kale, lots of ooey gooey cheese, some kind of crunchy, spicy pickles and a nice sauce to bring it all together! There was even a faint aftertaste of kumquat. Served on their fluffy croissant. Wonderful. 11/10. Purchased a lovely ali'i mushroom and gruyere snack twist. Expecting it to be bursting with flavor as it's seasoned with togarashi flakes... the togarashi actually giving it a perfect balance. 10/10 And though I was sufficiently stuffed by the breakfast croissant, after taking a photo of the calamansi, kumquat and cream cheese danish, had to sample a bite before putting away for later consumption. What a unique flavor profile! And if anything has either persimmons or kumquats I can't resist. Would definitely purchase again. 9/10. Almost missed the crispy beef jerky which was located on top of the pastry display case. Not to be confused with the pet treats right next to the bags of jerky. Nicely seasoned. Slightly chewy. 8/10. Definitely will be back. The croissant cinnamon roll sounds heavenly. Wanted to get the amazing looking brown butter chocolate chip and the ginger/ tumeric cookies but decided to save for "next time". Also looking forward to explore the meat case when I have more room in my fridge. Thank you Harley and Jason, for sharing your culinary talents with us. I may not have had the pleasure of visiting you at the famed Jane the Baker in San Francisco, but I intend to make the Local General Store my intimate friend!

Yelp
A butcher shop & a bakery that are physically together in one business? Yes, who would have thought this combination would be a popular & successful joint venture of 2 owners having the passion in what they do! Enter The Local General Store (LGS), that replaced the former Kaimuki Superette (KS) in Kaimuki. Co-owner Jason Chow grew up in Kaimuki & attended the University of HI at Manoa w/ a biology degree. He then realized his passion for the local farmers/ranchers in support of the local food system while distributing sustainable fish to restaurants, then was exposed to animal butchery at Mud Hen Water Restaurant (MHW). He moved to Berkeley, CA to work at The Local Butcher Shop where he learned how to break down whole beef, pork, lamb & chicken; & fabricate/use the whole animal by turning unwanted cuts into sausages, smoked meat, pates, terrines & stocks. He also worked at Butcher & Larder in Chicago. Jason was one of 12 people recognized under the Eater Young Guns Class of 2019 for up & coming young talent & outstanding leadership skills. Co-owner/wife Harley Chow grew up in Waipahu & attended the University of SFO w/ a biology degree. While she initially intended to go into the medical field, her passion was baking. She worked at Jane the Bakery in SFO & learned how to make croissants & was part of the winning team for Best Croissants in SFO in 2018. In July 2018, she was accepted into the James Beard Foundation Women in Culinary Leadership Program & mentored w/ Pastry Chef Meg Galus in Chicago for a year, where she learned refined pastry techniques in women-led leadership skills. Both worked at the now-closed Hawaiian restaurant, Aina, in SFO, where they met & got married. Both moved back to Oahu in 2019 & jointly had pop-up events at the KS & farmers' markets during Covid. They then opened their brick-and-mortar shop consisting of a whole animal butcher shop & bakery called LGS in May 2023. The butchery focused & sourced local, ethnically raised meat to reduce Hawaii's reliance on imported meats, & the bakery focused on croissants & laminated doughs (folded layers of butter and flour), while sourcing locally grown fruits/veggies. Both areas were to bring awareness & increased accessibility to the local food system in HI. The butchery offers raw & cooked cuts of the entire animal, as there is no waste. Housemade meats include: beef (chuck roast, cross rib, pot roast, steaks, brisket, osso buco, stew meat, short ribs, roast beef, ground, salami, corned beef, burgers, tongue); lamb (Molokai venison, ground, shoulder roast/chops, shank, riblets, sirloin, leg medallions); pork (Boston butt, spare ribs, spam, jowls, chops, ground, Portuguese/Italian sausages, chorizo, smoked ham, ham hocks); etc. Other housemade items: beef/lamb tallow, lard, soup stock, beef/bacon chili, beef jerky, salsa, Bratwurst. The pastry shop offers both sweet & savory artisanal desserts that are too numerous to mention, which are offered on a rotational basis. Some of their pastries include: bear claw, kau orange marmalade & hazelnut braid, twice baked choc w/house azuki paste, guava/cream cheese danish, brown butter mochi w/ strawberry guava jam danish, mountain apple on vanilla custard, ginger & olena cookie, choc ganache croissant, bibimbap danish, smoked eggplant/goat cheese danish. Other items include: cookies, puddings, cakes, quiches. Excellent sandwiches of the day (breakfast from 8a & lunch from 11a), using meats from the butchery & housemade bread from the bakery. We had the following: * Lilikoi danish. This unique lilikoi curd & baklava croissant danish was nicely balanced, slightly tart & not overly sweet. Loved the flaky layers of buttery croissant! * Char siu danish w/ pickled mustard greens & sesame seeds. Enjoyed this savory, unique croissant made for Chinese New Year! Who would have thought to use char siu & pickled greens to create this delicious creative pastry?! * Salami sandwich. With housemade bread & beef salami w/ pickled carrots, jalapeno tomatillo mayo & fresh greens were outstanding & so flavorful! Made w/ fresh ingredients, I inhaled this sandwich of the day! Excellent customer service, as you're likely to talk to friendly Harley &/or Jason, as both love to interact w/ their customers. You'll see their passion in their business while chatting with them at their busy neighborhood spot! Hours of operation: bakery - Thurs to Mon 8a to 2p, butchery - Thurs to Mon 9p to 5p, Tues/Wed closed for both. Located next to MHW at 9th & Waialae aves. w/ shared free parking at MHW, a few non-metered parking fronting the restaurant on Waialae, & metered parking nearby. Sometimes, difficult to find parking, as my hubby dropped me off to get takeout & picked me up after my purchase. Love this unlikely concept of a bakery & butchery under one roof, where ingredients are locally sourced to support HI farmers & ranchers! Definitely returning to try other unique & delish pastries, meats & sandwiches! Support local!

Yelp
This is my new place to pick up the best croissants - in person. No more wasting my time going online to see if I get the privilege of ordering one (1) croissant - available in the mid to late afternoon - to have for breakfast the next morning. Now I can get a fresh, buttery, moist, insanely flakey croissant to take home and eat that same morning for breakfast. Yes, I think these plain croissants are as good as you will find in the city. Biting into a fresh one means having the brittle outer layers shatter and scatter like shards of fine glass in a breeze. Your fingers will be coated with buttery goodness - don't lick or wipe your fingers, rub it off and moisturize your hands! Just JK. But a really good croissant is a sensual pleasure. And maybe even better - the danishes! If you've baked in San Francisco then you take a plain croissant as a matter of great pride. Any baker who is part of an annual award winning team for best San Francisco viennoiserie pastry has serious cred. Harley Tunac has it, as a former member of the team at Jane The Bakery's when they were the best. Any flakey treat she puts out at The Local General Store is going to be creative and tasty - croissants (plain, chocolate, twice baked), danishes (sweet or savory), braids, and twists. And they have moods, just like people. Some days, gleaming golden brown delicious. Some days a little dark, like a cloudy day. Some days, perfect looking. Some days, like me - meaning they could be in better shape. There is much more to The Local General Store than just viennoiserie. But I usually just focus on what makes my tummy happy in the morning. I can put up with less than perfection because this stuff is just so good.

Yelp
Update.. I bought a Ribeye today cus it was on sale.. but still paid $32 for it.. and after frying it on the pan, it's SOOOOOOO CHEWYYYYYY. Worse than a choice. I expected better from Grass fed, pasture raised.. and especially at such a high price tag :(

Yelp
This place is just so good :') Every single thing I bought from here has been delicious. The croissants are what they are known for, but I was able to try their breakfast sandwich recently and that was just so delicious. There isn't really a designated area to sit, but there are some chairs near the front counter that you can sit and look out at the street of Kaimuki. I did this on a morning while eating the breakfast sandwich and it was super relaxing. Definitely worth going in the morning because I feel like selection is limited later on in the day since people make it a point to get their best selection when they open.

Yelp
I love their daily sandwiches! I get them any chance I get when I'm in Kaimuki. Their sandwiches are packed with some kind of tasty protein with fresh vegetables that you feel like you are eating a sandwich/fresh salad combo - love that! Not only are you full and satisfied but you feel healthy and whole after eating food made with such fresh, tasty, local ingredients. Plus, it's just good karma to support local, small businesses. I will choose them over any chain restaurant any day.

Yelp
Dessert in Kaimuki, Honolulu, Hawaii... After lunch, we decided to get dessert from The Local General Store. Because it was a holiday, metered street parking was free! Located on Waialae Avenue, this cozy shop has several stools along a counter for dining in. Because it was in the afternoon, selection was limited. I settled on a Croissant Cinnamon Roll with Vanilla Bean Cream Cheese frosting. Maybe I should have ordered something else because the pastry was on the drier, harder side. Maybe I expected too much because my friends who reviewed this place raved about it. I'll just have to return and get a sandwich and a Croissant... and I'll have to come earlier in the day. Service was very friendly and personable. Thanks for the hospitality and pleasant, clean environment!

Yelp
April 2024. Visiting from 9th Island. Just had the roast beef sandwich and it was 5 stars easily. The bread was made in house as well as the roast beef. Bread had great texture. Little crunch and chew on outside and thin and not doughy at all. The roast beef was seasoned and tasted freshly made and portion was plentiful (even a construction worker would give thumbs up). Has a homemade mayo mix with local greens and some relish that hits perfectly with the taste of the roast beef. This sandwich is frickin damn good. See pics. For $14 it's a killer deal. Service is 4 stars. Standard bakery/meat shop. Ambiance is 4 stars. Again typical bakery/meat shop with some seating inside and outside. But overall it's 5 stars for tasty high quality food and damn good value!

Yelp
I stopped for buying some croissants and sliced ham. A lady with long hair behind the counter asked me that "Are you gonna purchase or just browsing?" without smiling, very rudely. It was about one minute after I got in the store. I felt I was treated like a homeless person begging food. After I bought, she did not say THANK YOU, off course no smile. What is wrong with this woman. She needs to learn how to thank customers. I like supporting Kaimuki businesses but not this store anymore.

Yelp
The place that makes you go mmmm!! If I'm lucky I'd find them at the Honolulu Farmers Market and if I'm really lucky they'd still have something left by the time I get there lol! Lucky for us they now have a storefront right on Waialae Ave and when a friend and I parked at her aunt's house which is just two block away so that we can stroll around for Keep It Kaimuki Saturday support small local was a breeze. We headed straight to The Local General Store with the best timing ever as there was no one in there so that we're able to browse and decided at our leisure as the area isn't small but not as spacious with a small crowd. I think it's wild they sell meats as well including Portuguese sausage and Spam the curiosity really did interest me as the sweet and savory scale here is incredible. Arriving quite early we were fortunate to have a great variety of selection available it was the "Guava Jam & Cream Cheese Danish" for me and "Chocolate Ganache Croissant" using Manoa Chocolate for my friend. Though they had some drinks that sounds incredible we decided to hold off as we didn't want to fill up on our first stop, and there is a counter seating on each end of the shop right against the window overlooking Waialae and it was nice so we totally took full advantage of that before we start our adventure and thoroughly enjoyed it all as it had just the right sweetness. I'll definitely be back as the vibe here is just so warm and welcoming filled with so much goodness they make with pride. Thank you!

Yelp
Got the cinnamon roll, black sesame mochi croissant, chocolate chip cookie, ginger cookie, and the pork chatsu croissant and everything was a hit! Loveeeeedddd that the cinnamon roll had a sour cream frosting versus the typical cream cheese. The black sesame croissant may just be the best croissant I've ever had! The depth of flavors in every bite along with texture.... Honestly mind blown! Also such great service and love how the concept of bakery/ butcher shop.

Yelp
My honey and I have a Saturday morning routine and involves coffee from the curb kaimuki, and a quiche and savory pastry from the local general store. We live a 45 second walk from their front door and it is so dangerous, because we could easily pay them a visit daily! Not only are the pastries to die for, but the meat selection is fabulous. I'm not meat connoisseur, but the local general store is my honey's go-to for buying steaks to grill and meat products when we're entertaining. The quality is fantastic and the butchers are friendly and incredibly knowledgeable!

Yelp
I dream about their homemade chasiu croissant. Also tried the mushroom pastry. Everything looked so good! Have to come back and try it all. They also sell jerky (human and dog). No place to sit or hang out

Yelp
I've seen Yeeps post pics and reviews of The Local General Store but I haven't had a chance to stop by to check them out. It wasn't till I had dinner at Restaurant at the Cutlery that I realized how close they were. I mentally kept them in mind and just by luck a fellow Yeep picture messaged me their daily special on a day I was craving a sandwich. Originally I wanted to go to Bocconcino but they aren't open on Mondays. It was meant to be so I snuck away around 11am to finally see what all the hype was about. Arriving shortly after 11am was perfect! I got a street metered stall right before the store front. When I entered, I was the only person there so I was greeted and helped immediately. Their IG ad said the sandwich was ready at 11am and they had 4 premade sandwiches ready for customers. It was only $14 and the sandwich was massive! I'm so glad I arrived when I did because right after I paid, 4-5 people entered! Since it was my first visit, I took a moment to see other items they offer. They offer cuts of meat, homemade sausages, ground meats and pastry items. The sandwich of the day was a TLGS roast beef w/horseradish cheese, and caraway pickled carrots on house made bread featured farms Griffith Livestock (Makaha) & Ho Farms (Kahuku). It was flavorful and extremely filling. The pickled carrots acidity made the sandwich complete. I couldn't believe how good it was for only just $14! Thank you Lily D for sharing their daily sandwich special with me. I definitely want to come back to try their homemade sausages and another sandwich. Totally worth looking for parking to visit. Amazing find in Kaimuki!

Yelp
Only a few places have left me speechless after taking my first bite. The Local General Store's macadamia frangipane croissant may just be one of the best croissant that I have ever had in my life. It is that good! Someone asked me, is the food here "Hawaii good" or Paris good... my response is, this is worldwide good. No joke. The Local General Store is special and local but could be anywhere in the world and still be outstanding. We had the macadamia frangipane croissant (5/5) and chocolate banana muffin (5/5) and both were mouth watering and just perfect. My favorite bite (and the one that blew me away) was the macadamia frangipane croissant. The crackly, crispy, buttery, and light croissant is the stuff of dreams. We also bought a breakfast sandwich (eggs, ham, cheese) to go and it was also delicious (5/5). I got a bag of jerky and think it's also a tasty meaty treat. The owners Harley and Jason are warm, friendly, and all around lovely people. I feel so fortunate to have met them and hope their new business venture thrives. There are window seats if you want to dine in and have a coffee with your pastry. And they will box your baked goods to go as well. The butcher shop was not open when we went. But from what I saw it looks very promising and gives a good excuse to return. I like that it's not just local meat but Oahu local meat. Honestly this place just makes me happy. Really really happy. I'll definitely return and tell all my family and friends to check it out! LOCATION: 5/5 FOOD: 5/5 SERVICE:5/5 VALUE: 5/5 AMBIANCE:5/5 PET FRIENDLY: yes CLEANLINESS: 5/5 PARKING: 5/5

Yelp
This bakery brings me so much happiness I could cry! I instantly forget about all my worries when I'm biting inside any pastry that Harley makes. Today we tried new pastries and the special weekend quiches which were AMAZING. So good we ordered more to eat later. Todays spread: -Pandan & Pistachio Braid -House Made Ham & Gruyere Croissant -Ho Farm Spigarello & Goat Cheese Quiche -House Made Bratwurst & Caramelized Onions Quiche -Double Chocolate Banana Bread Phenomenal pastries, friendly service, casual place to hangout, and more than just a "local general store!"

Yelp
Anything twice baked croissant is worth trying. I've tried their sandwiches and it's ok. Don't forget to look in the fridge on the right side of the butcher counter. They have premade things there to try. The worst part of this place is the lack of parking. Hoping they become successful to move to a better location with easier parking.

Yelp
The Local General Store was in its soft opening when we went. And we love that we got to stop in during our trip. Half the shop is a butcher shop and the other half is bakery. So it's a unique concept that I haven't seen befo The bakery side has unique croissant flavors. Since we were just looking for something light, we ordered only one croissant: twice baked macadamia nut frangipane with waiwi jam. The croissant was buttery and flaky with just the perfect amount of filling. We loved the pastries so much we went back for more pastries before we left Oahu. Shakshuka Danish. Runny egg with a savory spiced tomato paste. The pastry was so flaky. Pistachio frangipane and pandan pastry cream braid - the flavors were soo good. Definitely stop by if you're a fan of croissants

Yelp

Yelp
Do you like meat? Do you like pastries? If you said yes to at least one of these then this is the place for you. I've enjoyed their high quality meat cuts, sausages, ground beef, and friendly service. But I'll be honest, I was just left in awe at their baked goods program. Like you have a great great local butcher, and somehow you add a world class bakery? This is a no frills, local, take out place that really serves the goods. While they don't have seating, they have the goods. Their croissants and laminated pastries is what I have here. Let me tell you, these croissants are not just "Hawaii good" they are world class good. I'd put these up to any croissant I've had. 100% the best ones in Hawaii. I'm willing to take input if you believe anyone does it better, as long as you've tried here first. Do yourself a favor, stop by, support local, keep it Kaimuki, and grab some goods. Just save me some. Overall 9.5/10 outstanding!

Yelp
Stumbled upon this delightful gem while looking for coffee in the neighborhood - and found amazing pastries (and meats, too, though I didn't partake in that side of the house). Only 2 options for coffee: hot brewed 9$3.50) and cold brew ($4.50). No espresso drinks. I had the cold brew with a splash of cream, and it was delightful. My only complaint is that it wasn't enough caffeine compared to my daily morning home cup and I wound up with a bit of a headache later - nothing a cup of black tea couldn't fix, but be aware if you're sensitive to caffeine content. The pastries, though - WOW. So many interesting options. I went with Manoa Chocolate pain au chocolat with cacao nibs on top and tasted a friend's ginger/olena cookie. Both were amazing. The croissant shattered in a (good) way that I've only had happen in France and tasted of pure butter. The cookie was pleasantly flavorful and didn't sharply bite back as ginger sometimes does. They had an incredible selection in the pastry case. Traditional croissant, a spam and furikake pastry, macadamia frangipane croissant, guava and cream cheese pastry, a few cookies, and more. My coffee, pastry, and tip was about $10. The butchery side had house-made spam, stocks, bacon, chicken (whole and thighs), beef cuts of all kinds, and more. Prices seemed reasonable, especially these days. They share a patio with Mud Hen Water, so if the window seating inside is filled, you can eat out there. Or take things to go. Plenty of metered street parking available in the morning.

Yelp
First visit. Very friendly staff explained local meat sourcing and available options. Busy behind the counter but efficient ordering and short wait. Brought me so much joy to see so much going on, also busy with regulars popping in on a Sunday morning. Enjoyed the pastries and appreciated savory breakfast options. I will be certainly be craving the mushroom one and looking forward to returning to make meat purchases. Check out the fridge with prepared goods with more items to try.

Yelp
I've been wanting to try here for a while but could never make the farmers markets so I'm excited to see they have a store front! These pastries were out of this world good. As a frequent HALEKULANI bakery patron these pastries were on the same level as the 5 star hotel. We actually were eating both stores pastries and you wouldn't be able to tell where which was from. The only thing I would say about the chocolate ganache croissant is that it needed more chocolate in it. It had the standard two bars.

Yelp
After lunch at a nearby eatery, the group started talking about dessert. It was decided that we would go to TLGS. One of the group works in the same building as TLGS. It was later that I found out there later that they were a few parking stalls in the back of the store. The entrance is from Waialae Ave. The pastries were limited because we came after two o'clock. Interestingly, the store has pet snacks next to the humanly consumed products. My wife and I bought a bear claw, ginger bread cookie, and a cinnamon roll. The chocolate bear claw would have been better if eaten when we purchased it and not later that night. Light chocolate taste with a good crust. The ginger cookie had a good ginger taste. The texture was soft, but I prefer crispy. On to the cinnamon roll. It had a wiped cream cheese frosting. Good taste and texture, but my preference is sweet. Someone in our group said they make good sandwiches. I have to come back to confirm. Enjoy

Yelp
The croissants here are well made. Buttery & flakey like it should be. Got the chocolate banana muffin, the chocolate is a good quality chocolate, but it overpowers the banana. All I taste is chocolate. Ginger cookie is good & the chocolate chip was delicious thanks to the quality chocolate they used. I feel the service lacking, not really want to answer questions. The space is really small in there & the butcher shop is in the same place.

Yelp
Quaint little storefront sandwiched between 8th and 10th ave. Service was great. I ask for brisket, pre-sliced. Next day service. It was packaged well. Each pound was sectioned with butcher paper and made it easy for me to portion out at home. The skirt steak was trimmed and didn't need the silver skin to be removed- one thing I always dislike doing. Saved me a load of time. They were also portioned out and separated by some kind of butcher paper. I love it! Price was competitive. I will be back!

Yelp
This review is about the seasonal pre order Macadamia & Pecan pie (pre order for Thanksgiving) The pre ordering was easy and so was pick up. Smooth pick up... I was in and out in less than 5 mins. The pie was delicious! The sweetness is perfect. The crust is to die for. Adding the whipped creme that came with the pie (separately) was a perfect blend. I'm more of a pecan person versus Macadamia nuts so I'm not going to talk about the nuts because it'll be a bias personal opinion.
