The Best Restaurants and Bars to Eat and Drink in Bernal Heights | Eater SF

"A sweeping horseshoe-shaped bar faces patrons towards each other and points everyone toward the front of the Lucky Horseshoe. On nights when there’s music, the Lucky Horseshoe turns from locals’ “dedicated dive” into the best party in the neighborhood. Nights out in Bernal always involve live music at the Lucky Horseshoe, so plan accordingly." - Matt Tillquist

9 SF Bars & Restaurants With Live Music

"This Bernal Height dive bar is always crowded thanks to its lineup of weekly music events. Sundays bring a bluegrass jam, where local bands strum until last call, and Wednesdays feature multi-instrumentalist jazz sessions. Fridays draw the most people with karaoke night. The big horseshoe-shaped bar in the middle serves habañero margaritas that perk us up as well as a triple-shot espresso. And if you want a little more entertainment, there’s a pool table in the back." - julia chen 1, ricky rodriguez, patrick wong

The 8 Best Karaoke Bars In San Francisco

"The Lucky Horseshoe is where to sing rock, punk, or oldies of any kind. This Bernal Heights dive bar is a beacon of energy on an otherwise quiet street, and on Fridays, their karaoke shakes the whole neighborhood. There’s a big stage, so don’t come here if you have stage fright, but do come prepared to sing a power ballad with your best friend. You’ll fill out a white card with your name and song request and deliver it to the karaoke DJ—just don’t be surprised if you’re lightly nudged to order another round when you get your card. The 10 Best Margaritas in San Francisco, Ranked

"Drink: Habanero Margarita The habanero margarita at this Bernal Heights dive bar is the best spicy margarita in the city. While it’s definitely a bit on the sweeter side, the thick habanero sauce adds a slow-burning heat to the drink that we loved. We even went back to the bartender and begged them to add more, so just ask for extra on your first go-around and save yourself time. " - ricky rodriguez

The Lucky Horseshoe Review - Bernal Heights - San Francisco - The Infatuation

"If you find yourself in Bernal Heights with nothing to do, head to The Lucky Horseshoe. This dive bar is a beacon of nightlife energy on an otherwise quiet street, thanks to weekly live music events like a Sunday bluegrass jam and the Wednesday night jazz jam. There’s a pool table in the back where there’s always a game going, and a big horseshoe-shaped bar in the middle that serves surprisingly good habañero margaritas. On Friday there’s a karaoke night perfect for belting out oldies." - Ricky Rodriguez

Not a very good experience, especially when you come with people of color. You can feel the vibe is off which is quite sad because when this was skips tavern everyone was very welcome

Google
My new favorite dive bar in the city. A great blues band was playing the night we went and the atmosphere was fun and full of happiness. Excellent and creative cocktails (the Bee's Knees and the ginger cocktail are very much recommended). Service was exceptional, we'll be definitely coming back! Love this place, A+++

Google
Relaxed environment that's usually not too crowded. Live bluegrass music on Sundays and kareoke on Fridays. Fair selection of drinks at decent prices with a good selection of house cocktails. They have a pool table thats first come first serve. Come here if you're looking to hang with the locals.

It’s hard to find any reason not to like a neighborhood bar like this. Bart tender Mike was great to chat with is just making it more fun to patronize the place

KJ Ted is the best. Great neighborhood bar karaoke!

Yelp
The Lucky Horseshoe is a no frills dive bar with a pool table, fun Friday night karaoke, and TVs to catch the game, plus a parklet space out front to cool off. Drinks are pretty reasonable by SF standards, and the bartenders and patrons are great. Karaoke nights are especially fun!

Yelp
Great legit dive bar on the fun Cortland Street. Nice selection of beers on tap, cider, and cocktails. It's all you want in a bar--dark with tiny little booths and a good bar tender, and fair prices. On Sundays they have a bluegrass jam that is super fun!

Laurence S.

Yelp
Always fun to catch my San Francisco games here! They even have some old seats from Candlestick Park! My favorite live show had to be Fleetwood Macrame

Yelp
I wandered into this place a couple weeks ago looking to enjoy a beer after work. I came in alone and just sat at the bar, after a few minutes I noticed the cash only sign and left to grab some cash at the nearby ATM. I used to come here many years ago with an old boss who loved dive bars, he would be happy to know that this place hasn't changed. It's now due for some renovations and needs a little help. The service was just okay, nothing special and not very welcoming. After I finished my beer, I left a tip and left.

Yelp
Haven't been here in awhile forgot that ghost place use to be Skips. Drinks were on point, my only complaint is get the Jukebox working.

Yelp
Wonderful little local spot!! The bar was circular round and the center of the room. The cocktails were amazing and nothing too out of the norm of options. Friendly locals were there at the bar and pool table. We played pool a few hours! There's one table in the back. Apparently they have karaoke Friday evenings too! Would go back.

Yelp
A very nice and low key dive bar. My wife and I came here one Saturday in the early evening. There were only a handful of customers and almost as many tvs playing college football. The staff is friendly and pretty fast. They're not terribly well versed in different mixed drinks, but who cares? It's a small dive bar, not a high brow cocktail lounge. The only real negative is the price for beer, a bit high $4-5 per bottle. There is a small area where music is played and a pool table, so it's got everything you need to waste a few hours on a slow night out. TL;DR: Good dive bar.

Yelp
Second stop on a bar crawl of sorts through Bernal Heights. We had just done a bottomless brunch, so I decided to continue on with beer. My group of four stopped by on Saturday, March 10th around 4:30pm. It wasn't too busy, so we easily grabbed four seats at the bar. I got a Trumer Pils on tap while my girlfriend got a Deschutes. The boys decided to get cocktails instead. One a Bloody Mary and the other The Kitten Hugger: bourbon, cassis, bitters and fresh lime. I have no idea how much the drinks were, but the sign said the Kitten Hugger was $8. He didn't seem to enjoy the cocktail, but my beer was fine. The bloody came with a few accoutrements such as carrots, onions, a green bean, and lime. The atmosphere is dark and kinda divey. We were here for one round, so about an hour. A very chill spot to have a drink and just hang out. I believe there was a pool table in the back if you'd like to play a game. We just sat at the bar and talked. Good second stop after a boozy brunch. Just remember to bring those dollar bills as The Lucky Horseshoe is cash only.

Yelp
Karaoke Fridays are a hoot. The crowd, the Dj and the bartender are all awesome. Check them out.

Yelp
How much do I love this bar? Very very much! It's got that classic old-school San Francisco flavor. It's not another dull tech bro bar. It's a very friendly dicey neighborhood bar. Also racially diverse and when I say that I mean ALL races not just two races and it's all ages from 21 to up to 70! The bartenders are personable the live music is boppin' and guess what else! A basic glass of white wine is a cool $7! Instead of $11 that some bars have the nerve to try to charge for basic house white wine. Currently I am very loyal to this bar.

Yelp
This place always feels unwelcoming by the staff. Leading up to the new vaccine mandates coming on the 20th, decided to stop by before its to late. Who would of ever guessed a place that was known for not following Covid guidelines well during pandemic, would suddenly make it their own policy to check for vax proof? Hmm interesting. I just find it funny how I needed to walk in and have a seat to get told I need proof vax to be there. If it was that serious for y'all, you would have a big sign at the door, or someone at the front before customers came in. Well guess what?you just let an unvaccinated individual come in and contaminate your air, seating area, and space. Tsk tsk.. it's just worse getting told this by depressed sounding staff member that looks like they don't want to be there. Very glad i didn't spend my dollars there.

Yelp
Very friendly environment. Nice bar with decent selection of beer and liquor. Has a lot of bar seating and a pool table. Excellent bar tender..she was very attentive, fast service, and very sweet. She put game on for us which was very nice of her. A lot of screens, good speakers, and comfortable seating. Clean, chill environment. There is an ATM available inside which is very convenient. The bathroom is not very clean.

Yelp
This is a great dive for a casual beer or cocktail! I love the old-timey, rough around the edges feel of The Lucky Horseshoe-it's downright charming! There's an old Jukebox and a pool table in the back to add to the aesthetic. They have a great cocktail menu and super reasonably priced! It's only about $8-$10 per cocktail. The clientele are mellow and seem really friendly. Every Sunday there's a Bluegrass Jam so there's live music, which just adds to the charm of the place. To top it all off, the cocktails taste great too. I'd say the only downside is that the Lucky Horseshoe is cash only, but that's relatively common for bars in Bernal Heights.

Yelp
My artist was Gil. He was fucking FANTASTIC! I got hos business card and talked about my next tattoo while getting this one done! Definitely more than a 5 star rating!
google avatar

Yelp
The bar us shaped like a horse shoe! HA. I love hanging out here. I usually come to see Fleetwood Macramay and the place is packed. Theres pool and good bar service. Titos is a lil on the pricey side, but they do have cheap beers
google avatar

Rebecca R.

Yelp
I come to this bar pretty regularly but have never thought to write a review. I always have a good time, but saw Fleetwood Macramé on Saturday night, and it was off the hook! The band was amazing, the vibe was awesome with everyone singing and dancing - and I mean everyone, not just the people on the dance floor, but on chairs and benches. It was so much fun!! The drinks are good, like, proper cocktails, so for the price I think they're really reasonably priced. In other bars good cocktails are usually 3 or 4 dollars more. They have a pool table, the bartenders are friendly and fast, and when there's not super fun entertainment, it's a super nice mellow place to chill at the bar.

Yelp
Of the 3 neighborhood Bernal bars, this is home. I know the regulars, the friendly staff, and I feel very comfy here. DrinkyPoos are reasonably priced and usually poured quickly. Fridays (Karaoke night) can get busy, so you may have to wait 2-3 minutes to order. I like the fact there are 6 big screen tvs. Makes watching sports easy. During playoff times, everyone's teams are accommodated. Stop by, say hi. I'm here 3-4 times a week.

Denis Y.

Yelp
First time here. Mainly to catch the Warriors playoff game on a Friday Karaoke night. As I got gout (no beer), had a House Red. Pretty good. Watch Bartender worked smoothly and tended to crowd well. Crowd very friendly. Got pool table. Karaoke started after game finished. Wow! Good singers. Other night got live band. Overall, nice place with great ambience. Will be back! Love live music.

Yelp
I'm not from around the area and it was pretty clear the second I walked in, however, 5 minutes later it didn't matter. This place is older and dives, in the best way. It's clear there are a lot of locals who are in often and that the people here like their Budweiser. That doesn't mean they don't have good craft beer on draft (missing in a lot of similar dives). The billiards table was full and seems to be the place to be. I was happy because two cocktails were running in the $12-13 range and multiple TVs displayed sports. It's worth coming in for a strong and reasonably priced drink, sports, and maybe even live music if you're lucky.
google avatar

Yelp
Good neighborhood dive that's tied with Knockout and El Rio for karaoke. Sometimes hits on Fridays. Cool KJ, but not as much of a scene as Slate and Butter.
google avatar

Patrick H.

Yelp
Fantastic family bar. Great staff. Bloody Mary's are amazing. Staple for the neighborhood
google avatar

Yelp
This bar is good enough to conjure a man from the fog of The Sunset all the way to a Bernal Heights bar stool. Black sorcery at its finest. I've been here for many a pint, a game of pool, and a song to sing. The decor features relics of past history and modern artists (Randy O'Dell's cat painting). Many of the patrons are from the neighborhood, but there are still some of us that will travel for the varied beer list and good conversation. Also, the bloody marys use ingredients from Paulie's Pickling down the street and they are fantastic!
google avatar

Jared L.

Yelp
On TWO occasions, I've walked in here and waited at the bar for like 10 minutes, before leaving. It wasn't crowded either night, and on both occasions, the bar tender had seen me, and wasn't helping anyone else. I certainly did not feel welcomed. I got dragged in a third time to see a band covering the music of the Pouges--a band maybe I never fully got into, but one I respect. I had a better time on this occasion. On the fourth time here, I saw a very drunk man perform a version of Third Eye Blind's Semi-Charmed Life, even going as far to add freestyled verses during what typically instrumental parts. I guess I've had mixed experiences here, but I will say, this is the place if you're looking for live bar music.

Yelp
Fun open karaoke spot on Friday nights! Im more into the private room karaoke but this place has made me rethink that. Super fun and great ambiance

Yelp
A couple weeks ago my friend suggested I join him for a Sunday afternoon bluegrass jam - we carpooled to Bernal Hts, and despite getting distracted by the shop across the street (separate review, people!) - I found my way back into the Lucky Horseshoe where my friend was already rocking out on his bass. In fact - there were like 4 non musicians including the bartender and at one point - 8 musicians - jamming away, acoustic and rocking out. It was really fun! The bar staff were friendly, efficient and very professional. Though I only had beer - I cannot attest to mixed drinks - they did also have a taco bar and I heard someone raving about their bloody mary or some rum punch or something. The bathrooms are quite nice for a dive bar - clean and decorated with loads of framed pictures of Marilyn Monroe. Nice spot - I look forward to returning there for another afternoon bluegrass jam!
google avatar

Yelp
Stopped in for a refreshing beverage and enjoyed the ambience. A funny sign was posted about the customer always being right. Very casual and a friendly bartender.
google avatar

Stefanie L.

Yelp
Great little watering hole with killer live music. They have karaoke on Friday nights, a pool table, popcorn and bartenders with awesome tastes in music. They also have multiple tvs to play all the sportsball you need.
google avatar

Carla F.

Yelp
I would, rate it a 1 star but the bartender (cute red beard) was nice and his drinks were great! Came in on a Sunday as we were strolling in the neighborhood looking for a place to watch the 49er/Packer game. They shut off the TV's after "The Band" was set up and ready to play. There was 5 mins left. Really? 4 stars go to the bartender.... Deuces
google avatar

Yelp
An absolute gem! I've spent many of nights drinking picklebacks here. They get their pickle juice from Paulie's pickles down the street, it's a great zesty flavor.
google avatar

Ayall S.

Yelp
This is a really cool bar in Bernal Heights. Place has a small bar / dive-ish ambiance, but place is clean. Plenty of great beers on draft, good seating around the oval center-bar and additional seating in corners/pockets of the bar. Also has a pool table. The staff is very friendly and the drinks are inexpensive.
google avatar

Jane D.

Yelp
Went into this place about a week ago. Has a pool table and chill crowd. Really turned off by that woman there, she totally gave me bad vibes. She seems crazy, what's her deal? Super unprofessional and not cool getting shitfaced when you're at work... Couldn't figure out if she was the owner or manager- but either way, what a creep. Never again, stick to the mission dive bars!
google avatar

Paul d.

Yelp
The Lucy Horseshoe is one of the many amazing Bernal gems! I love coming here on a Friday night for some Bartman Karaoke! Bartman is an amazing karaoke host. He makes you sound great, has a fun light show and the crowd dances and sings along. It is one of my favorite things to do on a Friday night. The local regulars are super nice. You can tell who they are because they are in the painting that hangs above the jukebox. Sunday afternoon blue grass and Wednesday night blues are also good times. Touring bands on Saturday night. They also have Grolsh in clip cap bottles...I grew up near that brewery:).
google avatar

Mike G.

Yelp
Cash Only is my only complaint. They have a decent beer selection. But I'm semi impressed with their whiskey selection, not too shabby. Too bad, I only have enough cash on my to get beer (There is a ATM machine, but I refuse to pay for withdraw fees) Good neighborhood dive bar to watch the game, especially when the Dubs are playing.
google avatar

Ben W.

Yelp
The worst part about getting evicted from Bernal Heights in 2014 wasn't losing my apartment. It was having to move away from the Lucky Horseshoe. I've been a patron, music performer and part-time employee at the bar and take pride in knowing the LH was and is my gem in San Francisco's small, neighborhood bar scene--especially around the Mission/Bernal/Glen Park-areas. Free, live music several nights a week, legendary Friday Night Karaoke, and a neighborhood vibe that reminds us of the San Francisco we loved before the tech invasion. I'm building a tunnel from Guerneville to the Lucky Horseshoe. That's how much I love it there.
google avatar

tod f.

Yelp
Super Fun. Good pool culture. The mission feel. Punches above it's weight but not too crowded. Booths in a tight layout.
google avatar

Peter C.

Yelp
Great neighboorhood bar. Nothing fancy. Good beers and drinks. Generally have most sporting events available on the TVs which are good. Live music is also available. Pros: Great people watching. My neighbors and I are always here. So its your chance to see Bernal residents in their natural environs Cheap Sometimes they have boiled hot dogs Cons: Live music is generally bad. But sometimes hilarity ensues
google avatar

Avi B.

Yelp
Great bar, often with excellent live music. I love the unusual horseshoe shape of the bar, and the drinks are well-made and reasonably priced. Unpretentious, and good vibes all around.
google avatar

Raja D.

Yelp
I really liked this place. Has a wide variety of beers from around the world in bottle. Also various local beers on tap. The Food looked amazing, I did not have any, but the other customers could not stop talking about it. Also, it's a great place to watch sports and I will definitely come back.
google avatar

Yelp
Lisa has done a great job after she took over this place! Great menu and good people hanging around. Good ambiance and try the French gimlet if you can!

Yelp
3.5 We rent randomly on a Saturday night. The live band, with the lead singer that sounded like Bonnie Raitt, was really good. That lady could play a guitar. There was a stage and some space in front to dance, a pool table in the back and a big oval bar in the middle. The crowd was a mix of older and young people, and it was sufficiently divey for me. The people in general were much drunker than we were. The drinks were stiff, which is good and explains a lot, but I found the maple bacon bourbon undrinkable. I didn't taste any maple, bacon, or the lovely sweetness of bourbon, just alcohol. My friend was satisfied with her Jameson and ginger, so maybe keep it simple. I would go back to play pool, listen to a live band, and drink beer.
google avatar

Lasalete S.

Yelp
Super fun karaoke on Friday night. Wish I lived closer. I'd be here more often. Amy is awesome - she makes the best cocktails. Nate and Ted are super friendly. I love koozie tuesday! My pool team practices here regularly and the table is in great condition.
google avatar

Martin R.

Yelp
Awesome dive bar with great, unique crowd and good cheap drinks. Friday is Karaoke and it's a good time.
google avatar

Christopher J.

Yelp
We were here Saturday night - Scavenger Hunt Pub Crawl - Nearly 20 of us. Both the bartenders and the patrons were friendly, welcoming, and really enjoyed as our 4 scavenger hunt teams interacted with random strangers. It was a 2 1/2 hour hunt spread across a number of bars and this one was great. The drinks were decent and well priced, the 'neighborhood' ambience was awesome, and it was just a simple bar doing its own thing. The scavenger hunt was not soley items, it was interactions as well (i.e. Challenge a stranger to arm wrestle, challenge a stranger to chug a drink against you, group hug a stranger... all kinds of things like that which required picture evidence). The folks in this bar were totally on board! Fun, friendly, good atmosphere, non-pretentious... what more could you want?
google avatar

Cee G.

Yelp
The LH, is a such a great place to catch a sports game with several TV'S in all angles to catch your eye. The drinks and drink specials are always great options if you're not sure what you would like to drink. But the best thing overall is the ambiance, customer service and the weekend entertainment. Friday night Karaoke is the best way to bring friends of all walks of life to let their hair down and just have fun. The live bands are also a great addition because not many neighborhood bars have these options. Another great thing to add is hosting B-Day parties or any celebrations, if you e-mail ahead (check website) and mention you have a large party they will reserve a booth for you and your guests. Parking is really easy at night. This is my go to bar!
google avatar

Victoria F.

Yelp
A neighborhood favorite! Tasty drinks (try the Kitten Hugger), awesome staff, great music and an all-around good vibe.
google avatar

anita e.

Yelp
The beer selection is always rotating and there is something for everyone, the watermelon mojitos are mouth watering and the service is fast. The bartenders and owner are all full of personality and fun to be around and the live music is great. The drinks are reasonably priced too. This is my favorite bar on the Cortland Strip hands down.
google avatar

Crystal R.

Yelp
I never really thought I would go out in Bernal Heights. Not that there's anything wrong with it, it's just a little out of the way and the crowd is a bit older and more mature, which is a contrast to my high levels of immaturity. I will say that I had a nice time at Lucky Horseshoe, though I felt a little odd when the bartender described the beers on tap, "Racer 5, that's an IPA, Bear Republic, that's an IPA, Blue Moon, that's a Witbier". Yes, it was nice of him, it's just not my first rodeo. I ended up having the Moscow Mule which was disappointingly weak. The ginger beer in it was very refreshing though, so that was nice. There was a live country band playing Patsy Cline which was awesome, but my more aggressive friends started getting rowdy, proclaiming to me that "they don't live in Texas" and therefore cannot listen to country (???). Anywho, the bar was extremely warm, but when the door was opened, the stench of cigarettes overwhelmed me. After we finished one drink, we decided to head elsewhere. I may go back with just one friend as the vibe was mellow, it's just not the "usual" kind of place my crew would pick on a Saturday night when they are apparently trying to get "hyphy."

Yelp
Had such a great time here! Amazing live music and a wonderful community of fun casual earnest patrons. And a great pool table to boot. Will definitely be coming back!
