Last night my wife and I went to dinner at Margarita at Pine Creek for our wedding anniversary. Since we were wanting a nicer dinner and enjoy a coursed meal from time to time, this seemed like a good choice, especially since it had been a few years since our last visit.
We made an early dinner reservation and were seated quickly once we arrived. Shortly after, two women were sat at a table on the other side of the room. Their server appeared and gave them the usual spiel, asking if they had been in before and pouring them water. Their server waxed on about how she had worked there for some thirty-five years and then came her "subtle" micro-aggression, saying something to the effect of them obviously "not being a Mexican restaurant, thank goodness!" Unsure about what she meant by this, my wife, who is Mexican herself, fought back tears for a majority of the meal and both of us teetered back and forth on whether we should even stay for a meal. I offered up that maybe she had said that because it wasn't the restaurant's specialty and not because perhaps she believed fine dining was not a place for Mexican food. And yet on the back of the menu we found "birria" which, of course, is a dish with roots in Mexico.
Ultimately, we stayed for a meal and a bottle of wine, though we both had a sort of sense of regret about doing so this morning when we discussed it. At best, the food was lackluster with a less than innovative menu. Our own server did a fine job, but the best service came from the gentleman who brought us our wine. Considering the price point and the opinions of their long-lasting employee, I can't say that this is a restaurant we'll be returning to.
