The Marker, a San Francisco Hotel

"Why did this hotel catch your attention? What's the vibe? It's all about the mix at The Marker, a quintessential Beaux-Arts building in downtown San Francisco where the lobby has a mix of contemporary and jewel-toned furniture, and whimsical light fixtures. It embodies that contemporary and sexy vibe that makes so many people fall in love with San Francisco. What's the backstory? Opened in 1910 as the Bellevue Hotel, the premises has a long history of welcoming visitors to SF. But when it re-opened in 2018 as The Marker designed by Perkins + Will, a new era began. Tell us all about the accommodations. Any tips on what to book? The rooms are decorated with expressive pops of color, statement walls, and a collection of furniture that seems to know no decade. Expect a typical tech setup for city hotel: a work desk with power outlets, multi-line phone, LCD TV's, and irons to press your shirt in time for your next meeting. Is there a charge for Wi-Fi? No charge. And seeing as the hotel gets lots of business travelers, the Wi-Fi is nice and fast. Drinking and dining—what are we looking at? Tratto was our favorite part of The Marker experience, a lively spot serving rustic Italian cuisine and a bustling happy hour scene. Don't skip breakfast while you're here - the Stracotto Hash with braised beef, potatoes, fennel, citrus and balsamic demi glace was indulgent, yet worth every bite. And the service? The staff here are much less pretentious than a number of the city's more high-end hotels, and it's refreshing to visit a one that doesn't take itself so seriously. Make sure to ask the front desk for their restaurant tips - they're likely to point you towards some real local gems as opposed to the well-worn tourist spots. What type of travelers will you find here? Thanks to its reasonable rates as far (by city standards anyway), The Marker attracts a lot of both solo and business travelers. Stick around in the lobby for a few minutes and you're likely to overhear someone talking about a new restaurant they tried, or a gallery they visited - there's a sense of conviviality here that you won't find in more hushed, exclusive places.  What about the neighborhood? Does the hotel fit in, make itself part of the scene? The hotel has been a seamless part of this neighborhood since it was built a century ago. It is located only steps away from Union Square, Market Street, popular institutions such as the Asian Art Museum, and the Theater District. Is there anything you'd change? The entry-level queen rooms are very small, at just 220 square feet. Any other hotel features worth noting? The hotel does a fair number of conferences and business meetings. Each of the the 18 meeting spaces are named after classic film noir characters inspired by Dashiell Hammett's "The Maltese Falcon," including Spade, Bogart, Falcon and Hammett. Also, those who prefer to stay fit while traveling will be glad to hear that each room comes with its own yoga mat, and free bike rentals help you cruise around and explore the city with ease. Bottom line: Worth it? Why? Yep. For the price and the location, The Marker is a compelling value proposition." - Todd Plummer

In a city like San Francisco, where hotels are seemingly on every corner, choosing the right one can be overwhelming. My best friend and I were planning a spontaneous getaway and had a checklist: great value, welcoming service, safety, cleanliness, and style. We found all of that—and more—at The Marker.||From the moment I called the hotel, I was warmly welcomed by Geo, the Assistant Front Office Manager, whose kindness and professionalism immediately set The Marker apart. While the online photos and reviews were impressive, it was Geo’s genuine hospitality that sealed the deal for me. He went above and beyond to ensure every aspect of our reservation, stay, and checkout was flawless.||We were in town celebrating a birthday, and the thoughtful touches made all the difference. Upon arrival, Bianca at the front desk surprised us with a complimentary bottle of wine and gourmet popcorn, and even accommodated an early check-in—no small feat on one of the city’s busiest weekends. These personal touches made us feel truly valued.||Our room, featuring two double beds, exceeded expectations: stylish decor, pristine cleanliness, plush linens, and plenty of space. The overall vibe of the hotel is chic yet welcoming, and the pricing felt more than fair for the experience. Valet parking was a convenient bonus that made our stay even more seamless.||What stood out most was the exceptional level of hospitality. Every staff member we encountered was professional, sincere, and eager to help. Geo, in particular, provided a level of service that rivals any five-star property—he truly made us feel like VIPs.||Without a doubt, I’ve found my go-to hotel in San Francisco. Thank you to The Marker team for a memorable and delightful stay. I can’t wait to return!

The hotel itself is beautiful and well kept. The woman that checked us in was very warm and friendly as well as the rest of the staff. Inside there's an Italian restaurant with a bar which is nice. For anyone visiting for the first time, I was a bit taken aback by the state of the neighborhood we stayed in and would probably avoid staying here if I were to visit again. That is not the fault of the hotel of course and only bring it up as a precaution. The parking situation felt sketchy to us so we decided to use valet which is $75 for a smaller vehicle and $85 for larger. Valet was really easy and quick! Worth the cost. Overall this place is a nice choice if you need to be in the area

We stayed for 10 nights at the Marker hotel San Francisco. Everything was great during our stay. Blanca at reception was so helpful and polite. She had a kettle sent to our room and upgraded us to a fantastic room on the 7 the 7th floor. It had a fridge and was spacious and quiet at the back of the hotel. Every morning there is free tea and coffee from 7am until 10am, this was brilliant as I love my tea in the mornings. Also there are water refilling stations around the hotel and they give guests free flasks that you can fill up. I would definitely recommend this hotel, it’s safe, comfortable and is in a very good location for exploring the city. We were able to walk leisurely to Fisherman’s Wharf in about 35/40 minutes (a few uphills, but doable).

A comfortable, clean hotel with relaxing atmosphere just situated within walking distance of many attractions. Although some roads are steep, we managed a leisurely walk from the hotel via Taylor Street to the Fisherman's Wharf under 40 minutes. Union square is close by. It was interesting to visit the Ferry Building and its food stalls . A hop on hop off bus tour on our first 2 days just laid out the areas to see and the distances associated with them. Market street and Powell str Bart station is close by. When we checked in we were upgraded to a kingsize room on the 7th floor which was extra nice. Room was spacious and relatively quiet. Hotel staff were lovely, helpful and very accommodating. Complimentary tea and coffee is offered in the mornings at the restaurant which helped us start the day. We requested a kettle in our room and this was gladly provided by the hotel. Water drinking stations were available to refill water bottles in various places within the hotel. At the Marker hotel we felt safe and looked after. Highly recommended.

The staff were very friendly at every point. I enjoyed the cleanliness and the complimentary wine pass at check in. The hotel was great for the price. Keep in mind it is downtown so there is a higher presence of homeless individuals but no one ever approached us in a concerning way. I only wish the hotel had better parking but we were able to find a good spot right next door for $40 a night. Overall I would recommend and would stay here again.

Google
I love this hotel. It is in the middle of San Francisco and it feels like a fairytale. The employees were all very friendly and nice. The room was spacious and very clean. The only minus would be the shower. It was not much warm water in the morning and the bathroom y cold. Luckily I used the hairdryer so I didn’t get a cold. The bed was very comfortable and the room was very cozy. We also got 2 water bottles in a very nice design in steel, I think. I would definitely come back. They have a detective dinner here as well, but we didn’t stay here long enough to join it. Seems very funny.

Google
I was honestly a bit worried given it is located adjacent to the infamous Tenderloin district, but to my pleasant surprise, the hotel is very clean, well appointed with friendly staff. Though slightly dated, with no frills, the rooms are immaculately clean, making it clear there is a high standard of service and while small, the gym is serviceable. While you do not want to make a left coming out of the hotel, I did not ever feel unsafe the 3 nights I stayed for business and all at a very reasonable rate. Would return.

Excellent Stay – Highly Recommended! We had a wonderful stay at this centrally located hotel. The spacious lobby area created a welcoming atmosphere, and the reception staff were exceptionally friendly and accommodating. Despite our delayed arrival by a day, they kindly refunded the missed night upon request, which we truly appreciated. Our room was cleaned thoroughly every day, and the beds were very comfortable. Overall, a fantastic experience – we would definitely stay here again on our next visit!

Yelp
Staff is so friendly and the space to get work done in between is just ideal. Tables even have outlets. Got upgraded to a suite which was giving fairytale vibe as well as a complimentary welcome drink at their onsite restaurant. Really enjoyed the stay.

Yelp
I was very excited to stay at The Marker, arriving on 12/15. When plans changed I phoned at 10 am on 12/13 to cancel the reservation. I was provided a cancellation confirmation number by the front desk. I have phoned 7 times (disconnected 3x) after a 'no show' charge showed up on my Amex. I phoned on 12/27 and was told they were 'escalating' this to their accounting department. Crickets. I phoned again today and was again told they were 'escalating' this to their accounting department. After so many calls I demanded their 'accounting' department phone back today. Crickets. Do not trust their cancellation policy and check your credit card statements. This is beyond a scam. I have already reported to numerous platforms and disputed the charge, but this isn't the way 'hospitality' should work. I was very much excited for my stay there but feel like I dodged a bullet. Buyers beware.

Yelp
Beware of Hidden Fees!!! Is $94 a night for a 4.5 star hotel in downtown San Francisco too good to be true? No, but beware of the hidden fees. Hotel was beautiful, the rooms were as advertised. Had a modern Harry Potter sitting room that was gorgeous. A sit in fireplace in the rear of the lobby with a magical ambiance. The restaurant (Tratto) was a overall nice and classy Italian vibe. Too bad I found out the workers added a tip for themselves after my takeout order. The hotel fees includes tax for $94. /night and parking was an additional $75 a night for valet or $45 in the alley garage in the street next to the hotel. Room may come with a credit but there was only a few food menu items for $25. There was also a destination fee of $35 which if you are not careful you could be charged twice. The advertised $94 a night hotel turned into $150 at the desk in which they eventually billed me for total charges of $171. All in all would I stay here again? Not on purpose when there are so many other reasonable options near by. Sticking with my Marriott Bonvoy loyalty from now on at least I know what I'm getting ahead of my stay with no surprises.

Yelp
Huge Disappointment for such a good looking hotel, but as our trip proved... looks can be deceiving. It all started with the initial purchase of the hotel. Before I clicked submit, it was brought to my attention that it would be a good idea to stay at a hotel that had complimentary parking, to avoid the issues with street parking. So I called the hotel and was told by a sweet women, that there was complimentary Valet. So with that information, I was sold, and I booked the reservation. Fast forward to the check in, I went to get the car parked by them and they wanted to charge $75+ (per night), something which was not discussed over the phone and also something the valet person commented on as well saying "the prices are steep here for sure". Of course their hospitality was completely off, because when I brought up the information I was told about parking on the phone (to the front desk), they just stared, and were like "yeah, anyways". So we found a wonderful lot full of nice people right around the corner (not associated with the hotel at all). Now the parking attendants at the other place definitely knew what hospitality was. But, we are talking about the hotel and its staff now. Anyways, cut to the check - in, they asked for a card for incidentals, from a weds night check in to saturday morning check out it was a $225 deposit charge, (completely fine, but I did ask if there were any other charges that I should be aware of on my card, and he said no, so I trusted him, regardless of what happened with the parking situation, I thought "new face, fresh leaf" Nope, and you will find out why at the end. Anyways, the horror story keeps going...we had a lot of bags, yet their concierge didn't even offer to help, you just have to grab a cart and haul the stuff yourself. By the way, none of them smile, they just stare at you and look like they want to die or maybe they were homophobic, because that is what they came across as being, must be a horrible working environment too. We get up to the room and they didn't even leave a light on for check - in, completely pitch black in the room, so you have to spend time trying to find a switch to get some light (I don't frequent Motel 6, but at least they keep the light on for you!)... Anyways, the pictures below will show you everything you need to know. But just so you know there were stains everywhere (walls, curtains, carpets), spiderwebs in the corner of the room, the headboard was mickey moused to the wall and had screws hanging off of it, the mirror had scratch marks all on the bottom, and the bed sheet (or duvet, if that's what they want to call it) was torn. It was a sight not wanted to see upon checking in and waking up to... just to find more issues. The faucet alone sounded like a ship docking everytime you turned it on (like a horn blowing, it rattled the bathroom everytime it was flowing water), it felt like we were waking up the whole neighborhood. Once we realized our fate with the hotel, we decided, let us just enjoy the city, and forget about this (4-star hotel, they say it on their website or wherever, but from the looks and feel of the hotel, as well as their reviews on yelp... they probably buy their stars) Well we checked out on saturday and drove back to los angeles. By the time I got home, I was charged $119 on my card, for a destination fee... $35-$39 a day. What a joke! (especially because they guy at check in originally said that I would not be charged any other fees. Just a simple bate and switch situation. I feel like the destination fee is what you pay (for the room), hence a hotel being in the destination you wanted to be at "on vacation" I have never heard of a destination's destination charge... I've heard of a resort fee, but honey, this was no resort. This was my boyfriends first time in San Francisco, and this was embarrassing and mortifying in all aspects of the words. Anyways, enjoy the pictures, and just know that the stains, tears, smudges, scratches, and sounds are all included in your destination charge.

Yelp
BEWARE: IF YOU HAVE A BAD STAY HERE, YOU WILL NOT GET YOUR MONEY BACK. Although this hotel is technically four-star and has beautiful design and decor (quite frankly, the only reason why it gets a second star), I was very disappointed with my stay due to the lack of attention to detail in all aspects. To start, when I finally fully uncovered my sheets after getting ready for bed (after my initial bed bug inspection I always do when I first arrive), I felt uneasy finding a hair that was not mine in-between the sheets. It looked like it had been there a while first. Because it was late, I decided to sleep on top of the comforter for the night and call the next morning for replacements while I'm out for the day. The next morning before I left my room, I tried to call the front desk 4 times in 15 minutes, and did not get an answer a single time. A couple hours later, I was able to call again to politely let the front desk know about the sheets, and respectfully ask for new ones. I was granted new ones, but was not provided any remorse, sympathy, or even acknowledgement of my situation. Although it wasn't their fault, it's definitely not mine either. Later that night, I wanted to use the hotel's fitness room (the only amenity making this hotel 4-star, btw), and was disappointed yet again to find that the cable machine had no clips to attach handlebars! I wanted to use the Pelaton they had since I missed mine at home, but it wasn't even activated! Both issues made both machines practically useless, respectively. The hotel restaurant was closed for dinner BOTH nights I stayed here as well. Everything aforementioned in addition to the weird writing hidden in the bathroom wallpaper in my room, the poor location of the hotel, the VERY expensive parking the hotel has contracted with, lack of pool/spa/coffee shop, and more not mentioned made the resort fee a joke. I definitely think you're better off staying a couple blocks in a better direction at Parc 55 or even something in the Marina. EDIT: After providing the Marker with my stay and contact information, the Director of Rooms at the Marker emailed me to follow-up on the claims I made in my initial post. Although acknowledgement was made to the lack of quality of my stay AND changes were made due to address issues to the hotel I, as a guest, pointed out (mentioned explicitly by DoR), I was not provided any refund for: my room that did not meet expectations set by the Marker, the resort fee for the "resort" with missing or dysfunctional fitness equipment and no pool/spq, AND/OR the extra $70 I paid for parking. You're better off spending your money at a place with more customer-centered business practices that commits to promises they make.

Yelp
I'm surprised this hotel doesn't have more stars. Truth be told, the neighborhood could use a lot of work. But when you pull up the hotel (it's on the left side of the one way street), you feel a bit comforted! Beautiful flowers are hanging and surround the entrance and a valet stand reassures me that I can hop out of the car and check in. The check in process was simple and the gentleman helping me was fast and efficient. When I hopped on the elevator I quickly realized that I needed my room key to get up to the floor I was staying on. Nice safety feature. However, when I was leaving I forgot my key in my room and had to walk down 5 flights of stairs with my luggage and maneuver my way throw the area in the back by the kitchen for the restaurant. Not a big deal but not fun and somewhat scary. One thing I found particularly awesome was the free margarita in my fridge and candied walnuts and another little treat. The room and bathroom were perfect size and very clean! It's about 25-30 min to SFO and about 20 to the Chase Center.

Yelp
I really enjoyed my stay. Everything went smoothly. I was in town to see Madonna, and I was suprised by an Expedia promotion that presented me with a complimentary bottle of wine, all for me! So, while I don't drink much I accepted it with pleasure. I found the room perfectly adequate, quiet, and had everything I needed. The quality of the sheets and bed comfort were top notch. I got a good night's sleep. I would stay here again.

Yelp
This non-descript building located just outside the Tenderloin hides a beautiful hotel inside. Like any other hotel in the area that is affordable, there isn't a ton of parking outside the hotel when you check in. You use the small area designated for drop off and turn on your hazard lights. Step inside and you would never guess the beauty inside. The large seating areas with well-upholstered material, large fire places and grand staircase really set the stage. There is even an Italian restaurant that serves the morning breakfast. The rooms are small. You have to expect that when staying downtown. The decorating is better than most. Everything makes the most of the small space. One word of caution, the beds are hard as a rock! One of the worst night's sleep i have ever had. Your back will never forgive you. Last, let's talk about the parking. You have to go to Shannon Street (really it is only an alley) to park at a garage. It is a bit pricey and pricing can be inconsistent among the workers. I was quoted $40/night by one person and $45/night by another for Saturday and Sunday night parking. It can be a bit of a pain if you get there during peak times to drop off/pick up. Make sure you allot enough time. All in all, not a bad experience. Affordable and I didn't feel unsafe here despite the location.

Yelp
My sister and I decided to stay here for a staycation and it was perfect. The hotel is beautiful. So many things that bring it to life like the staircase, the old fireplace the high back sofas and the lounge area that looks like a library. The staff was also very nice and helpful. We booked the corner suite for the soaking tub and we were not disappointed. The main bed and pull out were comfy and the area was quiet. We live in Oakland so the homelessness that is around wasn't a bother because it wasn't too bad and what city isn't faced with that crisis right now. We wanted to try the restaurant inside the hotel but missed breakfast. My suggestion make sure to get up early. The French toast sounded good. We weren't far from the pier or the ferry terminal so there is plenty to do in the area and lots of restaurants just get out and explore. Also around the corner is cityscape skybar so beautiful! My only con was DO NOT book through third party websites. I paid in full but at check out still had a small fee that wasn't collected at no fault of the hotel but I should have read the itsy fine print lol. Other than that it's a great place to go for a night by yourself or staycation with a friend or spouse. Definitely will be going back. This hotel is a true GEM and looking forward to it.

Yelp
Because the front desk agent who checked us in could not explain what we got with the additional $40/night fee we learned we would be paying upon check in, allow me to explain... Think of the Marker's slightly predatory "urban fee" like a resort fee in Vegas. Except in Vegas you get access to the pool, cabanas, on-site bar, etc. At the Marker, you get access to their fitness center (which admittedly is nice), the chance to sit in their obscenely large lobby, and can go downstairs to the lobby restaurant ONLY FROM 7-10am to be stared at by the waitstaff as you wander in in your pajamas just seeking morning coffee that really should just be in your room. So, cheers to my $240 one cup of coffee a day and the one workout I did in the fitness center. Worth it? Not at ALL. Paid it? Absolutely! On top of this incredibly annoying "in the fine print" fee, The staff at the Marker are not at all welcoming. Each time we walked in the door, there would be four people lined up just silently staring at us. We gathered later it seemed to be two front desk agents, a manager, and a security guard. But none of them spoke. Ever. Just kind of stared at us as we walked in. If we greeted them, we occasionally got a small smile. Just was odd. That being said, we didn't have any other issues. The room is small, but clean. The headboard, like mentioned in other reviews, was a bit shredded. Our "view" overlooked the roof, but that didn't phase us. We kept the blinds open for light until a day before checkout when a worker was on the roof and did a double take into our room... Eek, some warning would've been nice there, I suppose! We felt the location was central enough, and didn't feel in danger. One block north into the Tenderloin and things started feeling questionable, but staying on our block to catch the Muni (stop conveniently across the street) or walking into Union Square was fine. And, again, none of the location issues are even The Marker's fault. We did use the fitness center once (gotta make use of that urban fee!!!) and it was really nice. It was empty, clean, spacious, and had all the equipment we needed. Overall, The Marker was fine. The urban fee is incredibly lame, and the 3 hours only of coffee is also incredibly lame. I probably wouldn't stay here again. We thought we got a decent deal on our room, but if you include our darling "urban fee", we probably just could've stayed somewhere nicer for the same cost.

Yelp
Hesitant when booking anything in San Francisco but was pleasantly surprised with this choice. The front desk clerk was very helpful on the telephone prior to booking. We were guided to a convenient parking garage next door ($35.00). The outside of building was lite up blue when we arrived giving it a modern feel. The lobby was beautiful with two big sitting areas and an amazing fireplace. The staff was friendly and opened the secured door for us every time we went in and out. The room was on the smaller side but clean. The bed was just okay comfort wise but the pillows (4 per bed) were good quality. We ate at the restaurant downstairs. Food was decent and not too $$. The hotel sits right on the edge of good and bad like pretty much any hotel near Union Square. I would definitely recommend this hotel to anyone trying to decide where to stay near Union Square.

Yelp
They turned one of San Francisco's most beautiful restaurants into a colorless conference room. I can't imagine the mindset of someone who would willingly lower a ceiling by 10 feet, but I also couldn't have previous imagine how interior design could be so dull and soulless yet also simultaneously tacky. The whole thing is painted shades of gray now, with all the creativity of a house flipper. It's hard to believe that the before and after in this photo of the same room, but they are; the bottom photo is just taken facing 90° to the left. I can't believe I care enough about this to write a review, but some crimes of interior design are just that egregious. I just can't believe someone chose to remove a beautiful space from the city in favor of... this.

Yelp
Update: we decided to give the Marker another shot because we like the location and the rooms are nice. This time I reserved a full suite. Very nice. Once again, a nice soaking tub and plenty of room to spread out. Even though we were facing Geary, it didn't get too noisy at night. As a VIP Expedia Gold member, this time our resort fee was waived. They also offered late check out (which I didn't need, but it's the thought that counts). This time they gave us 2 water bottles instead of one. They should extend their coffee service to later. I'm a 2-3 cup a day kinda gal. Our room had a Keurig but only tea pods. The neighborhood is... how can I put it? Interesting. Watch your belongings. Don't engage. Use some street smarts. My Citizen app was blowing up like the 4th of July the entire time. I actually witnessed a couple of scuffles in my few days there. Fire engines non-stop. I wouldn't walk around by yourself after dark. Just a little friendly yelp advice. Staff friendliness is still hit or miss but I don't really need anybody kissing my rear end anyway. We travel for business to SF twice a month. I'd probably stay at the Marker again.

Yelp
Our weekend in the city and this was our choice of hotel. Mixed review for me. So I'll give the details and forget the story on this one. Easy enough to find, stopped on the white curb to unload and checked in. We parked in the Mason St. garage. About two blocks away $76 for two nights. The hotel is on the corner pretty good length of white curb to unload. Its an old building but has been fixed up very nicely. Restaurant on premises. Seventh floor, a small room, it was okay. AC worked well, bathroom newish and clean. Good towels too. Through the stay the walls we're talking all the time & most of the night. Old pipes constantly rattling and banging with air locks in the system. Guess what? the friggin water out of the shower was a problem. The first morning no hot water, barely warm, we called maintenance he was up in ten minutes. He fiddled with the control and dialed in more hot water, okay that worked. Second morning shower water scalding hot, no way to turn it colder. Called maintenance...fixed All of the staff were helpful and friendly but that didn't fix the inconvenience, readjusting our timing, waa waa waa. Since we were out okaying most of the day it was all okay with the hotel, a bit pricy for the overall experience. There are plenty of hotels in this city, we won't be staying at this one next time. Yelp
Amazing staff , extremely inviting. The location and atmosphere was very comfortable. Yes; the amenities & lack of valet was a little disappointing, but still very pleased with everything else. Thank you for an excellent experience.

the room was great. Clean and good linens, but there was NO hot water for a shower...kind of a basic. We survived knowing that much of the world has no water or even housing. The morning breakfast, included was excellent and the kitchen and bar staff was extraordinary. It is interesting to see that it is possible to have a well-motivated staff when the corporate structure is so lacking.

Yelp
A couple of the front desk workers were extremely rude and terse when I arrived to check in and also when my keycards were not working properly. I had a maintenance issue immediately upon arriving as the shower was not set up properly and was only pushing scalding hot water, no cold or warm. They had someone fix it within minutes which was impressive but I've never encountered a maintenance issue at any hotel I've stayed at, least of all a 4 star hotel. No coffee in the rooms and you can only access it in the restaurant during designated times which don't start until 7AM. The weirdest of all, someone was burning incense in their room. Very obvious from the do not disturb sign and the...noises, what was going on in there and that's chill, good for them. But the scent of incense throughout the hall was incredibly strong and as someone who has allergies, not the greatest. All seemed a little off beat for a 4 star hotel. On a positive note, the rooms are gorgeous and the coffee is some of the best I've had at any hotel. There's a Peloton in the fitness center which was interesting to try for the first time lol.

Yelp
This hotel was awesome. Convenient location and clean. Has a fitness center, thank goodness! Daniel was super helpful. Helped us get checked in nice and easy. His great spirit was very contagious after such a long flight it was very refreshing to come to him at the front desk. I'd come back in a heart beat.

Yelp
This was a great hotel located in a great spot near Union Square. What I loved most about this place was the friendliness of the staff. They went above and beyond out expectations. We even were able to get our room well before our check-in time when we arrived in early from out-of-town. The rooms were clean, and refreshed daily with clean linen and organized, and always smelled great. The exercise room is well equipped if you choose to make that part of your stay. What we also enjoyed was being able to relax, at one of the two large fireplaces after long, and sometimes cold days of exploring the city. Thanks once again to the staff for making our stay that much more memorable!

Yelp
I was really excited to book a room for my spouse (who is a stay at home parent to our toddler triplets) to have their first solo night as a Christmas gift. They don't drink, so I called to see if they could adjust the complementary bottle of champagne to a food voucher. Everyone I spoke to was very friendly and polite- and they promised I would receive a call to confirm- I never did which happens- no big deal. I call again today (morning of reservation) to try and get it sorted out and give them the explanation using the language "spouse" and "partner" an mentioning "OUR kids" to explain who would be using the booking (we are a same sex couple and I had added both of our names to the reservation in my original call to make the reservation). The person I talked to repeatedly said "your friend" to refer to my spouse. I continue to respond politely with "my spouse" and "my partner" only for her to continue to say "your friend" as we worked on getting them added to the reservation. I know it seems small- but it really left a bad taste in my mouth. We really splurged for this visit, and assumed that staying in a 4 star hotel IN SAN FRANSISCO of all places I wouldn't have to deal with that kind of micro-aggression. I hope that they can use this to make sure all staff are ready to welcome a queer couple in ways that make them feel as seen, welcome, and safe as hetero folks. My spouse is not my "friend" "sister" or "roommate" they are my GAY LOVERRR and romantic life partner I do hope the person meant no harm- though these things really have you over thinking all the other normal little oversights like the no call back and the multiple times I had to try and add their name on the reservation. I'm really over here worrying that my spouse will be experiencing more of the same when they arrive as a QTPOC guest today. Fingers crossed they won't and that they get the rest and peace they deserve (and that we splurged to pay for) ‍

Yelp
Leave your valuables at home September 2023 My cousins and I stayed for a birthday celebration from , September 3 to the 4th and upon leaving the room we left a few valuable items and Anna the supervisor for Lost and Found never returned. The restaurant is closed and they don't tell you that when you book your reservation. Not to mention our room looked nothing like their advertised options. Lost and found management Anna Stroviski never responded to our inquiries. It's a travesty that they cannot respond to Lost and Found if they have a lost and found department so if you have anything, that's a value that means anything at all to you don't take it to the marker, you'll become a mark after several attempts I'm over it they can keep the items. I wouldn't recommend this place to my worst enemy. customer beware! Did I mention it's only a few blocks from the tenderloin not very safe, so don't go out at night.

Yelp
Super cute hotel! 5 stars for the ambiance. Perhaps the only one in SF that has rooms with soaking tubs too. But let me share my experience... I had been looking for a little getaway and decided to book their nice room for a couple of nights -- working in the room during the day, soaking tub in the evenings. So around noon, as I'm in the middle of work, someone knocks on my door. As I get up to go towards the door, my door OPENS UP before i get there and there is a male employee (housekeeping) WALKING INTO MY ROOM! Like WTF!!! Note that their doors DO NOT have locks from the inside, so you only count on their card key locks. I was in shock!!!! Like for a second I couldn't even find words to say. And he goes, " I'm checking if you need cups". Are you for real?!? You just broke into my room ( I had the " Privacy" sign hanging on my door the entire time!) while I have a privacy request, walked inside to ask if i needed cups!? This is a violation of privacy and super disrespectful to guests. I could have been sleeping and a man walked into my room? (Actually, after my incident I found another review that this happened to another lady as a handyman walked into her room as she was asleep, to fix some locks). WTF I went to the front desk to inform about this. They threw a little "sorry about that" at me, but for the most part the front desk employees had a "don't bother me" attitude. Cut the long story short, the rooms don't have locks and their employees just walk into your room. If your privacy and security concerns you, check another hotel.

Yelp
In town for business. Booked this hotel because it's one block from my meetings. The hotel overbooked rooms and moved me to a hotel miles away (and a far less nice hotel in a terrible area). They didn't offer me any other options. I booked this months ago. If you book here, he prepared to randomly be sent to a hotel miles away with no option to get a refund and book somewhere else. I'm now 2 miles away from my meetings in a loud, old room having to Uber to and from my meetings. Don't book here.

Yelp
The staff and location were great. Restaurant Tratto is on site serving breakfast, lunch, and dinner. The hotel is a no frills hotel, no valet or on site parking. Garages within walking distance but cost between $35 and $50 a night; some 24 hours and others close at midnight. Reliable valet at these locations. Great shopping available at Macys and other designer retailers with restaurants. If you walk left out of the hotel, lots of homeless in the area; not a surprise for CA.

Yelp
This is a fabulous place! We found it through a Travelzoo deal. Staff was very friendly and greeted us w a bottle of wine and gift bag. We stayed in an Urban Suite which was huge, clean and well appointed with a fridge, Keurig, ice bucket and wine glasses and comfy bed. The hotel is beautiful and pristine. We had a drink @Tratto which is right on site; also very nice. We will return!

Yelp
Requested early check-in (at a cost) but room was still not ready at 3pm check-in time. Checked in to " "The Perfect Morning" package that includes breakfast and was told they don't have the right voucher so given coupons for $20 off at their restaurant in the morning. Told to wait until 4pm for room. Was asked if they could do anything to make our wait more pleasurable. A said a drink would be nice. Was told bar doesn't open until 4:30pm, but they would give a voucher for drinks. Couldn't find voucher. Told to come back. Several hours, checked with the front desk and told manager said the since I already received a voucher for breakfast (which I paid for) they would not provide a voucher for the room not being ready. Nice room tho. Stingy management at a $600/night room.

Yelp
I stayed here for a conference and really enjoyed the unique decor, the semi European vibe and the solid service. The library, aka reading room, was a nice place to do work and make calls. Coffee and tea selections were a nice touch too. The conference took place in the two private party areas on the first floor, beyond the receiving area and check-in desk. One room was suitable for presentations and would easily accommodate a wedding of around 150 guests. The other room was used for buffet lunch with standing room only and happy hour networking.

Yelp
So last weekend i reserved a rooms at The Marker. I'm a Gold member on Hotels.com I was super disappointed in my room & the overall hotel For being rated 8.4 stars on hotels.com it definitely isn't.. I can name like 5 other hotels around the Marker which are better. The hotel stuff let me look at other rooms but I decided I didn't want to stay for the 2 nights I ended up switching hotels. I would rate this Hotel 3 stars definitely needs to get upgraded & needs renovation ASAP! The room was also dirty with cookie crumbs on the sofa & the bed was horrible hard as a Rock. If the Manager see's this I felt like I wasted 1 hour of my life looking & booking this 3 star hotel room It needs major improvement. Thanks

Yelp
Seems The Marker is hit or miss with some guests. I guess they hit the mark for me! I was skeptical about this place when my friend booked it because it was one of the cheaper hotels in the city. But I was pleasantly impressed with the service, decor, room and location. Sure, it's in the tenderloin, but there are great restaurants and bars within walking distance it's pretty centrally located in the city. Once I entered, I was struck by the beautiful lounge just beyond the lobby with fireplace, high ceiling and plush chairs. They also had bikes in the lobby you can borrow for the day. You just have to request them the day before or early in the morning. We checked in a little early, so our rooms weren't quite ready. Fortunately, they had another lounge area where a lady greeted us with complimentary wine and a guitarist was serenading the crowd. Yes, please! Our rooms were ready before we finished our glasses. The rooms were cozy, clean, with all the basic necessities. The beds were really comfortable; I slept like a baby! Our room didn't have much of a view though unless you like looking at the rooftops of other buildings. The small rooms, heavy doors and antique-like furniture serve as reminders of this historic building. The biggest downside I have to mention is the parking situation. They charge $58 a night. We found a parking lot across the street for $35 and they provided a discount for staying at The Marker. I would definitely stay here again if I needed a hotel in the loin!

Yelp
I really enjoyed my stay here! It had everything I needed, so I recommend this hotel if you're staying in Downtown SF! We visited San Francisco for the weekend because I won tickets to the Curran Theater (this hotel is a 30 second walk from the theater, by the way!) and booked this hotel last minute. Great rates and very easy to book online. When we got there (around 11pm), the front desk person was cheerful, detailed, and prompt. She also handed me a Welcome Gift (it included a really nice stainless steel water bottle, a welcome note, and ear plugs). She described that there was a gym and atm on the Lower Level, coffee and tea service in the morning in the lobby, and a wine hour for guests from 5-6. I used the gym both days I stayed there, and it had everything I needed to workout (elliptical, treadmills, yoga mats, weights, a few other machines, and a really water filter machine). It's a gorgeous boutique hotel with wonderful, friendly staff. It's near many great food places and super close walking distance from the Curran Theater. Around the corner is a fun, secret speakeasy whiskey bar as well. I highly recommend staying here if you want to stay in the downtown area of SF.

Yelp
I searched Yelp/Google and found really really high reviews for The Marker. The pictures made the property look amazing and the style I was going for on our trip to SF. This was a birthday weekend and was disappointed and a let down for me for sure. Paying 255/night in San Francisco right now during this time, I think I just expected so much more. With that, I completely understand with the Pandemic, the challenges so many of the business felt, and I tried to not let that effect my review or experience. Not that I am sure, but it seemed The Marker had only just opened again, and I felt that I payed full price to pay be a guinea pig for their reopening. A reopening they just weren't ready for. Booking the hotel I noticed a 29.99 "Amenity Fee" for the property. I had no issue with this at all and have stayed in hotels/resorts all over the world and understand this charge. My issue came when I asked the front desk checking in what amenities were. The Gym was not open, the restaurants were closed, coffee machine had no coffee in it, and wireless internet was down. Obviously I was left wanting after paying for literally nothing. As we walked into our King Suite, the first thing I noticed was the wallpaper clearly coming off the walls in several places, most of which I attempted to fix myself pushing into place, before my wife came upstairs. Both tops and bottoms of wallpaper were coming off over the entirety of the room. The room was clean, probably as no one has stayed in it for months, but not what I expected staying in a nicer hotel. The couch cushions were pretty gross with stains on them. One of my biggest issues was the fact that it would take upwards of an hour for the water in the bath/shower to heat up to an actual luke warm water temperature. The bathroom/massive bathtub was absolutely beaaaaautiful and easily fit two adults with no issue, but having it take so long to heat up so it wasn't freezing was frustrating to say the least. We called the front desk and explained the water issue, but it was a hotel wide issue so moving rooms wasn't gonna help. : / The reason I gave this two stars, was the lobby and hotel itself are really beautiful. The decor and ambiance is nice and the location itself has some nice places around it.

Yelp
I had a bad experience with Shenna at the front desk. I felt like she was dishonest and difficult to deal with. Such a nice hotel hiring what I saw as a ghetto employee. I wont be going back!

Yelp
I think I only spent $89 on this room so I can't complain too much. If you need a cheap room to crash in, go ahead and stay here. It's certainly not a nice hotel and the rates reflect that. While there weren't any particularly dirty aspects of the room, it just felt overall a bit grimy - maybe it was the rather old carpet, or could be the shower curtain situation. But at the end of the day, I arrived late after a flight and left early in the morning and it was entirely serviceable and quite cheap for that. The bed was comfortable and the stay was quiet. It reminds me of staying in a travel hotel like a Four Points or a more trendy version of a Best Western, or something at a similar quality level to those which you'd find on the highway between two major cities for people on roadtrips to crash in. The lobby restaurant looks nice and is a good vibe. Free coffee in the mornings in the lobby restaurant. Room generally small. Toiletries limited (for example: no shampoo, rather just a Shower Gel which is shampoo and body wash). I hate that SF only really has hotels clustered around Union Square. That means they're all fairly close to the tenderloin (homeless/drug problems). It's not the fault of this hotel in particular, but rather of the SF zoning laws and policing policies that make this area not entirely safe or comfortable, but there aren't really better options.

Yelp
I stayed for four nights (checked in 4/12/2019; checked out 4/16/2019) - It was one of the worst experience for me. I checked in, locked my door and went to sleep. I woke up to some sound at my door and came to see that there was a man (staff engineer) installing a door stopper inside my room! He was working inside my room while I was sleeping. I asked him what he was doing and he apologized and left immediately. It was a terrifying moment for me. I immediately called the concierge to report and they said I should have put a "no disturbed" sign on my door. Why would anyone enter my room if I just checked in? The sign would be put up if in the morning I don't want room service. As a female, this experience was a violation of my personal space and I felt unsafe. I paid a lot for my stay too. It was beyond disappointing. They don't have a door chain or door guard inside the room. I locked the door, but then the staff could still enter with their key.

Yelp
Clean well decorated lobby. My room was clean, small, in good condition. I am a coffee drinker - it was a bummer to not have coffee in the room. Front desk was ok but with limited knowledge about recommendations for the area. Hotel should provide more information about this touristy area. No parking onsite. You need to pay private parking. Convenient location very close to union square.

Yelp
The Marker is such a value! I had reserved a Deluxe Queen room, but upon arrival I was informed that I was a VIP guest. I was handed a lovely card on shimmery paper with my name handwritten on the front, received a nice thank you gift, but best of all: I was upgraded to a SUITE! For. Free. The Marker offers beautifully appointed rooms featuring: * eclectic decor * comfy beds * little special touches everywhere. For example, they wrap the spare toilet tissue in expensive-looking shimmery paper. They provide complimentary toiletries from Beekind. The decorative pillows on the bed were covered with washable natural-fiber covers, inviting me to touch. You can tell I'm enamored by the Marker if you've read this far. Now I feel I must share some teeny flaws. * If I was a CSI, the light fixtures had enough gunk and DNA on them to convict. * There was a lightbulb out in a otherwise gorgeous lamp. * Noise from my neighbor(s) activity's, as well as street noise are available 24/7. * The coffee from the little coffee maker in the room tastes distinctly of plastic. Stir sticks are not provided. No huge problems. Just a HUGE value!

Yelp
First time in San Francisco and I must admit I didn't (and still don't) know much about the place. I came with the hubby and another couple and they booked is rooms in this Hotel. For starters it is about two blocks from the Square, which is really convenient. Our room was small but it was nicely decorated and pretty quirky. I really liked it. Front desk clerks are extremely nice and helpful. We asked on our first day where could we get some breakfast and they recommended a place couple of blocks away. It was truly amazing, we ended up going there every day we stayed in San Francisco it was that good. Housekeeping was also great. Our room was nicely cleaned every day. I know this sounds like an oxymoron, but I have been in hotels where the housekeeping hasn't been great, and they have not been cheap hotels. At 5 o'clock they have free wine for about an hour, local, and pretty good. I sure took advantage of that. Overall a really good mid range hotel. I would definitely stay here again if I ever find myself back in San Francisco.

Yelp
Stayed here during my club travel for a few nights. Modern stylish rooms. But thin walls on noise. Very polite staff and clean room. The Devore is nice to look at. No breakfast but coffee and tea are available. Enjoyed the Social Room for wine and live music. I would recommend all in all.

Yelp
An update to my past review. Still 5 stars! Recently stayed at The Marker again and it's still lovely. The rooms nice and spacious, and most importantly clean. Location is great (near Union Square). The front desk staff is fabulous. Customer service is amazing. And they provide a gift bag upon check-in that includes face masks, ear plugs, and a refillable water bottle that can be used at the water filling station in the lobby. Can't wait to stay there again!

Yelp
Every worker has no clue what's going on and can barely help you. If you need help good luck it'll take about 15-30 minutes. Also, you won't see that $225 deposit back even though you have ZERO damages. Our iron did not even work, they don't have fridges, they don't have microwaves for guests to use. They don't have anything except a gym wow. You will get charged a DOUBLE amenities fee??! we originally payed $102 for amenities ($29.99/room/night + tax), makes sense right, but all of a sudden it's +$140. make that make sense. How does $29.99 for 3 nights plus tax add up to $140?!

Yelp
Beautiful hotel, love the cozy holiday feeling in the Library and the fireplace at the entrance. Gabriel at the front desk needs a raise...what a gem he is! So accommodating and willing to go above and beyond to make sure my crew and I had everything we needed.

Yelp
Don't book here unless you are willing to run the risk of check-in hassles due to their outdated card readers being unable to process chip cards, and a front desk staff who are not only unhelpful in resolving the situation, but are willing to blame the customer for the problem. I booked a suite here through Expedia, and when I attempted to check in, their card readers all errored with "Index Key Not Found." The desk staff told me that this must be a problem with my bank, even though I had been using both cards throughout the day while traveling, and received no fraud alerts. When I checked my accounts the next day, there was a $1.00 charge from the Marker, so my bank was clearly able to process the hold charge against my debit card. I then learned that they have dealt with this issue before, even on the previous day, and they had taken no action to try and resolve the issue. I was told that because they couldn't read my card, they couldn't check me in, and my only option was to contact Expedia to have my reservation cancelled so I wouldn't be charged a cancellation fee, and that I would have to find another hotel room in San Francisco. Throughout all this, the staff acted as if this was my problem because I had booked through Expedia, which they clearly dislike. I was offered no assistance with trying to deal with this (I had to call and hang on hold with Expedia for twenty minutes), offered no alternative solutions, and wasn't even offered a bottle of water or anything while I had to deal with Expedia. I had booked a suite for four days for a total cost of $1300. It's a mystery to me why the staff would simply let this money go out the window, but so they did. After dealing with the cancellation, I booked another room through Expedia across the street at the Adagio for considerably less. I was looking forward to staying at The Marker because I enjoy staying at classic hotels, but given this terrible customer service, I would warn anyone considering a stay here to be ready to deal with what is some of the worst customer service I have experienced in almost 30 years of international travel.

Yelp
Cute old-style hotel within walking distance of Union Square and shopping. If you have an interior facing room, it's super quiet and safe. The was bed was very comfy and room decor was fun. They give you a cute reusable metal water bottle at check in. Lobby area / common space is big and a great place to work, if needed. Lastly, I meant to use the gym but didn't have time, but it's actually pretty decent for a boutique hotel gym. PRO TIP: You can get a great bowl of pho within walking distance at a place called Pho 2000

Yelp
I had such an amazing stay at The Marker for my birthday last year! Staff was great, helped with directions and finding things in the city. Great location, walking distance to great food and shopping. Rooms are decorated beautifully, super cute. They found out it was my birthday and sent a bottle to my room! Of course the wine happy hour is great, who doesn't love wine?? I'm writing this review late, but only because I'm searching to rebook. If you want to see more on my photos on on social @ brokeassgirltravel

Yelp
worst hotel in my life never had worse experience then there. Toilet smells shitty all the time, duvet had stains and bath towels had red stains, carpets on the room are dirty, i had to stay there for 3 nights because my flight got canceled on Christmas say not many last minute choice. The front desk even though was very nice and friendly but hygiene is smth everyone should worry before thinking to stay there

Yelp
What a treat to stay here! This hotel has such a warm feeling when you walk thru the front doors, from the artistic decorations to the big smiles that greet you. Theres a small amenities fee you have to pay but it is well worth it!! It covers a wine social, fresh coffee in the morning, and live music while you drink. I will definitely be back! The only negative is the neighborhood that its located in. Lots of homeless and pee smells everywhere. I walked to starbucks down the street and saw some crazy guy getting arrested in front. Definitely not the best way to start your morning.

Yelp
I booked via the Hotel.com app. and stayed at The Marker Wednesday, 12/20/17 through Friday, 12/22/17. My entire experience was very pleasant, starting with Eddie at the front desk. He was extremely friendly, informative, and efficient! I would definitely stay here again. The 411: * Check-in is 3:00PM * Check-out is 12:00PM * $200.00 pending charge until AFTER checkout * No room service offered * 15-20+ minute walk to Union Square * Walgreens is located down the street and open until 12:00AM * Yes, there are a decent amount of homeless people in the area Parking: Valet parking is available at the hotel for compact vehicles at $58.00 a day ($66.12 with tax). With that being said, I utilized the 24-hour accessible Ace Parking Garage down the street (415 Taylor St.) for $31.20 a day ($39.00 with tax). If you pay for the parking in advance, you're allowed valet in and out privileges at any time. I felt comfortable leaving my car for a few days and had zero issues. Amenities: There's a $25.00 per day hotel amenity fee. The amenities include: FREE WiFi, coffee and tea from 5:00AM to 10:00AM, wine tasting from 5:00PM to 6:00PM, local and long distance calls, 24 hour gym, bike rental, etc. Not too shabby! The room: I stayed in room 403. I was offered a suite upgrade for $50 more per night, but declined. No regrets! The room itself was located at the end of the hallway, clean, cute, and provided enough space for two adults. I thought it odd that the bathroom door didn't have a lock. If you're one who enjoys souvenir hotel shampoos and conditioners, refrain! Per notice in the bathroom, the hotel will charge $20.00 per bottle for missing items! The scent was nice, but not THAT nice. I was slightly bummed that their music dock was outdated (no Bluetooth) and incompatible with newer iPhones and Androids.

Yelp
Timeframe: 3 Nights Location: Great location, downtown near all the stores and mall, easy walk to the Bart and buses, plus a Walgreens right across the street to get water and reasonably priced snacks. Room: Normal size room for queen bed Linens: Clean linens replaced daily Noise: Very quite no noise, couldn't hear people in hallway or next door View: No views at all but even if you were facing the street there is little to look at. Security: You do not need a security card to go up the elevators Bathroom: Normal single sink, bath/shower combo. One thing I did NOT like was the large shampoo and conditioner bottles they offer. I know its more environmentally friendly to refill these vs giving everyone small containers. But you never know who put what in those things prior to your stay... I had to buy my own across the street. Snack/Drink bar: Like any hotel the snack/drink bar is ridiculous in price. Please go to the Walgreens right across the street for your water and other needs. They do offer water next to the front desk for free if you don't want to pay for anything. Extras: They do offer free tea/coffee and all the wine you can handle every day for your stay in the lobby. But you are paying a hotel fee to stay here so make sure you go get something. Overview: I'd definitely come back to this hotel, the location was great, staff was nice, easy access to everything, and fairly priced.

Yelp
My husband and I have stayed here a few times now and it's always a wonderful treat! The spa rooms are well worth the soaking tubs and the wine and coffee/tea hours are a nice chance to mingle and be treated to complimentary drinks. What truly sets this place apart is the consistently impeccable guest services- Brittani at the front desk is AMAZING. She's always so helpful and an absolute delight to speak with.
