"Chef William Dissen’s the Market Place celebrated its 45th anniversary in 2024 with a semifinalist nod for the James Beard Outstanding Restaurant award. Opened in 1979, and in its current Wall Street location under Dissen’s ownership since 2009, the Market Place is Asheville’s landmark farm-to-table restaurant and a cornerstone of the city’s food scene history. Sampling the house pickles, fresh vegetable small plates, and charcuterie is a must. The seasonally rotating menu also showcases fresh local meats and trout as well as Carolina seafood options. The Benton’s bacon Old Fashioned with maple syrup is a classic complement to the meal." - Gina Smith

We’re so glad that we celebrated our sixth wedding anniversary with The Market Place. We always want to try a farm to table restaurant. Not only was the staff very friendly, but the atmosphere created a very romantic mood. The food was simply amazing. We highly recommend experiencing this wonderful establishment, and make sure to leave room for dessert.

The Market Place is one of Asheville's oldest restaurants. It has survived due to their incredible menu, featuring many local fresh ingredients, their consistency in high quality dishes, an excellent drink menu and friendly staff. I highly recommend The Market Place for a friend's night out, corporate dinner or date night

Had the most fabulous dinner tonight at The Market Place. The food was fresh, with unique pairings, a new menu, and clean flavors. The staff and the service was bar none. And love that all the ingredients come from Tennessee, NC or SC- truly cannot recommend this place enough.

Amazing experience on the patio (our dog was allowed). Food and cocktail were great and allowed us to experience local products and flavors. The stars of the show were the heirloom tomatoes and the grilled peaches with ham. Definitely recommend.

One of the very best meals of my life. Every bite was filled with so much flavor! A few of our absolute favorites: fermented kohlrabi, cowboy candy,London Fog cashews, wood grilled steak, the Raspberry Beret non-alcoholic cocktail, and Thai tea sorbet. My husband cannot have gluten and the staff was very understanding and accommodating. We had a great experience here and would love to come back next time we are in town!

Stopped in on Sunday night, seated promptly. We started off with a couple of appetizers. They were delectable. I ordered the trout pate for my entree, holy moly it was amazing. Hubby ordered the braised lamb and hand cut pasta, my son ordered the trout with seasonal vegetables. To finish off, we had all the desserts they offered except the cheese plate. This place is a sleeper. The chef knows his craft, well balanced flavors and textures to make your mouth smile with excitement. Food is fresh and locally sourced. You will not be disappointed. Oh, how can I forget the Brussels sprouts. Explosion of flavor in every bite.

Google
More of a 4.5. Food quality was good. Service was good considering our server had too many tables. Clearly it wasn't him, just not more of him. *Cheese plate- delicious but filling. We had to take the rest to go. The pickles are amazing! *Double cheese burger- flavorful but a generous portion. *Tempura zucchini and Squash. Very lightly breaded. It's a very generous portion. *Mac and cheese- I asked for it without ham or peas. Way better without all those fillers. Flavorful and delicious. *pot de crème- it came out to us slow, extremely slow. Our server took it off the bill. It was OK, I didn't really care for the raspberry. Would have been fine with just whip cream topping. Food quality was good and the place was aesthetic. Would definitely return. Plus it's close to our hotel. Location is a plus.

"American style" dishes Grilled trout was well prepared, though trout always lacks much of a fish flavor. Charcuterie plate with cheese was competent, and pickles house made were welcomed, but taste wise nothing unusual. $60/person without alcohol

Yelp
I have yelp for two reasons, the food either has to be above and beyond, or incredibly disappointing. Unfortunately, the pappardelle was bad enough to get me to sign in and write this. Maybe it's just the one dish that is lacking, but wait staff even recommended it so I'm not sure what to think. Two couples in our group ordered it and none of us liked it enough to even finish (which is rare.) I will say other folks in our group said that the porkchop was great, and the heirloom tomato salad was very tasty, but the pappardelle was a real disappointment. The lamb shank was lacking in flavor and under salted (and I'd actually consider myself somewhat salt averse.) The rest of the dish didn't contribute any flavor to the noodles either, so it just felt like somebody forgot to add a sauce. It was like we ordered noodles in water, it was bizarre. I actually ended up taking the noodles out of the dish and put them in the leftovers of the heirloom tomato salad to add flavor, which was a dramatic improvement. Sorry to rag so hard on a specific dish, but at least it seems like my review is the outlier. Wait staff was nice, drinks were good, and like I said, other dishes were good.

Yelp
The Market Place is a solid restaurant for a dinner with family and loved ones. It's dark and romantic but also very home-y at the same time. I made a last minute reservation that afternoon for 2 for dinner. We were seated at the very back of the restaurant, which made me worry that we would be forgotten in the dim restaurant. It did get a little difficult to flag down our busy server toward the end of the meal, but otherwise he was pretty diligent. We started with a couple glasses of wine (between $10-12 a glass) and ordered a few dishes to share. The crispy shrimp were just that - crispy shrimp. The accompaniment of labneh and lightly dressed greens paired well with the shrimp. I was shocked to see they left the heads on - but totally ok with it since that's how I usually order my shrimp at seafood boil restaurants. And while the shrimp were a pretty good size, I was disappointed by how many shrimp were on the "small plate" for $16. However, the PEI mussels were a good size portion for $17. We requested extra bread to soak up that broth - note that it was $2 more. The server split the hand cut pappardelle into two portions since we told him we were splitting it, so that was nice of him to do so - however, I would have preferred receiving that dish on a full size plate and shared it that way! But my boyfriend did prefer not having to wait for me to take pictures of the food so that he could eat first hah! The lamb wasn't too gamey and the hand cut pasta was delicious. Overall, the meal was pretty tasty and for the most part good portions. I probably wouldn't order the crispy shrimp again if it showed up on the seasonally rotating menu again, but 100% ordering the mussels and any of their pasta dishes!

Yelp
The Market is located in a trendy a place of the renovated area of downtown Asheville. Nestled among some cute boutiques and retail shops the Market is a welcome place to take a break from shopping and enjoy some cool cocktails and nice small plates. Very cool decor and atmosphere with a nice outside sidewalk seating area but with some nice privacy and lovely foliage surrounding it. But the service, not so much. A charcuterie board that takes way longer than it should. Only 3 people in the restaurant and they all already had their food. Really? Never refilled the water glass once and waited way too long for the check. But even this sub par service couldn't affect a delightful experience with an array of a fully loaded charcuterie board with some delicious morsels and well blended cocktails.

Yelp
Delicious food at this downtown Asheville spot. This restaurant has been a round a long time and it has withstood the test of time. Took advantage of an unusually warm October evening and dined at one of the outside tables. Because Market Place is located on a narrow side street, passing traffic (car and foot) is minimal so you don't have to deal with roaring engines or passers-by gawking at your meal. Reservations were honored to the second. Service was uneven. Orders placed and served accurately. But timing was off and we weren't halfway thru salads before the entrees were delivered. I tried the fish of the day, a red snapper. It was perfectly prepared, skin-on, pan seared to crunchy perfection. Flesh was tender, juicy and cooked medium well. Very tasty. It was served over scrumptious herb citrus couscous which was scattered with veggies to add some texture and sweetness to the earthy crunch of the couscous. Pear salad was also very good. A big portion of fresh veggies, crumbled bleu cheese and a vinaigrette dressing, topped with thick slices of sweet juicy pear. And lastly steak tartar. A mound of diced raw steak is seasoned with dijon, shallots, vinegar and aioli and served with crunchy ciabbata crisps. A nice complement to the sweetness of the pear salad. Plenty of other choices to try. Will be back.

Yelp
Solid brunch spot! The food was delicious and the restaurant was pretty and spacious. The service was amazing and it was just an overall great dining experience!

Yelp
First things first - get the pork chop if it's on the menu. It was the best I've ever had and it's not really close. Now for the rest of the review... I had an amazing experience. Went here on a Saturday night and could not have been better. This restaurant is nestled in a beautiful area of town. Our server was attentive, with great recommendations and apt descriptions. The drinks were great. We ordered the corn fritters, fries, local cheese board and pickles. Would strongly recommend the cheese board. I ate the pork chop, and as you know from above, was not disappointed in any regard. I am a rare repeat orderer, but I would 100% get this entree again when I am back in town. I fully understand why this place is so highly recommended.

Yelp
Not really sure how this got on the James Beard list. I have been to many James Beard restaurants and have been amazed wanting to go back soon. The Market Place was OK - not great or amazing. The first thing was when we walked up to the hostess she has no smile, and made no greeting whatsoever - we almost thought we were at the wrong place at first - it was a very odd experience. The food was good, not great and not at the level it should have been - We wanted to go wow with every bite and instead went "that's good". The most disappointing thing was the pork schnitzel which was a good deal fat and gristle. Also, in today hip and cool world this place looks to be out of the 80's - really needs a makeover - not a hip vibe to hang in.

Yelp
Great farm to table restaurant in Asheville! Very sleek interior/ambiance and great food. The food did take a while to come out (~1 hr), but the wait staff was very apologetic and gave us a drink on the house. Would definitely make my way back here if I go back to Asheville, everything was very intentional and local.

Yelp
It seems to be common with us, but we found this by accident, just like many I've reviewed. The restaurant is interesting as soon as you walk in. Very clean and welcoming. We were seated and immediately greeted by a very pleasant server. She told us they were out of a couple things. That was disappointing because two in our party were interested in those. We decided to forge ahead with other things. I ordered the pappardelle. A dish they're known for. It was outstanding. Pasta in the dish was perfect in both how it was made, and how it was prepared. My Son had the trout. Also five star worthy. My wife had the smoked trout pate as a meal. Probably too small for me, but worked for her. It was delicious as well. As you can see, we had a diverse variety, all of which were amazing. When you're in Asheville, this place is worth visiting.

Lindsey S.

Yelp
This place is was highly recommended, but I'd say the food was good-ish and the service was so-so. Once I had my food, I was left alone until I requested my check. I started with the Market Salad which was absolutely delicious; very fresh and tasty. Then I had the Pappardelle with Braised Lamb Shank - this was okay. They could be more generous with the lamb morsels and I was a bit surprised at how wet the dish was. I was told they add some of the au jus from the lamb, but it made the pappardelle a bit soggy for my liking. Lastly, I had the Chocolate and Coffee Pot de Creme - this was delicious. However, the sea salt which really adds to the dish was a little too generous and almost overpowering. The atmosphere was naught. It was surprisingly slow for the dinner hour but not being local to Asheville, perhaps that's typical.

Yelp
Sat at the bar last night. Great food, cocktails, and beer with top notch service. The half chicken was tasty and done to perfection. So huge, we split it. The oysters were great. The sourdough bread was OK but not tasty enough fit us. The homemade butter was good. Awesome good.

Brian V.

Yelp
Great meal in a nice restaurant. I sat at the bar where I was well taken care of by the bartender. They had a cooking show on at the bar so I asked Tagore them to put on the Monday night football game which they obliged. I first ordered an Oktoberfest beer and the Pei mussels which were a generous app of steamed mussels in garlic mustard sauce served with whole grain bread. This was a great start to my meal. I followed the mussels with there catch of the day (Tile fish) which I paired with cheddar jalapeño grits. The meal was served in a ceramic dish and had a generous portion of grits with a smaller piece of tilefish. The fish was very tasty. I just wish there was a bigger portion on the main course. With that said, the ample portion of mussels paired with the smaller main course left me full and satisfied with the meal as a whole. Thanks!

Mark O.

Yelp
The service matched the quality of the food. I thought I'd walk out hungry splitting 3 small plates between my wife and myself. Wrong! Ok, did order a desert to split, but was absolutely delicious! Would recommend this restaurant.

Yelp
Lucky to have found this hidden gem! We made reservations via Yelp! the day of after visiting The Biltmore Estate (which was fantastic!) The hostesses and servers were A+ friendly, helpful, and truly personable. We felt welcome and taken care of. Seriously very impressed with the caliber of the employees we interacted with and also noticed others as they buzzed around making everything perfect for their guests. The weather was nice and the sun was setting for the day, so we were able to enjoy our meal outside and people watch. We don't drink alcohol, but appreciate interesting mocktails which we ordered two of. Don't love the paper straws, but get why restaurants are switching to them. They didn't take away from enjoying our drinks. We ordered mac & cheese for the uncommon ingredients... smoked ham (delicious!), peas, and other goodness making it a unique take on the staple side dish. The strawberry, ricotta, almond salad is perfection with its abundant ingredients for balanced bites of every item. Some places skimp on toppings which make it boring to chomp on just forkfuls of greens. The house made pappardelle pasta with braised lamb, morel mushrooms, roasted red pepper, and arugula in a light and zippy wine sauce was a delight! We didn't ask, but they split it into two dishes like the salad. This attention to detail sets this restaurant and its staff apart from the rest! Because we split the rest of the meal, there was room for dessert. The caramel brownie s'more finished our meal off with just the right amount of sweetness. The presentation was unlike any s'more we've ever experienced... pretty! If we're ever in Asheville again, we'll definitely come back! Thanks to all the staff for making our experience magical!

MaLes L.

Yelp
Such a disappointment - on Mother's Day!! Shame on your service. We waited a good 40 minutes for delivery of our entree. That was after salads. Will not come again.

Stanley M.

Yelp
Convenient restaurant nestled on Wall St. in downtown Asheville, it was not too busy on a Thursday night. Service is top notch. I've eaten at this restaurant one time before. Had the mussels and a cheese board. Unique cheese combination which was far better than most. No big slab of blue cheese. Did I mention that I don't like blue cheese? Pickles, various cheeses, nuts, blueberries and some flavorful wafers/crackers. I imagine LOADED this gluten, because they tasted great! Mussels had the right amount of spice to them. Although they were very small, they tasted quite good. Maybe this seasons catch were small mussels. Everything was quite well done. Now, about the whiskey sour. Yes, the Crown Royal was in there. But, with as extensive a bar as they have, their bartender could do a better job mixing a simple drink. Well, next time I'll pick something off their wine list. It looked quite good.

Brendan L.

Yelp
Phenomenal. The James Beard list was spot on when naming this a semi finalist. The diverse menu brought out every flavor from the sea and land. The steak was perfectly done. The wine list complimented the entire menu. The service was also excellent! Highly recommended.

Ed D.

Yelp
We've enjoyed nice dinners at The Market Place on several occasions an joined friends there last night for their first time. The appetizers (charcuterie board and the stuff pepper special) were very good as were two of the four entrees. The quail and papperdelle entrees tasted and cooked to perfection. However, two of us had the agnotolli (?) dish and found the pasta to be hard and chewy - definitely not the texture we were expecting. The sauce and filling was good.

John S.

Yelp
Hey folks this place is worth the visit. The food is delicious and the service is well trained.

Kimberly C.

Yelp
Ate here for our last dinner in Asheville and it didn't disappoint. There's a lot of different items on the menu to cater to different dietary needs. The restaurant is large, with many tables to accommodate multiple parties. They also have outdoor dining, which is a plus during these times. It was clean with a pleasant ambiance. We were able to park in a metered parking spot, though only had to pay for 30 minutes since parking is free after 6PM. There's plenty of parking lots nearby. I wasn't too hungry, as our dinner was at 5:30 so I went for the zucchini fritters and dulce de leche/chocolate brownie for dessert. I didn't taste too much zucchini, but the fritters were pretty tasty, almost like corn bread, which is a good thing for me! The brownie was a little dry, but the cinnamon vanilla ice cream made up for it. Service was slow at times; our waiter was the only one for our section! But all in all, a good experience. Good spot to end our trip to Asheville.

Bernard C.

Yelp
We had a great meal here - the authentic ingredients really stood out here between the foraged mushrooms, house made butter, and on, everything was delicious and finished off nicely with the nice chocolate dessert.

Kathy K.

Yelp
Our large group of eight sat at a nice round table. We were able to have a nice conversation at dinner. We started out with the bread $10 and pickles 8. I had the Trout $32. The skin was nice and crispy. The dinner was delicious. Everyone seemed to enjoy their meal.

Zhicao F.

Yelp
Moern, casual-vibe restaurant with a small bar located at the restaurant and shopping strip of downtown Ashville. COVID-19 precautions: staff wearing masks, dish delivery guy wearing masks and gloves, limited seating, hand sanitizer available. Service: extremely friendly and attentive. We could not make a reservation since the booking was full, but the greeting waitress seated us with an outdoor table within 15 minutes. Main waintress also very friendly and talkative. Drink: had a Blade and Bow bourbon. Wish they had more selection from the nearby Tennessee. Food: Appetizers---Mussels tasted fresh but the sauce was a bit underwhleming; could use a bit more butter and salt. Tuna, nicely done, kept the fatty portion juicy and moist in the middle. Chicken skewers, a pleasant take on Asian cuisine, grilled perfectly with sweet glaze and came with pickled daikon and carrots that went well with risotto-style rice, definitely makes one looking forward to the entree. Entree--- Pork shoulder, seasoning could be a bit stronger, but overall it was nicely grilled, juicy, thick portion of shoulder pork meat. Pan-seared grouper, a perfection, an example of how fish should be cooked and served. Crispy skin with buttery and flavorful flakes underneath, flavor was nutty and pleasant. Garnish of shrimp salad and rice went well with the fish, providing further maritime zest to the dish. Side order or fried brussel sprouts, crispy and tasty, might want to tone down the sour/vinegar taste a bit though. Overall: Except for the slight dissapointment of mussels, everything was good. Five stars hands down. Recommended for any visitors to Asheville.

Yelp
Stopped on a Sunday evening without reservations. Luckily, we were seated promptly. The menu consisted of locally sourced produce and meats and seafood. We ordered meals to share. The market salad was perfectly made with citrus dressing. Also had the trout pate, the best I've ever had. Whole trout filet with seasonal vegetables, delish. Hand cut pappardelle with Braised lamb, holy moly. This place is sleeper. The chef takes pride in his dishes. Well balanced flavors, textures and execution. Next time I visit Asheville, I will definitely make this my stop for dinner. Desserts were equally amazing. We ordered three out of four. Pumpkin brûlée, chocolate mousse And delicate fall pavlova.

Debbie R.

Yelp
Had dinner here a few nights ago. Had the PEI mussels and Pappardelle. Both were very good. We sat outside & enjoyed the nice evening.

Frank B.

Yelp
Made a reservation in advance. for our anniversary. We were placed in a bar top table just behind the major D's desk. Bartender waited on us. Food did not come out in order, and the main dish was taken back and was cold. We were chastised because we complained about the food. I wrote a detailed letter to the owner and chef and never received a response . We had always loved the food at that restaurant, but the hospitality was very hostile, and we will not return. We later wondered if it's because we were a gay couple. It did not dawn on me until later.

Shauna B.

Yelp
Loved the atmosphere, very cute brunch vibe. Our server was great. The food was okay at best. We had a large party & they brought everything out at once and no one had hot food. It wouldn't have been so bad but we waited over an hour for the food. The pumpkin holes and mimosas were the best thing on the menu.

JC G.

Yelp
Steak with aioli was okay, it was perfectly seasoned. It was served with sautéed veggies (mushroom, sweet potatoes, squash). The grits would have been a better pair. Quail was good but lacks seasoning (they should have brined these little bastards). Service was excellent. We were seated upstairs, it was nice, but the downstairs area looks cozier and roomier.

Me R.

Yelp
Booked on Open Table. We were a little concerned when we walked up to have brunch and no one was there. We sat outside. Our server, Fran, was immediately amazing. He had great recommendations. The biscuits and gravy were the best I've ever had!! My husband enjoyed his Bloody Mary. People saw us there and they began pouring in. There was a line to get in before we left.

Charlene K.

Yelp
I order a Bagel and lox told them I was allergic to cream cheese and they gave me a Bagel with no lox So got hold the waiter : I said there is no lox. The bagle had a very and I say a very little amount of spread of white stuff. I said what is this white stuff He said oh you see we take cream cheese and blend it was lox and make a spread I said one I can't eat cream cheese like told you but 2. There is no lox is this. This is really horrible I could not believe they tried to pass this off for a lox and bagle A white spread with nothing in it

vivian a.

Yelp
Ambiance very good. Service, our waiter exceptional! Food, meh. Overpriced, steak was a piece of tough, DRY overcooked, tasteless chuck. Butternut squash, underwhelming, unevenly cooked veggie. Definitely not somewhere worth returning. I must say the special App, oysters Rockefeller exceptional! Drinks, ridiculously overpriced. You can get a NA club soda with splash of juice for 8.00. Asheville has many restaurants that are exceptional and well worth the high prices. This place unfortunately isn't one of them.

Elizabeth B.

Yelp
We visited this restaurant on a busy weekend night, and yet, they graciously seated us in the bar at a hightop table without a reservation. The ambiance is lovely and the menu is intriguing. Because I eat gluten-free, I asked about this and loved the answer, we can make most anything gluten free. I ordered the pork shoulder. It was amazing! Perfectly seasoned and cooked and served over Mexican street corn. Hubby ordered the skirt steak and said it was cooked to perfection and well seasoned. Treat yourself to a meal here.

Rose E.

Yelp
My husband and I decided to go for a hike in Asheville, so we decided to start off with a good meal here! Initially, it was ridiculous trying to find this place...since it's nowhere to be found once you're at your navigation point. WTF? Well, as it turns out, it's on the backside of the pinpointed area. JEEZ...we wasted about 10 minutes walking back and forth trying to find this restaurant. Thank God, that's where the aggravation dies. Once in the restaurant, I loved it right away. The place was much more modern than I had anticipated. In fact, I thought this would be somewhat like an upgraded version of Dean and Deluca...literally a market, with a restaurant section. Nope, this is a full fledge restaurant...a very nice one, in fact. I already pre-selected what I wanted before coming here...Seared Scallops, which comes with grits. Although I'm tired of Shrimp and Grits, Scallops and Grits sounded a bit more exciting! Not only more exciting, it tasted much better than most Shrimp and Grits. SO Dee-Lish!! I only wish it was a bigger portion. Not sure if it's because we came during the brunch hours, but this item was in a much smaller pan than I had anticipated. Still, I loved it so much, I'm not even docking a star for the portion. My husband ordered their Burger, and seemed pleased with it. We also ordered an Apple Pie dessert to share...and it was not only delicious, but so well presented! Loved the unique carving details on the Apple Pie, and also loved the arty touch with the edible flowers! As for the service, it was just OK. Our waitress was minimally attentive, and rather brusk. For instance, after we finished our entrees, instead of asking us if we wanted dessert or anything else, she just said "Are you all done?" in a rather blunt fashion. I don't think she meant to be rude, but again, it was rather brusk. I'll just chalk it up to her being quirky. I will say, however, that the hostess with the red hair was very courteous, even sympathizing with me as I entered the door, given that I had to call her from the street for help (as in where the hell are you guys located lol?). Despite some misgivings (like no signs to this restaurant and brusk service), I absolutely loved this place. The food was phenomenal, and the ambiance was so cool, yet comfy at the same time. I've been eager to try this place for awhile now, and am so glad I finally did. Absolutely loved it!

Kaolhi L.

Yelp
Stopped by the Market Place while I was in town. The service was awesome. I would give the food a 7/10. The Brussel sprouts could have been roasted a little longer. I made reservations prior to coming here. It was pretty full before and after I left.

Joy D.

Yelp
This is in a great ped-mall type area just around the corner from our hotel and we were thrilled they allow dogs on the patio! They're open a bit later than other restaurants in the area, which was great because we arrived in town later than anticipated due to heavy traffic. The patio has lovely flowers in high flower walls that kept our dog from being distracted by anything in the street. Service was on par, food was spectacular, ambiance was amazing! We started with the truffle and herb fries with dipping sauce, which were delicious! I had the hand cut pappardelle with duck and my fiancé had the tile fish special with quinoa, both of which were out of this world; so unusual, and mine had tons of duck! The drinks were also surprisingly tasty; I had the Rose colored glasses Aperol (not sure that is the correct name for it) but I'm picky about Aperol Spritzs and similar drinks, and this topped them all! Dessert was a brownie with a scoop of coffee ice cream, and it finished off the night perfectly! I wish this place was where we live; if you ever travel here or through here, and if you have a dog, this is a must stop!

Yelp
We hosted our son and daughter-in-laws wedding reception here. The venue is intimate and beautiful and the staff did a great job and separating the back room from the front of house. This is a perfect venue for an intimate wedding reception or rehearsal dinner. The venue it self is beautiful and the food & service is excellent. Not one person was disappointed! From start to finish everything was flawless and really was a great experience!

After seeing the James Beard nomination, we booked a table for 2 on a Saturday night. Overall the food was fine but certainly not exciting or innovative. Menu is pretty limited - we had the lamb papardelle, which we were told is the most popular item on the menu. Pasta was freshly made but was swimming in a an almost soup based broth that was somewhat off-putting and somewhat bland. Also had the beet salad which was good and the mushroom tagliatelle which was average. Service was good if not a little quirky but it is Asheville. Ambiance is below average for a highly rated restaurant - think it could do with a refresh. Overall I would rate as average with better places in the Asheville area.

Yelp
We heard this restaurant was a semi finalist for a James Beard award so we decided to try it. The restaurant itself is very appealing with high ceilings and the tables are spaced out well. Great atmosphere!! The service was good, however, the waitress forgot what I ordered for a cocktail. It was delivered late but very tasty Winter Margarita. Appetizers were delivered. One patrons soup was potato leek soup was not appetizing to look at nor did it taste very good. The Brussel Sprout appetizer was delicious. My beet salad never made it to the table. The waitress apologized and offered to bring it after I received my entree at no charge. The beet salad was nothing special but tasted good Now the entrees. My steak was over cooked. I asked for medium rare. It was delivered medium well. I ate it anyway as I didn't want to make more of a fuss about the hiccups with our order. The person who ordered the pork chop mentioned his chop was also overcooked and dry. The Mac&Cheese was delicious as well as the trout. Lastly, the dessert Sticky Toffee Pudding was tasty but again nothing special. I was disappointed overall as I guess I expected more. The staff was very apologetic about the hiccups maybe it was just an off night. I would be willing to give them a 2nd chance after I try some more great restaurants in Asheville!!

Yelp
The sweet potato Crème brûlée was fantastic, as well as the crab cases and oysters, but the rest of the food was mediocre; you might even say it was far below expectations when you consider the value at $80/head. Everyone's steak was a poor cut, the quiche was bland, and they ran out of one of four entrees in a fixed holiday menu, but kitchen management wasn't the only area that is suffering at The Market Place. Although the young lady who served our table was nice and served us well, and we were welcomed warmly by the young man at the host stand, unfortunately another server who fetched us a bag on the way out the door seemed particularly unhappy to help us, and the man behind the bar was even more rude when being asked for a small condiment ramekin to go as we were leaving. We won't be back, and we were disappointed to say the least after spending more than $500 for lunch.

Yelp
We foraged with No Place Like Home the day before our visit to the Marketplace. We'd dropped off our bounty of chanterelle mushrooms, sourwood leaves and autumn olive berries in the evening before our dinner, and the chef prepared an appetizer for us using our ingredients. What a great and unusual experience! For entrees We ordered the trout ,which was perfectly cooked , and the paparadelle with lamb ragú . Delicious! Our server, Jack, was knowledgeable, helpful and friendly. There were some signs of service errors around us effecting other diners but it didn't effect our meal significantly. We really love the farm to table concept and this experience was really wonderful.

Yelp
This restaurant is fantastic! My boyfriend and I took a foraging tour with No Taste Like Home and dropped off our mushrooms at the restaurant. We made brunch reservations for the following day and the restaurant incorporated the mushrooms into an appetizer for us and OMG it was delicious!!! For our main meals my boyfriend ordered the Cold Smoked Sunburst Trout and I ordered the Steak and Eggs. We shared and both were amazing! The next time we visit Asheville we will definitely be going back to this restaurant.

Yelp
Visiting Asheville for a girls trip, a friend took the initiative to make a reservation for us at The Market Place for dinner and it was a great time! Our group was seated at a round table which was great- it enabled us to be able to talk as a group, rather than sectioning is on ends of a table. We started out with a round of drinks. There were a lot of specialty drinks on the menu, in addition to beer and wine. I ordered a vodka soda with lime, which was mixed well and had plenty of lime. When looking over the menu to choose an entree, everything seemed delectable! There were options even for those of us in the group with dietary restrictions. I went with the risotto which was made with cashew milk- and it was delicious! With so many restaurants, it's hard to make a decision about where to go for dinner - but I absolutely recommend The Market Place if you're in Asheville!

Yelp
After reading all the reviews we were really excited about our brunch reservation while we were in town. We did not have to wait at all to be sat in a comfy booth. We ordered the following: Benton 's Old Fashion ($11) Mac & Cheese ($10) Billy D's Fried Chicken Sandwich ($15) Eggs Benedict ($16) My husband thought his old fashion was okay. He was not blown away and described it as average. We shared the macaroni and cheese appetizer and it was out of this world. I loved the peas and the chunks of ham. It was divine. I will say if we ever go back I will just get this as my entree because the portion was really big for an appetizer and it was the only thing I truly enjoyed from our visit. Definitely get the macaroni and cheese! For the main course, we had the chicken sandwich and the eggs benedict. The chicken sandwich was good, but the chicken was a bit over fried and dry. The breading on the chicken was burnt and kept falling off. The sandwich was also supposed to have slaw on it and ours did not have any. The potatoes on the side were crispy and quite nice and the bun was fluffy and soft. Had the chicken been properly cooked and the slaw been included on the sandwich we would have been much more satisfied. The eggs benedict, on the other hand, was atrocious. There two were extremely dry and tasteless triangles of corn bread. The eggs were fried and were so over done I couldn't even cut the egg whites with my knife. There was a sprinkle of ham on top which was such a ridiculous portion. I kept searching underneath the eggs for more ham but nope - just what was on top. It was also supposed to be crispy ham and was not crisp at all. We even asked the server if this was the normal amount of ham and we were told yes.. after he giggled. The hollandaise sauce was tasteless and slick. Not at all creamy. No citrus. It was awful. The entire thing was honestly awful. I hate to send food back, but we absolutely had to. After the eggs benedict fiasco we decided not to complain about the burnt chicken and missing slaw on the sandwich. While the service was good throughout our visit, admittedly our server was agitated after I sent the eggs benedict back. I will long for the mac and cheese, but that is about it. On an unrelated note, there was also a server walking around (and running food) with a bandana rolled up and tied around his face as a face covering - which was a joke considering the entirety of his mouth was exposed. At that point why bother wearing something around your face? It is like putting on a mask and only covering your nose.

Yelp
The market place is located in right in the center of downtown Asheville, in a very cute area might I add, but who are we kidding everything is cute in that area. I had dinner reservations made but due to scheduling I needed to move it up, it was a last minute modification, but I received rolled eyes upon my arrival. That was a huge bummer from the get go. The food came out cold, which sucked because it could have been amazing if warm. The show stopper was the jalapeño biscuit, I couldn't snap a pic because it was too good and it was gone before I realized. The jalapeño cheddar grits were another fan favorite of mine. I think the Mac n cheese with fried chicken would have been my favorite if it wasn't ice cold. When I brought this to the waiters attention he asked me what I wanted him to do about it and I asked him if he could reheat it. Unfortunately the dish was brought to the back and never returned, just comped off the bill with no discussion. I don't know, I would probably give it another try because I do feel it could be good but it wasn't my favorite spot.

Yelp
Do not go to this restaurant. Last night we ( a party of 4 ) ate there. Immediately the service was bad. It took 15+ minutes for a waiter to see us and get water. (Then there was a complete lack of knowledge and confusion about if they had sparkling or still bottled water but there's too much else to share for me to care about going Into that more) I asked to make sure my dishes were gluten free as I have an allergy, SEVERAL times and they assured me it was no problem. The entree I ordered needed to have a side replaced and he said they would sauté vegetables instead. Entree comes, no extra side. And then a few bites in I almost eat a piece of bread. Like a large crouton just sitting under my (overcooked and under seasoned) fish. So much negligence. Also, one of the members of our party reported after visiting the bathroom that the Chef did not wash his hands after leaving the stall. Ew. Overall the dishes everyone else ate were ok. One of our friends really like the pasta, the salads were fine. But ambiance, service, attention to detail and great food were missing from our experience.

Yelp
Located in the heart of downtown Asheville, The Market Place definitely has a fine dining ambiance. The inside had a sophisticated feel and was very spacious. We chose to sit outside though so we can watch the excitement of downtown Asheville. The brunch menu was delicious and was certainly not your typical eggs and toast kind of brunch place. All the dishes had an upscale twist. - Eggs benton ($12): Perfectly made poached eggs with ham and spinach over grit cakes. Their tomato sauce was the best part! - Seared scallops ($16): AMAZING! Two jumbo scallops with savory ham and vegetables on top of jalapeno grits. Served in a skillet! - Market breakfast ($11): For those who still crave the traditional breakfast of eggs, bacon, biscuit and roasted potatoes. - BLT: This option is huge!! Be ready to be stuffed. The jalapeno cathead biscuit was ginormous and in addition to the BLT, you get a side of roasted potatoes.

Yelp
Ate dinner here while in Asheville. It was surprisingly the only place that has available dinner reservations on a Wednesday evening. The food was great. We really enjoyed all the cheeses and spreads on the cheese plate and it was very well presented. The desserts were also so delicious and beautifully plated. The waiter was cool and casual. I'd come back.

Yelp
We are normally big brunch goers at Market Place but decided to try their dinner this visit. It was packed but it was Father's Day. I had a Grey'd Hound cocktail which was heavy on the grapefruit juice but tasty! We started with the pea fritters which were delightful- light, crispy & had a delicious lemon aioli for dipping. Husband had the trout which came with beets & asparagus and he said it was tasty, and I had the chicken with farro & carrots. My only complaint were the carrots could have been grilled longer as they had too much bite. The chicken was very well seasoned which is hard to do sometimes. We would return and try different entrees next time. The pork shoulder looked really lovely coming out of the kitchen.
